Abstract:Algae-induced odor problems in water have been repeatedly occurred concerns for drinking water quality. However, present researches mostly focus on the odor-producing pattern of algae in normal growth, and there is scarce discussion on those under stress. Microplastics (MPs) pollution have been global concern for their negative ecological impacts and frequently co-occurs with odor-producing algal bloom in freshwaters. Thus, this study aimed to elucidate the effects and mechanisms of MPs as an environmental stress on algal odorant production for good illustration of odor-producing response pattern under stress. Variation in MP size (polystyrene microspheres; 100 nm, 1000 nm and 10 μm) had significant effects on odorant formation (β-cycloidal, 2-methylisopropanol, 2,4-heptandienal and 2,4-decadienal) by four freshwater algae (Microcystis aeruginosa, Pseudanabaena sp., Cyclotella meneghiniana and Melosira varians). The size ratio of MPs over cells (SRMC) was proposed to categorize the size-ratio dependent effects on the algal odorant production. Interestingly, when SRMC was in the range of 0.1-1, there were always promoting effects; when SRMC < 0.1 or SRMC > 1, there exhibited inhibiting effects, and the inhibiting effects of SRMC < 0.1 were far more severe than those of SRMC > 1. The promotion on odorant production in the SRMC range of 0.1-1 was mainly attributed to the increase in cellular yield, which was related to the increased odorant precursors derived from the oxidation products of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Alternatively, the inhibition of odorant production caused by MPs with SRMC < 0.1 was the results of simultaneously inhibiting cellular density and cellular yield, which might be attributed to the cellular internalization of MPs, inducing the extensive toxic effects. This study illustrated the possibilities of MPs in impairing the esthetics of the source water and provided guidance for the future algal odor issues under stress.
Exploring the Trophic Transfer and Effects of Microplastics in Freshwater Ecosystems: A Focus on Bellamya Aeruginosa to Mylopharyngodon Piceus

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) can enter aquatic food webs through direct ingestion from the environment or indirectly via trophic transfer, but their fate and biological effects within local freshwater food chains remain largely unexplored. In this study, we conducted the first investigation on the trophic transfer and impacts of fluorescently labeled polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) (100-nm and 10-μm) in a model freshwater food chain consisting of the snail Bellamya aeruginosa and the commercially important fish Mylopharyngodon piceus, both prevalent in Chinese freshwater ecosystems. Quantitative analysis revealed substantial accumulation of MPs in B. aeruginosa, reaching an equilibrium state within 12 h of exposure. While steady-state was not observed, a pronounced time-dependent bioaccumulation of MPs was evident in M. piceus over a five-week period following dietary exposure through the consumption of contaminated B. aeruginosa. Notably, MPs of both sizes underwent translocation from the gastrointestinal tract to the muscle tissue in M. piceus. High-throughput sequencing of the gut microbiota revealed that exposure to 100-nm MPs significantly altered the microbial community composition in M. piceus, and both particle sizes led to increased relative abundance of potentially pathogenic bacterial genera. Our findings provide novel insights into the trophic transfer, tissue accumulation, and biological impacts of MPs in a model freshwater food chain, highlighting the need for further research to assess the ecological and food safety risks associated with microplastic pollution in freshwater environments.
Changes of the physicochemical properties of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) from Microcystis aeruginosa in response to microplastics

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are ubiquitous in aquatic ecosystems and can significantly influence the growth, aggregation and functions of phytoplankton biomass. However, variations in the extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) of phytoplankton in terms of compositions and structures in response to MPs were still not reported. In this study, EPS matrix of Microsystis aeruginosa was applied and fractionated into loosely bound EPS (LB-EPS) and tightly bound EPS (TB-EPS) fractions, with the time-dependent changes in response to different concentrations (10, 100 and 500 mg/L) of MPs being explored via using the fluorescence excitation emission matrix coupled with parallel factor (EEM-PARAFAC) and two-dimensional Fourier transform infrared correlation spectroscopy (2D-FTIR-COS) analysis. Results showed that 500 mg/L of MP concentration significantly inhibited Microcystis growth by 30.5% but enhanced EPS secretion. In addition, organic composition in LB-EPS and TB-EPS varied differently in response to increased MP exposure, as the ratio of polysaccharide/protein increased in the TB-EPS but decreased in LB-EPS. Further analysis revealed obvious heterogeneities in organic component variations in response to MPs, as the C–O functional groups and glycosidic bonds in the TB-EPS preferentially responded, which lead to the domination of polysaccharides and humus substances; while the carbonyl, carboxyl and amino functional groups in the LB-EPS exhibited a preferential response, which caused the enhanced percentage of the tryptophan-like proteins. In addition to organic compositions, the aromaticity, hydrophobicity and humification in the LB-EPS fraction increased with enhanced MP exposure, which, as a result, may influence the ecotoxicological risk of MPs. Therefore, Microcystis can dynamically adjust not only the EPS contents but also the compositions in response to MPs exposure. The results can improve our understanding on the eco-physiological impact of phytoplankton-MP interaction in aquatic environment, and indicate that the dose-dependent and long-term effects of MPs on phytoplankton should be considered in future study.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are persistent environmental contaminants. The toxic effects of MPs on aquatic organisms have raised increasing concerns, but their toxic effects on aquatic phytoplankton has not been thoroughly investigated. In the present study, the toxic effects of two sizes MPs (1 μm and 5 μm) on Chlorella pyrenoidosa at 2, 10, 50 mg/L were explored for 1, 5, 10 days. The growth ratio, photosynthetic pigments content, extracellular polymeric substances content, soluble protein content, MDA content and relative expression of genes related to photosynthesis and energy metabolism were measured. These results indicated that 1 μm MP could significantly inhibit the growth of C. pyrenoidosa. Compared with the control group, 1 μm MP significantly reduced the photosynthetic pigment content, induced oxidative stress and disrupted the cell membrane integrity of C. pyrenoidosa. At the molecular level, 1 μm MP altered the transcript levels of genes related to photosynthesis and energy metabolism. Scanning electron microscopy and fluorescent images showed that MPs aggregation with C. pyrenoidosa may be the main reason for the toxic effects of MPs. These results will provide new insight into the toxicity of different MPs on aquatic phytoplankton, and evaluate the risks caused by MPs in aquatic environments.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) have aroused widespread concern due to their extensive distribution in aquatic environments and adverse effects on aquatic organisms. However, the underlying toxicity of different kinds of MPs on freshwater microalgae has not been examined in detail. In this study, we investigated the effects of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polystyrene (PS) and polyethylene (PE) MPs on the growth of Microcystis aeruginosa, as well as on its toxin production and oxidative stress. We found that all three kinds of MPs had an obvious inhibition effect on the growth of M. aeruginosa. Considering the results of antioxidant-related indicators, the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT), and cell membrane integrity were greatly affected with exposure to PVC, PS and PE MPs. Moreover, the content of intracellular (intra-) and extracellular (extra-) microcystins (MCs) had a noticeable increase due to the presence of PVC, PS, and PE MPs. Finally, according to the comprehensive stress resistance indicators, the resistance of M. aeruginosa to three MPs followed the order: PE (3.701)> PS (3.607)> PVC (2.901). Our results provide insights into the effects of different kinds of MPs on freshwater algae and provide valuable data for risk assessment of different types of MPs.
Metabolic impacts of polystyrene microplastics on the freshwater microalga Microcystis aeruginosa

Abstract:Microplastics (plastic particles < 5 mm; MPs) are ubiquitous in aquatic environments but their potential adverse ecological effects on biota remain poorly understood. This is in part because in typical ecotoxicology tests the toxic effects of MPs were found to be limited. To capture the potential find-scale effects of MPs on freshwater organisms, we employed ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry based untargeted metabolomics to investigate the metabolic impact of polystyrene microbeads microplastics (PS-MPs) of different sizes (0.1, 1, 10, 100 μm) and concentrations (1, 10, 100 mg/L) on a common freshwater microalga, Microcystis aeruginosa , after a 96-h exposure test. The phenotype-based results illustrated that while PS-MPs had no discernible effects on microalgal growth and photosynthesis, both oxidative stress and microcystin production were slightly increased. Metabolomics analysis revealed that the PS-MPs altered the global metabolic profile of the microalga. Specially, PS-MPs of larger size and higher concentration induced a larger number of differentially expressed metabolites. The PS-MPs significantly disturbed metabolisms involved in amino acid synthesis, membrane formation, nitrogen storage, and antioxidant defense of the microalga, consistent with the phenotypic observations. These results suggested several perturbed metabolic pathways, especially arginine-related pathways, as the mechanism. Our study showed that the insights provided by metabolomics-based approaches can enhance assessments of the ecological impacts of MPs on freshwater organisms.

Size-dependent Toxic Effects of Polystyrene Microplastic Exposure on Microcystis Aeruginosa Growth and Microcystin Production

Abstract:Due to increasingly severe microplastic pollution in freshwaters, the interaction between these contaminants and cyanobacteria warrants study. In this study, we expose the freshwater cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa to different sizes (1 μm and 100 nm) of polystyrene (PS) microplastics of 5 mg/L. Results indicate 1 μm microplastics promote algal growth (12.42% ± 0.94%) at 96 h, and have greater potential to aggregate on algal cell surfaces and inhibit photosynthesis. But no significance was observed in 100 nm microplastics treatment on algal growth and photosynthetic activity after 96 h exposure. Especially, 1 μm microplastics increased the content of intracellular microcystins (MCs) (18.42% ±0.33%) after 72 h and inhibit MCs release (23.87% ±8.79%) at 72 h, while 100 nm PS microplastics promote MCs production only at 48 h (14.83% ± 7.07%). Results indicate that smaller size does not necessarily mean greater toxicity, 1 μm microplastics showing more adverse effects than 100 nm microplastics to M. aeruginosa, improving understanding of the toxicity of microplastics in freshwater ecosystems, and challenging the conventionally held belief that smaller microplastics are more toxic.

Abstract:Increasing marine microplastics (MPs) pollution potentially threatens the stability of phytoplankton community structures in marine environments. MPs toxicities to microalgae are largely determined by particle size, while the size-dependent mechanisms are still not fully understood. In this study, two sizes (0.1 µm and 1 µm) of polystyrene (PS) MPs were used as experimental targets to systemically compare their different effecting mechanisms on the marine model diatom Thalassiosira pseudonana with respect to oxidative stress and photosynthesis. The results indicated the toxicity of 1 µm sized MPs was higher than 0.1 µm sized MPs regarding to population growth. In condition of similar microalgal population inhibition rates, we found more enhanced cellular oxidative stress and cell death happened in the 1 µm MPs treatments, which could be linked to higher zeta potential of 1 µm MPs and more severe cell surface damage; microalgal surface light shading and cellular pigments decline were more obvious in the 0.1 µm MPs treatment, which could be linked to high aggregation abilities of 0.1 µm MPs. Gene expressions supported the morphological and physiological findings on the transcriptional level. Environmental related MPs concentrations (5 μg L<sup>-1</sup>) also aroused gene expression changes of T. pseudonana while more changing genes were found under 0.1 µm MPs than 1 µm MPs. These results provide novel insights into the size-dependent mechanisms of MPs toxicity on marine microalgae, as well as their potential influence on the marine environment.

Abstract:Luteolin has shown great potential in inhibiting Microcystis -dominated cyanobacterial blooms (MCBs). However, widespread microplastics (MPs) in natural aquatic systems can serve as substrates for cyanobacterial growth, potentially impacting their resistance to external stress and might interfere with luteolin's algicidal effect. This study investigated the impact of virgin and diversely-aged polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) on the inhibitory effect of luteolin involving Microcystis growth and microcystins (MCs) content in water. Moreover, the underlying mechanism was also revealed by jointly analyzing the SEM images, oxidative stress, exopolymeric substances (EPSs) content and functional gene expression. Result suggested that 0.5, 5 and 50 mg/L virgin and diversely-aged PS-MPs almost reduced growth inhibition ratio and oxidative damage of Microcysits by both doses of luteolin by stimulating EPSs secretion and inducing cell self-aggregate or hetero-aggregate with PS-MPs. Compared to virgin PS-MPs, photo-aged PS-MPs possessed rougher flaky surfaces, and hydrothermal-aging cracks the MPs internally, which were more conducive to interacting and hetero-aggregating with cells, and exhibiting more significant protective effects to Microcystis . However, MPs further reduced MCs content in water, possibly attributed to their adsorption effect on MCs, compared to luteolin stress alone. Such toxic hetero-aggregate formed by MCs, MPs, and Microcystis cells are more likely to be consumed, thus entering the food chain and triggering toxic bioaccumulation, posing greater eco-risks. This is the first study to clarify the impact and mechanisms of virgin and diversely-aged MPs on allelopathic algicidal effects from the perspective of microalgal inherent detoxifying abilities and self-protective strategies.

Abstract:Microplastics(MPs) as pollutants can have adverse effects on aquatic ecosystems; however, their effects on the full life history of microalgae need to be further explored and thoroughly examined. In this study, we investigated influence of polystyrene(PS) plastics with different concentrations (10/50/100 mg/L) and particle sizes (0.1/0.5/1 μm) on the full life history of Chlorella ; their potential ecological risks were also analyzed. The results showed that PS (0.1um) had the strongest inhibitory effect on Chlorella growth (Max (inhibition) 68.42%), PS can not only promote (Max (promotion) 55.48% and 35.86%) but also prolong cell growth; PS has various effects on photosynthetic efficiency of Chlorella . PS (0.1um) can significantly promote F v /F m , inhibit RC/AB , F 0 /F v , DIo/RC , and both inhibit and promote rETRma , but effect of PS (0.5/1μm) is generally consistent with that of control group; PS affects the morphological structure and interaction of Chlorella significantly, and can squeeze and aggregate cells. Zeta potential fluctuated greatly in the initial stage of experiment, and was stable as Relative conductivity in the later stage. About 65.5% of PS (0.1um) can enter cell, which has potential risk of entering the food chain; Statistics on long and short-term impacts showed significant differences in growth and photosynthesis efficiencies, as well as in interactions; the potential environmental risk index (PERI) indicates that class II (slightly polluted) has the highest percentage(64.72%), and that the concentration and composition of MPs are important influences on potential environmental risk. Overall, the long-term impacts of PS were diverse, but Chlorella also showed good resilience. Meanwhile, we found that most of the previous short-term studies may be one-sided and incomplete, the real impacts of MPS may be overestimated. Our research could provide scientific support for assessing the risks posed by MPs.

Enhancing aggregation of microalgae on polystyrene microplastics by high light: Processes, drivers, and environmental risk assessment

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are emerging pollutants, causing potential threats to aquatic ecosystems and serious concern in aggregating with microalgae (critical primary producers). When entering water bodies, MPs are expected to sink below the water surface and disperse into varying water compartments with different light intensities. However, how light influences the aggregation processes of algal cells onto MPs and the associated molecular coupling mechanisms and derivative risks remain poorly understood. Herein, we investigated the aggregation behavior between polystyrene microplastics (mPS, 10 µm) and Chlorella pyrenoidosa under low (LL, 15 μmol·m-2·s-1), normal (NL, 55 μmol·m-2·s-1), and high light (HL, 150 μmol·m-2·s-1) conditions from integrated in vivo and in silico assays. The results indicated that under LL, the mPS particles primarily existed independently, whereas under NL and HL, C. pyrenoidosa tightly bounded to mPS by secreting more protein-rich extracellular polymeric substances. Infrared spectroscopy analysis and density functional theory calculation revealed that the aggregation formation was driven by non-covalent interaction involving van der Waals force and hydrogen bond. These processes subsequently enhanced the deposition and adherence capacity of mPS and relieved its phytotoxicity. Overall, our findings advance the practical and theoretical understanding of the ecological impacts of MPs in complex aquatic environments.

However, the ecological impact of the MPs for aquatic organisms remains poorly understood because MPs usually pose limited toxic effects, which challenges the typical ecotoxicology tests. In this study, untargeted metabolomics was applied to determine the metabolic impact of MPs on a common freshwater microalga Microcystis aeruginosa after a 96-h exposure to polystyrene microbeads at combinations of different sizes and concentrations. Physiological parameters of the microalga were also determined. The results showed that MPs had no discernible effect on microalgal growth and photosynthesis, whereas oxidative stress and toxin production were slightly induced. The metabolomics analysis revealed variations in the global metabolic profile of microalgal cells exposed to MPs. Specially, we found that the larger rather than nano-sized MPs induced more differentially expressed metabolites. Metabolic pathway analysis reveals that the MPs disturb concrete metabolic pathways involved in amino acid synthesis, membrane formation, nitrogen storage, and antioxidant defense of the microalga. These observed metabolic impacts were probably related to the contact mode and contact probability between the microalgae and MPs. Our study suggests that omics-based approaches may provide insight and complement in quantifying MPs’ ecological impacts on the freshwater ecosystem.
Proteomic insights into composition-dependent effects of microplastics on freshwater microalgae Chlamydomonas reinhardtii

Abstract:The widespread presence of microplastics (MPs) in freshwater systems has raised concerns about their potential ecotoxicity to aquatic organisms. In this study, we evaluated the effects of four MPs with different compositions, namely polyethylene (PE), polystyrene (PS), polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polypropylene (PP), on freshwater microalgae Chlamydomonas reinhardtii . PS and PVC MPs caused greater growth inhibition and stronger oxidative stress responses than PP and PE MPs. Proteomics analysis was employed to explore the mechanical understanding of the composition-dependent toxicity of MPs to microalgae. Proteins involved in photosynthesis processes were identified as contributors to the diverse responses of microalgae to differently composed MPs. The photosynthesis activity of algae, including the pigment content and photoprotective response, was determined to reflect the distinct effect of the four MPs. The indicated down-regulated expression of photosynthetic proteins by proteomics analysis was further confirmed using a western blot assay, with PVC and PS showing greater impacts on their expression reduction. Our findings not only show the composition-dependent effect of MPs on microalgae but also provide important insights into the molecular mechanism of MPs' toxicity to natural phytoplankton species.

Impacts of microplastic and seawater acidification on unicellular red algae: Growth response, photosynthesis, antioxidant enzymes, and extracellular polymer substances

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) pollution and seawater acidification have increasingly become huge threats to the ocean ecosystem. Their impacts on microalgae are of great importance, since microalgae are the main primary producers and play a critical role in marine ecosystems. However, the impact of microplastics and acidification on unicellular red algae, which have a unique phycobiliprotein antenna system, remains unclear. Therefore, the impacts of polystyrene-MPs alone and the combined effects of MPs and seawater acidification on the typical unicellular marine red algae Porphyridium purpureum were investigated in the current study. The result showed that, under normal seawater condition, microalgae densities were increased by 17.75-41.67 % compared to the control when microalgae were exposed to small-sized MPs (0.1 μm) at concentrations of 5-100 mg L-1. In addition, the photosystem II and antioxidant enzyme system were not subjected to negative effects. The large-sized MPs (1 μm) boosted microalgae growth at a low concentration of MPs (5 mg L-1). However, it was observed that microalgae growth was significantly inhibited when MPs concentration increased up to 50 and 100 mg L-1, accompanied by the remarkably reduced Fv/Fm value and the elevated levels of SOD, CAT enzymes, phycoerythrin (PE), and extracellular polysaccharide (EPS). Compared to the normal seawater condition, microalgae densities were enhanced by 52.11-332.56 % under seawater acidification, depending on MPs sizes and concentrations, due to the formed CO2-enrichment condition and appropriate pH range. PE content in microalgal cells was significantly enhanced, but SOD and CAT activities as well as EPS content markedly decreased under acidification conditions. Overall, the impacts of seawater acidification were more pronounced than MPs impacts on microalgae growth and physiological responses. These findings will contribute to a substantial understanding of the effects of MPs on marine unicellular red microalgae, especially in future seawater acidification scenarios.
Dynamic T1‐weighted monitoring of vascularization in human carcinoma heterotransplants by magnetic resonance imaging

Abstract:Studies on tumor angiogenesis and antiangiogenic therapies are commonly performed with tumor heterotransplants in nude mice. To monitor therapeutic effects, improved noninvasive analyses of functional data are required, in addition to the assessment of tumor volume and histology. Here, we report on sequential monitoring of vascularization of human squamous cell carcinomas growing as heterotransplants in nude mice using MRI. Using a custom‐developed animal coil in a conventional whole‐body 1.5 T MRI scanner, dynamic T1w sequences were recorded after i.v. injection of Gd‐DTPA in tumors grown for 17, 21, 25, 29 and 33 days. Amplitude and the exchange rate constant (kep) were calculated according to a 2‐compartment model, discriminating intravascular and interstitial spaces, and correlated with tumor size and histology. High‐resolution imaging of small heterotransplants from 100 to 1,000 mm3 was achieved, clearly discriminating vital and necrotic areas. Preceding the development of necroses, which were hyperintense in T2w images and confirmed with histology, a local decrease of amplitude and kep values was observed. Significantly higher amplitudes were found in tumor periphery than in central parts, correlating well with the vascular pattern obtained by immunocytochemistry. Tumor size correlated negatively with amplitude, probably as a result of increasing necrotic areas, whereas the reason for the observed increase of kep value with tumor size remains unclear. These data demonstrate that dynamic MRI is an excellent method for noninvasive assessment of tumor vascularization in small animals using a clinical whole‐body scanner with little technical modifications. This technique provides functional data characterizing essential features of tumor biology and is thus appropriate for monitoring antiangiogenic therapies. © 2002 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) and nonylphenol (NP) are typical pollutants that are frequently detected in aquatic environments and can pose a risk to aquatic organisms. However, the responses of algae, the producers in aquatic ecosystems, to MP and NP co-exposure have not been extensively investigated. In this study, polystyrene (PS, 50 mg/L) was selected as a representative MP to evaluate its short-term effects on algae treated with NP (4 mg/L). The results showed that PS mitigated the toxicity of NP to algae after 96 h of exposure, as illustrated by the higher cell densities and pigment concentrations, as well as lower extracellular protein contents and better integrity of intracellular structures, in algae subjected to PS + NP treatment compared with those subjected to NP treatment. Moreover, the upregulated expression of genes involved in photosynthesis and downregulated expression of ribosomal genes as well as genes encoding ATPase and antioxidase, analyzed through RNA-sequencing analysis, further indicated the potential repair and defense mechanisms of PS in NP-treated algae.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs), as an emergent pollutant, are causing global attention in terms of water pollution, which poses a great detriment to aquatic organisms, like algae, fish and shellfish. This study aimed to investigate the toxicity of MPs of different particle sizes to microalgae with different cell diameters. Here, we conducted a microcosm batch experiment to investigate the toxicity of four particle sizes (0.2 μm, 0.5 μm, 1 μm and 5 μm) of polystyrene MPs (PS-MPs) to 12 species of microalgae. Our results found that PS-MPs of 0.5 and 1 μm had the highest inhibition rate on the microalgae. By classifying 12 species of microalgae into small, medium and large particles sizes, the inhibition of PS-MPs on algal growth gradually increased with larger cells, indicating that they were more susceptible to inhibition. The inhibition rate of PS-MPs on three phyla was Chlorophyta < Cyanobacteria < Bacillariophyta. The contents of reactive oxygen species and malondialdehyde in microalgae cells increased under PS-MPs exposure, suggesting that PS-MPs caused damage to the antioxidant system of microalgae. Together, these findings identified that the toxicity of MPs to microalgae was correlated with the relative size of each other, contributing to evaluate the risk of MPs for aquatic ecosystems. Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are abundantly present in aquatic environments, where the phytoplankton-microalgae, are now inevitably bound to a long-term coexistence with them. While numerous studies have focused on the toxicological effects of high-concentration MPs exposure, there remains controversy over whether and how MPs affect microalgae at environmentally relevant concentrations. This study aims to draw conclusions that narrow the gap from 52 studies with varying results. Overall, MPs can inhibit growth and photosynthesis, induce oxidative damage, from which microalgae can recover after an appropriate period. Cyanobacteria exhibit greater vulnerability than chlorophyta. The relative size of MPs to algal cells potentially governs their coexistence behavior, thereby altering the mechanisms of impact. Pristine MPs may increase the production of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and microcystins (MCs), while aged MPs have the opposite effect. Additionally, relevant factors are systematically discussed, offering insights for future research.

Abstract:This study investigated the impacts of polyethylene microplastics (PE-MPs) with varying particle sizes (13 μm and 6.5 μm) on the growth and antioxidant responses of two freshwater algae species, Oscillatoria princeps ( O. princeps ) and Chlorella pyrenoidosa ( C. pyrenoidosa ). The results revealed a significant reduction in chlorophyll a content in both algal species upon exposure to PE-MPs, indicating a disruption of photosynthesis. Furthermore, Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) activity decreased in O. princeps , while Catalase (CAT) activity increased in both species, indicating complex physiological responses to microplastic stress. Notably, phycotoxin levels in O. princeps decreased with PE-MP exposure, while those in C. pyrenoidosa increased, particularly with 6.5 μm PE-MPs. These findings underscore the potential toxic effects of PE-MPs on freshwater algal growth and metabolism, as well as their influence on toxin production. This study contributes valuable insights into the ecotoxicological impacts of microplastics in freshwater environments, highlighting the need for further research on their biological effects and environmental health implications.
