Abstract:As the country with the largest anthropogenic CO2 emission, China is greatly influential on fighting with climate change. However, CO2 emitted from on-road vehicles in China is a barrier to its carbon neutral due to the inevitable increase trend of vehicle quantity. Thus, to meet the requirement of refined policy-making for vehicular CO2 abatement, we calculated the CO2 emissions from 37 vehicular types and 3 fuel categories across 339 cities in China through the bottom-up method, and developed a national vehicular CO2 emission inventory in a high spatial resolution (1 km x 1 km). Additionally, machine learnings were conducted to the inventory for the emission pattern identification. It was found that the total vehicular CO2 emission in 2019 was 1090 million tons, and 77.1% of CO2 was emitted by vehicles of light-duty gasoline vehicle (LDGV) and heavy-duty diesel truck (HDDT). In addition, for the grids accompanying CO2 emissions, 75% of vehicular CO2 emissions were contributed by 15% of grids (hot grids). Furthermore, results of machine learning showed that LDGVs mainly distributed in economically advanced regions of which vehicular structures were relatively simple, while HDDTs were widely applied on the national scale. Based on the results above, two measures were proposed: (1) Electric cars have to be strongly promoted in hot grids for the LDGV replacement. (2) Long-distance freight tool replacements are urgently required in the national wide. Our study provided a studying base for further investigations on decarbonization and a new insight of China's vehicular CO2 emission controls.
Drivers in carbon dioxide, air pollutants emissions and health benefits of China's clean vehicle fleet 2019-2035

Abstract:Clean vehicle fleet will greatly benefit air quality and climate change mitigation. Here, we employ an integrated model to systematically investigated the contribution of combined clean vehicle policies to "emissions, exposure, and health benefits" from a regional perspective 2019-2035 in China. We find that driven by clean vehicle polices, the national vehicle CO2 will likely to peak around 2028 with about 1327 million tons, and then reduce by 7.8% from 2028 to 2035. The developed region will peak CO2 before 2030, while the developing region probably peak after 2030. In general, most air pollutants emissions from vehicles will decrease, subsequently leading to obvious PM2.5 and O3 exposure decrease. About 68 thousand PM2.5 related and 33 thousand O3 related deaths will be avoided 2019-2035 nationwide. Note that the health benefits are unequal, with higher PM2.5-O3 related excess deaths be avoided per 100000 in developed region than developing region. Besides, results show that emission standard upgrade contributes largest to emission reduction and related health benefits, followed by electric vehicles, road-to-railways and waterways, and fuel consumption regulation in general. This work is able to provide valuable information for policy makers to collaboratively reduce CO2, air pollutants and premature deaths in China and other developing countries.
Recent Development of a Refined Multiple Air Pollutant Emission Inventory of Vehicles in the Central Plains of China

Abstract:Central Plains region of China, represented by Henan Province, is facing serious air pollution problems. Vehicular exhaust emissions had adverse impacts on the atmospheric environment. The first comprehensive and novel vehicle emission inventory for Henan Province using vehicle kilometers traveled, localized emission factors, and activity data at city-level was developed. Furthermore, 3 km × 3 km gridded emission and temporal variations were determined by using localized information. Results show that the total emissions of sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO), particular matter with aerodynamic diameter < 10 μm (PM10), aerodynamic diameter < 2.5 μm (PM2.5), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), VOCs-evaporation and ammonia in 2015 were 9.1, 533.4, 1190.7, 23.7, 21.6, 150.8, 31.5 and 10.4 Gg, respectively, and the emission intensities of the above pollutants were 0.05, 2.7, 6.0, 0.1, 0.1, 0.8, 0.2 and 0.05 g/km, respectively. Vehicles meeting the Primary China 1, China 3 and China 4 contributed 89.1%, 82.7%, 75.3%, 75.5%, 75.5%, 68.2%, 68.4% and 82.3% for SO2, NOx, CO, PM10, PM2.5, VOCs, VOCs-evaporation and ammonia emissions, respectively. Zhengzhou, Zhoukou, Nanyang, Luoyang, Shangqiu and Xinyang showed relatively higher emissions and contributed more than 50% of each pollutant. The spatial distribution indicated obvious characteristics of the road network, and high-level emission was concentrated in the downtown areas. Additionally, the ozone formation potential (OFP) based on the estimated speciated VOC emissions was 569.6 Gg in Henan Province. Aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons were the main species of VOCs, whereas olefins contributed the largest proportion of OFP, with 42.2%.

The new methodology overcomes the common shortcomings of previous inventory methods, including neglecting the geographical differences between key parameters and using surrogates that are weakly related to vehicle activities to allocate vehicle emissions. The new method has great advantages over previous methods in depicting the spatial distribution characteristics of vehicle activities and emissions. This work provides a better understanding of the spatial representation of vehicle emissions in China and can benefit both air quality modeling and management with improved spatial accuracy.

Abstract:One comprehensive emission inventory of CO, HC, NOX, PM10, PM2.5, BC, CH4, CO2 and N2O with high spatial reso-lution (0.01 degrees x 0.01 degrees) for 58 cities in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei and its surrounding areas (BTHSA) during 2000-2020 are developed by using COPERT model and ArcGIS methodology. The results show that vehicular emissions of CO, HC, NOX, PM10, PM2.5, BC and CH4 have begun to decrease or slow their growth rates in recent years due to the imple-mentation of measures to control vehicular emissions. However, vehicular emissions of CO2 increase rapidly due to lit-tle fuel economy improvement. Besides, the usage of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems by heavy duty truck (HDT) is the main factor impacting the growth trend of vehicular N2O emissions since 2017. By 2020, vehicular emis-sions of CO, HC, NOX, PM10, PM2.5, BC, CO2, CH4 and N2O are estimated at about 1.65 Mt, 0.35 Mt, 1.39 Mt, 87.44 kt, 55.06 kt, 15.57 kt, 527.71 Mt, 36.20 kt and 8.56 kt, respectively. Therein, China III, IV, IV and IV passenger cars (PCs) are the predominated models for vehicular emissions of CO, HC, CH4 and CO2, accounting for 19.59-28.26 % of the total vehicular emission of corresponding pollutant. Nevertheless, the major contributors of vehicular emissions of NOX, PM10, PM2.5, BC and N2O are China III (29.64 %), III (18.03 %), III (22.81 %), III (42.16 %) and V (22.28 %) HDTs, respectively. The gridded vehicular emissions vary significantly, with emissions of CO, HC, CH4 and CO2 being mainly concentrated in central urban areas of cities (e.g., Beijing, Tangshan, Zhengzhou, Tianjin, Qingdao, Jinan). Nevertheless, the grids with high vehicular emissions of NOX, PM10, PM2.5, BC and N2O are mainly distributed along the expressway and the suburban roads of cities (e.g., Linyi, Tangshan, Jining, Weifang, Shijiazhuang, Tianjin, Baoding). Finally, multi-year uncertainties of vehicular emission inventory are discussed.

Abstract:Co-controlling the emissions of air pollutants and CO2 from automobiles is crucial for addressing the intertwined challenges of air pollution and climate change in China. Here, we analyze the synergetic characteristics of air pollutant and CO2 emissions from China's on-road transportation and identify the co-drivers influencing these trends. Using detailed emission inventories and employing index decomposition analysis, we found that despite notable progress in pollution control, minimizing on-road CO2 emissions remains a formidable task. Over 2010-2020, the estimated sectoral emissions of VOCs, NOx, PM2.5, and CO declined by 49.9%, 25.9%, 75.2%, and 63.5%, respectively, while CO2 emissions increased by 46.1%. Light-duty passenger vehicles and heavy-duty trucks have been identified as the primary contributors to carbon-pollution co-emissions, highlighting the need for tailored policies. The driver analysis indicates that socioeconomic changes are primary drivers of emission growth, while policy controls, particularly advances in emission efficiency, can facilitate co-reductions. Regional disparities emphasize the need for policy refinement, including reducing dependency on fuel vehicles in the passenger subsector and prioritizing co-reduction strategies in high-emission provinces in the freight subsector. Overall, our study confirms the effectiveness of China's on-road control policies and provides valuable insights for future policy makers in China and other similarly positioned developing countries.

Abstract:The sustained growth in on-road transportation demand poses an increasing challenge for countries in mitigating air pollution and addressing climate change. Revealing how varying socioeconomic and policy factors have contributed to synergies or trade-offs between CO2 and air pollution emissions is crucial for effectively co-controlling carbon-pollution emissions. Here, based on detailed air pollution and CO2 emission inventories from China’s on-road transportation over 2010-2020 and the Logarithmic Mean Divisia index (LMDI) analysis, we explore the on-road synergetic evolution trends among pollution and CO2 emissions and identify the co-drivers influencing carbon-pollution co-emissions. We find that the estimated sectoral emissions of VOCs, NOx, PM2.5, and CO declined by 49.9%, 25.9%, 75.2%, and 63.5%, respectively, while CO2 emissions increased by 46.1% in China over 2010-2020. The vehicle-type-specific analysis further highlights the crucial role of light-duty passenger vehicles and heavy-duty trucks in simultaneously improving air quality and mitigating CO2 emissions, given their synergies in emission growth of VOCs-CO2 and NOx-CO2, respectively. The driver analysis indicates that socioeconomic growth and rising transportation demand are major co-drivers of carbon-pollution emission growth, while the implementation of control policies, particularly advances in emission efficiency, can facilitate co-reductions. Specifically, in the passenger subsector, advances in emission efficiency and changes in travel behavior are identified as the most efficient co-drivers for synergistic emission reduction. The gradual proliferation of new energy vehicles also provides additional synergistic reductions. In the freight subsector, improved freight economic efficiency and optimized freight transport structure are identified as other two co-drivers of synergistic emission reduction. Regional disparities further emphasize the need for policy refinement, including reducing dependency on fuel vehicles in the passenger subsector and prioritizing co-reduction strategies in high-emission provinces in the freight subsector. Overall, our study confirms the effectiveness of China’s on-road control policies and provides valuable insights for future policy makers in China and other similarly positioned developing countries seeking to reduce CO2 and air pollutant emissions simultaneously.

Abstract:The Central China represented by Henan Province is one of the most haze-polluted regions in China with high levels of black carbon (BC) and organic carbon (OC) emissions. In this study, a 2016-based BC and OC emission inventory of Henan Province was developed based on detailed activity data and latest emission factors from different sources involving particulate matter. The total annual emissions of BC and OC were estimated to be 117.6 kt and 162.8 kt, respectively. Industrial process (44.2%) and industrial combustion (17.0%) were the top two contributors for BC emission, whereas OC emission was mainly from biomass burning (36.8%). Typical industrial cities were the major contributors to BC emission, by contrast, relatively higher OC emission was concentrated on agricultural cities in the southeast of Henan Province. The OC/BC ratios of industrial cities were generally lower than those of southeastern agricultural cities. The monthly variations presented that the highest BC and OC emissions were concentrated in January and June, respectively. Overall, in this study, the quantitative uncertainty ranges on the 95% confidence interval were approximately -30%-47% for BC and -38%-65% for OC. The emission inventory was also verified by qualitative comparison with other studies and indirect evaluation of OCpri/EC ratios, and the result was within a reasonable range. The ways of discussion and evaluation in this study can provide reference for other regions.
Analysis of vehicular CO2 emission in the Central Plains of China and its driving forces

Abstract:The Central Plains of China, represented by Henan province, faces a dramatic rise in vehicular stock and CO2 emissions. The refined-resolution(1 km × 1 km) vehicular CO2 emission inventory for Henan province was developed to identify emission patterns. Results show that CO2 emissions in Henan province reached 77.04 Mt in 2019, and LDGV and HDDT were the major sources that emitted 42.34% and 35.96% of CO2 emissions, respectively. Based on gridded emission, Moran's Index was used to identify spatial distribution patterns of vehicular CO2. The higher CO2 emission intensity areas were concentrated in the central and northern of the province and urban areas in each city, especially in Zhengzhou and its surrounding cities. Moreover, the analysis of the driving forces behind the differences in emissions among cities using the multi-regional (M-R) spatial decomposition model revealed that income and population-scale are significant impacts. In cities such as Zhengzhou, emissions may be dramatically increase owing to high economic growth expectations. 'Polarization phenomenon' of CO2 emission distribution should be vigilant. Findings provided insights for refined policy-making in Henan province to limit CO2 emission: (1) Take cities as transportation hubs, e.g., Zhengzhou and Shangqiu, and that in the traffic radiation circle, e.g., Jiaozuo and Zhoukou, as the critical areas for CO2 emission reduction; (2) Promote electric vehicles as replacement for traditional fuel vehicles; especially for cities with large passenger car emissions, such as Zhengzhou, and cities with large truck emissions, such as Shangqiu and Zhoukou; actively guide new consumer groups to choose EVs, especially in cities with high growth expectations such as Zhengzhou; (3) Rely on the advantages of transportation network to promote the 'road to railway' of bulk cargo transportation and mainly focus on highways with higher CO2 density, such as Beijing-Hong Kong&Macao Expressway, Shanghai-Xi'an Expressway, Da Guang Expressway, and Lian Huo Expressway.

Abstract:Many stakeholders recognize that the transport sector should be a major focus for reducing the emissions of carbon and air pollutants since it is the third largest sector for energy consumption in China. This study analyzed and projected the energy consumption and emissions of CO2 and conventional air pollutants (CO, NOX, SO2, and PM2.5) from four transport sectors (highway, waterway, railway and aviation) based on the LEAP model, compared the emission reduction potentials of different transport sectors under different scenarios in 2020-2060, and finally explored the co-reduction effect for CO2 and the four pollutants under different control measures. The results showed that the CO2 emissions from the transportation sectors in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) region would increase greatly under the baseline scenario. Estimates indicate that the CO2 emissions of Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei Province would increase by 263.72%, 225.87% and 405.43% in 2060, respectively. Under the comprehensive policy scenario, the emission reductions would be 88.78%, 76.86% and 83.20% respectively, and the maximum emission reduction rate of pollutants is expected to reach 78.73%99.34%. The sectors with major reduction potentials for CO2 and conventional pollutants are the aviation and road transport sectors, which contribute 38.19%99.85% of the total, respectively. The co-reduction achieved by optimizing the energy structure in the road transport and aviation sectors would be the best. The results of this study can provide a basis for the formulation of low-carbon reduction strategies for the transport sectors in the BTH region.

Abstract:Vehicle emissions in China have been decoupled from rapid motorization owing to comprehensive control strategies. China's increasingly ambitious goals for better air quality are calling for deep emission mitigation, posing a need to develop an up-to-date emission inventory that can reflect the fast-developing policies on vehicle emission control. Herein, large-sample vehicle emission measurements were collected to update the vehicle emission inventory. For instance, ambient temperature correction modules were developed to depict the remarkable regional and seasonal emission variations, showing that the monthly emission disparities for total hydrocarbon (THC) and nitrogen oxide (NOX) in January and July could be up to 1.7 times in northern China. Thus, the emission ratios of THC and NOX can vary dramatically among various seasons and provinces, which have not been considered well by previous simulations regarding the nonlinear atmospheric chemistry of ozone (O3) and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) formation. The new emission results indicate that vehicular carbon monoxide (CO), THC, and PM2.5 emissions decreased by 69, 51, and 61%, respectively, during 2010-2019. However, the controls of NOX and ammonia (NH3) emissions were not as efficient as other pollutants. Under the most likely future scenario (PC [1]), CO, THC, NOX, PM2.5, and NH3 emissions were anticipated to reduce by 35, 36, 35, 45, and 4%, respectively, from 2019 to 2025. These reductions will be expedited with expected decreases of 56, 58, 74, 53, and 51% from 2025 to 2035, which are substantially promoted by the massive deployment of new energy vehicles and more stringent emission standards. The updated vehicle emission inventory can serve as an important tool to develop season- and location-specific mitigation strategies of vehicular emission precursors to alleviate haze and O3 problems.
High-resolution Vehicle Emission Inventory and Emission Control Policy Scenario Analysis, a Case in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) Region, China

Abstract:Urban air pollution has become a major concern in China. In the heavily populated and developed Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) region, vehicle emissions are major pollution contributors. This paper aims to establish 2014 vehicle emission inventories for five major air pollutants in the BTH region: CO, HC, NOx, PM10 and PM2.5 and carry out an emission control policy scenario analysis based on the newly developed inventories. Results showed that total emissions of CO, HC, NOx, PM10 and PM2.5 from vehicles in the BTH region were 1622.4 kt, 187.5 kt, 544.7 kt, 23.5 kt, and 26.1 kt, respectively. Based on the emission inventory, high-resolution emission distribution maps of the study area were created at a scale of 1 km x 1 km by incorporating local traffic flow data. The CO, HC and NOx emission levels were higher in the southeast, while the PM10 and PM2.5 levels were relatively evenly distributed throughout the BTH region. Based on the emission inventories, four policy scenarios were set to simulate the emission changes, and results showed that eliminating old vehicles and upgrading oil quality could reduce emission efficiently. A policy of eliminating old vehicles was selected to calculate the economic cost. Results showed that the emission reduction efficiencies of unit cost decreased from Hebei, Tianjin to Beijing. Scenarios for Vehicular Air Pollutant Emissions Abatement: a Case Study in Hangzhou, China

Abstract:Motor vehicles are the major source of urban air pollution. The abatement of air pollutant emissions is an urgent task for environmental protection. This paper simulated the abatement for carbon monoxide (CO), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), nitrogen oxides (NO x ), and particular matter (PM) emissions from vehicles under four scenarios in the year 2015 in Hangzhou, China. It was found that the emissions of CO, VOCs, NO x , and PM from vehicles were 440.551, 23.079, 44.255, and 6.532 kt/a in 2010 in Hangzhou, respectively. The vehicle population will increase to over 1.2 million with a 60.7% growth rate until 2015 (estimated). Based on the scenario analysis, it was found that eliminating substandard vehicles and upgrading vehicle’s standards could help reduce CO and VOCs effectively, while the expected abatement of NO x and PM would be offset by the rapid increase in the vehicle numbers. It was also found that integrated measurements, including eliminating substandard vehicles, upgrading vehicle standards, supplying low sulfur oil, and introducing alternative fuel vehicles could simultaneously reduce the four key pollutants. These integrated policies make it possible to reduce 250.197, 10.270, 1.791, and 0.335 kt/a CO, VOCs, NO x , and PM with 56.79%, 44.50%, 4.05%, and 5.14% decrease rates in 2015, respectively, when compared to those in 2010.
Vehicle emission prediction in different energy scenarios from 2005 to 2030

Abstract:This research estimates emission inventories of CO 2, CO, HC, NO x and PM 10 emitted by motor vehicles from 2005 to 2030 in Hangzhou under three different scenarios of energy consumption and pollution restriction. Long Range Energy Alternatives Planning (LEAP) model is adopted to forecast the total stocks of motor vehicles, passenger vehicles, trucks and motor cycles. Based on the stocks of all different vehicles, their average fuel consumptions and dynamic emission factors, total fuel consumption and emission inventories are evaluated. Prediction results show that, compared to BAU (Business As Usual) scenario, about 0.63 and 1.22 million tons of oil will be saved in 2030 in AFC (Average Fuel Consumption) and AER (Alternative Energy Replacement) scenarios respectively. Meanwhile, the emission of CO 2, CO, HC, NO x and PM 10 may decrease by 19.6%, 28.2%, 23.8%, 25.3% and 27.2% in AFC and 40.3%, 40.4%, 63.5%, 55.8% and 48.6% in AER in 2030 respectively.

Abstract:A high–resolution emission inventory of primary air pollutants of 18 cities in Henan region, as the representative of central plains of China, was developed based on the combination of bottom–up and top-down methods. It was found that the emissions of sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO), particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of 10 mm or less (PM10), particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of 2.5 mm or less (PM2.5), Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) and ammonia (NH3) in 2016 were 780.4, 1682.9, 7152.8, 1440.3, 757.2, 1110.7, and 982.0 Gg, respectively. The emissions of the three major PM2.5 species, namely, Organic carbon (OC), Elemental carbon (EC), and sulfate (<math>SO42−</math>), were 161.2, 83.1, and 64.6 Gg, respectively. Stationary combustion was the largest contributor to SO2, NOx, CO, and PM2.5 emissions with 71.6%, 49.0%, 34.1%, and 24.7% contributions, respectively. Dust was the dominant source of PM10 emissions (42.4%), whereas industrial process was the largest contributor to VOCs emission (34.8%). Agricultural source contributed 87.7% of NH3 emission. The emissions were mainly distributed over the northwest and central part of Henan, and cities of Anyang, Zhengzhou, Luoyang, Pingdingshan, and Jiaozuo were the major contributors. Large NH3 emissions occurred during May to September, and high emissions of other pollutants were found from October to January. According to the Gini coefficients of per capital Gross Domestic Product(GDP) distribution among multiple air pollutants, the SO2 and NH3 emissions had high regional disparity, and the cities of Anyang and Zhengzhou had a high economic–environment inequity. Furthermore, this results were evaluated by comparing with other studies and the trend of spatiotemporal observed ambient concentration, which proves that the results are reliable. This work may benefit the government to further understand current local emission characteristics and formulation of targeted air pollution control measures.

Abstract:The annual growth rate of CO2 emissions from China's transportation sector exceeded the growth rate of emissions from the whole society, making transportation the third-largest CO2 emissions sector after the industrial and household consumption sectors in China. This paper is intended to project CO2 emissions in China's transportation sector from 2010 to 2020 and to assess the effectiveness of possible reduction measures. A detailed bottom-up model has been developed and four scenarios have been designed to describe the future development of the sector. The results indicate that under the business as usual (BAU) scenario, emissions would increase by 58%, reaching 1.38 billion tCO(2) by 2020. Reduction potentials ranged from 96 to 515 million tCO(2) under different scenarios. Road transportation alone accounted for more than 80% of total emissions on average, making it a key target for CO2 mitigation actions. Application of conventional transportation technology, together with accelerating the development of new-energy technologies, was the most effective and contributed to more than 70% of reductions. These measures combined with traffic mode shifts in consumption patterns will lead to the sustainable and effective development of China's transportation sector.
