Abstract:The eastern route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project (SNWDP-ER) in China, an open-channel cross-basin project, is exposed to multiple potential pollution sources and has changing hydrodynamic conditions between diversion and non-diversion periods. After a decade of pollution control efforts, it is imperative to perceive the water quality conditions and identify potential pollution factors for further maintenance. Combining the water quality identification index (WQII) and multivariate statistical techniques (MSTs), this study conducted an exploratory analysis in SNWDP-ER, based on the monitoring data in 2020–2021. The monitoring and WQII results show that the overall water quality in SNWDP-ER is satisfactory and meets the Class III requirements in China Environmental Quality Standard for Surface Water , except for total nitrogen (TN) which falls into Class V or even worse. The periodic alternations of flow direction between diversion and non-diversion periods tend to deteriorate water quality, particularly in the initial stage of alternations. Water quality appears more stable during the diversion period, and impounding lakes along the project are crucial to water environment restoration in this period. Due to the positive influence brought by the self-purification and environmental carrying in the Luoma Lake, Nansi Lake, and Dongping Lake, water quality exhibits an enhancing trend from upstream to downstream in the Lianghu and Jiaodong reaches. Besides, the monitoring stations in Shandong reach exhibit significant divisional heterogeneity under hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) with the Nansi Lake and Dongping Lake as the demarcation points, and the results of factor analysis/principal component analysis (FA/PCA) further identified the contributions of mining, shipping, and land use to each section. Based on the findings, the study recommends implementing wastewater discharge control, abandoned mines remediation, and continued water quality monitoring for further maintenance and improvement in SNWDP-ER.

Abstract:AbstractThe Middle Route (MR) of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project (SNWDP) of China is one of the world’s largest inter-basin water diversion projects. As an important source of drinking water in North China, its water quality safety determines the success or failure of a sizable water supply. At present, there is a lack of in-depth and systematic understanding of the interaction between hydrodynamics and the water environment as well as water ecological processes in the main canal at the early stages of operation. It is not currently possible to accurately predict water quality and algae status at the early stage of canal ecosystem succession. Change trends and distribution characteristics of the main water ecological environment elements in the main canal at the early MR stage are analyzed in this study. The main factors influencing algae are investigated by principal component analysis (PCA) to characterize the water quality and algae transport distribution in the main MR canal under the complex multi-sluice joint dispatching conditions. The relationship between environmental factors, hydrodynamic, water quality, and algae in the coupled canal-sluice system in the SNWDP MR is determined. Algae distributions under different water transmission conditions in a typical canal section are predicted accordingly. CODMn and algal density in the main canal are shown to increase from south to north along the canal. DO decreases from south to north; other water quality indexes do not significantly differ from north to south. Algal density along the canal differs to the greatest extent in summer, followed by spring and autumn, and is the weakest in winter. The predicted algae densities in the main canal under different water conveying conditions show that single sluice control and strong water flow from Taocha Head Section increase the flow velocity after passing through the sluice with a fixed opening. Algal density decreases flow rate increases under single sluice regulation conditions. The maximum rate of algal density change reaches 22.13% and 29.55% under double sluice and four sluice scheduling. Algae control effects grow significantly as the number of control sluices increases. The results of this work may provide technical support for water quality forecasting and algae risk warning in the SNWDP MR as well as a workable reference for similar projects.

Abstract:Water quality plays an important role in river habitats. This study revealed the annual and seasonal variations and trend prediction of water quality in the middle Yangtze River after the third impoundment stage of the Three Gorges Reservoir. Multivariate statistical methods including principal component analysis/factor analysis (PCA/FA), Mann–Kendall (M–K) tests, discriminant analysis (DA), rescaled range (R/S) analysis, and the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment Water Quality Index (CCME-WQI) were used. Herein, eight water quality constituents including pH, electrical conductivity (EC), chloride (Cl), dissolved oxygen (DO), ammonia nitrogen (NH 3 N), total phosphorus (TP), water temperature (T), and permanganate index (CODmn) were monthly monitored in the Jiujiang hydrological transaction during 2010–2019. The information of eight water quality constituents, related to salinity, nutrient status, and oxidation reactions efficiency, was extracted. Water quality status remained as fair-good during 2010–2019 based on the results of CCME-WQI, with the seasonal significance ranked as T > DO > Cl > pH > EC > TP > NH 3 N > CODmn. In the future decade, annual average T was predicted to continue to increase although it might decrease in the wet season. EC was predicted to continue increasing annually especially in the wet season while Cl might decrease. NH 3 N and TP might maintain a significant decreasing trend in the future wet and dry seasons. DO maintained significantly increasing especially in the future dry seasons, whereas CODmn will continue to decrease annually and seasonally. The continued alkalization trend of waterbody was predicted, which is more significant in the wet season. The results provide helpful references for the ecological protection of the middle Yangtze River.

Abstract:Water quality is one of the key determinants for assessing effectiveness and success of water diversions, but rarely studied at a spatial scale that crosses large river basins. Multiple statistical methods and the water quality index (WQI) were used to assess overall condition and detect spatiotemporal patterns of water quality in a series of impounded lakes along the Eastern Route of China's South-to-North Water Diversion Project. Principal components analysis and analysis of variances identified three groups with distinct water quality characteristics: upstream Gaoyou Lake and Hongze Lake showing relatively higher nutrients, turbidity, and total suspended solids; downstream Dongping lake and Donghu Lake showing higher conductivity, total hardness, and chloride; and Luoma Lake and Nansi Lake intermediate between the two former groups. The WQI indicated overall "Good" water quality with an improving trend from upstream to downstream lakes. The upstream Gaoyou Lake had over 55% of the monitoring sites with "Moderate" water quality in all the seasons. Management should focus on preventing high nitrogen, phosphorus, turbidity, and total suspended solids in upstream lakes, high chloride in downstream lakes, high nitrogen during water diversion seasons, and high phosphorus during non-water diversion seasons. These findings greatly improved our understanding of the spatiotemporal water quality patterns of the impounded lakes, and can be used to develop water quality management strategies. This study exemplifies a methodology for investigating and securing water quality for inter-basin water transfer projects.

Abstract:Hanjiang River is the major water resource of the middle route of the South-to-North Water Transfer Project (SNWT),and water quality of the Middle and Downstream of HR (MDHR) is a critical issue for drinking water safety concerned by the national and Hubei provincial governments. To study the water quality status and characteristics of MDHR in the affected area of SNWT,and to lay the foundation for further research on the impact of the project operation on the water quality in MDHR,this study collected 7 water quality parameters from 11 monitoring sections in MDHR during 2011-2014 to comprehensively identify the temporal and spatial characteristics of the water quality in the study area,and apply the water quality index method and hierarchical cluster analysis method. The selected water quality parameters were pH,ρ(DO),ρ(CODMn),ρ(BOD5),ρ(NH3-N),ρ(TP) and ρ(TN). The results were as follows: Firstly, water quality in MDHR was generally poorer than that of Category Ⅳ-Ⅴduring 2011-2014 according to 'the environmental quality standards for surface water '(GB 3838-2012). The water quality parameters that failed to meet the standards were TN,TP and BOD5, among which TN was the most important indicator. Secondly,in order to further understand the impact of TN on the water quality of the study area,scenario analyses were performed by summarizing different concentration of TN,TP and both of them. The results indicated that controlling ρ(TN) could effectively improve the water quality in MDHR. And thirdly,the study applied a cluster analysis on the water quality in MDHR and divided the time into two categories,basically corresponding to the flood season and non-flood season in the study area. The monitoring sections were spatially divided into three major categories, namely Shenwan, Zekou,Xingou, Zongguan, Zhuangdou,Huangzhuang,Hannancun,Shilou,Baijiawan,Yujiahu,Luohanzha,among which the third one was further subdivided into 3 sub-categories corresponding to the geographical positions of the sections. Furthermore,the nutrient state analysis showed that the water body in MDHR suffered serious eutrophication and nutrient indexes such as ρ(TP) and ρ(TN) were significantly decreased and increased in the non-flood seasons,respectively,while there were no significant changes in the flood seasons. The results showed that water pollution in MDHR is heavy with serious eutrophication,and ρ(TN) is supposed to the mainfactor.

Abstract:The impact of the operation of inter-basin water diversion projects on the integrity and stability of regional ecosystems cannot be ignored. In this study, water quality samplings were conducted monthly at 16 national monitoring sites in the mid-downstream of the Hanjiang River (HJR, the downstream of the water source of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project of China) over 3 years, covering seven physiochemical water quality indicators and six heavy metal elements. The water quality index (WQI) and multivariate statistical techniques were introduced to comprehensively evaluate water quality status and understand the corresponding driving factors of water quality variations. The heavy metal risks were evaluated using the Nemerow Pollution Index (P n ), the Heavy Metal Pollution Index (HPI), and the human health risk assessment model. The results showed that after the operation of the Middle Route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project of China (MRSNWDPC), water quality in the mid-downstream of the HJR was generally at a "good" status, with the average WQI of 86.37, showing no water quality deterioration trends. The operation of the MRSNWDPC did significantly decrease the monthly flow in the HJR by about 4.05–74.27%, and the flow variation processes also became more stable than before. Most water quality indicators and WQIs have no correlations with the flow and water level changes. The human health risks of all heavy metal elements caused by dermal exposure and ingestion pathways increased over time. The average individual health risk caused by carcinogenic heavy metal Cr was the highest. Chromium is the major carcinogenic factor and should be a critical indicator to pay special attention to for water risk management in the HJR. This study provides a scientific reference for the water quality safety management of HJR under the influence of a water diversion project.

Abstract:Abstract It is of great significance to find a scientific way to assess the water quality of the Middle Route of the South-North Water Diversion Project. In this paper, the spatio-temporal changes of the 26 water quality indicators in eight key monitoring stations along the Middle Route since the project was put into use were analyzed, and the modified Nemerow index method was employed to assess the water quality of the route in its early stage of operation. The results show that the water quality remained good in the period of study. Important water quality indicators were identified, including temperature, permanganate index, dissolved oxygen, total phosphorus, total nitrogen, mercury content, and density of planktonic algae. It is advised that potential ecological risks related to algae and shellfish reproduction in the open canal deserve special attention.

Abstract:The variation of water quality in long-distance water supply projects is often different from that in natural water bodies, especially the environmental risks of artificial open canal water transfer projects are seldom studied. The spatial heterogeneity of algae growth and the absence of universal reference standards for algae control often lead to water quality problems in these projects. The Middle Route (MR) of the South-to-North Water Transfer Project of China (SNWTPC), the world's largest inter-basin water transfer project, has operated stably for six years. Its water resources have benefited more than 60 million people and an ecosystem cover more than 160,000 km2. To understand the water environment risk of this mega hydro-project, this study focused on the relationships among three key parameters: water temperature (T), water discharge (Q), flow rate (V) and analyzed the spatial–temporal variation characteristics of the algal cell density (ACD) in the MR of the SNWTPC from January 2016 to December 2018, 36 months in total. The Copula functions were applied to identify and evaluate the multivariate risk variation of the water environment. Our result demonstrated that there was a significant positive correlation between T and ACD, and the ACD at the downstream has a 50% risk higher than 700 × 104 cell/L in summer. Overall, the water quality status of the MR of the SNWTPC is quite well, and the ACD kept at an average level of 106 cells/L during the monitoring period. Additionally, the ACD increased from upstream to downstream, showing the relatively higher ACD in summer and autumn than in spring and winter, with the ranges of 500 ~ 700 × 104 cells/L and 200 ~ 300 × 104 cells/L, respectively. The water temperature affected the ACD over the early-warning thresholds at different canal sections were as follows: 29, 26, and 21℃ from upstream to downstream, respectively. The influences of the hydrodynamic factors, water discharge and flow rate, impact on the ACD variation were analyzed to achieve the purpose of specific algae control for different canal reaches. Our study verified that the growth probabilities of the ACD under higher water temperature and water discharge in the MR of the SNWTPC than other natural water bodies.

Abstract:Understanding and quantifying the influences and contributions of air pollution emissions on water quality variations is critically important for surface water quality protection and management. To address this, we created a five-year daily data matrix of six water quality indicators-permanganate index (CODMn), NH3-N, pH, turbidity, conductivity, and dissolved organic matter (DOM)-and six air pollution indicators-O3, CO, NO2, SO2, 2.5 μm particulate matter (PM2.5), and inhalable particles (PM10)-using data from seven national monitoring stations along the world's longest water-diversion project, the Middle Route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project in China (MR-SNWD). Multivariate techniques (Mann-Kendall, Spearman's correlation, lag correlation, and Generalized Additive Models [GAMs]) were applied to examine the nonlinear relationships and lag effects of air pollution on water quality. Air pollution and water quality exhibited marked spatial heterogeneity along the MR-SNWD, with all water quality parameters meeting Class I or II national standards and the air pollution indicators exceeding those thresholds. Except for CODMn and DOM, the other water quality and air pollution indicators exhibited significant seasonal differences. Air pollution exhibited significant lag effects on water quality at the northern stations, with NO2, SO2, PM2.5, and PM10 being highly correlated with changes in pH, with an average lag of 17 d. Based on the GAMs, lag effects enhanced the significant nonlinear relationships between air pollution and water quality, increasing the average deviance explained for CODMn, NH3-N, and pH by 93%, 24%, and 41%, respectively. These findings provide a scientific basis for protecting water quality along the long-distance inter-basin water-diversion project under anthropogenic air pollution.
A Bayesian method for comprehensive water quality evaluation of the Danjiangkou Reservoir water source area, for the middle route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project in China

Abstract:The Danjiangkou Reservoir is the water source for the middle route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project in China. Thus, its water quality status is of great concern. Five water quality indicators (dissolved oxygen, permanganate index, ammonia nitrogen, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus), were measured at three monitoring sites (the Danjiangkou Reservoir dam, the Hejiawan and the Jiangbei bridge), to investigate changing trends, and spatiotemporal characteristics of water quality in the Danjiangkou Reservoir area from January 2006 to May 2012. We then applied a Bayesian statistical method to evaluate the water quality comprehensively. The normal distribution sampling method was used to calculate likelihood, and the entropy weight method was used to determine indicator weights for variables of interest in to the study. The results indicated that concentrations of all five indicators increased during the last six years. In addition, the water quality in the reservoir was worse during the wet season (from May to October), than during the dry season (from November to April of the next year). Overall, the probability of the water’s belonging to quality category of type II, according to environmental quality standards for surface water in China, was 27.7%–33.7%, larger than that of its belonging to the other four water quality types. The increasing concentrations of nutrients could result in eutrophication of the Danjiangkou Reservoir. This method reduced the subjectivity that is commonly associated with determining indicator weights and artificial classifications, achieving more reliable results. These results indicate that it is important for the interbasin water diversion project to implement integrated water quality management in the Danjiangkou Reservoir area.

Abstract:The water source of the water diversion project from the Hanjiang River to the Weihe River is one of the most important drinking water sources in China. Its water quality is related to the water safety of the long-distance water diversion system from the Hanjiang to Weihe Rivers. In order to explore the spatiotemporal change trend of the water environment characteristics of the water source area and analyze the key factors that have a greater impact on it, this study collected 9 types of water environment physical and chemical parameters from 10 water quality monitoring sections from 2017 to 2019; the water environment characteristics of the water source area of the water diversion system from the Hanjiang River to the Weihe River were analyzed and evaluated by using the variance analysis method, the hierarchical cluster analysis method and the water quality identification index evaluation method. The results were as follows. (1) There was spatiotemporal heterogeneity in a number of physical and chemical parameters in the water body of the water source. In terms of time, the concentrations of CODMn, COD, BOD5 and F- were higher in the flood season (July-October) than in the non-flood season (November-June). The concentrations of DO, TP and TN in the non-flood season were higher than those in the flood season. Spatially, the concentration of physical and chemical parameters of the water body in the Huangjinxia Reservoir area was higher than that in the Sanhekou Reservoir area. (2) The water quality of the water source area was good. The comprehensive water quality reached the Class II water quality standard of surface water environmental quality. Time showed that the comprehensive water quality in the non-flood season was better than that in the flood season. Spatially, the overall water quality of the tributaries was better than that of the mainstream. TN is a key indicator that affects water quality. (3) The spatial and temporal differences in water quality in water source areas are mainly affected by factors such as rainfall, temperature and human activities. This study can provide a scientific and data basis for related research on maintaining and improving the quality of the ecological environment of the water source areas of the Hanjiang to Weihe River Water Diversion System.

Abstract:Water quality plays an important role in estuarine habitats and affects aquatic organisms. The focus of this study was to understand the temporal-spatial variation of water quality and reveal the natural and anthropogenic drivers by using multiple analysis approaches. Herein, during 2012–2018, six water quality constituents (pH, electrical conductivity (EC), dissolved oxygen (DO), ammonia nitrogen (NH3N), total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP) were examined for eight sites in the Yangtze Estuary, and the hydro-sediment data, i.e., discharge (Q) and sediment transport rate (STR), was collected from the upstream hydrological station Datong. The cluster analysis (CA), principal component analysis (PCA)/factor analysis (FA), Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment Water Quality Index (CCME-WQI), and the Mann–Kendall (MK) test were applied. The eight sampling sites were geographically grouped into cluster I, cluster II, and cluster III based on the characteristics of water quality changes, which are under the influence of the upstream runoff, the anthropogenic activities, and seawater. The results are as follows: (1) NH3N, TN, and DO were key constituents representing the water quality of cluster I and cluster III, and those were EC, TN, and DO for cluster II; (2) The monthly-average Q and STR of Datong were negatively correlated to water quality constituents with seasonal variation except for pH; (3) The impact of anthropogenic activities on water quality was especially reflected in cluster III which is close to the Huangpu River Estuary; upstream runoff was the natural driver of water quality changes for cluster I while that was seawater for cluster II. Seawater acts a key role in affecting the water quality of cluster II situated at the North Branch. Revealing the key drivers of water quality change in the Yangtze Estuary provides a reference for water quality management.
Temporal trend and source apportionment of water pollution in different functional zones of Qiantang River, China.

Abstract:The increasingly serious river water pollution in developing countries poses great threat to environmental health and human welfare. The assignment of river function to specific uses, known as zoning, is a useful tool to reveal variations of water environmental adaptability to human impact. Therefore, characterizing the temporal trend and identifying responsible pollution sources in different functional zones could greatly improve our knowledge about human impacts on the river water environment. The aim of this study is to obtain a deeper understanding of temporal trends and sources of water pollution in different functional zones with a case study of the Qiantang River, China. Measurement data were obtained and pretreated for 13 variables from 41 monitoring sites in four categories of functional zones during the period 1996–2004. An exploratory approach, which combines smoothing and non-parametric statistical tests, was applied to characterize trends of four significant parameters (permanganate index, ammonia nitrogen, total cadmium and fluoride) accounting for differences among different functional zones identified by discriminant analysis. Aided by GIS, yearly pollution index (PI) for each monitoring site was further mapped to compare the within-group variations in temporal dynamics for different functional zones. Rotated principal component analysis and receptor model (absolute principle component score-multiple linear regression, APCS-MLR) revealed that potential pollution sources and their corresponding contributions varied among the four functional zones. Variations of APCS values for each site of one functional zone as well as their annual average values highlighted the uncertainties associated with cross space-time effects in source apportionment. All these results reinforce the notion that the concept of zoning should be taken seriously in water pollution control. Being applicable to other rivers, the framework of management-oriented source apportionment is thus believed to have potentials to offer new insights into water management and advance the source apportionment framework as an operational basis for national and local governments.
Spatio-Temporal Variation of Water Quality in Lixia River Watershed Associated with the Operation of a Water Diversion Project

Abstract:Based on multi-variable water quality data, spatio-temporal variations of water quality can be explored to provide a scientific basis for sustainable water quality management. Lixia River Watershed, a relatively closed low-lying polder area in the lower reaches of Huai River basin, China, is closely related to the Yangtze River system. The spatio-temporal variations of water quality of Taizhou, a subsection of the Lixia River Watershed, were assessed based on the monthly water quality data of 39 sampling sites in 2017, by combining methods of Water Quality Index of the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment (CCME WQI), cluster analysis (CA), discriminant analysis (DA) and principal component analysis (PCA). The results show that CCME WQI ranged from 70.17 to 95.35, and the water quality of sampling sites could be grouped into 3 categories, where the southwestern parts of both Hailing and Jiangyan were excellent, the south and northeast of Xinghua were good, the southeast of Jiangyan and the northwest of Xinghua were fair. The 12 months of 2017 were grouped into two clusters, water quality in time period 1 (January to March, July to October) was poor, while that in time period 2 (April to June, November to December) was good. Sampling sites were grouped into two clusters: spatial group A (southwest of both Jiangyan and Hailing, south of Xinghua) and spatial group B (southeast of Jiangyan, north of Xinghua), and spatial group B was seriously polluted. NH 3 -N, total phosphorus (TP) and five-day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD 5 ) were the major variables responsible for water quality variation, while permanganate index (COD Mn ), chemical oxygen demand (COD cr ) and dissolved oxygen (DO) were the secondary parameters.

Abstract:The Middle Route of South-to-North Water Diversion Project of China (MRSNWDPC) is the most important inter-basin water diversion project. This study screened out 8 water quality indicators, including pH, ammonia nitrogen (NH3 -N), fecal coliform (F. coli), dissolved oxygen (DO), permanganate index (PI), five-day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), fluoride (F-), sulfate (SO4 2-), which were from monthly monitoring data of 29 sections between January 2016 and December 2018, and analyzed the probability distribution characteristics of water quality deterioration rate (WQDR) samples, compared the advantages of three kinds of probability density function parameter optimization method, then the probability density model of each water quality indicator is constructed. By defining the section water quality risk and setting the threshold, the risk level of harmful water quality events (“ degradation ”or“ standard exceedance ”) in the next one month was calculated based on the real-time monitoring data. The main conclusions include: (1) The probability density of WQDR samples in the MRSNWDPC basically corresponded to the p-III distribution, and the optimum line method can be used as the parameter optimization method of the distribution function. (2) The water quality risk assessment method proposed in this paper could calculate sectional risk based on real-time monitoring data of water quality and play an early warning role in the occurrence of harmful water quality events in the next one month. (3) From 2016 to 2018, water quality deterioration existed in the MRSNWDPC, and the probability of pH, DO and BOD5 with higher risk level was higher than other indicators. However, further research is needed to confirm whether a stable trend of water quality deterioration exists. This study redefines the concept of risk of sectional water quality from the perspective of the probability of occurrence of harmful events and sets the threshold value of risk level in combination with the water body function, so as to predict the future water quality risk level in the next month, which plays a good warning role in the water quality management of the MRSNWDPC and can help relevant management departments to make response plans in advance. It is worth mentioning that the method proposed in this paper has been applied to the water quality monitoring and early warning integrated management platform of the main canal of the MRSNWDPC.

Abstract:Inter-basin water transfer projects, such as the Yellow River to Qingdao Water Diversion Project (YQWD), are essential for addressing water scarcity, but impact local aquatic ecosystems. This study investigates the seasonal characteristics of eukaryotic microbial communities in the Jihongtan Reservoir, the main water-receiving body of YQWD, over a one-year period using 18S rDNA amplicon sequencing. The results showed that the eukaryotic microbial diversity did not exhibit significant seasonal variation (p > 0.05), but there was a notable variance in the community structure (p < 0.05). Arthropoda and Paracyclopina, representing the most dominant phylum and the most dominant genus, respectively, both exhibited the lowest abundance during the winter. The Chlorophyta, as the second-dominant phylum, demonstrates its higher abundance in the spring and winter. The Mantel test and PLS-PM (Partial Least Squares Path Modeling) revealed that water temperature (WT), dissolved oxygen (DO), and pH influenced the seasonal dynamic of eukaryotic microbial communities significantly, of which WT was the primary driving factor. In addition to environmental factors, water diversion is likely to be an important influencing factor. The results of the co-occurrence network and robustness suggested that the spring network is the most complex and exhibits the highest stability. Moreover, keystone taxa within networks have been identified, revealing that these key groups encompass both abundant and rare species, with specificity to different seasons. These insights are vital for understanding the seasonal variation of microbial communities in the Jihongtan Reservoir during ongoing water diversions.

Abstract:The South-to-North Water Diversion (SNWD) is a mega water infrastructure project that aims to alleviate the water shortage in northern China and promote regional sustainable development. To quantitatively evaluates the structure changes and driving factors of water consumption in the four provinces along the middle route project of SNWD (MRP-SNWD) after the operation of the MRP-SNWD, this study takes domestic, agricultural, and industrial water consumption as the objects, employs the Logarithmic Mean Divisia Index (LMDI) model to identify the changes in water consumption and the contribution rate of the driving effects based on data from 2014 to 2020. The structure, technical, economic, population, irrigation, and production effects have varied degrees of influence on regional demotic, agricultural, and industrial water consumption. Additionally, there is a significant spatial variability in the contribution rates of the driving forces behind water consumption changes. This study contributes to integrated water resources management and sustainable water development by providing a scientific basis for efficient use of regional water resources.

Abstract:In many arid and semiarid regions, water scarcity, population increase and frequent droughts are exerting great pressures on water resources. Presently, the Mid-route of the South-to-North Water Transfer Project (MRSN) was built to mitigate the water crisis in the north of China by long-distance transfer of water from the Yangtze River in southern China. This study investigated the running condition of the MRSN, including operation management, freezing situation and water quality. Water samples were also taken from different sites and then analyzed in laboratory. Results suggest that the project was reasonably designed and the project management was excellent. Closed management was adopted in the project to protect water quality. The sediment concentrations and water turbidities of the water samples were in the range of 0.2–0.8 kg/m3 and 0.8–1.7 NTU, respectively, which met or were close to the standards of drinking water in China. Water freezing is also not a problem, since the thickest ice was only 0.9 cm even in the coldest season as the authors measured the investigation, and at the same time, the ice booms worked well. In the future, it is promising that to effectively integrate the methods of self-rescuing and water importing could fundamentally conquer water shortage, reasonably allocate water resources and finally achieve the harmonious development of economics, ecology and society.
