Abstract:Water pollution with pesticides is one of the most important environmental problems. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) reach water bodies via agricultural discharge. The aim of this study was to determine the contamination of different water bodies with PCB congeners, and detect the correlation between water quality parameters and seasonal distribution of these PCBs. The results indicated that water canals of AlGharbiah showed the highest ranges of temperature, total dissolved solids (TDS) in spring, and dissolved oxygen (DO) in autumn, while AlQaliobiah water bodies witnessed the highest pH and electrical conductivity (EC) ranges in summer. The highest range of a PCB congener was that of PCB44 (7.96-118.29 µg/g) in sediment samples of Giza, followed by its range (18.01-85.44 µgL-1) in surface water of AlQaliobiah. We found a potential cancer risk from dermal contact with all the investigated PCBs. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed positive correlations between most PCBs and each of EC and TDS, and a negative correlation with DO. While the correlation between PCBs and each of temperature and pH varied according to the geographic location of the governorate. In conclusion, the investigated water canals were contaminated with PCBs, which posed a potential cancer risk and deteriorated water quality.

Abstract:The levels, the sources and the potential risks associated with twelve dioxin-like PCBs were investigated in the sediments of the Soummam River in northeastern Algeria. Total dl-PCBs concentrations ranged from 3.64 ng/g to 9.38 ng/g with PCB 118 and PCB 105 being the predominant congeners. Principal component analysis suggested that commercial mixtures and municipal waste incineration could be responsible for the presence of PCBs in the region. TEQ values ranged from 12.93 pg/g to 60.98 pg/g indicating adverse effects on aquatic organisms. Moreover, cancer risk assessed via Total Lifetime Cancer Risk (TLCR) suggested that for all the stations, the risk was low but not negligible. Additionally, the non-cancer risk was significant at half of the stations for children but negligible for adults at all the stations. Consequently, measures must be taken by local authorities to protect the environment and the human health.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate for the first time the contamination source and the ecological risk associated to organochlorinated compounds in the Litani system. For this purpose, the levels of 7 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and 13 organochlorinated pesticides (OCPs) were assessed, using a microwave-assisted extraction coupled to gas chromatography-electron capture detector (MAE/GC-ECD) method, in surficial sediments from 30 sites along the main course of the river, two major tributaries, and the Quaraoun Lake. ∑7PCBs exhibited total concentrations ranging from 0.11 to 8 ng g−1 of dry weight and are not able apparently to pose ecological risks since none of the samples showed concentration above the effects range low (ERL) guideline (22.7 ng g−1). The detected levels of OCPs in the river were significantly higher than those of PCBs; ∑13OCPs range from 0.5 to 46.5 ng g−1 of dry weight. Overall, the integrated eco-toxicological risk imposed by the organochlorine contamination in the Litani River, estimated as the mean effects range medium quotient (mERMq), is considered low with risk probability lower than 21% in all sites. The six dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane-based pesticides (∑6DDT) contributed to more than 70% of the mERMq in 15 over the 29 included sites. Moreover, the approach of ∑6DDT/∑7PCB ratios was applied to investigate the contamination source. ∑6DDT/∑7PCB was higher than one in all samples suggesting that the organochlorine contamination result from agricultural activities set in the surrounding areas of the Litani River.

Assessment of persistent toxic substances in the environment of Egypt

Abstract:The objective of this review is to provide a comprehensive assessment of the threats posed by persistent toxic substances (PTS) to the environment and human health in Egypt and to identify priorities, data gaps and recommendations for future intervention to control, reduce or eliminate releases of PTS. Data on available concentrations of persistent toxic substances in the different environmental compartments and their impacts on the ecosystem, and humans have been assembled and summarized. Despite extensive studies, most of the data available deal with limited studies or hot spot situations. Localized inputs of PTS have been identified from freshwater discharges in coastal areas (e.g., Nile estuaries and coastal lakes) and near sewage outfalls from highly industrialized and populated cities. Data are often missing for certain contaminants and in some compartments and geographical areas. The lack of standardized methodologies makes it difficult to compare and use existing data to provide exact conclusions on spatial and temporal trends. In spite of these restrictions, available data indicate that it is unlikely that present levels of cyclodiene pesticides would adversely affect marine organisms. Compounds which are proven to be of concern are DDT, PCBs, gamma-HCH, PAHs, HCB and organotin compounds. Other compounds are suspected to be ubiquitous but data are lacking. Based on few recent data, the reported levels of organochlorine pesticides in fish and human milk samples suggest a concentration decline during the 1990s consistent with the regulatory restrictions on the use of these compounds. It is essential to activate monitoring programs to fill data gaps in appropriate abiotic and biotic. Monitoring programs should be follow standard procedures and include improved QA/QC protocols.

Abstract:This study aimed to assess the influence of pollution on the quality of sediments and the risks associated with El-Qusier and Safaga Cities, Red Sea, Egypt, during 2021, divided into four sectors, using multiple pollution indices. To achieve that, we evaluated the metal pollution index (MPI), contamination factor (Cf), pollution load index (PLI), contamination security index (CSI), and anthropogenicity (Anp%). Moreover, carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks are used for human health hazards. Results indicated that Mn and Fe recorded the highest concentrations, whereas Cd had the lowest. El-Quseir City sediments were found the following metal ions: Fe > Mn > Ni > Zn > Cu > Co > Pb > Cd, where the order in the Safaga City was: Fe > Mn > Zn > Ni > Cu > Pb > Co > Cd. MPI > 1, this is alarming in the study area due to heavy metal pollution. In addition, C f < 1 in all metals except Cd with contamination degree CD ranged from low to considerable contamination in El-Qusier city. In contrast, contamination ranged from significant to very high in Safaga city. PLI < 1 is lower than the reference at all monitored stations. CSI values ranged from relatively low to moderate. Besides Cd, data reflect each element's low environmental danger (Eri Me 40). This study's risk index (RI) is low to moderate in Sector 1 and high to extremely high in Sector 2. HQ and HI index < 1 means it is safe for human health in order: HI ingestion > HI dermal . CSR for different pathways was recorded as dermal > ingestion, in which total CSR for all paths is considered harmful, and the cancer risk is troublesome and higher than the reference ranges of 1 × 10 –6 –1 × 10 –4 . In conclusion, the examined heavy metals provide environmental hazards across the assessed locations.

Abstract:The pollution characteristics, potential sources, and potential ecological risk of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were investigated in the Hangzhou Bay (HZB) and East China Sea (ECS). Total OCPs concentration ranged from 2.62 to 102.07 ng/L and 4.41 to 75.79 μg/kg in the seawater and sediment samples, with PCBs concentration in the range of 0.40–51.75 ng/L and 0.80–45.54 μg/kg, respectively. The OCPs were positively correlated with nutrients, whereas PCBs presented a negative correlation. The newly imported dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) in HZB is mainly the mixing of technical DDT and dicofol sources. The PCB source composition is more likely related to the mixture of Kanechlor 300, 400, Aroclor 1016, 1242, and Aroclor 1248. Risk assessment results indicate that OCPs posed low risk in seawater. The potential risk of DDTs in the sediments is a cause of concern.

Abstract:The surface sediments from eleven sectors perpendicular to the Egyptian Mediterranean Sea coast, along the delta region, have been assessed. These sectors cover areas of Eastern Harbour, Abu Qir Bay, Rosetta, Abo Khashaba, Burullus, Baltim, Damietta, and Manzala. The assessment process is based on determining the eight metals' (Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn, Ni, Co, Pb, and Cd) content, followed by applying different pollution and ecological risk indices such as enrichment factor (EF), geoaccumulation factor ( I geo ), contamination factor (CF), Pollution Load Index (PLI), degree of contamination ( C deg. ), Nemerow Integrated Pollution Index (NIPI), and Potential Ecological Risk Index (PERI). The results indicate the average concentrations of metals (μg/g) were Fe (18,000), Mn (213), Zn (120), Ni (26), Co (13), Cu (12), Pb (10), and Cd (2). The single-pollution indices reveal that most metals were depleted to metal levels, the sediments were moderately polluted with Cd and unpolluted with other metals, and the CF values confirmed that the sediments were highly polluted with Cd and low contaminated with the rest of the metals. According to the integrated pollution indices, the Eastern Harbour, Damietta, Manzalah, and Bardawil (eastern Inlet) are the most polluted sectors relative to the rest, subjected to various point sources of pollution. Drainage management system is recommended to enhance water conservation and improve fish stocks.

Abstract:With the prohibition of conventional organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), the extensive use and continuous release of current-use pesticides (CUPs), such as organic amine pesticides (OAPs) and organophosphate pesticides (OPPs), in agriculture and mariculture activities have raised global attention. In this study, the occurrence and distribution of 36 pesticides from above 3 categories were investigated in seawater and sediment in Beibu Gulf, a typical subtropical agricultural and maricultrual zone. Results showed that pesticides were widely present in this region with the total concentration ranging from 0.36 to 21.07 ng/L in seawater and from 0.02 to 9.73 ng/g dw in sediment. OAPs and OPPs were the most abundant categories contributing 74% and 66% to the total pesticides burden in seawater and sediment, respectively, revealing the current-use pesticides as substitutes of legacy organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) were mainly used in surrounding areas. For both seawater and surface sediment, the spatial distribution of pesticides concentrations showed generally seaward decreasing trends, suggesting that anthropogenic activities at coastal areas have an important impact on pesticides pollution. Source identification indicated OCPs in some seawater samples might be from mixture of antifouling paint and dicofol usage, while history residues are main sources of OCPs in sediment. OAPs, especially for cyflufenamid and kresoxim-methyl, mainly come from agricultral and maricultural sewage input, and OPPs were speculated from currency transportation from surrounding areas. Ecological risk assessment showed that OPPs posed moderate to even high risks in most seawater sites. It appears that crustaceans are the most sensitive trophic species to OPPs among aquatic organisms, followed by fish. According to the results of health risks proposed by the major aquatic products in Beibu Gulf (fish and shrimp), the selected pesticides pose no health risk to humans. Nevertheless, OCPs made the highest contribution to the total HQ values. Comprehensively considering the evaluation results of both ecological and health risks, more attention should be given on OPPs and OCPs pollution in the Beibu Gulf.

Abstract:Selected persistent organochlorine pollutants, including DDT and its metabolites, hexachlorobenzene, dieldrin, Aldrin, heptachlor, HCH as well as some of their isomers were determined in water, sediment and fish samples from the Ethiope River in Southern Nigeria. Twenty organochlorine pesticides were detected in both seasons from October 2012 – September 2013. Results revealed ∑HCH to be 0.620μg/L (water), 33 ng/g (sediment) and 29.00 ng/g (fish) for the rainy season while concentrations of 0.170 μg/L (water), 14 ng/g (sediment) and 28.00 ng/g (fish) were obtained for the dry season. 0.05–0.15 ng/g for aldrin, 0.12–5.8 ng/g for dieldrin, 0.22–0.64 ng/g for endrin, 0.24–6.37 ng/g for endosulfan and 0.21–8.81 ng/g for ΣDDT (p, p` -DDD, p, p` -DDE, p, p` -DDT). Among the OCPs, ∑HCH, endosulfan and PDDT were the most dominant compounds in the river sediments. γ- HCH was the most frequent detected compound in all the samples from this river. Among the cyclodiene compounds, aldrin was in abundance in most of the sediments, water and fish samples. γ-HCH, γ-HCH and HCB contributed this highest value for the water, sediment and fish sample respectively in the rainy season while aldrin, endrin and HCB were the highest contributors to the ΣOCPs to the mean of water, sediment and fish respectively. Hazard quotient and bioaccumulation analysis carried out on the fish sample revealed that the fishes were heavily contaminated with values >1 for both seasons which possess a possibility for ecological concern.

Abstract:In the present study, 18 polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) compounds were measured in marine sediments collected from 49 offshore stations in the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman in 2019. After the last oceanographic cruise in 2006, no study has been performed on the offshore sediments of this region, and this is the first study on the PCBs in this area. The total amount of PCB compounds in the sediment samples ranged from 74.38 ng kg −1 (near Abu Musa Island) to 1212.98 ng kg −1 (near Siri and Kish Island). The maximum and minimum values of the individual detected PCB compounds were 175.88 ng kg −1 (PCB52) and 2.09 ng kg −1 (PCB156), respectively. The levels of total PCBs detected in sediments were lower than the Canadian interim sediment quality guideline value of 21500 ng kg −1 for marine sediments. The sedimentary mass inventories for Σ 18 PCBs were 0.6 and 0.2 mt for the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman, respectively.

Abstract:Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were analysed from sediment samples collected in 2012 from rivers, surface runoff canals and estuaries in three highly urbanised catchments in durban, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. PAHs were ubiquitous, at concentrations between 36–6 800 ng g−1 dry mass (dm). Congener ratio diagnosis suggests the PAHs were derived predominantly from pyrogenic sources. Four OCPs and/or their metabolites were detected at varying frequencies and concentrations. Of these, dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (ddT) and metabolites were most frequently detected and were at a high concentration in sediment in some systems. Toxaphene was detected at a high concentration at some sites. The total PCB concentration varied widely, from below the method detection limit to 110 ng g−1 (dm). Based on the comparison of chemical concentrations to international sediment quality guidelines, PAH, OCP and PCB concentrations in most sediment samples posed a low risk to sediment-dwelling organisms. However, in some instances the risk was moderate or high. It is recommended that these compounds be monitored more frequently and comprehensively in aquatic ecosystems to better understand the ecological and human health implications.

Abstract:In this study, the nationwide monitoring of 65 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and 23 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in surface sediments was conducted at 77 sites in river networks in South Korea. The concentrations of ∑PCBs were relatively high in industrial sites (0.0297–138 ng/g dry weight (dw); mean 15.1 ng/g dw; median 5.44 ng/g dw), followed by industrial and agricultural (not detected (ND)–15.2 ng/g dw; mean 1.23 ng/g dw; median 0.513 ng/g dw), other sites (0.0369–0.209 ng/g dw; mean 0.116 ng/g dw; median 0.101 ng/g dw), and agricultural (0.0119–0.359 ng/g dw; mean 0.117 ng/g dw; median 0.0476 ng/g dw). The distribution and composition of PCBs in sediments are affected by past use of commercial products, atmospheric deposition, wastewater effluents, and manufacturing processes. The concentrations of ∑OCPs in industrial sites ranged from 0.0587 to 8.70 ng/g dw (mean 1.85 ng/g dw; median 0.989 ng/g dw), followed by industrial and agricultural (ND–8.54 ng/g dw; mean 0.739 ng/g dw; median 0.343 ng/g dw), other sites (0.0247–0.143 ng/g dw; mean 0.0939 ng/g dw; median 0.114 ng/g dw), and agricultural (0.00838–0.931 ng/g dw; mean 0.232 ng/g dw; median 0.0752 ng/g dw). Hexachlorobenzene and pentachlorobenzene are unintentionally generated in industries and combustion processes. Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethanes and chlordane were dominantly distributed by historical use, whereas recent inputs (i.e., long-range transport and atmospheric deposition) were related to aldrin, heptachlor, and hexachlorocyclohexanes. The ecological risks determined by the sediment quality guidelines and mean probable effect level quotients were acceptable, except at two sites.

Abstract:This study assessed pollution levels, ecological and health risks, and spatial distribution of eight heavy metals in sediments of Wadi El-Gemal Island, south Marsa Alam, Red Sea, Egypt. The analyzed metals (mg/kg) followed a decreasing order: Fe ˃ Mn ˃ Zn ˃ Co ˃ Pb > Ni ˃ Cu > Cd. Principle component analysis (PCA) of the investigated metals showed significant loadings of Mn, Ni, Fe (geogenic source) and Cd, Pb, and Zn (anthropogenic source). Twelve ecological, sediment quality guidelines (SQGs), and health risk indices were applied. Enrichment factor (EF) values in sediments showed low (Cu), minimal (Ni), moderate (Pb, Mn, and Zn), and significant enrichment (Cd and Co), while contamination factor (CF) showed low contaminated sediments (CF <1). Geo-accumulation index (I geo ) showed uncontaminated (Cd), moderately to strongly contaminated (Pb, Cu, Ni), strongly contaminated (Co), and extremely contaminated sediments (Fe, Mn, Zn). Pollution load index (PLI) and degree of contamination (DC) indicated low contamination, whereas Nemerow pollution index (NPI) showed unpolluted sediments (NPI ≤1). Potential ecological risk index (PERI) indicated low risk (PERI <150). The SQGs mean effects range median quotient (MERMQ) indicated low-priority risk level of toxicity (MERMQ ≤0.1), and toxic risk index (TRI) showed low toxic risk in the island's sediments (TRI <5). Hazard index (HI) levels for all metals indicated low chronic non-carcinogenic risks (HI <1). Total cancer risk (TCR) levels of Cd, Pb, and Ni were below U.S. EPA permissible limit (1×10 −4 ), while Cd had the highest TCR levels for children and adults.

Concentration Levels and Ecological Risks of Persistent Organic Pollutants in the Surface Sediments of Tianjin Coastal Area, China.

Abstract:Sediments were sampled from different surface water bodies in Tianjin coastal area, China, and persistent organic pollutants (POPs) including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) were measured using GC/MS or GC/ECD. The purposes were to investigate the concentration levels of the POPs and to assess their ecological risks. The results showed that all the 16 priority PAHs were detected from the 10 sediments sampled with the total concentrations of the 16 PAHs ranging from 274.06 μg/kg to 2656.65 μg/kg, while the concentrations of the halogenated POPs were generally low except in the Dagu waste discharging river where the total concentrations of 24 OCPs, 35 PCBs, and 14 PBDEs were 3103.36 μg/kg, 87.31 μg/kg, and 13.88 μg/kg, respectively. In the studied sediments, PAHs exhibited risks to benthonic organisms; particularly the concentrations of naphthalene and/or acenaphthene exceeded their probable effect concentrations in several locations. In comparison, only in the Dagu waste discharging river, OCPs exhibited risks with the concentrations of heptachlor epoxide and lindane exceeding their probable effect concentrations. Evaluation of sediment quality for heavy metal(loid)s contamination and health risk assessment in the Gulf of Suez, Egypt

Abstract:The Gulf of Suez faces challenges related to contamination, primarily due to industrial, tourism, and shipping activities along its shores. This study aims to record the distribution, concentration, and potential environmental and health risk impacts of heavy metal(loid)s (HMs) in 30 surface sediment samples collected from Ras Sidr coastline, Gulf of Suez. Various contamination and health indices were employed for this study. The average concentrations of HMs (μg/g) were ranked as follows: Fe (3472), Mn (103.3), V (10.41), As (7.94), Cr (6.00), Zn (5.31), Ni (2.94). The spatial distribution of HMs indicated an increase in Mn, Zn, As, and V levels toward the southern part of the study area, potentially linked to the proximity of manganese quarries and their metal association at Abu Zenima. Contamination indices revealed moderately severe enrichment with As, minor enrichment with Mn, and no enrichment for the remaining HMs. Multivariate analysis suggested a natural origin for Cr, Fe, Mn, Ni, Zn, and V, while As were likely anthropogenic. Values of hazard index (HI) for HMs in both adults and children followed the descending order of As > Fe > Cr > V > Mn > Ni > Zn. However, all HI values were below 1.0, indicating no significant non-carcinogenic risk for individuals along the Ras Sidr coastline. 19 samples exhibited lifetime cancer risk (LCR) values exceeding 1 × 10-4 for As in children, suggesting potential carcinogenic risks. LCR values for As in adults and Cr in adults and children ranged from 1 × 10-5 to less than 1 × 10-6, indicating acceptable or tolerable levels of carcinogenic risk and no significant threats to health.

Abstract:Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) are pesticides with global scale ubiquity, persistence and bioaccumulation, which leave long-term residuals in the water body. OCPs’ high toxicity poses significant threats to human health and aquatic biodiversity, making assessment of OCPs’ impact on aquatic ecology and human health urgently necessary. In this research, the presence of 16 OCPs in surface water and groundwater along Shaying River, China, as well as OCPs concentration correlations, was investigated at 24 selected sampling sites. At the same time, the ecological risk and human carcinogenic risk were also analyzed by risk quotient method and USEPA’s Risk Assessment Guidance, respectively. Results showed that the total concentration of OCPs ranged from 21.0 to 61.4 ng L−1 in groundwater, and 12.3–77.5 ng L−1 in surface water. Hexachlorocyclohexane (HCHs) and heptachlor were the prominent contaminants in groundwater, which indicated their use in the recent past and confirmed their persistence. The α-HCH/γ-HCH ratios in groundwater confirmed that γ-HCH (lindane) was used as main substitute of technical HCH in the study area. The correlation analysis illustrated that δ-HCH and γ-HCH played a dominant role in HCHs residue. Heptachlor and α-HCH, as well as endosulfan and heptachlor epoxide, had a strongly significant positive correlation, suggesting an associated usage of the two pair OCPs. An extremely high ecological risk for aquatic organism was observed for γ-HCH, heptachlor and dieldrin, while the carcinogenic risks posed by the selected OCPs in surface water and groundwater were all acceptable.

Abstract:In a series of 148 patients with essential hypertension, the presence of the atherosclerotic C3-F gene and HLA-antigen frequences were investigated, and the results were compared with those in 62 age and sex matched normotensive controls. The frequency of C3-F was significantly higher in patients (p less than 0.03), as was HLA-B15 in patients with a positive family history of hypertension (p less than 0.05). The presence of the C3-F gene was associated with an increased risk (= 10.2) for coronary heart disease, and B15 was associated with an increased risk (= 6.0) for cerebral events in both familial and non familial cases of hypertension. It is suggested that determination of the C3-F gene and HLA-antigens might be a tool in the identification of hypertensive patients at particular high risk for vascular events, irrespective of BP levels. The study support the suggestions that some genetic factors may act via immunological pathways.
Organochlorine pesticides in Ethiopian waters: Implications for environmental and human health

Abstract:Despite the global ban on organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) since the 1970s, their use continues in many developing countries, including Ethiopia, primarily due to the lack of viable alternatives and weak regulations. Nonetheless, the extent of contamination and the resulting environmental and health consequences in these countries remain inadequately understood. To address these knowledge gaps, we conducted a comprehensive analysis of reported concentrations (n=398) of OCPs (n=30) in distinct yet interconnected water matrices: water, sediment, and biota in Ethiopia. Our analysis revealed a notable geographical bias, with higher concentrations found in sediments (0.074-1161.2 µg/kg), followed by biota (0.024-1003 µg/kg) and water (0.001-1.85 µg/L). Moreover, DDTs, endosulfan, and hexachlorohexenes (HCHs) were among the most frequently detected OCPs in higher concentrations in Ethiopian waters. The DDT metabolite p,p'-DDE was commonly observed across all three matrices, with concentrations in water birds reaching levels up to 57 and 143,286 times higher than those found in sediment and water, respectively. The findings showed a substantial potential for DDTs and endosulfan to accumulate and biomagnify in Ethiopian waters. Furthermore, it was revealed that the consumption of fish contaminated with DDTs posed both non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks while drinking water did not pose significant risks in this regard. Importantly, the issue of OCPs in Ethiopia assumes even greater significance as their concentrations were found to be eight times higher than those of currently used pesticides (CUPs) in Ethiopian waters. Consequently, given the ongoing concerns about OCPs in Ethiopia, there is a need for ongoing monitoring, implementation of sustainable mitigation measures, and strengthening of OCP management systems in the country, as well as in other developing countries with similar settings and practices.
