Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are recognized as a significant challenge to water treatment processes due to their ability to adsorb or accumulate alginate foulants, impacting the coagulation-ultrafiltration (CUF) process. In this study, the mechanisms of membrane fouling caused by MPs under varying dosages of polymeric aluminum chloride (PAC) coagulant in the CUF process were investigated. It was revealed that MPs contribute to membrane fouling, which initially intensifies and then alleviates as coagulant concentration increases, with a turning point at 0.05 mM PAC dosage. The most significant alleviation of membrane fouling was observed at 0.2 mM PAC dosage. An in-depth analysis of interfacial interaction energy changes during filtration was conducted using the extended Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (XDLVO) theory, demonstrating how MPs alter the interaction forces between foulants and the membrane surface, leading to either the exacerbation or mitigation of fouling. Additionally, it was shown that at optimal coagulant concentrations, the presence of MPs promotes the formation of a loose and porous cake layer, disrupting the original structure and creating a more open block structure, thereby alleviating membrane fouling. These findings provide valuable insights for optimizing the CUF process in microplastic-containing water treatment, presenting a novel approach to enhancing efficiency and reducing membrane fouling.
Enhanced membrane fouling by microplastics during nanofiltration of secondary effluent considering secretion, interaction and deposition of extracellular polymeric substances

Abstract:Microplastic (MP) has been found to influence membrane fouling during microfiltration/ultrafiltration processes in direct and indirect ways by acting as fouling components and changing microbial activities, respectively. However, there is no relevant research about the contribution of MPs to nanofiltration membrane fouling. In this study, for the first time, the impacts of MPs on membrane fouling during the nanofiltration of secondary effluent (SE) were systematically investigated from the perspective of bacterial extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) secretion, their interaction with coexisting pollutants and also deposition. Membrane flux behaviors indicate that MPs simultaneously aggravated the short-term and long-term membrane fouling resistance of nanofiltration by 46 % and 27 %, respectively. ATR-FTIR, XPS and spectrophotometry spectra demonstrate that the deteriorated membrane fouling by MPs directly resulted from the increased accumulation of protein-like, polysaccharides-like and humic-like substances on membranes. EEM spectra further confirmed that MPs preferred to induce serious cake layers, which dominated membrane flux decline but hindered pore fouling. According to CLSM and SEM-EDS mappings, MPs in SE could stimulate microbial activities and then aggravate EPS secretion, after which their interaction with Ca2+ was also enhanced in bulk solution. The cross-linker nets could promote the deposition of other unlinked pollutants on membranes. Besides, MPs could weaken the rejection of certain dissolved organic matters (from 57 % to 52 % on the 50th day of filtration) by aggravating cake-enhanced concentration polarization (CECP), but improved the average removal of inorganic salts from 58 % to 63 % by improving their back diffusion through cake layers. Based on these analyses, the mechanisms of MP-enhanced membrane fouling during the nanofiltration of SE can be thoroughly revealed.

Abstract:NaClO, as a common membrane cleaning agent were introduced from the permeate side across membrane, which could diffuse into MBR membrane pool. Microplastics would also accumulate in MBR membrane pool during wastewater treatment, thus, NaClO and MPs are co-exposed to activated sludge. This study investigated the effects of PET-MPs (0, 50, 100 and 300 mu g/g-ss) on activated sludge with or without NaClO stress. The presence of PET-MPs had no significant impact on nitrification and denitrification rates, but when exposed to NaClO, the increasing level of PET-MPs (i.e., from 0 to 300 mu g/g-ss) inhibited the nitrification (94.85 % to 65.90 %) and denitrification (88.68 % to 60.09 %) rates. For microbial metabolism (key enzymes) evaluated, the key enzymes related to organic matter biodegradation, nitrification as well as denitrification were both inhibited with PET- MPs level rise under NaClO stress. The generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the release of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) increased significantly indicating NaClO caused the toxicity of MPs to activated sludge by enhancing the oxidative stress level. Correspondingly, a variation in abundance related to membrane pollution, nitrification, and denitrification after exposure to PET-MPs with NaClO stress accompanied these adverse effects.

Abstract:Genetic differences play a significant role in generating individual differences in cognitive abilities. Studies have linked common polymorphisms (valine to methionine substitution; VAL/MET) in the catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) to cognitive differences between individuals. However, not all studies support these associations and hence, the impact of these polymorphisms on cognition is unclear. Here, we investigated the effect of COMT VAL158MET and BDNF VAL66MET polymorphisms and their interaction on cognitive performance measured longitudinally over 8 years in a population-based sample of older adults (60-64 years at baseline; n = 400). We used multilevel models to examine differences between individuals with different genotypes in performance on psychometric tests while controlling for age, sex, and education. We observed significant main and interaction effects of COMT and BDNF genotypes on reaction time (RT) and intraindividual variability in RT (IIV-RT). Subjects with at least one copy of the COMT*MET allele (which is associated with higher prefrontal dopamine) had significantly faster RT (both simple and choice RT) and less IIV-RT in both tasks than those without the COMT*MET allele when they also carried one or more BDNF*MET alleles (which is associated with lower activity-dependent BDNF secretion). However, RT and IIV-RT did not differ significantly between the COMT genotypes in the absence of the BDNF*MET allele. These polymorphisms had no significant effect on within person change in RT or IIV-RT. Our findings indicate that the interaction between common variants of COMT and BDNF explain individual differences in RT and IIV-RT but do not explain age-related decline in these abilities.
Comprehensive effects of microplastics on algae-laden surface water treatment by coagulation-ultrafiltration combined process: Algae cultivation, coagulation performance and membrane fouling development

Abstract:In coastal areas, the surface water has been simultaneously exposed to the algae blooms caused by eutrophication and the microplastics (MPs) pollution originating from active human activities. As a practical alternative to address these issues in drinking water plant, coagulation-ultrafiltration combined process is still confronted with the limited understanding about the comprehensive effects of MPs on algae-laden surface water (ASW) treatment. Considering the migration of MPs in nature environment and drinking water treatment process, this study first aims to systematically investigate the influence of MPs on algae cultivation, coagulation performance and membrane fouling development. The results of algae cultivation indicate that MPs stimulated the algae activity by 58 % and then constantly suppressed the secretion of protein-like, humic-like and polysaccharide-like metabolites. The variation of particle size distribution and zeta potential confirm that MPs acted as nuclei to facilitate the development of large coagulation flocs with an increasing average size from 82.6 μm to 107.6 μm, during which the negatively charged pollutants were neutralized and removed from ASW. According to the SEM images, MPs could destroy the structure of fouling layer on 50 kDa membranes during the filtration of ASW coagulation effluent. Its synergistic effect with the enhanced coagulation performance and the suppressed EOM secretion contributed to the alleviation of membrane fouling caused by overlapped large-sized foulants. However, the interaction between the enriched organic foulants by MPs and the deposited coagulants on 300 kDa membranes facilitated the development of cake layer, leading to the deterioration of membrane permeability. This study emphasizes the importance in concerning the existence of MPs during the treatment of ASW by coagulation-ultrafiltration combined process and their exact influence in water purification efficiency.

Abstract:In this work, a serious of filtration experiments were designed and implemented to compare the effects of different metal cations (Ca2+, Fe3+, and Al3+) on fouling by sodium alginate. As indicated by the experimental results, these three types of cations all induced biphasic filtration behavior by 50 mg/L sodium alginate, that addition of these cations initially aggravated the fouling but then mitigated it upon further addition. The maximum specific filtration resistance (αav) increased in the following order: Al (34.5 ± 1.2 1014 mg/kg) < Ca (52.4 ± 2.5 1014 mg/kg) ≈Fe (54.1 ± 1.2 1014 mg/kg), but the corresponding critical concentration of the cation was in the order: Al3+ (0.02 mM) = Fe3+ (0.02 mM) 0.4 μm). Similar biphasic fouling behavior also observed in the co-existence of Ca2+ and Fe3+/Al3+, but the comparable maximum αav values were obtained at much lower ion concentrations. Besides changes in the transparent exopolymer particle concentration, the hindered back transport of different sodium alginate molecules and steric effect also contributed to the synergistic fouling. Furthermore, there was little competition between the binding sites for divalent and trivalent ions, but the coiling behavior could be limited by changing the cation dosing sequence, leading to a weakened synergistic effect. This study links cation types, transparent exopolymer particle formations and fouling layer structures, with practical relevance for the hydraulic performance of low-pressure membranes, hopefully leading to their wider application in water treatment.

Abstract:Mixtures of silica nanoparticles (SiO2 NPs) and natural organic matter (NOM) are ubiquitous in natural aquatic environments and pose risks to organisms. Ultrafiltration (UF) membranes can effectively remove SiO2 NP–NOM mixtures. However, the corresponding membrane fouling mechanisms, particularly under different solution conditions, have not yet been studied. In this work, the effect of solution chemistry on polyethersulfone (PES) UF membrane fouling caused by a SiO2 NP–NOM mixture was investigated at different pH levels, ionic strengths, and calcium concentrations. The corresponding membrane fouling mechanisms, i.e., Lifshitz–van der Waals (LW), electrostatic (EL), and acid–base (AB) interactions, were quantitatively evaluated using the extended Derjaguin–Landau–Verwey–Overbeek (xDLVO) theory. It was found that the extent of membrane fouling increased with decreasing pH, increasing ionic strength, and increasing calcium concentration. The attractive AB interaction between the clean/fouled membrane and foulant was the major fouling mechanism in both the initial adhesion and later cohesion stages, while the attractive LW and repulsive EL interactions were less important. The change of fouling potential with solution chemistry was negatively correlated with the calculated interaction energy, indicating that the UF membrane fouling behavior under different solution conditions can be effectively explained and predicted using the xDLVO theory.

Abstract:Biofouling of nanofiltration (NF) membranes is a major impediment in wastewater reclamation. However, research on the fouling process, including conditioning and subsequent biofouling in complicated systems, is limited. In this study, the combined effects of organic matter (OM) and calcium on Pseudomonas aeruginosa-induced fouling are systematically investigated and verified through an analysis of permeate flux, foulants, and membrane surface properties (roughness, surface charge, hydrophobicity). Sodium alginate (SA), bovine serum albumin (BSA), and humic acid (HA) are selected as model organics for polysaccharides, proteins, and humic substances in wastewater, respectively. Results show that approximately 8% of permeability is lost during organic-free conditioning in the absence and presence of Ca2+. However, subsequent biofouling is reduced at 5 and 8mM Ca2+. In the presence of OM, Ca2+ plays an important role in organic conditioning and subsequent biofouling. SA and HA accelerate organic conditioning with the increase in Ca2+ concentration but inhibit subsequent biofouling. By contrast, severe biofouling occurs in the presence of BSA at 2mM Ca2+, as revealed by both flux decline and the biomass accumulation. Organic conditioning significantly influences membrane surface properties and results in biomass retention on hydrophobic and rough surfaces conditioned with BSA.

Abstract:The mechanical and chemical breakdown of plastic litter increases the release of nano- and microplastics, which have the potential to impact the performance of membranes processes used in water treatment plants. In this work, the extent of fouling of a commercial ultrafiltration poly(sulfone) membrane induced by nano- and microplastics ranging from 13 to 690 nm in size was investigated. The cross-flow filtration of the plastic particles over 48 h at a 1 bar pressure reduced the permeate water flux by 38% compared to pure water filtration. Over 25% of the nano- and microplastics initially present in the feed were absorbed onto the membrane surface within the 48 h of filtration. Particulate fouling mechanism was sequentially modelled into intermediate and complete pore blockage, followed by cake layer formation. Hydrophobic interactions and surface repulsion forces were found to dictate the adsorption rate of the nano- and microplastics onto the membrane surface. This work opens the understanding of NPs/MPs interactions with water filtration processes and demonstrates the need to develop solutions limiting the impact of NPs/MPs on current treating units.

A Comprehensive Analysis of the Impact of Inorganic Matter on Membrane Organic Fouling: A Mini Review

Abstract:Membrane fouling is a non-negligible issue affecting the performance of membrane systems. Particularly, organic fouling is the most persistent and severe form of fouling. The complexation between inorganic and organic matter may exacerbate membrane organic fouling. This mini review systematically analyzes the role of inorganic matter in membrane organic fouling. Inorganic substances, such as metal ions and silica, can interact with organic foulants like humic acids, polysaccharides, and proteins through ionic bonding, hydrogen bonding, coordination, and van der Waals interactions. These interactions facilitate the formation of larger aggregates that exacerbate fouling, especially for reverse osmosis membranes. Molecular simulations using molecular dynamics (MD) and density functional theory (DFT) provide valuable mechanistic insights complementing fouling experiments. Polysaccharide fouling is mainly governed by transparent exopolymer particle (TEP) formations induced by inorganic ion bridging. Inorganic coagulants like aluminum and iron salts mitigate fouling for ultrafiltration but not reverse osmosis membranes. This review summarizes the effects of critical inorganic constituents on fouling by major organic foulants, providing an important reference for membrane fouling modeling and fouling control strategies.
Combined fouling of forward osmosis membrane by alginate and TiO2 nanoparticles and fouling mitigation mechanisms

Abstract:Forward osmosis (FO) is a promising technology for water treatment, but its fouling mechanisms are poorly understood compared to other membrane-based processes. This study focuses on combined fouling caused by alginate (SA) and TiO2 nanoparticles, which serve as representative organic and inorganic foulants, respectively. The results show that the co-presence of TiO2 can effectively mitigate membrane fouling by SA under vas feed chemistries (Ca2+ concentrations). The negative charge of the SA foulants increased in the presence of TiO2, alleviating SA aggregation due to electrostatic and steric stabilization. The behavior and mechanisms of membrane fouling were characterized by attenuated total reflection-Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) coupled with isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) at the molecular level. Combined SA-TiO2 had a lower binding affinity to Ca2+ than single SA, which was spontaneously exothermic and dominated by electrostatic interaction to reduce membrane fouling. This study provides new insight into the mechanisms of nanoparticles-mediated organic fouling in the FO process. It also demonstrates that an integrated ATR-FTIR/ITC/AFM approach can provide useful information for understanding other complicated interactions between inorganic and organic foulants.

Abstract:Forward osmosis (FO) membranes have potential for the efficient water and wastewater treatment applications. However, their development has faced significant challenges due to their fouling propensity. In this study, FO membranes modified with sulfobetaine zwitterions (i.e., [2-(Methacryloyloxy)ethyl]dimethyl-(3-sulfopropyl) ammonium hydroxide) were fabricated and used for the first time to address microplastic (MP) fouling issue. Water flux, reverse salt flux (RSF), fouling, and flux recovery were evaluated for the membranes loaded with different quantities of the zwitterions ranging from 0.25 % to 2 %. The developed membranes were tested over 49 h with feed solutions containing polyethylene MPs and bovine serum albumin (BSA) to evaluate their fouling resistance. The synergistic effects of the two foulants indicated that the MPs were the primary cause of fouling. The presence of BSA effectively reduced the blocking effect of MPs and therefore lowers overall fouling. Additionally, improved water flux, structural parameter ( S ), and RSF were reported for the modified membranes. The zwitterion's unique structure with hydrophilic groups (CO and OSO) resulted in high flux recovery rates of over 90 % for all modified membranes within only 30 min of physical cleaning upon fouling tests. The results demonstrate the high potential of the modification method for targeting the removal of MPs in TFC-based membranes.

Fouling potentials and properties of foulants in an innovative algal-sludge membrane bioreactor

Abstract:This study focused on the effect of algae on the fouling potential and dynamic fouling variation of foulants in an innovative algal-sludge membrane bioreactor (AS-MBR). Filtration experiments revealed that the soluble extracellular polymeric substance (S-EPS) released by the algal-sludge flocs showed a slower diminishing rate of flux than that released by the sludge flocs. The intermediate blocking and cake filtration models demonstrated the major mechanisms, which implied a reduction in the driving force of pore blocking and fouling layer formation induced by the algal-bacterial S-EPS. Furthermore, the relative flux decrements of loosely bound EPS (LB-EPS) and tightly bound EPS (TB-EPS) in the AS-MBR were lower than those of the control without algae, indicating a reduction in the fouling potential of the bound EPS (B-EPS) in the algal-sludge flocs compared to the control. This could be attributed to the reduction in the membrane intercepts for LB- and TB-EPS, respectively. Specifically, S-EPS and B-EPS released by algal-sludge flocs had a lower free energy of cohesion (<math>ΔGcoh</math>) than those released by sludge flocs (decreased of 19.14%, 45.93%, and 43.34% for the S-EPS, LB-EPS, and TB-EPS, respectively). Furthermore, these changes could contribute to the decrease in the relative abundance of adsorbed polysaccharide- and protein-like substances in the B-EPS (released by algal-sludge flocs) filtration membrane, leading to the formation of less rough peaks and valleys in the fouling layer in the AS-MBR. Accordingly, the lower fouling propensity and weaker cohesion energy of S-EPS and B-EPS tend to decrease the hydrophobicity and the free energy of the floc surface and further provide less driving force to adhere to the membrane, resulting in significant mitigation of membrane fouling in the AS-MBR. Therefore, the overall fouling behavior caused by S-EPS, B-EPS and flocs should be comprehensively considered to achieve an underlying understanding of the algal effect on membrane fouling control.

Membrane Fouling in Ultrafiltration of Natural Water after Pretreatment to Different Extents

Abstract:The combined fouling during ultrafiltration (UF) of surface water pretreated to different extents was investigated to disclose the roles of polysaccharides, proteins, and inorganic particles in UF membrane fouling. Both reversible and irreversible fouling decreased with enhanced pretreatment (biologically active carbon (BAC) treatment and sand filtration). The sand filter effluent fouled the membrane very slowly. The UF membrane removed turbidity to less than 0.1 nephelometric turbidity unit (NTU), reduced polysaccharides by 25.4%–29.9%, but rejected few proteins. Both polysaccharides and inorganic particles were detected on the fouled membranes, but inorganic particles could be effectively removed by backwashing. The increase of turbidity in the sand filter effluent to 3.05 NTU did not significantly increase the fouling rate, but an increase in the turbidity in the BAC effluent to 6.11 NTU increased the fouling rate by more than 100%. The results demonstrated that the polysaccharide, not the protein, constituents of biopolymers were responsible for membrane fouling. Membrane fouling was closely associated with a small fraction of polysaccharides in the feed water. Inorganic particles exacerbated membrane fouling only when the concentration of fouling–inducing polysaccharides in the feed water was relatively high. The combined fouling was largely reversible, and polysaccharides were the predominant substances responsible for irreversible fouling.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to investigate the feasibility and fouling mitigation mechanisms of UV/Fe(II) synergistically activated sulfite (S(IV)) (UFS) pretreatment to alleviate membrane fouling caused by HA-enhanced Ca2+ scaling. After UFS treatment, hydrophobic substances and carboxyl groups structure were destroyed by the in-situ-generated SO•–4, resulted in a significant reduction of hydrophobic substances ratio and carboxyl group concentration. Due to the formation of more electropositive in-situ-generated Fe(III), the complexation between Ca2+ and carboxyl groups was weakened so that the bulk crystallization size on the membrane surface was greatly reduced. The filter cake enhanced osmotic pressure effect (CEOP) and concentration polarization effect were hence alleviated, as well as the surface roughness. At the microcosmic perspective, as the energy barrier between the membrane and foulants was increased significantly after pretreatment, the anti-foulants adsorption ability of the membrane was enhanced. Correlation analysis showed that the carboxyl concentration and density, HPO ratio, larger particle size (>100 nm) ratio, the Ca2+ concentration in the scaling layer and energy barrier all had a good correlation with the membrane resistance. This research not only provides an advanced oxidation technology that can effectively alleviate the synergistically-fouling effect of HA and Ca2+ of nanofiltration process, but also proposes a guidance for the UV/Fe(II) synergistically activated sulfite.

Pre-deposition Layers for Alleviating Ultrafiltration Membrane Fouling by Organic Matter: Role of Hexagonally and Cubically Ordered Mesoporous Carbons

Abstract:In this study, ordered mesoporous carbons (OMCs), i.e., CMK-3 and CMK-8 were pre-deposited on ultrafiltration membrane surface to alleviate membrane fouling by organic matter in the water. CMK-3 shows a typical 2D hexagonal symmetrical structure with long straight parallel channels, while CMK-8 exhibits a 3D porous structure with cubic channels. The pre-deposited CMK-3/CMK-8 layers exhibited significantly superior performance for both flux enhancement and fouling mitigation, whereas powdered activated carbon (PAC) showed limited influence. The fouling mechanism was apparently altered by the OMCs pre-deposition layers, and pore blocking always dominated throughout the filtration process without the formation of cake filtration. In comparison with PAC, CMK-3 and CMK-8 were more effective for the rejection of tryptophan-like protein substances, which were the major foulants causing membrane fouling. The effects of pollutant fraction and deposited amount (i.e., 6, 12, 25 and 50 g/m(2)) were systematically explored, and the results indicated that this technology was more efficient for alleviating the fouling induced by humic acid and bovine serum albumin, whereas ineffective for sodium alginate fouling, and the optimal deposited amount varied with the pollutant fraction. CMK-3 exhibited significantly superior performance than CMK-8, likely due to its long straight parallel channels with lower internal resistance for pollutants adsorption. Both adsorption and size exclusion of the pre-deposited layers contributed to fouling mitigation. These results demonstrate that pre-depositing with OMCs as alternatives to conventional PAC shows promising potential for mitigating membrane fouling in water treatment.
Efficient removal of perfluorinated compounds with the polyamide nanofiltration membrane and membrane fouling resistance analysis

Abstract:Abstract Perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) are significant pollutants known for their high toxicity and resistance to natural degradation, posing a severe threat to both the global environment and human health. In this study, a polyamide (PA) membrane with an intermediate layer structure of MXene-TiO2 (referred to as MXT-NFM) was utilized for the removal of PFCs. Experimental results confirm that MXT-NFM exhibited remarkable capacity in intercepting PFCs, accompanied by the high water flux. To gain insights into the mechanisms governing membrane fouling induced by PFCs, inorganic ions, and organics, a series of fouling tests were conducted using MXT-NFM under diverse conditions. Additionally, the XDLVO theory was employed to provide a theoretical perspective on the interactions occurring during the fouling process. The findings suggest that the MXene-TiO2 intermediate layer contributed to the exceptional hydrophilicity and rough surface properties, enabling multiple functionalities. These include alleviating membrane pore plugging, improving the physical configuration of the PA layer, and effectively mitigating fouling phenomena in coexisting systems during practical applications. Moreover, the particle size of pollutant colloids and the acid–base interaction were identified as decisive factors influencing the development of membrane fouling.

Abstract:This study provides insight into the combined effect of membrane and foulant hydrophobicity and surface charge on adsorptive fouling during microfiltration. A series of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes were used with dextran (DEX), bovine serum albumin (BSA) and Aldrich humic acid (HA) employed as model foulants representative of polysaccharides, proteins and humic substances, respectively. Hydrophobicity and surface charge of the fouling participants (i.e. membranes and foulants) were indicated by water contact angle (θ) and zeta potential (ζ), respectively. The water contact angles of the foulants were measured at a buffered pH, with the contact angle disturbance induced by the buffer salt (sodium bicarbonate) eliminated via an extrapolation method. The steric properties of fouling participants were carefully examined ensuring that the inter-membrane or inter-foulant steric disparity as well as the membrane–foulant size exclusion effect was reduced to an acceptable level for insight into the hydrophobic and electrostatic effects. The extent of adsorptive fouling between each membrane–foulant pair was parameterized as adsorption equilibrium constant (K(0)), which was determined using Thomas’ dynamic adsorption model. To interpret the combined effect of hydrophobicity and surface charge of membrane (m) and foulant (f) on adsorptive fouling, a semi-empirical model, derived from the extended Derjaguin–Landau–Verwey–Overbeek (XDLVO) theory, of the form: lnK(0)/Sc=−0.143×(cosθm+cosθf)−4.20×10−5×ζmζf+0.357 (where Sc in nm2 is the contactable area between membrane and a foulant molecule, and zeta potentials are given in mV) was found to adequately describe the results obtained. Statistical analysis of the results indicates that the contact angle term contributes significantly to this relationship while zeta potential term exhibits marginal impact. This suggests that hydrophobic interaction, rather than electrostatic interaction, may be the predominant mechanism affecting adsorptive fouling.
Effects of coexisted substances on the separation characteristics and mechanisms of perfluorooctanoic acid by polyamide composite nanofiltration membrane

Abstract:Worldwide widely distributed perfluorooctanoic acid generally coexists with Ca 2+ /Mg 2+ and natural organics in natural water bodies. However, there is no systematic study reported on the retention behavior of perfluorooctanoic acid in the presence of Ca 2+ /Mg 2+ and typical dissolved organics during nanofiltration. Herein, the influences of Ca 2+ /Mg 2+ and/or humic acid/sodium alginate on perfluorooctanoic acid removal by nanofiltration were investigated, respectively. The dominant rejection mechanism of perfluorooctanoic acid was further revealed by combining the surface morphology and charge characteristics of the virgin and fouled membranes. Result showed that, under 0.6 MPa, perfluorooctanoic acid rejection obviously increased when the concentration of Ca 2+ /Mg 2+ increased from 0 to 2 mM in feedwater. This improvement was attributed to the complexing and bridging of Ca 2+ /Mg 2+ with perfluorooctanoic acid which could increase the size exclusion effect. When humic acid/sodium alginate coexisted with perfluorooctanoic acid, perfluorooctanoic acid rejection increased distinctly because the adsorption of humic acid/sodium alginate on nanofiltration membrane surface enhanced the sieving and electrostatic repulsion effects of nanofiltration membrane to perfluorooctanoic acid. Additionally, when Ca 2+ /Mg 2+ and humic acid/sodium alginate coexisted with perfluorooctanoic acid in feedwater, perfluorooctanoic acid rejection was the highest in all feed conditions because Ca 2+ /Mg 2+ could neutralizing charge, compressing double electric layer, and complexating and bridging with humic acid/sodium alginate as well as nanofiltration membrane. At this time, the foulant cake layer acted as an extra rejection layer, and sieving effect was the main rejection mechanism of perfluorooctanoic acid by nanofiltration membrane.

Abstract:Ultrafiltration is widely employed in treating high-salinity organic wastewater for the purpose of retaining particulates, microbes and macromolecules etc. In general, high-salinity wastewater contains diverse types of saline ions at fairly high concentration, which may significantly change foulant properties and subsequent fouling propensity during ultrafiltration. This study filled a knowledge gap by investigating polysaccharide fouling formation affected by various high saline environments, where 2 mol/L Na+ and 0.5–1.0 mol/L Ca2+/Al3+ were employed and the synergistic influences of Na+-Ca2+ and Na+-Al3+ were further unveiled. The results demonstrated that the synergistic influence of Na+-Ca2+ strikingly enlarged the alginate size due to the bridging effects of Ca2+ via binding with carboxyl groups in alginate chains. As compared with pure alginate, the involvement of Na+ aggravated alginate fouling formation, while the subsequent addition of Ca2+ or Al3+ on the basis of Na+ mitigated fouling development. The coexistence of Na+-Ca2+ led to alginate fouling formed mostly in a loose and reversible pattern, accompanied by significant cracks appearing on the cake layer. In contrast, the fouling layer formed by alginate-Na+-Al3+ seemed to be much denser, leading to severer irreversible fouling formation. Notably, the membrane rejection under various high salinity conditions was seriously weakened. Consequently, the current study offered in-depth insights into the development of polysaccharide-associated fouling during ultrafiltration of high-salinity organic wastewater.
