Abstract:How to effectively remove toxic dyes from the industrial wastewater using a green low-cost lignocellulose-based adsorbent, such as lignin, has become a topic of great interest but remains quite challenging. In this study, cosolvent-enhanced lignocellulosic fractionation (CELF) pretreatment and Mannich reaction were combined to generate an aminated CELF lignin which is subsequently applied for removal of methylene blue and direct blue (DB) 1 dye from aqueous solution. 31P NMR was used to track the degree of amination, and an orthogonal design was applied to determine the relationship between the extent of amination and reaction parameters. The physicochemical, morphological, and thermal properties of the aminated CELF lignin were characterized to confirm the successful grafting of diethylenetriamine onto the lignin. The aminated CELF lignin proved to be an effective azo dye-adsorbent, demonstrating considerably enhanced dye decolorization, especially toward DB 1 dye (>90%). It had a maximum adsorption capacity of DB 1 dye of 502.7 mg/g, and the kinetic study suggested the adsorption process conformed to a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The isotherm results also showed that the modified lignin-based adsorbent exhibited monolayer adsorption. The adsorbent properties were mainly attributed to the incorporated amine functionalities as well as the increased specific surface area of the aminated CELF lignin.

Abstract:A high-sensitivity small-angle sensor based on surface plasmon resonance technology and heterodyne interferometry is proposed that uses a new technique with two right-angle prisms. Interestingly, the technique provides a novel method for designing small-angle sensors with high sensitivity and high resolution. Its theoretical resolution can reach 1.2x10(-7) rad over the measurement range of -0.15 degrees < or =theta< or =0.15 degrees . The method has some merits, e.g., a simple optical setup, easy operation, high resolution, high sensitivity, and rapid measurement. Its feasibility is demonstrated.

Abstract:Lignin, renowned for its abundance of hydroxyl groups, was utilized in three dimensions to fabricate a hydrogel matrix. In this study, the optimal conditions for the preparation of a lignin-crosslinked hydrogel and its potential for dye and antioxidant removal were investigated. The hydrogel was synthesized through a cross-linking reaction, with varying amounts of cross-linking agent (poly(ethylene glycol) diglycidyl ether) added to adjust for the lignin content. Chemical structure analysis of the lignin-crosslinked hydrogel was conducted using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, confirming successful hydrogel formation. Additionally, thermal analysis revealed an increase in the maximum thermal decomposition temperature with increasing cross-linker content. The lignin cross-linked hydrogel demonstrated a significantly higher swelling ability at pH 7 compared to pH 3. The dye adsorption capacity of the lignin-crosslinked hydrogel, which was evaluated using crystal violet (CV), showed a maximum adsorption capacity of 106 mg∙g-1. The CV adsorption behavior followed Freundlich isotherms and pseudo-first-order kinetics. Moreover, the lignin-crosslinked hydrogel exhibited notable antioxidant activity, which was attributed to the phenolic hydroxyl groups of lignin macromolecules. Therefore, lignin-crosslinked hydrogels prepared using cross-linking agents have promising application potential in various fields.

Abstract:Lignin-based polymers have great potential for water treatment due to their environmental friendliness, biodegradability, and safety. Herein, lignin-betaine polymer (LB) was synthesized by Steglich esterification. The formation of ester groups between lignin and betaine was corroborated by Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), nuclear magnetic resonance hydrogen spectroscopy (NMR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), elemental analysis and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The LB was applied in the treatment of the methylene blue -containing wastewater, and demonstrated a dye removal rate of 98 %. Our study indicated that the dye removal was dominated by chemical adsorption. Moreover, the LB exhibited durable dye removal performance and maintained excellent reusability after four cycles. Collectively, the lignin-betaine polymer could provide an effective candidate for wastewater treatment, with specific potency for the removal of cationic dye.

Abstract:In this study, sodium lignosulfonate (LS) was used as raw material. Acrylamide (AM) and acryloxyethyltrimethylammonium chloride (DAC) were grafted onto LS through the free radical graft copolymerisation to synthesise a functional biomass terpolymer lignin-based hydrogel adsorbent (LAD). The effects of different factors on the LAD adsorption of Acid Red (AR 73) were investigated through the static adsorption method. LAD adsorbed AR 73 (C0=100mg·L−1) for 2 h to reach equilibrium, and the equilibrium adsorption capacity and removal rate were 47.59 mg·g−1 and 95.18%, respectively. The prepared LAD hydrogel swelling ratio for 2 h was 25 g·g−1, and the water loss rate in ethanol solvent in 120 min was 93.51%. The adsorption of AR 73 by LAD was consistent with the Langmuir isotherm adsorption model. This adsorption was a single-molecule adsorption with a maximum adsorption capacity of 409.84 mg·g−1. The adsorption was a process of spontaneous heat release and entropy reduction. The adsorption kinetic was in accordance with the pseudo-second-order model, and the adsorption activation energy was 2.501 kJ·moL−1. Moreover, the mechanism of adsorption was electrostatic attraction, and comprehensive effects of physical, and chemical adsorption and hydrogen bond. The LAD hydrogel adsorbent has a remarkable adsorption effect on AR 73, and can be used as an efficient and recyclable biomass adsorbent for the treatment of anionic dye wastewater.

Abstract:Lignin, natural aromatic polymer derived from plant dry matter, is second abundant biopolymer. Recently, interest in applications of lignin, especially as an adsorbent material is increasing. However, the physicochemical complexity of lignin significantly reduces access to practical environmental remediation processes. Also, there is a limitation because the adsorption performance of the pristine lignin materials is not superior to that of commercial adsorbent and ion exchange resin material. In this study, spherical lignin particles with high physicochemical stability and excellent Cr(VI) adsorption capacity are prepared using a polyethylenimine (PEI) modification strategy. This modification process significantly improves the mechanical properties and water stability of lignin by complementing the instability of lignin particles. In addition, the PEI-lignin particles exhibit a superior Cr(VI) removal capability (657.9 mg/g, the highest value for a PEI-modified natural adsorbent), which is attributed to their structural stability and introduced amine functional groups. The Cr(VI) removal with PEI-lignin particles is performed via intra-particle diffusion and adsorption followed by covalent bonding combined with a reduction process. Moreover, the PEI-lignin particles exhibit excellent reusability, which sustains their high adsorption efficiency over a long and repeated adsorption period. The results herein strongly support the potential use of PEI-lignin particles as a high performance bio-sorption material for heavy metal removal and its detoxification in aqueous wastewater streams. Evidently, this lignin-based bio-sorbent manufacturing system can provide sustainable bio-resource recycling and cost efficiency.

Abstract:In this work, a lignin-based adsorbent with high positive charge and excellent biocompatibility was prepared by grafting quaternary ammonium groups. Firstly, the structure of quaternized lignin (QL) was characterized by 1 H NMR, FT-IR, GPC, TGA, zeta potential etc . Then, the effects of adsorbent dosage, ambient temperature, stirring frequency, contact time and initial concentration on the adsorption capacity were studied in detail. The results showed that QL exhibited efficient adsorption for rhodamine B (RB), methylene blue (MB), acid blue 92 (AB-92) and congo red (CR) dyes. All adsorption processes followed the pseudo-second order and Langmuir models. The maximum adsorption capacities of RB, MB, AB-92 and CR were 41.85, 49.47, 110.53 and 134.61 mg/g, respectively. Finally, antimicrobial activity assays and cellular viability assays demonstrated the excellent biocompatibility of QL with no cytotoxic effect. In a murine wound model, QL remarkably accelerated the re-epithelialization formation and dermal closure, indicating that it could promote cell proliferation. The finding of this study provides a facile and eco-friendly strategy to construct hydrophilic and biocompatible versatile lignin-based adsorbent for removing of cationic and anionic dyes, and the adsorbent could also be applied as an effective wound dressing, protecting the organisms in water during the adsorption.

Abstract:In order to solve the problem of dye pollution of the water environment, a green macroparticle composite (CPAM-Dia/SA-La) as a bioadsorbent was prepared through a sodium alginate (SA) reaction with a polyacrylamide (CPAM)-modified diatomite (Dia) and further La(III) ion crosslinking polymerization, and characterized by various analytical methods. The important preparation and adsorption conditions of the composite were explored by the adsorption of Acid blue 113 (AB 113) and Congo red (CR) dyes. The dye adsorption efficiency was evaluated. The results show that CPAM-Dia/SA-La composite prepared under the optimized conditions displays superstrong adsorption capacities of 2907 and 1578 mg/g for AB 113 and CR and almost 100% removal efficiency within 60 min adsorption time at pH 2.0 and 298 K, and they decrease slightly with the pH increase to 10. The fitting of equilibrium data to the Langmuir model is the best and the adsorption kinetic processes can be expressed by the Pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The adsorption processes are both spontaneous and exothermic. The analysis results of FT−IR and XPS revealed that the superstrong adsorption of CPAM-Dia/SA-La for dyes. The composite adsorbed by the dye can be recycled. CPAM-Dia/SA-La is a promising biosorbent for dye wastewater treatment.

Abstract:<p>Wastewater contaminated with dyes is discharged by huge amount daily, and involved many hazardous materials. Thus, this study focused on introducing low cost, ecofriendly and available removal agent (lignin-based adsorbent). Three adsorbents, APKL-4, APKL-5 and APKL-6 were obtained using gradient acid precipitation technology and used for methylene blue (MB) removal. The samples were characterized by SEM, FT-IR and zeta potential analyzer. The results indicated that the three adsorbents exhibit significantly different adsorption behavior due to the structural differences caused by fractionation. The APKL-5 and APKL-6 have fewer hydrophilic groups in their molecules and thus have more adsorption active sites to load MB molecules. A pore structure inside of APKL-5 molecules is form in acid fractionation, which allows it to carry more MB molecules. The adsorption capacity of APKL-5 increased 3.8 times (from 345 to 1310 mg g<sup>−1</sup>) in the alkaline solution which showing excellent pH responsiveness. This paper presents a new promising approach for preparing high efficiency, low cost and eco-friendly adsorbents and builds a foundation for developing further applications of lignin-based adsorbents.</p>

Abstract:Here, a Cu2+-doped lignin-based adsorbent (Cu-AL) was fabricated via the amination and Cu2+-doping of industrial alkali lignin for massive and selective adsorption of cationic dyes azure B (AB) and saffron T (ST). The Cu-N coordination structures endowed Cu-AL with stronger electronegativity and higher dispersity. Through the electrostatic attraction, π-π interaction, H-bonding, and Cu2+ coordination, the adsorption capacities of AB and ST reached up to 1168 and 1420 mg g−1, respectively. The pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir isotherm model were more relevant to the AB and ST adsorption on Cu-AL. Based on the thermodynamic study, the adsorption progresses were endothermic, spontaneous, and feasible. The Cu-AL maintained high removal efficiency to dyes after 4 reuses (>80%). Importantly, the Cu-AL could efficiently remove and separate AB and ST from dye mixtures even in real time. All the above characteristics demonstrated that Cu-AL was an excellent adsorbent for fast wastewater treatment.

Abstract:The removal of hazardous anionic dyes from wastewater is a critical environmental challenge due to their toxic effects and persistence in aquatic systems. This study investigates the adsorption performance of a new composite material, consisting of MgAl layered double hydroxide (LDH) and Lignin (MgAl LDH/Lignin), to remove three different anionic dyes: congo red, direct yellow, and procion red. The composite material was synthesized and thoroughly examined using various techniques, including X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller, and Barrett-Joyner-Halenda. The adsorption isotherm studies indicate that the adsorption of congo red and procion red onto the MgAl LDH/Lignin composite follows the Langmuir isotherm model, suggesting a monolayer adsorption on a uniform surface. On the other hand, the adsorption of direct yellow conforms to the Freundlich isotherm model, indicating the possibility of multiple layers being adsorbed on a surface with varying properties. The maximum adsorption capacities for congo red, direct yellow, and procion red were found to be 75.76 mg/g, 51.55 mg/g, and 74.63 mg/g, respectively. The results of this study demonstrate the promising capabilities of MgAl LDH/Lignin composites as highly efficient adsorbents for the treatment of wastewater contaminated with anionic dyes. This research provides valuable insights into the potential of these composites to address the pressing issue of water pollution in a sustainable manner.
Amino-functionalization of lignocellulosic biopolymer to be used as a green and sustainable adsorbent for anionic contaminant removal

Abstract:In this work, natural biopolymer stemming from lignocellulosic peanut hull biomass was used as a green and low-cost adsorbent to eliminate anionic Congo red (CR) and Cr(VI) ions from aqueous sample. In order to enhance the removal performance, the lignocellulosic biopolymer was subjected to amino-modification by the graft copolymerization of (3-acrylamidopropyl) trimethylammonium chloride and N, N'-methylenebisacrylamide. The property of the prepared amino-functionalized biopolymer (AFB) was examined through FTIR, TG, SEM, particle size analysis, zeta potential determination and XPS. The adsorption efficacy of AFB for CR and Cr(VI) was tested at different pH, contact time and initial concentration. The kinetic, isotherm and thermodynamics investigations revealed that the uptakes of CR and Cr(VI) were the combination processes of chemical and physical interactions, and both endothermic in nature. The AFB exhibited good reusability without significant loss in adsorption capacity after five consecutive cycles. Mechanistic analysis indicated that the quaternary ammonium groups in AFB contributed a lot to the binding of anionic compounds through electrostatic attraction. In addition, n-π and hydrogen bonding while reduction and coordination were also responsible for the removal of CR and Cr(VI), respectively. The present study provides a favorable strategy for the removal of anionic contaminates in water by using green and sustainable lignocellulosic wastes.

Abstract:In contrast to conventional non‐biobased adsorbents, lignin emerges as a cost‐effective and environmentally benign alternative for water treatment. This study identifies unexpected and unpredicted multifunctional properties of lignin nanoparticles (LNPs). LNPs, which are prepared by simple physical processes, demonstrated for the first time to behave as multifunctional materials able to adsorb and photodegrade methylene blue (MB) in aqueous medium upon UV irradiation. Furthermore, the synthetic approach adopted to synthesize LNPs – and therefore their surface properties – strongly affects their performances. More specifically, LNPs obtained by solvent‐antisolvent nanoprecipitation (SLNPs) show the highest MB adsorption properties (98% removal), reaching a maximum adsorption capacity of 43 mg g‐1, and the fastest adsorption kinetics with respect to other lignin‐based adsorbents. Conversely, hydrotropic LNPs (HLNPs) exhibit exceptional photocatalytic activity, resulting in 98% MB degradation over 6 hours of UV irradiation, combined with the ability to be easily recycled and reused. The present effort paves the way for the use of LNPs as efficient multifunctional materials able to perform concurrently adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of dye pollutants, toward the creation of a sustainable biobased water treatment platform.

Abstract:Adsorption method is an effective approach to treat wastewater containing methylene blue. Herein, a cost-effective and eco-friendly lignin-based network composite hydrogel adsorbent (PAA@SML) was constructed by using polyacrylic acid (PAA) to crosslink with sulfomethylated lignin (SML) via free radical polymerization for adsorption of methylene blue (MB) from wastewater. The constructed exhibited remarkable adsorption performance towards removal of MB, with a maximum theoretical adsorption capacity of 777.1 mg·g −1 . The improved efficiency can be attributed to the well-established network structure and abundant hydrophilic functional groups present in the adsorbent, promoting the interaction between methylene blue (MB) molecules and the adsorption sites of the adsorbent. The adsorption process of the adsorbent for MB followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic and the Langmuir isotherm models, which illustrated the adsorption process attributed to monolayer chemisorption. Mechanism investigation confirmed that the adsorption of MB by primarily relied on hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions. Moreover, the recyclability test demonstrated excellent regeneration usability and stability of , and the adsorption capacity maintained above 74.0 % after five cycles. This constructed lignin-based network composite hydrogel is considered to have great potential in the treatment of organic dye in wastewater.

Abstract:Lignin, a natural biopolymer present in agri‐residue can be modified to generate adsorbent materials with enhanced capacity to remove pollutants from wastewater. Lignin is used as a natural resource to synthesize metal oxide‐based nanoadsorbents. Such lignin‐based green nanomaterials remove common pollutants from wastewater including dyes, heavy metals, and bacteria. The lignin‐based water purification technique holds immense potential to clean wastewater. Valorizing biodegradable raw materials derived from agri‐waste is ecologically beneficial. Employing such materials to produce adsorbents is a smart platform for applications in wastewater purification. Lignin is one of the most plentiful natural biopolymers in the world. Its macromolecular structure possesses phenolic and carboxyl groups that can capture heavy metals and dyes. Lignin can be chemically and physically modified to generate adsorbent materials with enhanced capacity to remove pollutants from wastewater. In this work, lignin has been used as a natural resource to synthesize metal oxide‐based nanoadsorbents. Abstract:Fast and efficient removal of organic dyes from industrial wastewater by practical and cost-effective adsorption method has been in the spotlight. Herein, lignosulfonate-based hybrid hydrogel adsorbents (HPAS) were one-pot synthesized via cross-linking reaction with lignosulfonate amine, hyperbranched polyamide amine, and polyethylene glycol diglycidyl ether, then were characterized by FTIR, XPS, and SEM measurements. The adsorption capacity of HPAS for separate organic dyes and metallic ion were further studied. HPAS with hierarchical porous structures showed ultra-high capacity for dye removal, especially for Congo red (CR). The actual maximum adsorption capacity of CR can reach 5120 mg/g, when the initial concentration of CR is 6000 mg/L, natural pH, temperature is 298 K, and the amount of adsorbent HPAS-4 is 0.8 g/L. Simultaneously, HPAS-4 also showed a relatively strong adsorption performance for Cu(II); the maximum uptake capacity was obtained at 249 mg/g (initial Cu(II) concentration = 100 mg/L). After 5 adsorption–desorption cycles, HPAS-4 still maintains a high adsorption capacity for CR and Cu(II). The CR and Cu(II) adsorption mechanisms by HPAS were further validated using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The adsorption of CR and Cu(II) by HPAS was a spontaneous endothermic process, which conforms to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir adsorption model. The key mechanism of CR adsorption process is H-bond interactions due to abundant N and O atoms in HPAS accompanied with electrostatic attraction and π-π stacking interaction. The adsorption of Cu(II) on HPAS is mainly determined by the complexation/chelation accompanied with precipitation of copper derivatives on HPAS. The results of this study provide a new method for the preparation of high-performance biomass-based adsorbents in the field of wastewater treatment.

Abstract:The existence of organic dyes wastewater had caused serious harm to the environment and human beings. Herein, in this study, a simple and efficient method was selected to synthesize sodium alginate gel beads adsorbent (CPS-Bead) with porous structure and high adsorption performance. Interestingly, the addition of polyamino-modified 3D carbon materials (GO-CNT) enhanced the related properties of gel beads. Moreover, the well-designed adsorbent was used to remove methylene blue (MB), malachite green (MG), crystal violet (CV), and congo red (CR) from dyes wastewater. The results showed that the adsorption capacity of CPS-Bead on MB, MG, CV and CR could reach the highest of 2191.39 mg/g, 2201.69 mg/g, 1669.11 mg/g and 2096.04 mg/g at 318 K, respectively. The kinetic behavior and the isotherm behavior of CPS-Bead was more consistent with the nonlinear model of pseudo-second-order dynamics and the Langmuir isotherm model, and the thermodynamic data showed that the adsorption process of the four dyes was automatic. In addition, CPS-Bead also demonstrated excellent adsorption performance in cyclic experiments, selectivity experiments and adsorption column experiments, which could selectively and continuously adsorb different dyes. Overall, the prepared gel beads not only showed outstanding adsorption capacity, but also the had an excellent reusability, besides, CPS-Bead had great potential industrial applications.

Abstract:In the process of biodegradation of azo dye, redox mediators (RMs) were found to significantly enhance the removal efficiency. In this work, biodegradable RMs deriving from lignin-based monomers were prepared via peroxidation to investigate whether similar chemicals present in lignin-rich streams from biorefineries could be used for biological treatment of azo dyes. The as-prepared RMs were characterized by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), gas chromatography-mass spectrometer (GC–MS), cyclic voltammetry and electron paramagnetic resonance, and the degradation metabolites were analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The induction of RMs accelerated the extracellular electron transfer, resulting efficient methyl orange (MO) decolorization. The decolorization efficiency of MO motivated by the products of vanillin peroxidation were increased from 20% to 95% in 12 h. Moreover, the products deriving from syringaldehyde peroxidation increased the efficiency from 40% to 85% in 24 h. The degradation results of the two RMs were well fitted by zero-order and first-order kinetic models. Under saline condition, the strain still remained a high and stable removal efficiency to MO in the presence of RMs, making it acceptable to be applied in the practical wastewater. The extracellular electron transfers and metabolic products were explored to unveil the mechanisms of enhancement. This study could provide a new route for the functional utilization of lignin-resource and a theoretical guidance for efficient biodegradation of azo dye wastewater.

Abstract:Lignin, a byproduct of the wood-pulping industry, is mostly treated as a noncommercialized waste product. Therefore, it is significant to study its potential for the conversion of this renewable and sustainable resource into high-valued chemicals and materials. In this study, a renewable lignin-based material with high performance in wastewater treatment has been explored on account of its satisfactory properties and being environmentally friendly. Herein, lignin hollow microspheres (LHM) were facilely prepared from esterified organosolv lignin with maleic anhydride (MA) via self-assembly in the mixed tetrahydrofuran-Fe3O4 nanoparticles aqueous media. Moreover, the magnetic lignin spheres (MLS) were also successfully fabricated by introducing Fe3O4 nanoparticles. The structural changes of esterified lignin polymers were identified and morphology and property of obtained LHM and MLS were characterized by means of TEM, SEM, VSM and FT-IR In addition, the adsorption capacities of MLS for methylene blue and Rhodamine B from aqueous solutions were also comparatively investigated. It was observed from SEM and TEM images that the LHM from larch lignin exhibited uniform spherical and dense surface, but that from poplar lignin was not rigid enough to keep the perfect spherical shape and partially collapsed. The adsorption capacity results showed that the MLS from larch lignin exhibited better adsorption properties for methylene blue (31.23 mg/g) and Rhodamine B (17.62 mg/g) than that from poplar lignin (25.95 and 15.79 mg/g, respectively). Simultaneously, the adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherm experiments indicated that the data were agreed well with the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir model, respectively. Moreover, after three cycles of desorption, the removal efficiencies of the MLS from larch and poplar lignin could still reach more than 98% and 96%, respectively. Therefore, the developed magnetic lignin-based hollow microspheres has shown a great potential as a low-cost, highly adsorptive and reusable adsorbent for the applications in the wastewater treatments.
