Abstract:Analysis of groundwater level fluctuations is critical to understanding groundwater system dynamics and the factors that cause groundwater level fluctuations. Although most of the earlier studies focused on time series trend analysis using typical non-parametric tests, groundwater level fluctuations in drought-prone areas of northern Bangladesh are still poorly understood. To this end, the present study aims to analyze groundwater level fluctuations from 1980 to 2019 and associated influencing factors on groundwater level oscillation using the modified Mann-Kendall test and Pearson's correlation method. Using GIS-based analytical hierarchical process (AHP) techniques, this study also identifies potential groundwater zones in the designated area. The result showed that 42.5% of monitoring wells had groundwater levels from 4.5 to 5.5 m during the pre-monsoon, whereas 57.5% had groundwater levels from 2.5 to 3.5 m during the monsoon in recent years. Based on the annual average groundwater level, the result showed that 62.5% of monitored wells had a declining trend, and 37.5% had an increasing trend from 2000 to 2019. A negative correlation was observed between groundwater level and rainfall in all monitoring wells, as the area's rainfall impacted the groundwater level fluctuations. There was also a substantial positive correlation between groundwater levels, extraction, and potential evapotranspiration. The groundwater potential zone mapping shows three primary groundwater prospect categories: poor (1.9%), moderate (34.16%), and excellent (63.94%). The findings will assist planners and policymakers in allocating groundwater resources in various sectors such as agriculture, drinking water, and industry.

Abstract:This study presents a novel approach to groundwater resource assessment and drought vulnerability, achieved through integrating cutting-edge deep-learning algorithms into a comprehensive framework. In regions susceptible to drought, ensuring groundwater availability is of paramount importance. Addressing this critical need, our research employs an ensemble of advanced algorithms, including long short-term memory, convolutional neural network, deep neural network, and recurrent neural network. These algorithms are further enhanced through optimization using a genetic algorithm to map groundwater potential zones (GWPZ). Leveraging model validation based on the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUCROC), the long short-term memory-genetic algorithm model emerges as the superior algorithm, boasting the highest values of AUCROC: 0.995 for training and 0.996 for testing). Utilizing this optimized model, this study developed the GWPZ map, subsequently overlaying it with established drought maps developed by the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council across distinct periods—Pre-Kharif, Kharif, and Rabi. The derived baseline GWPZ spatial distribution revealed five categories—very low (34.99%), low (27.67%), moderate (13.26%), high (11.71%), and very high (12.37%)—and their intersection with drought-prone regions, indicative of probabilities of drought occurrence ranging from very severe to low (15.14% to 24.69%). Moreover, employing the best-predicted model, this study projected future GWPZ for 2050 and 2100 using the coupled model intercomparison project 6 general circulation model data under the ambit of three distinct shared socioeconomic pathways (SSPs): SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5, and SSP5-8.5. Our findings suggested a contraction in the groundwater potential area by the end of the twenty-first century (2100). This pioneering integration sheds light on the intricate relationship between groundwater availability and drought susceptibility, furnishing invaluable insights for formulating targeted water resource management strategies. By amalgamating advanced computational techniques with geospatial analyses, this research contributes to a more comprehensive grasp of water resource dynamics within the context of escalating climate challenges. Consequently, it offers a foundation for informed decision-making and implementing sustainable water management practices in regions grappling with the dual challenges of groundwater scarcity and recurrent droughts.

Abstract:Vascular responses to acetylcholine (ACh) and calcium ionophore A23187 were characterized in the rings of canine basilar artery. In preparations precontracted to a stable plateau by 3×10-7 M 5-hydroxytryptamine or 3×10-6 M prostaglandin F2α, A23187 (10-9-10-7 M) elicited significant relaxation of the basilar rings when the endothelium was intact. The ability of a ring to relax in this manner depends upon the presence of the endothelium, according to the evidence obtained by scanning electron microscopy, and the same concentration of A23187 did not relax vascular tissues in which the endothelium was artificially disrupted. On the other hand, ACh (10-7-10-3 M) produced negligible relaxation of canine basilar artery with intact endothelium. Indomethacin pretreatment (1.5×10-5 M) did not affect the A23187-induced relaxation, whereas preincubation with the lipoxygenase inhibitors nordihydroguaiaretic acid (1.5×10-5 M) and AA861 (10-5 M) prevented its relaxant effect. These results suggest that endothelium-dependent relaxation of canine basilar artery by A23187 may be mediated by one or more noncyclooxygenase metabolites.
Quantitative analysis and modeling of groundwater flow using visual MODFLOW: a case from subtropical coal mine, northwest Bangladesh

Abstract:Despite being a vital agricultural zone and livable land for millions of people, the northwest region of Bangladesh is facing a scarcity of groundwater, which has become a major environmental stress in recent years. To this end, the present study intends to evaluate the current groundwater condition and simulate it to predict groundwater flow in the Phulbari and Parbatipur upazilas in the Dinajpur district of subtropical coal mine, northwest Bangladesh, by applying the Visual MODFLOW model. Water table data was analyzed to assess the linear trends of groundwater levels. The exploration of coal mining influenced the groundwater resources in the study area, where the groundwater table declined at a rate of 0.142 m/year. During the last 35 years (1985–2020), the groundwater table decreased by 2.28 m at Parbatipur Upazila. In Phulbari Upazila, the water table has been declining at a rate of 0.201 m/year and has declined by 4.58 m over the last 35 years. The average recharge and discharge of 658,207.56 m3/day and 658,209.81 m3/day, respectively, indicate a deficit in recharge of 2.25 m3/day or 2250 L/day in the study area. The prediction results show that the shortage of groundwater will increase to 246,375,000 L annually by 2050. The progressive decline of the groundwater table is possibly due to a lack of replenishment, overexploitation of groundwater resources, and underground coal mining impacts. Overall, the study will help in policy planning for sustainable water resource management, waste supply, environmental protection and disaster preparedness.

Abstract:The lack of quality water resources for irrigation is one of the main threats for sustainable farming. This pioneering study focused on finding the best area for farming by looking at irrigation water quality and analyzing its location using a fuzzy logic model on a Geographic Information System platform. In the tribal-prone areas of Khagrachhari Sadar Upazila, Bangladesh, 28 surface water and 39 groundwater samples were taken from shallow tube wells, rivers, canals, ponds, lakes, and waterfalls. The samples were then analyzed for irrigation water quality parameters like electrical conductivity (EC), total dissolved solids (TDS), sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), soluble sodium percentage (SSP), residual sodium bicarbonate (RSBC), magnesium hazard ratio (MHR), Kelley's ratio (KR), and permeability index (PI). Fuzzy Irrigation Water Quality Index (FIWQI) was employed to determine the irrigation suitability of water resources. Spatial maps for parameters like EC, KR, MH, Na%, PI, SAR, and RSBC were developed using fuzzy membership values for groundwater and surface water. The FIWQI results indicate that 100% of the groundwater and 75% of the surface water samples range in the categories of excellent to good for irrigation uses. A new irrigation suitability map constructed by overlaying all parameters showed that surface water (75%) and some groundwater (100%) in the northern and southwestern portions are fit for agriculture. The western and central parts are unfit for irrigation due to higher bicarbonate and magnesium contents. The Piper and Gibbs diagram also indicated that the water in the study area is magnesium-bicarbonate type and the primary mechanism of water chemistry is controlled by the weathering of rocks, respectively. This research pinpoints the irrigation spatial pattern for regional water resource practices, identifies novel suitable areas, and improves sustainable agricultural uses in tribal-prone areas.

Abstract:Worldwide, the ever-increasing population and urbanization have put tremendous pressure on groundwater (GW). It has provoked the over-exploitation of groundwater and hindered the percolation of rainwater beneath the earth's surface in another way. The uncertainty of rainfall occurrence and over-exploitation of groundwater created the problem of water scarcity and decreased groundwater height significantly in the hard rock-dominated semi-arid regions. This study is designed to delineate groundwater potential zone (GWPZ) in the hard-rock terrain controlled Bankura district of West Bengal with the help of a knowledge-driven statistical technique, analytical hierarchy process (AHP), in remote sensing and GIS environment. The GWPZ map has been prepared by compiling nine groundwater controlling parameters: geology, geomorphology, slope, land use–land cover (LULC), rainfall, drainage density, soil texture, topographical wetness index (TWI) and lineament density. Among all the parameters, rainfall, geology, slope and LULC have played a dominant role in groundwater availability in the Bankura district, and the weightage of these parameters is 0.28, 0.20, 0.14 and 0.11, respectively. These four layers have facilitated to accumulation of groundwater potentiality in the Bankura district and surroundings. Our study of the GWPZ map revealed that 13.36, 33.80, 21.05, 19.02 and 12.77% of the area of the Bankura district is under very good, good, moderate, poor and very poor condition, respectively, for targeting GW in the future. Very high to high groundwater yielding spots are observed in valley fills, flood plains, vegetation-covered areas, agricultural land and low-lying areas of the study area. The result is evaluated by employing the receiver operation characteristics (ROC) and area under curve (AUC) technique using the well's yield groundwater data, and this value (0.757) also displayed the reliability of this work. However, the GWPZ map of the hard rock-dominated Bankura district has been delineated successfully; the findings of this study can be useful to the planners, engineers and policymakers for proper utilization, evaluation and management of groundwater in this water-scarce semi-arid region to ensure its sustainable development.

Abstract:Groundwater resources (GWR) play a crucial role in agricultural crop production, daily life, and economic progress. Therefore, accurate prediction of groundwater (GW) level will aid in the sustainable management of GWR. A comparative study was conducted to evaluate the performance of seven different ML models, such as random tree (RT), random forest (RF), decision stump, M5P, support vector machine (SVM), locally weighted linear regression (LWLR), and reduce error pruning tree (REP Tree) for GW level (GWL) prediction. The long-term prediction was conducted using historical GWL, mean temperature, rainfall, and relative humidity datasets for the period 1981–2017 obtained from two wells in the northwestern region of Bangladesh. The whole dataset was divided into training (1981–2008) and testing (2008–2017) datasets. The output of the seven proposed models was evaluated using the root mean square error (RMSE), mean absolute error (MAE), relative absolute error (RAE), root relative squared error (RRSE), correlation coefficient (CC), and Taylor diagram. The results revealed that the Bagging-RT and Bagging-RF models outperformed other ML models. The Bagging-RT models can effectively improve prediction precision as compared to other models with RMSE of 0.60 m, MAE of 0.45 m, RAE of 27.47%, RRSE of 30.79%, and CC of 0.96 for Rajshahi and RMSE of 0.26 m, MAE of 0.18 m, RAE of 19.87%, RRSE of 24.17%, and 0.97 for Rangpur during training, and RMSE of 0.60 m, MAE of 0.40 m, RAE of 24.25%, RRSE of 29.99%, and CC of 0.96 for Rajshahi and RMSE of 0.38 m, MAE of 0.24 m, RAE of 23.55%, RRSE of 31.77%, and CC of 0.95 for Rangpur during testing stages, respectively. Our study offers an effective and practical approach to the forecast of GWL that could help to formulate policies for sustainable GWR management.

Abstract:Und erstanding the sources and mechanisms of aquifer recharge is critical for water resource management. So far, this is the first comprehensive study to explore the sources and mechanisms of groundwater recharge applying stable environmental isotopes and hydrogeochemical properties in Southwestern Bangladesh. Water samples from the different sources (groundwater, surface (pond), river and rain water) of high arsenic (As) Holocene aquifers were used to investigate the chemical tracers and environmental stable isotopes (δ18O and δ2H) to explore the hydrogeological features, groundwater recharge sources, mechanisms and processes. The analytical results showed high As concentration in water samples observed 590.7 μg/L. High As groundwater was identified by a low pH value, medium HCO3- and TDS with low concentration of NO3- and SO42-. However, depleted δ2H and δ18O signatures indicated that local vertical rainfall is the key source to recharge groundwater in study area. The recharge process from pond seepage and irrigation return flow also contribute in groundwater recharge. Isotopic signatures suggested the vertical connectivity amongst the aquifers and significant vertical recharge. The reduced heavier isotope reveals extra recharging from floods of mountains and high altitude. Due to the heterogeneous and anisotropic structure of the aquifer system the spatial variability of δ2H and δ18O shows limited lateral connectivity. The combined analyses of δ2H isotope and Cl- ion showed that evaporation is the primary cause for groundwater discharge. Based on the spatial and vertical recharge processes of groundwater, present study provides a crucial baseline knowledge for establishing a sustainable groundwater management strategy. The findings from this study can guide the development of targeted groundwater management strategies and improvement of understanding the groundwater recharge sources and processes.

Abstract:Groundwater is an essential natural resource that sustains numerous ecological systems and human lifestyles. The Jhargram district is facing persistent groundwater development issues, requiring comprehensive monitoring and planning, as most farmers heavily rely on groundwater for crop production. The groundwater potential zone of the Jhargram district was classified into five classes, viz., very high (5.82%), high (50.81%), moderate (30.33%), low (13.01%), and very low (0.03%), zones, respectively. The results were assessed for validity using ROC curves, which demonstrated an accuracy rate of 80.4%. The calculation of the AUC was performed in order to assess the overall accuracy of the predicted GWPZ. The GWPZ map is crucial for implementing artificial recharge structures like percolation ponds, bunds and trenching in semi-arid regions. It aids in developing sustainable groundwater management policies, mitigating drought, climate change, and water scarcity, and aiding farmers, regional planners, policy-makers, climate change experts, and local governments.

Abstract:The southwestern coastal region of Bangladesh has a severe problem of extracting groundwater due to salinity intrusion. This study aims at the vulnerability assessment of the shallow aquifer of such a salinity-affected region of coastal Bangladesh. GIS-based DRASTIC Index method has been applied in Bagerhat Sadar, Fakirhat and Rampal Upazila which accounts parameters like Depth to the water table, net Recharge, Aquifer media, Soil media, Topography, Impact of the vadose zone, and hydraulic Conductivity. Finally, the mapping of the DRASTIC Index has been resulted in low-, moderate- and high-vulnerable zones. This study reveals that about 85.43% area which is 656.85 km2 is exposed to moderate vulnerability. Only 7.88% area is under low risk, whereas 6.69% area is highly vulnerable. Fortunately, the southwestern part which is adjacent to the coast has a comparatively low vulnerability. The northeastern region which carries the urban area is characterized by highly vulnerable zones. Moderate- and high-vulnerable zones imply more accessibility of saline surface water to the ground.

Abstract:Due to a heavy reliance on groundwater, Bangladesh is experiencing a severe decline in groundwater storage, with some areas even facing land subsidence. This study aims to investigate the relationship between groundwater storage changes and land subsidence in Bangladesh, utilizing a combination of GRACE and InSAR technologies. To clarify this relationship from a macro perspective, the study employs GRACE data merged with GLDAS to analyze changes in groundwater storage and SBAS-InSAR technology to assess land subsidence. The Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) method calculates the similarity between groundwater storage and land subsidence time series, incorporating precipitation and land cover types into the data analysis. The findings reveal the following: (1) Groundwater storage in Bangladesh is declining at an average rate of −5.55 mm/year, with the most significant declines occurring in Rangpur, Mymensingh, and Rajshahi. Notably, subsidence areas closely match regions with deeper groundwater levels; (2) The similarity coefficient between the time series of groundwater storage and land subsidence changes exceeds 0.85. Additionally, land subsidence in different regions shows an average lagged response of 2 to 6 months to changes in groundwater storage. This study confirms a connection between groundwater dynamics and land subsidence in Bangladesh, providing essential knowledge and theoretical support for further research.

Abstract:Savar Upazila in the Dhaka District is a rapidly expanding city with a diverse range of industries and agricultural activities. This expansion poses environmental challenges including the threat to groundwater contamination. Based on these considerations, the objective of this research is to carry out a shallow groundwater hydrogeochemical characterization and an assessment of the suitablity of the groundwater for drinking and irrigational purposes using a geochemical approach, multivariate statistical techniques, and some indices of groundwater quality. The hydrogeochemical analyses of 42 groundwater samples from shallow depths (18 - 76 m) showed that the order of concentrations of cations, anions, and metals was Ca2+ > Na+ > Mg2+ > K+, HCO3- > Cl- > SO42- > NO3-, and Cr > As > Pb > Mn > Fe, respectively. Weathering of silicates was found to be the most significant hydrogeochemical process governing the chemistry of groundwater. Cation exchange also plays a significant role in the evolution of the groundwater chemistry. Principal component analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis suggested that anthropogenic activities are influencing groundwater quality. A drinking water quality index map showed that about 91% of the groundwater samples were in the excellent category and suitable for human consumption, with only a few samples exceeding the standards of the WHO and Bangladesh for concentrations of Ca2+, Mg2+, HCO3-, Fe, Mn, and As. An analysis of irrigation quality parameters found that most of the groundwater samples were either excellent or good for agricultural uses, except for one sample in the Tetuljhora Union that was unsuitable based on residual sodium carbonate. This finding may be useful to local governments in understanding the current status of groundwater quality, tracking potential threats of contamination, and initiating appropriate measures for long-term groundwater resource management.

Abstract:Abstract Groundwater is one of the fundamental sources of fresh water. Currently, the unequal distribution of groundwater poses a significant environmental crisis, leading to scarcity in certain regions and affecting the livelihood of living organisms worldwide. The present study introduces the Sub-Himalayan foothills Dooars, a highly populated and agriculturally based area. To delineate the groundwater potentiality eight different effective parameters have been employed such as slope, geomorphology, soil, LULC, lineament, rainfall, hydrogeology, and drainage density. For the process and development of these eight thematic layers, geographic information systems and satellite images (Landsat 8) have been used to give the normalized weight and rank value in each thematic layer and their sub-criteria. MCDA-AHP-based model is used for overlay analysis to delineate groundwater potentiality (GWPZ). After overlay analysis in ArcGIS 10.2.2 final groundwater potentiality map is further grouped into four potentiality zones, i.e., very high, high, moderate, and low potential zones. A very high potential zone encompasses 22.45 sq. km. in the southern portion of the selected study region. The high potential zone encompasses 1613.32 sq. km in the southeastern part, the moderate zone is covered by 1063.84 sq.km, and the 71.03 sq.km (2.56% area of the region) area is covered by the low potential zone. The available well data from CGWB have been utilized to assess the potential of groundwater in the district, ensuring originality and authentic validation. It is found that there is a correlation between the observed potentiality zone and existing well data. With the growing population in the Sub-Himalayan Dooars region, there has been a corresponding rise in the demand for water. Hence, this research would assist the authorities and policymakers in effectively managing the groundwater resources in the district.

Abstract:Droughts frequently occurring in India have significant societal, economic, and environmental effects. The lack of direct measurements of groundwater in location and time hinders quantitative methods to analyse the intricate nature of groundwater drought. This work used the datasets derived from the Gravity and Climate Experiment (GRACE and GRACE-FO) and Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS) to extensively analyse Groundwater Storage changes in the Lower Gangetic Basin (LGB) using unique hydrological parameters between the years 2003 and 2022. The analysis highlights that the GRACE-derived terrestrial water storage anomaly in the LGB decreased significantly (-12.12 mm/yr), and the amount of Groundwater Storage Anomaly (GWSA) decreased similarly (-10.80 mm/yr), while in the GRACE-FO period, a positive trend has been noticed in TWSA (33.96 mm/yr) and GWSA (64.8 mm/yr) respectively. A drought indicator called the GRACE-derived groundwater drought index (GGDI) has been computed for the entire LGB region. A traditional drought study viz. Standardised Precipitation Index (SPI) was performed over LGB to justify the results of the GGDI. The results from GGDI study effectively matched the periods of significant drought occurrences with the 12-month SPI time series. From the GGDI, this study examined groundwater drought's spatial distribution, temporal evolution, and trend (Modified Mann Kendall trend) aspects. According to research findings, the LGB experienced three major drought periods between 2009–2010, 2019 (moderate), and 2015–2016 (severe). The study offers reliable quantitative data on the evolution of GRACE-derived groundwater drought, which may add a new perspective to additional drought research in the densely populated study area, which depends majorly on agriculture, livestock and less skilled water-intensive industries such as leather and textile industries in a sub-tropical climate. This paradigm incorporates changes in groundwater resources caused by human activities and climate change, paving the way for measuring progress towards sustainable use and water security.

Prediction of arsenic concentration in groundwater of Chapainawabganj, Bangladesh: machine learning-based approach to spatial modeling

Abstract:Groundwater in northwestern parts of Bangladesh, mainly in the Chapainawabganj District, has been contaminated by arsenic. This research documents the geographical distribution of arsenic concentrations utilizing machine learning techniques. The study aims to enhance the accuracy of model predictions by precisely identifying occurrences of groundwater arsenic, enabling effective mitigation actions and yielding more beneficial results. The reductive dissolution of arsenic-rich iron oxides/hydroxides is identified as the primary mechanism responsible for the release of arsenic from sediment into groundwater. The study reveals that in the research region, alongside elevated arsenic concentrations, significant levels of sodium (Na), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), and calcium (Ca) were present. Statistical analysis was employed for feature selection, identifying pH, electrical conductivity (EC), sulfate (SO4), nitrate (NO3), Fe, Mn, Na, K, Ca, Mg, bicarbonate (HCO3), phosphate (PO4), and As as features closely associated with arsenic mobilization. Subsequently, various machine learning models, including Naïve Bayes, Random Forest, Support Vector Machine, Decision Tree, and logistic regression, were employed. The models utilized normalized arsenic concentrations categorized as high concentration (HC) or low concentration (LC), along with physiochemical properties as features, to predict arsenic occurrences. Among all machine learning models, the logistic regression and support vector machine models demonstrated high performance based on accuracy and confusion matrix analysis. In this study, a spatial distribution prediction map was generated to identify arsenic-prone areas. The prediction map also displays that Baroghoria Union and Rajarampur region under Chapainawabganj municipality are high-risk areas and Maharajpur Union and Baliadanga Union are comparatively low-risk areas of the research area. This map will facilitate researchers and legislators in implementing mitigation strategies. Logistic regression (LR) and support vector machine (SVM) models will be utilized to monitor arsenic concentration values continuously.
Deciphering prospective groundwater zones in Bankura district, West Bengal: a study using GIS platform and MIF techniques

Abstract:The advent of geographic information system (GIS) and remote sensing (RS) tools has greatly helped in delineating the groundwater prospective zones for various watershed development and management. The origin, occurrence and migration of groundwater is dependent on many factors such as geomorphology, soil, geology, drainage density, slope, lineament, land use/land cover and rainfall. Thematic maps comprising of all these parameters along with water-level fluctuations have been prepared by using satellite image, water level data, along with ground truth and associated information. Based on these, a study was carried out for deciphering the groundwater prospective zones in Bankura district, West Bengal, India. A technique now common on GIS platforms—multi-influencing factor has been utilized in which ranks and weights were given to every criterion and statistically computed. For validation of the generated model bearing the groundwater prospective zones, fluctuation records of groundwater levels from various wells located in the study area and “groundwater potential yield data” were put to use. Finally, five classes of prospective groundwater zones have been identified namely: very good, good, moderate, poor and very poor zones. The potential zones have been determined by weighted overlay method using the ArcGIS 9.2 spatial analyst tool. While making the analysis, the ranking has been provided for each individual parameter of each thematic map and depending on their influence, weights have been assigned. It was noted that 18.36% (1248.81 km2) and 25.55% (1737.15 km2) of the study area is categorized under ‘very good’ and ‘good’ zone with respect to groundwater potentiality, respectively. Approximately 1988.66 km2 area covering around 29.24% of the study area has been categorized as ‘moderate’. ‘poor’ and ‘very poor’ groundwater prospective zones cover an area of 21.06% (1432.44 km2) and 5.79% (392.94 km2) of the total study area, respectively. The result thus obtained have been verified by collected yield data from existing sources and getting confirmation on that the higher yield categories are falling within excellent groundwater potential zones where yield ranges from 20 to 40 l/s and lower values ranging from 8 to 11 l/s are falling within poor groundwater potential zones. Study like this is vital in the water resource development scheme as it will minimize the cost of time-consuming field studies.

Abstract:Groundwater is the fundamental component of the hydrological system that acts as a major factor in comprehensions of the physical processes in both the land surface and the atmosphere. Determining groundwater, which directly affects the agricultural productivity of semi-arid mountainous regions, is crucial. Mountain ecosystems, once abundant with flowing water, now face immense pressure from a changing climate, evident in the drying of springs and the diminishing flow of groundwater. Ensuring a steady flow of water, fair access to it, and responsible use are the cornerstones of a secure future for mountain communities. This study aims to assess the groundwater potential zones using remote sensing and a geospatial approach in the Mustang Valley's rural municipalities (Thasang and Gharapjhong). Nine factors were assigned to assess the groundwater potential map: slope, drainage density, lineament density, geology, soil, land use/land cover, rainfall, aspect, and soil moisture. The Bayesian weights of evidence model was used to delineate the groundwater potential zone. The study categorized groundwater potential across the region, creating five zones: very high, high, moderate, low, and very low. These zones covered 0.6 %, 12.4 %, 51.2 %, 35.5 %, and 0.3 % of the study area. The accuracy of the groundwater potential map was assessed by comparing its predictions with the actual locations of springs, using the area under the curve metric. The receiver operating characteristics curve analysis yielded an area under the curve of 0.7226, indicating a 72.26 % accuracy in predicting the presence of groundwater. The findings of this paper contribute to a better understanding of groundwater potential zones, which can support policymakers and planners for hydrological, meteorological, and crop planning applications in this climatically vulnerable region.

Abstract:Objective (1) To determine baseline demographic, geographic, clinical, and pathologic characteristics of patients who had transoral robotic surgery (TORS) for oropharyngeal cancer. (2) To analyze margin status and unplanned readmission after TORS versus nonrobotic surgery. Study Design Retrospective database review. Setting National Cancer Database (2010-2011). Subjects and Methods Searching the National Cancer Database for adults with oropharyngeal cancer, we identified 877 patients who had TORS and 4269 patients who had nonrobotic surgery. Outcomes of interest included likelihood of adjuvant therapy, margin status, and unplanned readmission. Statistical analysis included chi-square, t tests, and multivariate regression. Results From 2010 to 2011, there was a 67% increase in the use of TORS for oropharyngeal cancer. Compared with patients who had nonrobotic surgery, TORS patients were more likely to be at academic centers (80.8% vs 49.1%, P < .001), to have private insurance (62.2% vs 57.4%, P < .001), and to have human papilloma virus (HPV)–positive tumors (48.3% vs 27.1%, P < .001). TORS (odds ratio, 0.50; 95% CI, 0.39-0.63) and HPV positivity (odds ratio, 0.73; 95% CI, 0.53-0.99) were independently associated with decreased likelihood of adjuvant chemoradiation versus radiation therapy. TORS patients were less likely to have positive margins than were patients who had nonrobotic surgery (20.2% vs 31.0%, P < .001). High-volume TORS centers had lower rates of positive margins (15.8% vs 26.1%, P < .001) and unplanned readmissions (3.1% vs 6.1%, P < .03) than did low-volume centers. Conclusions TORS is being rapidly adopted by academic and community cancer centers. TORS is associated with a lower rate of positive margins than nonrobotic surgery, and high-volume centers have the lowest rates of positive margins and unplanned readmissions.
