Abstract:Abstract In this work, a theoretical investigation of thermochemistry and kinetics of the oxidation of bifunctional 2-Methoxyethanol (2ME) biofuel using methyl radical was introduced. Potential-energy surface for various channels for the oxidation of 2ME was studied at density function theory (M06-2X) and ab initio CBS-QB3 levels of theory. H-atom abstraction reactions, which are essential processes occurring in the initial stages of the combustion or oxidation of organic compounds, from different sites of 2ME were examined. A similar study was conducted for the isoelectronic n -butanol to highlight the consequences of replacing the Υ CH 2 group by an oxygen atom on the thermodynamic and kinetic parameters of the oxidation processes. Rate coefficients were calculated from the transition state theory. Our calculations show that energy barriers for n -butanol oxidation increase in the order of α ‹ O ‹ Υ ‹ β ‹ ξ, which are consistent with previous data. However, for 2ME the energy barriers increase in the order α ‹ β ‹ ξ ‹ O. At elevated temperatures, a slightly high total abstraction rate is observed for the bifunctional 2ME (4 abstraction positions) over n -butanol (5 abstraction positions).

Predictive Combustion Kinetics of OH Radical Reactions with a C5 Unsaturated Alcohol: The Competitive H-Abstraction and OH-Addition Reactions of 2-Methyl-3-buten-2-ol

Abstract:2-Methyl-3-buten-2-ol (MBO232) is a potential biofuel and renewable fuel additive. In a combustion environment, the consumption of MBO232 is mainly through the reaction with a OH radical, one of the most important oxidants. Here, we predict the intricate reactions of MBO232 and OH radicals under a broad range of combustion conditions, that is, 230-2500 K and 0.01-1000 atm. The potential energy surfaces of H-abstraction and OH-addition have been investigated at the CCSD(T)/CBS//M06-2X/def2-TZVP level, and the rate constants were calculated via Rice-Ramsperger-Kassel-Marcus/master equation (RRKM/ME) theory. The decomposition reactions of the critical intermediates from the OH-addition reactions have also been studied. Our results show that OH-addition reactions are dominant below 850 K, while H-abstraction reactions, especially the channel-abstracting H atoms from the methyl groups, are more competitive at higher temperatures. We found that it is necessary to discriminate H atoms attached to the same C atom, as their abstraction rates can differ by up to 1 order of magnitude. The calculated results show good agreement with the reported experimental data. We have provided the modified Arrhenius expressions for rate constants of the dominant channels. The kinetic data determined in this work are of much value for constructing the combustion models of MBO232 and understanding the combustion kinetics and mechanism of other unsaturated alcohols.

Abstract:Theoratical studies on the chemistry of methyl acetate radicals with molecular oxygen was conducted to get further understanding of biodiesel combustion. Reactions of the first oxygen addition to methyl acetate radicals has been investigated by high level quantum chemical methods, and rate constants were computed by using microcanonical variational transition state theory coupled with Rice–Ramsberger–Kassel–Marcus/Master-Equation theory. The calculated rate constants agree reasonably well with both theoretical and experimental results of chain-like alkoxy radicals. We considered each step in the oxidation process as a class of reaction, including all the possible reactions taking place, only the formation and re-dissociation of initial adducts are critical for the low temperature combustion of methyl acetate. The current study is an extension of kinetic data for such chain propagation reactions for methyl acetate oxidation in a wider pressure and temperature range, which can be used for the modeling study of low temperature oxidation of methyl esters.

Abstract:The isomerization and dissociation reactions of methyl decanoate (MD) radicals were theoretically investigated by using high-level theoretical calculations based on a two-layer ONIOM method, employing the QCISD(T)/CBS method for the high layer and the M06-2X/6-311++G(d,p) method for the low layer. Temperature- and pressure-dependent rate coefficients for the involved reactions were computed by using the transition state theory and the Rice-Ramsperger-Kassel-Marcus/Master-equation method. The structure-reactivity relationships were explored for the complicated multiple-well interconnected system of ten isomeric MD radicals. Comparative studies of methyl butanoate (MB) and MD were also performed systematically. Results show that the isomerization reactions are appreciably responsible for the population distribution of MD radicals at low and intermediate temperatures, while the β-scission reactions are dominant at higher temperatures. Although the rate constants of MB specific to methyl esters are close to those of MD in certain temperature ranges, MB is unable to simulate most of the dissociation reactions due to its short aliphatic chain. Significant differences of rate constants for isomerization reactions were observed between the calculated results and the literature data, which were estimated by analogy to alkane systems, but the rate constants of β-scissions show generally good agreement between theory and experiment. The current work extends kinetic data for isomerization and dissociation reactions of MD radicals, and it serves as a reference for the studies of detailed combustion chemistry of practical biodiesels.

Abstract:The β-scission reactions of hydroperoxy methyl-ester radicals (•QOOH radicals in methyl esters) and the concerted HO 2 • elimination reactions of methyl-ester peroxy radicals (ROO• in methyl esters) are two reaction classes that play a crucial role in terminating the chain reaction during the low-temperature combustion of methyl esters. These reactions are also key contributors to the negative temperature coefficient behavior and ignition inhibition observed in biodiesel. Although limited rate constants for these classes in small methyl esters have been calculated, those in larger methyl ester models are frequently approximated based on analogous alkyl reactions in alkanes. In this study, the isodesmic reaction method is utilized to correct the energy barriers and high-pressure-limit rate constants calculated at the low-level B3LYP method. The objective is to approximate the results obtained with the high-level G4 method. The β-scission class is further categorized into 6 subclasses based on the position of the newly formed CC bond in the olefin ester product and the location of the radical on the reactant and the concerted elimination class is divided into 4 subclasses based on the position of the newly formed CC bond in the olefin ester product and the carbon sites where the -OOH group and the eliminated H atom are situated. High-pressure-limit and pressure-dependent rate rules for subclasses are established by averaging rate constants within each subclass. Notably, substantial disparities are observed between our rate constants and those reported in models for large methyl esters, where rate constants are approximated from analogous alkyl reactions in alkanes. This underscores the significant uncertainty associated with the direct application of alkyl reaction rate constants in biodiesel models. Consequently, a low-temperature oxidation model of methyl octanoate/ethanol is developed through the incorporation of the rate rules derived in this study, resulting in a model that effectively reproduces experimental data within the conditions of a jet-stirred reactor.

Abstract:Methacrolein is a typical alpha, beta-unsaturated aldehyde in the combustion of various hydrocarbons and oxy-genated biofuels. The oxidation behavior of fuels that contain resonant C = C and CHO groups in the molecular structure has not been well established in the literature. Understanding the effects of these functional groups on oxidation chemistry is also significant in developing a comprehensive core mech-anism. In this work, the oxidation of methacrolein is studied in a jet-stirred reactor at atmospheric pressure at temperatures ranging from 475 to 875 K, employing synchrotron vacuum ultraviolet pho-toionization mass spectrometry technology to identify and quantify the intermediates. A kinetic model is developed following our previous works on trans-crotonaldehyde and examined against the present experimental datasets. Based on experimental observations and modeling analyses, the crucial pathways governing the oxidation reactivities are illustrated. A new pathway is proposed to interpret theformation of ketene during the oxidation process of methacrolein and trans-crotonaldehyde. Furthermore, the effects of molecular structures on the oxidation reactivities are discussed for methacrolein, trans-crotonaldehyde, n-butanal, and isobutanal. Hydrogen abstractions from the-CHO group dominate the initial fuel con-sumption for the four fuels producing R-CO radicals. The different R radicals produced from R-CO radicals' dissociation subsequently influence the oxidation reactivities. (c) 2022 The Combustion Institute. Published by Elsevier Inc. Embedded star clusters in the W51 giant molecular cloud

Abstract:We present sub-arcsecond (0.35-0.9 arcsec), near-infrared J-, H- and K-band photometric observations of six fields along the W51 giant molecular cloud (W51 GMC). Our observations reveal four new, embedded clusters and provide a new high-resolution (0.35 arcsec) view of the W51 IRS2 (G49.5 - 0.4) region. The cluster associated with G48.9 - 0.3 is found to be a double cluster enclosed in a nest of near-infrared nebulosity. We construct stellar surface density maps for four major clusters in the W51 GMC. These unveil the underlying hierarchical structure. Colour-colour and colour-magnitude diagrams for each of these clusters show clear differences in the embedded stellar populations and indicate the relative ages of these clusters. In particular, the clusters associated with the H II regions G48.9 - 0.3 and G49.0 - 0.3 are found to have a high fraction of young stellar objects and are therefore considered the youngest of all the near-infrared clusters in the W51 GMC. The estimated masses of the individual clusters, when summed, yield a total stellar mass of ∼10 4 M ○. in the W51 GMC, implying a star formation efficiency of 5-10 per cent. These results, in comparison with the CO observations of the W51 GMC, suggest for the first time that star formation in the W51 GMC is probably triggered by a galactic spiral density wave.

Abstract:Ethyl propionate shows great promise as a biodiesel molecule model. However, the current oxidation kinetic model falls short in accurately predicting its combustion behavior. Therefore, this study employed ab initio quantum chemistry methods to analyze the hydrogen abstraction reactions of ethyl propionate with various reactive radicals, including OH, O, H, CH 3 , C 2 H 3 , C 2 H 5 , HO 2 , CH 3 O and CH 3 O 2 , which play a critical role in refining the oxidation kinetics. Theoretical calculations were conducted to determine the rate constants and branching ratios for these reactions at temperatures ranging from 500 K to 2500 K using transition state theory, quasi-rigid rotor harmonic oscillator model, and tunneling correction. After updating the kinetics of hydrogen abstraction reactions in the oxidation mechanism proposed by Metcalfe et al., the modified model was validated by comparing the simulated mole fraction evolutions of ethyl propionate and major products in a jet-stirred reactor, ignition delay in a closed homogeneous batch reactor, and laminar flame speed with experimental data. The findings indicate that the modified model reliably reproduces the experimental data and significantly improves the prediction accuracy for low-temperature combustion of ethyl propionate when compared to the original model.

Abstract:Glycol ethers have been widely recognized as an alternative biofuels. 2-Methoxyethanol (ME2, HOCH 2 CH 2 OCH 3 ) is the simplest and most representative glycol ether. Hence, the combustion chemistry of ME2 has aroused extensive interest. The ME2 pyrolysis has been investigated experimentally in a jet-stirred reactor (JSR) at atmospheric pressure within the temperature range of 650–1075 K for the first time. FTIR, GC–MS, and GC-FID were used to identify and quantify species profiles in ME2 pyrolysis. Sixteen intermediates were newly detected by the present work including acetaldehyde, hydroxyacetaldehyde, and methyl vinyl ether which are essential for mechanism development. The H abstraction reactions of ME2 by H, CH 3 , HO 2 , OH, O 2, and the unimolecular reactions of four fuel-related radicals were first studied via high level ab initio calculations. The geometries optimization, vibrational frequencies, and intrinsic reaction coordinate (IRC) calculations were carried out at the M06–2X/6–311++ G (d,p) level of theory. Conventional transition state theory (TST) and Rice-Ramsperger-Kassel-Marcus/Master Equation (RRKM/ME) were used to calculate the temperature- and pressure-dependent rate constants from 300 to 2000 K and 0.01 to 100 atm for the first time. It is found that the H abstraction reactions at the two middle carbon atoms are the most favored pathways, and b-scissions for fuel-related radicals have the lowest energy barriers. The thermochemical properties of ME2 and its derived radicals have been obtained via the combination of composite methods. A mechanism involving 596 species and 3123 reactions was developed for the first time to predict the ME2 pyrolysis characteristics based on experimental and calculated results obtained by the present work. Good agreements were achieved between the measured and simulated results. Rate of production (ROP), as well as sensitivity analysis, were performed to get a deeper insight into the ME2 pyrolysis. It has been revealed that the major ME2 decomposition channels are the H abstractions by H, CH 3 , and OH radicals, and unimolecular reactions have scarce contributions to fuel decay. The results, in terms of the measured data and of the calculated results, and the newly developed kinetic model as well as findings obtained within this study will assist and contribute to a better understanding of combustion characteristics of ME2 and of glycol ethers as well.

Chemical Kinetic Study on Reaction Pathway of Anisole Oxidation at Various Operating Condition

Abstract:Biofuels are considered as an alternative source of energy which can decrease the growing consumption of fossil fuel, hence decreasing pollution. Anisole (methoxybenzene) is a potential source of biofuel produced from cellulose base compounds. It is mostly available as a surrogate of phenolic rich compound. Because of the attractive properties of this fuel in combustion, it is important to do detail kinetic study on oxidation of anisole. In this study a detail chemical mechanism is developed to capture the chemical kinetics of anisole oxidation. The mechanism is developed using an automatic reaction mechanism generator (RMG). To generate the mechanism, RMG uses some known set of species and initial conditions such as temperature, pressure, and mole fractions. Proper thermodynamic and reaction library is used to capture the aromaticity of anisole. The generated mechanism has 340 species and 2532 reactions. Laminar burning speed (LBS) calculated through constant volume combustion chamber (CVCC) at temperature ranges from 460–550 K, pressure of 2–3 atm and equivalence ratio of 0.8–1.4 is used to validate the generated mechanism. Some deviation with experimental result is observed with the newly generated mechanism. Important reaction responsible for LBS calculation, is selected through sensitivity analysis. Rate coefficient of sensitive reactions are collected from literature to modify and improve the mechanism with experimental result. The generated mechanism is further validated with available ignition delay time (IDT) results ranging from 10–20 atm pressure, 0.5–1 equivalence ratio and 870–1600 K temperature. A good agreement of results is observed at different operating ranges. Oxidation of anisole at stoichiometric condition and atmospheric pressure in jet stirred reactor is also used to compare the species concentration of the mechanism. This newly generated mechanism is considered as a good addition for further study of anisole kinetics.

Abstract:AbstractOxygenated organic compounds derived from biomass (biofuel) are a promising alternative renewable energy resource. Alcohols are widely used as biofuels, but studies on bifunctional alcohols are still limited. This work investigates the unimolecular thermal degradation of 2-methoxyethanol (2ME) using DFT/BMK and ab initio (CBS-QB3 and G3) methods. Enthalpies of the formation of 2ME and its decomposition species have been calculated. Conventional transition state theory has been used to estimate the rate constant of the pyrolysis of 2ME over a temperature range of 298–2000 K. Production of methoxyethene via 1,3-H atom transfer represents the most kinetically favored path in the course of 2ME pyrolysis at room temperature and requires less energy than the weakest Cα − Cβ simple bond fission. Thermodynamically, the most preferred channel is methane and glycoladhyde formation. A ninefold frequency factor gives a superiority of the Cα − Cβ bond breaking over the Cγ − Oβ bond fission despite comparable activation energies of these two processes.

Ab initio kinetic study on the abstraction reactions of methylcyclohexane and implications for high‐temperature ignition simulations from shock tube experiment

Abstract:Methylcyclohexane (MCH) is the simplest alkylated cyclohexane, and has been widely employed in surrogate models to represent the cycloalkanes in real fuels. Thus, extensive experimental and kinetic modeling studies have been performed to understanding the combustion chemistry of MCH. However, through a detailed literature analysis, there still lack a systematic theoretical study on the abstraction reactions of MCH, which are the main initial oxidation pathway of MCH. Herein, this work reports a systematic ab initio chemical kinetic study on the abstraction reactions of MCH with different radicals/species. Specifically, reaction rate constants of 30 abstraction reactions of MCH with H/O/OH/O2/HO2/CH3 at different sites are computed using transition state theory (TST) by using quantum chemistry calculation results at DLPNO‐CCSD(T)/CBS//M06‐2X/cc‐pVTZ level. The computed results are incorporated into a detailed mechanism to simulate newly measured ignition delay times (IDTs) of MCH in this work at equivalence ratios of 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0, pressures of 2 and 5 bar, temperatures ranging from 1140 to 1640 K. The updated detailed mechanism demonstrates improvement in the prediction of IDTs, especially at fuel‐rich conditions. The fuel concentration and dilution effect on the IDTs are discussed, and a general Arrhenius expression is adopted to fit the IDTs from both this work and literature work. This work should be valuable for further optimization of detailed kinetic mechanisms and also for gaining insight into the combustion chemistry of MCH.

Abstract:Biodiesel is a promising, sustainable, and carbon-neutral fuel. However, studying its combustion mechanisms comprehensively, both theoretically and experimentally, presents challenges due to the complexity and size of its molecules. One significant obstacle in determining low-temperature oxidation mechanisms for biodiesel is the lack of kinetic parameters for the reactions of intramolecular H-migration reaction of alkyl-ester peroxy radicals, labeled as R(C=O)OR'-OO• (with 'dot' representing the radical). Current biodiesel combustion mechanisms often estimate these parameters from the analogous reaction class of intramolecular H-migration reactions of alkyl peroxy radicals in alkane combustion mechanisms. However, such estimations are imprecise and neglect the unique characteristics of the ester group. This research aims to explore the kinetics of the reaction class of H-migration reactions of methyl-ester peroxy radicals. The reaction class is divided into 20 subclasses based on the newly formed cycle size of the transition state, the positions of the peroxy radical and the transferred H atom, and the types of carbons from which the H atom is transferred. Energy barriers for each subclass are calculated by using the CBS-QB3//M06-2X/6-311++G(d,p) method. High-pressure-limit and pressure-dependent rate constants ranging from 0.01 to 100 atm are determined using the transition state theory and Rice-Ramsberger-Kassel-Marcus/Master-Equation method, respectively. It is noting that the pressure-dependent rate constants calculated for each individual isomerization channel could bring some uncertainties while neglecting the interconnected pathways. A comprehensive comparison is made between our values of selected reactions and high-level calculated values of corresponding reactions reported in the literature. The small deviation observed between these values indicates the accuracy and reliability of the energy barriers and rate constants calculated in this study. Additionally, our calculated high-pressure-limit rate constants are compared with the corresponding values in combustion mechanisms of esters, which were estimated based on analogous reactions of alkyl peroxy radicals. These comparative analyses shed light on the significant impact of the ester group on the kinetics, particularly when the ester group is involved in the reaction center. Finally, the high-pressure-limit rate rule and pressure-dependent rate rule for each subclass are derived by averaging the rate constants of reactions in each subclass. The accurate and reasonable rate rules for methyl-ester peroxy radicals developed in this study play a crucial role in enhancing our understanding of the low-temperature oxidation mechanisms of biodiesel.

Abstract:The oxidation of methyl formate (CH3OCHO), the simplest methyl ester, is studied in a series of burner-stabilized laminar flames at pressures of 22–30Torr and equivalence ratios (Φ) from 1.0 to 1.8 for flame conditions of 25–35% fuel. Flame structures are determined by quantitative measurements of species mole fractions with flame-sampling molecular-beam synchrotron photoionization mass spectrometry (PIMS). Methyl formate is observed to be converted to methanol, formaldehyde and methane as major intermediate species of mechanistic relevance. Smaller amounts of ethylene and acetylene are also formed from methyl formate oxidation. Reactant, product and major intermediate species profiles are in good agreement with the computations of a recently developed kinetic model for methyl formate oxidation [S. Dooley, M.P. Burke, M. Kinet. 42 (2010) 527–529] which shows that hydrogen abstraction reactions dominate fuel consumption under the tested flame conditions. Radical–radical reactions are shown to be significant in the formation of a number of small concentration intermediates, including the production of ethyl formate (C2H5OCHO), the subsequent decomposition of which is the major source of observed ethylene concentrations. The good agreement of model computations with this set of experimental data provides a further test of the predictive capabilities of the proposed mechanism of methyl formate oxidation. Other salient issues in the development of this model are discussed, including recent controversy regarding the methyl formate decomposition mechanism, and uncertainties in the experimental measurement and modeling of low-pressure flame-sampling experiments. Kinetic model computations show that worst-case disturbances to the measured temperature field, which may be caused by the insertion of the sampling cone into the flame, do not alter mechanistic conclusions provided by the kinetic model. However, such perturbations are shown to be responsible for disparities in species location between measurement and computation.

Abstract:Methyl acetate is considered a prototype molecule to study biodiesel ignition and combustion and is seen as a possible fuel or fuel additive. For this reason, methyl acetate decomposition paths have been investigated in recent years. In the present study, hydrogen abstraction reactions on methyl acetate by OH(2Π), HO2(2A'), H(2Σg), O(3P), and O2(3Σg) were conducted, and the effect of methodology and anharmonic corrections on the rate coefficients were evaluated. The M06-2X and B3LYP-D3 functionals with the cc-pVDZ, cc-pVTZ, aug-cc-pVDZ, and aug-cc-pVTZ basis set were used for methodology evaluation and the CCSD(T)/cc-pVTZ//M06-2X/aug-cc-pVTZ for the rate coefficients calculation and literature comparisons. The rate coefficients were calculated in the range of 250-3500 K, including tunneling corrections, methyl-hindered rotations, and anharmonic effects calculated by the VPT2 method. The methodology analysis showed that the B3LYP-D3 functional leads to lower activation energies for all elementary reactions studied, and the double-zeta basis is insufficient to calculate precise rate coefficients. The inclusion of anharmonic corrections consistently lowered the rate coefficients of all elementary reactions studied and changed the Arrhenius plot profile with the temperature. Significant anharmonic effects were observed at higher temperatures, being the reaction with O2(3Σg) the most affected by this correction. Differences superior to 105 cm3 molec-1 s-1 in the rate coefficients were observed in some cases.

Abstract:Hydrogen atom abstraction by methyl peroxy (CH 3 OȮ) radicals can play an important role in gasoline/ethanol interacting chemistry for fuels that produce high concentrations of methyl radicals. Detailed kinetic reactions for hydrogen atom abstraction by CH 3 OȮ radicals from the components of FGF-LLNL (a gasoline surrogate) including cyclopentane, toluene, 1-hexene, n -heptane, and isooctane have been systematically studied in this work. The M06–2X/6–311++G(d,p) level of theory was used to obtain the optimized structure and vibrational frequency for all stationary points and the low-frequency torsional modes. The 1-D hindered rotor treatment for low-frequency torsional modes was treated at M06–2X/6–31G level of theory. The UCCSD(T)-F12a/cc-pVDZ-F12 and QCISD(T)/CBS level of theory were used to calculate single point energies for all species. High pressure limiting rate constants for all hydrogen atom abstraction channels were performed using conventional transition state theory with unsymmetric tunneling corrections. Individual rate constants are reported in the temperature range from 298.15 to 2000 K. Our computed results show that the abstraction of allylic hydrogen atoms from 1-hexene is the fastest at low temperatures. When the temperature increases, the hydrogen atom abstraction reaction channel at the primary alkyl site gradually becomes dominant. Thermodynamics properties for all stable species and high-pressure limiting rate constants for each reaction pathway obtained in this work were incorporated into the latest gasoline surrogate/ethanol model to investigate the influence of the rate constants calculated here on model predicted ignition delay times.

Abstract:Ketones have been considered as potential biofuels and main components of blend stock for internal engines. To better understand the chemical kinetics of ketones, ignition delay times of 2-pentanone (propyl methyl ketone, PMK) and 3-pentanone (diethyl ketone, DEK) were measured at temperatures of 895-1128 K under 10 and 20 bar, at equivalence ratios ( phi) of 0.5 and 1.0 in a rapid compression machine (RCM). To explore the impact of carbonyl functionality and resonance stabilized structures of fuel radicals on their combustion kinetics, high-temperature pyrolysis at 1130 K and relatively low-temperature oxidation at 950 K studies were performed in an RCM, and the time-resolved species concentration profiles under these two conditions were quantified using a fast sampling system and gas chromatography (GC). A new kinetic model containing low-temperature reactions was built aiming at predicting the pyrolysis and oxidation behaviors of both ketones. The consumption pathways of the resonance stabilization fuel radicals through oxygen addition and following reactions are promoted since the decomposition rates of these radicals are about 4 orders magnitudes lower than regular fuel radicals. The occurrences of the so-called "addition-dissociation reactions", i.e. , ketones reacting with a hydrogen yielding aldehyde or reacting with a methyl radical yielding shorter-chain-length ketones, are verified in pyrolysis experiments. Based on experiments and model analysis, the carbonyl functionality in both ketones is preserved during the process of beta-scissions of fuel radicals and alpha-scissions of fuel-related acyl radicals, resulting in the direct formation of CO and ketene. Abstract:With the world's energy resources decreasing, ethanol/acetone/ethyl acetate mixed fuel has the potential as a fossil fuel alternative or oxygenated fuel additive. In this work, the burning characteristics of ethanol/acetone/ethyl acetate mixed fuels including 3 pure fuels, 9 binary fuels, and 7 ternary fuels were studied at a temperature of 358 K, the pressure of 1 bar, and the equivalence ratios of 0.7 to 1.4 in the constant volume combustion chamber (CVCC). The burning velocities of the ternary fuels were compared at phi = 0.8, 1.0, and 1.4. The results show that the laminar burning velocities of the mixed fuels are affected by the contents of ethanol, acetone, and ethyl acetate. The Markstein length, Markstein number, and burning flux were also analyzed in this paper. Furthermore, a detailed chemical mechanism comprising 506 species and 2809 reactions was reduced to a skeletal mechanism including 98 species and 642 reactions, using the directed relation graph with error propagation (DRGEP). The experimental and the simulated laminar burning velocities were compared. The results of laminar burning velocities show that the relative deviation of ETEAAC 112 is approximately 17.5%. The sensitivity coefficients, flame structure, and reaction paths of ethyl acetate were investigated with the skeletal and the detailed mechanisms. It is found that the key reaction path is retained in the skeletal mechanism.
Modeling-Experiment-Theory Analysis of Reactions Initiated from Cl + Methyl Formate

Abstract:Methyl formate (MF; CH3OCHO) is the smallest representative of esters, which are common components of biodiesel. The present study characterizes the thermal dissociation kinetics of the radicals formed by H atom abstraction from MF─CH3OCO and CH2OCHO─through a combination of modeling, experiment, and theory. For the experimental effort, excimer laser photolysis of Cl2 was used as a source of Cl atoms to initiate reactions with MF in the gas phase. Time-resolved species profiles of MF, Cl2, HCl, CO2, CH3, CH3Cl, CH2O, and CH2ClOCHO were measured and quantified using photoionization mass spectrometry at temperatures of 400-750 K and 10 Torr. The experimental data were simulated using a kinetic model, which was informed by ab initio-based theoretical kinetics calculations and included chlorine chemistry and secondary reactions of radical decomposition products. We calculated the rate coefficients for the H-abstraction reactions Cl + MF → HCl + CH3OCO (R1a) and Cl + MF → HCl + CH2OCHO (R1b): k1a,theory = 6.71 × 10-15·T1.14·exp(-606/T) cm3/molecule·s; k1b,theory = 4.67 × 10-18·T2.21·exp(-245/T) cm3/molecule·s over T = 200-2000 K. Electronic structure calculations indicate that the barriers to CH3OCO and CH2OCHO dissociation are 13.7 and 31.6 kcal/mol and lead to CH3 + CO2 (R3) and CH2O + HCO (R5), respectively. The master equation-based theoretical rate coefficients are k3,theory (P = ∞) = 2.94 × 109·T1.21·exp(-6209/T) s-1 and k5,theory (P = ∞) = 8.45 × 108·T1.39·exp(-15132/T) s-1 over T = 300-1500 K. The calculated branching fractions into R1a and R1b and the rate coefficient for R5 were validated by modeling of the experimental species time profiles and found to be in excellent agreement with theory. Additionally, we found that the bimolecular reactions CH2OCHO + Cl, CH2OCHO + Cl2, and CH3 + Cl2 were critical to accurately model the experimental data and constrain the kinetics of MF-radicals. Inclusion of the kinetic parameters determined in this study showed a significant impact on combustion simulations of larger methyl esters, which are considered as biodiesel surrogates.
