Abstract:This article is devoted to developing an approach for manipulating the von Neumann entropy $S(\rho(t))$ of an open two-qubit system with coherent control and incoherent control inducing time-dependent decoherence rates. The following goals are considered: (a) minimizing or maximizing the final entropy $S(\rho(T))$; (b) steering $S(\rho(T))$ to a given target value; (c) steering $S(\rho(T))$ to a target value and satisfying the pointwise state constraint $S(\rho(t)) \leq \overline{S}$ for a given $\overline{S}$; (d) keeping $S(\rho(t))$ constant at a given time interval. Under the Markovian dynamics determined by a Gorini--Kossakowski--Sudarshan--Lindblad type master equation, which contains coherent and incoherent controls, one- and two-step gradient projection methods and genetic algorithm have been adapted, taking into account the specifics of the objective functionals. The corresponding numerical results are provided and discussed.

Abstract:We investigate the scheme for controlling information characterized by Von-Neumann entropy and the stationary state entanglement characterized by concurrence of two solid state qubits in the collective dephasing channel. It is shown that the local maximal value of the stationary state concurrence always corresponds to the local minimal value of information. We also propose a scheme for remotely controlling the entanglement of two solid state qubits against the collective dephasing. This idea may open a door to remotely suppress the detrimental effects of decoherence.

Krotov Type Optimization of Coherent and Incoherent Controls for Open Two-Qubit Systems

Abstract:This work considers two-qubit open quantum systems driven by coherent and incoherent controls. Incoherent control induces time-dependent decoherence rates via time-dependent spectral density of the environment which is used as a resource for controlling the system. The system evolves according to the Gorini-Kossakowski-Sudarshan-Lindblad master equation with time-dependent coefficients. For two types of interaction with coherent control, three types of objectives are considered: 1) maximizing the Hilbert-Schmidt overlap between the final and target density matrices; 2) minimizing the Hilbert-Schmidt distance between these matrices; 3) steering the overlap to a given value. For the first problem, we develop the Krotov type methods directly in terms of density matrices with or without regularization for piecewise continuous constrained controls and find the cases where the methods produce (either exactly or with some precision) zero controls which satisfy the Pontryagin maximum principle and produce the overlap's values close to their upper estimates. For the problems 2) and 3), we find cases when the dual annealing method steers the objectives close to zero and produces a non-zero control.

Abstract:Quantum control of an open system is demonstrated employing a thermodynamically consistent master equation. In this framework, the open system dynamics depend on the control protocol due to the dressing of the system by the drive. This interrelation serves as the key element for control. The influence of the external drive is incorporated within the dynamical equation, enabling an indirect control of the dissipation. The control paradigm is displayed by analyzing entropy changing state to state transformations, heating and cooling N-level systems. Following, we study the generation of quantum non-unitary maps via coherent control. These include both reset maps with complete memory loss and single-qubit unitary maps under dissipative conditions.

Abstract:The measurement-based feedback (MBF) control offers several powerful means for preparing the desired target quantum state. Therefore, it is important to investigate fundamental properties of MBF. In particular, how the entropy of the controlled system under the MBF behaves is of great interest. In this study, we examine this problem by deriving a sufficient condition that the time derivative of the von Neumann entropy is nonnegative under the MBF control. This result is rigorously characterized by the variance of the system observable and the quantumness of a given decoherence. We show the validity of the result and physical interpretation in the example of qubit stabilizing.

Abstract:Entropy is one of the most basic concepts in thermodynamics and statistical mechanics. The most widely used definition of statistical mechanical entropy for a quantum system is introduced by von Neumann. While in classical systems, the statistical mechanical entropy is defined by Gibbs. The relation between these two definitions of entropy is still not fully explored. In this work, we study this problem by employing the phase-space formulation of quantum mechanics. For those quantum states having well-defined classical counterparts, we study the quantum-classical correspondence and quantum corrections of the entropy. We expand the von Neumann entropy in powers of ℏ by using the phase-space formulation, and the zeroth-order term reproduces the Gibbs entropy. We also obtain the explicit expression of the quantum corrections of the entropy. Moreover, we find that for the thermodynamic equilibrium state, all terms odd in ℏ are exactly zero. As an application, we derive quantum corrections for the net work extraction during a quantum Carnot cycle. Our results bring important insights into the understanding of quantum entropy and may have potential applications in the study of quantum heat engines.

Abstract:Control of open quantum dynamics is of great interest for realizing quantum technologies. Therefore, it is an important task to quantify and characterize the entropy for open quantum systems under decoherence. In this paper, we study the time evolution of the von Neumann entropy for open quantum systems described by the Lindblad master equation. Note that, in particular, when the decoherence corresponds to the measurement for the observable in the system, the von Neumann entropy tends to monotonically increases as the variance becomes larger. Furthermore, we present a lower bound of the von Neumann entropy in the long-time limit. This lower bound has advantages of being straightforwardly calculated and applicable to a general Markovian open quantum system.

Entanglement signature in quantum work statistics in the slow-driving regime

Abstract:In slowly driven classical systems, work is a stochastic quantity and its probability distribution is known to satisfy the work fluctuation-dissipation relation, which states that the mean and variance of the dissipated work are linearly related. Recently, it was shown that generation of quantum coherence in the instantaneous energy eigenbasis leads to a correction to this linear relation in the slow-driving regime. Here, we go even further by investigating nonclassical features of work fluctuations in setups with more than one system. To do this, we first generalize slow control protocols to encompass multipartite systems, allowing for the generation of quantum correlations during the driving process. Then, focussing on two-qubit systems, we show that entanglement generation leads to a positive contribution to the dissipated work, which is distinct from the quantum correction due to local coherence generation known from previous work. Our results show that entanglement generated during slow control protocols, e.g. as an unavoidable consequence of qubit crosstalk, comes at the cost of increased dissipation.

Abstract:In this work, we consider a general form of the dynamics of open quantum systems determined by the Gorini-Kossakowsky-Sudarchhan-Lindblad type master equation with simultaneous coherent and incoherent controls with three particular forms of the two-qubit Hamiltonians. Coherent control enters in the Hamiltonian and incoherent control enters in both the Hamiltonian and the superoperator of dissipation. For these systems, we analyze the control problems of generating two-qubit C-NOT, SWAP, and C-Z gates using with piecewise constant controls and stochastic optimization in the form of an adapted version of the dual annealing algorithm. In the numerical experiment, we analyze the minimal infidelity obtained by the dual annealing for various values of strength of the interaction between the system and the environment.

Abstract:Fluctuation theorems and the second law of thermodynamics are powerful relations constraining the behavior of out-of-equilibrium systems. While there exist generalizations of these relations to feedback controlled quantum systems, their applicability is limited, in particular when considering strong and continuous measurements. In this letter, we overcome this shortcoming by deriving a novel fluctuation theorem, and the associated second law of information thermodynamics, which remain applicable in arbitrary feedback control scenarios. In our second law, the entropy production is bounded by the coarse-grained entropy production which is inferrable from the measurement outcomes, an experimentally accessible quantity that does not diverge even under strong continuous measurements. We illustrate our results by a qubit undergoing discrete and continuous measurement, where our approach provides a useful bound on the entropy production for all measurement strengths.

Abstract:The work done when a system at thermal equilibrium is externally driven by a unitary control parameter leads to irreversible entropy production. The entropy produced can be thought of as a combination of coherence generation and a population mismatch between the target equilibrium state and the actually achieved final state. We experimentally explored this out-of-equilibrium process in an NMR quantum processor and studied the contribution of coherence to irreversible entropy generation. We verified a generalized Clausius inequality, which affirms that irreversible entropy production is lower-bounded.

Abstract:The field of information scrambling has seen significant growth over the last decade, where the out-of-time-ordered correlator (OTOC) has emerged as a prominent tool to probe it. In this work, we use bipartite OTOC, a particular form of OTOC, to study information scrambling in the atom-field interaction models and the model of the Ising spin chain interacting with a tilted magnetic field. This is done considering the effects of open quantum systems. A relationship between information scrambling, using bipartite OTOC, and irreversibility, using entropy production, is probed under unitary dynamics. The equivalence of bipartite OTOC with operator entanglement is explicitly shown for the Ising model.
