Abstract:Soil is considered the fundamental factor involved in the survival and development of human beings. The risk of heavy metal pollution in soil has been also increasing yearly along with the continuous advancement of industrialization and urbanization in China. In order to study the scientific perspective of heavy metal pollution prediction of site soil based on non-sampling multi-source heterogeneous data as well as exploring the importance and influence rules of different variables in different heavy metal pollution, 104 typical polluted sites in Zhejiang Province have been selected as the research objects. The site soil heavy metal pollution risk identification index system has been constructed based on the principle of mass balance, including four major variables of enterprise production, atmospheric deposition, plant enrichment, and soil leaching along with twenty Secondary variables. Random Forest and Feature Importance analyzing methods have been used to establish prediction models and explore the importance of variables using detailed site soil pollution survey results. The results have shown that:（1） The mean value of the determination coefficient(R mean ~2=0.75) of the prediction model based on the site mean value of Random Forest has been found higher than that of the models based on the site maximum value(R mean ~2=0.62). The predicting ability of the model method towards the mean values of heavy metal pollution in sites has been found better than that of the maximum values in sites. The preciseness of the prediction models based on the mean values has been ranked as nickel, mercury, cadmium, lead, copper and arsenic from high to low, while the rank based on the maximum values is cadmium, nickel, arsenic, lead, copper and mercury from high to low. The determination coefficient of the prediction model based on the Nemerow comprehensive pollution index（R~2=0.84） has been found higher than the average level of the single heavy metal prediction models and lower than the mean-based prediction models of nickel（R~2=0.92） and mercury（R~2=0.91）；（2） The model has shown poor predicting ability for extremely high values, and the multi-source heterogeneous database has shown weak representing ability for such samples, which could be the main reason why the overall accuracy of the model based on the maximum value has been found lower than that of the model based on the mean value；（3）Based on the average importance of the characteristics, the industrial-environmental impact grade（15.57%）, the proportion of soil clay particles（9.55%）, the highway density（8.44%）, the enterprise operation time（7.31%）, the solar radiation intensity（7.06%）, and the enterprise establishment time（6.56%） have been addressed as the variable indicators closely related to soil heavy metal pollution. The purpose of this study has been set to provide a new approach to the analysis of heavy metal pollution in soil, which includes using multi-source heterogeneous data to identify potential areas where heavy metal pollution risks may exist, analyzing the important relationship between different heavy metal elements and feature variables, and providing more accurate information for the investigation of heavy metal pollution in soil and environmental protection.

Abstract:In key areas of ecological protection, it is significant to consider the similarity of pollution sources among heavy metals and the interaction between different sources, especially the ecological risk areas caused by heavy metal pollution. We collected 51 soil samples from five land use types with different soil depths in an industrial area on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Two and three major heavy metal combination types of Cd, Cu, Cr, Pb and Zn in different soil layers were identified using absolute principal component score-multiple linear regression models, and the potential pollution sources corresponding to the different types were quantified using Geo-Detector models. Factor-detector explanatory power of the land use type (q = 0.66) was much higher than that of the other factors of APCS1 in soil layer A, which was the most likely potential sources of Cd and Pb with high levels in urban land and irrigated land. Industrial activities, especially metallurgy and mining, are the most likely potential sources of Cd, Cu and Pb pollution. The downward migration of heavy metals in the study area was inferred from the similar trends of several indicators between soil layers A and B. The new model Nemerow Integrated Risk Index (NIRI) was used to analyse the integrated ecological risk across the study area and under different land use types by comparing with the pollution load index and Nemerow Integrated Pollution Index, and it was found that the risk level was lower in grassland and forest land than under other land use types, while it was higher in urban land and irrigated land. The contribution rate of Cd to NIRI values exceeded 80%, while the contribution rates of the 5 heavy metals to NIPI and PLI values are not significantly different, indicating that NIRI can highlight the impact of high cadmium toxicity factors on the overall risk level and is more accurate and flexible in identifying risk areas.

Abstract:The Jiangzhe Area was relatively common area that rely on industrial process for rapid development with serious heavy metals contamination. This study investigated the spatial, vertical and speciation distribution, correlation of heavy metals, as well as assessed pollution and health risks in three representative contamination industries at Jingjiang (electroplating site), Taizhou (e-waste recycling site) and Wenzhou (leather production site) in the Jiangzhe Area. The results indicated that the Cr(VI) pollution was serious in all three sites and there was a tendency to gradually decrease with depth. As for other heavy metals, not only the total concentration, but also the addition of acid soluble and reducible speciation generally decreased with soil depth at Jingjiang and Taizhou sites. Significantly positive correlations supported by correlation analysis were detected between the following elements: Cu-Ni (p < 0.01), Cr(VI)-Ni (p < 0.05) and Cr(VI)-Cu (p < 0.05) at Jingjiang site, Cu-Ni (p < 0.01), Cu-Cd (p < 0.01) and Ni-Cd (p < 0.05) at Taizhou site indicating possibly the same sources and pathways of origin, while the significantly negative correlation of Cd-Ni (p < 0.05) at Wenzhou site meaning the different sources. As regards the pollution assessment of topsoil, the mean PI value indicated that Cr(VI) contaminated severe in all three sites. In general, Jingjiang site was severe pollution (4.06), while Taizhou and Wenzhou (2.27 and 2.66) were moderate pollution, as NIPI value shown. In terms of health risk assessment that received much attention, non-carcinogenic risks caused by Pb contamination were significant for children at Jingjiang and Taizhou sites, with the HI values of 3.42E+ 00 and 2.03E+ 00, respectively. Ni caused unacceptable carcinogenic risk for both adults and children at all three sites. The present study can help to better understand the contamination characteristics of heavy metals in the commonly developed industrial area, and thus to control the environmental quality, so as to truly achieve the goal of ''Green Deal objectives ''.

Abstract:Identifying the current pollution status, future trends, and driving factors is a crucial prerequisite for protecting and managing soil environmental quality in light of the challenging soil heavy metal pollution situation. In this study, a typical industrial city in southeast China was selected as the study area. The environmental capacity of 12 heavy metals was first measured for the evaluation of soil heavy metal pollution, and then spatiotemporal change was simulated using indicator Kriging to warn the pollution risk. Finally, the driving factors of heavy metal pollution were analyzed using random forest and geographical detectors. The results revealed that the average environmental capacity index was 0.768, at a medium capacity level. The environmental capacity of each heavy metal showed a decreasing trend from 2016 to 2035. In 2035, the dynamic environmental capacity of each heavy metal element will have decreased by more than 75% if no preventative and remedial measures are taken. The distance from rivers, fine particulate matter, organic matter content, population density, and distance from industrial enterprises were the main factors contributing to heavy metal pollution in soil. The interaction effect of two environmental factors will mostly lead to the intensification of pollution. Based on the results, this study discussed strategies for controlling and remediating the polluted land. These findings could support the source investigation and early warning of soil heavy metal pollution, which are crucial to manag soil pollution and alleviating environmental quality issues.
Assessment of Heavy Metal Pollution in Soil and Classification of Pollution Risk Management and Control Zones in the Industrial Developed City

Abstract:Soil heavy metal pollution threatens ecological health and food security. It is significant to classify pollution risk management and control zones, which can effectively cope with soil pollution and scientifically carry out soil remediation projects. In this study, based on 665 soil samples collecting from Ningbo (southeast China), single pollution index and Nemerow composite pollution index (NCPI) were measured to assess soil pollution risk, and self-organization mapping model was applied to classify management and control zones. Results showed that the heavy metal pollution in the northwest part was more serious, while the east part was less polluted. Although more than 75% soil samples had negligible risks, the Hg and Cu pollution was greatly influential and notable as their polluted samples accounted for 24.21% and 12.48% respectively. Moreover, about 55.34% soil samples and more than half study region had pollution grades, and NCPI values were obviously high with the center of northwest study area. Results also showed that the study region could be classified into four zones with good spatial variabilities. Specifically, Monitored Zone with High-risk Pollution had the highest NCPI caused by human activities, while Controlled Zone with Severe Pollution had relatively high NCPI caused by industrial and agricultural production. Protected Zone with Ecological Conservation and Restricted Zone with Potential Pollution had low NCPIs attributing to historical or natural factors. Our study implies that the classified zones can provide fundamental and momentous information for establishing appropriate priorities of heavy metal risk management and control.

Abstract:The influences of different land uses associated with human activities on soil quality and the redistribution of heavy metal in soil have been widely concerned. Surface soil samples were obtained to assess comprehensive soil quality in a typical red soil region of southern China, combining the heavy metal pollution evaluation with fertility evaluation. It can be learned from the results that the overall level of soil fertility was at medium and lower level, and soil heavy metal pollution risk in the study area in a few regions had reached warning line and slight pollution line, and there was a risk of potential pollution. TOPSIS evaluation results showed that the comprehensive soil quality was mainly good quality and moderate quality, accounting for 31.7% and 29.0% of the total land area, respectively. Positive matrix factorization (PMF) model results showed that transportation source contributes a lot in terms of Cd and Pb. As for Cr, natural source contributes 53.8%. In terms of Cu and Zn, agriculture source contributes 50.7% and 38.7%, respectively. In a word, the comprehensive soil quality assessment in red soil region of southern China provides an important basis for the scientific management and sustainable utilization of soil resources.

Abstract:Improving the understanding and characterization of spatial soil heavy metal distribution is becoming an important component of risk assessment and environmental policy. In this work, 213 soil samples collected from Daye (Hubei Province, China) were used as the empirical dataset. First, maps of soil heavy metal distributions, including Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn, were obtained using the ordinary Kriging method. Then, the pollution index (PI) and integrated pollution index (IPI) were calculated based on the ordinary Kriging maps to obtain a comprehensive quantitative pollution characterization of the eight heavy metals in the Daye soil. The results showed that 46.1%, 32.1%, and 0.5% of the soil in the study region are moderately, highly and extremely polluted, respectively. Finally, the one- and two-point stochastic site indicators of IPI were used to assess quantitatively the uncertainties and risks associated with soil heavy metal distributions in the polluted regions. These results showed that the IPI values exceeding a specified threshold increased almost linearly with increasing threshold value, whereas the relative area of excess pollution decreased steadily with increasing threshold. Among the site pairs considered in the study region, about 70% and 26% of them simultaneously experienced moderate and high pollution risk, respectively.

Deciphering the pollution risks, sources and their links of heavy metals in soils

Abstract:Heavy metals in soils pose serious ecological and health risks. To make efficient strategies for mitigating the underlying hazards, it is critical to reveal the pollution sources and their links with the risks. Researchers have investigated source identification and risk evaluation of heavy metals in soils, yet few have systematically deciphered the source-sink relationship of soil metals and the links between source apportionment and risk assessment. In the study, an integrated technological framework has been proposed to address the gaps, and applied to characterize the pollution risks, sources and their links of soil metals in a typical coal resource city in China. The assessment using geochemical tool and ecological risk index shows the soils in study area are polluted by Cd, Hg, Cr, As and Pb in varied degrees, and particularly, Cd and Hg present significant ecological risk. Two advanced receptor models (multivariate curve resolution-weighted alternating least-squares and multilinear engine 2) are comparatively applied for apportioning the potential sources of soil metals, and the results suggest the two models have identified similar sources (r2 > 0.90), including agricultural activities, atmospheric depositions and industrial discharges with contributions of 35.5 %-38.3 %, 30.3 %-35.1 %, and 26.6 %-34.1 %, respectively. Then, apportionment results of the two models are jointly employed for evaluating the source-specific health risks of metals in the environment using a probabilistic risk assessment model. The risk levels within the area are overall acceptable or tolerable, and relatively, the industrial discharges present higher contribution on the non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks of soil metals to public. Findings will help the managers to design targeted policies for reducing the risks of soil metals, and the framework proposed provides a useful guideline to better understand the source-risk relationship of soil metals in other environments worldwide.

Abstract:In this research, Ningbo City, a typical industrial city in southeastern China, was selected as the study area, and the concentrations of 12 heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Ni, Pb, Zn, Cu, Hg, As, Co, V, Se, and Mn) were measured at 248 sampling points. Pollution index methods were used to assess the status of soil heavy metal contamination, and the Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) model and Unmix model were integrated to identify and apportion the sources of heavy metal contamination. The results indicated that nearly 70% of the study area was polluted by heavy metals, and that Ni, Cr, and Zn were the main enriched heavy metals. The five sources identified using the PMF model were a geological source, an atmospheric deposition source, a transportation emissions source, a mixed source of agriculture and industry, and a mixed source of geology and industry. The four sources identified using the Unmix model were a mixed source of geology, agriculture, and industry (14.27%); a transportation emissions source (4.76%); a geological source (14.7%); and a mixed source of geology and industry (66.28%). These results have practical significance, as they can help to carry out pollution source risk assessment and give priority to the management of pollution source control.

Abstract:PurposeThe effect of soil heavy metals on crops and human health is an important research topic in some fields (Agriculture, Ecology et al.). In this paper, the objective is to understand the pollution status and spatial variability of soil heavy metals in this study area. These results can help decision-makers apportion possible soil heavy metal sources and formulate pollution control policies, effective soil remediation, and management strategies.Materials and methodsA total of 212 topsoil samples (0–20 cm) were collected and analyzed for eight heavy metals (Cd, Hg, As, Cu, Pb, Cr, Zn, and Ni) from agricultural areas of Yingbao County in Lixia River Region of Eastern China, by using four indices (pollution index (PI), Nemerow pollution index (PIN), index of geo-accumulation (Igeo), Ei/risk index (RI)) and cluster analysis to assess pollution level and ecological risk level of soil heavy metals and combining with geostatistics to analyze the concentration change of heavy metals in soils. GS+ software was used to analyze the spatial variation of soil heavy metals, and the semi-variogram model is the main tool to calculate the spatial variability and provide the input parameters for the spatial interpolation of kriging. Arcgis software was used to draw the spatial distribution of soil heavy metals.Results and discussionThe result indicated that the eight heavy metals in soils of this area had moderate variations, with CVs ranging from 23.51 to 64.37 %. Single pollution index and Nemerow pollution index showed that about 2.7 and 1.36 % of soil sampling sites were moderately polluted by Cd and Zn, respectively. The pollution level of soil heavy metals decreased in the order of Cd > Zn > Pb > As > Cu > Cr > Ni > Hg. The Igeo values of heavy metals in this area decreased in the order of Zn > Cd > As > Pb > Cu > Cr > Hg > Ni. According to the Ei index, except Cd that was in the moderate ecological risk status, other heavy metals in soils were in the light ecological risk status, and the level of potential ecological risk (RI) of soil sampling sites of the whole area was light.ConclusionsThe results of four indices and the analysis of spatial variation indicated that the contents of Cd and Zn were contributed mainly by anthropogenic activities and located in the south-east of this study area. However, the contents of Hg, As, Cu, Pb, Cr, and Ni in soils were primarily influenced by soil parent materials.

Abstract:Heavy metal pollution in soil has received much attention in recent decades. Many studies have analyzed the contamination status, spatial distribution, and pollution sources of heavy metals. Little information is available on the interaction between cultivated land quality and soil heavy metal pollution. Combining soil quality information and intensive heavy metal sampling surveys, this study analyzed heavy metal contamination and the ecological and health risks of various soils with different quality levels. Additionally, through the PMF model and risk assessment techniques, the ecological and health risks of specific pollution sources and their interaction with soil quality were investigated. The results showed that the mean content of the studied elements followed the increasing order of Hg (0.12 mg/kg) < Cd (0.19 mg/kg) < As (6.98 mg/kg) < Pb (25.57 mg/kg) < Cr (72.02 mg/kg). In addition, with increasing soil quality, the concentrations of Pb, Cr and Hg as well as the overall ecological risk increased significantly. Regarding health risks, heavy metal pollution posed a higher risk to children than adults, and ingestion was the main exposure pathway. The total hazard index and carcinogenic risk also increased with increasing soil quality. The PMF analysis showed that Pb and Cr mainly came from industrial activities, As could be attributed to natural sources, Cd was mainly derived from agricultural activities, and Hg pollution was determined by coal combustion. Considering the risks of specific pollution sources, agricultural activities and coal combustion were the major reasons for high ecological risks, whereas industrial activities and coal combustion posed significantly higher risks in suburban high-quality soil. Industrial activities mainly determined the health risk, which contributed more than 50% to the total risk. There was an upward health risk trend with increasing soil quality. Industrial activities in high-quality suburban soil posed the highest health risk to both adults and children. Reasonable and effective policies should be formulated to control industrial pollution and improve the ecological environment in this area.

Abstract:<p>Heavy metal pollution is a notable threat to agricultural production. Soil heavy metal pollution can cause potential ecological risk (ERI), and crop heavy metal pollution can cause human health risk (HRI). However, most previous studies partially focused on heavy metal pollution in soil or crop but often neglected the relationship between them. Actually, soil heavy metal can pollute crops to some extent, while not all heavy metal pollution in crops comes from soil. The inner relationship of pollution risk in soil-crop system is worth attention. In this study, we selected Ningbo as the study region and used sample data to assess both soil and crop heavy metal risks, in order to explore the differences between heavy metal contamination risks in soil and crops as well as the relationships between heavy metal contents in soil and crops. Our results showed that Hg was the most polluted heavy metal in soil, which led to the highest ecological risk in Jiangbei (Comprehensive ERI = 567) with the maximum ERI of Hg (430). However, As in crops contributed the most to health risk and caused the highest health risk in Fenghua (HRI = 10) with the largest contribution of 64.5%. Such differences of pollution risk assessment indicated that the contents of the same heavy metal were inconsistent in soil and crops. Our results further showed that the heavy metals in soil had the greatest influence on Zn in crops. Pb and Cr in soil had synergistic effects on the crop absorption of Zn, whereas As, Hg and Cu played antagonistic roles in the crop absorption of Zn. Our study confirms that heavy metals in soil would variously influence heavy metals in crops and the interaction of heavy metals is very important for pollution risk control, which have been largely ignored yet.</p>

Abstract:This study analyzed the pollution level, distribution, sources, and ecological impact of six heavy metals (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Zn and Pb) in soil from Linli County, China. The concentration analysis showed that the concentration of Cd in all samples exceeded the background value, and the exceeding rate reached 100%, while the average concentrations of other elements were similar to the background value, and the exceeding rate was under 15%. The pollution level of Cd was the most severe according to geo-accumulation index and enrichment factor, while other elements were under mild pollution level. The results of self-organizing map (SOM) and positive matrix factorization (PMF) analysis showed that agricultural activities were one of the main sources of heavy metal elements in soil, and natural weathering and industrial pollution could also lead to soil pollution. Cd appeared to be the most significant pollutant element in the soil of Linli County, and it had the largest impact on the ecological environment. Overall, this study provides guidance for soil pollution control and related policies, aiming to reduce the pollution of heavy metal elements in soil and the hazards to the ecological system caused by agricultural production and industrial activities.

Abstract:In recent years, industrial waste and agrochemicals have reduced soil fertility and productivity, significantly impacting food security and ecosystems. In China, areas near red mud deposits from the aluminum industry show severe heavy metal contamination. This study examines agricultural soil near a red mud site in Shanxi Province, analyzing Cd, Cr, Hg, Ni, Pb, As, Cu, and Zn levels and distribution. Geostatistical methods and GIS are utilized to assess heavy metal pollution using the single factor index, the Nemerow integrated index, and the Hakanson potential ecological risk index. Absolute Principal Component Scores-Multiple Linear Regression (APCS-MLR) and Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) models are used for quantitative analysis of pollution sources. Research indicates that the average concentrations of eight heavy metals exceed the natural background values of Shanxi, placing them at a severe pollution level with moderate ecological risk. Specifically, indices for As, Pb, and Cr are 3.79, 3.38, and 3.26, indicating severe pollution; Cd, Cu, and Hg at 2.36, 2.62, and 3.00 suggest moderate pollution; Ni at 1.87 shows mild pollution, while Zn at 0.97 is not polluted. Hg presents the highest ecological risk with a coefficient of 120.00, followed by Cd (70.69) and As (37.92). Spatial analysis shows significant correlations among Pb, Zn, Cu, and Ni, while Cr, Cd, Hg, and As show greater variability and weaker correlations. Both models identify five main sources: industrial activities, agricultural fertilizers, red mud leachate, energy combustion, and natural geological backgrounds, with respective contribution rates in the APCS-MLR model at 27.7%, 24.6%, 18.1%, 15.2%, and 14.4%, and in the PMF model at 29.2%, 21.5%, 16.9%, 16.7%, and 15.7%. This study offers a scientific basis for controlling soil pollution in the region, filling a literature gap.

Abstract:It is of great significance to study the degree and source of soil heavy metal pollution in geological high background value area for remediation of local contaminated soil. The 0 - 20 cm topsoil was taken around the mining area, and the contents of Pb, Zn, Ni, Cd, Hg, Cu and As in the soil were measured. Single-factor pollution index, Nemeiro comprehensive pollution index and potential ecological risk index were used to evaluate the degree of heavy metal pollution and ecological risk. Finally, multivariate statistical analysis was used to analyze the sources of soil heavy metals. The results show that the measured elements are polluted to different degrees, mainly due to the ecological environment problems caused by extensive mining development methods and inefficient utilization of resources. The key link is the release of pollutants at the source. Effectively blocking the release at the source can cut off the possibility of pollutants entering the food chain and the circulation of materials in the ecosystem. The results of potential ecological risk index showed that the potential ecological damage of seven heavy metals was ranked as follows: Cd (97.67) > Hg (68.97) > As (14.29) > Pb (11.55) > Ni (4.62) > Zn (1.61) > Cu (1.45) had a high ecological risk coefficient, and the potential comprehensive ecological risk index was 200.16 and the degree was medium. Principal component analysis shows that the sources of heavy metals are divided into Pb, Cd, As, Zn and Hg mainly from human activities such As mining, while Ni and Cu mainly come from soil parent materials, mining and agricultural activities.

Abstract:Heavy metal pollution in peri-urban areas in China is serious and complex. We thus developed an integrated evaluation method to assess heavy metal pollution and potential health risk to residents in a typical peri-urban area with diverse anthropogenic emission sources and cropping systems. Ecological risk was evaluated using Nemerow's synthetical pollution index (Pn) and Potential ecological risk index (RI). Then polluted areas and responsible emission sources were identified by GIS mapping. Health risk caused by food intake and soil exposure was calculated by accounting for the influence of anthropogenic emissions and cropping systems. Agricultural soils in the study area were polluted by cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), lead (Pb), and arsenic (As). High concentrations mainly occurred near the mining area and along the roadsides. The accumulation of heavy metals in crops followed the order of tea leaves > rice grain > vegetables. The hazard index of potential human health risk caused by chronic soil exposure and food intake was 15.3, indicating obvious adverse health effects. 87.5% of health risk was attributed to food consumption, and significantly varied among different cropping systems with the decreasing order of rice (10.44) >vegetable (2.86) > tea (0.05). The integrated method of ecological and health risk index, which takes consideration of both anthropogenic emission and cropping system can provide a practical tool for evaluating of agricultural soil in the peri-urban area regrading different risk factors.
Quantitative assessment of human health risks under different land uses based on soil heavy metal pollution sources

Abstract:Risk assessments and source analyses are important tools for the control of heavy metal soil pollution. In this study, the receptor model positive matrix factor method (PMF) and the health risk model are used to quantitatively evaluate the human health risks (carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic) of different pollution sources. The results showed that nickel, copper, and lead were significantly enriched due to human activities. The PMF model identified four pollution sources, among which agricultural activities contributed the most to soil heavy metal contamination (33.72%). Although the non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks to children were higher than those of adults, the health risks to both cohorts showed the same trend in the different land-use types. In terms of cancer risk, agricultural activities were the largest source of pollution, accounting for 37%, 41%, and 38% of the carcinogenic risk in construction, agricultural, and forest lands, respectively. Non-carcinogenic risks were primarily due to industrial emissions, and industrial activity was second only to agricultural activity in carcinogenic risk. This suggests that sources that contain dangerous heavy metals, such as Cr may lead to higher health risks. The results of this study provide a scientific basis for the quantitative assessment of health risks under different land-use.

Abstract:With the rapid development of industrialization and urbanization, the issue of soil environmental pollution is becoming more and more prominent, especially concerning heavy metal contamination, which has garnered significant scholarly attention. The surface watershed formed by waterline is influenced by various factors such as topography, industrial emissions, and agricultural runoff, resulting in a complex process of migration and accumulation of heavy metal elements from multiple sources. In this study, the pollution characteristics and sources of heavy metal elements Hg, As, Pb, Ni, Cd, Cr, Cu and Zn in 165 surface soil samples from the Manghe River watershed in Jiyuan City were comprehensively analyzed using a variety of methods, including statistics, geostatistics, enriched factor analysis and the Positive Matrix Factorization Model (PMF). The results showed that the concentrations of Hg, Cd, As, Cu, Pb and Zn exceeded their corresponding background values with varying degrees of enrichment. Notably, the average contents of Cd, Hg and Pb were 26.70 times, 3.69 times and 4.49 times higher than those in Chinese soils on average, respectively, showing obvious enrichment characteristics. Moreover, there were distinct spatial distribution patterns for each heavy metal element; Ni and Cr exhibited similar trends mainly controlled by the parent material, while human activities significantly affect the other six elements forming high-value areas around mining and related industries. It is noteworthy that Cu, Hg and Zn were influenced by dominant wind direction in autumn and winter, forming sub-high-value zones in southern forested areas; meanwhile, Cu and Zn were also influenced by agricultural fertilizer application as well as surface runoff, leading to secondary high-value areas in the dryland areas. Further analysis revealed a significant positive correlation among these heavy metal elements, suggesting that they may share common sources. Through the PMF Model, four main factors were identified, with factor 2 (36.25%), factor 1 (23.00%), factor 3 (21.20%) and factor 4 (19.55%) ranked in descending order of contribution rate. The heavy metal pollution in the study area was attributed to anthropogenic activities and natural factors, accounting for 63.75% and 36.25%, respectively. Coal mining, chemical industry smelting, vehicle emissions and excessive use of agrochemicals were identified as the main sources of heavy metal pollution. These pollutants entered the soil through direct emissions, atmospheric deposition, transportation and agricultural activities, exerting a significant impact on the soil environment. Therefore, delving into the spatial distribution pattern of soil heavy metal pollution and precise analysis of its sources are of great importance for effective treatment and remediation of soil heavy metal pollution in small watersheds, maintaining healthy soil ecology and safeguarding human health.
