Abstract:Spontaneous imbibition plays an important role in many subsurface and industrial applications. Unveiling pore-scale wetting dynamics, and particularly its upscaling to the Darcy model, are still unresolved. We conduct image-based pore-network modeling of cocurrent spontaneous imbibition and the corresponding quasi-static imbibition in homogeneous sintered glass beads and heterogeneous Estaillades carbonate. We find that pore-scale heterogeneity significantly influences entrapment of the nonwetting fluid, which in Estaillades is mainly because of the poor connectivity of pores. We show that wetting dynamics significantly deviates capillary pressure and relative permeability away from their quasi-static counterparts. Moreover, we propose a non-equilibrium model for wetting permeability that well incorporates flow dynamics. We implement the non-equilibrium model into two-phase Darcy modeling of a 10 cm long medium. Sharp wetting fronts are numerically predicted, which are in good agreement with experimental observations. Our studies provide insights into developing a two-phase imbibition model with measurable material properties.

Capillary rise dynamics of liquid hydrocarbons in mesoporous silica as explored by gravimetry, optical and neutron imaging: Nano-rheology and determination of pore size distributions from the shape of imbibition fronts

Abstract:We present gravimetrical, optical, and neutron imaging measurements of the capillarity-driven infiltration of mesoporous silica glass by hydrocarbons. Square-root-of-time Lucas-Washburn invasion kinetics are found for linear alkanes from n-decane (C10) to n-hexacontane (C60) and for squalane, a branched alkane, in porous Vycor with 6.5 nm or 10 nm pore diameter, respectively. Humidity-dependent experiments allow us to study the influence on the imbibition kinetics of water layers adsorbed on the pore walls. Except for the longest molecule studied, C60, the invasion kinetics can be described by bulk fluidity and bulk capillarity, provided we assume a sticking, pore-wall adsorbed boundary layer, i.e. a monolayer of water covered by a monolayer of flat-laying hydrocarbons. For C60, however, an enhanced imbibition speed compared to the value expected in the bulk is found. This suggests the onset of velocity slippage at the silica walls or a reduced shear viscosity due to the transition towards a polymer-like flow in confined geometries. Both, light scattering and neutron imaging indicate a pronounced roughening of the imbibition fronts. Their overall shape and width can be resolved by neutron imaging. The fronts can be described by a superposition of independent wetting fronts moving with pore size-dependent square-root-of-time laws and weighted according to the pore size distributions obtained from nitrogen gas sorption isotherms. This finding indicates that the shape of the imbibition front in a porous medium, such as Vycor glass, with interconnected, elongated pores, is solely determined by independent movements of liquid menisci. These are dictated by the Laplace pressure and hydraulic permeability variations and thus the pore size variation at the invasion front. Our results suggest that pore size distributions can be derived from the broadening of imbibition fronts.

Abstract:We report on the capillary rise of water in three-dimensional networks of hydrophilic silica pores with 3.5nm and 5nm mean radii, respectively (porous Vycor monoliths). We find classical square root of time Lucas-Washburn laws for the imbibition dynamics over the entire capillary rise times of up to 16h investigated. Provided we assume two preadsorbed strongly bound layers of water molecules resting at the silica walls, which corresponds to a negative velocity slip length of -0.5nm for water flow in silica nanopores, we can describe the filling process by a retained fluidity and capillarity of water in the pore center. This anticipated partitioning in two dynamic components reflects the structural-thermodynamic partitioning in strongly silica bound water layers and capillary condensed water in the pore center which is documented by sorption isotherm measurements.

Abstract:Capillary flow has been extensively studied due to its broad applications in both engineering and sciences. Detailed studies have shown that capillary rise in hydrophilic microchannels obeys the Lacus-Washburn law, which illustrates a square-root relationship between the imbibition height and the time. The imbibition kinetics depends on the medium structures, liquid viscosity as well as the wetting behavior. These properties are hardly tunable for common porous materials such as rock and paper so as to achieve active control on the imbibition process. In this work, we investigate controllable capillary rise in novel conductive nanoporous materials, i.e., nanoporous gold (NPG) and carbon nanotube (CNT) sponges, by employing the electrocapillary technique to manipulate the wetting property of water on the material surface. Reversible on-off switchable control on the capillary flow in both materials is realized using ultra-low electric voltages. In comparison with NPG, more pronounced flow rate has been obtained in CNT sponges, and, moreover, direct oil recovery can also be realized with the assistance of water-soluble surfactant.

Abstract:Liquid flow propelled by capillary forces is one of the most important transport mechanisms in porous environments. It is governed by a fascinating interplay of interfacial, viscous drag as well as gravitational forces which liquids encounter upon invasion into geometries with often complex topologies, such as capillary networks of trees or interconnected fractures in soils and ice. Here, we present fundamentals, concepts and an experimental, gravimetric study on the capillarity-driven invasion dynamics of liquids in networks of pores a few nanometers across in monolithic, nanoporous silica glass (porous Vycor). A variation of the complexity of the building blocks of the liquids investigated along with a variation of the humidity and the temperature upon spontaneous imbibition allows us to gain information regarding the fluidity and capillarity of liquids in such nanoporous environments. We observe square-root of time imbibition dynamics for all liquids applied, which we can quantitatively describe by both a conserved bulk fluidity in the pore center and bulk capillarity at the advancing menisci, if we assume a sticky boundary layer (negative velocity slip length). Moreover, pecularities of nanopore-confined liquids, such as transport via the vapor phase leading to preadsorbed liquid layers, have to be properly accounted for. Upon increasing the chain-length in the case of the n-alkanes, we found hints towards a transition from stick- to slip-flow at the pore walls with increasing chain-length and thus polymeric behavior. Meniscus freezing is reported for n-tetracosane confined in porous Vycor. For the rheology of a rod-like liquid nematogen (8OCB) we found no hints of the viscosity drop upon entering into the nematic phase, typical of the bulk rheology of this liquid crystal.

Imbibition Triggered by Capillary Condensation in Nanopores

Abstract:We study the spatiotemporal dynamics of water uptake by capillary condensation from unsaturated vapor in mesoporous silicon layers (pore radius rp ≃ 2 nm), taking advantage of the local changes in optical reflectance as a function of water saturation. Our experiments elucidate two qualitatively different regimes as a function of the imposed external vapor pressure: at low vapor pressures, equilibration occurs via a diffusion-like process; at high vapor pressures, an imbibition-like wetting front results in fast equilibration toward a fully saturated sample. We show that the imbibition dynamics can be described by a modified Lucas-Washburn equation that takes into account the liquid stresses implied by Kelvin equation.

Abstract:The study of fluid absorption, particularly that of water, into nanoporous materials has garnered increasing attention in the last decades across a broad range of disciplines. However, most investigation approaches to probe such behaviors are limited by characterization conditions. In this study, a combined MRI and MAS NMR method was used to study a nanoporous silica glass to acquire information about its structural framework and interactions with confined water. Specifically, MRI was used for a quantitative analysis of water extent. While MAS NMR techniques provided structural information of silicate materials, including interactive surface area and framework packing. Analysis of water spin‐spin relaxation times (T2) suggested differences in water confinement within the characterized framework. Subsequent unsuccessful delivery of paramagnetic molecule into the pores enabled a quantitative assessment of the dimensions that "bottleneck" the pores. Finally, pore sizes were derived from the molecular size, density function theory (DFT) simulation and characterizations on standard samples. Our result matches with Brunauer‐Emmett‐Teller (BET) analysis.. The use of a paramagnetic probe for pore size determination introduces a new approach of characterization in the liquid phase, offering an alternative to the conventional BET analysis that uses gas molecule as probes.

In situ characterization of heterogeneous surface wetting in porous materials

Abstract:The performance of nano- and micro-porous materials in capturing and releasing fluids, such as during CO2 geo-storage and water/gas removal in fuel cells and electrolyzers, is determined by their wettability in contact with the solid. However, accurately characterizing wettability is challenging due to spatial variations in dynamic forces, chemical heterogeneity, and surface roughness. In situ measurements can potentially measure wettability locally as a contact angle - the angle a denser phase (e.g water) contacts solid in the presence of a second phase (e.g. hydrogen, air, CO2) - but suffer from difficulties in accurately capturing curvatures, contact areas, and contact loops of multiphase fluids. We introduce a novel extended topological method for in situ contact angle measurement and provide a comparative review of current geometric and topological methods, assessing their accuracy on ideal surfaces, porous rocks containing CO2, and water in gas diffusion layers. The new method demonstrates higher accuracy and reliability of in situ measurements for uniformly wetting systems compared to previous topological approaches, while geometric measurements perform best for mixed-wetting domains. This study further provides a comprehensive open-source platform for in situ characterization of wettability in porous materials with implications for gas geo-storage, fuel cells and electrolyzers, filtration, and catalysis.

Abstract:Liquids under confinement differ in behavior from their bulk counterparts and can acquire properties that are specific to the confined phase and linked to the nature and structure of the host matrix. While confined liquid water is not a new topic of research, the past few years have seen a series of intriguing novel features for water inside nanoscale pores. These unusual properties arise from the very specific nature of nanoporous materials: termed "soft porous crystals", they combine large-scale flexibility with a heterogeneous internal surface. This creates a rich diversity of behavior for the adsorbed water, and the combination of different experimental characterization techniques along with computational chemistry at various scales is necessary to understand the phenomena observed, and their microscopic origins. The range of systems of interest span the whole chemical range, from the inorganic (zeolites, imogolites) to the organic (microporous carbons, graphene and its derivatives) and even encompass the hybrid organic--inorganic systems (such as metal--organic frameworks).

Abstract:Wettability played an essential role in surface science, and the wettability of low surface tension working fluids has a significant impact on the heat transfer and flow performance of micro and nanoscale equipment. Constructing surface structures was a significant method for adjusting wettability. Molecular dynamics simulations were conducted to investigate the wetting behaviors of different low-surface tension working fluids on the nano-pillar substrates with different spacings. A revised formula was adopted to determine the wetting state of droplets at the nanoscale. Contact angles at the nanoscale were predicted with the thermodynamic model. The effects of surface tension, droplet size, and the spacing aspect ratio on the wetting behavior of nanodroplets were studied comparatively. The results indicated that the revised formula was more accurate than the direct measurement method in determining the wetting state at the nanoscale. The thermodynamic model provided excellent predictions on contact angles in the Cassie and Composite states. However, the results had a massive decline in the Wenzel state, which was caused by the potential field distribution. This study proposed a revised parameter to determine the wetting state of droplets in nanoscale wetting, which was conducive to analyzing the nanoscale wetting state.

Wetting and cavitation pathways on nanodecorated surfaces

Abstract:In this contribution we study wetting and nucleation of vapor bubbles on nanodecorated surfaces via free energy molecular dynamics simulations. The results shed light on the stability of superhydrophobicity in submerged surfaces with nanoscale corrugations. The re-entrant geometry of the cavities under investigation is capable of sustaining a confined vapor phase within the surface roughness (Cassie state) both for hydrophobic and hydrophilic combinations of liquid and solid. The atomistic system is of nanometric size; on this scale thermally activated events can play an important role ultimately determining the lifetime of the Cassie state. Such superhydrophobic state can break down by full wetting of the texture at large pressures (Cassie-Wenzel transition) or by nucleating a vapor bubble at negative pressures (cavitation). Specialized rare event techniques show that several pathways for wetting and cavitation are possible, due to the complex surface geometry. The related free energy barriers are of the order of 100 k_B T and vary with pressure. The atomistic results are found to be in semi-quantitative accord with macroscopic capillarity theory. However, the latter is not capable of capturing the density fluctuations, which determine the destabilization of the confined liquid phase at negative pressures (liquid spinodal).

Capillarity-Driven Oil Flow in Nanopores: Darcy Scale Analysis of Lucas-Washburn Imbibition Dynamics

Abstract:We present gravimetrical and optical imaging experiments on the capillarity-driven imbibition of silicone oils in monolithic silica glasses traversed by 3D networks of pores (mesoporous Vycor glass with 6.5 nm or 10 nm pore diameters). As evidenced by a robust square-root-of-time Lucas-Washburn (L-W) filling kinetics, the capillary rise is governed by a balance of capillarity and viscous drag forces in the absence of inertia and gravitational effects over the entire experimental times studied, ranging from a few seconds up to 10 days. A video on the infiltration process corroborates a collective pore filling as well as pronounced imbibition front broadening resulting from the capillarity and permeability disorder, typical of Vycor glasses. The transport process is analyzed within a Darcy scale description, considering a generalized pre-factor of the L-W law, termed Lucas-Washburn-Darcy imbibition ability. It assumes a Hagen-Poiseuille velocity profile in the pores and depends on the porosity, the mean pore diameter, the tortuosity and the velocity slip length and thus on the effective hydraulic pore diameter. For both matrices a reduced imbibition speed and thus reduced imbibition ability, compared to the one assuming the nominal pore diameter, bulk fluidity and bulk capillarity, can be quantitatively traced to an immobile, pore-wall adsorbed boundary layer of 1.4 nm thickness. Presumably, it consists of a monolayer of water molecules adsorbed on the hydrophilic pore walls covered by a monolayer of flat-laying silicone oil molecules. Our study highlights the importance of immobile nanoscopic boundary layers on the flow in tight oil reservoirs as well as the validity of the Darcy scale description for transport in mesoporous media.

Cassie–Wenzel wetting transition on nanostructured superhydrophobic surfaces induced by surface acoustic waves

Abstract:We report irreversible Cassie–Wenzel wetting transition on a nanostructured superhydrophobic surface employing surface acoustic wave (SAW) vibration. The transition is achieved upon penetration of the liquid into the nanogrooves driven by the inertial energy of the drop imparted by the SAW. However, the filling up of nanopores imposes an energy barrier (<math> E b</math>) to the transition, which requires the displacement of the initial solid–air interface inside the pores with a solid–liquid interface. We unravel that the relative magnitudes of the input acoustic energy (<math> E a c</math>), and this energy barrier, hence, dictate the occurrence of the wetting transition, with the irreversibility in the transition, therefore, being explained from energy minimization of the system following the transition. In addition, observing the dynamics of the wetting front allowed the different regimes of the wetting transition process to be identified.

Abstract:Hypothesis: Recently, the naoncapillary devices with the channel width about 2-3 water molecules have been fabricated. Water transport through these nanoslits showed unexpectedly fast flow, revealing the failure of Washburn's equation. Experiments: Liquid penetration into a nanocapillary made of two parallel walls is explored by many-body dissipative particle dynamics. Both partial wetting and total wetting walls are considered and the no-slip boundary condition is satisfied. Findings: The wicking velocity generally obeys Washburn's equation, but the dynamic contact angle (CA) has to be employed. The dynamic CA (θD) relies on the penetration rate and is always larger than the equilibrium CA. The breakdown of Washburn's equation occurs under two conditions, (i) the channel width close to molecular size and (ii) the positive spreading coefficient is large enough. Both cases come about when the wicking velocity in a nanoslit exceeds the maximum value corresponding to cos(θD) = 1. The failure of Washburn's equation is attributed to the invalidity of Young-Laplace equation associated with undefined meniscus. The extended meniscus will be developed as a wall of the nanoslit continues to extend outside the exit mouth. The shapes of extended menisci are discussed for both partial wetting and total wetting surfaces.

Abstract:Abstract Wetting of surfaces with porous coating is relevant for a wide variety of technical applications, such as printing technologies and heat transfer enhancement. Imbibition and evaporation of liquids on surfaces covered with porous layers are responsible for significant improvement of cooling efficiency during drop impact cooling and flow boiling on such surfaces. Up to now, no reliable model exists which is able to predict the kinetics of imbibition coupled with evaporation on surfaces with porous coatings. In this work, we consider one of possible mechanisms of imbibition on a substrate covered by a nanofiber mat. This is the capillary pressure-driven flow in a corner formed between a flat substrate and a fiber attached to it. The shape and the area of the cross-section occupied by the liquid as well as the capillary pressure change along the flow direction. A theoretical/numerical model of simultaneous imbibition and evaporation is developed, in which viscosity, surface tension and evaporation are taken into account. At the beginning of the process the imbibition length is proportional to the square root of time, in agreement with the Lucas-Washburn law. As the influence of evaporation becomes significant, the imbibition rate decreases. The model predictions are compared with experimental data for imbibition of water-ethanol mixtures into nanofiber mat coatings.

Abstract:Understanding drying processes in nanoporous media is of great importance in many technological and industrial situations. To better understand how gas moves through clayey rocks, of interest for underground disposal of radioactive wastes, we propose using pore-scale direct numerical simulations. In this study, we use the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics method, which has proved to be an effective approach for simulating complex fluid dynamics within porous media at the nanoscale. Our simulations consider capillary-dominated two-phase flow with evaporation and condensation at liquid–gas interfaces, coupled to the diffusion of water vapor in the gas phase, as well as the Kelvin effect, which is a specific feature of nanopores. Our evaporation-condensation model is validated against analytical solutions. The size of the compact support of kernel function and the particle density required to obtain accurate and stable results of capillary pressure are investigated. Drying regimes, capillary-driven and evaporated-driven, are explored. A specific effort is made to highlight the influence of the Kelvin effect on desaturation and the creation of preferential paths for gas flow as well as its impact on drying rate. The role of condensation due to local vapor concentration conditions is also emphasized.

Suspended Penetration Wetting State of Droplets on Microstructured Surfaces

Abstract:When a water droplet on a micropillar-structured hydrophobic surface is submitted to gradually increased pressure, the CassieBaxter wetting state transforms into the Wenzel wetting state once the pressure exceeds a critical value. It has been assumed that the reverse transition(Wenzel-to-Cassie-Baxter wetting state) cannot happen spontaneously after the pressure has been removed.In this paper, we report a new wetting-state transition. When external pressure is exerted on a droplet in the Cassie-Baxter wetting state on textured surfaces with high micropillars to trigger the breakdown of this wetting state, the droplet penetrates the micropillars but does not touch the base of the surface to trigger the occurrence of the Wenzel wetting state. We have named this state the suspended penetration wetting state. Spontaneous recovery from the suspended penetration wetting state to the initial Cassie-Baxter wetting state is achieved when the pressure is removed. Based on the experimental results, we built models to establish the penetration depth that the suspended penetration wetting state could achieve and to understand the energy barrier that influences the equilibrium position of the liquid surface. These results deepen our understanding of wetting states on rough surfaces subjected to external disturbances and shed new light on the design of superhydrophobic materials with a robust wetting stability.

Abstract:Fluid behaviour in nanoscale pores may significantly deviate from that in its bulk state, because pore-wall effects may have critical influences on fluid properties such that its behaviour becomes surface-controlled. Geologically, study of fluid flow with phase transition (condensation/evaporation) in nanoscale pores is of considerable significance in practice, as understandings of the relevant mechanisms may greatly help optimise operation conditions in field applications. Typical examples include geological disposal of contaminated wastes and recovery of resources from unconventional gas and oil reservoirs. In this text, we present a study to systematically investigate how the fluid behaviour, such as the liquid film formed on a pore-wall, the condensation/evaporation of the fluid and the evaporative flow profile in the pore, depends on the molecular/electrical surface forces and the pore-wall-curvature. Towards this we first formulated a set of extended phase equilibrium relationships following a rigorous thermodynamic procedure in which the relevant pore-wall effects are included. Then, a set of new evaporative flow equations was developed, which improves the original Mahadevan model by taking into account the pore-wall effects engaged. Several laboratory tests published in literature were employed to compare the present model with the Mahadevan model. With the results obtained we discussed the pertinent pore-wall effects on the evaporation behaviour of the water, and it was shown that for the evaporative flow process concerned, these effects are significantly important and considerable deviations would be generated without consideration of them.

Abstract:Molecular dynamics simulations were used to study pressure-controlled wetting behavior of a nanostructured surface. Model graphene-like material functionalized by nanosized asperities was shown to support reversible dynamic transitions between superhydrophobic Cassie states that minimize contact with water and completely wetted Wenzel states. In practical applications, similar reversibility has been achieved by hierarchical corrugations, air trapping, or tailored geometry of surface posts. Nano corrugations alone are shown to secure a robust Cassie state at low pressures, support transition to Wenzel state at pressure of O(102) atm and can recover the Cassie regime without prohibitive hysteresis upon decompression. For O(10) nm surface fragments, timescales of dynamic response to compression deduced from the relaxation rates of water uptake fluctuations were estimated in the range of 0.1–1 ns. On small surfaces, an essentially barrier-free transition to Wenzel state is typically initiated at surface edges, followed by cooperative spreading across the entire surface. Conversely, the recovery of the Cassie state, which involves mild hysteresis, relies on nucleation away from the edges and should therefore be essentially independent of surface size. In conventional picture, cycling rate is determined by the latter process. This suggests subnanosecond responses of surface wettability could also be realized on macroscopic samples, leaving pressure control as the practical rate determinant in eventual application.
Hydraulic Transport Across Hydrophilic and Hydrophobic Nanopores: Flow Experiments with Water and n-Hexane

Abstract:We experimentally explore pressure-driven flow of water and n-hexane across nanoporous silica (Vycor glass monoliths with 7 or 10 nm pore diameters, respectively) as a function of temperature and surface functionalization (native and silanized glass surfaces). Hydraulic flow rates are measured by applying hydrostatic pressures via inert gases (argon and helium, pressurized up to 70 bar) on the upstream side in a capacitor-based membrane permeability setup. For the native, hydrophilic silica walls, the measured hydraulic permeabilities can be quantitatively accounted for by bulk fluidity provided we assume a sticking boundary layer, i.e. a negative velocity slip length of molecular dimensions. The thickness of this boundary layer is discussed with regard to previous capillarity-driven flow experiments (spontaneous imbibition) and with regard to velocity slippage at the pore walls resulting from dissolved gas. Water flow across the silanized, hydrophobic nanopores is blocked up to a hydrostatic pressure of at least 70 bar. The absence of a sticking boundary layer quantitatively accounts for an enhanced n-hexane permeability in the hydrophobic compared to the hydrophilic nanopores.
