Abstract:To endow hydrophobic poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membranes with reliable hydrophilicity and protein resistance, an amphiphilic hyperbranched-star polymer (HPE-g-MPEG) with about 12 hydrophilic arms in each molecule was synthesized by grafting methoxy poly(ethylene glycol) (MPEG) to the hyperbranched polyester (HPE) molecule using terephthaloyl chloride (TPC) as the coupling agent and blended with PVDF to fabricate porous membranes via phase inversion process. The chemical composition changes of the membrane surface were confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and the membrane morphologies were measured by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Water contact angle, static protein adsorption, and filtration experiments were used to evaluate the hydrophilicity and anti-fouling properties of the membranes. It was found that MPEG segments of HPE-g-MPEG enriched at the membrane surface substantially, while the water contact angle decreased as low as 49 degrees for the membrane with a HPE-g-MPEG/PVDF ratio of 3/10. More importantly, the water contact angle of the blend membrane changed little after being leached continuously in water at 60 degrees C for 30 days, indicating a quite stable presence of HPE-g-MPEG in the blend membranes. Furthermore, the blend membranes showed lower static protein adsorption, higher water and protein solution fluxes, and better water flux recovery after cleaning than the pure PVDF membrane.
Improved Antifouling Properties of Polyvinyl Chloride Blend Membranes by Novel Phosphate Based-Zwitterionic Polymer Additive

Abstract:To improve the antifouling properties of polymer membranes, a novel phosphate-based zwitterionic polymer (methacryloyloxyethylphosphorylcholine-co-poly(propylene glycol) methacrylate, i.e., MPC-PPGMA) is introduced into the polyvinyl chloride (PVC) membrane matrix. The solubility of this zwitterionic copolymer in common organic solvents and the compatibility between this copolymer and PVC are studied. A series of PVC blend membranes are prepared via non-solvent induced phase separation based on the good compatibility of the copolymer with PVC. Surface chemical compositions, wettability and porous structures of the membranes are characterized. Fluorescence-labeled proteins static adsorption and organic foulant filtration are conducted to evaluate the fouling resistance of the blend membranes. Antibiofouling properties of the membranes are also confirmed by the immersing method. Doping MPC-PPGMA in the casting solution can significantly improve the surface hydrophilicity and antifouling properties of the PVC blend membranes due to the strong hydration ability of the zwitterionic segments. The blend membranes show excellent and stable resistance to both organic fouling and biofouling. Overall, the novel zwitterionic copolymer MPC-PPGMA is a promising candidate to develop antifouling blend membranes due to its high effectiveness and long-term stability in the membranes.
Preparation of Multipurpose Polyvinylidene Fluoride Membranes via a Spray-Coating Strategy Using Waterborne Polymers

Abstract:As reported herein, the waterborne polymers poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate) P(GMA-co-mPEGMA) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) were used to prepare multipurpose polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes via a direct spray-coating method. P(GMA-co-mPEGMA) and PEI were alternately sprayed onto the PVDF membrane to yield stable cross-linked copolymer coatings. The successful coating of polymers onto the membrane surface was verified by scanning electron microscopy, attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy characterization. The coated membrane exhibited oil rejection rates that exceeded 99.0% for oil water mixture separation and 98.0% for oil/water emulsion separation. The flux recovery ratio reached 96.7% after bovine serum albumin filtration and washing with water. The removal efficiencies of the coated membrane M3 for Congo red, methyl orange, methylene blue, and crystal violet, Pb(II), Cu(II), and Cd(II) were 82.4, 83.9, 6.3, 26.8, 90.6, 91.3, and 86.2%, respectively. Thus, it can be used for the removal of dyes and heavy metal ions from wastewater. The antibacterial activities of the coated membranes were also confirmed by the inhibition zone tests and confocal laser scanning microscopy analysis. In addition, the cross-linking strategy provides the coated membranes with excellent durability and repeatability. More importantly, the use of water as the solvent can ensure that the application of these membrane coatings proceeds via a very safe and environmentally friendly coating process.

Abstract:The efficient treatment of oil-water emulsions under acidic condition remains a widespread concern. Poly(amidoamine) (PAMAM) dendrimer with hyperbranched structures and a large amount of primary and tertiary amino groups has exhibited advantages to solve this issue. Here, a novel poly(vinylidene fluoride)-graft-(SiO2 nanoparticles and PAMAM dendrimers) (PVDF-g-SiO2 NPs/PAMAM) membrane was fabricated using a surface-grafting strategy. SiO2 NPs were immobilized on PVDF-g-poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) membranes for improving the surface roughness, and PAMAM dendrimers were further immobilized on the membrane surface by interfacial polymerization (IP) for improving the surface energy. The obtained membrane demonstrated a water contact angle and a stable underwater-oil contact angle of 0 degrees and >150 degrees, respectively. These characteristics endowed the membrane with excellent water permeability [>3100 L/(m(2).h) at 0.9 bar] and separation efficiency (>99%) during oil-water separation. Furthermore, the PAMAM chain will extend from a collapsed state into a fully extension state because of the protonation of amine groups under acidic condition, thus achieving a low underwater oil-adhesion property, fouling resistance, desirable stability, and recyclability (over 12 cycles) during usage. This work shows a promising prospect for the treatment of corrosive emulsions under acidic condition.

Abstract:The surface structure and properties of a membrane largely determine its in-service performance during a filtration process. Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) hydrophobic membrane is widely used in the separation of oily waste water because of its mechanical strength, but is susceptible to oil fouling, whereas hydrophilic membranes are easily damaged in water due to their wettability but are resistant to oil. The advantages of the two membranes are then combined by modifying the hydrophobic membrane to be hydrophilic to maintain stability, mechanical strength, and antifouling performance. PVDF ultrafiltration membranes were modified with a mixture of different concentrations of polydopamine (PDA) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) using different deposition times (6, 12, and 24 h) and characterized using SEM, FTIR, and contact angle. Membrane performance was tested using a dead-end module for 60 minutes. The PDA-modified membrane showed a decrease in hydrophilicity from 88.1° to 77.7° after being coated with 0.5 g/L PDA for 6 hours, while with the addition of 2 g/L PEI, the hydrophilicity reached 64.6°. SEM characterization showed the presence of aggregates formed during the PDA polymerization process and decreased with the addition of PEI. This is in line with the results obtained from the performance test with the dead-end module where the smaller the aggregate, the greater the flux produced. FTIR characterization showed a strong bond between PDA and PDA-PEI with the membrane as the concentration and coating time increased.
A Stable Anti-Fouling Coating on PVDF Membrane Constructed of Polyphenol Tannic Acid, Polyethyleneimine and Metal Ion

Abstract:A hydrophilic and anti-fouling coating layer was constructed on a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) microfiltration membrane by a novel surface modification method. The pristine membrane was firstly coated by (3-chloropropyl) trimethoxysilane/polyethyleneimine and tannic acid. Then, the metal ion was induced on the coating layer to coordinate with tannic acid and polyethyleneimine, forming a more stable and hydrophilic coating on the surface. The membrane’s surface morphology and chemical element analysis showed that the Tannic acid/ polyethyleneimine (TA/PEI) coating layer was denser and had more stability after the addition of metal ions, and this may be due to the coordination bond formed between the TA/PEI coating and metal ions. The results of the water contact angle and pure water flux measurements showed that the hydrophilicity and wettability of the modified membranes were improved obviously after introducing the metal ion layers. The anti-fouling performance and stability of the modified membrane were also characterized by the underwater oil contact angle (OCA), the separation efficiency, and the contact angle variation value for before and after the rinsing experiment. The modified membrane showed obvious stability and antifouling. Moreover, the retention rate of some composite membranes could reach 99.6%.

Abstract:Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)@Fe3O4 composite membranes were prepared by phase inversion, followed by crosslinking with hydrophilic silane-based prepolymers. The influences of Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) on morphology, chemistry, hydrophilicity, electric charge and roughness of membrane surfaces were investigated by a number of characterization techniques. The results revealed that the dispersed Fe3O4 nanoparticles reduced the micropores of the composite membrane and maintained the membrane surface roughness. Meanwhile, the dispersed Fe3O4 enabled the membrane to capture more hydrophilic silane-based prepolymers, thereby leading to a robust, dense and zwitterionic characteristic hydration layer on the membrane surface. The reinforced hydration layer imparted the membrane surface with more stable water permeability and higher rejections to humic acid (HA), bovine serum albumin (BSA) and soybean oil during five cycles of cross-flow separation. According to the resistance-in-series model, the anti-oil-fouling mechanism of the membrane relied on manipulating the hydration layer on the membrane surface to prevent the foulants from approaching the membrane surface. The surface-immobilized Fe3O4 facilitated the hydration layer to repel HA and BSA to permeate through the membrane via chelation and adsorption, and then reduced the membrane internal fouling. Our findings provide a new strategy to construct antifouling membrane surfaces by properly tailoring the strength and thickness of the surface hydration layer.

Abstract:Membrane separation is one of the simple and efficient methods for treating oily wastewater. To improve the efficiency of oil-in-water emulsion separation, alkali treatment was used to promote the deposition of Fe (III) on poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membranes, and the tannic acid (TA)-glutathione (GSH) hydrophilic coating was produced on the membrane surface by biomimetic coating method under weak alkaline conditions. The PVDF membrane with hydrophilic coating and multi-layered surface structure showed hydrophilic/ underwater superoleophobic. Meanwhile, the permeability and antifouling properties were significantly enhanced. According to the experimental results, the optimized modified membrane (MF-3) had excellent pure water flux (3368.0 ± 94.2 L·m −2 ·h −1 ), and oil rejection was 99.3 ± 0.2 % for toluene-in-water emulsion. In addition, after simulated fouling and regeneration by bovine serum albumin (BSA) solution, the flux recovery rate reached 97.0 %. Excellent underwater anti-oil adhesion and antifouling properties help maintain high separation efficiency during multiple filtration cycles. The chemical stability of the modified membranes was demonstrated after 7 d immersion in acid, alkali, and salt solutions, respectively. The superior performances of the membrane are attributed to the constructed hydrophilic coating. This environmentally friendly PVDF membrane modification strategy has great potential for application in oil-in-water emulsion separation and provides a reliable solution for sustainable development.

Abstract:Dip coating technology is often used for hydrophilic modification of PVDF membrane surfaces due to its significant modification effect, simple process and low cost. Nevertheless, the relatively feeble binding forces between coating molecules and between the coating and the substrate membrane often raise concerns about the stability of modified membranes. This study utilized PAA and Sac-100 to develop a hydrophilic and negatively charged coating to improve the anti-fouling characteristics of PVDF membranes in the process of oil/water separation. Two modification reagents underwent ring opening crosslinking reaction and ultimately deposited on the surface of PVDF membranes in the form of a network polymer, thereby solving the stability problem of the modification coating. After the modification, the surface microstructure of the membranes remained unchanged, while the average pore size fell from 0.37 mu m to 0.32 mu m. The water contact angle of the modified membrane decreased to 39 degrees suggesting an excellent hydrophilic property. The modified PVDF membrane exhibited exceptional resistance to fouling in the oil/water separation experiment, demonstrating a consistent permeance value of 212 L m- 2 h- 1 bar- 1 that was four times higher than that of the original membrane. Following the cleaning process, the permeance of the modified membrane could be restored to a level of 74.5 %.
Highly Effective Anti-Organic Fouling Performance of a Modified PVDF Membrane Using a Triple-Component Copolymer of P(Stx-co-MAAy)-g-fPEGz as the Additive

Abstract:In this study, a triple-component copolymer of P(Stx-co-MAAy)-g-fPEGz containing hydrophobic (styrene, St), hydrophilic (methacrylic acid, MAA), and oleophobic (perfluoroalkyl polyethylene glycol, fPEG) segments was synthesized and used as an additive polymer to prepare modified PVDF membrane for enhanced anti-fouling performance. Two compositions of St:MAA at 4:1 and 1:1 for the additive and two blending ratios of the additive:PVDF at 1:9 and 3:7 for the modified membranes were specifically examined. The results showed that the presence of the copolymer additive greatly affected the morphology and performance of the modified PVDF membranes. Especially, in a lower ratio of St to MAA (e.g., St:MAA at 1:1 versus 4:1), the additive polymer and therefore the modified PVDF membrane exhibited both better hydrophilic as well as oleophobic surface property. The prepared membrane can achieve a water contact angle at as low as 48.80° and display an underwater oil contact angle at as high as 160°. Adsorption experiments showed that BSA adsorption (in the concentration range of 0.8 to 2 g/L) on the modified PVDF membrane can be reduced by as much as 93%. From the filtration of BSA solution, HA solution, and oil/water emulsion, it was confirmed that the obtained membrane showed excellent resistance to these organic foulants that are often considered challenging in membrane water treatment. The performance displayed slow flux decay during filtration and high flux recovery after simple water cleaning. The developed membrane can therefore have a good potential to be used in such applications as water and wastewater treatment where protein and other organic pollutants (including oils) may cause severe fouling problems to conventional polymeric membranes.

Abstract:A novel polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) cross-linked polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) (PVA-β-CD/PVDF) ultrafiltration membrane was prepared via in situ cross-linking in combination with non-solvent induced phase separation. Compared with PVDF/PVA blending membrane, cross-linking solved the issue of interface pores on the membrane surface caused by poor compatibility. And obvious cross-linking polymers were observed inside the membrane, which introduced more hydrophilic hydroxyl groups and thus enhanced the overall hydrophilicity of the membrane. When the PVA/β-CD ratio was 1:2, the cross-linked membrane exhibited better hydrophilicity, the dynamic water contact angle decreased from 74.6° to less than 2.5° in 65s, and the maximum pure water flux of 4561.5 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 (about 11 times that of PVDF membrane), BSA rejection ratio of 96.7% and a flux recovery rate of 93.5% were obtained. The mean pore size was 0.064 μm, and porosity was 78.44%. It could be concluded that in situ cross-linking simultaneously improved the penetration, separation and antifouling performances of the modified membranes. Our work provides some insights into fabricating high permeable and antifouling PVDF ultrafiltration membranes.

Abstract:Abstract Membrane surface design, especially for the anti-protein fouling property, is vital for the development of synthetic polymer ultrafiltration membranes. Although mussel-inspired antifouling coatings have obtained rapid development, the surface chemical adhesion stability still suffers from weak chemical stability especially in strongly alkaline environment. In this paper, the surfaces of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes were modified via traditional polydopamine (PDA) coating followed with polyethylene glycol (PEG) immobilization method and PDA/PEG co-deposition strategy. In contrast to general PDA coating, the fabricated membrane surface exhibits excellent chemical adhesion stability under the different solution environment (whatever in neutral deionic water solution, acidic solution (pH=2) or strongly alkaline solution (pH=14)). The membrane surface elementary composition and morphologies were evaluated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The modified membranes obtained via co-deposition were confirmed to have excellent hydrophilicity, enhanced coating stability and good dynamic/static anti-protein adhesion properties. Overall, this work provides a facile, robust and useful bio-inspired anti-fouling membrane surface modification strategy for broadening the application in water treatment field of ultrafiltration membranes.
Antifouling PVDF membranes fabricated via progressive potassium ion-π assembly of dopamine

Abstract:Mussel-inspired surface modification draws a lot of attention for improving membrane antifouling property. However, it remains a serious challenge to fabricate a strong hydrophilic layer on the rough surface, preventing the pollutants to adhere to them during the filtration process. Here, a progressive cation-π assembly of polydopamine (PDA) was introduced to boost the antifouling property of the rough polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane, which was fabricated by the non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) method using alcohol as the non-solvent. Afterward, dopamine and 3-sulfopropyl methacrylate potassium salt (SMPS) were co-deposited on the rough membranes via K+-π interactions, leading to more than 20% increment in graft yield compared with DA layer at the same deposition time. In addition, spin-spin relaxation time (T2) of water of DS modified membrane characterized by relaxation NMR decreased 484.9 ms, revealing strong hydration capability on the membrane surface and excellent water hydrophilicity. Benefited by the hydration capability, improved antifouling performance was obtained against natural organic polymers and crude oil, and good oil-in-water emulsions separation property without pressure. The K+-π interactions assistance dopamine assembly indicated a convenient technique for improving the antifouling performance of the rough membrane with a thick and strong hydrophilic layer.

Abstract:PVDF membrane has strong hydrophobicity and low anti-pollution performance, greatly limiting its practical application. These drawbacks have been successfully overcome by designing and then preparing a membrane with a semi-interpenetrating polymer (semi-IPN) of PVDF/poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) as the membrane matrix, TiO2 nanoparticles as functional components and F127 as pore-forming agent. The semi-IPN was prepared by copolymerizing acrylic acid with N,N methyl acrylamide in the presence of PVDF, and the TiO2 gel nanoparticles were in situ formed in the membrane-forming process. The properties of the composite membrane were significantly affected by the semi-IPN, F127 and TiO2. By adjusting the membrane structure with the semi-IPN, F127 and TiO2 nanoparticles, we prepared a composite membrane with a water contact angle of 40°, a BSA rejection ratio of 87.5% and a water flux of 802.5 L/m2/h/bar. After a simple UV irradiation, the water flux of this composite membrane rose to 1030 L/m2/h/bar, without any rejection decline. The membrane contaminated by humic acid could recover the water flux up to above 95.3% of its original value by a single UV irradiation, showing a very good antifouling performance. In addition, the composite membrane also exhibited a very strong pollution resistance and separation performance for bovine serum albumin and oil-water emulsion. All in all, based on the synergy of the semi-IPN and the evenly dispersed TiO2 nanoparticles, the prepared composite membrane exhibited excellent comprehensive properties and demonstrated a great potential for various separation applications.

Abstract:This work aims to improve the antifouling property of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membrane. The pristine PVDF membrane was treated with alkali solution, and then the [2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl] trimethylammonium chloride (DMC) and 2-acrylamide-2-methyl propane sulfonic acid (AMPS) monomers were grafted to yield a polyampholyte membrane surface via radical grafting copolymerization. The structural evolution of the membrane was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectra attenuated total reflection spectra (ATR-FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). The surface hydrophilicity of membranes was determined by pure water contact angle. The fouling resistance of the membranes was evaluated via protein adsorption and cycle filtration. With the increase of alkali-treatment periods from 0 to 20 min, the grafting degree (GD) of polyampholyte layer increases from 0 to 225.8 μg/cm2, and the membrane surface pores are gradually covered with grafting layers. The hydrophilicity of PVDF membrane was significantly enhanced by the covalent immobilization of polyampholyte layer, resulting in inhibition of protein adsorption. The pure water flux recovery (FRR) of the polyampholyte membrane is much higher than that of the pristine PVDF membrane. Irreversible membrane fouling is gradually transmitted into reversible membrane fouling in the filtration process. The polyampholyte membrane exhibits a better protein fouling resistance than pristine PVDF membrane.

Abstract:A novel strategy was proposed to fabricate a multifunctional bilayer membrane to remove organic dyes from wastewater efficiently. The composite membrane (PVDF@FCC-MCF 1 ) consisted of a conductive polymer layer of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and Fe-Co-loaded carbon nanotubes (FCC) and a hydrophilic cotton fabric layer modified via copolymerization of catechol and polyethyleneimine. Significantly, the incorporation of Fe-Co-loaded carbon nanotubes in a conductive polymer layer enables PVDF@FCC-MCF's own self-cleaning and regenerative performances at 6 V direct voltage. Compared to the PVDF monolayer membrane, PVDF@FCC-MCF has exhibited an excellent water flux (337.36 L·m −2 ·h −1 ) under flow-through filtration mode without external pressure, and an increased dye rejection rate from 70.90% to 90.36% for 15 mg/L of direct dye even after 12 cycles. Meanwhile, the f-PVDF@FCC-MCF (turning PVDF@FCC-MCF over) has excellent separation performance (oil/water separation efficiency > 99.00% and dye removal up to 96.14%) for oil/water/dye mixtures. This flexible integration of FCC-based electrochemical self-cleaning capabilities and the super hydrophilicity/ underwater superoleophobicity capabilities of modified cotton fabrics into composite membranes can serve as an effective antifouling of membranes.

Abstract:Oil‐fouling of the membranes limits further application in the separation and purification of oil‐in‐water emulsions. Here, anti‐oil fouling membranes are engineered by the method of non‐solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) which enriches the polysulfonated dopamine (PSDA) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) (PSDA‐PEI) to the top surface from mixed casting solution. The obtained membrane achieves excellent anti‐oil fouling property as high as 98.2% oil rejection, yet it still possesses good flux of 2362.5 ± 110.9 and 1252.3 ± 71.8 L m−2 h−1 for the separation of 1,2‐dichloroethane‐in‐water and toluene‐in‐water emulsions. This can be attributed to outstanding hydrophilicity and super underwater superoleophobicity for mussel‐inspired PSDA‐PEI layer. In addition, the membrane also has excellent stability in acid (pH 1, 3, and 5) or alkali (pH 10 and 12) solutions. This work provides a facile method to engineer underwater superoleophobic membranes with excellent anti‐oil fouling by mussel‐inspired chemistry for oily water treatment.

Abstract:Membrane fouling is an inevitable problem during the process of oil/water separation by membrane separation technology. In this work, we fabricated a polyamide-amine/PVDF gel membrane with hydrophilic surfaces via a thiol-alkene click chemical method. The polyamide-amine (PAMAM) dendrimer gel was grafted on the surface of PVDF membranes to improve hydrophilicity of membranes. The results showed that the obtained membrane possesses superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity repellent properties, along with excellent oil adhesion resistance. The water permeance can reach 12300 L∙m -2 ∙h -1 ∙bar -1 with a high recovery rate of 98%, with a prominent separation efficiency surpassing 98.5%. Furthermore, the gel membrane also displays remarkable environmental durability and recyclability, ensuring durable and effective separation of oily wastewater even in harsh chemical environments.

Abstract:The PDA/PEI modification technology is commonly employed to improve the resistance to membrane fouling of polymeric membranes used in the treatment of oily wastewater. Nevertheless, the surface characteristics of membrane materials frequently restrict the implementation of the modification technique in terms of both the amount and speed of deposition. The hydrophobic membranes, such as PVDF and PTFE, have a surface with very low surface free energy and only inert functional groups. This surface is not suitable for the deposition of PDA/PEI. This study utilized plasma etching treatment to break the C–H and C–F bonds on the surface of the PVDF membrane, resulting in the introduction of oxygen-containing functional groups. During the deposition process, the PDA/PEI exhibited a tendency to chemically connect to material surfaces that included oxygen-containing functional groups, such as –OH, by processes such as hydrogen bonding. During the modification procedure, the etched membrane experienced an increase in the mass of PDA/PEI deposition and the strength of interfacial bonding. As a result, the modified membrane acquired improved hydrophilicity and anti-fouling performance. In summary, this study offers useful insights for improving the surface properties of hydrophobic polymeric membranes to prevent membrane fouling.
