Abstract:Iron-based molybdenum disulfide (Fe-MoS$_2$) has emerged as a Fenton-like catalyst for the highly efficient degradation of antibiotics, but the structure-activity relationship remains elusive. Herein, garland-like MIL-101(Fe)/MoS$_2$ nanosheets (MMS) with dual metal active sites (Fe and Mo) and rich sulfur vacancies were fabricated to directly activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for fast degradation of different organic pollutants (phenols, dyes and drugs), even in real water bodies. The MMS exhibited extremely fast catalytic rate constant of 0.289 min$^{-1}$ in the degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX), which was about 36 and 29 times that of single MoS$_2$ (0.008 min$^{-1}$) and MIL-101(Fe) (0.01 min$^{-1}$). Moreover, MMS with good stability and reusability could reach 92% degradation of SMX after 5 cycles. Quenching experiments and electron spin resonance (ESR) tests revealed that hydroxyl radicals (.OH) and singlet oxygen ($^1$O$_2$) were the dominant reactive oxygen species (ROS) for SMX degradation. The integration of experimental works, characterization techniques and density functional theory (DFT) calculations unraveled that the formation of sulfur vacancies in MMS catalyst could expose more Mo sites, improve the charge density and boost the electron transfer, which was conducive to accelerating the Fe$^{3+}$/Fe$^{2+}$ cycle for enhancing the activation of PMS. Finally, the C-N, N-O, S-N, C-O and C-S bonds of SMX were easily attacked by ROS to generate the nontoxic intermediates in the MMS/PMS/SMX system. This study offers a new approach to designing high-performance Fe-MoS$_2$ catalysts for the removal of organic pollutants.

Abstract:Activation of peroxymonosulfate by heterogeneous catalyst is an efficient process for organic pollutants removal. However, it is difficult for solid-liquid separation of the heterogeneous catalysts in slurry-like batch reaction. In this work, CoS 2 particles were deposited onto an air -laid cloth (denoted as CoS 2 -ALC) and were used as a catalyst for activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS). Unlike traditional slurry-like batch reaction forms, a shallow continuous flow reactor was designed for the installation of a CoS 2 -ALC, thereby improving the activation efficiency of persulfate and rapid solid-liquid separation. The degradation kinetics constant for carbamazepine (CBZ) by the CoS 2 -ALC/PMS process was 0.0748 min -1 , which is 374, 150, 150 times higher than that the CoS 2 - ALC adsorption process, PMS/ALC oxidation process and PMS alone process, respectively. The significantly enhanced degradation efficiency was due to the S in CoS 2 promoting the cycling of Co 2+ /Co 3+ , thereby enhancing the generation of free radical. Parameters such as CoS 2 deposition amount, PMS concentration, water flow rate, water flow height, water flow direction, solution pH, humic acid and anions that affecting the degradation efficiencies were studied. In addition, the degradation by-products of CBZ as well as their toxicity were detected, and a possible degradation pathway were proposed. Finally, expanded outdoor experiments and cycling experiment demonstrated that the CoS 2 -ALC/PMS process is potentially useful in practical settings of wastewater treatment.
Activation of peroxymonosulfate by β-FeOOH@Cia-MoS2 for enhancing degradation of tetracycline: significant roles of surface functional groups and Fe/Mo redox reactions

Abstract:Vertically oriented interstitial atom carbon-anchored molybdenum disulfide (Cia-MoS2) nanospheres loaded with iron oxyhydroxide (β-FeOOH) were proposed for modulating the surface catalytic activity and stability of the unsaturated catalytic system. The β-FeOOH@Cia-MoS2 efficiently activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade 95.4% of tetracycline (TC) within 30 min, owing to the more sulfur vacancies, higher surface hydroxyl density, redox ability and electronic transmission rate of β-FeOOH@Cia-MoS2. According to the characterization and analysis data, the multiple active sites (Fe, Mo and S sites) and oxygen-containing functional groups (C=O, -OH) of β-FeOOH@Cia-MoS2 could promote the activation of PMS to form reactive oxygen species (ROS). The oxidation cycle of Fe(II)/Fe(III) and Mo(IV)/Mo(VI), the electron transfer mediator of rich sulfur vacancies, as well as oxygen-containing functional groups on the surface of β-FeOOH@Cia-MoS2 synergistically promoted the formation of ROS (1O2, FeIV=O, SO4•- and •OH), among which 1O2 was the main active oxidant. In particular, the β-FeOOH@Cia-MoS2/PMS system could still degrade pollutants efficiently and stably after five recycling cycles. Furthermore, this system had a strong anti-interference ability in the actual water body. This study provided a promising strategy for the removal of difficult-to-degrade organic pollutants.
Efficiently activate peroxymonosulfate by Fe3O4@MoS2 for rapid degradation of sulfonamides

Abstract:By coating with MoS2 on the surface of Fe3O4 nanoparticles, a series of Fe3O4@MoS2-X catalysts were successfully synthesized to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for sulfonamides (SA) degradation. Owing to the highly active Mo(IV) could efficiently improve the Fe(II)/Fe(III) cycle, the activity of the heterogeneous reaction was significantly enhanced. Compared with Fe3O4/PMS system, the degradation efficiency of SA in Fe3O4@MoS2-3/PMS system was improved by 4 times and the degradation kinetic rate was improved by 86 times. In addition to SA, Fe3O4@MoS2-3/PMS system also showed high efficiency in treating other representative emerging pollutants (phenols, endocrine disrupting chemicals, drugs or antibiotics). Fe3O4@MoS2-3/PMS is a system in which Fe3O4 and MoS2 are both active components. The main active free radical in Fe3O4@MoS2-3/PMS system is SO4 •-, the generation of HO• may be suppressed after coating MoS2. Meanwhile, exposed Mo(IV) on the surface of MoS2 participates in the reduction of Fe(III) and further promotes the reaction rate. Furthermore, Mo(VI) participates in the generation of non-radical 1O2 which is also an important reactive oxygen species in the system. Fe3O4@MoS2-3 could be applied in a wide initial pH range (3.0 ~ 9.0). Anions (Cl-, NO3 − and SO4 2−) and natural organic matter (humic acid, HA) had little effect on the degradation efficiencies of Fe3O4@MoS2-3. This study provides theoretical and experimental basis for the development and utilization of Fenton-like reaction catalysts.

Abstract:Although Fe-based catalysts for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation for environmental remediation are effective, the poor regeneration of ferric (Fe (III)) to ferrous ions (Fe (II)) in conventional Fe-based catalysts compromises the durability of PMS activation. Given this, an iron-doped molybdenum disulfide MoS 2 (Fe-MoS 2 ) catalyst was prepared via a one-step hydrothermal method, and it was demonstrated to sustain PMS activation for removing tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) from aqueous solution under visible-light irradiation. The as-prepared Fe-MoS 2 catalysts feature dual metallic active sites of Fe and Mo atoms to enhance photoelectrons production from MoS 2 for Fe (II) regeneration, thereby preventing iron leakage. Moreover, the Fe-MoS 2 catalysts exhibited good recyclability, enabling multiple cycles of TCH degradation in the presence of PMS under the irradiation of visible-light. In addition, we confirmed that the generated radicals (SO 4 •− , O 2 •− , and •OH) and non-radical species ( 1 O 2 and h + ) were responsible for TCH degradation. We also determined critical intermediates during TCH degradation and proposed TCH degradation pathways. This study develops a high-performance Fe-doped MoS 2 photocatalyst for PMS activation and paves the way for leveraging dual metallic sites on catalysts for enhancing water purification.

Abstract:A hollow sphere (FeCo@C) is developed and serves as a highly efficient catalyst of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for degradation of orange G (OG) with a pseudo first-order constant of 0.119 min−1 that was 5.15 and 1.43 times of Fe@C and Co@C, respectively. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations demonstrated that the (110) crystal plane of FeCo alloy was the most active site for activation of PMS to generate SO4− and OH. The quenching experiments and EPR test indicated that SO4−, OH, and 1O2 were generated in FeCo@C/PMS system and acted as the predominant reactive species. The synergistic effects between Fe and Co species were responsible for the high catalytic performance of FeCo@C. The carbon in FeCo@C act as a carrier to improve the stability with good reusability over five cycles at pH 7.0 and 9.0, as well as an electron mediator and activator to enhance the catalytic performance. Effects of PMS dosage, catalyst concentration, solution pH, and humic acids on OG removal were also investigated. Furthermore, the reduced toxicity of intermediate products was verified by quantitative structure–activity relationship (QSAR). This work demonstrates a feasible strategy for designing of high-performance and stable catalysts for the organic pollutant degradation based on PMS oxidation processes.

Abstract:Rational design of the low-cost, highly efficient and easily recyclable catalyst to directly activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) is crucial for the efficient removal of organic pollutants in the sewage treatment. Herein, hyperdispersed CoFe2O4 spinel nanoparticles were successfully in-situ fabricated on biomass-derived 3D porous carbon framework (C) by the facile one-step solvothermal method (CoFe2O4/C). These as-prepared CoFe2O4/C exhibit superior performance in the Fenton-like removal of four quinolones by the combination of experimental work and theoretical calculation. Experimental results prove that CoFe2O4/C catalyst can directly activate PMS to efficiently remove four types of quinolones in 12 min without the external energy consumption. The characterization results show that hyperdispersed CoFe2O4 (18.0 ± 5.0 nm) nanoparticles are uniformly anchored on the matrix of C, exhibit a large specific surface area of 733.1 m2/g, and present rich oxygen vacancies (Ovs), thus exposing more reactive sites and generating more reactive oxygen species (ROS). In CoFe2O4/C + PMS system, ∼97.5% of ciprofloxacin (CIP) is removed within 12 min, which is far superior to other candidates previously reported. Other quinolones (e.g., ∼96.8% of ofloxacin (OFL), ∼100% of levofloxacin (LEV), and ∼86.4% of norfloxacin (NOR)) can also be efficiently degraded under the same conditions. Based on quenching experiments, electron spin resonance spectroscopy (ESR), and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, these superior activities are mainly due to the free radical (SO4·-, ·OH, and ·O2–) and non-free radical (1O2), whereas SO4·- and ·OH are the major reactive oxygen species. In addition, these CoFe2O4/C catalysts remain stable even after five cycles. Subsequently, degradation pathways are rationally proposed. This work provides a feasible and universal strategy for the direct activation of PMS in wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Commercial molybdenum carbide (Mo2C) and ferrous iron (Fe2+) were investigated for the first time to co-catalyze the activation of H2O2 for the treatment of organic contaminants. Compared with traditional Fenton process, the presence of Mo2C decomposed hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) more effectively and accelerated the conversion of Fe3+/Fe2+. The Rhodamine B (RhB) degradation rate constant in Mo2C/Fe2+/H2O2 reached appropriately three times that in Fe2+/H2O2, and the co-catalytic reactivity of Mo2C was significantly higher than that of MoS2. In addition, Mo2C/Fe2+/H2O2 exhibited a board effective pH range of 2.8–8.8, and four-cycle experiments confirmed the stability and reusability of Mo2C. The results of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) indicated that Mo(Ⅱ) and Mo(IV) played major roles in Fe3+ reduction. Electron Paramagnetic Resonance analysis and quenching experiments demonstrated that hydroxyl radical (·OH), superoxide anion radical (O2 −) and singlet oxygen radical (1O2) were all involved in Mo2C/Fe2+/H2O2. Particularly, Mo2C/Fe2+/H2O2 significantly enhanced the generation of ·OH and 1O2 in comparison to Fe2+/H2O2. Moreover, toxicity assessment analysis by ECOSAR suggested that the toxicity of most degradation products of RhB decreased after treatment. Overall, this study offers a promising Mo2C co-catalyzed Fenton process for rapid and efficient abatement of organic contaminants.

Abstract:Introducing co-catalysts to enhance the activation of cuprous-mediated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and induce the continuous generation of highly reactive oxygen species is promising. The function, effectiveness, and acceleration mechanism of co-catalysts in the cuprous-mediated PMS activation process were fully explored in this work, which focused on rhodamine B as the target contaminants. The results demonstrated that molybdenum (Mo) powder was a superb co-catalyst, and that the reaction of cuprous-mediated PMS system was carried out by surface Mo species as opposed to Mo ions in the solution. The Cu (II)/Cu(I) cycle was primarily encouraged by the Mo0, which also caused abundant ·HO and 1O2 and minimal SO4·- and ·O2- to be produced from PMS. The Mo/Cu2+/PMS system exhibited high removal efficiency towards typical pollutants, especially ciprofloxacin, methyl orange, malachite green, and crystal violet, with removal rates up to 93%, 99%, 97%, and 92%, respectively. Additionally, this system showed excellent adaptability to complex water environments. After four cycles, the Mo powder retained its properties and morphology, and the target pollutants could still maintain an 82% degradation efficiency. This study provides a basis for enhancing cuprous-mediated PMS activation for wastewater treatment.

Abstract:To address conventional powder catalysts' recovery and aggregation issues that greatly restrain their practical application, a recoverable graphene oxide (GO)-supported 3D-MoS2/FeCo2O4 sponge (SFCMG) was developed through a simple impregnation pyrolysis method. SFCMG can efficiently activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to produce reactive species for rapid degradation of rhodamine B (RhB), with 95.0% and 100% of RhB being removed within 2 min and 10 min, respectively. The presence of GO enhances the electron transfer performance of the sponge, and the three-dimensional melamine sponge serves as a substrate to provide a highly dispersed carrier for FeCo2O4 and MoS2/GO hybrid sheets. SFCMG exhibits a synergistic catalytic effect of Fe and Co, and facilitates the redox cycles of Fe(III)/Fe(II) and Co(III)/Co(II) by MoS2 co-catalysis, which enhances its catalytic activity. Electron paramagnetic resonance results demonstrate that SO4•−, ·O2− and 1O2 are all involved in SFCMG/PMS system, and 1O2 played a prominent role in RhB degradation. The system has good resistance to anions (Cl−, SO42−, and H2PO4−) and humic acid and excellent performance for many typical contaminants degradation. Additionally, it works efficiently over a wide pH range (3–9) and possesses high stability and reusability with the metal leaching far below the safety standards. The present study extends the practical application of metal co-catalysis and offers a promising Fenton-like catalyst for the treatment of organic wastewater.

Abstract:The widespread use of emerging refractory organic contaminants poses a significant threat to human health, prompting the need for a cost-effective and efficient removal strategy. While the iron ions/PMS system effectively removes organic pollutants, slow Fe 3+ to Fe 2+ transformation hampers its efficiency, and the homogeneous distribution of iron ions complicates separation, resulting in secondary sludge pollution. Herein, we developed a novel submicron Fe-MoS 2 (S-Fe-MoS 2 ) catalyst with abundant surface cationic groups and sulfur vacancy through a cationic polyacrylamide aerogels (CPAMA) confined hydrothermal synthesis strategy. These features promote active site exposure, enhance reactant adsorption, and accelerate electron transfer between Mo and Fe sites, improving catalytic kinetics and promoting Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ cycle for PMS activation. As a result, the S-Fe-MoS 2 /PMS system exhibited a high catalytic rate constant ( k obs ) of 0.32 min −1 , in the degradation of 4-chlorophenol (4-CP), 1.5 times higher than that of the conventional Fe-MoS 2 /PMS system. It also achieved 82.9% total organic carbon (TOC) degradation within 60 min. Additionally, it possessed similar degradation performance for various organic pollutants, along with remarkable reusability (four cycles) and broad pH adaptability (2–8), indicating significant potential for widespread application. This study provided a new way for developing advanced heterogeneous catalysts with high efficiency for water treatment.

Abstract:Persulfate-based advanced oxidation processes (PS-AOPs) show a bright prospect in sewage purification. The development of efficient catalysts with simple preparation process and eco-friendliness is the key for their applying in practical water treatment. Herein, a bimetallic Cu-Fe metal organic framework (MOF) was simply synthesized by using one-pot solvothermal methods and employed for activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade organic pollutants in water. The Cu-Fe-MOF/PMS exhibited excellent degradation efficiencies (over 95% in 30 min) for a variety of pollutants, including phenol, bisphenol A, 2,4-dichlorophenol, methyl blue, rhodamine B, tetracycline and sulfamethoxazole. The degradation efficiency was impacted by dosages of Cu-Fe-MOF, PMS concentrations, reaction temperature, solution pH and anionic species. Phenol could be efficiently decomposed in a wide pH range of 5-9, with the highest degradation and mineralization efficiency of nearly 100% and 70%, respectively. Free radicals and non-free radicals participated in degrading of phenol at the same time, with dominantly free radical process, because sulfate radicals (SO4·-) and hydroxyl radicals (·OH) were the primary active substances by contribution calculation. Cu-Fe-MOF was acted as electron shuttle between molecules of phenol and PMS, and the cooperation effect of Fe and Cu on the Cu-Fe-MOF promoted the electron transfer, achieving the high degradation efficiency of phenol. Thus, Cu-Fe-MOF is an ideal catalyst for activating PMS, which is conducive to promote the applying of catalyst-activated PMS processes for practical wastewater treatments.
Mediated Peroxymonosulfate Activation at the Single Atom Fe-N3O1 Sites: Synergistic Degradation of Antibiotics by Two Non-Radical Pathways

Abstract:The activation of persulfates to degrade refractory organic pollutants is a hot issue in advanced oxidation right now. Here, it is reported that single-atom Fe-incorporated carbon nitride (Fe-CN-650) can effectively activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for sulfamethoxazole (SMX) removal. Through some characterization techniques and DFT calculation, it is proved that Fe single atoms in Fe-CN-650 exist mainly in the form of Fe-N3O1 coordination, and Fe-N3O1 exhibited better affinity for PMS than the traditional Fe-N4 structure. The degradation rate constant of SMX in the Fe-CN-650/PMS system reached 0.472 min-1, and 90.80% of SMX can still be effectively degraded within 10 min after five consecutive recovery cycles. The radical quenching experiment and electrochemical analysis confirm that the pollutants are mainly degraded by two non-radical pathways through 1O2 and Fe(IV)═O induced at the Fe-N3O1 sites. In addition, the intermediate products of SMX degradation in the Fe-CN-650/PMS system show toxicity attenuation or non-toxicity. This study offers valuable insights into the design of carbon-based single-atom catalysts and provides a potential remediation technology for the optimum activation of PMS to disintegrate organic pollutants.

Abstract:Processes that ensure the rapid degradation of organic pollutants are urgently required in wastewater treatment. Heterogeneous catalysts in sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs) have a low catalytic efficiency, long reaction time, and are difficult to recover. Rationally designed magnetically separable Fe3O4-CoS2-0.4 that was rich in sulfur and oxygen vacancies was used as an efficient catalyst for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation to rapidly degrade various dyes and antibiotics. The synergistic effect of Fe, Co and S on the activation of PMS and the sulfur and oxygen vacancy generated by the composite greatly promoted the catalytic performance, in which the singlet oxygen (1O2) generated was the main active species in the degradation process. Fe3O4-CoS2-0.4 is easily separated from the reaction solution by magnets and shows good recyclability and stability in removing MB, achieving removal rates of 100%, 100% and 96.07% in the first, second and third cycles, respectively. Fe3O4-modified CoS2 also greatly reduces the ion leaching of cobalt ions and the secondary pollution. In addition, for several other typical dyes and antibiotics (metronidazole, phenol, tetracycline, levofloxacin, crystal violet, malachite green, and rhodamine B), high removal rates (100%, 100%, 88.3%, 90.3%, 100%, 100%, and 100%, respectively) were achieved in a short time.

Abstract:The use of cocatalyst in Fenton-like reactions has been demonstrated as a reliable approach to improve their efficiency via accelerating the circulation of Fe3+/Fe2+. In this study, we for the first time used natural pyrite (FeS2) as a Fenton-like cocatalyst to improve the reactivity of Fe3+ instead of the widely investigated molybdenum disulfide that releases potential harmful molybdenum ions. The presence of FeS2 significantly improved the degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) by Fe3+-peroxymonosulfate (PMS); near complete removal of SMX by FeS2-Fe3+-PMS was achieved, while no obvious removal of SMX by Fe3+-PMS was noticed. Meanwhile, the surface area-normalized rate constant of SMX degradation by FeS2-Fe3+-PMS was more than 18 times higher than that by MoS2-Fe3+-PMS. FeS2-Fe3+-PMS worked effectively in a wide range of pH values from 3.0 to 10.0. Although hydroxyl radicals, sulfate radicals, superoxide anion radicals, and singlet oxygen were recorded by electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, only sulfate radicals were mainly responsible for the degradation. Sulfide ions were identified as one of the intermediates, but the reactive species generated by their interaction with PMS did not contribute to the degradation. FeS2 had a good stability by continually accelerating the circulation of Fe3+/Fe2+. The findings from this study reveal a highly efficient cocatalyst for Fenton-like reactions.

Abstract:A nonradical oxidation-based peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation is an attractive process for pollutant elimination. Herein, a dual-metal-organic framework (MOF) assisted strategy to construct magnetic Fe-Mn oxycarbide anchored on N-doped carbon (FeMn@NC) was proposed for PMS activation. It was found that FeMn@NC-800 displayed superior activity than other comparable counterparts, with nearly 100% degradation of sulfamethazine (SMZ) within 30 min. Electron paramagnetic resonance and quenching tests revealed that nonradical oxidation ( 1 O 2 and high-valent metal-oxo species) dominated the SMZ degradation process. Experimental and theoretical calculations demonstrated that FeMn oxycarbide preferred adsorbing the terminal O of PMS, which could improve the PMS oxidization to produce SO 5 •− , further generating 1 O 2 . Moreover, dual active sites could lower the energy barrier to cleave the O−O bond of PMS to form high-valent FeMn = O species. The present study provided a clue to rationally design high-performance heterogeneous catalysts and proposed a novel nonradical-based catalytic oxidation for environmental cleaning.

Abstract:Peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-based advanced oxidation technology have emerged as a promising technology for organic pollutant remediation. In this study, carbon nitride encapsulated Fe 0 catalysts (Fe-N/C) were synthesized for PMS activation towards organic pollutant degradation. The prepared Fe-N/C-700 catalyst with high BET surface area (194.08 m 2 ·g −1 ), abundant graphite N and Fe 0 sites exhibited superior activity. Over 98.58 % of Methylene blue (MB, 10 mg·L −1 ) could be rapidly degraded within 10 min in Fe-N/C-700/PMS system, and the rate constant reached to 1.21 min −1 . Fe-N/C-700/PMS system also exhibited prominent advantages of adapting to a broad solution pH range (3–11), strong resistance to inorganic ions and natural organic matter, long-term stability and excellent solid-liquid separation performance. The graphitic N and Fe 0 in Fe-N/C-700 were the main reactive sites for activating PMS to generate 1 O 2 , and HV-Fe = O. These reactive oxygen species (ROS) collectively contributed to the degradation of MB. Besides, acid red G (ARG), tetracycline (TC), crystal violet (CV), methyl orange (MO) can also be efficiently removed within 10 min in Fe-N/C-700/PMS system. Therefore, this study provided a promising alternative approach for the degradation of organic contaminants in water.

Abstract:Catalysts with metal nanocluster and single-atom sites have been used extensively to activate persulfate to remove recalcitrant pollutants while the bimetallic catalyst remains limited researches. Here, a bimetallic C3N4 catalyst with relatively high Fe nanocluster and single-atom Co loadings (7.6% and 3.7%, respectively) (FeNCCoSA-C3N4) was successfully synthesized. FeNCCoSA-C3N4 showed a synergistic coefficient of 7.8 relative to Fe-C3N4 and Co-C3N4 for degrading paracetamol, remarkedly outperforming the counterpart monometallic heterogeneous catalysts, metal ions homogeneous catalyst, or previously reported catalysts in terms of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation and paracetamol mitigation. The FeNCCoSA-C3N4/PMS complex contributed to > 60% of paracetamol degradation, whereas radical species and high-valent metal-oxo species contributed 13.3%–15.6% of paracetamol degradation. FeNCCoSA-C3N4/PMS preferentially oxidizes organic pollutants containing electron-donating moieties but may be negatively affected by inorganic carbon and chloride ions. Synthesizing the bimetallic cluster/atom catalyst offers a new way of achieving efficient PMS activation and pollutant oxidation via catalyst/PMS complex formation and electron-transfer reactions.

Abstract:Novel catalysts with multiple active sites and rapid separation are required to effectively activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the removal of organic pollutants from water. Therefore, an integrated catalyst for PMS activation was developed by directly forming Co-Fe Prussian blue analogs on a three-dimensional porous nickel foam (NF), which were subsequently phosphorylated to obtain cobalt-iron bimetallic phosphide (FeCoP@NF). The FeCoP@NF/PMS system efficiently degraded dye wastewater within 20 min. The system exhibited excellent catalytic degradation over a broad pH range and at high dye concentrations due to the presence of unique asymmetrically charged Coa+ and Pb- dual active sites formed by cobalt phosphides within FeCoP@NF. These active sites significantly enhanced the catalytic activity of PMS. The activation mechanism of PMS involves phosphorylation that accelerates electron transfer from FeCoP@NF to PMS, to generate SO4·-, ·OH, O2·-, and 1O2 active species. Three-dimensional FeCoP@NF could be readily recycled and showed good stability for PMS activation. In this study, a highly efficient, stable, and readily recyclable integrated catalyst was developed. This catalyst system effectively resolves the separation and recovery issues associated with conventional powder catalysts and has a wide range of potential applications in wastewater treatment.
