To date there has been little evidence on how teaching spirituality and religion content in accredited programs is enhancing practice. This article presents a conceptual roadmap for instructors and students preparing to enter field practicum. Abstract:Purpose: This study explored the underlying process faith community nurses (FCNs) experience in developing their spiritual nursing practice. Design: A qualitative, exploratory design was used. Method: Data from interviews with six FCNs were generated and analyzed using Glaserian grounded theory. Findings: The basic social psychological process, cultivating the soul to become a channel of God, explains the steps these nurses take to achieve stages of presence. Going through these stages of presence, FCNs develop a foundation of God-related beliefs and values, presence with self, presence with God, presence with others, presence with God and others, and become a channel of God. Conclusions: Developing spiritual care competence in assessing and meeting clients’ spiritual needs is necessary to enhance person-centered practice, a vital aspect of holistic care. The model of presence can inform the development of spiritual care competencies and link to other nursing theories including Watson’s theory of caring and Benner’s novice to expert theory. Workplace support is needed for nurses to refine spiritual nursing care practices and integrate spiritual care into practice. Further research regarding the stages of presence could foster deeper understanding of how foundations of God-related values develop.

Abstract:There is ongoing debate within the bioethics literature regarding to what extent (if any) it is ethically justifiable for doctors to engage in religious discussion with their patients, in cases where patients cite religious considerations as influencing their medical decision‐making. In this paper, we concede that certain forms of religious discussion between doctors and patients are morally permissible (though not necessarily morally obligatory), insofar as patients' religious beliefs may comprise an important part of their overall wellbeing and can influence their medical decisions. However, we argue that it is not morally permissible for doctors to engage in substantive religious discussion with their patients, beyond simply inquiring about the patient's values (which may include their religious values) or referring patients to a chaplain or religious figure for further discussion. In support of this claim, we put forward two key arguments which have remained relatively unaddressed in the current debate. First, we argue that it is not practical for doctors to engage in substantive religious discussion with patients, and hence it cannot be morally obligatory for them to do so. Second, we argue that, while doctors might have a professional duty to ensure that their patient's religious interests (if any) are addressed, this does not entail that doctors themselves are the ones who should directly address these interests. Along the way, we anticipate and respond to some possible objections to these two key arguments.

Abstract:Academicians, business professionals, and researchers are increasingly recognizing and appreciating the relevance of spirituality in the workplace. In the current high-risk and unpredictable climate, it is considered an important aspect to manifest in modern workplaces. Many researchers have investigated the impact of spirituality in the workplace on various job outcomes, but the mechanism through which spirituality affects the job outcomes of employees is still lacking in the literature. This study is a rigorous empirical attempt in this direction. The major goal of the study was to look at the function of workplace stress as a mediator between workplace spirituality and job satisfaction. A cross-sectional survey was done with 450 faculty members working in India’s higher education institutions. Structural equation modeling through partial least square (PLS-SEM) in the 3.3.2 version of SmartPLS has been applied to reveal the hypothesized relationship. The results of this article will help higher education institutions better understand the spiritual side of their faculty members and develop timely, suitable policies to increase their job satisfaction.
The Spiritual Works of Mercy as a Tool to Prevent Burnout in Medical Trainees

Abstract:Burnout is highly prevalent among physicians and is associated with negative patient outcomes. Furthermore, medical training is a particularly vulnerable time as studies show that medical students, residents, and fellows experience burnout and emotional exhaustion at higher rates than both the general population and physicians in practice. Multiple recent studies have demonstrated the practice of religion and spirituality to be protective against burnout in trainees. Can Catholic academic physicians transfer these protective benefits of religion and spirituality to their trainees, who are at the highest risk, and who may or may not share their faith? An ancient Catholic tradition, the Seven Spiritual Works of Mercy, may hold the key. The Spiritual Works of Mercy are listed by the US Conference of Catholic Bishops as Counseling the Doubtful, Instructing the Ignorant, Admonishing the Sinner, Comforting the Sorrowful, Forgiving Injuries, Bearing Wrongs Patiently, and Praying for the Living and the Dead. Using this as a framework, examples of evidenced-based actions from the literature that have been shown to either prevent burnout or to improve the day-to-day experience of medical trainees were discussed. Examples include encouraging trainees to express doubts or to debrief after difficult and saddening cases. Academic physicians can provide instruction, feedback, or admonishment; demonstrate forgiveness of errors; and model the way in bearing wrongs patiently, all while uplifting their trainees in prayer. The Spiritual Works of Mercy can thus become a framework for academic physicians to uplift their trainees’ spirits and potentially prevent against burnout. Summary: Burnout is highly prevalent in medical students and in doctors during their residency or fellowship training, but multiple studies have shown regular practice of religion and spirituality to be protective against burnout. The Seven Spiritual Works of Mercy (Counsel the Doubtful, Instruct the Ignorant, Admonish the Sinner, Comfort the Sorrowful, Forgive All Injuries, Bear Wrongs Patiently and Pray for the Living and the Dead) provide a framework of powerful examples for teaching physicians, particularly Catholic teaching physicians, to uplift their students and potentially transfer this benefit to reduce their students’ risk for burnout.

Abstract:Due to its significant influence on the human experience, acknowledgment of religion/spirituality has been recognized by the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) as a core component of diversity competence. Whether a client associates with a certain faith dogma or they identify with a more atheistic or agnostic lifestyle, exploration into the role of religion/spirituality in a client's life can provide key insights into behavioral motivators, root causes of problems, and important sources of strength and resilience. In spite of this, research reveals that a majority of practicing social workers report little-to-no educational or professional preparation around religion/spirituality, leaving them unprepared and therefore unlikely to incorporate these factors into the therapeutic process. This article aims to outline the important impacts of religion/spirituality on micro, mezzo, and macro levels, explore the social worker's professional mandates around inclusion of these elements into clinical work, and then offer recommendations for how to effectively and ethically integrate religion/spirituality into professional practice. The four main principles of knowledge, awareness, education, and use of decision-making models can be applied to a wide range of ethical practice dilemmas and should be incorporated into any professional social work repertoire.

Abstract:This study aims to explore the influence of religious beliefs on health decision-making among diverse faith communities. The research seeks to understand how religious doctrines, practices, and community dynamics shape health behaviors, medical interventions, mental health approaches, and end-of-life decisions. A qualitative research design was employed, utilizing semi-structured interviews to gather in-depth insights from participants. A purposive sample of 30 individuals representing various religious traditions, including Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, and other minor faiths, was selected. Interviews were conducted in person or via video calls, recorded, and transcribed verbatim. Data analysis was performed using NVivo software, following a thematic approach to identify and categorize key themes and subthemes. Theoretical saturation was achieved when no new information emerged from the interviews. The study identified several key themes: the influence of religious beliefs on health, the role of religious communities, and the interplay between religion and medicine. Participants reported that their religious beliefs significantly influenced dietary practices, medical interventions, mental health approaches, and end-of-life decisions. Religious communities provided crucial emotional and financial support, while religious leaders played a significant role in guiding health decisions. The compatibility and conflicts between religious beliefs and medical advice were evident, with participants employing various strategies to negotiate these differences within medical contexts. Religious beliefs profoundly shape health decision-making across diverse faith communities. Healthcare providers must recognize and respect these beliefs to provide culturally competent and holistic care. Training programs that enhance cultural and religious competence, collaborative approaches involving religious leaders, and institutional policies that accommodate religious practices can improve patient satisfaction and health outcomes. Future research should explore these dynamics with larger, more diverse samples and mixed-methods approaches.

Abstract:Many Americans identify as religious or spiritual, with a large subset of these individuals identifying as Christian. However, many doctoral training programs neglect to incorporate religion and spirituality into their curricula in an intentional and integrated way. Past national research has documented that many professionals report feeling incompetent, ill-prepared, or reticent to attend to religion and spirituality matters in their teaching and practices. In contrast, Christian doctoral programs address this problem by intentionally hiring qualified faculty who can articulate a clear faith commitment, and through curricular offerings that emphasize the integration of faith and professional practice. By doing so, they offer an approach to doctoral education that incorporates an additional dimension in terms of secular professional diversity standards. Programs like the ones outlined in this article enhance their students' and trainees' competency by attending to religion and spirituality as diversity factors. Such programs also attend to religious diversity as an essential personal dimension of life for many clientele. Furthermore, the integration of faith with academic endeavors has the potential to deepen professional identity development and to offer the added layer of integrating occupation and spiritual vocation. Three sample programs are described in this article, highlighting how each doctoral program—one in clinical psychology, one in law, and one in business administration—distinctively practices Christian integration. The benefits of these programs to students and other professional training programs are also discussed.

Abstract:Purpose: In the present times, academicians, practitioners and researchers are finding spirituality in the work-place , as a vital topic for studies. Therefore, important insights are being showered through these studies. In the same way, This paper's aim is to analyse the impact of workplace spirituality (WPS) on job satisfaction (JS), job involvement (JI), and quality of work life (QWL). Moreover, it checks the mediating role of QWL in the relationship between WPS and JI. Design/methodology/approach: Through online questionnaire surveys, a sample of 257 respondents was gathered from the college lecturers in Delhi-NCR and analysed on IBM AMOS 23.0 using SEM. Findings: The results suggested that WPS significantly influences JI, job satisfaction (JS) and QWL. On the other hand, Quality of work life does not mediate the relationship between WPS and JI. Practical implication: The findings propose that the human resource department or top management must work on bringing workplace spirituality practices at the colleges. Social Implications: Enhancing Spirituality at the Workplace not only keeps an employee contented but also makes the society a better place to live in, by increasing helping hands for each other, bringing loyalty to the organization, and ultimately the growth of individuals along with the firm. Therefore, this research paper motivates to bring workplace spirituality practices for employees. Originality/value: The study provides a vital input to the literature by exploring the influence of WPS on QWL, JS, and JI. Also, the mediation of Quality of Work-life on the relationship between Workplace spirituality and Job Involvement is clarified.
Mental health professionals' perspectives on the relevance of religion and spirituality to mental health care

Abstract:Background: A large body of evidence indicates that spiritual and religious backgrounds, beliefs, and practices (SRBBPs) are related to better psychological health. Spirituality and religion (R/S) are also important aspects of multicultural diversity. There is evidence that clients would like to talk about their spirituality, and that including it in assessment and treatment planning can be beneficial. However, the extent to which practicing mental health professionals view SRBBPs as relevant to mental health and clinical practice is unclear. Methods: A survey examining several aspects of addressing SRBBPs in clinical practice was distributed to 894 professionals across mental health disciplines, including psychiatry, psychology, social work, marriage family therapy, licensed professional counselors, certified chemical dependency counselors, and psychiatric mental health nurses. Results: 89% of mental health professionals agreed that clinicians should receive training in R/S competencies. There were no differences between mental health disciplines in ratings of importance of such training. Younger individuals and those who identify as more spiritual were more likely to consider R/S training as important. Although 47.1% of professionals had not received much R/S training, many perceived themselves to be highly competent in R/S clinical integration practices (57.8% considered themselves able to display them very much or completely). In addition, respondents with more R/S training evaluated themselves as more proficient in R/S clinical integration. Nearly two-thirds (65.2%) of respondents reported encountering few to no barriers to engaging in R/S competent mental health care. Conclusions: There is a growing consensus among mental health care professionals that mental health professionals should be trained in R/S competencies. Strong agreement exists that basic R/S competencies include respect, empathy, examination of bias, and routine assessment of R/S in mental health care. Four in five of those surveyed agree that more active competencies, such as identifying and addressing religious and spiritual struggles and problems and helping clients explore and access R/S strengths and resources should be included, whereas one in five report less comfort with these competencies.
Cultivating Common Ground: The Intersection of Mental Health and Faith

Abstract:During and following the COVID-19 pandemic, the world experienced a significant increase in the prevalence of mental health problems along with a concomitant increase in mental health service utilization rates. Even though the stigma associated with mental health problems has been decreasing and service utilization rates have increased, these have not been seen in all segments of the population; for instance, some religious beliefs have been associated with less frequent and lower rates of mental health service use. In this commentary, the authors, an academic psychiatrist and a community-based pastor, describe how their informal academic-community collaboration led to a series of speaking opportunities to help an international group of clergy members develop a better understanding of mental health and how mental health problems may intersect with faith. They reflect on lessons learned from these opportunities and their professions, discuss opportunities for academic faculty to apply these lessons in their daily practices, and encourage academic faculty to consider a "common ground" approach in their own community outreach efforts. The authors underscore the importance of building connections with people who might have beliefs, views, or understandings of medical concepts that differ from academic medicine's and of teaching trainees how to build these connections. They challenge individual clinicians and academic faculty to identify spheres of influence that they have in their own lives through which they can create a positive impact for medicine and public health by finding shared experiences and common ground, clarifying misunderstandings, educating where needed, and serving as role models to encourage trainees to do the same.

Abstract:Objective: Although spiritual care is considered one of the pillars of palliative care, many health-care providers never receive formal training on how to communicate about spirituality with patients and families. The aim of this study was to explore the spiritual care experiences of oncology nurses in order to learn more about patient needs and nurse responses. Methods: A survey was circulated at a communication training course for oncology nurses in June 2015. Nurses recalled a care experience that included the initiation of a spiritual care topic and their response to the patient/family. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis. Results: Nurses reported that communication about spirituality was primarily initiated by patients, rather than family members, and spiritual topics commonly emerged during the end of life or when patients experienced spiritual distress. Nurses’ experiences highlighted the positive impact spiritual conversations had on the quality of patient care and its benefit to families. Spiritual communication was described as an important nursing role at the end of patients’ lives, and nonverbal communication, listening, and discussing patients’ emotions were emphasized as important and effective nurse communication skills during spiritual care conversations. Approximately one-third of nurses in the sample reported sharing their own personal spiritual or religious backgrounds with patients, and they reported that these sharing experiences strengthened their own faith. Conclusion: It is evident that patients want to discuss spiritual topics during care. Study findings illustrate the need to develop a spiritual communication curriculum and provide spiritual care communication training to clinicians.

Several prominent conceptualizations of spirituality are analyzed in an attempt to recover the distinctiveness of spirituality. An adequate understanding of spirituality for clinical use should run close to the lived spirituality of persons in their unique individuality, differing contexts and various persuasions. Abstract:Finding Common Ground (FCG) is an inter-belief dialogue program hosted in the Multi Faith Facility of Swinburne University of Technology. FCG is a voluntary program that offers Swinburne students a safe space to discuss their religious faith, or alternative value base, and to learn from those of others. Two iterations of this program were evaluated in 2018. We argue that nurturing healthy religious expression and cultivating respect for diverse religious and other belief frameworks is essential in today's multi-religious and pluralist world. Furthermore, we suggest that such exploration in the diverse (secular) university context is addressing something of 'an elephant in the room' in student life and learning in contemporary universities. We also recognise the reality of unhealthy expressions and fundamentalist assertions that fuel wider community aversion to a focus on overt religious conversations that tilt towards controversial debate and polarisation. This article principally analyses the experience of one student participant 'Antoni' to highlight significant themes reflected in the overall student responses: why FCG was a 'safe place' for dialogue, and how it cultivated empathy and humility, inter-faith community and pastoral support, healthy religious outlooks (rather than 'spiritual bypass') and personal formation.

Abstract:This paper investigates the influence of workplace spirituality on the effects of dispositional factors, specifically exploring the connection between dysfunctional thought processes on subjective well-being and job satisfaction. Multigroup comparison analysis is used to compare a secular work sample and a sample from an overtly spiritual workplace. The findings suggest that workplace spirituality attenuates the negative effect that dispositional qualities have on job satisfaction. This research has theoretical and practical implications suggesting that the dispositional model of job satisfaction has a boundary condition such that workplace spirituality may be a contextual influence which can be fostered by organizational leadership to disrupt dysfunctional thought processes, thus improving key individual and organizational outcomes.

Abstract:This article proposes an ethical decision‐making process for clinical practitioners that bridges the gap between more abstract ethical frameworks in our current literature and the actual process of ethical decision making that occurs at the practice level. The bridge is provided by the use of the concept of “moral dialogue,” which focuses on the ongoing interactions between clients and workers. The use of preexisting clinical skills guides the process of assessment and decision making rooted in the moral aspects of the challenges often embedded in practice situations. Furthermore, this article addresses the usefulness of the emerging literature on spirituality, diversity, narratives and transpersonal theory in adding to the social workers’ capacity to enter this realm of practice from a non‐moralistic stance. Hence, this approach avoids many of the pitfalls that have plagued clients and professionals throughout our history.
A social work contribution in end-of-life care: incorporating critical spirituality

Abstract:This article outlines how a framework for critical spirituality incorporated into a social work perspective, can contribute to work in end-of-life care. This is based on my experience of working in interdisciplinary teams, including pastoral care workers or chaplains, nurses, doctors, a range of carers and other allied health professionals. Traditionally, social workers have focused on the holistic well-being of the dying person and their families but tended not to actively include the spiritual. However, there is increased recognition in social work of the value of integrating critical spirituality: understanding the person's own sense of meaning and the social assumptions that might influence how this can be expressed. This might mean working with individuals and families on understanding how societal expectations of the dying process are undermining the person's desire to die in a particular way. To do this, workers must themselves recognise their own internalised societal assumptions and be willing to challenge these. The article explores the potential value of how such a social work approach can integrate critical, postmodern, green and relational theories as well as indigenous worldviews with key qualities of practice such as humility, deep listening and waiting, and the ability to be critically reflective. Key ideas are used to help focus practice and the inclusion of critical spirituality. These include (1) exploring the influence of the person's history and social context; (2) the value of particular relationships and networks, including community and environmental connections and activities and processes that are an intrinsic aspect of the person's well-being; (3) challenging workers to be critically and reflectively aware of their own assumptions and values to ensure the dying person can truly express their preferences related to death and dying. Examples from my experience are used to illuminate how such perspectives can be actively included in practice across professional boundaries to shift perceptions of 'how things are done here' to what can be more life enhancing for those in palliative care.
