Abstract:Uniform temperature distribution within solid catalyst particles is important to achieving low coke formation in a high-temperature reaction. However, the issue of uneven temperature distribution exists in most fixed-bed catalytic reaction systems. Here, we developed a microwave-assisted system and used it in catalytic dehydration of glycerol for sustainable production of acrolein. A coated microwave absorbing catalyst WO3/ZrO2@SiC was prepared and employed in the catalytic reactions. The effects of reaction temperature, ZrO2/SiC ratio, and weight hourly space velocity (WHSV) on glycerol conversion and arcolein selectivity were examined. Experimental results showed that the microwave heating proved to be more effective than the conventional electric heating for glycerol dehydration to acrolein at lower temperature. The acrolein selectivity reached over 70% with complete glycerol conversion at 250 degrees C by microwave heating. The catalyst acidity was greatly influenced by ZrO2/SiC ratio, which in turn determined the acrolein selectivity. More importantly, much better catalyst stability was obtained in the microwave-heating process than the electric-heating process. In addition, the microwave-heating system was effective for the in-situ regeneration of deactivated catalyst.

Abstract:Catalytic hydration of acrolein to 3-hydroxypropionaldehyde (3-HPA) is a key step for the chemical pro-duction of 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PDO) from renewable glycerol. However, a main issue of low reaction rate and long reaction time exists in the conventional hydration process. Here, we developed a microwave-assisted system for the efficient conversion of acrolein to 3-HPA. Simultaneous cooling method was adopted to maintain continuous microwave irradiation and meanwhile stable temperature during the reaction. The effects of catalyst type, temperature, catalyst loading and microwave power on acrolein conversion and 3-HPA selectivity were examined. Kinetic study showed that microwave irradi-ation could help for the reduction in activation energy, which led to acceleration in reaction rate during the acrolein hydration process. In addition, the density functional theory (DFT) calculations on the adsorption and reaction behavior of reactants molecules on the catalyst are consistent with the experi-mental results, which confirm the intensification effect of the microwave field.(c) 2023 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising heterogeneous catalysts for biomass conversion to useful chemicals. In this work, four M-MOF-74s (Co, Ni, Mg, Zn) were synthesized at room temperature. Among these, Mg-MOF-74 exhibited the best catalytic activity for conversion of sugars to methyl lactate. A final product yield of methyl lactate from glucose of 35% was achieved with complete conversion of glucose at optimal reaction conditions. Catalytic performance of conversion of five sugars to methyl lactate over Mg-MOF-74 was studied, a product yield of 47% were obtained from sucrose. Mg-MOF-74 catalyst has shown to be reusable for at least three cycles.

Environmental friendliness, high yields, and short reaction times are the key features of this method. Furthermore, the method was applicable not only to the Ferrier reaction of 3,4,6‐tri‐O‐acetyl glucal and 3,4,6‐tri‐O‐acetyl galactal but also to the Ferrier reaction of 3,4‐di‐O‐acetyl arabinal.

Abstract:Levoglucosenone (anhydrosugar) is one of the most promising chemical platforms derived from the pyrolysis of biomass. It is a chiral building block for pharmaceuticals as well as an intermediate in the production of solvents and polymers. Therefore, the development of cost-efficient, low-energy production methods is vital for a future sustainable biorefinery. Here, a novel, green approach to the production of levoglucosenone was developed by using a microwave (MW)-assisted pyrolysis of cellulose in the presence of readily available clays. It was shown that natural and pillared clays in the presence of MW irradiation significantly increase the yield of levoglucosenone from cellulose. Both the water content and the presence of acid centres are critical characteristics that influence the yield and distribution of catalysed products. A unique experiment was designed by using a synergetic effect between different types of catalysts, which enhanced the levoglucosenone yield to 12.3 wt % with 63 % purity.

Abstract:Abstract Cellulose is the main component of lignocellulosic biomass. Its direct chemocatalytic conversion into lactic acid (LA), a powerful biobased chemical platform, represents an important, and more easily scalable alternative to the fermentative way. In this paper, we present the selective hydrothermal conversion of cellulose and simple sugars into LA, under mild reaction conditions in presence of ErCl 3 grafted on the mesoporous silica (MCM-41) surface. High yields and selectivity were obtained for the conversion of sugars under microwave (MW) irradiation at a relatively low temperature (200 °C) and short reaction times (10 min) under microwave (MW) irradiation. Ultrasounds (US) pre-treatment was investigated to reduce the cellulose crystallinity, before the MW-assisted conversion, providing LA with a yield of 64% within 90 min at 220 °C below the subcritical water conditions with increased operational safety. We finally discuss the scalability of the process and the recyclability of the catalyst.

Abstract:A series of mesoporous carbon/magnesium oxide composites (LDMC@MgO-x) with different Mg doping ratios were synthesized by using alkali lignin as the carbon source, potassium chloride as the salt template and magnesium nitrate as the catalytic site precursor, respectively. The BET, FTIR, SEM, and TEM analyses indicated that the as-prepared LDMC@MgO-x possessed a unique hierarchical porous structure with high specific surface area, rich functional groups, and uniformly distributed MgO nanoparticles. Among them, LDMC@MgO-20%, as an optimized base catalyst, could realize effective isomerization of glucose with a maximum fructose yield of 34.4 % in water at 130 °C for only 5 min under microwave assistance. In addition, the activation energy of glucose isomerization catalyzed by LDMC@MgO-20% was estimated to be about 43.6 kJ·mol-1, which was lower than that of most Lewis acid-catalyzed systems.

Abstract:The unusual oxidative ability of mesoporous silicas towards oxidation of an important lignin model molecule, 1,2-(4-hydroxy-3methoxy-phenoxy) ethanol, apocynol under microwave irradiation is presented in this work. Mesoporous MCM-41, HMS, SBA-15 and amorphous silica were employed as catalysts in the present study. Different reactivities were obtained for the various silica materials. It was assumed that the substrate conversion and product selectivity were highly influenced by the nature of mesoporous silica materials. Based on the nature of the catalysts and reaction product profile, a plausible mechanism has been proposed.

Abstract:The general need to slow the depletion of fossil resources and reduce carbon footprints has led to tremendous effort being invested in creating "greener" industrial processes and developing alternative means to produce fuels and synthesize platform chemicals. This work aims to design a microwave-assisted cascade process for a full biomass valorisation cycle. GVL (γ-valerolactone), a renewable green solvent, has been used in aqueous acidic solution to achieve complete biomass lignin extraction. After lignin precipitation, the levulinic acid (LA)-rich organic fraction was hydrogenated, which regenerated the starting solvent for further biomass delignification. This process does not requires a purification step because GVL plays the dual role of solvent and product, while the reagent (LA) is a product of biomass delignification. In summary, this bio-refinery approach to lignin extraction is a cascade protocol in which the solvent loss is integrated into the conversion cycle, leading to simplified methods for biomass valorisation.

Abstract:The acid-catalyzed intramolecular oxa-Michael addition of (E)-1-aryl-4-hydroxy-4-methyl-pent-1-en-3-ones under solvent-free and microwave irradiation conditions has been investigated. The results showed that Bronsted acids are more efficient than Lewis acids in this reaction. Up to 90% conversion and 81% yield were obtained using trifluoromethanesulfonic acid (triflic acid) as the catalyst, with short reaction times and an environmentally benign procedure.

Abstract:Biomass upgrading, which supplies important biomaterials, chemicals and fuels, is considered as an efficient way to realize the goal of carbon neutralization. Recently, γ-valerolactone (GVL) has gained increasing attention due to its wide applications. In this work, a novel protocol of microwave-assisted cascade catalytic upgrading of α-angelicalactone (α-AL) to GVL over metal triflate using alcohol as the hydrogen donor was proposed. The yield of GVL production from α-AL upgrading is strongly influenced by the Lewis acid strength of the metal triflate and the reduction potential of the employed alcohol. Among all tests, Sc (OTf) 3 showed the best catalytic performance in isopropanol media, giving 96.4 % GVL yield and 100 % α-AL conversion at 433 K within 3.0 h. Meanwhile, kinetic study indicated transfer hydrogenation of isopropyl levulinate to isopropyl 4-hydroxyvalerate was the rate-limited step with the apparent activation energy of 94.5 kJ/mol. This Sc (OTf) 3 catalyst was highly stable and could be reused for five cycles by simple vacuum distillation. In a word, this work provides an alternative for GVL production from biomass upgrading.

Abstract:The potential benefits of microwave irradiation for fructose dehydration into 5 hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) have been quantified over a sulfonated metal–organic framework (MOF), MIL 101(Cr)-SO3H. The effects of temperature (140–170 °C), batch time (5–300 min), and catalyst-to-substrate ratio (0.1–0.01 g/g) were systematically mapped. After 10 min of microwave (MW) irradiation at 140 °C in a DMSO–acetone reaction medium, practically complete fructose conversion was obtained with a 70% yield of 5-HMF. Without MW, i.e., using conventional heating (CH) at the same conditions, the fructose conversion was limited to 13% without any 5-HMF yield. Rather, 90 min of CH was required to reach a similarly high conversion and yield. The profound impact of moving from CH towards MW conditions on the reaction kinetics, also denoted as the microwave effect, has been quantified through kinetic modeling via a change in the Gibbs free energy of the transition state. The modeling results revealed an eight-fold rate coefficient enhancement for fructose dehydration owing to MW irradiation, while the temperature dependence of the various reaction steps almost completely disappeared in the investigated range of operating conditions.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as promising catalysts in biomass valorization processes, due to mainly their high structural and chemical flexibility when compared to other catalytic materials. However, it is still challenging to achieve perfect control in the synthetic method to obtain high-quality MOF particles containing uniform active sites, which will strongly influence their further catalytic performance. Herein, we have demonstrated that microwaves (MWs) can play a key role not only in the preparation of the MOF catalyst, specifically MIL-101(Fe), but also in performing the MOF-catalyzed oxidative esterification of furfural to methyl-2-furoate under mild conditions and in the absence of a base. MIL-101(Fe) exhibited a high conversion of furfural (>90 %) and excellent selectivity to methyl-2-furoate (>95 %) in just 1 h of reaction and at a moderate temperature (60 °C). A series of control experiments and DFT-mechanistic studies revealed the pivotal role played by the MIL-101(Fe) particles to drive the preferential formation of the target compound methyl-2-furoate, and evidenced that the MOF behaves as a truly heterogeneous catalyst. Overall, this work demonstrates that the potential of MW energy is underexploited, and highlights that there is still a long way to go in the development of new MOF-based catalytic approaches for biomass transformations.

Abstract:Microwave-assisted heating technology is considered to be a novel catalytic method. In this study, the microwave method was combined with the low-toxic metal chloride catalyst AlCl 3 and the green solvent GVL, to directly catalyze the conversion of glucose to HMF with the assistance of the microwave. Under the optimized reaction conditions, the ratio of water to organic phase GVL was 4:6 as the solvent, and the yield of HMF was 74.04 % when the mixture was reacted for 10 min under 220 W microwave power. Using H 2 O and GVL as solvents, the obtained reaction solution will be divided into an aqueous layer and an organic layer. The catalyst AlCl 3 mainly exists in the aqueous layer, and the product HMF is mainly distributed in the organic layer. This facilitates the separation of HMF and the recycling of the catalyst. This work highlights an efficient and environmentally friendly reaction system, which is expected to provide ideas for the preparation of HMF on an industrial scale.

Abstract:Lignin, a readily available form of biomass with a potential source of aromatic chemical compounds, has not been fully utilized due to its complex structure. Hence, this study aims to elaborate and optimize the effects of parametric microwave conditions for the catalytic degradation of lignin model compounds. In addition to that, 41 types of imidazolium-based Ionic liquids were employed for the conversion of lignin model compounds such as guaiacol and benzyl phenyl ether. The microwave-assisted conversion of lignin model compounds in imidazolium-based ionic liquids was performed at optimum applied microwave power 700 W and 30-min irradiation time. The percentages conversion and yield were quantified using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis. Results revealed that the chloride anion-based ionic liquids exhibited better nucleophilic behavior and catalyzed the cleavage of ether-based compounds efficiently under microwave irradiation. Among the imidazolium-based ionic liquids, 1H-methylimidazolium chloride ([1H-MIM][Cl]) exhibited better performance with guaiacol conversion and catechol yield of 99% and 81%, respectively. Therefore, the microwave-assisted technique was found to be more promising than conventional methods for the ionic liquid-based catalytic degradation of lignin model compounds.

Abstract:The use of microwave (MW) is promising for resolving energy-intensive problems that occur in carbohydrate bioconversion. To quantitatively investigate the mechanism of MW-accelerated reactions, the present study designs three carbon-based catalysts with distinct dielectric loss values (namely, SCS-SO 3 H, SCS-800-SO 3 H, MHCS-800-SO 3 H) for fructose hydrolysis. A fluorescence thermometer (Eu/Tb metal organic complex) was loaded on catalysts for in situ measurement of their localized temperature during MW heating. The combination of fluorescence experiments and theoretical modelling predicts that the temperature gradient between SCS-800-SO 3 H particles and bulk solvents reaches 26.10°C, which causes an 8.13-fold increase in reaction rate constants. Surprisingly, this speedup value is increased to 28.57 because of the thermal gradient up to 62.10°C when using MHCS-800-SO 3 H. In contrast, the MW-transparent SCS-SO 3 H exhibits no significant increase in the reaction rate. The quantitative elucidation of dominant roles of hot spots is promising for guiding the development of high-efficiency catalysts for MW-assisted heterogeneous reactions.

Abstract:Lignocellulose biomass effectively produces chemicals and fuels, which are of importance for the establishment of a sustainable society. The conversion of cellulose, the main component of the biomass, into significant precursors that can be further converted to different chemicals or fuels under gentle conditions is a promising route. Organic acids such as acetic, glycolic and formic acid are significant examples. A novel method to produce important platform chemicals from micro-crystalline cellulose (MCC) was developed. MCC was degraded as a result of oxidation with potassium chlorate by microwave radiation in a one-pot procedure. Efficient reaction conditions such as short reaction time and full conversion of cellulose were identified. The reaction products were analyzed by 1H and 13C NMR, XPS, TGA and XRD.
