Abstract:This study represents the concentrations of 16 PAHs in a commercial aquatic species Sauridaund squamis; Euthynnus affinis; Rhabdosargus haffara; Argyrops Spinifer; Nemipterus Japonicus, Oreochromis Niloticus; Trachurus Indicus; Peneus Japonicas; Scomber Japonicus; and Pomadasys Stridens, which were collected from the coastal area of the Suez Gulf waters. The analyses of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were determined using HPLC to identify the sources of PAHs. The results revealed that low molecular weight of PAHs were more than high molecular weight in aquatic species, Benzo (a)Anthracene/(Benzo (a) Anthracene + Chrysene) BaA/(BaA + Chr), Indeno (1,2,3-cd) pyrene/(Indeno (1,2,3-cd) pyrene + Benzo (ghi) perylene) IP/(IP + BP) and Fluoranthene/Pyrene (Fl/Pyr), they reflected that the PAHs sources in aquatic species are petrogenic as a main sources, pyrogenic sources. The study area was generally contaminated with hydrocarbons and continuous consumption of food from this area may pose public health hazards.

Abstract:The surface sediments from eleven sectors perpendicular to the Egyptian Mediterranean Sea coast, along the delta region, have been assessed. These sectors cover areas of Eastern Harbour, Abu Qir Bay, Rosetta, Abo Khashaba, Burullus, Baltim, Damietta, and Manzala. The assessment process is based on determining the eight metals' (Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn, Ni, Co, Pb, and Cd) content, followed by applying different pollution and ecological risk indices such as enrichment factor (EF), geoaccumulation factor ( I geo ), contamination factor (CF), Pollution Load Index (PLI), degree of contamination ( C deg. ), Nemerow Integrated Pollution Index (NIPI), and Potential Ecological Risk Index (PERI). The results indicate the average concentrations of metals (μg/g) were Fe (18,000), Mn (213), Zn (120), Ni (26), Co (13), Cu (12), Pb (10), and Cd (2). The single-pollution indices reveal that most metals were depleted to metal levels, the sediments were moderately polluted with Cd and unpolluted with other metals, and the CF values confirmed that the sediments were highly polluted with Cd and low contaminated with the rest of the metals. According to the integrated pollution indices, the Eastern Harbour, Damietta, Manzalah, and Bardawil (eastern Inlet) are the most polluted sectors relative to the rest, subjected to various point sources of pollution. Drainage management system is recommended to enhance water conservation and improve fish stocks.

Abstract:Heavy metal pollution has a harmful impact on the health of all living beings. The goal of this study was to compare the impacts of zinc (Zn), lead (Pb), iron (Fe), and manganese (Mn) on two Egyptian streams in Aswan Governorate. In addition, aquatic Chironomidae larvae were exposed to a variety of heavy metal concentrations for two days. The mortality rate was determined, and the median lethal concentrations (LC50) were estimated. The most harmful metal for Chironomidae larvae was Pb, followed by Zn, Fe, and Mn. Metal bioconcentration in Chironomidae larvae increases with increasing concentrations of metals. The enzymatic response to heavy metals uptake in Chironomidae larvae; namely, lipid peroxidation, superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione-S-transferase, and glutathione peroxidase were determined. Although the Pb-treated group recorded the highest lipid peroxidation, it showed the lowest glutathione peroxidase activity. The glutathione-S-transferase enzyme was less active in the Zn-treated group, as was the superoxide dismutase enzyme, and the catalase enzyme was the least active in the Zn-treated group. Changes in randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) profiles were detected following heavy metal treatments at various doses when compared to controls. This study gives insight into how cruise ship activities and industrial pollution in rivers endanger aquatic life and hence, human life.
Evaluation of sediment quality for heavy metal(loid)s contamination and health risk assessment in the Gulf of Suez, Egypt

Abstract:The Gulf of Suez faces challenges related to contamination, primarily due to industrial, tourism, and shipping activities along its shores. This study aims to record the distribution, concentration, and potential environmental and health risk impacts of heavy metal(loid)s (HMs) in 30 surface sediment samples collected from Ras Sidr coastline, Gulf of Suez. Various contamination and health indices were employed for this study. The average concentrations of HMs (μg/g) were ranked as follows: Fe (3472), Mn (103.3), V (10.41), As (7.94), Cr (6.00), Zn (5.31), Ni (2.94). The spatial distribution of HMs indicated an increase in Mn, Zn, As, and V levels toward the southern part of the study area, potentially linked to the proximity of manganese quarries and their metal association at Abu Zenima. Contamination indices revealed moderately severe enrichment with As, minor enrichment with Mn, and no enrichment for the remaining HMs. Multivariate analysis suggested a natural origin for Cr, Fe, Mn, Ni, Zn, and V, while As were likely anthropogenic. Values of hazard index (HI) for HMs in both adults and children followed the descending order of As > Fe > Cr > V > Mn > Ni > Zn. However, all HI values were below 1.0, indicating no significant non-carcinogenic risk for individuals along the Ras Sidr coastline. 19 samples exhibited lifetime cancer risk (LCR) values exceeding 1 × 10-4 for As in children, suggesting potential carcinogenic risks. LCR values for As in adults and Cr in adults and children ranged from 1 × 10-5 to less than 1 × 10-6, indicating acceptable or tolerable levels of carcinogenic risk and no significant threats to health.

Abstract:The objective of this review is to provide a comprehensive assessment of the threats posed by persistent toxic substances (PTS) to the environment and human health in Egypt and to identify priorities, data gaps and recommendations for future intervention to control, reduce or eliminate releases of PTS. Data on available concentrations of persistent toxic substances in the different environmental compartments and their impacts on the ecosystem, and humans have been assembled and summarized. Despite extensive studies, most of the data available deal with limited studies or hot spot situations. Localized inputs of PTS have been identified from freshwater discharges in coastal areas (e.g., Nile estuaries and coastal lakes) and near sewage outfalls from highly industrialized and populated cities. Data are often missing for certain contaminants and in some compartments and geographical areas. The lack of standardized methodologies makes it difficult to compare and use existing data to provide exact conclusions on spatial and temporal trends. In spite of these restrictions, available data indicate that it is unlikely that present levels of cyclodiene pesticides would adversely affect marine organisms. Compounds which are proven to be of concern are DDT, PCBs, gamma-HCH, PAHs, HCB and organotin compounds. Other compounds are suspected to be ubiquitous but data are lacking. Based on few recent data, the reported levels of organochlorine pesticides in fish and human milk samples suggest a concentration decline during the 1990s consistent with the regulatory restrictions on the use of these compounds. It is essential to activate monitoring programs to fill data gaps in appropriate abiotic and biotic. Monitoring programs should be follow standard procedures and include improved QA/QC protocols.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are a serious threat in freshwater environments. The ecological risk and abundance level of MPs in abiotic and biotic compartments of the Nile River haven't been systematically reported. Thus, these issues were highlighted in the present study during different seasons of the sampling year. The results showed that MP concentrations in the river ranged from 2.24 ± 0.6 to 3.76 ± 1.1 particles/L, 298 ± 63 to 520 ± 80 particles/kg dry weight, and 0.081 ± 0.051 to 4.95 ± 2.6 particles/individual in surface water, sediment, and different species of aquatic insects, respectively. All the extracted MPs are colored blue, red, and black. Fiber-shaped polyesters (<500–1500 μm) were the most common MPs in all the river compartments. MPs' dominance was observed during the summer in comparison with that in the other seasons. Environmental risk indicators indicate the high ecological risk of MPs, which are widely distributed in the Nile River. In conclusion, MP consumption by aquatic insects may not only be related to levels of environmental contamination, since other variables, such as taxon size, weight, and particular feeding behavior, may also be significant. Additionally, the presence of MPs in insects (at lower trophic levels) creates the potential for predation-based inter-trophic level transmission. Thus, higher trophic-level investigations of various feeding groups should be carried out to identify any possible harm that MPs cause to various aquatic organisms.

Abstract:In a series of 148 patients with essential hypertension, the presence of the atherosclerotic C3-F gene and HLA-antigen frequences were investigated, and the results were compared with those in 62 age and sex matched normotensive controls. The frequency of C3-F was significantly higher in patients (p less than 0.03), as was HLA-B15 in patients with a positive family history of hypertension (p less than 0.05). The presence of the C3-F gene was associated with an increased risk (= 10.2) for coronary heart disease, and B15 was associated with an increased risk (= 6.0) for cerebral events in both familial and non familial cases of hypertension. It is suggested that determination of the C3-F gene and HLA-antigens might be a tool in the identification of hypertensive patients at particular high risk for vascular events, irrespective of BP levels. The study support the suggestions that some genetic factors may act via immunological pathways.
Assessment of heavy metals contamination of sediments and surface waters of Bitter lake, Suez Canal, Egypt: Ecological risks and human health

Abstract:The concentrations of heavy metals in the surface waters and sediments of Bitter Lake were investigated to assess the level, distribution, and source of pollution and the associated ecological and human health risks. The ecological indices of the lake water indicate low contamination degrees by heavy metals. A dermal exposure-based health risk evaluation revealed no carcinogenic or non-carcinogenic impact on human health. The contamination factor (CF) for Cu, Ni, Pb, Mn, Fe, and Zn (CF < 1) indicate low contamination levels, while Cd reaches very high contamination in most sediment sites (CF ranges from 6.2 to 72.4). Furthermore, the potential ecological risk factor (Eri) and modified hazard quotient (mHQ) indicate low ecological risk for all metals except Cd, revealing high to very high-level ecological risk in most sites (Eri ranges from 185 to 2173 and mHQ from 1.8 to 6.3). This emphasizes the urgency of prompt actions to improve the environment in Bitter Lake.

Abstract:Abstract Twenty-nine sediment samples were collected from the Hurghada Bay, a heavily polluted bay on the Red Sea of Egypt, to inspect the environmental quality status and anthropogenic consequences on benthic foraminifera. Some foraminiferal species showed deformations in their apertures and coiling directions as a response to environmental stresses. In addition, the FoRAM index, an index used for evaluating the growth of coral reefs, indicated a hazard in the proximity of nearshore stations. To elucidate the relationships between the biological response and chemistry of sediments, eight heavy metals concentrations (Cu, Cd, Zn, Pb, As, Cr, Ni, and Mn) were analyzed using inductively coupled plasma–atomic emission spectrometers (ICP-AES). Interestingly, two groups of benthic foraminiferal associations were illustrated using multivariate statistical analyses. Group I have extremely high heavy metal concentrations, an enriched total organic matter (TOM)%, high deformation percentages, and mud content. Moreover, it is dominated by Ammonia tepida which is regarded as an opportunistic species. Group II includes low to moderately polluted stations, highly enriched living foraminiferal assemblages, and is dominated by the sensitive rotaliids Neorotalia calcar and Amphistegina lobifera . Alternatively, four geochemical indices, EF, CF, I geo , and PLI, are used to assess the contamination level that shown ominous spots for the nearshore stations of the Hurghada Bay. The pollution indices (HQ and HI) were also conducted to evaluate the risks of carcinogenic heavy metals on human health. Our findings demonstrated that ingestion and dermal exposure have greater carcinogenic hazards for adults and children than inhalation. The lifetime carcinogenic risk (LCR) is significantly higher than the permissible limit and follows this order: Pb > As > Cr > Cd > Ni. To that end, developing strategies to lessen the negative impact of pollution on human health and/or the Red Sea’s biodiversity is an inevitable issue in the present day and future.

Abstract:This study assessed pollution levels, ecological and health risks, and spatial distribution of eight heavy metals in sediments of Wadi El-Gemal Island, south Marsa Alam, Red Sea, Egypt. The analyzed metals (mg/kg) followed a decreasing order: Fe ˃ Mn ˃ Zn ˃ Co ˃ Pb > Ni ˃ Cu > Cd. Principle component analysis (PCA) of the investigated metals showed significant loadings of Mn, Ni, Fe (geogenic source) and Cd, Pb, and Zn (anthropogenic source). Twelve ecological, sediment quality guidelines (SQGs), and health risk indices were applied. Enrichment factor (EF) values in sediments showed low (Cu), minimal (Ni), moderate (Pb, Mn, and Zn), and significant enrichment (Cd and Co), while contamination factor (CF) showed low contaminated sediments (CF <1). Geo-accumulation index (I geo ) showed uncontaminated (Cd), moderately to strongly contaminated (Pb, Cu, Ni), strongly contaminated (Co), and extremely contaminated sediments (Fe, Mn, Zn). Pollution load index (PLI) and degree of contamination (DC) indicated low contamination, whereas Nemerow pollution index (NPI) showed unpolluted sediments (NPI ≤1). Potential ecological risk index (PERI) indicated low risk (PERI <150). The SQGs mean effects range median quotient (MERMQ) indicated low-priority risk level of toxicity (MERMQ ≤0.1), and toxic risk index (TRI) showed low toxic risk in the island's sediments (TRI <5). Hazard index (HI) levels for all metals indicated low chronic non-carcinogenic risks (HI <1). Total cancer risk (TCR) levels of Cd, Pb, and Ni were below U.S. EPA permissible limit (1×10 −4 ), while Cd had the highest TCR levels for children and adults.

Abstract:Sediments are periodically dredged from the major ports in the Gulf of Gabes (GG) during maintenance operations. These sediments are dumped near the coats of Sfax and Gabes cities. In the present study, 6 trace metals (Cd, Cu, Cr, Ni, Pb, and Zn) concentrations were assessed in both sediments and column water taken from the different basins of Sfax port. This study is the first to focus on the microbial and microalgae contaminations of Sfax port sediments. The spatial distributions of trace metals in dredged sediments from the different basins of Sfax port show that the maximum concentrations of Cd (13.75 μg/g), Cu (892.5 μg/g), and Zn (1447 μg/g) exceeded the Geode standard thresholds. The same elements, also detected in the water column, exceeded the toxicity thresholds for phytoplankton, shellfish, and algae (Cd 0.095 μg/l, Cu 4.52 μg/l, and Zn 37 μg/l). The presence of coliforms, indicators of sewage pollution, as pathogenic germs ( Pseudomonas ), was shown through microbiological examinations of the sediments and water column. The microalgae enumeration showed the abundance of dinoflagellate cysts (stressed form) which attests to the presence of severe conditions in Sfax port. Different toxic species were identified as Prorocentrum lima and Alexandrium minutum. The same trace metal sources and abundance in Sfax port and GG sediments suggest the hypothesis of their transfer from their disposal sites in coastal areas to deeper depths in the GG and until Boughrara lagoon (BL). As trace metals, microalgae species were also transferred by hydrodynamic currents inside the GG where they found suitable conditions to their proliferation causing the seawater coloration phenomenon, eutrophication, and degradation of the aquatic system.

Abstract:Abstract This study investigated the effect of heavy metals on the pearl oyster Pinctada radiata from 5 sites along the coast of Alexandria, with focus on its ecological health and potential risks to human consumption. Pollution results showed that Abu-Qir had the highest Cu and Cd values. Montaza and Eastern Harbor had the highest Fe and Pb values, respectively. Statistically, differences in metal concentrations among study sites were significant ( p < 0.05). Non-carcinogenic risk (TTHQ) of tested metals and carcinogenic ones of Cd and Pb showed “high risk” on human health by consuming pearl oysters. Morphometric measurements and condition indices were studied to assess growth patterns and health in relation to heavy metals exposure. Key findings showed detectable declines in size and condition index in Eastern Harbor, whereas Abu-Qir recorded the highest values. This condition index performance presented Abu-Qir, Mammora, and Miami as ideal locations for spat collection and oyster rearing, potentially enhancing Egyptian pearl farming. Average values of spatial proximate contents of pearl oyster showed that it was rich in proteins (33.07–58.52%) with low fat content (1.39–1.87%) and carbohydrates (9.72–17.63%). Biochemical composition of pearl oyster demonstrated its high nutritional value which supported its promotion as a functional food for human consumption. The calorie content of pearl oyster was less than 2 Kcal, making this species an alternative source of healthy food to reduce obesity. Regression analysis indicated that Cu, Cd, and Pb had significant effect on 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging activity, calories, vitamins, and pigment content of the collected oysters.

Abstract:In this paper we present a framework for enhancing trust in Internet commerce. Experience shows that efficient cryptographic protocols are not enough to guarantee peoples’ confidence in Internet commerce; the transacting parties must also trust each other. Hence, the main ingredient missing in today’s e‐commerce infrastructures is modeling and implementing trust. Several attempts have been made to provide secure and trusted protocols but few have seen any practical use. This paper shows how trust can be provided through a network of Trust Service Providers (TSp). We have identified a set of services that should be offered by a TSp. We also present a distributed object‐oriented implementation of trust services using CORBA, JAVA and XML.

Abstract:Bivalves are considered a main consumed matrix for coastal communities worldwide and classified as hyperaccumulators of pollutants. The present study aims to determine some micro-organisms, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and okadaic acid (OA) levels in Cerastoderma glaucum collected from Temsah Lake, Egypt, and their induction through histopathological damage and caspase-3 protein expression. During the autumn, it was found different types of biological and chemical pollutants, especially benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) that accumulated in C. glaucum soft tissues and exceeded the safety limit for shellfish consumption. Dioxin-like PCB3 was predominant in C. glaucum soft tissues during autumn, but the total levels of PCBs in these tissues have not exceeded the permissible limit. Chlorophyll-a (Chl. a), nutrient concentrations, and Prorocentrum lima dinoflagellates in the water significantly increased during autumn. High P. lima abundance was confirmed by high OA in the soft tissues during this season compared to the other seasons. The measured contaminants may render C. glaucum more susceptible to bacterial and fungal infections. The autumn season showed a significant increase in the colony-forming units (CFU). C. glaucum showed calcification abnormalities and adhering of abnormal brown organic material to the inner surface of the shell valves, which was related to poor water conditions and Vibrio infection. Damages or injuries on gills and digestive gland tissues indicated an impact of the pollutants on C. glaucum. Also, high expressions of caspase-3 were recorded in these tissues during all the seasons. So, C. glaucum cockles, collected from Temsah Lake, may induce serious diseases to consumers, especially when eaten raw or insufficient cooking.

Abstract:Abstract Samples of water, sediment and two native plants ( Eichhornia crassipes and Ceratophyllum demersum ), collected seasonally from eight sites, were analyzed to investigate the level of contamination with metals (Fe, Mn, Ni, Co, Zn, Cu, Cr, Pb and Cd) in the Nile River in the Cairo region, using heavy metal pollution and contamination indices in the case of water, and the geoaccumulation index, the pollution load index, the enrichment factor and the potential ecological risk factor in the case of sediment. The results clarified that the levels of metals among three compartments were in order: sediments > plants > water. The Nile water in Cairo is not critically polluted by the studied metals and the metal pollution index for most sites does not exceed the critical limit (< 100). Sediment samples showed a clear accumulation of Mn, Ni and Cd when compared with benchmarks cited by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), especially during low flow seasons. The contribution of Cd to the ecological risk assessment was about 80%, while the contribution of Ni was about 10%, reflecting that these elements originated primarily from anthropogenic sources. Eichhornia crassipes and Ceratophyllum demersum have a higher accumulation capacity for Mn, Cu and Fe compared to the other studied metals.

Abstract:Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are commonly found in the marine environment and can have harmful impacts on marine biodiversity. Therefore, investigation of the occurrence, source and risks of PAHs is of great importance to protect ecosystem and human health. The objectives of this work were to assess the concentrations and distribution of PAHs in marine sediments and in mollusc bivalve (Callista chione) along the Mediterranean coasts of Morocco and finally evaluate the risk to human health caused by exposure to PAHs. Five sediments samples and seventy five C. chione specimens, were collected along the Moroccan Mediterranean coasts. The ∑PAHs levels in sediment varied considerably, varying from 1 to 251 ng/g with an average of 50.38 ng/g, while values for bivalves varied from 1 to 51 ng/g dw with an average concentration of 16.76 ng/g dw. The PAHs profile indicates the dominance of 2 and 3 rings PAHs both in bivalves and sediments. PAH concentrations generally rise as one moves from northeast to northwest part of the studied area, closer to the Strait of Gibraltar. The assessment of PAH isomeric ratios revealed a mixed pyrolytic/petrogenic source. Based on the sediment quality guidelines (SQGs), the risk of PAHs in the sediments was considered to be comparatively low. Similarly, Ecological risk assessment based on risk quotient (RQ) and toxic equivalency factors (TEFs) revealed potentially low ecological risks from PAHs. Exposure to PAHs via bivalve consumption does not cause adverse impacts on the health of consumers following the calculated health risk indices. As the levels of PAHs in biota are not negligible, continuous mentioning marine organisms campaigns should be performed to highlight the distribution and concentration of PAHs and assess the risk for human health from consumption of seafood.

Abstract:This study aimed to assess the influence of pollution on the quality of sediments and the risks associated with El-Qusier and Safaga Cities, Red Sea, Egypt, during 2021, divided into four sectors, using multiple pollution indices. To achieve that, we evaluated the metal pollution index (MPI), contamination factor (Cf), pollution load index (PLI), contamination security index (CSI), and anthropogenicity (Anp%). Moreover, carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks are used for human health hazards. Results indicated that Mn and Fe recorded the highest concentrations, whereas Cd had the lowest. El-Quseir City sediments were found the following metal ions: Fe > Mn > Ni > Zn > Cu > Co > Pb > Cd, where the order in the Safaga City was: Fe > Mn > Zn > Ni > Cu > Pb > Co > Cd. MPI > 1, this is alarming in the study area due to heavy metal pollution. In addition, C f < 1 in all metals except Cd with contamination degree CD ranged from low to considerable contamination in El-Qusier city. In contrast, contamination ranged from significant to very high in Safaga city. PLI < 1 is lower than the reference at all monitored stations. CSI values ranged from relatively low to moderate. Besides Cd, data reflect each element's low environmental danger (Eri Me 40). This study's risk index (RI) is low to moderate in Sector 1 and high to extremely high in Sector 2. HQ and HI index < 1 means it is safe for human health in order: HI ingestion > HI dermal . CSR for different pathways was recorded as dermal > ingestion, in which total CSR for all paths is considered harmful, and the cancer risk is troublesome and higher than the reference ranges of 1 × 10 –6 –1 × 10 –4 . In conclusion, the examined heavy metals provide environmental hazards across the assessed locations.
