Abstract:A robust understanding of body systems is elusive for many students. For instance, musculoskeletal structures and mechanisms often remain abstract and difficult for students to truly understand, even when teachers provide visual representations and accurate anatomical and physiological information. This article (1) presents a lesson for teaching about the musculoskeletal system by having students develop and build a physical model of an arm and (2) describes how teachers can use this experience to promote a deep understanding of the role of muscles, ligaments, and tendons in movement. This concrete learning experience and resulting arm model establishes a foundation for developing a more robust understanding of anatomical, physiological, and general biological principles. This lesson sequence also embeds questions that overtly draw students’ attention to important features of scientific models, which is an important nature of science issue appearing in the Next Generation Science Standards. The instructional sequence has been utilized as the foundation of an entire musculoskeletal unit in an elective anatomy and physiology course for ninth grade students, and it can easily be adapted for use in a middle school life science class or a general high school biology course.
Teaching Pterygopalatine Fossa Anatomy Using 3D Images and Physical Model: A Novel Teaching Strategy

Abstract:Medical students often struggle to appreciate the anatomy of the pterygopalatine fossa. This is due to the difficulty in understanding the spatial orientation through textbook diagrams, as well as its deeper location and smaller size in cadaveric specimens. Research has proven that three-dimensional visualization enhances the spatial understanding of anatomy. However, studies have not compared the effectiveness of two different instructional designs that cater to 3D visualization. We conducted a mixed methodology (quasi-experimental pre-test/post-test control design with additional qualitative components) study to compare the effectiveness of a physical model and a 3D image in small-group teaching. The students were divided into control and intervention groups based on their roll numbers. The control group utilized a series of 3D images delivered through Microsoft PowerPoint software on computers. The students in the intervention group used a physical model made of cardboard, with colored wires representing the neurovascular structures. We used 20 spatial anatomy-based multiple-choice questions (MCQs) to assess knowledge acquisition before and after the small group discussion. Additionally, we utilized a validated 10-item feedback questionnaire to evaluate participants' perception of the teaching sessions. There was no significant difference in the knowledge gain and perception scores between the control and intervention groups. These findings suggest that a well-designed 3D image can provide an equivalent learning outcome and level of satisfaction compared to a physical model. Use of 3D foot and ankle puzzle enhances student understanding of the skeletal anatomy in the early years of medical school

Abstract:Purpose: 3D visualization is an important part of learning anatomy with cadavers generally used to effectuate this. However, high cost, ethical considerations, and limited accessibility can often limit the suitability of cadavers as teaching tools. Anatomical 3D printed models offer an alternative tool for teaching gross anatomy due to their low cost and accessibility. This study aims to investigate if combing gamification with 3D printed models can enhance the learning experience and be effective for teaching anatomy. Methods: 3D printed models of the bones of the foot and ankle were generated, and 267 first-year medical students from 2 consecutive cohorts worked in groups to put it together as a puzzle. Participants completed a questionnaire regarding perceptions of 3D models and their knowledge of foot anatomy, before and after the session and were asked to provide comments. Results: Analysis of the responses showed a significant increase in the confidence of the learners in their anatomy knowledge and an increased appreciation of the role that 3D models have in enhancing the learning experience. After the session, there were many comments saying how enjoyable and engaging 3D models were. Conclusion: Through the puzzle element of the session, the students were challenged mentally to work out the anatomical features of the foot and ankle. The combined elements of the puzzle and the features of the 3D model assembly made the activity fun and conducive to active learning. The possibility of having fun was not something the students had considered before the session.

Abstract:AIM OF THE STUDY Biochemical diagnosis of fetuses with multiple malformations--an attempt to determine the frequency of prenatal Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome. Discussion on trends in prenatal diagnosis of non-specific multiple malformations disorders. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 117 fetal samples were obtained. They were analyzed with gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) method to assess the concentration of 7-dehydrocholesterol (7DHC) and 8-dehydrocholesterol (8DHC) in amniotic fluid samples and (or) to establish 7-dehydroestriol/estriol and 8-dehydropregnanetriol/pregnanetrio ratios in maternal urine. RESULTS In 4 cases Smith-Lemll-Opitz syndrome was confirmed. CONCLUSIONS Biochemical GC/MS sterol analyses of amniotic fluid or maternal urinary metabolites toward Smith- Lemli-Opitz syndrome, as cheap tests, should be performed in all pregnancies with suggestive ultrasound features (holoprosencephaly and(or) atrioventricular canal and(or) genital anomalies), especially when nuchal translucency is increased >3 mm, and after exclusion of chromosomal aberration in routine karyotyping or even arrayCGH.
Student Engagement Using HoloLens Mixed-Reality Technology in Human Anatomy Laboratories for Osteopathic Medical Students: an Instructional Model

Abstract:AbstractMixed-reality technology is a powerful tool used in healthcare and medical education to engage students in life-like scenarios. This blend of virtual and augmented reality images incorporates virtual projections with the real environment to allow real-time observation and interaction [1]. While this immersive technology offers advantages over cadaver dissections, it creates new challenges to keeping students engaged [2, 3]. Student engagement improves students’ commitment to learning, critical thinking, and motivation and results in successful course outcomes [4, 5]. This paper provides an activity model using the HoloLens mixed-reality technology to deliver human gross anatomy laboratory sessions to first-year osteopathic medical students. The activity was designed using Gagne’s model for instructional design and team-based learning to create an active learning model, which targets the behavioral, emotional, and cognitive dimensions of student engagement [6, 7]: behavioral engagement through autonomy and time on task, emotional engagement through providing the guiding exploration and narrative flow to accompany students’ visual experience, and cognitive engagement by incorporating team-based learning (TBL) and case-based learning (CBL). The instructional model also answers the call for a new type of virtual reality instructor and pedagogical strategy that addresses the unique challenges and increases student engagement with this new technology. The effectiveness of this classroom activity was assessed by observing students for indicators or behaviors of student engagement, which are discussed. Further studies are required to measure the extent to which these indicators were exhibited and compare student engagement with this mixed-reality to didactic cadaver-based laboratory sessions.
Prospective comparative study on enhancing geometrical mental representation and anatomical learning in medical students through modeling clay as an assessment tool

Abstract:While traditional anatomy education often emphasizes passive learning and rote memorization, it seldom employs constructivist theories that focus on active, hands-on experiences for effective learning. This study tests the hypothesis that tactile experiences with modeling clay enhance geometric mental representation more effectively than verbal descriptions. We examine the potential of clay modeling to reflect and evaluate students' mental representation of anatomical structures. Utilizing a prospective randomized, open, blind endpoint (PROBE) design, we engaged 36 participants divided into three groups: blind, visually impaired, and a control group. The primary outcome measure was the difference between post-touch score and pre-touch score, which gauged the efficacy of tactile intervention in enhancing the participants' capacity to mentally reconstruct a well-designed anatomical fiction structure. Scoring was executed using a double-blind double-evaluation methodology, positioning clay model reconstruction as both an objective reliable assessment and a pedagogical tool. The analysis demonstrated a pronounced improvement in mental representation of anatomical structures, particularly in spatial comprehension and detailed textural discernment, with the mean score soaring from 47.81 pre-touch to 85.09 post-touch. Distinct cognitive processing adaptations were evident across groups, with the blind group excelling in tactile acuity and the visually impaired group showing the most significant gains in spatial understanding post-intervention (Cohen's d = 2.74). The application of modeling clay as a tactile intervention tool can significantly improve the learning of anatomy among medical students. The study underscores the value of active, multisensory engagement and customized teaching strategies for effective anatomy education among this demographic.
Three-dimensional modeling in anatomy-Tool or terror?

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) modeling is a recent, innovative approach to teaching anatomy. There is little literature, however, to suggest how 3D modeling is best used to teach students and whether or not students can gain the same level of understanding as they might use more traditional, hands-on, teaching methods. This study evaluated the use of a 3D modeling software in both a flipped classroom curriculum and as an active learning tool in comparison to traditional, physical model-based teaching. Pre- and post-course content-based assessments were used to evaluate students' learning. Our findings indicated no significant difference between standard and flipped classroom learning; however, the students who used 3D modeling software as an active learning tool significantly underperformed students in the standard group (F(2,1060) = 112.43, p < 0.0001). These findings suggest that these technologies may not yet be useful as a primary means of instruction. Possible explanations may include cognitive overload in navigating the system, intrinsic limitations of the software, or other factors. Further development and research of these technologies is necessary prior to their adoption into teaching practices in anatomy.
Model construction by students within an integrated medical curriculum

Abstract:Background: This paper presents our experience of running a special study module (SSM) in the second semester of the first year of our 5-year medical programme, worth 10 per cent of that semester's assessment, in which each student constructs an individually selected model illustrating a specific aspect of the teaching course. Method: Each student conceptualises and develops his or her model, to clarify a specific aspect of medical teaching. The use of non-traditional materials in construction is strongly encouraged. Six weeks later, each student presents their model for assessment by four first-year academic teaching staff. The student is quizzed about the concepts that he or she presents, the mode of construction and the materials used. Results: The students' projects broadly cover the disciplines of physiology, biochemistry and anatomy, but are somewhat biased towards anatomy. Students spend on average about 14 hours planning and building their models, at a time when they are busy with other teaching activities. The marks awarded for the projects closely follow a normal distribution. A survey suggests that most students enjoy the exercise and feel that it has enhanced their learning and understanding. Discussion: It is clear from the wide variety of different topics, models and materials that students are highly resourceful in their modelling. Creative activity does not generally play a substantial part in medical education, but is of considerable importance. The development of their models stimulates, informs and educates the constructors, and provides a teaching resource for later use in didactic teaching.

Abstract:Students often struggle to learn material that requires extensive memorization (e.g., neuroanatomy) in courses like Sensation & Perception and Cognitive Neuroscience, though such foundational material is integral to understanding more complex concepts in the course. The "Creative Project" (CP) assignment is designed to engage students in learning this material. Alone or in small teams, students generate creative work on neuroanatomy content. Capitalizing on principles learning theories as well as universal design and inclusive pedagogy, the CP addresses the primary barriers to learning this content. Across two semesters, 70 students submitted a variety of projects: animations, songs, videos, children's books, activity books (e.g., crossword, word search & mazes), 3D models, poems, board games, online games, poetry, and visual artwork. Alumni/ae co-authors of this manuscript provide our feedback and reflection on this assignment from when we completed it. We found the project fun and engaging. We enjoyed the freedom and control, though some of us also found the open-endedness of the assignment to be daunting. We all recommended it be assigned in more courses, even outside of Neuroscience. Here, we describe how the CP can be used in a variety of courses, and what issues to consider when assigning it.

Abstract:Student-centered learning of biology concepts through hands-on tactile approaches is one of the important themes in inclusive and equitable STEM teaching. In our article, we describe the development of clay Velcro origami models for students to explore the molecular and cellular process of muscle fiber formation. We repurposed dollar store items and recyclable items used to construct a variety of textures in the clay Velcro model of early and late stages of muscle fiber formation. These hands-on activities are linked to the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) on using a model to explore the cell and structure changes to form a multinucleated muscle fiber or the formation of a syncytium. Finally, we also illustrate how students can utilize the clay Velcro model to make predictions if key molecules in cell fusion do not work during the process of syncytial formation during muscle fiber development.

Human assembloid model of the ascending neural sensory pathway

Abstract:The ascending somatosensory pathways convey crucial information about pain, touch, itch, and body part movement from peripheral organs to the central nervous system. Despite a significant need for effective therapeutics modulating pain and other somatosensory modalities, clinical translation remains challenging, which is likely related to species-specific features and the lack of in vitro models to directly probe and manipulate this polysynaptic pathway. Here, we established human ascending somatosensory assembloids (hASA)– a four-part assembloid completely generated from human pluripotent stem cells that integrates somatosensory, spinal, diencephalic, and cortical organoids to model the human ascending spinothalamic pathway. Transcriptomic profiling confirmed the presence of key cell types in this circuit. Rabies tracing and calcium imaging showed that sensory neurons connected with dorsal spinal cord projection neurons, which ascending axons further connected to thalamic neurons. Following noxious chemical stimulation, single neuron calcium imaging of intact hASA demonstrated coordinated response, while four-part concomitant extracellular recordings and calcium imaging revealed synchronized activity across the assembloid. Loss of the sodium channel SCN9A, which causes pain insensitivity in humans, disrupted synchrony across the four-part hASA. Taken together, these experiments demonstrate the ability to functionally assemble the essential components of the human sensory pathway. These findings could both accelerate our understanding of human sensory circuits and facilitate therapeutic development.

Abstract:The neural activity of the brain is intimately coupled to the dynamics of the body. Yet how our hierarchical sensorimotor system dynamically orchestrates the generation of movement while adapting to incoming sensory information remains unclear. In mice, the extent of encoding from posture to muscle-level features across the motor (M1) and primary sensory forelimb (S1) cortex and how these are shaped during learning are unknown. To address this, we built a large-scale model that captures hypothesized neural computations and use this to control a novel 50-muscle model of the adult forelimb amenable to studying motor control and learning in a physics simulation environment. We show that we can imitate 3D limb kinematics collected during a joystick task by solving inverse kinematics and deriving a sensorimotor control model that drives the same actions. Using the internal computations from our model, we find that populations of layer 2/3 M1 and S1 neurons encode high-level position, and lower-level muscle space and proprioceptive dynamics. During adaptive learning, these functionally distinct neurons map onto specific computational motifs. Strikingly, S1 neurons more prominently encode sensorimotor prediction errors, and M1 and S1 support optimal state estimation. Moreover, we find that neural latent dynamics differentially change in S1 vs. M1 during this within-session learning. Together, our results provide a new model of how neural dynamics in cortex enables adaptive learning.

Anatomy of the physical examination: A small group learning approach for increasing engagement and learning in a medical gross anatomy course

Abstract:The ability to perform and interpret the physical examination requires an understanding of human anatomy and how to apply that content in the clinical setting. Previous work has shown that students understand and retain information more effectively when they are actively engaged in the learning process and it is clearly linked to other coursework and their future needs. We developed a series of learning activities, based on the general physical examination, designed to enhance engagement and encourage durable learning of anatomical principles that are important in performing and interpreting the physical examination. Activities were designed for use in small group settings with faculty supervision and input as needed. We describe these activities and provide comments from students regarding the perceived value of these learning activities. Students reported that the applied anatomy learning activities were engaging and aided in their learning of human anatomy. Additionally, students appreciated the connection between the applied anatomy activities and the skills being learned in concurrent coursework focusing on the physical examination. We observed that applied human anatomy exercises modeled after components of the general physical examination and embedded in an anatomy course enhanced student engagement and helped students appreciate the importance of anatomical principles. We note that sensitivity to and acceptance of personal preferences and religious matters must be shown when using learning activities that involve close physical interactions to teach anatomical topics.

Abstract:Descriptive and functional anatomy is one of the most important sciences for kinesiology students. Anatomy learning requires spatial and motor imagery abilities. Learning anatomy is complex when teaching methods and instructional tools do not appropriately develop spatial and motor imagery abilities. Recent technological developments such as three-dimensional (3D) digital tools allow to overcome those difficulties, especially when 3D tools require strong interactions with the learners. Besides interactive digital tools, embodied learning or learning in motion is an effective method for a wide variety of sciences including anatomy. The aim of this study was to explore the impact of combining movement execution with 3D animation visualization on anatomy learning in a real classroom teaching context. To do so, the results of two groups of kinesiology students during three official assessments were compared. The experimental group (n = 60) learned functional anatomy by combining movement execution with traditional knowledge acquisition (e.g., 3D animations visualization, problem-based learning exercises). The control group (n = 61) had the same material but did not execute the movements during problem-solving exercises. Although no differences were found between both groups on early and mid-semester examinations, significant difference appeared at the end of the semester with an advantage for the experimental group. This exploratory study suggests that embodied learning is beneficial in improving functional anatomy learning. Therefore, it would be interesting to integrate such type of pedagogical approach within the kinesiology curriculum.

Students' illustrations of the human nervous system as a formative assessment tool

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to explore students' knowledge and learning of the human nervous system (HNS) in an introductory undergraduate Human Anatomy and Physiology course. Classroom observations, demographic data, a preinstructional unit test with drawings, and a postinstructional unit test with drawings were used to identify students' overall knowledge and learning during the unit of study. Quantitative and qualitative analysis indicate that students have an initially poor understanding of the nervous system with many prevailing alternative conceptions. These alternative conceptions include both structural and functional components and often incorporate colloquial use of language. Findings reveal students include the heart as a major component of the HNS, a reflex arc illustrated by the action rather than structure, and types of neurons (unipolar, bipolar, or multipolar) differentiated by charge or number of cell bodies rather than structural arrangement. Classroom instruction coupled with concurrent laboratory participation provided experiences for students to overcome some of their alternative conceptions. The finding of this research suggest that instructors should be aware of the students' prevailing alternative conceptions prior to instruction and that use of drawings as a formative assessment tool is an excellent way to collect such information.

The Use of Model Making in Teaching Human Organ Systems

Abstract:Teaching science is a dynamic process. Along with the advancement of technology, the methodology of the teaching process must be innovative to adapt to the current trends of education. Teachers then are prompted with perseverance to the task of providing innovative answers to modern need of the science curriculum. This quasi - experimental study aimed to determine the effect of model making as a tool in teaching selected human body systems. The study was conducted to a total of 102 university freshmen enrolled in Biological Sciences. Pre-test, post-test and interview guide were conducted to gather the data. Analysis on the pre-test and post-test scores revealed a significant improvement on the performance of the students. Furthermore, the group when exposed to the model making activity showed a significant mean difference between the pre-test and the post-test scores. The feedback of the students indicated that the model making activity made the learning process more challenging and interesting. Results showed that with model making, the teaching of selected human organ systems is effective. Model making, therefore, could be an alternative teaching technique to enhance students’ creative thinking and better understanding of the concept.Keywords: Education Model Making, Teaching Technique, Human Organ Systems, Quasi-experimental Design, Philippines

Abstract:The aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR) is a ligand-dependent transcriptional regulator of several genes including the cytochrome P4501 (CYP1) family as well as genes encoding factors involved in cell growth and differentiation. In mice, several polymorphic forms of the AHR are known, some of which have altered affinity for toxic and carcinogenic ligands. Remarkably little genetic variation has been detected in the human AHR gene. In studies on human AHR, Kawajiri et al. (Pharmacogenetics 1995; 5:151-158) reported a variation at codon 554 that results in an amino acid change from arginine to lysine; the frequency of the variant allele in a Japanese population (n = 277) was 0.43. We investigated the Lys554 allele in 386 individuals of various ethnic origins and found the frequency to be: 0.58 in Ivory Coast Africans (n = 58); 0.53 in a mixed African group (n = 20); 0.39 in Caribbean-Africans (n = 55); 0.32 in Canadian Chinese (n = 41); 0.14 in North American Indians (n = 47); 0.12 in French Canadian Caucasians (n = 20); 0.11 in a mixed ethnicity North American group (n = 45); 0.09 in Canadian Inuits (n = 22); and 0.07 in German Caucasians (n = 78). We expressed the human Lys554 allele in an in-vitro transcription-translation system and found that the receptor bearing the R554L substitution had an equivalent ability to that of the wild-type receptor to bind to a dioxin-responsive element following treatment with 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD). The Lys554 allele also was equivalent to the wild-type receptor at stimulating CYP1A1 mRNA expression when transfected into TCDD-treated receptor-deficient mouse Hepa-1 cells. It is not yet known if any of the wide variations in allele frequency at codon 554 are related to ethnic differences in susceptibility to adverse effects of environmental chemicals.

Abstract:Neuroanatomy education benefits from cadaveric specimens, yet challenges with access, cost, and health concerns exist. Virtual Dissection Tables (VDTs) offer digital alternatives to traditional cadaveric learning. This article evaluates the pedagogical value of VDTs in undergraduate neuroanatomy education. While VDTs, primarily Anatomage, offer interactive 3D cadaveric images and customization options, research on their impact on neuroanatomy learning outcomes remain limited. Existing studies suggest comparable knowledge retention between VDTs and cadaveric learning, with varying effects on student satisfaction. Investigations of non-exam-based neuroanatomy assessments, however, are scarce. This study presents a case study using VDTs as the basis for a neuroscience assignment report, exploring its construction, and evaluating its strengths, and weaknesses through a student survey. Implemented in an advanced neuroscience course, the assignment involves analyzing 3D reconstructed MRI scans of neuropathological conditions displayed on the VDT. The task requires students to collate, analyze, and predict symptoms based on the pathology observed, aligning their findings with neuroscience literature. This innovative approach aims to enhance research and academic writing skills while expanding the use of VDTs beyond traditional assessment formats in neuroscience education. We found that the case-study format benefited students' neuroanatomy learning and application ability. Further studies should be conducted, however, to understand the effect of VDT use on learning outcomes in case study contexts.
