Abstract:The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is a key process in water electrolysis to produce hydrogen, but the development of highly active, stable and cost-effective monolith HER electrocatalysts by simple methods remains a great challenge. Here we report a compelling and powerful strategy to prepare a Ni enriched three-dimensional nanoporous NiAl catalyst which can be directly used as a highly active and long-lived HER electrode in acids. The electrode exhibits low onset overpotential of only -33 mV. Overpotentials of merely -157 mV and -226 mV are needed to reach current densites of -100 and -200 mA cm(-2), respectively, superior to recently reported state-of-art Ni-based monolith HER catalysts. The high activity is likely due to in situ obtained nanoporous structure with high surface area and nanosized Ni. Under a medium overpotential of - 335 mV, the electrode can sustain - 350 mA cm(-2) up to 60 h, showing good long-term stability at high current density. The favorable combination of the high activity, stability, facile preparation and low-cost makes the Ni enriched nanoporous NiAl a promising electrocatalyst for high-speed hydrogen production.
Ni/Ni12P5 Heterostructure Decorated on Multi‐channel Carbonized Wood Frameworks for Efficient Hydrogen Evolution

Abstract:For exploiting high-efficiency and stable non-noble metal hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts, rationally design and optimizing the electrode structures are extremely essential. Herein, inspired by the abundant pores and highly ordered multi-channel structures of natural wood, a typical electrode with Ni/Ni12P5 heterostructure embedded in the multi-channel carbonized wood frameworks (Ni/Ni12P5/CW) was designed and fabricated. The open micro-channel structure and electrical conductivity of carbonized wood (CW) facilitates electron transfer, electrolyte penetration, and gas diffusion. Meanwhile, formation of the Ni/Ni12P5 heterostructure is beneficial to improve the activity of pristine nickel phosphide. As expected, the Ni/Ni12P5/CW electrode exhibited excellent HER catalytic activity, which merely needed overpotentials of 86, 138 and 173 mV to drive 10, 50 and 100 mA cm(-2) in alkaline media, respectively. In addition, it showed superior durability with no significant degradation for more than 60 h of continuous operation at different current densities. This work will enlighten the development and utilization of wood-based materials for application in electrocatalysis.
Wood‐Derived Freestanding Carbon‐based Electrode with Hierarchical Structure for Industrial‐Level Hydrogen Production

Abstract:The sustainable and scalable fabrication of low‐cost, efficient and durable electrocatalysts that operate well at industrial‐level current density is urgently needed for large‐scale implementation of the water splitting to produce hydrogen. In this work, an integrated carbon electrode is constructed by encapsulating Ni nanoparticles within N‐doped carbonized wood framework (Ni@NCW). Such integrated electrode with hierarchically porous structure facilitates mass transfer process for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Ni@NCW electrode can be employed directly as a robust electrocatalyst for HER, which affords the industrial‐level current density of 1000 mA cm−2 at low overpotential of 401 mV. The freestanding binder‐free electrode exhibits extraordinary stability for 100 h. An anion exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE) electrolyzer assembled with such freestanding carbon electrode requires only a lower cell voltage of 2.43 V to achieve ampere‐level current of 4.0 A for hydrogen production without significant performance degradation. These advantages reveal the great potential of this strategy in designing cost‐effective freestanding electrode with monometallic, bimetallic or trimetallic species based on abundant natural wood resources for water splitting. Abstract:Porous biomass electrodes have emerged as a critical material for electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, most approaches for synthesizing porous electrodes from biomass require high energy consumption, which is resulted from the smash of biomass and the undergoing of serial assembly. Herein, a self-supported wood-derived "breathable" membrane is utilized directly as electrodes for high-efficient HER via an assembly of Fe-doped NiP alloys. The well-designed hierarchical porous structures in natural wood membrane (NWM) are unusually beneficial for electrolytes accessibility and hydrogen gas removal. The obtained wood-derived membrane exhibits a high electrocatalytic activity and good cycling durability in acidic and alkaline electrolytes. Remarkably, the Fe0.074NiP alloys/NWM electrode affords a large current density of 100 mA cm–2 at extremely low overpotentials of 168 mV in acidic electrolyte and 174 mV in alkaline electrolyte. Density functional theory calculations unveil that the Fe atom doped in NiP alloys can create much more charge accumulation around Fe and Ni active sites, which helps decrease the ΔGH* and ΔGH2O and significantly promote the HER process. This new insight will promote further explorations of economic, high-efficient, and biodegradable wood-derived electrocatalysts for HER.

Abstract:Innovative breakthroughs regarding self-supported open and porous electrodes that can promote gas-liquid transmission and regulate the water dissociation kinetics are critical for sustainable hydrogen economy. Herein, a free-standing porous electrode with Pd-NiS nanoparticles assembled in a multichannel carbonized wood framework (Pd-NiS/CW) was ingeniously constructed. Specifically, carbonized wood (CW) with a mass of open microchannels and high electrical conductivity can significantly facilitate electrolyte permeation ("inhalation"), hydrogen evolution ("exhalation"), and electron transfer. As expected, the fabricated "breathable" wooden electrode exhibits remarkable hydrogen evolution activity in 1.0 M KOH, only requiring a low overpotential of 80 mV to sustain a current density of 10 mA cm-2, and can maintain this current density for 100 h. Further, the spectroscopic characterization and density functional theory (DFT) calculations manifest that the electron interaction between Pd and NiS is beneficial to reduce the water dissociation energy barriers, optimize the adsorption/desorption of H, and ultimately accelerate the catalytic activity. The work reported here will provide a potential approach for the design of electrocatalysts combined with natural multichannel wood to achieve the goal of high electrocatalytic activity and superior durability for hydrogen production.

Abstract:One of the bottleneck problems in the application of hydrolysis hydrogen production technology is the stability and continuity of activity of electrode at large current density. Herein, an ingenious hierarchical self-supporting wood-based carbon electrocatalyst are developed to improve the efficiency and stability of hydrogen evolution at large current density. The wood-carbon framework with open microchannels achieves efficient mass transfer and overall stability of the electrode under long-term high current density. Significantly, metal-organic framework derived cobalt–nickel Metal bridges (Co, Ni–N–C) facilitate the tight interfacial bonding of wood and nickel–cobalt binary alloy nanoparticles, and achieves the coordination of conductivity, stability and porosity in the wood framework and the migration of the d-band center, thereby enhancing the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance and superior durability. This work provides an efficient method for industrial scale application of wood based self-supported hydrogen evolution electrocatalyst electrode.

Abstract:Controllable fabrication of high-performance and inexpensive heterogeneous catalysts is crucial for the electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and renewable energy. Wood-derived electrodes provide new opportunities. Herein, N-doped carbon nanotubes (CNTs) encapsulating metal particles are in situ generated on graphitized wood (GW)-derived porous carbon frameworks and molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanoflakes are dispersively anchored on CNTs, resulting in hierarchical structures as a hybrid electrode (M/CNT@MoS2@GW, M = Fe, Co, and Ni). The wood matrix hybrid electrodes with abundant microchannels and hierarchical pores could supply electrolytes for continuous reaction and boost gas diffusion. Consequently, the hybrid electrocatalyst Fe/Fe3C/CNT@MoS2@GW exhibits superior HER activity with an overpotential as low as 66.79 mV at 10 mA cm–2 in an alkaline solution. The activity of the hybrid structure is reduced only by 10.18% at 20 mA cm–2 after 48 h electrolysis, with nearly no decay after 5000 cyclic voltammetry (CV) cycles, suggesting good stability and durability. Density functional theory calculations illustrate that a thermodynamically favorable hydrogen adsorption free energy (ΔG H* ≈ 0.07 eV) promotes the catalytic reactions. The results hold great potential in the exploration of wood-derived catalysts for high-performance HER.

However, the damage to original structure and the introduction of impurities are highly possible in the process. The cost of time and material is also increased. In this work, we propose that a wood-derived carbon framework is used as a working electrode supporting CVD-grown ReS2 nanosheets in electrocatalytic HER. The optimal HER electrode with unique pore-through structure exhibits effective electrochemical surface area of 521 cmECSA2 and outstanding stability over 11 h. Such a carbon framework derived from natural wood is earth-abundant, ecofriendly and renewable, which can be potentially applied in the green energy industry.

Simultaneous Interfacial Chemistry and Inner Helmholtz Plane Regulation for Superior Alkaline Hydrogen Evolution

Abstract:Developing highly efficient and durable alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts composed of earth-abundant materials is crucial for large-scale electrochemical hydrogen production. Herein, interfacial chemistry engineering is employed to decouple the restriction of both water discharge and hydrogen adsorption free energy. And low valence state Niδ+ (δ < 1) is proposed as an efficient water-dissociation promoter based on our dual-descriptor method. Moreover, metallic and intrinsic HER-active Ni is introduced and a highly conductive edge-enriched Ni0.2Mo0.8N/Ni hybrid electrocatalyst is constructed. DFT calculations and microkinetics analysis demonstrate that the Ni site and Ni0.2Mo0.8N site have favorable hydroxyl and hydrogen species adsorption energetics, respectively, which can cooperate synergistically towards alkaline hydrogen evolution. The resulting electrocatalyst shows excellent HER electrocatalytic performance with an overpotential of about 70 mV at 300 mA cm−2 and a Tafel slope of 33 mV dec−1. It also offers outstanding operational stability at large current densities up to 200 mA cm−2. Further theoretical calculations suggest a tip-enhanced-like local electric field around the topmost Ni nanoparticles, leading to increased K-ion concentration in the inner Helmholtz plane. The HER kinetics and surface reactant density can be simultaneously improved by this hierarchical Ni0.2Mo0.8N/Ni electrocatalyst. This study might open up new avenues of reasonable design of hierarchical structures for superior electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Large-scale utilization of hydrogen energy is considered as the key to resolve the problem of ever-increasing environmental pollution and energy shortage in today's world. As such, using renewable energy and renewable materials for hydrogen production by water electrolysis has become a research hotspot in the field of hydrogen energy in recent years. Wood, as the most widely sourced and renewable biomass material, has a rich pore structure, numerous hydroxyl groups, excellent mechanical properties, corrosion resistance and modifiable properties. These merits enable wood as a potential candidate for the substrate of self-supporting catalytic electrodes in water electrolysis. However, there is currently a lack of a comprehensive summary of the working mechanism and essential properties of wood-based catalysts for water electrolysis. Here, we provide an overview of the current status, design, construction, and characterization of wood-based catalytic electrodes, including strategies for pretreatment and loading of active sites. Furthermore, we discuss the potential of wood-based catalytic electrodes for large-scale water electrolysis at high current density and propose solutions for industrial-scale implementation. We also explore the future development and challenges of wood-based catalysts in the field of water electrolysis.

Carbonized Wood Decorated with Cobalt‐Nickel Binary Nanoparticles as a Low‐Cost and Efficient Electrode for Water Splitting

Abstract:Using an inexpensive and eco‐friendly wood substrate, herein, a one‐step calcination method is developed to deposit Co‐Ni binary nanoparticles into aligned wood channels and an effective carbonized wood (CW) electrode (termed as Co/Ni‐CW) is fabricated. Well distributed Co‐Ni nanoparticles are achieved by the coordination bonds between the hydroxyl groups on wood matrix and soaked metal cations. Subsequently, high‐temperature calcination promotes the nucleation of Co‐Ni nanoparticles and the formation of CW. With the uniform distribution of Co‐Ni nanoparticles and porous wood structure, not only is a high active surface area, but also the electron and mass diffusion pathways are enhanced. Thus, the as‐prepared Co/Ni‐CW affords the current density of 10 mA cm–2 at low overpotentials of 330 and 157 mV for oxygen and hydrogen evolution, respectively. Remarkably, when the wood‐based bifunctional electrocatalyst is used as both the anode and cathode, a low cell voltage of 1.64 V is required to reach the current density of 10 mA cm–2. Compared with most substrates used in bifunctional electrocatalysts, the abundance, low cost, eco‐friendliness, and easy operation of wood‐based catalysts allow for an active and scalable electrode for water splitting and many other energy storage devices.

Abstract:Coupling urea oxidation reaction (UOR) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in seawater is desirable to produce sustainable and green hydrogen due to the reduced energy consumption. However, developing high-performance UOR/HER electrocatalysts in seawater instead of pure water remains a great challenge. Herein, a (B,P,Co,Fe)-Ni anchored on Paulownia Wood (PW) is proposed to enhance the overall urea-(sea)water splitting performances. The resulting sample only needs a potential of 1.34 V to deliver a large current density of 100 mA cm−2 for alkaline UOR, and features a remarkable durability to maintain 100 mA cm−2 for 100 h. The HER and UOR (HER||UOR) coupled system in alkaline seawater-urea electrolyte to produce H2 demonstrate that a more significantly reduced electrolyzer voltage of 1.67 V is obtained at 100 mA cm−2 than that of HER||OER system (1.98 V). The well-aligned micro-channels and nanopores in wood frameworks not only improve the hydrophilicity and aerophobicity of the whole electrode, which is conducive to the penetration of electrolyte and the release of bubbles, but also shorten the transmission distance of ions and intermediates to accelerate reaction kinetic process. Density functional theory calculations reveal that Co, Fe, P and B co-doping in Ni effectively adjusts the electronic structure and the adsorption/desorption behavior of urea reaction intermediates is regulated by the synergistic effect from multiple components, resulting in the excellent catalytic activity in seawater-urea media. This work promotes the understanding on the surface electronic structure modulation of nanowood via doping strategy and offers a bright prospect to design the advanced UOR/HER catalysts for hydrogen production and urea wastewater treatment.

Abstract:The development of cost-effective, simple, and highly active catalysts for electrochemical water splitting in alkaline electrolytes to produce renewable source H2 is critical to solve the environmental pollution and energy crisis. In this study, a series of nanoflower-like NiFeCo/CW catalytic electrodes were prepared by a facile one-step dynamic hydrogen bubble template (DHBT) method for electrodeposition on carbonized wood (CW), which have excellent HER performance. By reasonably investigating the effects of H+ concentration and time, a catalyst with ideal deposition results was obtained. In 1 M KOH solution, the prepared NiFeCo/CW-450 catalyst exhibits a small overpotential of 37 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm−2, and still possess a satisfactory low overpotential when a larger current density is reached (η400 = 238 mV, η1000 = 298 mV). Furthermore, NiFeCo/CW can keep structure and catalytic performance stable after long-term test. The remarkable HER performance results from the unique nanoflower electrode structure that is uniformly dispersed on CW to fully expose the active site. As a result, this work will provide new inspiration and strategy for the preparation of novel simple, inexpensive and efficient electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution electrodes using earth-abundant resources.

Abstract:A low‐cost, self‐standing, and sustainable electrocatalyst with lattice‐distorted nickel nanoparticles encapsulated in nitrogen‐doped carbon shells grown on a delignified wood carbon skeleton (Ni‐NC@DWC) that integrates 3D low‐tortuosity porous structure of wooden carbon with interface engineering along strong metal‐support interactions, which exhibits encouraging catalytic performances for industrial urea‐assisted water splitting. Developing efficient, low‐cost electrocatalysts for industrial‐level hydrogen production remains a significant challenge. Here lattice‐distorted Ni nanoparticles (NPs) encapsulated within a nitrogen‐doped carbon shell on delignified wood carbon (Ni‐NC@DWC) are constructed through a chitosan‐induced assembly and the pyrolysis process. Experimental and theoretical results indicate that the lattice distortion due to strong metal‐support interactions, boosts electron transfer and reaction intermediate adsorption/desorption, enhancing both the urea oxidation reaction (UOR) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Interestingly, the active center Ni3+‐O is dynamically cyclically generated during the UOR. When utilized as a self‐standing electrode in an alkaline electrolyte, the Ni‐NC@DWC exhibits low potentials of 24 mV and 1.244 V at 100 mA cm−2 for HER and UOR, respectively. Moreover, the Ni‐NC@DWC achieves an ultrasmall cell voltage of 1.13 V at 100 mA cm−2 for urea‐assisted water splitting and can operate stably over 1000 h. Furthermore, when it is self‐assembled as an anion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolyzer, it requires only 1.62 V at 2000 mA cm−2 for industrial urea‐assisted water splitting and operates stably for 150 h without degradation, confirming that it is highly attractive for economical, sustainable, and scalable hydrogen production.

Under-water "Superaerophobic" interface phosphorus-induced CoFe-LDH decorated wood-based porous carbon: An advanced alkaline bifunctional electrode for high-performance overall water splitting

Abstract:The overall water splitting represents a green and sustainable technology to converting renewable energy sources into green hydrogen. The preparation of electrodes with superaerophobic properties can enhance the electrocatalytic performance by accelerating the gas escape process. Herein, a novel P-induced doping CoFe-layered double hydroxide decorated carbonized wood (P-CoFe-LDH/CW) electrode with superaerophobic characteristic was synthesized via a facile hydrothermal and phosphorization method. In particular, the successful induction doping of P on CoFe-LDH optimizes the adsorption energy of H ads . Interestingly, the P-CoFe-LDH/CW electrode constructs a three-phase interface structure with supergasphobic properties, thus facilitating the entire catalytic process by accelerating bubble escape. At a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , the P-CoFe-LDH/CW electrode demonstrated low overpotential for both hydrogen evolution and oxygen evolution reactions in an alkaline electrolyte. Additionally, the P-CoFe-LDH/CW acted as both cathode and anode to facilitate efficient water splitting at a low cell voltage of 1.498 V to attain 10 mA cm −2 . These findings suggest that utilizing wood-derived carbon matrix and CoFe-LDH-based catalysts could lead to new developments in this field. These findings suggest that green, renewable, and low-cost wood-derived carbon electrodes provide a justification for overall water splitting bifunctional electrodes, and facilitate energy-efficient industrial-grade hydrogen production.

Abstract:The choice of substrate is critical to the performance of binder-free electrode for water splitting. Here, carbonized wood is employed as 3D porous diffusion substrates to accommodate conductive transitional metal boride. The composite is efficiently and uniformly deposited on the inner wall of the carbonized wood by means of simple electroless plating technique. The well-defined 3D Ni-W-B/wood electrode requires overpotential of only 46 mV at 50 mA cm −2 for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), outperforming the Ni-W-B/NF electrode with nickel foam as the substrate. The ordered channel structure inherited from the carbonized wood endows the electrode with abundant active site density, fast mass and charge transportation, and efficient transport of evolved gas. The outstanding advantages of environmentally benign nature, low cost, favorable 3D channel structure, and anti-corrosion in harsh condition make wood as a promising substrate for binder-free electrode.

Abstract:Sustainable electrocatalytic hydrogen production is a vital method for producing clean energy. However, the current platinum catalysts are costly and complicated to prepare with low catalytic activity. To obtain efficient catalysts, a facile method with a rational electrode design is essential to improve platinum activity and stability, facilitating the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, we fabricated a self-supported HER composite electrode with abundant platinum activity sites by a simple metal–organic chemical vapor deposition, and nanostructured pine-like platinum was supported on carbon cloth (Pt/CC). Benefiting from the nanostructured pine-like platinum geometry, fast charge transfer, and good structure stability, this Pt/CC composite electrode exhibited excellent HER electrocatalytic activity. For HER, this electrode achieved a low overpotential of only 17.6 mV at 10 mA cm–2 in 1 M KOH. Moreover, Pt/CC exhibits long-term electrochemical durability, maintaining its catalytic activity for more than 30 h. What is more, this strategy can also be used on other self-supported substrates, e.g., nickel foam, to achieve high electrocatalytic activity. Thus, this work provides a simple and versatile method for the preparation of efficient HER catalysts.

Ultrastable and Highly Efficient Hydrogen Evolution by Heterogeneous NiO/Ni Catalysts in Industrial Electrolysis Conditions

Abstract:The charge transfer kinetics of a high-current-driven alkaline water splitting are generally slow, which restricts the production of hydrogen on a large scale. The development of non-precious metal catalysts with high catalytic activity and stability is still a challenge. Here, we have grown in situ a layer of NiO/Ni with a starfruit structure on copper foam by one-step electrodeposition, which exhibits excellent electrocatalytic activity and stability for alkaline hydrogen evolution in industrial environments. The high catalytic activity can be attributed to fast electron and mass transport, excellent intrinsic activity, and superhydrophilicity. Consequently, the NiO/Ni@Cu catalyst exhibits high hydrogen evolution reaction(HER) performance: superior HER performance: overpotentials of 72 and 146 mV (100 and 500 mA cm-2), Tafel slope of 29.2 mV dec-1. Meanwhile, the good HER catalyst also works well in water electrolysis with ultra-low voltage of 1.47 V@100 mA cm-2 and demonstrates remarkable durability during operation for 200 h at 80°C in 6 M KOH. More importantly, the efficient electrolyzer delivers the industrially relevant current density of 500 mA cm-2 at a voltage of 1.54 V, which is 13 times higher than RuO2||Pt/C and three orders of magnitude times NF||NiFe LDH. This work provides a simple and rapid technique for building high-performance, low-cost, industrially available electrodes for efficient alkaline HER.

Abstract:Developing non-noble metal catalysts with low prices, high activity and strong stability plays a vital role in the storage and transformation of clean energy. In this study, the 3D porous structure of NF was modified in situ by electrodeposition. The electrochemical active area of Ni/NF porous structure was increased by 85.4% after 500 s electrodeposition. The structure, composition and morphology of the catalyst were studied by XRD, XPS, SEM, TEM and BET. In order to further improve the activity of HER, the surface of Ni–P/Ni/NF was hydrophilically treated with PSS-PPy. Compared with Ni–P/Ni/NF, the wetting angle of PSS-PPy/Ni–P/Ni/NF decreased by 32.3% from 53.6° to 79.2° and the overpotential decreased by 25.5% from 145 mV to 108 mV at the current density of 10 mA/cm2. PSS-PPy/Ni–P/Ni/NF also showed stable electrocatalytic activity. In a word, these findings have great prospects for the design and preparation of porous electrodes.
