Abstract:The discovery of the sex chromatin body (Barr & Bertram, 1949) was quickly applied to clinical problems and stimulated research in a number of fields. Its uses have included a role as a cell marker in determining the source of infiltrating cells (Yoshi, Jolley & Hinshaw, 1963), fibroblasts (Bieber et al. 1970; Bohle & Fischbach, 1970) and vascular endothelium (Bieber et al. 1970; Bohle & Fischbach, 1970; Williams & Alvarez, 1969) intissue and organ transplants. The sexing ofvascularendothelium has usually been performed by preparing sheets of cells from large vessels by the 'Hautchen' technique (Poole, Sanders & Florey, 1958) for enface examination. It was decided to investigate the possibility of nuclear sexing in the endothelium of parenchymal blood vessels, for which, because of their size, the 'Hautchen' technique is not appropriate. This limitation obviously applies to small arteries, arterioles, capillaries, and small veins within organs and tissues. An ability to sex small vessel endothelium could be useful in several fields and would be particularly applicable to the study of the fate of endothelial cells lining vessels within organ allografts. At the present time study of graft endothelium has been limited to the lining of the aorta or of large vessels inwhich thechanges are not necessarily representative of events occurring in the terminal ramifications of the vascular tree. This paper describes a method used for identifying small vessel endothelial sex chromatin and presents the results of counts in the endothelium of heart and kidney from man and five animal species.
Microbial weathering of montmorillonite and its implication for Cd(II) immobilization

Abstract:Interactions between silicate bacteria and silicates are very common in nature and hold great potential in altering their mutual physicochemical properties. But their interactions in regulating contaminants remediation involving performance and mechanisms are often overlooked. Here, we focused on the interactions between silicate bacteria ( Paenibacillus polymyxa , PP; Bacillus circulans , BC) and a soil silicate montmorillonite (Mt), and their impact on Cd(II) immobilization. The obtained results showed that Mt greatly promoted the growth of the bacteria, resulting in a maximum 10.31 times increase in biomass production. In return, the bacteria strongly enhanced the Cd(II) adsorption on Mt, with adsorption capacities increased by 80.61%–104.45% in comparison to the raw Mt. Additionally, the bacteria-Mt interaction changed Cd(II) to a more stabilized state with a maximum reduction of 38.90%/g Mt in bioavailability. The enhancement of Cd(II) adsorption and immobilization on the bacterial modified Mt was caused by the following aspects: (1) the bacteria activities altered the aggregation state of Mt and made it better dispersed, thus more active sites were exposed; (2) the microbial activities brought about more rough and crumpled surface, as well as smaller Mt fragments; (3) a variety of microbial-derived functional groups were introduced onto the Mt surface, increasing its affinity for heavy metals; (4) the main Cd(II) immobilization mechanism was changed from ion exchange to the combination of ion exchange and functional groups induced adsorption. This work elucidates the potential ecological and evolutionary processes of silicate bacteria-soil clay mineral interactions, and bears direct implications for the clay-mediated bioremediation of heavy metals in natural environments.

Abstract:Montmorillonite has been widely used in remediation of toxic metals. However, for the safety of the soil ecosystem, the impact of this technology on microorganisms is still unclear. Here, the influence of nano-montmorillonite on immobilization, accumulation of cadmium, and microbial activity in a soil–plant system was investigated. The results revealed that the nano-montmorillonite treatments reduced cadmium bioavailability and the uptake by oilseed rape. It was found that the addition of NMMT reduced the toxicity of Cd on soil microorganisms and improved enzyme activity. The nano-montmorillonite stimulated the relative abundance of Proteobacteria that was closely related to nutrient turnover in soil. In addition, the treatment with 0.5% addition of nano-montmorillonite significantly improved the microbial alpha diversity index and enhanced the relative abundance of Bacteroidetes and Planctomycetes . Thus, certain soil quality recovery occurred after the application of nano-montmorillonite. To successfully combine remediation and microbial effects, 0.5% nano-montmorillonite was recommended to be added to cadmium-contaminated soil to minimize the additional impact on the soil ecosystem.

Abstract:Considering the detrimental impact of heavy metals on agricultural soils, in situ remediation technology has gained considerable attention worldwide. Green materials have emerged as a promising option for enhancing plant-mediated remediation of contaminated soils. In this study, bacteria capable of mobilising cadmium (Cd) and promoting plant growth were screened and isolated. A synergistic system was established by combining bone meal and chitosan as soil amendments with the Cd-mobilising bacteria to improve the extraction of available Cd from soils by plants. The highest Cd accumulation was observed in the bone meal + bacteria, which increased by 131.81% when compared to the control group (CK). The highest available Cd content was observed in the chitosan + bacteria, which increased by 52.31% when compared to CK. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results revealed that organic compounds, such as hydroxyl and carboxyl groups, and aliphatic compounds in the soil were crucial in mobilising Cd. Cd activation occurred through substitution of protons in the functional groups and chelation, leading to the formation of chelates with Cd 2+ and in turn, facilitating Cd mobilisation in the soil. The incorporation of bone meal and chitosan into phytoremediation strategies can enhance the ability of bacteria to mobilise Cd, thereby increasing the effectiveness of phytoremediation.

Abstract:There is growing global interest in the bioremediation of cadmium (Cd) using combinations of biochar and microorganisms. However, the interactions among biochar, introduced and indigenous microorganisms remain unclear. Accordingly, a 90 day microcosm experiment was conducted to investigate this by adding Bacillus sp. K1 strain inoculated rice straw biochar (SBB) and magnetic straw biochar (MBB) into a Cd contaminated paddy soil from Hunan, China. All treatments were incubated aerobically (60% water holding capacity) or anaerobically for 90 d. During both soil incubations, Bacillus sp. K1 successfully colonized in soil with composites applications. Soil pH was significantly increased from acid to neutral, and available Cd decreased with the addition of both composites. The better remediation efficiency of MBB than SBB under anerobic conditions was attributed to the transformation of acetic acid-extractable Cd into the residual fraction, caused by Cd2+ bonding with crystal Fe3O4. The application of the two kinds of composites caused similar changes to both microbial communities. There was a slight decrease in indigenous microbial alpha diversity with the MBB aerobic application, while the total population number of bacteria was increased by 700%. Both the redundancy analysis and Mantel analyses indicated that pH and microbial biomass C contributed to the colonization of Bacillus sp. K1 with SBB under aerobic conditions, and with MBB under anerobic conditions, respectively. The research provides a new insight into interactive effects and investigates immobilization mechanisms involved of bacterial/biochar composites in anaerobic and aerobic soils.

Abstract:Humic acid at high concentrations impacts microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) by inhibiting urease activity, reducing carbonate production and increasing organically bound cadmium, affecting cadmium immobilization efficiency. This study uniquely explores the combined effects of MICP and humic acid adsorption on cadmium remediation, revealing the inhibitory impact of humic acid on urease activity and MICP efficiency. These findings highlight the complex interplay between organic matter and biomineralization, paving the way for optimized remediation strategies. Heavy metal pollution, particularly cadmium, poses severe environmental and health risks due to its high toxicity and mobility, necessitating effective remediation strategies. While both microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) and humic acid adsorption are promising methods for heavy metal mitigation, their combined effects, particularly the influence of humic acid on the MICP process, have not been thoroughly investigated. This study explores the interaction between humic acid and MICP, revealing that humic acid significantly inhibits the MICP process by reducing urease activity, with the 10% humic acid treatment resulting in a 23.8% reduction in urease activity compared to the control. Additionally, while higher concentrations of humic acid did not significantly reduce cadmium ion concentrations, they did result in a slight increase in organically bound cadmium, indicating an interaction that could alter metal speciation in the soil. These findings provide important insights into the mechanisms by which humic acid affects MICP, offering a foundation for optimizing combined remediation approaches. Future research should aim to fine‐tune the balance between MICP and humic acid to enhance the overall efficiency of cadmium remediation strategies. This study contributes to the development of more effective and sustainable methods for addressing cadmium contamination.

Abstract:Contaminations by heavy metals in the environment always exist as a mixture of both metal and metalloid. Thus, it is a challenge to simultaneously remove both components due to their adverse chemical behaviors. Herein, effective cadmium (Cd) and arsenic (As) removal in aqueous solution was achieved by use of a novel composite, which was synthesized by Bacillus sp. K1 loaded onto Fe3O4 biochar (MBB). The combination with Bacillus sp. K1 provided new biosorption sites such as amine and hydroxyl groups in the composite surface, which significantly increasing the removal capability of Cd(II) by 230% when compared with the raw magnetic biochar. Both competition and synergy effects were found in binary system. Adsorption of As(III) extended active sites for capturing Cd(II), which appeared on the surface of the MBB as type B ternary surface complexes. The maximum adsorption capacity of Cd(II) and As(III) reached 25.04 and 4.58 mg g−1 in a binary system, respectively. In summary, this environmentally friendly composite is promising for simultaneous Cd(II) and As(III) remediation.

Abstract:In this work, a novel and efficient magnesium ferrite-modified montmorillonite (MgFe2O4-MMT) compound was prepared. MgFe2O4-MMT and biochar were mixed at 0:10, 1:9, 3:7, 4:6, and 10:0 w/w combinations and were used for heavy metal immobilization in soil polluted with multiple heavy metals. MgFe2O4-MMT can significantly increase soil alkalinity, and it exhibited the most optimal effect in immobilization of heavy metals in soil. The amounts of Cd, Pb, Cu, and Zn that were extracted by the toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) decreased by 58.4%, 50.3%, 42.9%, and 24.7%, respectively. MgFe2O4-MMT can immobilize heavy metals through electrostatic interactions and cation exchange processes. Although, the immobilization of potentially toxic elements by MgFe2O4-MMT and biochar was inferior to that by MgFe2O4-MMT. The combined application of MgFe2O4-MMT and biochar dramatically increased the diversity and richness of the soil bacterial community. The Chao1 index for M3B7 treatment group was 1.7 and 1.2 times higher than that for the control and MgFe2O4-MMT treatment groups, respectively. The combination of biochar and MgFe2O4-MMT might be a cost-effective and ecological remediation approach for mild Pb and Cd contamination.

Abstract:The combination of biochar and bacteria is a promising strategy for the remediation of Cd-polluted soils. However, the synergistic mechanisms of biochar and bacteria for Cd immobilization remain unclear. In this study, the experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of the combination of biochar and Pseudomonas sp. AN-B15, on Cd immobilization, soil enzyme activity, and soil microbiome. The results showed that biochar could directly reduce the motility of Cd through adsorption and formation of CdCO 3 precipitates, thereby protecting bacteria from Cd toxicity in the solution. In addition, bacterial growth further induces the formation of CdCO 3 and CdS and enhances Cd adsorption by bacterial cells, resulting in a higher Cd removal rate. Thus, bacterial inoculation significantly enhances Cd removal in the presence of biochar in the solution. Moreover, soil incubation experiments showed that bacteria-loaded biochar significantly reduced soil exchangeable Cd in comparison with other treatments by impacting soil microbiome. In particular, bacteria-loaded biochar increased the relative abundance of Bacillus , Lysobacter , and Pontibacter , causing an increase in pH, urease, and arylsulfatase, thereby passivating soil exchangeable Cd and improving soil environmental quality in the natural alkaline Cd-contaminated soil. Overall, this study provides a systematic understanding of the synergistic mechanisms of biochar and bacteria for Cd immobilization in soil and new insights into the selection of functional strain for the efficient remediation of the contaminated environments by bacterial biochar composite.

Abstract:Understanding the interaction mechanism between different heavy metals and soils is a primary and important task for remediation of contaminated soils. In this study, we conducted series experiments to explore the co-contamination mechanism of arsenic (As) and cadmium (Cd) on clayey soils. The results showed that As and Cd exhibited opposite effects on physical and mechanical properties of soils under single contamination, while producing a counteracting effect under co-contamination. Specific adsorption, electrostatic adsorption, and precipitation adsorption co-existed simultaneously in As- and Cd-co-contaminated soils, and precipitates found by XRD is the main cause of the counteraction of As and Cd in co-contaminated soils. The shear strength and permeability coefficient of single As-contaminated soils were decreased by 23.02 kPa and 0.61 × 10 −6 cm/s at a concentration of 5000 mg/kg, respectively, and soil particles were dispersed into small aggregates with more ultramicropores (0.1–5 μm) and cryptopores (< 0.1 μm). However, for single Cd contaminated soils, the shear strengths were increased by 27.93% on average, the maximum permeability coefficient increased to 6.63 × 10 −6 cm/s, and soil aggregations were enlarged with more micropores (5–30 μm). Furthermore, for co-contaminated soils with As and Cd, the shear strength and permeability coefficient were between those of single As- and Cd-contaminated soils at the same concentration, and decreased with an increasing concentration of As. This study provides significant experiment and theory support for remediation and reclamation of heavy metal co-contaminated soils with different charges.

Abstract:Cadmium (Cd) is a biologically non-essential and toxic heavy metal that enters the environment through natural emissions or anthropogenic activities, posing threats to human health. The efficient expression of metal-chelating proteins (MCP) in microorganisms can enhance microbial remediation of Cd. In this study, a heterologous expression system (GEM01) of MCP encoded by the mcp gene in E. coli was constructed, and the adsorption effect and potential mechanism on Cd were explored. The results indicated that Cd 2+ significantly enhanced the abundance of mcp gene in GEM01, thus increasing the Cd 2+ biosorption capacity (8.09 mg/g, 2.32 times higher than the control). The retention of Cd 2+ during the autolysis of GEM01 was 87.87%. Fluorescence spectroscopy and molecular dynamics simulations demonstrated that there was a strong interaction between Cd 2+ and MCP. FT-IR demonstrated that some functional groups (e.g., carboxyl group and methyl group) in MCP were involved in the interaction between MCP and Cd 2+ . Molecular docking further demonstrated that polar and hydrophilic residues (e.g., aspartic acid, glutamic acid, serine, and histidine) on the surface of MCP bound to Cd 2+ via electrostatic attraction. These findings offer new insights into Cd 2+ bioremediation by MCP and genetic resources for microbial remediation of heavy metal pollution.

Biochar loaded with bacteria enhanced Cd/Zn phytoextraction by facilitating plant growth and shaping rhizospheric microbial community

Abstract:Biochar and metal-tolerant bacteria have been widely used in the remediation of heavy metal contaminated soil. However, the synergistic effect of biochar-functional microbes on phytoextraction by hyperaccumulators remains unclear. In this study, the heavy metal-tolerant strain Burkholderia contaminans ZCC was selected and loaded on biochar to produce biochar-resistant bacterial material (BM), and the effects of BM on Cd/Zn phytoextraction by Sedum alfredii Hance and rhizospheric microbial community were explored. The results showed that, BM application significantly enhanced the Cd and Zn accumulation of S. alfredii by 230.13% and 381.27%, respectively. Meanwhile, BM alleviated metal toxicity of S. alfredii by reducing oxidative damage and increasing chlorophyll and antioxidant enzyme activity. High-throughput sequencing revealed that BM significantly improved soil bacterial and fungal diversity, and increased the abundance of genera with plant growth promoting and metal solubilizing functions such as Gemmatimonas, Dyella and Pseudarthrobacter. Co-occurrence network analysis showed that BM significantly increased the complexity of the rhizospheric bacterial and fungal network. Structural equation model analysis revealed that soil chemistry property, enzyme activity and microbial diversity contributed directly or indirectly to Cd and Zn extraction by S. alfredii. Overall, our results suggested that biochar- B. contaminans ZCC was able to enhance the growth and Cd/Zn accumulation by S. alfredii. This study enhanced our understanding on the hyperaccumulator-biochar-functional microbe interactions, and provided a feasible strategy for promoting the phytoextraction efficiency of heavy metal contaminated soils.

Abstract:The present study explored the immobilization of mixed bacteria-loaded biochar on As, Pb, and Cd was explored. Physisorption and sodium alginate encapsulation were used to synthesize two kinds of mixed bacteria-loaded biochars, referred to as BCM and BCB. The observations of Scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffraction, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy distinctly demonstrated the colonization of mixed bacteria on biochar. Besides, the addition of BCM and BCB could increase soil pH with increasing incubation time. The residual fraction of heavy metals and soil dehydrogenase activities were also enhanced after 28 days of incubation. Pb was mainly immobilized by co-precipitation, which meant that Pb could be converted into a consistent crystalline form such as Pb5(PO4)3OH. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analyses of materials identified the formation of Ca2As2O7 and the presence of oxidation from trivalent arsenic to pentavalent arsenic. Cd was adsorbed by forming precipitations (CdCO3) and exchanging ions with the BCM and BCB. Synergistic reactions between anions and cations also contributed to the immobilization of heavy metals, such as the formation of PbAs2O6 and Cd3(AsO4)2. These results confirmed that mixed bacteria-loaded biochar was a feasible technology for the remediation of heavy metals contamination in site soils.

Enhancing the effect of novel cd mobilization bacteria on phytoremediation and microecology of cadmium contaminated soil

Abstract:The efficacy of phytoextraction for remediating heavy-metal contaminated soil depends on the bioavailability of the heavy metals and plant growth. In this study, we employed a synergistic system comprising water-soluble chitosan and the novel Cd mobilization bacteria, Serratia sp . K6 (hereafter K6), to enhance cadmium (Cd) extraction by Lolium perenne L. (ryegrass). The application of chitosan and K6 resulted in an increase in the biomass of ryegrass by 11.81% and Cd accumulation by 73.99% and effective-state Cd by 43.69% and pH decreased by 4.67%, compared to the control group. Microbiome and metabolomics analyses revealed significant alterations in the inter-root microbial ommunity, with rhizobacteria such as Sphingomonas , Nocardioides , and Bacillus likely contributing to enhanced plant growth and Cd accumulation in response to chitosan and K6 addition. Additionally, the contents of various organic acids, amino acids, lipids, and other metabolites exhibited significant changes under different additive treatments, suggesting that ryegrass can regulate its own metabolites to resist Cd stress. This study provides valuable insights into the effects of additives on phytoextraction efficiency and the soil bacterial community, offering a promising approach for phytoremediation of Cd-contaminated soils. Our aim was to uncover the mechanisms by which chitosan affects ryegrass growth and its uptake of HMs in the presence of added exogenous bacterial agents. The findings of our study contribute to a deeper understanding of the interaction mechanisms between exogenous microorganisms and chitosan, thereby improving extraction efficiency in soil-plant systems.

Abstract:Microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) is a promising technique for remediating heavy metal-contaminated soils. However, the effectiveness of MICP in immobilizing Cd in alkaline calcareous soils, especially when applied in agricultural soils, remains unclear. Biochar and magnesium oxide are two environmentally friendly passivating materials, and there are few reports on the combined application of MICP with passivating materials for remediating heavy metal-contaminated soils. Additionally, the number of treatments with MICP cement and the concentration of calcium chloride during the MICP process can both affect the effectiveness of heavy metal immobilization by MICP. Therefore, we conducted MICP and MICP-biochar-magnesium oxide treatments on agricultural soils collected from Baiyin, Gansu Province (pH = 8.62), and analyzed the effects of the number of treatments with cement and the concentration of calcium chloride on the immobilization of Cd by MICP and combined treatments. The results showed that early-stage MICP could immobilize exchangeable cadmium and increase the residual cadmium content, especially with high-concentration calcium chloride MICP treatment. However, in the later stage, soil nitrification and exchange processes led to the dissolution of carbonate-bound cadmium and cadmium activation. The fixing effect of MICP influence whether the MICP-MgO-biochar is superior to the MgO-biochar. Four treatments with cement were more effective than single treatment in MICP-biochar-magnesium oxide treatment, and the MICP-biochar-magnesium oxide treatment with four treatments was the most effective, with passivation rates of 40.7% and 46.6% for exchangeable cadmium and bioavailable cadmium, respectively. However, attention should be paid to the increase in soil salinity. The main mechanism of MICP-magnesium oxide-biochar treatment in immobilizing cadmium was the formation of Cd(OH) 2 , followed by the formation of cadmium carbonate.

Abstract:Remediation of toxic metals contaminated water and soil using engineered biochar is of great concern. This study introduces a novel zirconium-phosphate-modified nanomagnetic biochar (ZMBC) synthesized from traditional Chinese herbal residues as a potential adsorbent for remediation of Cd2+ and Pb2+ contaminated water and soil. The impact of co-existing ions, ionic strength, metal concentrations, pH, and contact time on the adsorption/immobilization efficiency/mechanisms of ZMBC for Cd2+ and Pb2+ in water and soil were investigated together with the induced changes in soil bacterial community for the first time. The governing factors and potential mechanisms for the interaction between metals and ZMBC have been investigated using biogeochemical, microscopic, and spectroscopic techniques. The adsorption capacity of ZMBC for Pb2+ (357.1 mg g−1) and Cd2+ (136.2 mg g−1) was significantly higher than that of pristine biochar (BC) and nanomagnetic biochar (MBC) (<5 mg g−1). The adsorption behavior for Pb2+ and Cd2+ followed the pseudo-second-order, intra-particle diffusion and Langmuir model, and was minimally affected by ionic strength. Co-existence of Ca2+, Cu2+ and Zn2+ ions at lower concentrations (<10 mg L–1) promoted the adsorption of Pb2+ but inhibited it at higher concentrations (50–200 mg L–1). Conversely, the co-existence of those ions at 10–200 mg L–1, particularly Cu2+ and Zn2+ significantly inhibited Cd2+ adsorption. Adsorption of Pb2+ and Cd2+ on ZMBC was dominated by functional group complexation, co-precipitation, metal-π electronic coordination, and ion exchange. Addition of ZMBC to the contaminated soil altered the mobile fraction of Cd2+ and Pb2+ to the residual fractions and thus significantly reduced the DTPA-extractable Pb2+ by 51.3% and Cd2+ by 56.1%, and also reduced the Cd and Pb in the wheat roots (by 64.0% and 36.1%, respectively) and shoots (by 73.5% and 62.2%, respectively), as compared to the untreated soil. The analysis of the soil 16S rDNA gene showed that the addition of ZMBC increased soil bacteria suitable for bioremediation of Pb2+ and Cd2+ contaminated soil. Those findings conclude that ZMBC can be used as a promising amendment for remediation of water and soils co-polluted with Cd and Pb.

Abstract:A novel intercalated nanocomposite of mercapto-modified cellulose/bentonite (LCS-BE-SH) was synthesized by high-speed shearing method in one step at room temperature, and was applied to remove Cd from solution and remediate Cd-contaminated soil. Results revealed that cellulose long-chain molecules have intercalated into bentonite nanolayers and interlayer spacing was increased to 1.411 nm, and grafting -SH groups improved adsorption selectivity, which enabled LCS-BE-SH to have distinct capability of Cd adsorption (qmax =147.21 mg/ g). Kinetic and thermodynamics showed that Cd adsorption onto LCS-BE-SH was well fitted by pseudo-secondorder and Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Characterizations of the adsorbents revealed that synergistic effect of complexation (e.g., CdS, CdO) and precipitation (e.g., Cd(OH)2, CdCO3) mechanism played a major role in Cd removal. In soil remediation, application of LCS-BE-SH was most effective (67.31 %) in Cd immobilization compared to the control (8.85 %), which reduced exchangeable Cd from 37.03 % to 11.44 %. Meanwhile, soil pH, soil organic matter, available phosphorus, and enzyme activities (catalase, urease, and dehydrogenase) were improved LCS-BE-SH treatment. The main immobilization mechanism in soil included complexation (e.g., CdS, CdO) and precipitation (e.g., Cd(OH)2, Cd-Fe-hydroxide). Overall, this work applied a promising approach for Cd removal in aqueous and Cd remediation in soil by using an effective eco-friendly LCS-BE-SH nanocomposites.

Abstract:A novel calcium-based magnetic biochar (Ca-MBC), made by pyrolyzing the mixture of rice straw, iron oxide (Fe3O4) and calcium carbonate (CaCO3), was developed in this study for remediation of co-pollution of arsenic and cadmium. Characteristics of the material showed that Fe3O4 and CaCO3 were adhered on the surface of biochar. The experiments on the effects of pH, adsorption kinetics and isotherm revealed that the Ca-MBC had a great ability to adsorb arsenic and cadmium within 0.5 h for cadmium and 12 h for arsenic with a maximum adsorption capacity of 6.34 and 10.07 mg g(-1), respectively, and that the adsorption of both metals was pH-dependent from 2 to 12 with an optimal pH of pH 5. The mechanism of co-adsorption of Cd(II) and As(III) included both competitive and synergistic effects. The presence of As(III) enhanced Cd(II) adsorption by 3-16% while Cd(II) addition suppressed As(III) adsorption by 15-33%. The synergistic effects on As(III) and Cd(II) adsorption had resulted from the electrostatic interaction and the formation of type B ternary surface complexes. These new insights provide valuable information for the application of Ca-MBC as a potential adsorbent in treatment of water contaminated with As(III) and Cd(II). (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:The effect and mechanism of biochar as a support on immobilization of different heavy metals (HMs) by iron oxides (Fe x O y ) were still poorly understood. Herein, biochar-supported zero-valent iron (ZVI/BC) was fabricated via the simple one-step thermal reduction approach and applied to a soil multi-contaminated with cadmium (Cd), zinc (Zn), and lead (Pb) for 60-d. Results showed that individual pyrogenic Fe x O y effectively immobilized Cd but facilitated the release of Pb and Zn in soils. Biochar as a support compromised the immobilization of Cd by Fe x O y , possibly ascribing to cationic competition effect. ZVI/BC can synergistically immobilize Zn and Pb with the immobilization effectiveness of 33.7 % and 11.9 %, respectively owing to the dispersion effect of BC on ZVI. ZVI/BC addition increased soil pH, but soil pH increase can be not the key factor for the immobilization of HMs in soils. Moreover, biochar increased the diversity of soil bacteria community, but pyrogenic Fe x O y significantly lowered it. Further, ZVI/BC supplementation significantly stimulated the relative abundances of Fe(III)-reducing bacteria (e.g., Geobacter and Acinetobacter ) and sulfate-reducing bacteria (e.g., Desulfosporosinus and Desulfurispora ) in soils, boosting the microbial reduction of Fe(III) minerals and increasing the HCl-extractable Fe(II) concentration. The adsorption/co-precipitation of secondary Fe minerals and formation of metal sulfide precipitates could play an important role in immobilization of HMs in soils. Overall, the present study highlighted the coupling of biotic and abiotic processes for stabilization remediation of HMs multi-contaminated soils by ZVI/BC.

Abstract:Mercapto-palygorskite (MP) is a novel immobilization material for cadmium (Cd) pollution, but the immobilization mechanism on alkaline Cd contaminated soil is not completely clear. In this paper, field experiment was carried out to study the effect of MP on the transfer of Cd in aggregates at different depth, the contribution of soil aggregates to the reduction of Cd in bulk soil and the immobilization mechanism of MP. The results showed that MP had no significant influence on the total Cd content, soil aggregates distribution, pH value, CEC value and enzyme activities no matter at any depth. At the depth of 0–20 cm, MP significantly reduced the DTPA-Cd in bulk soil by 60.7%, and increased the GWD and R0.25 value. Similarly, the content of DTPA-Cd in the soil aggregates was deceased by 40.2–63.6%, the OM, DOC, available Fe, Mn and S in soil aggregates were significantly increased by 15.0–19.1%, 19.2–41.7%, 24.7–41.2% and 12.5–35.1% respectively. The Cd fraction of aggregates, especially exchangeable Cd (EXE-Cd) and bound to Fe/Mn oxide Cd (OX-Cd), was reduced by 5.4–28.1% and increased by 22.3–50.4%. In addition, MP had different effects on the GSF value of soil aggregates, but there was a downward trend for AFX value at 0–20 cm soil depth. MP almost had no significant influence on the above indexes at the depth of 20–40 cm and 40–60 cm, but except the Cd fraction, the GSF and AFX value in individual aggregates. Small aggregates ( 1 mm) contributed 59.1% and 22% to the reduction of Cd in bulk soil. Partial Least Structural Equation Model (PL-SEM) revealed that S promoted the production of available Fe, Mn, OM and DOC, while the content of DOC inhibited the formation of EXE-Cd and the available Fe and Mn boosted the production of OX-Cd.
