Abstract:Distracted driving adversely impacts drivers' decision-making and leads to safety-critical events (SCEs). Early detection of driver distraction is critical to prevent traffic crashes by providing warning messages to drivers and the surrounding vehicles. This study harnesses real-time multidimensional data collected through sensors that examine the variations in driver biometrics, vehicle kinematics, and roadway surroundings in different driving scenarios conducted on a Multimodal Virtual Reality Simulator. The driving behaviors of the study participants were examined under various visual detection response tasks of increasing complexity. The study classifies driving behaviors on a 5-level ordinal scale by estimating a Panel Ordered Logit Model, Random Forest, and Artificial Neural Network, using real-time volatilities in driver biometric signals, vehicle speed and acceleration, and roadway surroundings. The study results reveal that the driver gaze and the coefficients of variation in vehicle speed, driver eye movements, vehicular distances from the lane centerline, and the following vehicle significantly impact distracted driving. The study's findings align with the principles of the safe systems approach by emphasizing the development of proactive safety measures in the form of feedback and warning the driver and surrounding vehicles of a potential distracted driving event, helping to foster safer user behavior and vehicles.

Effects of Mobile Computer Terminal Configuration and Level of Driving Control on Police Officers' Performance and Workload

Abstract:Objective: The objective of this study was to assess police officers' performance and workload in using two mobile computer terminal (MCT) configurations under operational and tactical driving conditions. Background: Crash reports have identified in-vehicle distraction to be a major cause of law enforcement vehicle crashes. The MCT has been found to be the most frequently used in-vehicle technology and the main source of police in-vehicle distraction. Method: Twenty police officers participated in a driving simulator-based assessment of driving behavior, task completion time, and perceived workload with two MCT configurations under operational and tactical levels of driving. Results: The findings revealed that using the MCT configuration with speech-based data entry and head-up display location while driving improved driving performance, decreased task completion time, and reduced police officers' workload as compared to the current MCT configuration used by police departments. Officers had better driving but worse secondary task performance under the operational driving as compared to the tactical driving condition. Conclusion: This study provided an empirical support for use of an enhanced MCT configuration in police vehicles to improve police officers' safety and performance. In addition, the findings emphasize the need for more training to improve officers' tactical driving skills and multitasking behavior. Application: The findings provide guidelines for vehicle manufacturers, MCT developers, and police agencies to improve the design and implementation of MCTs in police vehicles considering input modality and display eccentricity, which are expected to increase officer and civilian safety.
Exploratory Development of Algorithms for Determining Driver Attention Status

Abstract:Objective: Varying driver distraction algorithms were developed using vehicle kinematics and driver gaze data obtained from a camera-based driver monitoring system (DMS). Background: Distracted driving characteristics can be difficult to accurately detect due to wide variation in driver behavior across driving environments. The growing availability of information about drivers and their involvement in the driving task increases the opportunity for accurately recognizing attention state. Method: A baseline for driver distraction levels was developed using a video feed of 24 separate drivers in varying naturalistic driving conditions. This initial assessment was used to develop four buffer-based algorithms that aimed to determine a driver's real-time attentiveness, via a variety of metrics and combinations thereof. Results: Of those tested, the optimal algorithm included ungrouped glance locations and speed. Notably, as an algorithm's performance of detecting very distracted drivers improved, its accuracy for correctly identifying attentive drivers decreased. Conclusion: At a minimum, drivers' gaze position and vehicle speed should be included when designing driver distraction algorithms to delineate between glance patterns observed at high and low speeds. Distraction algorithms should be designed with an understanding of their limitations, including instances in which they may fail to detect distracted drivers, or falsely notify attentive drivers. Application: This research adds to the body of knowledge related to driver distraction and contributes to available methods to potentially address and reduce occurrences. Machine learning algorithms can build on the data elements discussed to increase distraction detection accuracy using robust artificial intelligence.
Redesigning Today's Driving Automation Toward Adaptive Backup Control With Context-Based and Invisible Interfaces

Abstract:Objective: We investigated a driver monitoring system (DMS) designed to adaptively back up distracted drivers with automated driving. Background: Humans are likely inadequate for supervising today's on-road driving automation. Conversely, backup concepts can use eye-tracker DMS to retain the human as the primary driver and use computerized control only if needed. A distraction DMS where perceived false alarms are minimized and the status of the backup is unannounced might reduce problems of distrust and overreliance, respectively. Experimental research is needed to assess the viability of such designs. Methods: In a driving simulator, 91 participants either supervised driving automation (auto-hand-on-wheel vs. auto-hands-off-wheel), drove with different forms of DMS-induced backup control (eyes-only-backup vs. eyes-plus-context-backup; visible-backup vs. invisible-backup), or drove without any automation. All participants performed a visual N-back task throughout. Results: Supervised driving automation increased visual distraction and hazard non-responses compared to backup and conventional driving. Auto-hand-on-wheel improved response generation compared to auto-hands-off-wheel. Across entire driving trials, the backup improved lateral performance compared to conventional driving. Without negatively impacting safety, the eyes-plus-context-backup DMS reduced unnecessary automated control compared to the eyes-only-backup DMS conditions. Eyes-only-backup produced low satisfaction ratings, whereas eyes-plus-context-backup satisfaction was on par with automated driving. There were no appreciable negative consequences attributable to the invisible-backup driving automation. Conclusions: We have demonstrated preliminary feasibility of DMS designs that incorporate driving context information for distraction assessment and suppress their status indication. Application: An appropriately designed DMS can enable benefits for automated driving as a backup.

Abstract:<span>Driver monitoring systems (DMS) are the next generation of vehicle safety technology. Broadly, these refer to the embedded, aftermarket wearable or vehicle-mounted devices that collect observable information about the operator to make real-time assessment of their capacity to perform the driving task. Integrating biobehavioral monitoring (primarily ocular metrics) with driving performance assessments, these systems function to infer driver state in real time to identify operator conditions that negatively affect driving (such as fatigue, inattention, or distraction).We review available methods used to infer driver state, as referenced against accepted models for optimal performance. Modeling our observations on deviation from predetermined performance thresholds used to trigger graded safety alerts, we suggest that many psychoactive substances produce alterations to biobehavioral processes including attentional and motor control, which affect performance indices in a manner already arguably captured by these technologies.Using these existing frameworks, there is considerable potential to similarly catalogue the effect of many common intoxicants known to negatively affect driving ability. This will provide safety-relevant and practical biological models for the development of next-generation multimodal DMS that integrate ocular and physiological variables sensitive to the effects of common and emergent psychoactive substances.These devices have tangible potential application across all areas of transportation, including aviation, rail, and all commercial and private vehicle systems.</span>

Abstract:Many car accidents are caused by human distractions, including cognitive distractions. In-vehicle human-machine interfaces (HMIs) have evolved throughout the years, providing more and more functions. Interaction with the HMIs can, however, also lead to further distractions and, as a consequence, accidents. To tackle this problem, we propose using adaptive HMIs that change according to the mental workload of the driver. In this work, we present the current status as well as preliminary results of a user study using naturalistic secondary tasks while driving (i.e., the primary task) that attempt to understand the effects of one such interface.

In-Vehicle Human Machine Interface: Investigating the Effects of Tactile Displays on Information Presentation in Automated Vehicles

Abstract:Background: Semi-autonomous vehicles still require human drivers to take over when the automated systems can no longer perform the driving task. Objective: The goal of this study was to design and test the effects of six meaningful tactile signal types, representing six driving scenarios (i.e., navigation, speed, surrounding vehicles, over the speed limit, headway reductions, and pedestrian status) respectively, and two pattern durations (lower and higher urgencies), on drivers' perception and performance during automated driving. Methods: Sixteen volunteers participated in an experiment utilizing a medium-fidelity driving simulator presenting vibrotactile signals via 20 tactors embedded in the seat back, pan, and belt. Participants completed four separate driving sessions with 30 tactile signals presented randomly throughout each drive. Reaction times (RT), interpretation accuracy, and subjective ratings were measured. Results: Results illustrated shorter RTs and higher intuitive ratings for higher urgency patterns than lower urgency patterns. Pedestrian status and headway reduction signals were associated with shorter RTs and increased confidence ratings, compared to other tactile signal types. Lastly, among six tactile signals, surrounding vehicle and navigation signal types had the highest interpretation accuracy. Conclusion: These results will be used as preliminary data for future studies that aim to investigate the effects of meaningful tactile displays on automated vehicle takeover performance in complex situations (e.g., urban areas) where actual takeovers are required. The findings of this study will inform the design of next-generation in-vehicle human-machine interfaces.

Detecting driver distraction using stimuli-response EEG analysis

Abstract:Detecting driver distraction is a significant concern for future intelligent transportation systems. We present a new approach for identifying distracted driving behavior by evaluating a stimulus and response interaction with the brain signals in two ways. First, measuring the driver response through EEG by creating various types of distraction stimuli such as reading, texting, calling and using phone camera (risk odds ratio of these activities determined by NHTSA study). Second, using a survey, comparing driver's order/perception of severity of distraction with the derived distraction index from EEG bands. A 14 electrodes headset was used to record the brain signals while driving in the pilot study with two subjects and a single dry electrode headset with 13 subjects in the main study. We used a naturalistic driving study as opposed to a virtual reality driving simulator to perform the distracted driving maneuvers, consisting of over 100 short duration trials (three to five seconds) for a subject. We overcame a big challenge in EEG analysis - reducing the number of electrodes by isolating one electrode (FC5) from 14 electrode locations to identify certain distractions. Our machine learning methods achieved a mean accuracy (averaged over the subjects and tasks) of 91.54 +/- 5.23% to detect a distracted driving event and 76.99 +/- 8.63% to distinguish between the five distraction cases in our study (read, text, call, and snapshot) using a single electrode. The quantification of distracted driving detailed in this paper is necessary to guide future policies in road safety. Our system addresses the safety concerns resulting from driver distraction and aims to bring about behavioral changes in drivers.
Transitioning to multi-dimensional estimation of visual distraction and its safety effects under automated driving: A spatiotemporal and directional estimation approach

Abstract:Traditional methodologies for measuring visual distraction have been limiting in their approaches, treating distraction as a one-dimensional variable. This has been accomplished either by categorizing distraction as a binary variable or using surrogate measurements, such as reaction time in response to non-driving related tasks, which follow the procedures of measuring distraction from psychology. Furthermore, as human-vehicle interaction (HVI) under automated driving has the potential to provide safety information and bring visual distraction simultaneously, there lacks an investigation on the quantitative relationship between distraction and safety due to the restrained methodologies in measuring visual distraction. As HVI-induced driver distraction plays a critical role in determining safe driving under automated driving, a methodology is highly needed to comprehensively measure the visual distraction under automated driving so that its impact on safety can be further investigated. Therefore, sticking to the definition of visual distraction, this research aims to (1) improve the existing methodology in measuring HVI-induced driver distraction under automated driving by focusing on visual distraction and mathematically describing it from spatiotemporal and directional dimensions; (2) theoretically investigate how the quantified visual distraction influences driving safety and (3) quantify the relationship between distraction and safety with introducing the "distraction-safety" ratio. Drivers' fixation behaviors are used in quantifying visual distraction, which is measured by spatiotemporal and directional relationships between drivers' visual attention and the attention that indicates "zero distraction". Three newly added performance measures in quantifying HVI-induced visual distraction are real-time magnitudes, real-time directions, and intensities (cumulation of magnitudes over time). To validate the proposed methods, a verification study was conducted by recruiting drivers to test automated driving under Level 3 automation. Drivers are required to wear an eye-tracker and go through two scenarios interacting with jaywalkers where takeover actions are needed with two takeover warnings ("visual-only" and "visual & audible"). Per past studies, takeover time was measured in representing distraction level. As a result, this study confirms the validity of the proposed methods by revealing the significant and positive correlations between the measured distraction intensity and the takeover time. Discussions of the quantified visual distraction from the spatiotemporal and directional perspective further enhance the understanding of HVI-induced driver distraction under automated driving through multiple dimensions. Furthermore, this research reveals how distracted driving affects safety under automated driving through the takeover performance. Thresholds under visual distraction magnitudes and degrees that lead to traffic conflicts were identified. More importantly, a "distraction-safety" ratio that quantifies the relationship between visual distraction and safety benefits is proposed. The results suggest that the "visual & audible" is more effective in significantly enhancing safety while aggregating a significantly smaller amount of visual distraction. The contribution of this research is to re-define the methodological approach of measuring visual distraction by (1) measuring distraction multi-dimensionally and (2) establishing a "distraction-safety" system in quantitatively assessing the balance of safety benefits and the HVI-induced visual distraction magnitude under automated driving environment.

Abstract:ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) are becoming increasingly popular in on-road vehicles due to their safety, productivity, and cost savings. In the same way, off-road vehicles can benefit from ADAS systems to improve the security of drivers and workers in industrial settings. In this work, we study, design, and develop a novel security system to be integrated into industrial vehicles. This system is built to provide one-way Human Computer Interaction, from the computer to the human, so providing, through the interaction with the ADAS system, feedback to drivers about their surroundings, such as nearby workers, and thus helping to avoid collisions and prevent incidents. The study evaluates the quality of different feedback mechanisms, with the goal of designing the ADAS that produces the best User eXperience (UX). These feedback mechanisms are generated by LEDs in different display formats and colors, as well as with haptic feedback. We created a hybrid testbed using a realistic ADAS and a forklift simulator, integrating the system into a physical structure that resembles an industrial vehicle (a forklift) and used a computer-based simulation of a warehouse to gather the information from users. We performed a study with 36 people for the evaluation of the different feedback mechanisms tested, evaluating the results both from an objective point of view based on the results of the simulation, and a subjective point of view through a questionnaire and the stress of the users in each test.

Abstract:Abstract Telecom network operators face rapidly changing business needs. Due to their dependence on long product cycles they lack the ability to quickly respond to changing user demands. To spur innovation and stay competitive, network operators are investigating technological solutions with a proven track record in other application domains such as open source software projects. Open source software enables parties to learn, use, or contribute to technology from which they were previously excluded. OSS has reshaped many application areas including the landscape of operating systems and consumer software. The paradigm shift in telecommunication systems towards Software-Defined Networking introduces possibilities to benefit from open source projects. Implementing the control part of networks in software enables speedier adaption and innovation, and less dependencies on legacy protocols or algorithms hard-coded in the control part of network devices. The recently proposed concept of Network Function Virtualization pushes the softwarization of telecommunication functionalities even further down to the data plane. Within the NFV paradigm, functionality which was previously reserved for dedicated hardware implementations can now be implemented in software and deployed on generic Commercial Off-The Shelf (COTS) hardware. This paper provides an overview of existing open source initiatives for SDN/NFV-based network architectures, involving infrastructure to orchestration-related functionality. It situates them in a business process context and identifies the pros and cons for the market in general, as well as for individual actors.

Abstract:Driving is a daily routine for many individuals across the globe. This paper presents the configuration and methodologies used to transform a vehicle into a connected ecosystem capable of assessing driver physiology. We integrated an array of commercial sensors from the automotive and digital health sectors along with driver inputs from the vehicle itself. This amalgamation of sensors allows for meticulous recording of the external conditions and driving maneuvers. These data streams are processed to extract key parameters, providing insights into driver behavior in relation to their external environment and illuminating vital physiological responses. This innovative driver evaluation system holds the potential to amplify road safety. Moreover, when paired with data from conventional health settings, it may enhance early detection of health-related complications.

Abstract:The drivers' distraction plays a crucial role in road safety as it is one of the main impacting causes of road accidents. The phenomenon of distraction encompasses both psychological and environmental factors and, therefore, addressing the complex interplay contributing to human distraction in automotive is crucial for developing technologies and interventions for improving road safety. In scientific literature, different works were proposed for the distraction characterization in automotive, but there is still the lack of a univocal measure to assess the degree of distraction, nor a gold-standard tool that allows to "detect" eventual events, road traffic, and additional driving tasks that might contribute to the drivers' distraction. Therefore, the present study aimed at developing an EEG-based "Distraction index" obtained by the combination of the driver's mental workload and attention neurometrics and investigating and validating its reliability by analyzing together subjective and behavioral measures. A total of 25 licensed drivers were involved in this study, where they had to drive in two different scenarios, i.e., City and Highway, while different secondary tasks were alternatively proposed in addition to the main one to modulate the driver's attentional demand. The statistical analysis demonstrated the reliability of the proposed EEG-based distraction index in identifying the drivers' distraction when driving along different roads and traffic conditions (all p < 0.001). More importantly, the proposed index was demonstrated to be reliable in identifying which are the most impacting additional driving tasks on the drivers' distraction (all p < 0.01).

Tactile Vibrating Toolkit and Driving Simulation Platform for Driving-Related Research

Abstract:Collision warning system plays a key role in the prevention of driving distractions and drowsy driving. Previous studies have proven the advantages of tactile warnings in reducing driver's brake response time. At the same time, tactile warnings have been proved effective in take-over request (TOR) for partially autonomous vehicles. How the performance of tactile warnings can be optimized is an ongoing hot research topic in this field. Thus, the presented low-cost driving simulation software and methods are introduced to attract more researchers to take part in the investigation. The presented protocol has been divided into five sections: 1) participants, 2) driving simulation software configuration, 3) driving simulator preparation, 4) vibrating toolkit configuration and preparation, and 5) conducting the experiment. In the exemplar study, participants wore the tactile vibrating toolkit and performed an established car-following task using the customized driving simulation software. The front vehicle braked intermittently, and vibrating warnings were delivered whenever the front vehicle was braking. Participants were instructed to respond as quickly as possible to the sudden brakes of the front vehicle. Driving dynamics, such as the brake response time and brake response rate, were recorded by the simulation software for data analysis. The presented protocol offers insight into the exploration of the effectiveness of tactile warnings on different body locations. In addition to the car-following task that is demonstrated in the exemplar experiment, this protocol also provides options to apply other paradigms to the driving simulation studies by making simple software configuration without any code development. However, it is important to note that due to its affordable price, the driving simulation software and hardware introduced here may not be able to fully compete with other high-fidelity commercial driving simulators. Nevertheless, this protocol can act as an affordable and user-friendly alternative to the general high-fidelity commercial driving simulators.
Evaluation of Gesture-Based In-Vehicle Interaction: User Experience and the Potential to Reduce Driver Distraction

Abstract:Objective: We observe the effects of in-vehicle system gesture-based interaction versus touch-based interaction on driver distraction and user experience. Background: Driver distraction is a major problem for traffic safety, as it is a contributing factor to a number of accidents. Visual distraction in particular has a highly negative impact on the driver. One possibility for reducing visual driver distraction is to use new forms of interaction in the vehicle, such as gesture-based interaction. Method: In this experiment, participants drove on a motorway or in a city scenario while using touch-based interaction or gesture-based interaction. Subjective data, such as acceptance and workload, and objective data, including glance behavior, were gathered. Results: As a result, participants rated their subjective impressions of safe driving as higher when using gesture-based interaction. More specifically, acceptance and attractiveness were higher, and workload was lower. The participants performed significantly fewer glances to the display and the glances were much shorter. Conclusion: Gestures are a positive alternative for in-vehicle interaction since effects on driver distraction are less significant when compared to touch-based interaction. Application: Potential application of this research includes interaction design of typical in-vehicle information and entertainment functions.
Beyond the Dashboard: Investigating Distracted Driver Communication Preferences for ADAS

Abstract:Distracted driving is a major cause of road fatalities. With improvements in driver (in)attention detection, these distracted situations can be caught early to alert drivers and improve road safety and comfort. However, drivers may have differing preferences for the modes of such communication based on the driving scenario and their current distraction state. To this end, we present an (N=147) where videos of simulated driving scenarios were utilized to learn drivers preferences for modes of communication and their evolution with the drivers changing attention. The survey queried participants preferred modes of communication for scenarios such as collisions or stagnation at a green light. that inform the future of communication between drivers and their vehicles. We showcase the different driver preferences based on the nature of the driving scenario and also show that they evolve as the drivers distraction state changes

Abstract:Recent advances in AI and intelligent vehicle technology hold promise to revolutionize mobility and transportation, in the form of advanced driving assistance (ADAS) interfaces. Although it is widely recognized that certain cognitive factors, such as impulsivity and inhibitory control, are related to risky driving behavior, play a significant role in on-road risk-taking, existing systems fail to leverage such factors. Varying levels of these cognitive factors could influence the effectiveness and acceptance of driver safety interfaces. We demonstrate an approach for personalizing driver interaction via driver safety interfaces that are triggered based on a learned recurrent neural network. The network is trained from a population of human drivers to infer impulsivity and inhibitory control from recent driving behavior. Using a high-fidelity vehicle motion simulator, we demonstrate the ability to deduce these factors from driver behavior. We then use these inferred factors to make instantaneous determinations on whether or not to engage a driver safety interface. This interface aims to decrease a driver's speed during yellow lights and reduce their inclination to run through them.

Assessing Cognitive Distraction in the Automobile

Abstract:Objective: The objective was to establish a systematic framework for measuring and understanding cognitive distraction in the automobile. Background: Driver distraction from secondary in-vehicle activities is increasingly recognized as a significant source of injuries and fatalities on the roadway. Method: Across three studies, participants completed eight in-vehicle tasks commonly performed by the driver of an automobile. Primary, secondary, subjective, and physiological measures were collected and integrated into a cognitive distraction scale. Results: In-vehicle activities, such as listening to the radio or an audio book, were associated with a low level of cognitive workload; the conversation activities of talking to a passenger in the vehicle or conversing with a friend on a handheld or hands-free cell phone were associated with a moderate level of cognitive workload; and using a speech-to-text interfaced e-mail system involved a high level of cognitive workload. Conclusion: The research established that there are significant impairments to driving that stem from the diversion of attention from the task of operating a motor vehicle and that the impairments to driving are directly related to the cognitive workload of these in-vehicle activities. Moreover, the adoption of voice-based systems in the vehicle may have unintended consequences that adversely affect traffic safety. Application: These findings can be used to help inform scientifically based policies on driver distraction, particularly as they relate to cognitive distraction stemming from the diversion of attention to other concurrent activities in the vehicle.

Abstract:The increasing number of road accidents involving heavy vehicles due to driver drowsiness necessitates the development of advanced safety systems. This abstract presents a real-time driver-drowsiness-based electromechanical braking system designed specifically for heavy vehicles. The system uses a combination of sensors, including facial recognition cameras and fatigue monitoring sensors, to continuously monitor the driver's physiological and behavioral parameters. Machine learning algorithms analyze these data streams in real-time to identify signs of drowsiness, such as drooping eyelids, erratic steering behavior, and decreased responsiveness. Upon detecting drowsiness, the system triggers audible alerts, autonomous braking assistance, and remote monitoring and intervention. This method uses an electromechanical braking system to help stop the vehicle by determining the EAR (Eye Aspect Ratio) and LIP (Lip Aspect Ratio) using the haarcascade algorithm and Open CV. By integrating real-time drowsiness detection with proactive braking assistance, the proposed system aims to significantly reduce the risk of accidents caused by driver fatigue in heavy vehicles. When tiredness is identified, the project's implementation offers a possible way to improve road safety by warning drivers and activating braking devices.
