Abstract:Medical students must be adept at critical thinking to successfully meet the learning objectives of their preclinical coursework. To encourage student success on assessments, the course director of a first-year medical physiology course emphasized the use of learning objectives that were explicitly aligned with formative assessments in class. The course director introduced the physiology discipline, learning objectives, and evidence-based methods of studying to students on the first day of class. Thereafter, class sessions started with a review of the learning objectives for that session and included active learning opportunities such as retrieval practice. The instructor provided short answer formative assessments aligned with the learning objectives, intended to help the students apply and integrate the concepts. Midsemester, students received a link to an online survey with questions on studying habits, class attendance, and student engagement. After finals, students were invited to participate in focus groups about their class experience. A qualitative researcher moderated focus groups, recorded responses, and analyzed the narrative data. Of 175 students, 95 submitted anonymous online surveys. Student engagement was significantly correlated with in-person class attendance (r = 0.26, T = 2.5, P = 0.01) and the completion of open-ended formative assessments (r = 0.33, T = 3.3, P = 0.001). Focus groups were held via videoconference. From the class, 14 students participated in 4 focus groups; focus group participants were mostly women (11 of 14) and mostly in-class attendees (13 of 14). The students in this sample valued critical thinking but misunderstood expectations on exams and few students used learning objectives to study.NEW & NOTEWORTHY We introduced formative assessments and study techniques to first-year medical students in a physiology course. Mastery of learning objectives was emphasized as the key to success. We asked how they studied physiology through an anonymous online survey and focus group interviews. The students enjoyed physiology but had difficulty with exam expectations. Helping students use learning objectives to guide their study may lead to improved exam scores. It may also help administrators meet their curriculum goals.

Abstract:Although previous studies have demonstrated that exogenous administration of oxytocin (OT) enhances sexual receptivity in female rats, there is no compelling evidence that endogenous OT has a physiological role in the regulation of female sexual behavior. In the current studies we centrally administered d(CH2)5[Tyr(Me)2Thr4,Tyr-NH2(9)]ornithine vasotocin (or OTA), a selective OT receptor antagonist, to block endogenous OT in ovariectomized females primed with different levels of gonadal steroids. After OTA administration (100-1000 ng), females primed with estradiol benzoate (EB; 1 microgram) and progesterone (P; 250 micrograms) showed reductions in both receptive and proceptive behaviors. These effects of OTA were also evident, though less striking, in females primed with higher doses of EB (10 micrograms) and P (250 micrograms), but significant OTA effects were absent in females primed with EB (10 micrograms) alone. Thus, OTA appeared to attenuate P's facilitation of sexual behavior. Surprisingly, these behavioral effects of OTA administration were not apparent immediately, but emerged only when OTA was given with P 4-6 h before behavioral testing. To determine if these delayed, but lasting, behavioral effects were associated with OTA occupancy of the OT receptor, we measured OT receptor binding ex vivo using receptor autoradiography. Six hours after intracerebroventricular administration of OTA (1000 ng), OT receptor binding was reduced at least 75% in the ventromedial nucleus of the hypothalamus relative to control levels of binding. Thus, those OT receptors previously implicated in the regulation of sexual receptivity appear to be significantly blocked throughout the period of OTA's behavioral effects. Together, these studies lend support to the hypothesis that endogenous OT has a physiological role in the regulation of female sexual behavior.

Abstract:1-Chloro-2,3-diphenylcyclopropenium ion was found to be a very efficient organocatalyst (3 mol% loading) for liquid phase Beckmann rearrangement of various ketoximes to the corresponding amides/lactams within 2 h in acetonitrile at reflux temperature. This is the first example of the application of the cyclopropenium ion as a catalyst, which opens up a new aspect of the synthetic utility of aromatic cation based catalysis.
A cross-disciplinary approach to learning medical physiology and behavioral skills involving drama students performing as simulated patients

Abstract:The early years of physiology education in medical curricula provide unique challenges. As well as inculcating concepts that are seen as difficult, modern curricula require that students learn in context in case-based learning courses. Additionally, regulating bodies stress that the soft skills of compassion, communication, and empathy are embedded throughout curricula. This has driven work in our organization involving drama and final-year medicine students during which they collaborate in realistic simulations of doctor/patient interactions. We adapted this transdisciplinary approach to second-year physiology tutorials. This emphasized the holistic importance of physiology to patient care, while also embedding "human factors" skills from the very earliest stages of the curriculum. After preparing by attending acting classes based on aspects of Konstantin Stanislavski's "System," the authors supervised tutorials in which drama students participated in a "physiology of hypofertility" session for second-year medical students, playing a 34-year-old woman with premature menopause (or their partner). Opinion (from all students) was evaluated by Likert questionnaires (which included open questions). A focus group of drama students was also interviewed, and the conversation was recorded for thematic analysis. Positive Likert scores were recorded for the authenticity of the tutorials, skills development, fostering empathy, and motivating students to improve. All participants evaluated the tutorial as highly enjoyable. These scores are reflected in positive open commentary on the questionnaires and in the focus group interviews. The results suggest that even basic science tutorials give opportunities for interdisciplinary study and enhancement of behavioral skills while gaining enthusiastic student acceptance.NEW & NOTEWORTHY This work details how physiology tutorials for early years medical students are transformed by taking the clinical case off the two-dimensional page and instead having the case scenario acted by drama students. This adds context and authenticity. The benefits are twofold: emphasizing the importance of physiology to the budding clinician and embedding empathy and compassion from the earliest points in a clinician's career.

Abstract:Background: Understanding of human physiology is critical for clinical practice and disease management. Escalating the teaching-learning method to improve conceptual knowledge may help the students to apply their knowledge in clinical scenarios. The present study was conducted to teach the use of concept mapping as a learning strategy to foster meaningful learning in physiology, compare its impact as a learning tool with traditional methods on meaningful learning, assess the cognitive gain, and find student's perception regarding concept mapping. Materials and methods: The interventional study was conducted on first-year MBBS students. Depending upon marks obtained in previous internal assessments, the students were classified into "rapid learners" (RL) and "potential learners" (PL). By simple random sampling technique, both groups were divided into interventional (concept mapping) and control groups (question-answer discussion). After a pretest, all students had a lecture on glomerular filtration. The assignment was given to the interventional group to prepare a concept map on glomerular filtration, and question-answer were discussed for control groups. A surprise posttest was conducted after 2-3 days. Result: In our study, all four groups showed significant differences in the pretest and posttest scores using a paired t-test (P < 0.05). The mean score of gain in learning, raw gain (G0), absolute learning gain, relative learning gain, and average normalized gain compared between the interventional group and controls group showed statistically significant performance improvement in both RL and PL groups. Conclusion: The concept mapping strategy was more efficacious than the question-answer discussion. Concept mapping is an impactful learning tool to improve cognitive gain and potential pedagogical strategy to foster meaningful learning in physiology students.
Flipped classroom in neurophysiology: performance analysis of a system focusing on intrinsic students' motivation

Abstract:Introduction: Teaching methodologies promoting active learning result in higher-order knowledge application, a desirable outcome in health disciplines like Physiology. Flipped-classroom (FC) promotes active learning and engagement in the classroom. Although specialized research keeps accumulating, the advantages of FC for improving academic outcome and ultimately patient care remain controversial and open to further analysis. Objective: This study evaluates the benefits of applying FC to the Neurophysiology module of a Human Physiology course. Methods:We compare final grades of students exposed to standard lecturing (five-years) vs. FC (six-years), and study the FC impact on student motivation, study time and rewards. Differing from conventional FC, we performed no pre-class/in-class assessments, relying on the students' internal motivation to experience our FC model. A printed student workbook was designed as pre-class material for each session. Reading times respect the expected daily study time of students in our system. Results and discussion: Concerning academic performance, our long-term study reports a significant increase in average scores for FC groups. Overall, students get better scores in multiple choice tests than in problem-solving questions. A more detailed analysis uncovers that our FC model helps students to obtain better scores, reducing variability in performance due to assessment methods. Based on our open-ended survey questions, most students rate the FC environment and in-class activities positively and perceive a positive effect of FC on teachers' performance. An objective automatic Sentiment analysis of open-ended answers reveals that FC is positively appreciated by students, associating positive perceptions to their understanding of physiological concepts, and negative evaluations to their time management.
Impact of Deep Reading in Case-Based Learning in Graduate Physiology Students

Abstract:Introduction: In universities, a traditional lecture style has shown to be less effective in helping students learn compared to a more active approach to teaching and learning. Previous research has stated that passive learning triggers a shift to a more superficial style of learning that is associated with a lower level of cognitive skill. Active learning is defined as activities that students do to construct knowledge and understanding. An active learning concept known as deep reading has been suggested to improve academic performance. In recent studies, deep reading was utilized in graduate science courses and was shown to enhance reading and comprehension skills as well as increasing overall academic ability. Objective: In this study, the aim was to assess how deep reading impacted a student’s self-perception of their understanding of course material in a graduate-level physiology course. Methods: Over a six-week period, 23 graduate physiology students participated in weekly deep reading assignments that correlated with the material taught in class that week. At the end of each week, students filled out an evaluation form indicating how they felt their assigned reading impacted their understanding of the material taught in class. Results: Results indicated that almost 70% of the class agreed that deep reading helped in understanding the course material. Student feedback data showed frequent use of the words “understanding,” “enjoyed,” “relevant,” and “helped.” Students who spent between 0-2 hours per week deep reading gave positive feedback. Individuals who spent more than 2 hours per week indicated negative feedback and perceived that deep reading counteracted their understanding of course material. Conclusion: The data implies that student understanding of material was improved with 0-2 hours of deep reading per week. More than 2 hours of deep reading per week had a countereffect. Excess time spent reading could have caused students to lose sight of the important concepts from the articles and thereby eliciting a negative effect and more confusion. Some, 1-2hrs, seemed to be helpful, however, more had a detrimental effect on learning. Future studies should aim to have more consistency in the difficulty of reading materials between students. Addition of comprehensive reading questions could also be implemented to assess student understanding. The impact of the pointless system of grading in an undergraduate physiology class

Abstract:The pointless system of assessment is a relatively new concept and few papers have been published demonstrating its usefulness in higher education, particularly in STEM classes. The current study was undertaken to determine the usefulness of this pedagogy in assisting students to master physiological concepts. The hypothesis is that students will respond positively to this assessment and show improved mastery of concepts. All assignments and tests require written answers that involve explanation of concepts and mechanisms. All work, except exams, can be revised, and detailed feedback and rubrics are given for each assignment. Student work is rated as exceeds, meets or approaches expectations. Class work is divided into categories (writing, exams, case studies, lab handouts, lab reports) and each category is rated as exceeds, meets or approaches expectations depending on the overall quality of the work in each category. Final grades are awarded based on a matrix of how many categories are rated at each level as shown in Table 1. [Table: see text] This approach was used in spring 2021 under IRB# LUIRB03022021SS with a physiology class while students were remote. In 2021, all the students revised some of their work and learned from their revisions as evidenced by improved first drafts in subsequent work. Students seemed to master concepts better with this system as 85% of the students scored exceeds expectations on comprehensive mid-term and final exams. Student comments on a reflective writing exercise indicated that most of the students liked this approach despite the perceived increase in workload. Students indicated that they believed they learned the concepts better and they were less concerned about trying to remember minutia. This approach is currently being used for the second time during the spring 2023 semester in a face-to-face physiology course. One goal for this year is to see if the outcomes are similar in a face-to-face class. The first student assignments are due shortly, so summary data for this semester is not yet available. Flipped classroom as an effective educational tool in teaching physiology for first-year undergraduate medical students

Abstract:Background: Flipped classroom (FC) teaching has recently received much attention in medical education. It has been introduced in our institution for 2 years, and we studied the effectiveness and perception of FC teaching in Physiology for first-year undergraduate students. Materials and methods: In total, 150 out of 250 first-year MBBS students participated in this study. They were divided into two groups, each consisting of 75 students. Multiple topics in the cardiovascular system were taught to the students by employing traditional classroom (TC) didactic lectures in group A. The same topics were handled using FC in group B, where the students came prepared with the study materials the facilitator provided before class commenced. A well-planned classroom discussion with a formative assessment was conducted at the end. The test scores were compared between the two groups by using an independent t-test. A feedback report was obtained from both groups' students to analyze the teaching-learning methods' accomplishment. Result: FC teaching scores were significantly higher than the traditional lecture among all students. Feedback results showed that 93% of students agreed that the resource materials, group discussions, videos, and exercise tools used in FC were very useful; 95% of students agreed that it provided a good understanding and better appreciation of basic science knowledge in health and disease, and 91% reported that it was well-organized with good interaction, clear explanation, relevant information, and encouraged critical thinking with active student participation. Conclusion: FC proves to be an effective, interesting, and motivating teaching-learning module. It enhances communication skills, clinical thinking, interaction, and active student participation.
Integrated laboratory classes to learn physiology in a psychology degree: impact on student learning and experience

Abstract:Physiology is a fundamental discipline to be studied in most Health Science studies including Psychology. Physiology content is perceived by students as rather difficult, who may lack vision on how to relate it with their professional training. Therefore, identifying novel active and more engaging pedagogical strategies for teaching physiology to psychology students may help to fill this gap. In this pilot study, we used the PBL methodology developed around a clinical case to evaluate psychology students’ experience and learning in two laboratory classes modalities. The aim of this study was to compare the undergraduates’ preference for laboratory classes taught either independently (cohort 1, n = 87 students) or integrated into the PBL-oriented clinical case (cohort 2, n = 92 students) for which laboratory classes were transformed into Integrated Laboratory Classes (ILCs). The students’ academic performance was also evaluated to look for quantitative differences between cohorts. We found similar overall academic scores for the Physiology course between cohorts. Interestingly, when we compared the academic scores obtained in the theoretical content from each cohort, we found a significant improvement ( p < 0.05) in cohort 2 where the students achieved better results as compared to cohort 1. A subset of students was asked to fill a questionnaire assessment on their experience and found that 78.9% of them preferred integrated laboratory classes over laboratory classes alone. They consistently reported a better understanding of the theoretical content and the value they gave to ILCs for learning. In conclusion, our pilot study suggests that integrating laboratory classes into PBL-oriented clinical contexts help to retain core physiology contents and it can be considered as an engaging learning activity worth implementing in Psychology teaching.

Foundations in physiology: an introductory course using the core concepts

Abstract:As one element of an extensive revision to program curriculum, the Integrative Physiology and Health Science Department at a small, private, liberal arts institution developed a novel introductory course for the major, focusing specifically on the "core concepts" of physiology. Intended to provide the initial step in explicit scaffolding for student success and, ultimately, transfer of knowledge across the curriculum, development and assessment of the first offering of the course were completed. In the fall of 2021, IPH 131: Foundations in Physiology was launched. The specific core concepts covered were as follows: causality, scientific reasoning, physics/chemistry, structure-function, homeostasis, flow-down gradients, cell membrane, energy, cell-cell communication, and interdependence/integration. To assess student learning, the Phys-MAPS (Measuring Achievement and Progress in Science for Physiology) assessment tool was administered to students during the first week of class and again in the final week of the semester. Average scores revealed significant learning gains by the end of the semester (0.497 ± 0.058 vs. 0.538 ± 0.108 correct as a proportion of the total number of questions, P = 0.0096). While a modest gain in learning outcomes, these data provide early evidence that a course specifically addressing the core concepts of physiology can be an appropriate introduction to the physiology curriculum.NEW & NOTEWORTHY This article will detail the development and implementation of an introductory course using the "core concepts." Specifics of course design, assessment, and challenges encountered will be presented for those interested in this approach.
Using Near-Peer Teaching to Address Concepts of Cystic Fibrosis in Undergraduate Medical Learners

Abstract:Introduction: Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a high-yield undergraduate medical education topic that lends itself to adaptability of content. We used a CF case paired with activities to deliver content in a near-peer teaching session. First-year (M1) and second-year (M2) medical students contributed acquired knowledge of protein structure and obstructive lung disease, respectively, to generate a concept map and address discussion questions. Methods: Combined groups of M1 and M2 students reviewed a CF case and a concept map prompt. For 30 minutes, they created a concept map describing connections between molecular biology and clinical manifestations. We summarized by reviewing concept maps and discussion questions. The efficacy of the session was determined by comparing exam performance of class attenders and nonattenders (M2) and performance on questions related and unrelated to the exercise (M1). We also determined students' perception of the session and incorporation of additional core competencies. Results: M2 students' performance was 3.8% higher (p = .296) and M1 students' performance was 1.8% higher (p = .286) than their respective controls. Students commented positively on the exercise and perceived more than one core competency as part of the session. Discussion: Although there was no significant improvement in exam performance, this curriculum used near-peer teaching to reinforce previously learned material and apply recently acquired material in an engaging format without detriment to either group. This method can be adapted to different learner groups and provides an opportunity to deliver and assess other core medical competencies.

Abstract:Objective To explore the feasibility of transform from the sardine like cramming to the teaching method with provision of necessary conditions. The medical students in class97 were picked in random for the trial. New learning materials suitable for self learning compiled by our department of pathophysiology were distributed into study to test the validity of the inductive approach. The students in this group, after self learning the meaterials, were then examined and their records were compared with those in the control group. 31 of 117 volunteer students in the trial participate the examination, and 54.8% of them obtained grades excellent or good (≥80 points), with a record bar surpassing the 608 students of class96 and 560 students of class97 (ordinary classes as control groups). Students can master the basic knowledge of pathophysiology if proper learning materials are available, on condition they have enough time and good self learning habits supplemented by necessary lectures and coaching.

Abstract:Phthalocyanines (Pcs) and naphthalocyanines (Ncs) are being extensively studied as photosensitizers for photodynamic therapy (PDT) of cancer. They strongly absorb clinically useful red light, with maxima around 670 nm and 770 nm respectively. Chelated with appropriate diamagnetic metal ions, they exhibit high triplet yields and long triplet lifetimes. Energy transfer from the triplet dye to ground-state oxygen to yield singlet oxygen appears to be the main photosensitizing pathway in biological systems. Underivatized Pcs and Ncs can be incorporated in liposomes for in vivo administration. Sulphonation renders the dyes water soluble but also enhances dimerization to yield photochemically inactive aggregates. Tumour retention and cell membrane penetration of the dyes are strongly affected by the polarity of the macrocycle as well as the nature of the central metal ion and axial ligands. Among the sulphonated dyes, amphiphilic mono- and disulphonated derivatives exhibit particularly good cell membrane-penetrating properties, although the more highly sulphonated dyes show better tumour retention in vivo. At least in vitro, Pc dyes are more photoactive than the corresponding Nc dyes, which probably reflects the lower photostability of the latter.

Abstract:Aim. The objective of this article is to describe our innovative competency-based approach to teaching nursing students about the autonomic nervous system (ANS). Background. Nurse educators require resources about pedagogical approaches related to ANS instruction. Design and Methods. We implemented an approach based on Kolb’s Experiential Learning Theory, which was piloted in several nursing courses that spanned undergraduate and graduate levels of education. Results. We organized content according to three core ANS concepts: receptors and ligands; neurotransmission; and ANS divisions and reflexes. After students demonstrated mastery of these concepts, we introduced active-learning exercises, such as case studies, interactive games, concept mapping, and simulation-based education. This approach layered clinically-relevant information upon the core concepts. We leveraged student feedback by adding historical, social science, and literary examples into lectures because students reported how this approach made the material engaging. Conclusion. Our approach guides students toward a conceptual understanding of the ANS to support critical thinking and enhance nursing skills, such as interpreting physiologic signals, titrating vasoactive medications, and recognizing ANS disorders.

Abstract:The flipped classroom (FC) teaching has been increasingly employed in medical education. Many studies have shown this “student-centered” pedagogical model improves students' overall achievement in the course, with students showing more motivation and better self-directed learning skills when compared to the traditional classroom teaching. However, most of the previous studies have been evaluating the short-term effects of FC teaching conducted upon completion of the course. The retention of the promotion and the long-term effects on learning of students' subsequent courses deserve further attention and evaluation. By adopting and running FC teaching in the whole course of physiology, this study aimed to determine the short-term impact of FC teaching on students' learning of physiology course and also the long-term influences in students' learning of follow-up medical curriculums within 18 months after the completion of physiology course. 119 sophomore students majoring in clinical medicine from Central South University were recruited and they were assigned randomly into two groups: the control group ( n =61) who received the traditional lecture (TL) teaching, and the experimental group ( n =58), who received the FC teaching. In this study, students' final exam scores were used to assess their learning effectiveness and an independent samples t -test was conducted to compare scores between the two groups. Our study showed that FC teaching significantly improved the learning outcome of physiology in the experimental group compared with the control group ( P = 0.0001) without obvious impact on the learning of other subjects conducted in the same period of time. Moreover, our results also demonstrated the long-term benefit of FC teaching, with students from the experimental group scoring higher in pathophysiology ( P = 0.006), pathology ( P = 0.029), pharmacology ( P = 0.0089), diagnostics ( P = 0.01) and internal medicine ( P = 0.0004) than those from the control group. The study results indicate that FC is a promising teaching approach to increase students' learning effectiveness in physiology course, and the long-term effects of FC facilitate the learning of the follow-up medical courses. Furthermore, this study also demonstrates that although the time investment on physiology is increased by FC teaching, it does not weaken students' learning of other courses conducted in the same period of time.

Abstract:Blended learning is a learning approach that combines face-to-face classroom lectures and e-learning. It has grown rapidly to be commonly used in medical institutions, especially in the local medical universities where there is lack of qualified teachers and instructional materials. Massive open online courses (MOOCs) are the latest revolution in e-learning and provides learners with access to quality educational resources. Nevertheless, there is seldom reports concerning how to effectively integrate MOOCs into blended learning in local universities, as well as the evaluation of knowledge outcomes. In order to achieve this aim, a blended learning approach was carried out in teaching pathophysiology in Guilin Medical University. This blended learning model was based on combination of Chinese University MOOC with case based learning (CBL), as an alternative to conventional learning. The medical students in the 2017 and 2018 classes received the blended learning method, while the medical students in the 2015 class received the traditional classroom instruction. The results showed that students in the 2017 and 2018 performed significantly better than students in the 2015 class at mid-term exam and the final exam. Perception surveys also revealed that both students and teachers had positive attitude toward blended learning, and they shared similar viewpoints of blended learning. A large proportion of students and teachers believed that the blended learning enhanced students' motivation to learn independently, improved their time management skills, and allowed them to experience personalized learning. Also, most students and teachers recognized that Chinese University MOOC provided substantial educational resources suitable for their need. In addition, teachers indicated that the blended learning improved student learning quality, facilitated interaction between teachers and students, and helped them to establish a student-centered model in teaching pathophysiology. Overall, the blended learning method that combines Chinese University MOOC with CBL is effective in enhancing students' achievement and motivation in pathophysiology than the traditional learning method, and helps to strengthen the cultivation of talent in local medical universities.
Development and Implementation of a Microlearning Curriculum of Physiology Formulas for Postgraduate Clinical Fellows in Pediatric Critical Care Medicine

Abstract:Postgraduate medical education in clinical settings poses many challenges secondary to the large volume of knowledge to be acquired, competing clinical responsibilities, and fatigue. To address these challenges, a microlearning curriculum using flipped classroom methodologies was created to facilitate the mastering of fundamental physiology formulas by pediatric critical care medicine fellows. Forty physiology formulas were distilled into 5-minute microlearning sessions. Fellows were provided the weekly formula and encouraged to self-study prior to the face-to-face learning. The 5-minute session took place at the beginning of a regularly scheduled clinical care conference where normal values, explanatory diagrams, and board-like questions were discussed. A faculty or fellow facilitator then provided a more in-depth explanation and shared clinical pearls related to the formula. Following the session, an e-mail summarizing the learning points was sent. The curriculum was well received by fellows and faculty. Over 5 years, the curriculum evolved through phases of active development, implementation, minor modifications, transition to a virtual platform, shift to senior fellow-led instruction, and harmonization with other curricular activities. Engagement and sustainability were addressed with a fully flipped classroom, where senior fellows served as teachers to junior fellows. Microlearning in a multimodal manner is an excellent method for teaching busy postgraduate clinical trainees fundamental physiology formulas that underpin pediatric critical care decision-making. The gradual transition from individual learning to a flipped classroom taught by peers with faculty support was well tolerated and consistent with adult learning theories. The transition was essential to ensure the sustainability of the curriculum.

Abstract:Learning physiology is challenging for students. The nature of the discipline, which includes many complex mechanisms, makes the subject complicated. Furthermore, the length of the textbooks and the usual multiple-choice tests, which prioritize memorizing instead of understanding, tend to discourage the students. Therefore, different pedagogical strategies have been adopted to motivate and facilitate the learning of physiology. In this sense, many pedagogical strategies have been using art as a tool to motivate and induce students to self-learn. Besides, art as a pedagogical tool has also been shown to be important in developing self-assurance, self-pride, as well as the development of critical-thinking skills in the students. Here, we incorporate a new practice of self-directed teaching and learning, which involves artwork interpretation in a physiological context. This extra-classroom activity integrating art and physiology (The PhysioArt Project) improved students'engagement, increasing their interest in the discipline by providing a more creative, pleasurable, and enthusiastic atmosphere for enjoying and learning physiology, which also has contributed to the development of creativity, critical thinking, and students' self-assurance. Interestingly, the benefits elicited by The PhysioArt Project activities have also helped us to enhance the student-professor relationship, inducing a more humanized education.

Abstract:Physiology is an important field for students to gain a better understanding of biological mechanisms. Yet, many students often find it difficult to learn from lectures, resulting in poor retention. Here, we focus on the utilization of a learning workshop model to teach students at different levels ranging from middle school to undergraduate. We specifically designed a workshop to teach students about mitochondria endoplasmic reticulum contact (MERC) sites. The workshop was implemented for middle-school students in a laboratory setting that incorporated a pre-test to gauge prior knowledge, instructional time, hands-on activities, interactive learning from experts, and a post-test. We observed that the students remained engaged during the session relied on interactive methods, teamed with their peers to complete tasks, and delighted in the experience. Implications for the design of future physiological workshops are further offered.
