Abstract:Water quality is one of the key determinants for assessing effectiveness and success of water diversions, but rarely studied at a spatial scale that crosses large river basins. Multiple statistical methods and the water quality index (WQI) were used to assess overall condition and detect spatiotemporal patterns of water quality in a series of impounded lakes along the Eastern Route of China's South-to-North Water Diversion Project. Principal components analysis and analysis of variances identified three groups with distinct water quality characteristics: upstream Gaoyou Lake and Hongze Lake showing relatively higher nutrients, turbidity, and total suspended solids; downstream Dongping lake and Donghu Lake showing higher conductivity, total hardness, and chloride; and Luoma Lake and Nansi Lake intermediate between the two former groups. The WQI indicated overall "Good" water quality with an improving trend from upstream to downstream lakes. The upstream Gaoyou Lake had over 55% of the monitoring sites with "Moderate" water quality in all the seasons. Management should focus on preventing high nitrogen, phosphorus, turbidity, and total suspended solids in upstream lakes, high chloride in downstream lakes, high nitrogen during water diversion seasons, and high phosphorus during non-water diversion seasons. These findings greatly improved our understanding of the spatiotemporal water quality patterns of the impounded lakes, and can be used to develop water quality management strategies. This study exemplifies a methodology for investigating and securing water quality for inter-basin water transfer projects.

Abstract:Xuzhou is the hub city of the east route of China’s South-to-North Water Diversion (SNWD) project and implemented dozens of measures to ensure the water quality security of the water transmission line. In order to detect the effectiveness of water quality improvement measures, the monthly water quality data of five water quality parameters from 2005 to 2015 of six state-controlled monitoring sites in Xuzhou section were selected for analysis. The results showed that the water quality improved from 2.95 in 2005 to 2.74 in 2015, as assessed by the comprehensive water quality identification index (CWQII), and basically reached the Class III standards of China’s Environmental Quality Standard for Surface Water (GB3838-2002) from 2011 to 2015. The trend analysis showed that the decline of ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N) was the most obvious among the five water quality parameters. However, the concentrations of phosphorus (TP) showed significant upward trends at three sites. The positive abrupt change of time series of water quality occurred in 2009–2011. The identification of influencing factors of water quality changes by multivariate statistical methods found that the urbanization factor accompanied by a decrease in agricultural nonpoint source pollution emissions and the enhancement of wastewater treatment capacity, the closure of factories with substandard emissions and precipitation were the major influencing factors of most water quality parameters, which confirmed the effectiveness of measures for water quality improvement in Xuzhou.

Spatial Variability of Water Quality Parameters in Rivers : A Case Study of Some City in South of Jiangsu

Abstract:Based on the investigation data,and combined with the own characteristics of rivers,the theory and method of geostatistics were used to characterize the spatial variability of water quality parameters in rivers of some city in south of Jiangsu and analyzed its causes.The results showed: According to the analysis by variogram model,we found three water quality parameters of rivers had spatial variability in a given spatial range.In this area,the content of CODMn in central and southern rivers showed higher than other parts,and spatial variability of CODMn was mainly caused by the daily activities of residents and the own characteristics of rivers.The content of TP and NH3-N in the rivers exceeded the standard seriously,so the water in this area showed more rich nutrition.The spatial variability of TP and NH3-N were similar and it showed higher district were all in southwest,southeast and northeast of the area.Their spatial variability was mainly caused by industrial activities and daily life of residents,and industrial activities played the leading role.

Abstract:The eastern route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project (SNWDP-ER) in China, an open-channel cross-basin project, is exposed to multiple potential pollution sources and has changing hydrodynamic conditions between diversion and non-diversion periods. After a decade of pollution control efforts, it is imperative to perceive the water quality conditions and identify potential pollution factors for further maintenance. Combining the water quality identification index (WQII) and multivariate statistical techniques (MSTs), this study conducted an exploratory analysis in SNWDP-ER, based on the monitoring data in 2020–2021. The monitoring and WQII results show that the overall water quality in SNWDP-ER is satisfactory and meets the Class III requirements in China Environmental Quality Standard for Surface Water , except for total nitrogen (TN) which falls into Class V or even worse. The periodic alternations of flow direction between diversion and non-diversion periods tend to deteriorate water quality, particularly in the initial stage of alternations. Water quality appears more stable during the diversion period, and impounding lakes along the project are crucial to water environment restoration in this period. Due to the positive influence brought by the self-purification and environmental carrying in the Luoma Lake, Nansi Lake, and Dongping Lake, water quality exhibits an enhancing trend from upstream to downstream in the Lianghu and Jiaodong reaches. Besides, the monitoring stations in Shandong reach exhibit significant divisional heterogeneity under hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) with the Nansi Lake and Dongping Lake as the demarcation points, and the results of factor analysis/principal component analysis (FA/PCA) further identified the contributions of mining, shipping, and land use to each section. Based on the findings, the study recommends implementing wastewater discharge control, abandoned mines remediation, and continued water quality monitoring for further maintenance and improvement in SNWDP-ER.

Abstract:The water source of the water diversion project from the Hanjiang River to the Weihe River is one of the most important drinking water sources in China. Its water quality is related to the water safety of the long-distance water diversion system from the Hanjiang to Weihe Rivers. In order to explore the spatiotemporal change trend of the water environment characteristics of the water source area and analyze the key factors that have a greater impact on it, this study collected 9 types of water environment physical and chemical parameters from 10 water quality monitoring sections from 2017 to 2019; the water environment characteristics of the water source area of the water diversion system from the Hanjiang River to the Weihe River were analyzed and evaluated by using the variance analysis method, the hierarchical cluster analysis method and the water quality identification index evaluation method. The results were as follows. (1) There was spatiotemporal heterogeneity in a number of physical and chemical parameters in the water body of the water source. In terms of time, the concentrations of CODMn, COD, BOD5 and F- were higher in the flood season (July-October) than in the non-flood season (November-June). The concentrations of DO, TP and TN in the non-flood season were higher than those in the flood season. Spatially, the concentration of physical and chemical parameters of the water body in the Huangjinxia Reservoir area was higher than that in the Sanhekou Reservoir area. (2) The water quality of the water source area was good. The comprehensive water quality reached the Class II water quality standard of surface water environmental quality. Time showed that the comprehensive water quality in the non-flood season was better than that in the flood season. Spatially, the overall water quality of the tributaries was better than that of the mainstream. TN is a key indicator that affects water quality. (3) The spatial and temporal differences in water quality in water source areas are mainly affected by factors such as rainfall, temperature and human activities. This study can provide a scientific and data basis for related research on maintaining and improving the quality of the ecological environment of the water source areas of the Hanjiang to Weihe River Water Diversion System.

Abstract:Knowledge of the extent of water pollution along a diversion channel is essential for ensuring the security and effectiveness of water diversion projects. Thus, identifying the trends in the water quality and the factors which influence the trends along a diverted river is a prerequisite to ensuring the safety of the water diversion. As an important control unit of the Eastern Route of the South to North Water Diversion Project, the hilly eastern region of Nansi Lake Basin (ENLB) suffers excess water pollution in the water transferred into Nansi Lake during the flood season. The comprehensive pollution index (CPI), the Mann-Kendall trend test and analysis of variances were used to characterize the spatiotemporal variation of water quality in the three main mountainous rivers of the ENLB. The contribution of different factors which influencing the variation of the water quality parameters may be explained using ridge regression analysis. The results showed that the CPI for the three major rivers decreased significantly from 2000 to 2012. The rivers had problems in compliance, and this was most noticeable in the Guangfu River. The main pollutants exceeding the water quality standards were the chemical oxygen demand and total phosphorus. The GDP per capita was the largest factor which influenced the changes in the regional water quality, with the average contribution being 30%. An increase in the water storage capacity was shown to have a positive effect on improving the water quality. The results provided a scientific basis for establishing a regional pollution control strategy and would give support to the planning of future water diversion projects.

Abstract:Based on multi-variable water quality data, spatio-temporal variations of water quality can be explored to provide a scientific basis for sustainable water quality management. Lixia River Watershed, a relatively closed low-lying polder area in the lower reaches of Huai River basin, China, is closely related to the Yangtze River system. The spatio-temporal variations of water quality of Taizhou, a subsection of the Lixia River Watershed, were assessed based on the monthly water quality data of 39 sampling sites in 2017, by combining methods of Water Quality Index of the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment (CCME WQI), cluster analysis (CA), discriminant analysis (DA) and principal component analysis (PCA). The results show that CCME WQI ranged from 70.17 to 95.35, and the water quality of sampling sites could be grouped into 3 categories, where the southwestern parts of both Hailing and Jiangyan were excellent, the south and northeast of Xinghua were good, the southeast of Jiangyan and the northwest of Xinghua were fair. The 12 months of 2017 were grouped into two clusters, water quality in time period 1 (January to March, July to October) was poor, while that in time period 2 (April to June, November to December) was good. Sampling sites were grouped into two clusters: spatial group A (southwest of both Jiangyan and Hailing, south of Xinghua) and spatial group B (southeast of Jiangyan, north of Xinghua), and spatial group B was seriously polluted. NH 3 -N, total phosphorus (TP) and five-day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD 5 ) were the major variables responsible for water quality variation, while permanganate index (COD Mn ), chemical oxygen demand (COD cr ) and dissolved oxygen (DO) were the secondary parameters.

Abstract:Water quality plays an important role in river habitats. This study revealed the annual and seasonal variations and trend prediction of water quality in the middle Yangtze River after the third impoundment stage of the Three Gorges Reservoir. Multivariate statistical methods including principal component analysis/factor analysis (PCA/FA), Mann–Kendall (M–K) tests, discriminant analysis (DA), rescaled range (R/S) analysis, and the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment Water Quality Index (CCME-WQI) were used. Herein, eight water quality constituents including pH, electrical conductivity (EC), chloride (Cl), dissolved oxygen (DO), ammonia nitrogen (NH 3 N), total phosphorus (TP), water temperature (T), and permanganate index (CODmn) were monthly monitored in the Jiujiang hydrological transaction during 2010–2019. The information of eight water quality constituents, related to salinity, nutrient status, and oxidation reactions efficiency, was extracted. Water quality status remained as fair-good during 2010–2019 based on the results of CCME-WQI, with the seasonal significance ranked as T > DO > Cl > pH > EC > TP > NH 3 N > CODmn. In the future decade, annual average T was predicted to continue to increase although it might decrease in the wet season. EC was predicted to continue increasing annually especially in the wet season while Cl might decrease. NH 3 N and TP might maintain a significant decreasing trend in the future wet and dry seasons. DO maintained significantly increasing especially in the future dry seasons, whereas CODmn will continue to decrease annually and seasonally. The continued alkalization trend of waterbody was predicted, which is more significant in the wet season. The results provide helpful references for the ecological protection of the middle Yangtze River.
Water quality assessment of Middle Route of South-North Water Diversion Project based on modified Nemerow index method

Abstract:Abstract It is of great significance to find a scientific way to assess the water quality of the Middle Route of the South-North Water Diversion Project. In this paper, the spatio-temporal changes of the 26 water quality indicators in eight key monitoring stations along the Middle Route since the project was put into use were analyzed, and the modified Nemerow index method was employed to assess the water quality of the route in its early stage of operation. The results show that the water quality remained good in the period of study. Important water quality indicators were identified, including temperature, permanganate index, dissolved oxygen, total phosphorus, total nitrogen, mercury content, and density of planktonic algae. It is advised that potential ecological risks related to algae and shellfish reproduction in the open canal deserve special attention.

Abstract:The Danjiangkou Reservoir is the water source for the middle route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project in China. Thus, its water quality status is of great concern. Five water quality indicators (dissolved oxygen, permanganate index, ammonia nitrogen, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus), were measured at three monitoring sites (the Danjiangkou Reservoir dam, the Hejiawan and the Jiangbei bridge), to investigate changing trends, and spatiotemporal characteristics of water quality in the Danjiangkou Reservoir area from January 2006 to May 2012. We then applied a Bayesian statistical method to evaluate the water quality comprehensively. The normal distribution sampling method was used to calculate likelihood, and the entropy weight method was used to determine indicator weights for variables of interest in to the study. The results indicated that concentrations of all five indicators increased during the last six years. In addition, the water quality in the reservoir was worse during the wet season (from May to October), than during the dry season (from November to April of the next year). Overall, the probability of the water’s belonging to quality category of type II, according to environmental quality standards for surface water in China, was 27.7%–33.7%, larger than that of its belonging to the other four water quality types. The increasing concentrations of nutrients could result in eutrophication of the Danjiangkou Reservoir. This method reduced the subjectivity that is commonly associated with determining indicator weights and artificial classifications, achieving more reliable results. These results indicate that it is important for the interbasin water diversion project to implement integrated water quality management in the Danjiangkou Reservoir area.

Abstract:In recent years, the water environment management of the Wenyu River has yielded positive outcomes. In comparison to earlier, the general water quality has substantially improved. However, some areas’ water quality has not improved as a result of the overall trend of improvement, which has implications for the surrounding areas and the entire water environment. To further explore the water environmental quality of specific river sections, this paper adopts the five monitoring sections of Shahe Gate, Mafang, Lutuan Gate, Xinbao Gate, and the additional sewage outlet in 2019, and the three main water quality indicators of COD, DO, and NH3-N. The water quality of the Wenyu River was evaluated using the comprehensive water quality identification index method, and the characteristics of its temporal and spatial changes were studied using correlation analysis and spatial clustering. The results have shown that the Wenyu River is generally Grade V water during the flood season, and is inferior to Grade V water during the non-flood season. All indicators have a regular time and space distribution and are highly influenced by environmental and human factors. Overall, the water quality of the Wenyu River may essentially reach the water environment function zoning target value. Improvements to the river portions below the Xinbao sluice, as well as the use of rainwater resources, must be prioritized.

Abstract:In response to water deficiency in Northern China, a scheme called the Middle Route Project was devised under the South-to-North Water Transfer Division to divert water from the Han River, the biggest tributary of the Yangtze River, to supply two provinces (Henan and Hebei) and two municipalities (Beijing and Tianjin) in the north. The minimum water qualityindex (WQImin) based on four water quality parameters and Mann-Kendall test methods were applied to determine the status of overall water quality inDanjiangkou reservoir (DKR) and downstream of Han River before and after the water intake (from 2006 to 2018). Results show that pH, dissolved oxygen, chemical oxygen demand, and ammonia nitrogen of water showed similar seasonal trends at the reservoir center, intaking place and downstream of Han River. According to WQImin index, the water quality status of most water samples at reservoir and downstream remained at good. After water diversion, water quality did not significantly differ from the status before intake at reservoir center. However, water quality was improved at intaking place and downstream. Inter-basin water diversion from reservoir did not deteriorate the local and downstream water quality, or significantly reduce the downstream flow discharge before it pours into Yangtze River. This study can inform other regions with serious water crises that both water diversion and local water quality can be preserved with appropriate environmental managements.

Abstract:Water quality plays an important role in estuarine habitats and affects aquatic organisms. The focus of this study was to understand the temporal-spatial variation of water quality and reveal the natural and anthropogenic drivers by using multiple analysis approaches. Herein, during 2012–2018, six water quality constituents (pH, electrical conductivity (EC), dissolved oxygen (DO), ammonia nitrogen (NH3N), total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP) were examined for eight sites in the Yangtze Estuary, and the hydro-sediment data, i.e., discharge (Q) and sediment transport rate (STR), was collected from the upstream hydrological station Datong. The cluster analysis (CA), principal component analysis (PCA)/factor analysis (FA), Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment Water Quality Index (CCME-WQI), and the Mann–Kendall (MK) test were applied. The eight sampling sites were geographically grouped into cluster I, cluster II, and cluster III based on the characteristics of water quality changes, which are under the influence of the upstream runoff, the anthropogenic activities, and seawater. The results are as follows: (1) NH3N, TN, and DO were key constituents representing the water quality of cluster I and cluster III, and those were EC, TN, and DO for cluster II; (2) The monthly-average Q and STR of Datong were negatively correlated to water quality constituents with seasonal variation except for pH; (3) The impact of anthropogenic activities on water quality was especially reflected in cluster III which is close to the Huangpu River Estuary; upstream runoff was the natural driver of water quality changes for cluster I while that was seawater for cluster II. Seawater acts a key role in affecting the water quality of cluster II situated at the North Branch. Revealing the key drivers of water quality change in the Yangtze Estuary provides a reference for water quality management.

Abstract:Abstract In order to study the spatiotemporal variations characteristic of water quality and potential pollution sources of Qujiang River, the water quality data of twelve water quality parameters at three monitoring sections (Tuanbaoling, Baita, and Sailong) from 2015 to 2019 were analyzed by using comprehensive pollution index (CPI) and multivariate statistical techniques (MST). The water quality parameters of Qujiang River basically meet the class 3 value of environmental quality standards for surface water (GB3838-2002, China). CPI varies from 0.62 to 1.06 and the water quality is characterized by slight pollution at the three monitoring sections. Cluster analysis (CA) results show that the months can be divided into three groups on the basis of similarities of the water quality characteristics: Group 1 (dry season), which includes January-April and November–December; Group 2 (flood season), that is, July; Group 3 (flat season), which consists of May–June and August–October. Principal component analysis (PCA) results identify four principal components (PCs) for the dry season and flood season, and five PCs for the flat season, thus explaining 58.23%, 82.94%, and 73.23% of the total variance, respectively. The results of the independent sample t-test show significant differences among the pH, Permanganate index (COD Mn ), Ammonia nitrogen (NH 3 –N), Total nitrogen (TN), Fecal coliform (F. coli ), and (Flow) Q in the three monitoring sections. Moreover, the pollution is more serious in Baita than Tuanbaoling and Sailong Section and the main problem in the Qujiang River is the high water organic and nitrogen nutrient pollutant content. Hence, monitoring and protection need to be strengthened in the Baita section of Qujiang River.

Abstract:To achieve a holistic assessment of the water quality dynamics within the principal riverine systems of Yandu District, this study employed a comprehensive analysis of the Water Quality Index (WQI) derived from the monthly monitoring data collected at fifteen designated water quality monitoring stations across the main rivers from 2020 to 2022. The following results were obtained: Firstly, the annual average value of WQI during 2020–2022 was 58.14, and the water quality of Yandu District was considered as generally"moderate". Secondly, the WQI values in non-flood season were better than those in flood season and the WQI values in the northeast rivers were lower than other rivers. Thirdly, the main factors affecting water quality were NH 3 -N, TP, COD Mn and DO. Therefore, it is necessary to strengthen the monitoring of water quality during the flood season and prioritize the treatment of the northern rivers in the Yandu District. The findings of this research could offer valuable insights for the evaluation, conservation, and management of water quality within analogous riverine systems, thereby contributing to the broader field of aquatic environmental science.

Identifying trends and driving factors of spatio-temporal water quality variation in Guanting Reservoir Basin, North China

Abstract:Assessment of river quality has been attracting a great deal of attention because of its important implications for the living environment of human beings and aquatic organisms. This study investigated the spatial and temporal variation of water quality and its possible driving factors of Guanting Reservoir Basin. For this purpose, water quality was assessed with the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment Water Quality Index, together with nutrient inputs and social-economic data which were collected and analyzed during the period 2009-2019. The results showed that the overall water quality in Guanting Reservoir increased over time and was rated as "good" during the studied decade. Spatially, water quality in tributary upstream of Yanghe River and Sanggan River was better than that in Guishui River, resulting in better quality in West Reservoir than in East Reservoir. Among water quality indices, total nitrogen was the main pollutant affecting the water quality of the studied area. In addition, principal component analysis and correlation analysis were applied to evaluate the relationships between the socio-economic factors and water quality variation. Urbanization and industry structure were significantly correlated with the water quality variation in upstream tributaries. The findings provide insightful understanding into the spatio-temporal variations of water quality and the associated driving factors of Guanting Reservoir basin, which would help managers in executing theoretical reference for water quality protection.
Impact of inter-basin water diversion project operation on water quality variations of Hanjiang River, China

Abstract:The impact of the operation of inter-basin water diversion projects on the integrity and stability of regional ecosystems cannot be ignored. In this study, water quality samplings were conducted monthly at 16 national monitoring sites in the mid-downstream of the Hanjiang River (HJR, the downstream of the water source of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project of China) over 3 years, covering seven physiochemical water quality indicators and six heavy metal elements. The water quality index (WQI) and multivariate statistical techniques were introduced to comprehensively evaluate water quality status and understand the corresponding driving factors of water quality variations. The heavy metal risks were evaluated using the Nemerow Pollution Index (P n ), the Heavy Metal Pollution Index (HPI), and the human health risk assessment model. The results showed that after the operation of the Middle Route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project of China (MRSNWDPC), water quality in the mid-downstream of the HJR was generally at a "good" status, with the average WQI of 86.37, showing no water quality deterioration trends. The operation of the MRSNWDPC did significantly decrease the monthly flow in the HJR by about 4.05–74.27%, and the flow variation processes also became more stable than before. Most water quality indicators and WQIs have no correlations with the flow and water level changes. The human health risks of all heavy metal elements caused by dermal exposure and ingestion pathways increased over time. The average individual health risk caused by carcinogenic heavy metal Cr was the highest. Chromium is the major carcinogenic factor and should be a critical indicator to pay special attention to for water risk management in the HJR. This study provides a scientific reference for the water quality safety management of HJR under the influence of a water diversion project.

Abstract:Abstract This research evaluated and analyzed the water quality of Zipingpu Reservoir using the Comprehensive Water Quality Index and Nemerow index method, based on monitoring data from 2019 to 2021 at four monitoring sites. It also used temporal and spatial change rate analysis to understand changes in water quality among the four monitoring sites—Aba Aluminum Factory, Chaguan Village, Cross‐reservoir Bridge and Xuankou Village—as well as the reservoir as a whole. The results show that: from the result of comprehensive water quality index, the water quality of Zipingpu Reservoir had improved in 3 years, and the water quality was excellent. The Nemerow index method results for the four monitoring sections in 2019, 2020, and 2021, which varied from 0.37 to 0.47, demonstrated that the reservoir was rated as having high water quality and Class I standard water quality. According to the results of the improved Nemerow pollution index method, the Improved Nemerow pollution index values were all between 0.27 and 0.32 and the water quality was within the Class I range each of the 3 years and fluctuated less. The water quality of the Aba aluminum facility was marginally worse than that of the other three monitoring sites during the monitoring period, according to the spatial rate of change (S/%). The reservoir's water quality improved slightly between 2019 and 2021, according to the temporal rate of change (T/%).
