Abstract:Microalgae play an important role in aquatic ecosystems, but the widespread presence of micro- and nano-plastics (MNPs) poses significant threats to them. Haematococcus pluvialis is well-known for its ability to produce the antioxidant astaxanthin when it experiences stress from environmental conditions. Here we examined the effects of polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs) at concentrations of 0.1, 1, and 10 mg/L on H. pluvialis over an 18-day period. Our results show that PS-NPs caused a significant, dose-dependent inhibition of H. pluvialis growth and a reduction in photosynthesis. Furthermore, PS-NPs severely damaged the morphology of H. pluvialis , leading to cell shrinkage, collapse, content release, and aggregation. Additionally, PS-NPs induced a dose-dependent increase in soluble protein content and a decrease in the production of extracellular polymeric substances. These findings indicate that PS-NPs has the potential to adversely affect both the physiology and morphology of H. pluvialis . An increase in reactive oxygen species and antioxidant enzyme activities was also observed, suggesting an oxidative stress response to PS-NPs exposure. Notably, the synthesis of astaxanthin, which is crucial for H. pluvialis 's survival under stress, was significantly inhibited in a dose-dependent manner under strong light conditions, along with the down-regulation of genes involved in the astaxanthin biosynthesis pathway. This suggests that PS-NPs exposure reduces H. pluvialis 's ability to survive under adverse conditions. This study enhances our understanding of the toxic effects of PS-NPs on microalgae and underscores the urgent need for measures to mitigate MNP pollution to protect aquatic ecosystems.

Abstract:Algae-induced odor problems in water have been repeatedly occurred concerns for drinking water quality. However, present researches mostly focus on the odor-producing pattern of algae in normal growth, and there is scarce discussion on those under stress. Microplastics (MPs) pollution have been global concern for their negative ecological impacts and frequently co-occurs with odor-producing algal bloom in freshwaters. Thus, this study aimed to elucidate the effects and mechanisms of MPs as an environmental stress on algal odorant production for good illustration of odor-producing response pattern under stress. Variation in MP size (polystyrene microspheres; 100 nm, 1000 nm and 10 μm) had significant effects on odorant formation (β-cycloidal, 2-methylisopropanol, 2,4-heptandienal and 2,4-decadienal) by four freshwater algae (Microcystis aeruginosa, Pseudanabaena sp., Cyclotella meneghiniana and Melosira varians). The size ratio of MPs over cells (SRMC) was proposed to categorize the size-ratio dependent effects on the algal odorant production. Interestingly, when SRMC was in the range of 0.1-1, there were always promoting effects; when SRMC < 0.1 or SRMC > 1, there exhibited inhibiting effects, and the inhibiting effects of SRMC < 0.1 were far more severe than those of SRMC > 1. The promotion on odorant production in the SRMC range of 0.1-1 was mainly attributed to the increase in cellular yield, which was related to the increased odorant precursors derived from the oxidation products of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Alternatively, the inhibition of odorant production caused by MPs with SRMC < 0.1 was the results of simultaneously inhibiting cellular density and cellular yield, which might be attributed to the cellular internalization of MPs, inducing the extensive toxic effects. This study illustrated the possibilities of MPs in impairing the esthetics of the source water and provided guidance for the future algal odor issues under stress.

Abstract:In order to evaluate the effects of polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) on the growth, physiology, and biochemical characteristics of submerged plants, we exposed a typical submerged plant, Hydrilla verticillata, to a series of concentrations (i.e. 0, 5, 10, 30, 50, 100 mg·L-1) of 3 μm polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) and measured parameters including height, biomass, chlorophyll content, antioxidant enzyme activity, photosynthetic fluorescence. The results showed that the height of H. Verticillata significantly decreased at the high PS-MP concentrations (50 to 100 mg·L-1), while the fresh weight significantly increased at the low PS-MP concentration (5 mg·L-1). The fresh weight of H. verticillata gradually decreased with the increasing PS-MP concentration but the dry weight did not change. The total amount of chlorophyll, chlorophyll a, and chlorophyll a/b significantly decreased with the increases of the PS-MP concentrations, while the chlorophyll b did not change. PS-MPs affected the antioxidant enzyme activities of H. verticillata. The activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and peroxidase (POD) were first increased and then decreased with the increasing PS-MP concentration. The chlorophyll fluorescence parameters (Fo, Fm, Fv/Fm) decreased with the increasing concentration of PS-MP and the 1-Qp-Lss value (reflective of the closing of PSⅡ reaction center) was increased under the stable state, probably due to the inhibited PSⅡ reaction center. The overall intensity of fluorescence imaging of H. verticillata decreased with the increasing concentration of PS-MPs. When the PS-MP concentration was lower than 10 mg·L-1, the photosynthetic activity of the leaves was normal. In contrast, when the PS-MP concentration was higher than 30 mg·L-1, it caused significant adverse effects on leaves, including weaker photosynthetic intensity and the presence of yellow or withered leaves. Our results suggested that H. verticillata could tolerate PS-MP pollution but its growth and photosynthesis would be inhibited at high concentrations (>30 mg·L-1). Our results provided basic information to better understand the eco-physiological effects of PS-MPs in the freshwater environment.

Abstract:Increasing marine microplastics (MPs) pollution potentially threatens the stability of phytoplankton community structures in marine environments. MPs toxicities to microalgae are largely determined by particle size, while the size-dependent mechanisms are still not fully understood. In this study, two sizes (0.1 µm and 1 µm) of polystyrene (PS) MPs were used as experimental targets to systemically compare their different effecting mechanisms on the marine model diatom Thalassiosira pseudonana with respect to oxidative stress and photosynthesis. The results indicated the toxicity of 1 µm sized MPs was higher than 0.1 µm sized MPs regarding to population growth. In condition of similar microalgal population inhibition rates, we found more enhanced cellular oxidative stress and cell death happened in the 1 µm MPs treatments, which could be linked to higher zeta potential of 1 µm MPs and more severe cell surface damage; microalgal surface light shading and cellular pigments decline were more obvious in the 0.1 µm MPs treatment, which could be linked to high aggregation abilities of 0.1 µm MPs. Gene expressions supported the morphological and physiological findings on the transcriptional level. Environmental related MPs concentrations (5 μg L-1) also aroused gene expression changes of T. pseudonana while more changing genes were found under 0.1 µm MPs than 1 µm MPs. These results provide novel insights into the size-dependent mechanisms of MPs toxicity on marine microalgae, as well as their potential influence on the marine environment.

Abstract:The occurrence of microplastics (MPs) within aquatic ecosystems attracts a major environmental concern. It was demonstrated MPs could cause various ecotoxicological effects on microalgae. However, existing data on the effects of MPs on microalgae showed great variability among studies. Here, we performed a meta-analysis of the latest studies on the effects of MPs on photosynthesis and oxidative stress in microalgae. A total of 835 biological endpoints were investigated from 55 studies extracted, and 37 % of them were significantly affected by MPs. In this study, the impact of MPs against microalgae was concentration-dependent and size-dependent, and microalgae were more susceptible to MPs stress in freshwater than marine. Additionally, we summarized the biological functions of microalgae that are primarily affected by MPs. Under MPs exposure, the content of chlorophyll a (Chl-a) was reduced and electron transfer in the photosynthetic system was hindered, causing electron accumulation and oxidative stress damage, which may also affect biological processes such as energy production, carbon fixation, lipid metabolism, and nucleic acid metabolism. Finally, our findings provide important insights into the effects of MPs stress on photosynthesis and oxidative stress in microalga and enhance the current understanding of the potential risk of MPs pollution on aquatic organisms.

Abstract:Due to the potential impacts of microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) on algal growth and thereby affect the climate-relevant substances, dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) and dimethyl sulfide (DMS), we studied the polystyrene (PS) MPs and NPs of 1 μm and 80 nm impacts on the growth, chlorophyll content, reactive oxygen species (ROS), antioxidant enzyme activity, and DMS/DMSP production in Emiliania huxleyi . E. huxleyi is a prominent oceanic alga that plays a key role in DMS and DMSP production. The results revealed that high concentrations of MPs and NPs inhibited the growth, carotenoid (Car), and Chl a concentrations of E. huxleyi . However, short-time exposure to low concentrations of PS MPs and NPs stimulated the growth of E. huxleyi . Furthermore, high concentrations of MPs and NPs resulted in an increase in the superoxide anion radical (O 2 – ) production rate and a decrease in the malondialdehyde (MDA) content compared with the low concentrations. Exposure to MPs and NPs at 5 mg L –1 induced superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity as a response to scavenging ROS. High concentrations of MPs and NPs significantly inhibited the production of DMSP and DMS. The findings of this study support the potential ecotoxicological impacts of MPs and NPs on algal growth, antioxidant system, and dimethylated sulfur compounds production, which maybe potentially impact the global climate.

Abstract:A neutral polysaccharide fraction (WGPN) prepared from Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer by hot water extraction and DEAE-cellulose chromatography was tested for its anticancer activity alone and in combination with 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) in Sarcoma-180 (S180) tumor-bearing mice by intragastric administration. WGPN alone inhibited S180 tumor growth in a bell-shaped dose-response curve, and the combination with 5-FU showed a synergistic effect. Studies of various immunological activities in S180-bearing mice revealed that WGPN stimulated the proliferation of lymphocytes, increased natural killer cell cytotoxicity, enhanced the phagocytosis and nitric oxide production by macrophages, and increased the level of tumor necrosis factor-alpha in serum. In combination with 5-FU, WGPN mitigated damage to the immune system caused by 5-FU in S180-bearing mice. These results suggest that WGPN might be a potential adjuvant for chemotherapeutic drugs.

Abstract:Microplastics (MP) widely distributed in aquatic environments have adverse effects on aquatic organisms. Currently, the impact of MP on toxigenic red tide microalgae is poorly understood. In this study, the strain of Alexandrium pacificum ATHK, typically producing paralytic shellfish toxins (PST), was selected as the target. Effects of 1 and 0.1 μm polystyrene MP with three concentration gradients (5 mg L−1, 25 mg L−1 and 100 mg L−1) on the growth, chlorophyll a (Chl a), photosynthetic activity (Fv/Fm) and PST production of ATHK were explored. Results showed that the high concentration (100 mg L−1) of 1 μm and 0.1 μm MP significantly inhibited the growth of ATHK, and the inhibition depended on the size and concentration of MP. Contents of Chl a showed an increase with various degrees after MP exposure in all cases. The photosynthesis indicator Fv/Fm of ATHK was significantly inhibited in the first 11 days, then gradually returned to the level of control group at day 13, and finally was gradually inhibited in the 1 μm MP treatments, and promotion or inhibition to some degree also occurred at different periods after exposure to 0.1 μm MP. Overall, both particle sizes of MP at 5 and 25 mg L−1 had no significant effect on cell toxin quota, and the high concentration 100 mg L−1 significantly promoted the PST biosynthesis on the day 7, 11 and 15. No significant difference occurred in the cell toxin quota and the total toxin content in all treatments at the end of the experiment (day 21). All MP treatments did not change the toxin profiles of ATHK, nor did the relative molar percentage of main PST components. The growth of ATHK, Chl a content, Fv/Fm and toxin production were not affected by MP shading. This is the first report on the effects of MP on the PST-producing microalgae, which will improve the understanding of the adverse impact of MP on the growth and toxin production of A. pacificum.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are persistent environmental contaminants. The toxic effects of MPs on aquatic organisms have raised increasing concerns, but their toxic effects on aquatic phytoplankton has not been thoroughly investigated. In the present study, the toxic effects of two sizes MPs (1 μm and 5 μm) on Chlorella pyrenoidosa at 2, 10, 50 mg/L were explored for 1, 5, 10 days. The growth ratio, photosynthetic pigments content, extracellular polymeric substances content, soluble protein content, MDA content and relative expression of genes related to photosynthesis and energy metabolism were measured. These results indicated that 1 μm MP could significantly inhibit the growth of C. pyrenoidosa. Compared with the control group, 1 μm MP significantly reduced the photosynthetic pigment content, induced oxidative stress and disrupted the cell membrane integrity of C. pyrenoidosa. At the molecular level, 1 μm MP altered the transcript levels of genes related to photosynthesis and energy metabolism. Scanning electron microscopy and fluorescent images showed that MPs aggregation with C. pyrenoidosa may be the main reason for the toxic effects of MPs. These results will provide new insight into the toxicity of different MPs on aquatic phytoplankton, and evaluate the risks caused by MPs in aquatic environments.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are a prolific contaminant in aquatic ecosystems across the globe. Zooplankton (including holoplankton and meroplankton) play vital ecological roles in marine and freshwater ecosystems and have been shown to readily consume MPs. The present review uses 88 pieces of published literature to examine and compare the effects of MPs on survival, growth, development, feeding rate, swimming speed, reproduction, organ damage and gene expression of different groups of zooplankton, including copepods, daphnids, brine shrimp, euphausids, rotifers and the larvae of fishes, sea urchins, molluscs, barnacles, decapods and ascidians. Among the groups studied, daphnids and copepods are the most sensitive to MPs, with their feeding rate and fecundity significantly decreased at environmentally relevant MP concentrations. This might adversely affect daphnid and copepod populations in the long term. In contrast, molluscs, barnacles, brine shrimp and euphausids appear to be more tolerant to MPs. No clear impacts on survival, development time, growth or feeding rate can be observed in these zooplankton groups at any of the MP concentrations tested, suggesting that these groups might become more dominant with prolonged exposure to MP pollution. Leachates derived from MPs can induce severe abnormality in bivalve and sea urchin embryos. MPs have prominent effects on survival and fecundity of F1 offspring in bivalves, copepods and daphnids, indicating that MPs could incite transgenerational effects and drastically affect sustainability in zooplankton populations. Impacts of microplastic and seawater acidification on unicellular red algae: Growth response, photosynthesis, antioxidant enzymes, and extracellular polymer substances

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) pollution and seawater acidification have increasingly become huge threats to the ocean ecosystem. Their impacts on microalgae are of great importance, since microalgae are the main primary producers and play a critical role in marine ecosystems. However, the impact of microplastics and acidification on unicellular red algae, which have a unique phycobiliprotein antenna system, remains unclear. Therefore, the impacts of polystyrene-MPs alone and the combined effects of MPs and seawater acidification on the typical unicellular marine red algae Porphyridium purpureum were investigated in the current study. The result showed that, under normal seawater condition, microalgae densities were increased by 17.75-41.67 % compared to the control when microalgae were exposed to small-sized MPs (0.1 μm) at concentrations of 5-100 mg L-1. In addition, the photosystem II and antioxidant enzyme system were not subjected to negative effects. The large-sized MPs (1 μm) boosted microalgae growth at a low concentration of MPs (5 mg L-1). However, it was observed that microalgae growth was significantly inhibited when MPs concentration increased up to 50 and 100 mg L-1, accompanied by the remarkably reduced Fv/Fm value and the elevated levels of SOD, CAT enzymes, phycoerythrin (PE), and extracellular polysaccharide (EPS). Compared to the normal seawater condition, microalgae densities were enhanced by 52.11-332.56 % under seawater acidification, depending on MPs sizes and concentrations, due to the formed CO2-enrichment condition and appropriate pH range. PE content in microalgal cells was significantly enhanced, but SOD and CAT activities as well as EPS content markedly decreased under acidification conditions. Overall, the impacts of seawater acidification were more pronounced than MPs impacts on microalgae growth and physiological responses. These findings will contribute to a substantial understanding of the effects of MPs on marine unicellular red microalgae, especially in future seawater acidification scenarios.
Metabolic impacts of polystyrene microplastics on the freshwater microalga Microcystis aeruginosa

Abstract:Microplastics (plastic particles < 5 mm; MPs) are ubiquitous in aquatic environments but their potential adverse ecological effects on biota remain poorly understood. This is in part because in typical ecotoxicology tests the toxic effects of MPs were found to be limited. To capture the potential find-scale effects of MPs on freshwater organisms, we employed ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry based untargeted metabolomics to investigate the metabolic impact of polystyrene microbeads microplastics (PS-MPs) of different sizes (0.1, 1, 10, 100 μm) and concentrations (1, 10, 100 mg/L) on a common freshwater microalga, Microcystis aeruginosa , after a 96-h exposure test. The phenotype-based results illustrated that while PS-MPs had no discernible effects on microalgal growth and photosynthesis, both oxidative stress and microcystin production were slightly increased. Metabolomics analysis revealed that the PS-MPs altered the global metabolic profile of the microalga. Specially, PS-MPs of larger size and higher concentration induced a larger number of differentially expressed metabolites. The PS-MPs significantly disturbed metabolisms involved in amino acid synthesis, membrane formation, nitrogen storage, and antioxidant defense of the microalga, consistent with the phenotypic observations. These results suggested several perturbed metabolic pathways, especially arginine-related pathways, as the mechanism. Our study showed that the insights provided by metabolomics-based approaches can enhance assessments of the ecological impacts of MPs on freshwater organisms.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) have aroused widespread concern due to their extensive distribution in aquatic environments and adverse effects on aquatic organisms. However, the underlying toxicity of different kinds of MPs on freshwater microalgae has not been examined in detail. In this study, we investigated the effects of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polystyrene (PS) and polyethylene (PE) MPs on the growth of Microcystis aeruginosa, as well as on its toxin production and oxidative stress. We found that all three kinds of MPs had an obvious inhibition effect on the growth of M. aeruginosa. Considering the results of antioxidant-related indicators, the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT), and cell membrane integrity were greatly affected with exposure to PVC, PS and PE MPs. Moreover, the content of intracellular (intra-) and extracellular (extra-) microcystins (MCs) had a noticeable increase due to the presence of PVC, PS, and PE MPs. Finally, according to the comprehensive stress resistance indicators, the resistance of M. aeruginosa to three MPs followed the order: PE (3.701)> PS (3.607)> PVC (2.901). Our results provide insights into the effects of different kinds of MPs on freshwater algae and provide valuable data for risk assessment of different types of MPs.

Abstract:Microplastics(MPs) as pollutants can have adverse effects on aquatic ecosystems; however, their effects on the full life history of microalgae need to be further explored and thoroughly examined. In this study, we investigated influence of polystyrene(PS) plastics with different concentrations (10/50/100 mg/L) and particle sizes (0.1/0.5/1 μm) on the full life history of Chlorella ; their potential ecological risks were also analyzed. The results showed that PS (0.1um) had the strongest inhibitory effect on Chlorella growth (Max (inhibition) 68.42%), PS can not only promote (Max (promotion) 55.48% and 35.86%) but also prolong cell growth; PS has various effects on photosynthetic efficiency of Chlorella . PS (0.1um) can significantly promote F v /F m , inhibit RC/AB , F 0 /F v , DIo/RC , and both inhibit and promote rETRma , but effect of PS (0.5/1μm) is generally consistent with that of control group; PS affects the morphological structure and interaction of Chlorella significantly, and can squeeze and aggregate cells. Zeta potential fluctuated greatly in the initial stage of experiment, and was stable as Relative conductivity in the later stage. About 65.5% of PS (0.1um) can enter cell, which has potential risk of entering the food chain; Statistics on long and short-term impacts showed significant differences in growth and photosynthesis efficiencies, as well as in interactions; the potential environmental risk index (PERI) indicates that class II (slightly polluted) has the highest percentage(64.72%), and that the concentration and composition of MPs are important influences on potential environmental risk. Overall, the long-term impacts of PS were diverse, but Chlorella also showed good resilience. Meanwhile, we found that most of the previous short-term studies may be one-sided and incomplete, the real impacts of MPS may be overestimated. Our research could provide scientific support for assessing the risks posed by MPs.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are abundantly present in aquatic environments, where the phytoplankton-microalgae, are now inevitably bound to a long-term coexistence with them. While numerous studies have focused on the toxicological effects of high-concentration MPs exposure, there remains controversy over whether and how MPs affect microalgae at environmentally relevant concentrations. This study aims to draw conclusions that narrow the gap from 52 studies with varying results. Overall, MPs can inhibit growth and photosynthesis, induce oxidative damage, from which microalgae can recover after an appropriate period. Cyanobacteria exhibit greater vulnerability than chlorophyta. The relative size of MPs to algal cells potentially governs their coexistence behavior, thereby altering the mechanisms of impact. Pristine MPs may increase the production of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and microcystins (MCs), while aged MPs have the opposite effect. Additionally, relevant factors are systematically discussed, offering insights for future research.
Adverse Physiological and Molecular Level Effects of Polystyrene Microplastics on Freshwater Microalgae.

Abstract:Microplastics have aroused widespread concern because of their adverse effects on aquatic organisms. However, the underlying toxicity mechanisms have not been examined in detail. This study investigated the interactions between polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) and the model freshwater microalgae Euglena gracilis. The results of transmission electron microscopy showed that the vacuoles of microalgae were induced after 24 h exposure to 1 mg/L PS-MPs (5 μm and 0.1 μm). Furthermore, PS-MPs significantly (p < 0.05) reduced pigment contents. Moreover, superoxide dismutase activities were significantly (p < 0.05) induced in all PS-MPs treated groups. Peroxidase activities were also significantly (p < 0.05) affected by two sizes of PS-MPs (5 μm and 0.1 μm), indicating that oxidative stress was induced after exposure to PS-MPs. At the molecular level, PS-MPs dysregulated the expression of genes involved in cellular processes, genetic information processing, organismal systems, and metabolisms. The KCS gene and the CTR1 gene may be key pathways to induce adverse effects on the E. gracilis after exposure to 5 μm PS-MPs. These findings will help to elucidate the underlying molecular mechanism of microplastics toxicity on freshwater organisms.
Metabolic Impacts of Microplastics on a Freshwater Microalga

Abstract:Microplastics (plastic particles <5 mm; MPs) are ubiquitous in aquatic environments, and their ability to bind toxic chemicals has raised concern regarding their potentially adverse effects on ecosystems. However, the ecological impact of the MPs for aquatic organisms remains poorly understood because MPs usually pose limited toxic effects, which challenges the typical ecotoxicology tests. In this study, untargeted metabolomics was applied to determine the metabolic impact of MPs on a common freshwater microalga Microcystis aeruginosa after a 96-h exposure to polystyrene microbeads at combinations of different sizes and concentrations. Physiological parameters of the microalga were also determined. The results showed that MPs had no discernible effect on microalgal growth and photosynthesis, whereas oxidative stress and toxin production were slightly induced. The metabolomics analysis revealed variations in the global metabolic profile of microalgal cells exposed to MPs. Specially, we found that the larger rather than nano-sized MPs induced more differentially expressed metabolites. Metabolic pathway analysis reveals that the MPs disturb concrete metabolic pathways involved in amino acid synthesis, membrane formation, nitrogen storage, and antioxidant defense of the microalga. These observed metabolic impacts were probably related to the contact mode and contact probability between the microalgae and MPs. Our study suggests that omics-based approaches may provide insight and complement in quantifying MPs’ ecological impacts on the freshwater ecosystem.

Abstract:This study investigated the impacts of polyethylene microplastics (PE-MPs) with varying particle sizes (13 μm and 6.5 μm) on the growth and antioxidant responses of two freshwater algae species, Oscillatoria princeps ( O. princeps ) and Chlorella pyrenoidosa ( C. pyrenoidosa ). The results revealed a significant reduction in chlorophyll a content in both algal species upon exposure to PE-MPs, indicating a disruption of photosynthesis. Furthermore, Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) activity decreased in O. princeps , while Catalase (CAT) activity increased in both species, indicating complex physiological responses to microplastic stress. Notably, phycotoxin levels in O. princeps decreased with PE-MP exposure, while those in C. pyrenoidosa increased, particularly with 6.5 μm PE-MPs. These findings underscore the potential toxic effects of PE-MPs on freshwater algal growth and metabolism, as well as their influence on toxin production. This study contributes valuable insights into the ecotoxicological impacts of microplastics in freshwater environments, highlighting the need for further research on their biological effects and environmental health implications.

Abstract:Recently, the pollution of microplastics (MPs) in the global freshwater environment has become increasingly problematic, but there are few studies on the freshwater environment risks of MPs. The present study, therefore, has investigated the single and combined effects of MPs and lead (Pb) on the freshwater algal Microcystis aeruginosa. Results showed that Pb-only (>0.05 mg·L−1) promoted the growth of algal cells, while MPs-only (1 mg L−1) resulted in growth inhibition. However, compared with the corresponding concentration of Pb-only groups, the growth of algal cells was promoted in MPs + Pb treatments. MPs-only and Pb-only (0.5 mg L−1) both reduced the content of photosynthetic pigments and affected algal photosynthesis. The MPs-only treatment and MPs + Pb2+ (no pretreatment, 0.5 mg L−1 Pb2+) treatments showed significant cell aggregation. At the same time, MPs-only caused a significant increase in bound extracellular polysaccharides (bEPS), while 0.5 mg L−1 Pb reduced bEPS. Furthermore, under high Pb stress (0.5 mg L−1), the effects of combined MPs and Pb on chlorophyll content, antioxidant enzyme activity (peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT)), and damage to algal cells were less compared to individual effects, and the combination of MPs and Pb had a synergistic effect on promoting aggregations of M. aeruginosa. These results demonstrate that single and combined effects of MPs and Pb can induce differential responses in the freshwater algal M. aeruginosa, which can have a significant impact on aquatic ecosystems.
