Abstract:Lead is a common toxic heavy metal with harmful effects on the human body and is widely used in several industries. It can contaminate the environment by air and water emissions and can enter the human body through the respiratory tract, ingestion, or skin contact. Lead is considered as a persistent environmental pollutant, with a half-life of 30 days in the blood, and exists in the skeletal system for decades and causes damage to other systems. Biosorption is receiving increasing attention. Due to its high efficiency and economic value in removing heavy metals from the environment, a variety of biosorption methods can be used for the removal of heavy metals. Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strains were capable of attaching to both human skin stratum corneum HaCaT cells and human rectal cancer Caco-2 cells. NBM-04-10-001 and NBM-01-07-003 significantly reduced the secretion of IL-6 and IL-8 after coculture with HaCaT cells. In the immune response of RAW264.7 mouse macrophages, high bacterial counts reduced the concentrations of IL-6 and TNF-α in a dose-dependent manner. The results of animal experiments revealed that feeding lead solution exerted no effect on the animal's food intake, and feeding PURE LAC NBM11 powder could effectively remove lead content in the blood. The group fed with PURE LAC NBM11 powder showed significantly less damage and lesions to liver cells. The LAB powder developed in this study has the potential to bind metals, preventing them from entering the body and protecting the host. LAB can be an ideal strain for future bioadsorption chelators.
Immobilization of cadmium and lead by Lactobacillus rhamnosus GR-1 mitigates apical-to-basolateral heavy metal translocation in a Caco-2 model of the intestinal epithelium

Abstract:Heavy metals are highly toxic elements that contaminate the global food supply and affect human and wildlife health. Purification technologies are often too expensive or not practically applicable for large-scale implementation, especially in impoverished nations where heavy metal contamination is widespread. Lactobacillus rhamnosus GR-1 (LGR-1) was shown in previous work to reduce heavy metal bioaccumulation in a Tanzanian cohort of women and children through indeterminant mechanisms. Here, it was hypothesized that LGR-1 could sequester the heavy metals lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd), thereby reducing their absorption across intestinal epithelium. LGR-1 and other lactobacilli significantly reduced the amount of Pb and Cd in solution at all concentrations tested (0.5 mg/L - 50 mg/L) and exhibited sustained binding profiles over a 48-hour period. Relative binding efficiency of LGR-1 decreased as Pb concentration increased, with an absolute minimum binding threshold apparent at concentrations of 2 mg/L and above. Electron microscopy revealed that Pb formed irregular cell-surface clusters on LGR-1, while Cd appeared to form intracellular polymeric clusters. Additionally, LGR-1 was able to significantly reduce apical-to-basolateral translocation of Pb and Cd in a Caco-2 model of the intestinal epithelium. These findings demonstrate the absorbent properties of LGR-1 can immobilize Pb and Cd, effectively reducing their translocation across the intestinal epithelium in vitro. Oral administration of heavy metal-binding Lactobacillus spp. (many of which are known human symbionts and strains of established probiotics) may offer a simple and effective means to reduce the amount of heavy metals absorbed from foods in contaminated regions of the world.

Abstract:In order to avoid the secondary pollution of the toxic residue of chemical crosslinking agent accompanied by chemical hydrogel adsorbent and enhance the adsorption performance of physical hydrogel, chitosan/calcium alginate/bentonite (CTS/CA/BT) composite physical hydrogel was constructed. The formation mechanism and structure of the composite hydrogel were determined by FTIR, XRD and SEM. Adsorption performances of the hydrogel toward Pb2+, Cu2+ and Cd2+ in water under different condition as well as multi-ion competitive sorption were investigated. The adsorption processes were described with the canonical adsorption kinetics and isotherms models. With the utilization of XPS analysis and adsorption thermodynamics analysis, it was found that the adsorptions were spontaneous physico-chemical adsorptions. The results showed that the maximum adsorption capacity of the hydrogel for Pb2+, Cu2+ and Cd2+ reached up to 434.89, 115.30 and 102.38 mg·g−1, respectively, better than those of other physical hydrogels or chitosan/bentonite composite. Moreover, the composite hydrogel improved the collectability of bentonite and showed a good reusability. The modification of bentonite and the formation of hydrogel were completed simultaneously, which greatly simplifies the operation process compared with the prior similar works. These suggest that the CTS/CA/BT composite hydrogel has promising application prospects for removal of heavy metal ions from water.

Abstract:A simple approach for synthesizing a highly adsorbent composite was described for the uptake of heavy metal ions from wastewater. A simple approach for synthesizing a highly adsorbent composite was also described for the elimination of heavy metal ions from contaminated water. The nanocomposite was synthesized via a polymer grafting of chitosan on the activated carbon surface, followed by a stacking process with the layers of montmorillonite clay. The spectroscopic analyses were exploited to confirm the composite structure of the prepared materials. Various adsorption parameters, such as pH, initial concentration, and adsorption time, were assessed. The results showed that the adsorption capacity of the composite for Pb2+ ions increased as the pH increased until it reached pH 5.5. The maximum adsorption capacity was observed at an initial Pb2+ level of 20 mg/L and a contact time of 150 min. Kinetic models were evaluated, and the pseudo second-order model showed the best match. The adsorption isotherm data were processed by fitting the model with different isotherm behaviors, and the Langmuir isotherm was found to be the most suitable for the system. The maximum adsorption capacity for Pb2+ ion on the MMT/CS/AC composite was found to be 50 mg/g at pH 5.5. Furthermore, the composite maintained a high adsorption capability of 85% for five adsorption–desorption cycles. Overall, this composite is envisioned as an addition to the market of wastewater remediation technology due to its chemical structure, which provides influential functional groups for wastewater treatment.

Abstract:The presence of heavy metals in aqueous media threatens environmental safety and human health, so it is necessary to effectively remove them from wastewater. Through a simple preparation method, lignin ( LS) and montmorillonite ( MMT) were successfully prepared into efficient biosorbents. The prepared hydrogel not only has water absorption and pH-responsive swelling properties, but also has good removal effect on heavy metals. The maximum adsorption capacity of Cd ( II) ions was 587.14 mg / g. The maximum adsorption capacity of Zn (II) ions was 297.13 mg / g.The results of principal component analysis show that the adsorption process of heavy metals is in good agreement with different kinetic and isotherm models. The adsorption mechanism is proposed, which is related to the chemical properties between adsorbents. This study provides a promising and sustainable lignin-based composite hydrogel.

Abstract:Contaminations by heavy metals in the environment always exist as a mixture of both metal and metalloid. Thus, it is a challenge to simultaneously remove both components due to their adverse chemical behaviors. Herein, effective cadmium (Cd) and arsenic (As) removal in aqueous solution was achieved by use of a novel composite, which was synthesized by Bacillus sp. K1 loaded onto Fe3O4 biochar (MBB). The combination with Bacillus sp. K1 provided new biosorption sites such as amine and hydroxyl groups in the composite surface, which significantly increasing the removal capability of Cd(II) by 230% when compared with the raw magnetic biochar. Both competition and synergy effects were found in binary system. Adsorption of As(III) extended active sites for capturing Cd(II), which appeared on the surface of the MBB as type B ternary surface complexes. The maximum adsorption capacity of Cd(II) and As(III) reached 25.04 and 4.58 mg g−1 in a binary system, respectively. In summary, this environmentally friendly composite is promising for simultaneous Cd(II) and As(III) remediation.

Abstract:Soil and water contamination by potentially toxic metals (PTMs) has exerted adverse environmental impacts , which justifies studies of promising remediation alternatives. This article investigated the competitive sorption of cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn) onto peat , compost, and biochar derived from the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW), but its main innovation was the post-sorption assessment. The effects of contact time on competition between contaminants were systematically analyzed by batch experiments and the effectiveness of the sorption process was evaluated in desorption tests (H 2 O, HCl, NaOH, and NaCl) and sequential extraction. Kinetic data were well-fitted to pseudo-first-order (PFO) and pseudo-second-order (PSO) models and the intra-particle diffusion model revealed the existence of multiple linear regions, indicating the sorption process was controlled by a multi-step mechanism. The sorption capacities followed a biochar > compost > peat order, with biochar retaining more than 99% of Cd, Pb, and Zn in all samples. The general order of desorption percentage was peat > compost > biochar, with a below 0.60% biochar release, suggesting the importance of chemical processes. HCl solution (more acid pH) showed the highest release of previously sorbed contaminants and, therefore, can be employed for the reuse of sorbents (sorption/desorption cycles). The only exception was Pb desorption on biochar, with maximum release in NaOH solution. A negative Pearson correlation with F1 (acid-soluble/exchangeable fraction) for Cd and Zn and a positive one with the other steps were reported. Pb exhibited an opposite behavior, showing the highest sorption performances and the lowest desorption rates for all sorbents, justified by positive correlations with F4 (residual fraction) and negative ones with desorption. The findings suggest the evaluated sorbents, especially compost and biochar, can be effective materials in the simultaneous sorption of Cd, Pb, and Zn in wastewater, as well as an amendment for PTMs immobilization in contaminated soils.

Abstract:The Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) were used for the toxic diverse metal ions accumulation owing to their functional sites and complexation capabilities. Their intercalation with ligands like sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP) can enhance the active sites for heavy metal adsorption. Here, the Mg/Al-LDHs were inscribed with SHMP using the co-precipitation method to detoxify wastewater by removing lead (Pb 2+ ) and cadmium (Cd 2+ ). Mg/Al LDH-SHMP composite adsorbent was investigated using several instrumentations such as XRD, FT-IR, and FE-SEM-EDX for identifying the functional and morphological properties which are accountable for lead and cadmium cations adsorption. The adsorption was studied in a batch method to investigate the adsorption performance by optimizing pH, adsorbent dose, time of contact, concentration, and adsorption temperature. The adsorption isotherm, thermodynamics, kinetics of the adsorption progress, and mechanism were thoroughly investigated. The pseudo-second-order model gave the highest outcomes in terms of fitting the kinetic data, with the greatest correlation coefficient for both cations. The trend of isotherm was adjacent to the Langmuir model with the highest removal amount of 45.66 and 24.34 mgg −1 for Pb 2+ and Cd 2+ , respectively. The thermodynamic investigation exhibited that the adsorption reaction was spontaneous endothermic, and random in character. The capacity for absorption improved as a result of the higher temperature. Moreover, Pb 2+ and Cd 2+ accumulation onto the Mg/Al LDH-SHMP surface was plausible with surface complexations, isomorphic substitution, precipitation, and heavy metal chelation. The Mg/Al LDH-SHMP composite could be an ideal material for Pb 2+ and Cd 2+ accumulation from the wastewater for its high adsorption capacity and fast adsorption kinetics.

Abstract:Clay minerals can adsorb both microorganisms and heavy metals. In this study, typical soil bacterium, Enterobacter sp. was applied to investigate the potential protection of the bacterial cells from Pb2+ stress by clay minerals. The sorption by two representative types of montmorillonite (Mt) were contrasted, i.e., Mts/Mtw with strong/weak CEC. There was no significant difference between the two clay minerals regarding their adsorption of Pb2+ cations in water (i.e., ~55 mg L-1). However, the sorption of bacterial cells on the two clay minerals showed evident contrasts, which resulted in the different capacity of Pb sorption. Mts with high CEC preferentially adsorbed abundant bacterial cells (rather than Pb2+) on its surface. The residual Pb2+ concentration in solution actually raised by 7.5% after the addition of Enterobacter sp. In addition, both the Pb-contaminated cells and "healthy" cells (with low Pb contamination) could be adsorbed onto Mt surface, whereas the latter dominated the adsorbents on Mts. This was due to that the Mts with high CEC could provide more exchangeable cations, building more cation bridging ligands between the microbial cells (whatever the types of cells) and clay surface. Furthermore, the adsorbed "healthy" bacterial cells might escape from clay surface via "self-liberating" mechanism, i.e., increasing electrostatic repulsion between the bacteria and clay during microbial decomposition of the medium. This study hence elucidated the protection of microorganisms from Pb2+ stress by Mt.

Abstract:Immobilized microbial technology has recently emerged as a prominent research focus for the remediation of heavy metal pollution because of its superior treatment efficiency, ease of operation, environmental friendliness, and cost-effectiveness. This study investigated the adsorption characteristics and mechanisms of Cd2+ solutions by Lactobacillus plantarum adsorbed immobilized on distiller’s grains biochar (XIM) and Lactobacillus plantarum–encapsulated immobilized on distiller’s grains biochar (BIM). The findings reveal that the maximum adsorption capacity and efficiency were achieved at a pH solution of 6.0. Specifically, at an adsorption equilibrium concentration of cadmium at 60 mg/L, XIM and BIM had adsorption capacities of 8.40 ± 0.30 mg/g and 12.23 ± 0.05 mg/g, respectively. BIM demonstrated noticeably greater adsorption capacities than XIM at various cadmium solution concentrations. A combination of isothermal adsorption modeling, kinetic modeling, scanning electron microscopy–energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometer (XRD), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analyses showed that cadmium adsorption by XIM primarily involved physical adsorption and pore retention. In contrast, the adsorption mechanism of BIM was mainly attributed to the formation of Cd(CN)2 crystals.

Sorption of As, Cd, and Pb by soil amendments: in situ immobilization mechanisms and implementation in contaminated agricultural soils

Abstract:The contamination of agricultural soils by toxic heavy metals, such as As, Cd, and Pb, is of great concern for crop safety as well as environmental and public health. Various adsorbents for the in situ immobilization of these metals have been widely studied, but researches on the potential and superiority of metal adsorption in agricultural soil amendments are still lacking. This study was conducted to investigate the nature of their sorption processes on soil amendments including slaked lime (SL), phosphogypsum (PG), bone meal (BM), and biochar (BC) using a series of laboratory batch tests. The Langmuir adsorption isotherm was used to predict sorption parameters. The experimental data fitted reasonably well on the Langmuir model with high correlation coefficients (R2 = 0.64-0.99) suggesting that monolayer sorption/complexation/precipitation was the dominant mechanism. Among the amendments, SL achieved the highest maximum adsorption capacity (qmax) for As and Cd at 714.3 and 2000 mg g-1, respectively, while PG had the highest qmax for Pb at 196.08 mg g-1. The results indicate that there is no direct correlation between sorption stability and maximum adsorption capacity. Among the sorbents, BC had the highest sorption stability for As (0.007 L mg-1), Cd (0.121 L mg-1), and Pb (2.273 L mg-1), respectively, albeit the qmax values for these three metals were not high. This indicates that the As, Cd, and Pb sorbed on biochar tended to be more stable than those retained on other amendments. While a large sorption capacity is important, our results provide important insights into the metal sorption stability/energy of adsorbents that will aid in the development of long-term management efficiency strategies to rehabilitate metal-contaminated arable soils.

Abstract:Humic acid at high concentrations impacts microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) by inhibiting urease activity, reducing carbonate production and increasing organically bound cadmium, affecting cadmium immobilization efficiency. This study uniquely explores the combined effects of MICP and humic acid adsorption on cadmium remediation, revealing the inhibitory impact of humic acid on urease activity and MICP efficiency. These findings highlight the complex interplay between organic matter and biomineralization, paving the way for optimized remediation strategies. Heavy metal pollution, particularly cadmium, poses severe environmental and health risks due to its high toxicity and mobility, necessitating effective remediation strategies. While both microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) and humic acid adsorption are promising methods for heavy metal mitigation, their combined effects, particularly the influence of humic acid on the MICP process, have not been thoroughly investigated. This study explores the interaction between humic acid and MICP, revealing that humic acid significantly inhibits the MICP process by reducing urease activity, with the 10% humic acid treatment resulting in a 23.8% reduction in urease activity compared to the control. Additionally, while higher concentrations of humic acid did not significantly reduce cadmium ion concentrations, they did result in a slight increase in organically bound cadmium, indicating an interaction that could alter metal speciation in the soil. These findings provide important insights into the mechanisms by which humic acid affects MICP, offering a foundation for optimizing combined remediation approaches. Future research should aim to fine‐tune the balance between MICP and humic acid to enhance the overall efficiency of cadmium remediation strategies. This study contributes to the development of more effective and sustainable methods for addressing cadmium contamination.

Abstract:AIMS: The adsorption of lead ions from aqueous solution by macroporous Ca-alginate-lignin (MCAL) beads immobilized with Clostridium tyrobutyricum and free strains was evaluated.METHODS AND RESULTS: The effects of different factors including pH, adsorption time, adsorbent dosage and initial concentration of lead ions were explored. Different characterization methods were used to evaluate the adsorption process of lead ions. Meanwhile, the adsorption kinetics models and adsorption isotherm models were applied. The fitting results showed that the adsorption behaviour of C. tyrobutyricum immobilized in MCAL beads and free strains was better described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the adsorption process followed the Langmuir isotherm model. The maximum biosorption of lead ions by C. tyrobutyricum immobilized in MCAL beads and free strains was 144.9 and 106.4 mg/g respectively.CONCLUSIONS: The C. tyrobutyricum immobilized in MCAL beads proved to be practicable and had better adsorption effects on lead ions compared with the free strains.SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: The paper demonstrated a new insight and strategy for the effective treatment of lead ions from aqueous solutions by the novel function of C. tyrobutyricum.

Abstract:Interactions between silicate bacteria and silicates are very common in nature and hold great potential in altering their mutual physicochemical properties. But their interactions in regulating contaminants remediation involving performance and mechanisms are often overlooked. Here, we focused on the interactions between silicate bacteria ( Paenibacillus polymyxa , PP; Bacillus circulans , BC) and a soil silicate montmorillonite (Mt), and their impact on Cd(II) immobilization. The obtained results showed that Mt greatly promoted the growth of the bacteria, resulting in a maximum 10.31 times increase in biomass production. In return, the bacteria strongly enhanced the Cd(II) adsorption on Mt, with adsorption capacities increased by 80.61%–104.45% in comparison to the raw Mt. Additionally, the bacteria-Mt interaction changed Cd(II) to a more stabilized state with a maximum reduction of 38.90%/g Mt in bioavailability. The enhancement of Cd(II) adsorption and immobilization on the bacterial modified Mt was caused by the following aspects: (1) the bacteria activities altered the aggregation state of Mt and made it better dispersed, thus more active sites were exposed; (2) the microbial activities brought about more rough and crumpled surface, as well as smaller Mt fragments; (3) a variety of microbial-derived functional groups were introduced onto the Mt surface, increasing its affinity for heavy metals; (4) the main Cd(II) immobilization mechanism was changed from ion exchange to the combination of ion exchange and functional groups induced adsorption. This work elucidates the potential ecological and evolutionary processes of silicate bacteria-soil clay mineral interactions, and bears direct implications for the clay-mediated bioremediation of heavy metals in natural environments.

Abstract:The aim of this study is removing chromium(VI) and arsenic(III) from water and wastewater using montmorillonite clay/Al-Mg layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanocomposite. TEM, FT-IR, Mapping/FESEM, EDX, BET, and XRD analyses were utilized for studying the characterization of the aforementioned sorbent. According to the results, the best pH values for uptake of Cr(VI) and As(III) were obtained at pH 2 and 7, respectively, which in these conditions, the highest sorption yield of Cr(VI) and As(III) were 98.36% and 95.76%, respectively. Also, the equilibrium and kinetic study of the adsorption process illustrated that the Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model are better able to express the absorption process. According to the Langmuir model, the highest sorption capacity of montmorillonite clay/Al-Mg LDH in adsorbing As(III) and Cr(VI) ions was 34.1 and 37.6 mg g −1 , respectively. Furthermore, the sorption capacity of As(III) and Cr(VI) ions obtained using the PFO model was lower than the PSO model. Moreover, the uptake of As(III) and Cr(VI) ions utilizing montmorillonite clay/Al-Mg LDH is physical, favorable, thermosetting (ΔH° 80% for each ion separately). Eventually, montmorillonite clay/Al-Mg LDH was able to eliminate BOD 5 , COD, As(III), and Pb(II) from a real effluent with considerable efficiencies.

Abstract:Lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) are toxic pollutants that are prevalent in wastewater and pose a serious threat to the natural environment. In this study, a new immobilized bacterial microsphere (CYB-SA) was prepared from corn stalk biochar and Klebsiella grimontii by sodium alginate encapsulation and vacuum freeze-drying technology. The removal effect of CYB-SA on Pb(II) and Cd(II) in a monometallic contaminated solution was studied. The results showed that the removal of Pb(II) and Cd(II) by CYB-SA was 99.14% and 83.35% at a dosage of 2.0 g/L and pH = 7, respectively, which was 10.77% and 18.58% higher than that of biochar alone. According to the Langmuir isotherm model, the maximum adsorption capacities of Pb(II) and Cd(II) by CYB-SA at 40 °C were 278.69 mg/g and 71.75 mg/g, respectively. A combination of the kinetic model, the isothermal adsorption model, scanning electron microscopy–energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analyses showed that the main adsorption mechanisms of CYB-SA encompass functional group complexation, ion exchange, electrostatic attraction and physical adsorption. The findings of this study offer practical and theoretical insights into the development of highly efficient adsorbents for heavy metals.

Abstract:Abstract In this study, the nanocomposites from biomass (soybean straw) and layered double hydroxides (LDHs), denoted as B/LDHs, were fabricated using the mechanical-hydrothermal method. The obtained B/LDHs nanocomposites were characterized by TEM, SEM, FT-IR, and N 2 adsorption–desorption techniques. Adsorption of the heavy-metal ions Pb( ii ) on the B/LDHs was determined at 25°C and pH 6.0 using a batch technique. The experimental results demonstrated that biomass contributed to the sorption process. The pseudo-second-order, Langmuir, and Freundlich models well fitted the sorption process, indicating chemisorption and monolayer adsorption were the main adsorption mechanisms. Meanwhile, it is found that there is an obvious effect of adsorbent concentration in the studied adsorption system. In comparison with soybean straw and Mg–Al LDHs, the B/LDHs nanocomposites exhibit significantly enhanced sorption capacities. It is evident from this study that the construction of B/LDHs nanocomposites is an effective strategy for improving the sorption capacity of LDHs, and the modified LDH-based adsorbent shows a good potential in the removal of heavy metals from water. More importantly, it solves the problem of a large number of agricultural waste disposals. And, it achieved the goal of a win-win situation.

Abstract:Extensive research in recent years has explored the realm of porous carbon composites for various applications, including electrochemistry, structural materials, environmental remediation, and more. In particular, the fabrication of porous carbon composites using a metal-organic framework (MOF) and biochar (BC) for aqueous remediation is a fairly new avenue of research. In this study, a MOF-BC composite was synthesized with unmodified and chemically modified BCs using solvothermal synthesis. The composites were used as adsorbents to remediate heavy metals, such as lead (II) and chromium (VI), from aqueous environments. It was verified that the MOF was homogeneously deposited onto the BC's surface using various material characterization techniques. Lead and chromium adsorption studies revealed a high adsorption capacity with greater than 99% removal for lead and ∼65% for chromium, respectively. Impressively, for lead, the highest observed experimental adsorption capacity of the MOF-chemically modified BC composite was 535 mg/g, compared to 240 mg/g for pristine BC. Meanwhile, the adsorption capacity of the same MOF-BC composite for chromium ions was low at 18 mg/g, compared to 80 mg/g for the chemically modified BC. The MOF-BC had a rapid adsorption rate, achieving equilibrium at only 150 min of reaction time for lead ions. MOF-BCs have higher adsorption for cationic lead through physisorption and ion-exchange mechanisms, whereas, for anionic chromium, removal is dominated only by physisorption mechanisms. The outcomes and methodological developments attained in this study offer a novel and compelling approach for synthesizing MOF-BC composites for aqueous remediation applications.

Abstract:Carbon dots and their derivatives with fascinating photoluminescence properties have recently attracted tremendous scientific attention. This work describes the preparation of novel fluorescent bentonite clay (B), modified with carbon dot nanomaterials (CDs), and its usage as a lead removal platform. The CDs were prepared using a hydrothermal method from graphitic waste which served as the carbon source material. The as-obtained CDs were found to be fluorescent, being spherical in shape, positively charged, and smaller than 5 nm. Encouraged by their structure and photoluminescence features, they were used as surface modifiers to make fluorescent bentonite nanocomposites. Bentonite was used as a negatively charged model of aluminosilicate and reacted with the positively charged CDs. XRD, FTIR, XPS, and fluorescence analysis were used to characterize the prepared materials. The results indicate that the CDs intercalated inside the bentonite matrix were stable with excellent optical properties over time. They were finally used as an efficient hybrid platform for lead removal with a removal efficiency of 95% under light conditions, at room temperature, in an alkaline medium, and after only 10 min of reaction, compared to 70% under dark conditions. The pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir isotherm models were better fitted to describe the adsorption process. The maximum adsorption capacity was equal to 400 mg g −1 toward Pb( II ) removal, at room temperature and pH = 8, under light conditions. To summarize, we have designed UV light stimuli responsive carbon dot-intercalated clay with high Pb( II ) adsorption capacity and long-term stability.
