Abstract:Religious belief is a topic of longstanding interest to psychological science, but the psychology of religious disbelief is a relative newcomer. One prominently discussed model is analytic atheism, wherein analytic thinking overrides religious intuitions and instruction. Consistent with this model, performance-based measures of reliance on analytic thinking predict religious disbelief in WEIRD (Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, & Democratic) samples. However, the generality of analytic atheism remains unknown. Drawing on a large global sample (N = 3461) from 13 religiously, demographically, and culturally diverse societies, we find that analytic atheism is in fact quite fickle cross-culturally, only appearing robustly in aggregate analyses and in three individual countries. Such complexity implies a need to revise simplistic theories of religious disbelief as primarily grounded in cognitive style. The results provide additional evidence for culture’s effects on core beliefs, highlighting the power of comparative cultural evidence to clarify core mechanisms of human psychological variation.

Abstract:The integration of religion and spirituality into social work education and practice remains a contentious topic of debate. For Christian social workers, social work students and educators, integrating theories of faith and faith experiences into the educational process can be beneficial. To date there has been little evidence on how teaching spirituality and religion content in accredited programs is enhancing practice. This article presents a conceptual roadmap for instructors and students preparing to enter field practicum. By aligning Fowler's Stages of Faith with students' anticipatory process, instructors can be better equipped to navigate each stage of development.

Abstract:This essay argues with urgency the need for psychoanalysts to redress a dangerous lacuna in psychoanalytic praxis. There is, Lentz argues, a disturbing inattention to the quiet but devastating reality that many treatments end because the analyst has died or has become too ill to practice. Lentz focuses on patients' traumatic experiences of this kind of loss, which can ultimately render the treatment harmful rather than healing. Through clinical examples, literature review, and autobiographical narrative, she demonstrates the many ways that the "patient goes missing," both on a psychical level and as a result of a collective disavowal by the field. Lentz discusses commonly-held patient affects, including the patient's "felt insignificance" to the analyst, and resonances of boundary violation which can permeate the patient's sense of loss. At root, this is meant to be an activist essay, calling on reform in the field, and offering some suggestions for change.

Abstract:Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association, Ahead of Print. Given that practicing teleanalytically is relatively new and more widespread than ever, questions about how to practice and teach it effectively have increased and are more pressing than ever. To contribute answers to these questions, this paper addresses long-standing and persisting negative views of teleanalysis as an inherently muted, remote, and pale experience with reduced therapeutic effectiveness. I propose that this view of teleanalysis as inherently inferior to in-office analysis limits or even precludes its therapeutic usefulness because it allows analysts to avoid making analytic use of the disturbing feelings hiding within the experience of practicing teleanalysis. Through case examples, I suggest that when analysts do not take our negative views of teleanalysis at face value but instead consider them as symbolic expressions of our and our patients' anxieties, we can improve our understanding of our analytic functioning within the tele-setting and enhance our capacity to think and engage analytically effectively in any setting. I maintain that these considerations have important implications, not only for how experienced analysts practice, but also for how we treat and teach future analysts.

Abstract:This paper explores a ten-year analytic relationship through the lens of analyst as patient dealing with love and loss. The patient is witness to her analyst's mind succumbing to dementia. The vault of encrypted memory, containing the years of work, is under attack. Juxtaposing moments of dementia madness are shared space connected to significant expansion of mind and emotional experience. This experience challenges all framework of psychoanalytic work, and yet it doesn't. Psychoanalysis espouses giving patients: meaning, vitality, sturdiness, and an expansive emotional range of experiences. This analytic work accomplished these features and more. But, what does it mean to be held in mind when the analyst mind has been highjacked by a paranoid delusion momentarily? Moreover, delusions of persecution reflect profound fear and anxiety with the loss of the ability to tell what's real and what's not. Delusions are a common feature of dementia. Delusions are often triggered by memory loss connected to simple things like losing one's keys. My lived story of personal transformation lives among the mind field of sporadic delusions sometimes expressed by my analyst's mind. What happens to psychoanalytic work when the vault of the analyst mind is compromised by dementia?

Abstract:Addressing the patient's anxieties about the meaning of life and death as integral phenomena of the life cycle is not commonly discussed in the analytic literature. A central dilemma of analytic work is the effort to facilitate change in the life of a suffering patient while also bearing in mind the inescapable human destiny, i.e., the certainty of death. All too often, these factors remain in the background while dealing with other conflicts or misfortunes. The analyst, like the patient, is aware of the brevity of life and is susceptible to the same fate, and thus may feel defenseless, helpless, and limited in what can be offered. This article incorporates the existentialist thinking of Camus on the subject and illuminates it with analytic work with unspoken trauma of a second-generation Holocaust survivor.

Abstract:C. G. Jung’s openness to the transcendent nature of the psyche has appealed to those seeking an alternative to the more ego-centered approach promoted by traditional Freudian psychoanalysis. Yet despite the significant philosophical implications of Jung’s ideas, he always emphasized their pragmatic and clinical nature: helping grapple with neuroses/psychoses and sundry symptoms borne of mental conflict. While abstract concepts from analytical psychology provide a useful schema to make sense of suffering, such theoretical conceptualizations can, when dogmatically misapplied in the consulting room, permit both analyst and patient to by-pass the concrete existential reality of the analytic relationship. The ability and willingness to be fully present to the angst of both patient and “self-as-therapist” is perhaps the most essential aspect of existential psychotherapy. In this article, the authors propose a concordance between existentialist and Jungian approaches that positions the work of analysis as a creative engagement with patients’ subjective experiences without avoiding or diminishing the here-and-now experience of the therapeutic encounter, arguing that such cross-fertilization could offer an integrative form of treatment more faithful to the unique existence of each individual and analytic pair than either approach on its own.

Abstract:Questions concerning analysts' publication of material from the analyses of their patients have troubled the field of psychoanalysis since its inception. Disguise inevitably distorts the clinical material and is often insufficient to protect the patient from recognition. Asking the patient's consent for publication intrudes upon and alters the analytic process. While analysts have largely reached a consensus about the need for anonymity in published material, there is still considerable debate about the necessity for obtaining patients' consent when using their material for publication. In this paper, I will trace the evolving meanings of disguise, and particularly of consent, in the analytic literature. I will place a particular emphasis upon the differing theoretical belief systems that underlie the analyst's decision to ask consent from her patient or not to do so, and I will argue that, although decisions on asking consent remain a complex matter, such coherent belief systems should play an important part in analysts' decisions regarding consent. I will illustrate my thought processes and some clinical situations with brief examples, and I will conclude with some practical recommendations, with the hope that these will stimulate further discussion in the analytic community.

Abstract:Ensuring faithfulness to context in large language models (LLMs) and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) systems is crucial for reliable deployment in real-world applications, as incorrect or unsupported information can erode user trust. Despite advancements on standard benchmarks, faithfulness hallucination-where models generate responses misaligned with the provided context-remains a significant challenge. In this work, we introduce FaithEval, a novel and comprehensive benchmark tailored to evaluate the faithfulness of LLMs in contextual scenarios across three diverse tasks: unanswerable, inconsistent, and counterfactual contexts. These tasks simulate real-world challenges where retrieval mechanisms may surface incomplete, contradictory, or fabricated information. FaithEval comprises 4.9K high-quality problems in total, validated through a rigorous four-stage context construction and validation framework, employing both LLM-based auto-evaluation and human validation. Our extensive study across a wide range of open-source and proprietary models reveals that even state-of-the-art models often struggle to remain faithful to the given context, and that larger models do not necessarily exhibit improved <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://faithfulness.Project" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> is available at: \url{<a class="link-external link-https" href="https://github.com/SalesforceAIResearch/FaithEval" rel="external noopener nofollow">this https URL</a>}.

Abstract:Training in Zurich has its own special character but also is marked by the very fact that it is in Zurich. Zurich radiates its own distinct energy and carries a specific historical significance in the world of analytical psychology. This, like all things with psychic energy, has a spectrum of meaning. This spectrum, as well as the 'spirit' of the place, will be critically examined, taking into account the 'blessings' and 'curses' of such genius loci. Training in Zurich is experientially based and is first and foremost an initiation: an initiation into symbolic life, or rather life where symbol plays an important role. Training is understood to involve a transformation of one's self, much like the 8th century alchemist Morienus Romanus understood the opus as a 'human transformation system'. It is not merely an education. The requirement of 'immersion' is core to the experience of becoming an analyst in Zurich and this sets up a valuable discomfort between rational intellectual learning and intuitive experience, between knowing and not-knowing. How does this dis-serve the making of an analyst? What is implicit in this immersion and its discomfort? Does it have a role in today's emphasis on clinical and empirical training? Does Zurich still offer something unique and valuable in the world of training, or is it passé? From these questions, the dichotomy of what is 'urgent' and 'essential' in training will be examined.

Abstract:Faithfulness is arguably the most critical metric to assess the reliability of explainable AI. In NLP, current methods for faithfulness evaluation are fraught with discrepancies and biases, often failing to capture the true reasoning of models. We introduce Adversarial Sensitivity as a novel approach to faithfulness evaluation, focusing on the explainer's response when the model is under adversarial attack. Our method accounts for the faithfulness of explainers by capturing sensitivity to adversarial input changes. This work addresses significant limitations in existing evaluation techniques, and furthermore, quantifies faithfulness from a crucial yet underexplored paradigm.

[On the concept of "specificity" in morphological diagnosis].

Abstract:The present paper deals with the term specificity. The term is analyzed with respect to its linguistic deduction, as well as its mode of application to morphological objects. We come to the conclusion that specificity is not an absolute but rather a relative term, since it is graduable. Its meaning largely depends on the conditions under which it is applied to morphological objects. When applied to morphological criteria, the term specificity is concerned in most cases with differential diagnosis; it rarely refers to diagnosis. In other words: Under certain circumstances, specific criteria may be absolute and, therefore, proving, but usually they have merely a relative meaning in the sense of indicating and delineating.

Abstract:In this paper the author discusses two categories of patients which differ in terms of the impact they have in the countertransference. On the one hand, there are patients who create an empty space in the analyst's mind. The response they provoke is a kind of depressive feeling that remains after they leave. The patient may bring dreams and associations, but they do not reverberate in the analyst's mind. The experience is of dryness, a dearth of memory, which may--at times--leave the analyst with a sense of exclusion from the patient's internal world. At the other extreme, there are patients who fill the consulting room. They do that with their words, dreams and associations but also with their emotions and their actions. The experience is that the analyst is over-included in the patient's world. They have dreams that directly refer to the analyst and the analyst feels consistently involved in the patient's analysis. The pathway through which the analyst can understand both these types of patients is via the countertransference or, to put it another way, the analyst's passion. In 'Analysis terminable and interminable' Freud suggested that the bedrock of any analysis is the repudiation of femininity. The author believes this statement may be viewed as lying at the crossroads of the discussion about the limits of the theoretical and clinical psychoanalytic formulations which she refers to. In the examples presented the author relates the repudiation of femininity in its connections to the gaps implicit in psychoanalytic understanding.
Hidden in plain sight: Working class and low-income atheists.

Abstract:The current study sought to qualitatively examine the role of social class in the development of atheist identity, the experience of atheism-related minority stress, and relationships between atheists. Using a critical phenomenological design, we captured the experiences of 15 working-class and the low-income U.S. American atheists and identified five themes: Early Doubts and Establishment of Atheist Values; Diverse Experiences of Antiatheist and Class-Based Stigma; Expecting Indifference, Exercising Caution; Strategies of Concealment and Disclosure; and Atheism as an Individual, Rather Than Collective, Experience. Results suggested working-class and low-income atheists engaged in strategic outness to manage risk and their atheist identities developed similarly to studies including primarily class-privileged atheists. However, working-class and low-income atheists diverged from extant atheism scholarship in their relatively low atheist identity centrality and limited engagement with and perceived connection to other atheists. Abstract:Psychoanalytic training in countries with no accredited training program or official link to the international psychoanalytic community is possible only through technology. Serious controversies surround the legitimacy of distance training, based primarily on doubts about the efficacy of distance analysis. Curiously, in a discipline that prides itself on being a “talking cure,” an emphasis on the embodied presence of the analytic couple emerges in the literature over and over again. In fact, though, it’s through the use of language—and not through sight—that we achieve the aim of analysis. The information the analyst gathers from bodily presence is important, but even then the analyst’s job is to hear the patient’s unconscious communications. If an analyst, for whatever reason, is unable to hear the patient’s voice and unconscious communications, the analysis is bound to fail whether the patient is in the room or on the screen/phone. Being spatially distant poses no contradictions to psychoanalysis, as long as both parties—patient and analyst, supervisee and supervisor, candidate and instructor—are willing to listen, hear, and be heard emotionally.

Abstract:Using Kafka's short story A Country Doctor and clinical examples as vehicles, the author demonstrates the centrality of psychoanalysts' styles and life experiences to the psychoanalytic process. Albeit charged with a distinct facilitative task, psychoanalysts inevitably bring their qualities as "fellow sufferers" (to use D. M. Orange's term) into their sessions. They experience pressures placed upon them as the "subject presumed to know," as Lacan describes. They encounter the ubiquity of self-deception, facing many unknown and unpredictable elements as they surrealistically travel through time with their patients. While understandably wanting to take refuge from their vulnerability, psychoanalysts cannot escape the influence of their individualistic and idiosyncratic natures on the transformational encounters they facilitate.

Abstract:Increasing secularization, pluralization, and individualization have done much to weaken denominational identities and traditional religiosity in most Western countries since the 1960s, with the effect that—to echo Niklas Luhmann—being religious requires purely religious reasons. This also applies to young people, for whom religion is still an option, but precisely one option among others, and according to Charles Taylor quite a challenging one. In our article, we want to focus on young people who actively engage with faith and religion, and who take up a different position with regard to religion than their peers during their adolescence. The data are in-depth interviews with families with three generations present. We will explore the ways in which teenagers (aged 12–19) and young adults (aged 22–25) are confronted with religious issues, as well as how they decide upon these issues and justify their decisions. We will argue that both the societal context and the life phase of adolescence or young adulthood make it likely that a person will base decisions regarding religion upon the criterion of authenticity. Our findings demonstrate that especially positioning towards the question of belief can be a lengthy and conflictual process. We identified two main forms of religiosity that are socially accepted in contemporary society: deriving a sense of social responsibility from faith and transforming and translating belief and religious experience into secular contexts.

Abstract:Shame and the fear of shame can play highly significant roles for each participant in treatment. For example, the analyst may feel afraid that doing treatment will expose their insufficiencies as a clinician, and, even more broadly, as a human being. This paper discusses a number of varieties of the experience of shame, including those tinged with anger, guilt, and anxiety. It also examines the shame about feeling shame, which can be particularly troubling in training. Aspects of the candidate's position that may elicit shame are explored, with some suggestions about ways they could be ameliorated.
