Abstract:Genital size and shape are condition‐dependent: both traits are impacted by diet, but only size is affected by genetic condition (inbreeding). The contrasting effects of inbreeding on these two traits likely reflect underlying genetic architecture that has been shaped by past selection. Overall, our results suggest that male genitals can be condition‐dependent much like other sexual characters. The male genitals of internal fertilisers evolve rapidly and divergently, and sexual selection is generally responsible for this. Many sexually selected traits are condition‐dependent—with their expression dependent upon the resources available to be allocated to them—as revealed by genetic or environmental manipulations of condition. However, it is not clear whether male genitals are also condition‐dependent. Here we manipulate condition in two ways (via inbreeding and diet) to test the condition‐dependence of the genital arch of Drosophila simulans. We found that genital size but not genital shape suffered from inbreeding depression, whereas genital size and shape were affected by dietary manipulation of condition. The differential effects of these treatments likely reflect underlying genetic architecture that has been shaped by past selection: inbreeding depression is only expected when traits have a history of directional selection, while diet impacts traits regardless of historical selection. Nonetheless, our results suggest genitals can be condition‐dependent like other sexually selected traits.

Does What You Eat Affect How You Mate? Disentangling the Interactions Between Diet-Induced Phenotypic Plasticity and Adult Reproductive Strategies in Black Soldier Flies

Abstract:Phenotypic plasticity enables organisms to response to environmental variations by generating a range of phenotypes from a single genotype. In holometabolous insects, traits that influence larval plasticity may hold relevance for adult life history strategies. We present a comprehensive investigation into phenotypic plasticity in black soldier flies, a species known for its efficient waste-to-biomass conversion in the larval stage. Here, we document adult sex-specific plastic responses and reproductive strategies shaped by larval diets. We examined traits including adult body size, reproductive organ development, sperm length, mating behaviours, egg production and other life history parameters across different treatments. Our findings reveal notable sex-specific differences in phenotypic plasticity, with females showing increased plasticity in reproductive investment. Furthermore, males and females differed starkly in allometric growth and weight ratio of reproductive organs. Diets that facilitated longer male lifespans also prompted earlier male emergence suggesting an interplay between lifespan and degree of protandry. This maximizes the overlap of male and female lifespans, thereby enhancing mating success in diverse environmental conditions. Our results reveal plastic responses in mating behaviours, where diets producing smaller adults, smaller reproductive organs, and shorter sperm correlated with significantly enhanced mating effort and performance. This study highlights the complex interactions between nutrition, development, and reproductive strategies, and has significant implications for the insect bioconversion industries.

Sex-specific differences in nutrient regulation in a capital breeding caterpillar, Spodoptera litura (Fabricius)

Abstract:Nutrient requirements by male and female insects are likely to differ, but relatively little is known regarding how sexes differ in their regulation of macronutrient acquisition. The present study reports the results from a laboratory experiment in which behavioural and physiological components of nutrient regulation were compared between male and female caterpillars of Spodoptera litura (Fabricius). When provided with choices between two nutritionally complementary foods (one is a protein-biased diet and the other a carbohydrate-biased diet), both males and females adjusted their food selection to defend an intake target. However, the composition of diet preferred by the two differed, with females selecting significantly more protein than males with no difference in carbohydrate intake between the two. When confined to single diets with varying mixtures of protein and carbohydrate [P:C ratios, expressed as the percentage of diet by dry mass: protein 42%:carbohydrate 0% (p42:c0), p35:c7, p28:c14, p21:c21, p14:c28, p7:c35], females consumed more macronutrients than did males across on all P:C diets except the extremely carbohydrate-biased diet (p7:c35). Under both choice and no-choice feeding condition, such sex differences in nutrient intake were not expressed until late in the feeding stage of the final stadium. Sexes also differed in post-ingestive utilization of ingested nutrients. Females utilized ingested protein for body growth with greater efficiency compared to males, presumably reflecting provisioning their adult needs for protein to develop eggs, whereas males were more efficient at depositing lipids from carbohydrate intake than females.

Abstract:The effects of different temperatures and diets experienced during distinct life stages are not necessarily similar. The silver-spoon hypothesis predicts that developing under favorable conditions will always lead to better performing adults under all adult conditions. The environment-matching hypothesis suggests that a match between developmental and adult conditions will lead to the best performing adults. Similar to the latter hypothesis, the beneficial-acclimation hypothesis suggests that either developing or acclimating as adults to the test temperature will improve later performance under such temperature. We disentangled here between the effect of growth, adult, and mating conditions (temperature and diet) on reproduction in the red flour beetle (Tribolium castaneum), in reference to the reproduction success rate, the number of viable offspring produced, and the mean offspring mass 13 days after mating. The most influential stage affecting reproduction differed between the diet and temperature experiments: adult temperature vs. parental growth diet. Generally, a yeast-rich diet or warmer temperature improved reproduction, supporting the silver-spoon hypothesis. However, interactions between life stages made the results more complex, also fitting the environment-matching hypothesis. Warm growth temperature positively affected reproduction success, but only when adults were kept under the same warm temperature. When the parental growth and adult diets matched, the mean offspring mass was greater than in a mismatch between the two. Additionally, a match between warm adult temperature and warm offspring growth temperature led to the largest offspring mass. These findings support the environment-matching hypothesis. Our results provide evidence for all these hypotheses and demonstrate that parental effects and plasticity may be induced by temperature and diet.

Larval protein restriction interacts with adult diet to increase fitness in an outbred multiparent population

Abstract:Developmental conditions including temperature, diet, and parasites can shape adult fitness phenotypes in many species. Studies typically focus on the additive effects of early-life and adult life conditions on life history response in the context of competing models of developmental plasticity (i.e. environmental matching and silver spoon). These models continue to yield mixed results in the same or different species. Here, we characterize interaction effects of larval vs adult diet on lifespan and fecundity in a high diversity outbred population of . We compare fitness proxies of matched vs mismatched early-to-late nutritional conditions differing in protein content. Diet interactions significantly affected both traits, albeit differently. We find no consistent evidence for either model. Rather, several patterns emerged including age and sex effects, survival differences in the post-median life phase, regime-specific timing of peak fecundity, and substantial fecundities in older post-median flies. Surprisingly, lower adult protein delayed egg-laying by about 2 weeks, compared to treatments with higher protein in adult diet. Our results underscore the extent to which adult life history expression depends significantly on developmental conditions. Results further highlight the need for assessing possible adult life phase patterns which might potentially reveal trade-offs between adult life stages than traits.

Mapping sex differences in the effects of protein and carbohydrates on lifespan and reproduction in Drosophila melanogaster: is measuring nutrient intake essential?

Abstract:Abstract Understanding how diet affects reproduction and survival is a central aim in evolutionary biology. Although this relationship is likely to differ between the sexes, we lack data relating diet to male reproductive traits. One exception to this general pattern is Drosophila melanogaster, where male dietary intake was quantified using the CA pillary FE eder (CAFE) method. However, CAFE feeding reduces D. melanogaster survival and reproduction, so may distort diet-fitness outcomes. Here, we use the Geometric Framework of Nutrition to create nutrient landscapes that map sex-specific relationships between protein, carbohydrate, lifespan and reproduction in D. melanogaster. Rather than creating landscapes with consumption data, we map traits onto the nutrient composition of forty agar-based diets, generating broad coverage of nutrient space. We find that male and female lifespan was maximised on low protein, high carbohydrate blends (~ 1 P :15.9 C ). This nutrient ratio also maximised male reproductive rates, but females required more protein to maximise daily fecundity (1 P :1.22 C ). These results are consistent with CAFE assay outcomes. However, the approach employed here improved female fitness relative to CAFE assays, while effects of agar versus CAFE feeding on male fitness traits depended on the nutrient composition of experimental diets. We suggest that informative nutrient landscapes can be made without measuring individual nutrient intake and that in many cases, this may be preferable to using the CAFE approach. The most appropriate method will depend on the question and species being studied, but the approach adopted here has the advantage of creating nutritional landscapes when dietary intake is hard to quantify.

Abstract:We investigated the effects of resource quality and parental provisioning in the phenotypic expression of sexual and non‐sexual traits in a rainforest dung beetle, Onthophagus babirussa (Eschscholtz, 1822) from Singapore. 'Higher quality' dung resulted in offspring exhibiting greater phenotypic fitness, and mother beetles compensated dung quality with the dung amount when using 'lower quality' dung. Genotype‐by‐environment interactions between parental lines (genotype) and dung type (environment) affected male body size and horn length only, suggesting sex‐specific variance in plasticity associated with sexually selected precopulatory traits. Reproductive traits that mediate differential fitness associated with mate acquisition and fertilisation success are often strongly linked to the overall condition. We investigated the effects of resource quality and parental provisioning in the phenotypic expression of sexual and non‐sexual traits in a rainforest dung beetle, Onthophagus c.f. babirussa (Eschscholtz, 1822) from Singapore. F1 individuals were reared from wild‐caught beetles and paired up to produce offspring (F2), and F2 larvae from the same F1 parents were reared on two dung substrates (herbivore and omnivore) in a full‐sib design. Sexual traits displayed greater phenotypic variation in response to dung resource quality, with the precopulatory trait (horn length) responding more than the postcopulatory trait (testes weight). Notably, genotype‐by‐environment interactions between parental lines (genotype) and dung type (environment) affected male body size and horn length only, suggesting sex‐specific variance in plasticity associated with sexually selected precopulatory traits. Dung type had significant effects on all measured traits. Offspring that were provisioned higher quality resource (omnivore dung) had larger absolute and relative trait values. Parental lines only significantly affected female body size but none of the male traits, suggesting an important role of environment and resource partitioning in determining precopulatory success of male offspring. Parental provisioning of larval resource varied with resource quality and brood sequence. Parents provisioned more dung when herbivore dung was presented than when they were given omnivore dung and provisioned more dung for their earlier broods when using herbivore dung but not omnivore dung. This suggests a trade‐off between early offspring fitness and resource quality. We tested directly for genotype‐by‐environment (G × E) interactions in the expression of several morphological traits relevant to dung beetle fitness and documented that offspring with similar phenotypes may result from completely different parental resource allocation strategies. We discuss the importance of studying parental investment on trait variation and its implications on dung beetle ecology.

Abstract:Sex-specific trait expression represents a striking dimension of morphological variation within and across species. The mechanisms instructing sex-specific organ development have been well studied in a small number of insect model systems, suggesting striking conservation in some parts of the somatic sex determination pathway while hinting at possible evolutionary lability in others. However, further resolution of this phenomenon necessitates additional taxon sampling, particularly in groups in which sexual dimorphisms have undergone significant elaboration and diversification. Here, we functionally investigate the somatic sex determination pathway in the gazelle dung beetle Digitonthophagus gazella, an emerging model system in the study of the development and evolution of sexual dimorphisms. We find that RNA interference (RNAi) targeting transformer1 (tra1) caused chromosomal females to develop morphological traits largely indistinguishable from those normally only observed in males, and that tra1RNAi is sufficient to induce splicing of the normally male-specific isoform of doublesex in chromosomal females, while leaving males unaffected. Further, intersexRNAi was found to phenocopy previously described RNAi phenotypes of doublesex in female but not male beetles. These findings match predictions derived from models of the sex determination cascade as developed largely through studies in Drosophila melanogaster. In contrast, transformer2RNAi resulted in larval mortality and was not sufficient to affect doublesex splicing, whereas RNAi targeting Sex-lethal and two putative orthologs of hermaphrodite yielded no obvious phenotypic modifications in either males or females, raising the possibility that the function of a subset of sex determination genes may be derived in Diptera and thus non-representative of their roles in other holometabolous orders. Our results help illuminate how the differential evolutionary lability of the somatic sex determination pathway has contributed to the extraordinary morphological diversification of sex-specific trait expression found in nature.

Abstract:Abstract Sexual conflict plays a key role in the dynamics of adaptive evolution in sexually reproducing populations, and theory suggests an important role for variance in resource acquisition in generating or masking sexual conflict over fitness and life history traits. Here, I used a quantitative genetic genotype x environment experiment in Drosophila melanogaster, to test the theoretical prediction that variance in resource acquisition mediates variation in sex-specific component fitness. Holding larval conditions constant, I found that adult nutritional environments characterized by high protein content resulted in reduced survival of both sexes compared to an environment of lower protein content, and lower male reproductive success. Despite reduced mean fitness of both sexes in high protein environments, I found a sex*treatment interaction for the relationship between resource acquisition and fitness; estimates of the adaptive landscape indicate males were furthest from their optimum resource acquisition level in high protein environments, and females were furthest in low protein environments. Expression of genetic variance in resource acquisition and survival was highest for each sex in the environment it was best adapted to, although the treatment effects on expression of genetic variance eroded in the path from resource acquisition to total fitness. Cross-sex genetic correlations were strongly positive for resource acquisition, survival, and total fitness, and negative for mating success, although estimation error was high for all. These results demonstrate that environmental effects on resource acquisition can have predictable consequences for the expression of sex-specific genetic variance, but also that these effects of resource acquisition can erode through the life history.

Male larval nutrition in Choristoneura rosaceana (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae): an important factor in reproductive success

Abstract:This study examines how Choristoneura rosaceana male quality, as determined by larval diet, age and mating history, affects the reproductive success of both sexes. While the size of the spermatophore produced at first mating increased linearly with male age, the frequency of mating was significantly higher for middle-aged males (2–4 days old) than younger (0–2 days old) or older (6–8 days old) individuals, when both sexes were fed on artificial diet. However, the duration of copulation was longer in couples with older than younger males. The observed age-related changes in spermatophore size had no significant effect on female longevity, fecundity or fertility, suggesting no direct relationship between male investment and spermatophore size under these experimental conditions. Different larval food sources (artificial diet, maple and hazelnut) did not affect the proportion of 2-day-old virgin males that mated; however, the proportion that remated was significantly higher for males reared on high-quality food (maple and artificial diet) than those on hazelnut, a poorer food source. There was a 5-fold decline in spermatophore size between the first and second matings on all diets, but female reproductive output was reduced by only 25%. In contrast, while the first spermatophore produced by males on hazelnut was 1.5 times smaller than those produced on maple and artificial diet, the fecundity of their mates was 40% less than those mated with high-quality virgin males. These results provide additional support to the idea that spermatophore size is not a valuable indicator of male quality. Most tethered females placed in the field during the first flight period mated with virgin males (based on the size of the spermatophore), suggesting that female choice exists in this species. These results are discussed in relation to the incidence of polyandry in naturally occurring populations of Choristoneura and the potential use of size and/or chemical cues by females to assess male quality.

Abstract:Phenotypic plasticity is thought to be an important driver of diversification and adaptation to environmental variation, yet the genomic mechanisms mediating plastic trait development and evolution remain poorly understood. The Scarabaeinae, or true dung beetles, are a species-rich clade of insects recognized for their highly diversified nutrition-responsive development including that of cephalic horns—evolutionarily novel, secondary sexual weapons that exhibit remarkable intra- and interspecific variation. Here, we investigate the evolutionary basis for horns as well as other key dung beetle traits via comparative genomic and developmental assays. We begin by presenting chromosome-level genome assemblies of three dung beetle species in the tribe Onthophagini (> 2500 extant species) including Onthophagus taurus , O . sagittarius , and Digitonthophagus gazella . Comparing these assemblies to those of seven other species across the order Coleoptera identifies evolutionary changes in coding sequence associated with metabolic regulation of plasticity and metamorphosis. We then contrast chromatin accessibility in developing head horn tissues of high- and low-nutrition O . taurus males and females and identify distinct cis -regulatory architectures underlying nutrition- compared to sex-responsive development, including a large proportion of recently evolved regulatory elements sensitive to horn morph determination. Binding motifs of known and new candidate transcription factors are enriched in these nutrition-responsive open chromatin regions. Our work highlights the importance of chromatin state regulation in mediating the development and evolution of plastic traits, demonstrates gene networks are highly evolvable transducers of environmental and genetic signals, and provides new reference-quality genomes for three species that will bolster future developmental, ecological, and evolutionary studies of this insect group. Phenotypic plasticity is the ability of a single genotype to produce multiple phenotypes in response to environmental variation and thus represents an important evolutionary mechanism for organismal adaptation and diversification. In this study, we investigate the genomic basis for phenotypic plasticity in Onthophagini horned dung beetles, a highly diverse (~2500 species) tribe of beetles renowned for their developmental plasticity. We assemble and annotate chromosome-level genome assembles for three Onthophagini species and identify examples of gene family and coding sequence evolution potentially associated with nutrition-responsiveness in this insect group. When then compare chromatin conformation underlying head horn development and specification in Onthophagus taurus , a species with dramatic nutrition- and sex-based differences in horn shape. We find chromatin accessibility likely plays a critical role in specifying nutritional and sexual horn dimorphisms in this species. Further, we show nutrition- and sex-responsive horn development are controlled by largely distinct, rather than shared, regulatory architectures, and the acquisition of lineage-specific regulatory elements may have played an outsized role in the evolution of nutrition-responsive development of this trait. Our results highlight the significance of chromatin accessibility and regulatory element activity in the regulation of plastic phenotypes and the highly-evolvable nature of developmental gene networks.

Using Topic Hierarchies with Privileged Information to Improve Context-Aware Recommender Systems

Abstract:Recommender systems are designed to assist individuals to identify items of interest in a set of options. A context-aware recommender system makes recommendations by incorporating available contextual information into the recommendation process. One of the major challenges in context-aware recommender systems research is the lack of automatic methods to obtain contextual information for these systems. Considering this scenario, in this paper, we propose to use contextual information from topic hierarchies to improve the performance of context-aware recommender systems. Three different types of topic hierarchies are constructed by using the LUPI-based Incremental Hierarchical Clustering method: a topic hierarchy using only a traditional bag-of-words, a second topic hierarchy using a bag-of-words of named entities and a third topic hierarchy using both information. We evaluate the contextual information in four context-aware recommender systems. The empirical results demonstrate that by using topic hierarchies we can provide better recommendations.
Interacting phenotypic plasticities: Do male and female responses to the sociosexual environment interact to determine fitness?

Abstract:Abstract Socially induced plasticity in reproductive effort is a widely documented phenomenon. However, few empirical studies have examined how male and female plastic responses to the social environment might interact in determining fitness outcomes. In field crickets, Teleogryllus oceanicus, males respond to rival song by increasing expenditure on seminal fluid proteins that enhance competitive fertilization success at the cost of reduced embryo survival. It remains unknown whether plastic responses in females could moderate the effects of male competitiveness on offspring performance. Here we used a fully factorial design to explore the interacting effects on fitness of male and female plasticity to the sociosexual environment. We found that female crickets exposed to male song increased the number of eggs produced during early life reproduction, which came at a cost of reduced offspring size. There was evidence, albeit weak, that interacting effects of male and female sociosexual environment contributed to variation in the hatching success of eggs laid by females. Lifetime offspring production was unaffected by the sociosexual environments to which upstream male and female plastic responses were made. Our data offer a rare test of the theoretical expectation that male and female plasticities should interact in their effects on female fitness.

Abstract:Adaptive changes in organ size and physiology occur in most adult animals, but how these changes are regulated is not well understood. Previous research found that mating in Drosophila females drives not only increases in gut size and stem cell proliferation but also alters feeding behavior, intestinal gene expression, and whole-body lipid storage, suggesting altered gut metabolism. Here, we show that mating dramatically alters female gut metabolism and digestive function. In addition to promoting a preference for a high-protein diet, mating also altered levels of TCA cycle intermediates and fatty acids in the gut, increased total gut lipids and protein, reduced relative carbohydrate levels, and enhanced the efficiency of protein digestion relative to carbohydrate digestion. The expression of genes that mediate each of these metabolic processes was similarly altered. In addition, we noted the mating-dependent downregulation of oxidative stress response and autophagy genes. Mating-dependent increases in ecdysone signaling played an important role in re-programming many, but not all, of these changes in the female gut. This study contributes to our understanding of how steroid signaling alters gut physiology to adapt to the demands of reproduction.

Abstract:Mosquitoes rely on their microbiota for B vitamin synthesis. We previously found that Aedes aegypti third-instar larvae cleared of their microbiota were impaired in their development, notably due to a lack of folic acid (vitamin B9). In this study, we found that diet supplementation using a cocktail of seven B vitamins did not improve mosquito developmental success, but rather had a significant impact on the sex-ratio of the resulting adults, with an enrichment of female mosquitoes emerging from B vitamin-treated larvae. A transcriptomic analysis of male and female larvae identified some sex-specific regulated genes upon vitamin treatment. When treating germ-free larvae with individual B vitamins, we detected a specific toxic effect related to biotin (vitamin B7) exposure at high concentrations. We then provided germ-free larvae with varying biotin doses and showed that males are sensitive to biotin toxicity at a lower concentration than females. Gnotobiotic larvae exposed to controlled low bacterial counts or with bacteria characterized by slower growth, show a male-enriched adult population, suggesting that males require less bacteria-derived nutrients than females. These findings shed new light on sex-specific nutritional requirements and toxicity thresholds during the development of insect larvae, which impact the sex ratio of adults.

Abstract:Evolutionary responses to selection can be complicated when there is substantial nonadditivity, which limits our ability to extrapolate from simple models of selection to population differentiation and speciation. Studies of Drosophila melanogaster indicate that lifespan and the rate of senescence are influenced by many genes that have environment- and sex-specific effects. These studies also demonstrate that interactions among alleles (dominance) and loci (epistasis) are common, with the degree of interaction differing between the sexes and among environments. However, little is known about the genetic architecture of lifespan or mortality rates for organisms other than D. melanogaster. We studied genetic architecture of differences in lifespan and shapes of mortality curves between two populations of the seed beetle, Callosobruchus maculatus (South India and Burkina Faso populations). These two populations differ in various traits (such as body size and adult lifespan) that have likely evolved via host-specific selection. We found that the genetic architecture of lifespan differences between populations differs substantially between males and females; there was a large maternal effect on male lifespan (but not on female lifespan), and substantial dominance of long-life alleles in females (but not males). The large maternal effect in males was genetically based (there was no significant cytoplasmic effect) likely due to population differences in maternal effects genes that influence lifespan of progeny. Rearing host did not affect the genetic architecture of lifespan, and there was no evidence that genes on the Y-chromosome influence the population differences in lifespan. Epistatic interactions among loci were detectable for the mortality rate of both males and females, but were detectable for lifespan only after controlling for body size variation among lines. The detection of epistasis, dominance, and sex-specific genetic effects on C. maculatus lifespan is consistent with results from line cross and quantitative trait locus studies of D. melanogaster.

Abstract:Mosquitoes rely on their microbiota for B vitamin synthesis. We previously found that Aedes aegypti third-instar larvae cleared of their microbiota were impaired in their development, notably due to a lack of folic acid (vitamin B9). In this study, we found that diet supplementation using a cocktail of seven B vitamins did not improve mosquito developmental success, but rather had a significant impact on the sex-ratio of the resulting adults, with an enrichment of female mosquitoes emerging from B vitamin-treated larvae. Abstract:The relationship between feeding ecology and sexual dimorphism is examined in a speciose South African monkey beetle clade. We test whether feeding and mating at a fixed site (embedding guild) is associated with greater levels of sexual dimorphism and possibly sexual selection than species using unpredictable feeding resources (non-embedding guild). Sexual dimorphism was measured using a point scoring system for hind leg and colour across the two feeding guilds for >50% of the regional fauna. Quantification of hind leg dimorphism using a scoring system and allometric scaling were used to identify traits subject to sexual selection. Feeding guild had a significant effect on hind leg dimorphism, with embedders having high and non-embedders low scores. The sessile and defendable distribution of females on stable platform flowers may favour contests and associated hind leg weaponry. In contrast, degree of colour dimorphism between the sexes was not associated with any particular feeding guild, and may serve to reduce male conflict and combat. Embedder males had high proportions (∼76%) of species with positive allometric slopes for almost all hind leg traits. For male non-embedders, only ∼37% of species showed positive scaling relationships. Phylogenetic data, in conjunction with behavioural data on the function of leg weaponry and visual signalling among males is needed to better understand the link between sexual dimorphism and sexual selection in the radiation of the monkey beetles.

Abstract:The developmental environment can potentially alter the adult social environment and influence traits targeted by sexual selection such as body size. In this study, we manipulated larval density in male and female Drosophila melanogaster, which results in distinct adult size phenotypes-high (low) densities for small (large) adults-and measured sexual selection in experimental groups consisting of adult males and females from high, low, or a mixture of low and high larval densities. Overall, large adult females (those reared at low larval density) had more matings, more mates and produced more offspring than small females (those reared at high larval density). The number of offspring produced by females was positively associated with their number of mates (i.e. there was a positive female Bateman gradient) in social groups where female size was experimentally varied, likely due to the covariance between female productivity and mating rate. For males, we found evidence that the larval environment affected the relative importance of sexual selection via mate number (Bateman gradients), mate productivity, paternity share, and their covariances. Mate number and mate productivity were significantly reduced for small males in social environments where males were of mixed sizes, versus social environments where all males were small, suggesting that social heterogeneity altered selection on this subset of males. Males are commonly assumed to benefit from mating with large females, but in contrast to expectations we found that in groups where both the male and female size varied, males did not gain more offspring per mating with large females. Collectively, our results indicate sex-specific effects of the developmental environment on the operation of sexual selection, via both the phenotype of individuals, and the phenotype of their competitors and mates.

Abstract:Abstract Dietary macronutrients regulate lifespan and ageing, yet little is known about their evolutionary effects. Here, we examine the evolutionary response of these traits in decorated crickets (Gryllodes sigillatus) maintained on diets varying in caloric content and protein-to-carbohydrate ratio. After 37 generations, each population was split: half remained on the evolution diet and half switched to a standardized diet. Crickets lived longed and aged slower when evolving on high calorie (both sexes) and carbohydrate-biased (females only) diets and had lower baseline mortality on high calorie (females only) diets. However, on the standardized diet, crickets lived longer when evolving on high calorie diets (both sexes), aged slower on high calorie (females only) and carbohydrate-biased (both sexes) diets and had lower baseline mortality on high-calorie (males only) and protein-biased (both sexes) diets. Lifespan was longer and baseline mortality lower when provided the evolution versus the standardized diet but ageing rate was comparable. Moreover, lifespan was longer, ageing slower (females only) and baseline mortality lower (males only) compared to our evolved baseline suggesting varying degrees of dietary adaptation. Collectively, we show dietary components influence the evolution of lifespan and ageing in different ways and highlight the value of combining experimental evolution with nutritional geometry.
