Abstract:The southwestern coastal region of Bangladesh has a severe problem of extracting groundwater due to salinity intrusion. This study aims at the vulnerability assessment of the shallow aquifer of such a salinity-affected region of coastal Bangladesh. GIS-based DRASTIC Index method has been applied in Bagerhat Sadar, Fakirhat and Rampal Upazila which accounts parameters like Depth to the water table, net Recharge, Aquifer media, Soil media, Topography, Impact of the vadose zone, and hydraulic Conductivity. Finally, the mapping of the DRASTIC Index has been resulted in low-, moderate- and high-vulnerable zones. This study reveals that about 85.43% area which is 656.85 km2 is exposed to moderate vulnerability. Only 7.88% area is under low risk, whereas 6.69% area is highly vulnerable. Fortunately, the southwestern part which is adjacent to the coast has a comparatively low vulnerability. The northeastern region which carries the urban area is characterized by highly vulnerable zones. Moderate- and high-vulnerable zones imply more accessibility of saline surface water to the ground.

Abstract:Seawater intrusion is a growing concern for coastal regions in Bangladesh. Overexploitation of groundwater, low rainfall, a high rate of evaporation, rising sea level, cyclones, storm surges, and shrimp cultivation are the causes of seawater intrusion that polluted the groundwater near the coastal area. High values of EC, TDS, Na+, and Cl− ions in groundwater indicate the seawater intrusion. Piper’s Trilinear and Durov diagrams of groundwater indicated that most gathered groundwater show predominantly Na–Cl-type of water. Based on the USSL diagram, it is observed that the salinity of the study area is medium to high and the alkalinity is medium to very high. Also, in view of the Wilcox outline, most of the samples in the area of interest are permissible to doubtful, and doubtful to unsuitable. Chloride is moderately correlated with Na+ (R2 = 0.590) and poorly correlated with (HCO3− + CO32−) (R2 = 0.128), which indicates seawater intrusion. According to a comparison of the levels of Fe and Mn in the groundwater of the study area with those recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) and Department of the Environment (DOE), twenty-two out of thirty-one samples exceed the acceptable limit for Fe and thirty out of thirty-one samples fall within the acceptable limit for Mn. The calculated water quality index reveals that most samples are of low drinking water quality. The research area’s poor water type is found in the north-central and southern parts. The WQI geographic variation map reveals that the study’s water has a WQI of more than 100, making it unsuitable for consumption. The final seawater intrusion vulnerability map clearly identifies the moderate to highly vulnerable zone of the study area using DRASTIC index parameters. DRASTIC index parameters revealed that some portions of the northwestern part of the sample area show a moderately vulnerable zone. And the rest of the sampling area indicates the highly vulnerable zone.

Abstract:The coastal region of Bangladesh is under a complex situation linked to its other parts due to the direct connection of the groundwater resources with the Bay of Bengal. Seawater (SW) intrusion in coastal aquifers is a challenging issue worldwide in the modern era. The coastal aquifer of Bangladesh is more vulnerable to salinization due to SW intrusion. The present research aims to identify the saline water intrusion in the coastal aquifer of the Bagerhat district. Twenty-four groundwater (GW) samples were collected and analyzed to determine physico-chemical properties and calculated important ratios by various equations to determine the most effective mechanisms of GW salinity due to SW intrusion. Na+ ranged from 1524.145 to 3666.704 mg/l, Cl− ranged from 2098.82 mg/l to 5598.74 mg/l in pre-monsoon and Na+ ranged from 630.99 to 1686.83 mg/l, Cl− ranged from 929.58 to 2639.94 mg/l in post-monsoon, EC ranged from 2160 to 3990 µS/cm in pre-monsoon and from 860 to 2240 µS/cm in post-monsoon and TDS ranged from 3907.54 to 9551.33 mg/l in pre-monsoon and 1707.67 to 4410.99 mg/l in post-monsoon which reveals that salt enriched GW is dissolved with infiltrated rainwater. The Na+/Cl− ratios ranged from 0.590 to 0.803, Cl−/(HCO3− + CO32−) and Cl−/HCO3− ranged from 4.61 to 35.25. Ca2+/(HCO3− + SO42−) ranged from 0.01 to 0.32, HCO32−/Cl− ranged from 0.28 to 0.217 and SO42−/Cl− ratios ranged from 0.0001 to 0.0091 which indicate that the GW is contaminated with saline water in coastal aquifers. Concentrations of physico-chemical parameters, ionic ratios, and various diagrams proved that SW intrusion occurs in the coastal aquifer. The spatial distribution maps were prepared using ARCGIS. The spatial distribution of Na+, Cl−, SMI, and salinity map indicated the study area was highly affected by SW intrusion.

Abstract:Saltwater intrusion in the coastal areas of Bangladesh is a prevalent phenomenon. However, it is not conducive to activities such as irrigation, navigation, fish spawning and shelter, and industrial usage. The present study analyzed 45 water samples collected from 15 locations in coastal areas during three seasons: monsoon, pre-monsoon, and post-monsoon. The aim was to comprehend the seasonal variation in physicochemical parameters, including water temperature, pH, electrical conductivity (EC), salinity, total dissolved solids (TDS), hardness, and concentrations of Na+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Fe2+, HCO3-, PO43-, SO42-, and Cl-. Additionally, parameters essential for agriculture, such as soluble sodium percentage (SSP), sodium absorption ratio (SAR), magnesium absorption ratio (MAR), residual sodium carbonate (RSC), Kelly's ratio (KR), and permeability index (PI), were examined. Their respective values were found to be 63%, 16.83 mg/L, 34.92 mg/L, 145.44 mg/L, 1.28 mg/L, and 89.29%. The integrated water quality index was determined using entropy theory and principal component analysis (PCA). The resulting entropy water quality index (EWQI) and SAR of 49.56% and 63%, respectively, indicated that the samples are suitable for drinking but unsuitable for irrigation. These findings can assist policymakers in implementing the Bangladesh Deltaplan-2100, focusing on sustainable land management, fish cultivation, agricultural production, environmental preservation, water resource management, and environmental protection in the deltaic areas of Bangladesh. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of seasonal variations in the hydrochemistry and water quality of coastal rivers, aiding in the comprehension of salinity intrusion origins, mechanisms, and causes.

Abstract:Abstract Groundwater is one of the fundamental sources of fresh water. Currently, the unequal distribution of groundwater poses a significant environmental crisis, leading to scarcity in certain regions and affecting the livelihood of living organisms worldwide. The present study introduces the Sub-Himalayan foothills Dooars, a highly populated and agriculturally based area. To delineate the groundwater potentiality eight different effective parameters have been employed such as slope, geomorphology, soil, LULC, lineament, rainfall, hydrogeology, and drainage density. For the process and development of these eight thematic layers, geographic information systems and satellite images (Landsat 8) have been used to give the normalized weight and rank value in each thematic layer and their sub-criteria. MCDA-AHP-based model is used for overlay analysis to delineate groundwater potentiality (GWPZ). After overlay analysis in ArcGIS 10.2.2 final groundwater potentiality map is further grouped into four potentiality zones, i.e., very high, high, moderate, and low potential zones. A very high potential zone encompasses 22.45 sq. km. in the southern portion of the selected study region. The high potential zone encompasses 1613.32 sq. km in the southeastern part, the moderate zone is covered by 1063.84 sq.km, and the 71.03 sq.km (2.56% area of the region) area is covered by the low potential zone. The available well data from CGWB have been utilized to assess the potential of groundwater in the district, ensuring originality and authentic validation. It is found that there is a correlation between the observed potentiality zone and existing well data. With the growing population in the Sub-Himalayan Dooars region, there has been a corresponding rise in the demand for water. Hence, this research would assist the authorities and policymakers in effectively managing the groundwater resources in the district.

Abstract:Analysis of groundwater level fluctuations is critical to understanding groundwater system dynamics and the factors that cause groundwater level fluctuations. Although most of the earlier studies focused on time series trend analysis using typical non-parametric tests, groundwater level fluctuations in drought-prone areas of northern Bangladesh are still poorly understood. To this end, the present study aims to analyze groundwater level fluctuations from 1980 to 2019 and associated influencing factors on groundwater level oscillation using the modified Mann-Kendall test and Pearson's correlation method. Using GIS-based analytical hierarchical process (AHP) techniques, this study also identifies potential groundwater zones in the designated area. The result showed that 42.5% of monitoring wells had groundwater levels from 4.5 to 5.5 m during the pre-monsoon, whereas 57.5% had groundwater levels from 2.5 to 3.5 m during the monsoon in recent years. Based on the annual average groundwater level, the result showed that 62.5% of monitored wells had a declining trend, and 37.5% had an increasing trend from 2000 to 2019. A negative correlation was observed between groundwater level and rainfall in all monitoring wells, as the area's rainfall impacted the groundwater level fluctuations. There was also a substantial positive correlation between groundwater levels, extraction, and potential evapotranspiration. The groundwater potential zone mapping shows three primary groundwater prospect categories: poor (1.9%), moderate (34.16%), and excellent (63.94%). The findings will assist planners and policymakers in allocating groundwater resources in various sectors such as agriculture, drinking water, and industry.

Abstract:A total of 21 water samples were collected from surface water (ponds and river) and groundwater samples from shallow tube well (STW) and deep tube well (DTW) from Gopalganj Sadar Upazila to evaluate the salinity hazard and suitability for irrigation purposes. Both surface and groundwater of the study area maintained the trend of Cl− > SO42− > PO43−. The cation trend in both surface and groundwater of the study area was Na+ > K+ > Ca2+ > Mg2+ > Fe. Correlation matrices and principal component analysis (PCA) confirmed the stress of salinity from elevated electrical conductivity and total dissolved solids (TDS) with Na+, K+, Cl− and total hardness (TH) in relation to Ca2+, Mg2+, PO43− and SO42−. Salinity hazard classification and Wilcox diagram for irrigation water classification demonstrate that shallow tube wells containing low alkali and low sodium hazard are an excellent source of irrigation waters and fall under good to fair class of water (55 % samples). Higher TH, sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), soluble sodium percentage (SSP) and other important analysis indicated that most of the surface water and DTW were not suitable for irrigation. Therefore, the best irrigation water quality was from STW. Nevertheless, to sustainably and efficiently utilize the existing water resources, cyclic conjunctive uses of river water, STW and DTW as well as excavation of pond to store rainwater were suggested.

Abstract:Salinity, both in soil and water, is a ubiquitous problem in coastal Bangladesh, particularly in the southwest. Salinity varies at the local scale (5–10 m), but the relative roles of land use and surface geology on salinity variation in near-surface (< 5 m) groundwater are not fully understood. Surface geology, land use and salinity in near-surface (ca. 3 m) groundwater at two small sites (each 0.05 km2) were explored in the southwest coastal region of Bangladesh. The sediments in the near-surface at both sites are fine and hydrometer analyses of cored samples indicate the dominance of silty clay (70%) along with very fine sand (5%), sandy clay (15%) and clay (10%) materials. Salinity variation in near-surface groundwater tends to follow land use rather than surface geology at the scale of our investigations. The study provides evidence of the influence of land use on the near-surface salinity variation and indicates the importance of land-use planning in salinity management in coastal areas.

Abstract:Salinization has become a rising global concern due to its notable effects on agriculture and freshwater resources. Coastal region of Bangladesh has been struggling with elevated levels of soil and water salinity, exacerbated by storm surges and rising sea levels. We assessed nutrient and salinity contents in agricultural and homestead lands, and the level of salinity in pond and canal water in six sub-districts in coastal Bangladesh. Finally, using Household (HH) survey, Focus Group Discussion (FGD) and Key Informant Interview (KII), we explored the adaptive practices and challenges of salinity issues in agriculture and drinking water management. Soil nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium contents exhibited significant variations across the sub-districts, which reflect the diversity of agricultural practices and soil management strategies. However, there was no notable difference in soil salinity across the sub-districts, which underscores the commonality of soil salinity as a pressing concern. Shyamnagar (13.99 dS m-1) recorded the highest level of pond water salinity, followed by Assasuni (13.96 dS m-1), Dacope (13.91 dS m-1), Koyra (13.58 dS m-1), Morrelganj (13.33 dS m-1), and Mongla (13.19 dS m-1) sub-districts, which highlights that water salinity decreased from exposed coast to the landward areas. Respondents in HH surveys, FGDs and KIIs identified salinity as a major challenge in agriculture and drinking water. Furthermore, climate-related stresses were recognized as significant challenges impacting crop productivity. The research highlights the feasibility of rainwater harvesting, with 89-100% of HHs harvest rainwater in HH tanks, as an effective adaptive practice for managing drinking water. The study emphasizes the positive impact of vermicompost in reducing soil salinity levels, which is demonstrated by the 43-88% of HHs using this practice, indicating its potential as a nature-based solution to address soil salinization. The findings underscore the need for resilient agricultural systems and sustainable water management approaches to tackle these challenges.

Abstract:Access to irrigation water is pivotal for dry season crops in the coastal saline regions of Bangladesh. This research investigates strategic measures aimed at ensuring water availability for polder agricultural purposes in the dry season. This study was performed from 2017 to 2022 to assess the water availability inside polders # 30 and # 31 in Khulna region of the south‐western coastal zone of Bangladesh. Our methodology encompassed diverse approaches: identifying optimal water sources, capturing low‐salinity water for agriculture, implementing crop–soil–water management to enhance cropping intensity, employing irrigation modelling for effective crop planning, utilizing GIS techniques to estimate water storage and conducting impact analysis using satellite images. Irrigation by trapped river water increased the yield of different crops by 13–56% compared with that of farmer‐managed plots. Polders # 30 and # 31 currently have approximately 136 and 190 km of good canals, which store 334 and 502 ha‐m of water, respectively, during the dry period. With the existing stored fresh water, a maximum of 6,680 ha and 10,040 ha of watermelon and a minimum of 334 and 502 ha of boro rice cultivation were possible in polders # 30 and # 31, respectively. However, the excavation of poor and dead canals could increase freshwater storage and crop coverage. The image analysis of polder #31 revealed an increase in crop coverage of 238% from 2017 to 2022, which might be attributed to the introduction of advanced water management technologies and salt‐tolerant cultivars as well as holistic extension approaches by different government organizations (GOs), non‐governmental organizations (NGOs) and farmers. This study will assist in formulating pathways for polder‐scale water management and cropping intensification in coastal saline zones. Résumé L'accès à l'eau d'irrigation est essentiel pour les cultures de saison sèche dans les régions salines côtières du Bangladesh. Cette recherche examine des mesures stratégiques prises pour assurer la disponibilité en eau à des fins agricoles dans les polders pendant la saison sèche. Cette étude a été réalisée de 2017 à 2022 pour évaluer la disponibilité en eau à l'intérieur des polders n° 30 et n° 31 dans la région de Khulna, dans la zone côtière du sud‐ouest du Bangladesh. Notre méthodologie comprenait diverses approches: l'identification des sources en eau optimales, la reprise de l'eau à faible salinité pour l'agriculture, la mise en œuvre de la gestion des cultures, du sol et de l'eau pour améliorer l'intensité des cultures, l'utilization de la modélisation de l'irrigation pour une planification efficace des cultures, l'utilization des techniques SIG pour estimer le stockage de l'eau, et la réalisation d'une analyse d'impact à l'aide des images satellitaires. L'irrigation par l'eau piégée des rivières a augmenté le rendement des différentes cultures de 13 à 56% par rapport à celui des parcelles gérées par les agriculteurs. Les polders n° 30 et n° 31 possèdent actuellement environ 136 et 190 km de canaux en bon état, qui stockent 334 et 502 ha‐m de l'eau respectivement pendant la période sèche. Avec l'eau douce stockée existante, un maximum de 6,680 ha et 10,040 ha de pastèque et un minimum de 334 et 502 ha de riziculture boro ont été possibles dans les polders n ° 30 et n ° 31, respectivement. Cependant, le creusement de canaux pauvres et morts pourrait accroître le stockage d'eau douce et la couverture des cultures. L'analyse des images du polder n° 31 a révélé une augmentation de la couverture des cultures de 238% de 2017 à 2022, ce qui pourrait être attribué à l'introduction de technologies avancées de la gestion de l'eau et de cultivars tolérants au sel, ainsi que des approches de vulgarization holistique par différentes organizations gouvernementales, organizations non gouvernementales et agriculteurs. Abstract:Abstract Soil salinity is a pressing issue for sustainable food security in coastal regions. However, the coupling of machine learning and remote sensing was seldom employed for soil salinity mapping in the coastal areas of Bangladesh. The research aims to estimate the soil salinity level in a southwestern coastal region of Bangladesh. Using the Landsat OLI images, 13 soil salinity indicators were calculated, and 241 samples of soil salinity data were collected from a secondary source. This study applied three distinct machine learning models (namely, random forest, bagging with random forest, and artificial neural network) to estimate soil salinity. The best model was subsequently used to categorize soil salinity zones into five distinct groups. According to the findings, the artificial neural network model has the highest area under the curve (0.921), indicating that it has the most potential to predict and detect soil salinity zones. The high soil salinity zone covers an area of 977.94 km 2 or roughly 413.51% of the total study area. According to additional data, a moderate soil salinity zone (686.92 km 2 ) covers 30.56% of Satkhira, while a low soil salinity zone (582.73 km 2 ) covers 25.93% of the area. Since increased soil salinity adversely affects human health, agricultural production, etc., the study's findings will be an effective tool for policymakers in integrated coastal zone management in the southwestern coastal area of Bangladesh.
Hydrogeochemical characterization and quality assessment of groundwater resource in Savar - an industrialized zone of Bangladesh

Abstract:Savar Upazila in the Dhaka District is a rapidly expanding city with a diverse range of industries and agricultural activities. This expansion poses environmental challenges including the threat to groundwater contamination. Based on these considerations, the objective of this research is to carry out a shallow groundwater hydrogeochemical characterization and an assessment of the suitablity of the groundwater for drinking and irrigational purposes using a geochemical approach, multivariate statistical techniques, and some indices of groundwater quality. The hydrogeochemical analyses of 42 groundwater samples from shallow depths (18 - 76 m) showed that the order of concentrations of cations, anions, and metals was Ca2+ > Na+ > Mg2+ > K+, HCO3- > Cl- > SO42- > NO3-, and Cr > As > Pb > Mn > Fe, respectively. Weathering of silicates was found to be the most significant hydrogeochemical process governing the chemistry of groundwater. Cation exchange also plays a significant role in the evolution of the groundwater chemistry. Principal component analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis suggested that anthropogenic activities are influencing groundwater quality. A drinking water quality index map showed that about 91% of the groundwater samples were in the excellent category and suitable for human consumption, with only a few samples exceeding the standards of the WHO and Bangladesh for concentrations of Ca2+, Mg2+, HCO3-, Fe, Mn, and As. An analysis of irrigation quality parameters found that most of the groundwater samples were either excellent or good for agricultural uses, except for one sample in the Tetuljhora Union that was unsuitable based on residual sodium carbonate. This finding may be useful to local governments in understanding the current status of groundwater quality, tracking potential threats of contamination, and initiating appropriate measures for long-term groundwater resource management.

Abstract:Studies within the As-affected Bengal Basin have indicated that low-As groundwater can be found in a variety of geological and geomorphological settings. The hydrogeological environments that host low-As groundwater may be interpreted within a geological framework determined by the Quaternary evolution of the Bengal Aquifer System (BAS). This provides the basis for delineating the position and extent of shallow low-As groundwater, low-As groundwater in oxidised ‘red-bed’ sediments, and deep low-As groundwater. Data available on a national scale allow a preliminary delineation of these low-As groundwater environments across Bangladesh, based on empirical associations of low-As groundwater occurrences with topography, water table elevation, surface sediment lithology, geology and the screen depth of deep wells in low-As zones.

Abstract:Worldwide, the ever-increasing population and urbanization have put tremendous pressure on groundwater (GW). It has provoked the over-exploitation of groundwater and hindered the percolation of rainwater beneath the earth's surface in another way. The uncertainty of rainfall occurrence and over-exploitation of groundwater created the problem of water scarcity and decreased groundwater height significantly in the hard rock-dominated semi-arid regions. This study is designed to delineate groundwater potential zone (GWPZ) in the hard-rock terrain controlled Bankura district of West Bengal with the help of a knowledge-driven statistical technique, analytical hierarchy process (AHP), in remote sensing and GIS environment. The GWPZ map has been prepared by compiling nine groundwater controlling parameters: geology, geomorphology, slope, land use–land cover (LULC), rainfall, drainage density, soil texture, topographical wetness index (TWI) and lineament density. Among all the parameters, rainfall, geology, slope and LULC have played a dominant role in groundwater availability in the Bankura district, and the weightage of these parameters is 0.28, 0.20, 0.14 and 0.11, respectively. These four layers have facilitated to accumulation of groundwater potentiality in the Bankura district and surroundings. Our study of the GWPZ map revealed that 13.36, 33.80, 21.05, 19.02 and 12.77% of the area of the Bankura district is under very good, good, moderate, poor and very poor condition, respectively, for targeting GW in the future. Very high to high groundwater yielding spots are observed in valley fills, flood plains, vegetation-covered areas, agricultural land and low-lying areas of the study area. The result is evaluated by employing the receiver operation characteristics (ROC) and area under curve (AUC) technique using the well's yield groundwater data, and this value (0.757) also displayed the reliability of this work. However, the GWPZ map of the hard rock-dominated Bankura district has been delineated successfully; the findings of this study can be useful to the planners, engineers and policymakers for proper utilization, evaluation and management of groundwater in this water-scarce semi-arid region to ensure its sustainable development.

Abstract:The lack of quality water resources for irrigation is one of the main threats for sustainable farming. This pioneering study focused on finding the best area for farming by looking at irrigation water quality and analyzing its location using a fuzzy logic model on a Geographic Information System platform. In the tribal-prone areas of Khagrachhari Sadar Upazila, Bangladesh, 28 surface water and 39 groundwater samples were taken from shallow tube wells, rivers, canals, ponds, lakes, and waterfalls. The samples were then analyzed for irrigation water quality parameters like electrical conductivity (EC), total dissolved solids (TDS), sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), soluble sodium percentage (SSP), residual sodium bicarbonate (RSBC), magnesium hazard ratio (MHR), Kelley's ratio (KR), and permeability index (PI). Fuzzy Irrigation Water Quality Index (FIWQI) was employed to determine the irrigation suitability of water resources. Spatial maps for parameters like EC, KR, MH, Na%, PI, SAR, and RSBC were developed using fuzzy membership values for groundwater and surface water. The FIWQI results indicate that 100% of the groundwater and 75% of the surface water samples range in the categories of excellent to good for irrigation uses. A new irrigation suitability map constructed by overlaying all parameters showed that surface water (75%) and some groundwater (100%) in the northern and southwestern portions are fit for agriculture. The western and central parts are unfit for irrigation due to higher bicarbonate and magnesium contents. The Piper and Gibbs diagram also indicated that the water in the study area is magnesium-bicarbonate type and the primary mechanism of water chemistry is controlled by the weathering of rocks, respectively. This research pinpoints the irrigation spatial pattern for regional water resource practices, identifies novel suitable areas, and improves sustainable agricultural uses in tribal-prone areas.

Abstract:Deltas are areas where the land and ocean interact in a variety of ways and are an element of the coastal environment. These ecosystems possess unique biological diversity and has been attracting human settlements for centuries. However, deltaic regions are prone to recurring hazards. Soil and water in these regions are always under threat due to cyclonic storms and backwater flow in rivers and creeks. The quality of the soil and water in these regions has a major impact on agricultural output. Kultali block of South 24 parganas district in the state of West Bengal is the part of Sundarbans delta and agricultural activities in the area was difficult due to non-availability of the freshwater and salinity of soil and groundwater during non-monsoon season. Different farm structures were introduced for better management of water for agriculture in this region. A study was undertaken in Kultali block to assess the spatial variations in soil and groundwater salinity after introduction of those farm structures and suggesting the land and water utilization plan for better agricultural production. Observation wells at different locations and depths were installed for monitoring the groundwater in the area. The salinity of the soil and groundwater was monitored for evaluating seasonal change in soil and groundwater quality. The result of the study indicated that pre-monsoon soil and groundwater salinity was more than the post monsoon period. Groundwater salinity was increasing with the depth. Also, the areas near to the river and the creek showed higher salinity level than the rest of the plots in the study area. Soil and groundwater salinity and its spatial and temporal variation maps will be useful for planning agricultural activities in the area.

Abstract:The advent of geographic information system (GIS) and remote sensing (RS) tools has greatly helped in delineating the groundwater prospective zones for various watershed development and management. The origin, occurrence and migration of groundwater is dependent on many factors such as geomorphology, soil, geology, drainage density, slope, lineament, land use/land cover and rainfall. Thematic maps comprising of all these parameters along with water-level fluctuations have been prepared by using satellite image, water level data, along with ground truth and associated information. Based on these, a study was carried out for deciphering the groundwater prospective zones in Bankura district, West Bengal, India. A technique now common on GIS platforms—multi-influencing factor has been utilized in which ranks and weights were given to every criterion and statistically computed. For validation of the generated model bearing the groundwater prospective zones, fluctuation records of groundwater levels from various wells located in the study area and “groundwater potential yield data” were put to use. Finally, five classes of prospective groundwater zones have been identified namely: very good, good, moderate, poor and very poor zones. The potential zones have been determined by weighted overlay method using the ArcGIS 9.2 spatial analyst tool. While making the analysis, the ranking has been provided for each individual parameter of each thematic map and depending on their influence, weights have been assigned. It was noted that 18.36% (1248.81 km2) and 25.55% (1737.15 km2) of the study area is categorized under ‘very good’ and ‘good’ zone with respect to groundwater potentiality, respectively. Approximately 1988.66 km2 area covering around 29.24% of the study area has been categorized as ‘moderate’. ‘poor’ and ‘very poor’ groundwater prospective zones cover an area of 21.06% (1432.44 km2) and 5.79% (392.94 km2) of the total study area, respectively. The result thus obtained have been verified by collected yield data from existing sources and getting confirmation on that the higher yield categories are falling within excellent groundwater potential zones where yield ranges from 20 to 40 l/s and lower values ranging from 8 to 11 l/s are falling within poor groundwater potential zones. Study like this is vital in the water resource development scheme as it will minimize the cost of time-consuming field studies.
