Abstract:Per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are chemically and thermally stable due to the presence of carbon-fluorine (C-F) bond in their molecular structures, hence have been previously formulated as firefighting in-gredients. During the firefighting process, however, owing to the high temperature, PFAS can be potentially degraded, particularly for PFAS precursors that contain non-C-F bonds, which is studied herein by exposing PFAS-contaminated soil in a muffle furnace oven. Different temperatures and time intervals are applied to the real soil sample to mimic the firing process and to evaluate the degradation and conversion of PFAS. This thermal treatment can not only degrade precursors (e.g. 6:2 fluorotelomer sulphonate), but also degrade perfluoroalkyl carboxylates (PFCA, e.g. perfluorooctanoic acid PFOA) and perfluoroalkyl sulfonates (PFSA, e.g. perfluorooctane sulfonate PFOS). The concentration dependence of the PFAS on temperature and time is fitted using a 2D Gaussian surface to simulate the complex thermal kinetic, and to compare with the traditional approach such as thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) (1D dependence on temperature only). The 2D simulation can directly visu-alise the thermal kinetic of individual or sum PFAS in the complex temperature-time plane, which depends on the sample background and particularly on the coexist PFAS precursors. Overall, this study provides a simple approach to monitor and optimise the thermal treatment of the PFAS-contaminated soil.
Raman Imaging for the Identification of Teflon Microplastics and Nanoplastics Released from Non-Stick Cookware.

Abstract:The characterisation of microplastics is still difficult, and the challenge is even greater for nanoplastics. A possible source of these particles is the scratched surface of a non-stick cooking pot that is mainly coated with Teflon. Herein we employ Raman imaging to scan the surfaces of different non-stick pots and collect spectra as spectrum matrices, akin to a hyperspectral imaging process. We adjust and optimise different algorithms and create a new hybrid algorithm to extract the extremely weak signal of Teflon microplastics and particularly nanoplastics. We use multiple characteristic peaks of Teflon to create several images, and merge them to one, using a logic-based algorithm (i), in order to cross-check them and to increase the signal-noise ratio. To differentiate the varied peak heights towards image merging, an algebra-based algorithm (ii) is developed to process different images with weighting factors. To map the images via the whole set of the spectrum (not just from the individual characteristic peaks), a principal component analysis (PCA)-based algorithm (iii) is employed to orthogonally decode the spectrum matrix to the PCA spectrum and PCA intensity image. To effectively extract the Teflon spectrum information, a new hybrid algorithm is developed to justify the PCA spectra and merge the PCA intensity images with the algebra-based algorithm (PCA/algebra-based algorithm) (iv). Based on these developments and with the help of SEM, we estimate that thousands to millions of Teflon microplastics and nanoplastics might be released during a mimic cooking process. Overall, it is recommended that Raman imaging, along with the signal recognition algorithms, be combined with SEM to characterise and quantify microplastics and nanoplastics.

Abstract:Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) analysis has become crucial due to their presence in the environment, their persistence and potential health risks. These compounds are commonly used in food contact materials (FCM) as a coating to provide water and grease-repellent properties. One of the pathways for PFAS to enter the human body is either through direct consumption of contaminated food or indirectly through migration from FCM into food. The purpose of this study was to investigate where the initial contamination of paper FCM occurs. We analysed paper material consisting of fresh fibre and secondary materials, intended to produce food packaging for the presence of PFAS. The samples were extracted and analysed for 23 different PFAS substances using the targeted approach with LC tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). This analytical technique detects specific, easily ionisable PFAS with high sensitivity. However, one drawback of this approach is that it allows the identification of less than 1% of the PFAS known today. For this reason, we used combustion ion chromatography (CIC) to determine the content of extractable organic fluorine compounds (EOF) and compare it to the total fluorine content. The targeted analysis using LC-MS/MS measured an average sum concentration of PFAS of 0.17 ng g −1 sample. Our research shows that the primary PFAS contamination happens during the recycling process since all of the samples in which the targeted PFAS were measured belonged to the secondary material. The most frequently detected analytes were PFOA and PFOS, detected in 90% and 62% of the samples, respectively, followed by PFBS (in 29% of the samples). CIC showed that measured PFAS via LC-MS/MS amount to an average of 2.7 × 10 −4 % of total fluorine content, whereas the EOF was under the LOD in all of the measured samples. This result highlights the complexity of the accurate determination of PFAS compounds, displaying what kind of information the chosen methods provide.

Method development and evaluation for the determination of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances in multiple food matrices

Abstract:A method for the determination of 21 perfluorinated and 10 polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) was developed for application in different food matrices. Acetonitrile was used as the extraction solvent with solid phase extraction weak anion-exchange (SPE-WAX) clean up, with LC-MS/MS analysis using both surrogate and performance standards to correct for losses during sample preparation and matrix effects. The method has been evaluated in four different matrices (fish, pizza, chicken nuggets and spinach). Originally, the focus was to develop a method for foods commonly thought to be a source of PFASs (e.g. fish). It was expanded to include foods where PFAS exposure would be possible through their presence in grease-proof food packaging (e.g. pizza, chicken nuggets). Vegetables (lettuce) and fruit (tomato) have recently been considered as part of proficiency testing programmes, so the inclusion of some testing in a vegetable matrix (i.e. spinach) was also added to the testing. Limits of quantification ranged from 0.018 ng g-1 (L-PFDS) to 5.28 ng g-1 (FHEA), although method quantification limits for PFBA (12.4 ng g-1), 6:2 PAP (8.96 ng g-1) and 8:2 PAP (3.49 ng g-1) were elevated above instrumental limits owing to their consistent detection in reagent blank samples. PFAS analyses were strongly impacted by matrix, therefore the use of isotopically labelled internal standards was critical to the development of accurate results. The accuracy of the method using numerous proficiency testing schemes or interlaboratory comparison studies has shown the developed method to be successful with z-scores for all concerned analytes in all test matrices remaining within ±2.0, with the exception of PFBA in wheat flour which was -2.4.

Abstract:The analysis method for the content of residues of perfluorooctane sulfonates (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) in the fluorine polymer products was studied. The fluorine polymer sample was pre-treated by frozen crush and ultrasound extraction, and the content of PFOA and PFOS was tested by HPLC-MS. The mass concentration of PFOA and PFOS was 0.1～50 μg/mL, with good linear relationship, standard recovery rate was 80%～115%, and relative standard deviation was under 10%.

Abstract:AbstractTwo perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) and 17 different primary aromatic amines (PAAs) were analyzed by liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS) in migrants from 35 cookware samples marketed in Turkey. Among PFCs, only PFOA was identified in 6 samples. Only two components among PAAs, namely aniline (ANL) and 4,4′-methylenedianiline (4,4′-MDA), were detected in analyzed samples. Although aniline was detected in all samples, 4,4′-MDA was detected in only 4 samples. The effects of simulant volume, temperature, and repeated use on the release of these migrants from non-stick cookware were investigated. Three simulant volumes (200, 500, and 1000 mL) were used in migration tests. PFCs and PAAs were identified in simulants at 200 and 500 mL. The increase in the amount of simulant caused a decrease in the concentration of these migrants. The lowest migration values were observed in the samples at consecutive usage cycles. PFCs and PAAs exhibited the highest migration ability with increasing temperature.

Abstract:Per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) can be added to food contact materials (FCM) to increase their water and/or grease repellent properties. Some well-known PFAS are perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (PFCA), perfluoroalkyl sulfonic acids (PFSA), and polyfluorinated telomer alcohols (FTOH). Due to the strength of the carbon-fluorine bond, PFAS are chemically very stable and highly resistant to biological degradation, posing a risk to human health and the environment. To examine the presence of PFAS in paper-based FCM, various samples were collected, including popcorn bags, muffin cups, and pizza boxes with high total organic fluorine (TOF) content from the Danish and Spanish markets. The FCM composition was characterised by FTIR. Quantification of some well-known PFAS such as PFCA, PFSA, and FTOH was performed in food simulants using LC-MS/MS, and in addition a non-targeted screening approach was performed by LC-Orbitrap-HRMS. Among analysed samples, the highest concentrations of PFAS were found in a muffin cup made of cellulose (PFCA ∼ 1.41 μg kg −1 food, FTOH ∼ 11.5 μg kg −1 food), and the results were used to estimate dietary exposures to PFAS migrated from this FCM. Compared to measured TOF value in this sample, the fluorine from all quantified PFAS accounted for only 0.6%. Thus, a more powerful analytical approach was used to further investigate PFAS occurrence in this sample. Using non-targeted screening, an additional twenty compounds were identified, among them five with confidence level 1 and ten with confidence level 2. Many of them were either fluorotelomer carboxylic acids or sulfonic acids or ether-containing compounds.

Abstract:Here, we report a comparative study of different sum parameter analysis methods for the extraction of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from manufactured consumer products, which can be measured by combustion ion chromatography (CIC). Therefore, a hydrolysis-based extraction method was further developed, which accounts for the addition of hydrolyzable covalently bound polyfluoroalkylated side-chain polymers (SFPs) to the extractable organic fluorine portion of the mass balance proposed as "hydrolyzable organically bound fluorine" (HOF). To test this hypothesis, the method was applied to 39 different consumer products containing fluoropolymers or monomeric PFAS taken from four different categories: outdoor textiles, paper packaging, carpeting, and permanent baking sheets. We also evaluated the method's efficiency by extracting four synthesized fluorotelomer polyacrylate reference compounds. The total fluorine (TF) and extractable organically bound fluorine (EOF) values were measured through CIC using established protocols. The TF values ranged from sub-ppb to %-levels, depending on the compound class. Abstract:Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), in the polymeric form, have been used extensively in functional textiles, including firefighter's turnout gear (e.g., jackets and pants), where PFAS are applied to confer oil and water resistance. However, growing concerns over the persistence, potential toxicity, and environmental impact of PFAS have prompted a thorough assessment of potential exposure pathways. Here, we report the emission of PFAS from three firefighter turnout gear jackets at 38 °C. Volatile emissions from the three layers (outer layer, moisture barrier, and thermal liner) were collected onto sorbent tubes via dynamic headspace sampling using a micro-scale chamber device kept at 38 °C for one hour. The emission was characterized using thermal desorption (TD) coupled to two-dimensional gas chromatography - time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC×GC-TOF MS). The enhanced separation capacity of GC×GC was essential due to the high number of compounds present in each sample, especially for the fabrics from used turnout gear jackets. Based on the filtering expressions, including two-dimensional retention time (1tr and 2tr) and PFAS diagnostic fragment ions (m/z 69, 95, and 131), fluorotelomer alcohols (FTOHs) and fluorotelomer acrylates were identified using standards and spectral matching with the NIST database. After conducting a non-targeted tile-based workflow, jackets (both used and unused) and layers were compared, resulting in the identification of the top 15 discriminating features from over 400 chromatographic peaks. Finally, preliminary FTOH emission experiments showed some usage and layers trends that are aligned with those reported using solvent extraction. Highest levels of FTOHs were found in the moisture barrier, followed by the outer layer and the thermal liner. Older jackets emitted higher levels of 8:2 FTOH and 10:2 FTOH than a newer jacket. In contrast, a newer jacket used for one year had emissions containing higher levels of 6:2 FTOH. Investigating routes of exposure and identifying new PFAS targets are critical steps in evaluating the environmental and health impacts of these persistent chemicals.

Abstract:A suite of analytical techniques was used to obtain a comprehensive picture of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in selected Canadian food packaging used for fast foods (n = 42). Particle-induced gamma ray emission spectroscopy revealed that 55% of the samples contained <3580, 19% contained 3580–10 800, and 26% > 10 800 μg F/m2. The highest total F (1 010 000–1 300 000 μg F/m2) was measured in molded “compostable” bowls. Targeted analysis of 8 samples with high total F revealed 4–15 individual PFAS in each sample, with 6:2 fluorotelomer methacrylate (FTMAc) and 6:2 fluorotelomer alcohol (FTOH) typically dominating. Up to 34% of the total fluorine was released from samples after hydrolysis, indicating the presence of unknown precursors. Nontargeted analysis detected 22 PFAS from 6 different groups, including degradation products of FTOH. Results indicate the use of side-chain fluorinated polymers and suggest that these products can release short-chain compounds that ultimately can be transformed to compounds of toxicological concern. Analysis after 2 years of storage showed overall decreases in PFAS consistent with the loss of volatile compounds such as 6:2 FTMAc and FTOH. The use of PFAS in food packaging such as “compostable” bowls represents a regrettable substitution of single-use plastic food packaging.

Abstract:This study sought to develop a non-targeted workflow using high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) to investigate previously unknown PFAS in consumer food packaging samples. Samples composed of various materials for different food types were subjected to methanolic extraction, controlled migration with food simulants and total oxidizable precursor (TOP) assay. The developed HRMS workflow utilized many signatures unique to PFAS compounds: negative mass defect, diagnostic breakdown structures, as well as retention time prediction. Potential PFAS features were identified in all packaging studied, regardless of food and material types. Five tentatively identified compounds were confirmed with analytical standards: 6:2 fluorotelomer phosphate diester (6:2 diPAP) and one of its intermediate breakdown products 2H-perfluoro-2-octenoic acid (6:2 FTUCA), perfluoropentadecanoic acid (PFPeDA), perfluorohexadecanoic acid (PFHxDA) and perfluorooctadecanoic acid (PFOcDA). Longer perfluorocarboxylic acids including C17 and C19 to C24 were also found present within a foil sample. Concentrations of 6:2 FTUCA ranged from 0.78 to 127 ng g-1 in methanolic extracts and up to 6 ng g-1 in food simulant after 240 h migration test. These results demonstrate the prevalence of both emerging and legacy PFAS in food packaging samples and highlight the usefulness of non-targeted tools to identify PFAS not included in targeted methods.

Abstract:The scientific foundation for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) measurements in water, soils, sediments, biosolids, biota, and outdoor air has rapidly expanded; however, there are limited efforts devoted to developing analytical methods to measure vapor-phase PFAS in indoor air. A gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) method coupled with thermal desorption (TD) sorbent tube analysis was developed to quantify trace levels of fluorotelomer alcohols (FTOHs) emitted from consumer products in the indoor environment. Method evaluation included determination of instrument detection limits (IDLs), quality assurance checks of target standards purchased from different vendors, sample loss during storage, and TD sorbent breakthrough with tubes coupled in-series. The IDLs for TD-GC-MS/MS analyses ranged from 0.07 – 0.09 ng/tube. No significant loss of FTOHs was observed during stability tests over 28 days with relative standard deviations (RSDs) of spiked TD tubes ranging from 3.1 – 7.7% and the RSDs of polypropylene copolymer vial storage of standard solutions ranging from 4.3 – 8.4%. TD tube breakthrough was minimal with recovered FTOHs in the second tubes <1% of the spiked concentrations in the first tubes with carrier gas volume up to 20 L. The method has been applied to determine FTOH emissions from three consumer products in micro-scale chambers. A liquid stone cleaner/sealer product contained the highest levels of 6:2, 8:2, and 10:2 FTOHs, while the mattress pad products contained lower levels of 8:2 and 10:2 FTOHs. The emission parameters, including the initial emission factors and first order decay rate constants, were obtained based on the experimental data. The developed methods are sensitive and specific for analysis of all four target FTOHs (4:2, 6:2, 8:2, 10:2 FTOHs) with chamber testing. The methods can be extended to indoor air sampling and could be applicable to ambient air sampling.

Abstract:Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), as coating materials, possess oil-resistant and waterproof properties. However, their persistency and toxicity have caused concerns. This study developed a method for determining five types of 20 PFASs with ultra-performance liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry, and measured seven categories of 32 commercial samples of oil-resistant food packaging in Taiwan. The assay was validated according to the specification of Taiwan Food and Drug Administration (TFDA). Samples of 100 cm2 were cut into pieces and were ultra-sonicated in 20-mL methanol at 50 °C for 45 minutes. The extracts were concentrated to 1 mL for instrumental analysis. Most matrix effect factors and extraction efficiencies of the analytes were 50%-80% and 52%-99%, respectively. Most limits of detection and limits of quantification were between 0.07-11.3 ng/dm2 and 0.17-18.3 ng/dm2, respectively. Most recoveries ranged from 70% to 117% at three tested levels, and the precisions (%RSD) were lower than 19%. Microwave popcorn paper contained more types and higher levels of PFASs than other packaging, with perfluoroalkyl acids at 8.3-1960 ng/dm2 and fluorotelomer alcohols (FTOHs) at 9.7-7188 ng/dm2. High concentrations of FTOHs were also observed in one oil-proof paper bag at 454-2595 ng/dm2 and in one French fries paper bag at 22.4-167 ng/dm2.

Abstract:Leaching of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) during the post-consumer disposal of food contact materials (FCMs) poses a potential environmental threat but has seldom been evaluated. This study characterized the leaching behavior of PFAS and unidentified precursors from six common FCMs and assessed the impact of environmental conditions on PFAS release during disposal. The total concentration of 21 PFAS ranged from 3.2 to 377 ng/g in FCMs, with PFAS leachability into water varying between 1.1–42.8 %. Increasing temperature promoted PFAS leaching, with leached nine primary PFAS (∑ 9 PFAS) reaching 46.3, 70.4, and 102 ng/L at 35, 45, and 55 °C, respectively. Thermodynamic analysis (∆G>0, ∆H>0, and ∆S<0) indicated hydrophobic interactions control PFAS leaching. The presence of dissolved organic matter in synthetic leachate increased the leached ∑ 9 PFAS from 47.1 to 103 ng/L but decreased PFBS, PFOS, and 6:2 FTS leaching. The total release of seven perfluorocarboxylic acids (∑ 7 PFCAs) from takeaway food packaging waste was estimated to be 0.3–8.2 kg/y to landfill leachate and 0.6–15.4 kg/y to incineration plant leachate, contributing 0.2–4.8 % and 0.1–3.2 % of total ∑ 7 PFCAs in each leachate type. While the study presents a refined methodology for estimating PFAS release during disposal, future research is needed on the indirect contribution from precursors.

Abstract:Fluoropolymer manufacturing is a major historical source of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) on a global scale, but little is known about the emissions, transport, and fate of emerging per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs). Here, we performed a comprehensive spatial trend and interyear comparison of surface water and sediment samples from the Xiaoqing River, which receives water discharge from one of the major fluoropolymer manufacturing facilities in China. A suspect screening identified 42 chemical formulas, including the tetramer acid of hexafluoropropylene oxide (HFPO-TeA) and numerous tentatively detected isomers of C9-C14 per- or polyfluoroalkyl ether carboxylic acids (PFECAs). As revealed by the spatial trends and peak area-based sediment-water distribution coefficients, emerging PFASs with 3-9 perfluorinated carbons were transported unimpededly with the bulk water flow having no measurable degradation. Emerging PFASs with >9 perfluorinated carbons displayed more rapidly decreasing spatial trends than shorter-chain homologues in surface water due to increasing sedimentation rates. The presence of HFPO oligomers, monoether PFECAs, monohydrogen-substituted perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (PFCAs) and monochlorine-substituted PFCAs could partly be explained by the active use of polymerization aids or the impurities therein. However, further research is encouraged to better characterize the emissions of low-molecular-weight PFASs from fluoropolymers throughout their life-cycle.

Abstract:Papers and textiles that are treated with per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are sources of human and environmental exposure. Data for individual PFASs, such as perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoate (PFOA), are not placed into the context of total fluorine for papers and textiles. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) were used to quantify volatile and ionic PFASs, respectively, and the total oxidizable precursor (TOP) assay was used to quantify precursors that form perfluoroalkyl carboxylates. Molar sums of PFASs obtained by GC-MS, LC-MS/MS, and precursors were compared to total fluorine (nmol F/cm2) determined by particle-induced gamma ray emission (PIGE) spectroscopy, measured before and after extraction. Volatile and ionic PFASs and unknown precursors accounted for 0-2.2%, 0-0.41%, and 0.021-14%, respectively, of the total nmol F/cm2 determined by PIGE. After extraction, papers and textiles retained 64 ± 28% to 110 ± 30% of the original nmol F/cm2 as determined by PIGE, indicating that the majority of fluorine remains associated with the papers and textiles. The sum of PFASs in the volatile, ionic, and precursor fraction, and total fluorine after extraction indicate that mass balance was achieved (within analytical error) of the initial total fluorine measured by PIGE.

Abstract:The thermal decomposition products and mechanisms of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are poorly understood despite the use of thermal treatment to remediate PFAS-contaminated media. To identify the thermal decomposition products and mechanisms of perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs), gaseous perfluoropropionic acid (PFPrA) and perfluorobutyric acid (PFBA) were decomposed in nitrogen and oxygen at temperatures from 200 to 780 °C. In nitrogen (i.e., pyrolysis), the primary products of PFPrA were CF2═CF2, CF3CF2H, and CF3COF. CF3CF═CF2 was the dominant product of PFBA. These products are produced by HF elimination (detected as low as 200 °C). CF4 and C2F6 were observed from both PFCAs, suggesting formation of perfluorocarbon radical intermediates. Pyrolysis products were highly thermally stable, resulting in poor defluorination. In oxygen (i.e., combustion), the primary product of both PFPrA and PFBA below 400 °C was COF2, but the primary product was SiF4 above 600 °C due to reactions with the quartz reactor. Oxygen facilitated thermal defluorination by reacting with PFCAs and with pyrolysis products (i.e., fluoroolefins and fluorocarbon radicals). Platinum improved combustion of PFCAs to COF2 at temperatures as low as 200 °C, while quartz promoted the combustion of PFCAs into SiF4 at higher temperatures (>600 °C), highlighting the importance of surface reactions that are not typically incorporated into computational approaches.
