Abstract:We reported a 72-year-old man presented with gustatory disturbance. He lost bitter, salty, sour and sweet sensation on the left half of the tongue. No other neurologic signs were observed. Brain MRI showed the cerebral infarction in the left middle cerebellar peduncle. The lesion was suspected of affecting the gustatory tract running from the nucleus solitalius to the pontine taste area in the upper pons. The gustatory tract is generally recognized to be located medially from the medial lemniscus and the reticular formation. Our case suggests that the tract would be located laterally from the medial lemniscus and the reticular formation.

Abstract:Abstract The magnetocaloric properties of manganite oxides La 0.7 Sr 0.25 Na 0.05 Mn 1 − x Al x O 3 (LSNMAl x ) synthesized by sol-gel method were studied in detail. X-ray diffraction analyses showed a single rhombohedral phase with the R3-c space group. The inhomogeneous magnetic compartment coupled with the core-shell behavior was used to explain the magnetic properties and the evolution of the paramagnetic-ferromagnetic transition of the materials. Using a phenomenological model, the maximum values of magnetic entropy change (Δ S max ) decreased from 4.92 J kg −1 K for La 0.7 Sr 0.25 Na 0.05 MnO 3 to 3.84 J kg −1 K for La 0.7 Sr 0.25 Na 0.05 Mn 0.95 Al 0.05 O 3 upon an applied magnetic field of μ 0 H = 5 T, indicating an excellent quality of our samples as compared to many manganite oxides. The high quality of our samples was also checked by the large relative cooling power (RCP) which provides a good performance for industrial technologies in refrigeration devices.

Abstract:In the present investigation, we present the comparison of the structural, magnetic, magnetocaloric and magnetoresistance behavior of solid state and sol–gel derived La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 . X-ray diffraction together with Rietveld refinement confirms the rhombohedral structure of the synthesised samples with the R c space group. The ferromagnetic-to-paramagnetic transition temperature decreases from 360 K to 346 K for the nanocrystalline sample. The XPS measurements confirm the presence of Mn 3+ in the synthesised samples. Furthermore, the polycrystalline sample exhibits a considerable −Δ S M of 4.68 J kg −1 K −1 at 360 K for a field change of 50 kOe and a relative cooling power (RCP) of 205 J kg −1 . A −Δ S M of 1.14 J kg −1 K −1 was obtained for the nanocrystalline sample at 346 K with an RCP of 83 J kg −1 . Critical exponent analysis has also been performed on both samples to establish the universality class. Both samples exhibit a distinct metal-to-insulator transition, which increases with grain size from 187 K to 334 K as a result of grain growth and decreased grain boundary. As the grain size increases, the resistivity decreases and shifts towards high temperatures with increasing magnetic fields. The itinerant electron model (IEO) which is based on the hopping of O 2p itinerant electrons has been used to explain the resistivity behaviour of the samples. It is found that the negative magnetoresistance also increases with a decrease in grain size where the highest %MR of 26% can be observed for the nanocrystalline sample. These results make La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 a suitable candidate for multifunctional applications.

Improvement of Electromagnetic Properties at Room Temperature in La0.625Ca0.375-Sr MnO3:Ag0.2 (x = 0.09–0.15) Ceramics by Sr Doping

Abstract:In this study, facile sol-gel method was used to prepare La0.625Ca0.375-xSrxMnO3:Ag-0.2 (LCSMO:Ag-0.2, x = 0.09-0.15) polycrystalline ceramics. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) indicated an increase in grain size of LCSMO:Ag(0.)2 ceramics with orthorhombic structure as a function of x. Four-probe resistivity temperature system was employed to characterize electrical and magnetic properties of all prepared specimens. Temperature coefficient of resistivity (TCR) and magnetoresistance (MR) yielded room temperature maxima of 4.9% K-1 at 299.2 K and 17.5% at 299.1 K. The enhancement in TCR and MR was mainly attributed to Jahn-Teller (JT) distortion and double exchange (DE) effect. X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) and inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES) all confirmed the existence of silver in metallic forms and the increase of Sr content. On the other hand, satellite peaks in low temperature range of resistivity-temperature (rho-T) curves gradually weakened as Sr-doped amount increased. The fitting of rho-T curves in low-temperature region revealed that gradual vanishing of satellite peak may be due to presence of Sr, able of inhibiting various types of interactions: electron-electron, electron-phonon, and Kondolike spin-dependent scattering. Overall, room temperature TCR and MR were both optimized by Sr doping, providing further understanding of CMR mechanism and application of manganite materials in electromagnetic equipment under room temperature.

Abstract:Magnetic, electronic, and thermal transport properties of Eu0.55Sr0.45MnO3 have been experimentally studied. The compound is found to exhibit a complex magnetic behavior with the change of temperature and magnetic field. Without magnetic field, it stays in a Griffiths-like state in a wide temperature range above similar to 100 K, characterized by the presence of ferromagnetic (FM) clusters of the size of similar to 8 Mn ions, and an antiferromagnetic (AFM) state below similar to 100 K, evidenced by thermopower and heat conductivity. FM phase emerges and grows in the AFM matrix with applied field, resulting in a series of phase transitions from the paramagnetic (PM) state first to the AFM state, then to the FM and the AFM states upon cooling (similar to 0.8 T < H similar to 2.3 T). The AFM state is unstable under high fields, and the high- and low-temperature AFM transitions are depressed by the fields above similar to 1 and similar to 2.3 T, respectively. The FM transition is incomplete when the field is below similar to 1.5 T, leading to a coexistence of the FM and PM (or AFM) phases in the intermediate temperature range. A spin-glass-like behavior is observed in the AFM background below similar to 50 K. Significant response of resistance, thermopower, and heat conduction to magnetic transition, either FM or AFM transition, has been observed. Unlike the typical AFM manganites, for which usually a depression of thermal conduction occurs at the AFM state, the AFM transition in Eu0.55Sr0.45MnO3 enhances the thermal conduction. From the PM phase to the AFM phase and to the FM phase, thermal conductivity increases monotonically. A remarkable result of the present work is the different behaviors of thermopower and resistivity. The former displays a metallic behavior below a distinct temperature that is significantly lower than the metal-to-insulator transition temperature determined by resistivity. Furthermore, thermopower remains metallic while the resistivity shows up an upturn due to the AFM transition in the low-temperature range under the field of 1.5 T. Based on these data, a magnetic phase diagram is proposed.
Study of the correlation between the magnetic and electrical properties of the La0.6Sr0.4MnO3 compound

Abstract:In this work, we investigated the relationship between the electrical and magnetic properties of the superparamagnetic (SPM) La0.6Sr0.4MnO3 (S1C0) compound prepared by the sol-gel method. The (S1C0) sample displayed a ferromagnetic metallic (FMM) behavior at low temperatures and a paramagnetic semiconductor (PMSC) behavior at high temperatures. The FMM behavior was described by the Zener Double Exchange (ZDE) polynomial law containing the contributions of the electron-electron (e-e) interactions and the electron-magnon (e-m) scattering. The PMSC behavior was described by the Mott Variable Range Hopping (Mott-VRH) transport model. The semiconductor/metallic transition temperature has been approximated at the blocking temperature. The Thermal Coefficient of Resistivity (TCR), which exhibits a linear variation around ambient temperature, can be used as a calibration curve for thermometry. Thus, our sample can be considered as a good candidate for the detection of infrared radiation used in night vision bolometer technologies.

Abstract:We investigate the electrical and dielectric properties of the La 0.4 Bi 0.3 Sr 0.2 Ba 0.1 MnO 3 manganite that is prepared by the sol–gel method. Over the explored temperature interval, our compound reveals a semiconductor behavior. At elevated temperatures, the transport properties are explained by the activation of the small polaron hopping mechanism. The variable-range hopping process dominates the electrical properties at low temperatures. In the intermediate temperature, the Shklovskii–Efros variable-range hopping model describes well the transport properties. The complex impedance and modulus results reveal the existence of non-Debye relaxation phenomena. The scaling behavior of the Z ′′ spectra indicates that the relaxation time distributions are temperature independent. The dielectric permittivity behavior is related to the presence of the space charge polarization effects. Thus, Maxwell–Wagner's model is adopted to analyze the dielectric permittivity response of the material. The application of the modified Curie–Weiss law confirms the relaxor dielectric behavior of the material. The presence of confined charge carriers at the grain boundary region is confirmed by analyzing the temperature dependence of the blocking factor.

Abstract:In this work, we presented our results on the electrical and magnetoresistance characteristics of La 0.7 Ca 0.1 Pb 0.2 Mn 1-2x Al x Sn x O 3 (x equal to 0 and 0.025) prepared using the sol–gel method. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed that all samples crystallize in Rhombohedral structure with R-3c space group. In addition, to obtain further information regarding the electrical properties, we performed resistance versus temperature ρ (T) measurements under different applied magnetic fields using a standard four-probe technique. The resistivity data, represented as ρ (μ 0 H, T), indicated the presence of a transition from metal to semiconductor state. As the magnetic field increases, the maximum resistivity values decrease, and the temperature (T M-SC ) at which the transition from insulator to metal occurs rises. In the temperature range where T is less than T M–SC , the electrical resistivity ρ (T) was modeled as ρ(T) = ρ 0 + ρ 2 T 2 + ρ 4.5 T 4.5 , signifying that the transport behavior is influenced by a combination of interactions involving electron–magnon, electron–phonon and electron–electron scattering processes. Conversely, in the temperature range exceeding T M–SC , the transport mechanism was elucidated through the utilization of adiabatic small polaron hopping and variable-range hopping models. To improve understanding of the variations in the resistivity profile across the temperature range, ρ (T) was fitted using the percolation model. Additionally, research was conducted on the magnetoresistance effect (MR %). The highest magnetoresistance values are observed around the temperature T M–SC .

Abstract:The solid solutions of La0.7Ba0.3MnO3-BaTiO3 were first prepared by a solid state method. The XRD showed that the solid solutions formed when the BaTiO3 transformed from tetragonal to hexagonal phase with sintering temperature increasing. The samples with hexagonal phase exhibited relative large magneto-electric effects. For the sample sintered at 1475 degrees C, the measured maximum magneto-electric coefficient was 48.6 mV/cmOe, obtained at a frequency of 30 kHz. The first-principles calculations indicated that the magnetic-electric coupling was attributed to the off-centering of Mn ions in coplanar octahedrons in the hexagonal phase. The present results suggest a new candidate for a room temperature multiferroic material with magneto-electric effects. (C) 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.

Abstract:The La 0.9·0.1 MnO 2.9 compound were prepared by sol–gel method with the aim of obtaining a material with interesting magnetocaloric and thermoelectric properties. The prepared material crystallized in rhombohedric system with R-3c space group. In the magnetization vs. temperature graph, it is observed a paramagnetic (PM)-ferromagnetic (FM) transition with a Curie temperature T C of 209 K. From the fit of hysteresis cycle at 5 K, it is observed that the dominant contribution is ferromagnetic. A magnetic entropy change, calculated from the isothermal magnetization curves, was observed for the sample with a peak centered on T C . The total electronic density states (TDOS) show the coexistence of metallic behavior for spin-up states and semiconductor characteristic, with a Eg = 1.3 eV, for spin-down states. Thermoelectric properties analysis revealed promising behavior with ZT that assesses the efficacy of a compound in a thermoelectric field, reaching 1.1 at 420 K.

Abstract:Polycrystalline perovskite AMn1−xTiO3 with A = La0.5Pr0.2Sr0.3 (x = 0.0 and 0.1) have been prepared using solid-state reaction method. X-ray powder diffraction and Rietveld refinement revealed that all samples crystallize in a rhombohedral structure with space group R3̄$$\bar {3}$$c From M–T curve, we determined the Curie temperature, where the magnetization value decreases abruptly. The Curie temperature (TC) decreases from 280 to 123 K when the percentage of Ti increases to 10%. The values of the magnetization M(H) decrease when increasing the Ti content. Moreover, the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) was estimated in terms of isothermal entropy change (−ΔSM) using the M(T, μ0H) data and employing the thermodynamic Maxwell equation. In addition, using a phenomenological model, we determine magnetocaloric effect from the calculation of magnetization as a function of temperature under different external magnetic fields. Also, we can determine the relative cooling power (RCP) and the specific heat which varies from 2.803 to 7.354 J/(kg/K) for the undoped sample from M(T, μ0H) data at different magnetic fields theoretically.

Abstract:Single-crystalline La1−xCaxMnO3 (LCMO, x=0.3 and 0.5) nanoparticles synthesized by molten salt method, have been studied based on their microstructural characterization, magnetic and electrical transport property measurements. X-ray diffraction patterns and electron diffraction patterns reveal that all the LCMO nanoparticles crystallize in the orthorhombic perovskite structure (Pnma space group). TEM images show that the LCMO nanoparticles exhibit irregular shapes and their particle sizes are increased with increasing the annealed temperatures. The resolved (200) lattice fringes in high-resolution TEM images confirm the single crystalline nature of the LCMO nanoparticles. Magnetization measurements versus temperature show a paramagnetic – ferromagnetic transition for all the nanoparticles. Room temperature and low temperature M – H loops demonstrate that the LCMO nanoparticles exhibit ferromagnetic behavior at 5K, whereas a paramagnetic behavior at 300K. Resistivity behavior of the LCMO nanoparticles demonstrate that they exhibit a broad metal — insulator (M−I) transition, and the transition temperature shifts towards a high temperature under an external magnetic field. The magnetoresistance (MR) values of the LCMO nanoparticles were increased monotonically with decreasing the temperature below 300K, and finally reached constant values at temperatures below 100K. The MR value of the La0.5Ca0.5MnO3 nanoparticles annealed at 650°C for 3h, was found to be 77% at 50K in 5T, and 57% for the La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 nanoparticles annealed at 650°C for 3h. Such large MR values of the present LCMO nanoparticles make them ideal candidates for the spintronic devices.

Abstract:La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 (LCMO) manganite nanoparticles are synthesized via a sol-gel route at different annealed temperatures. Their structural, morphological, and magnetic properties are investigated. The X-ray diffraction patterns coupled with electron diffraction confirm that all the LCMO samples are single phase and crystallize in the orthorhombic perovskite structure (Pnma space group). The morphology of the samples observed by TEM, reveals a spherical shape with an average grain size lower than 50nm. The resolved lattice fringes in high-resolution TEM images also reveal the single crystalline nature of the LCMO nanoparticles. Magnetization measurements versus temperature under low magnetic field (0.01T) show a paramagnetic - ferromagnetic transition for all the samples. The Curie temperature (Tc) is found to be decreased with increasing the annealed temperature. A bifurcation is observed in the zero field-cooled and field-cooled magnetizations, indicating a competition between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions in the nanoparticles at low temperatures. Field-cooled hysteresis measurements suggest a cluster glasslike behavior of the nanoparticles. Room temperature and low temperature M - H loops demonstrate that all the samples exhibit ferromagnetic behavior at 5K, whereas a paramagnetic behavior at room temperature. Resistivity behavior of the LCMO samples shows that they exhibit a metal - insulator transition. Magnetoresistance of ~ 50% at the field up to 8T was observed at 2K in the LSCO samples annealed at 600°C.

Abstract:We report fabrication of nanostructured La0.67Ca0.33MnO3 (NS-LCMO) by pulsed-laser deposition on the surface of porous Al2O3. The resistance peak temperature (Tp) of the NS-LCMO increases with increasing average thickness of the films, while their Curie temperatures (Tc) remain unchanged. The coercive field of the samples increases with decreasing film thickness and its temperature dependence can be well described by Hc(T)=Hc(0)[1-(T/TB)1/2]. A large magnetoresistance and strong memory effect were observed for the NS-LCMO. The results are discussed in terms of the size effect, Coulomb blockade and magnetic tunneling effect. This work also demonstrates a new way to get nanostructured manganites.

Abstract:This research explored the temperature dependence magnetization, magnetocaloric effect, and critical field analysis of Nd0.7-xLaxSr0.3MnO3 (x = 0.0, 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3) manganites samples synthesized through solid state reaction route. The substitution of La3+ at Nd3+ site enhances the A-site average ionic radius ( ) from 1.321 Å (for x = 0.0) to 1.348 Å (for x = 0.3). An increase in reduced the internal chemical pressure inside the lattice such that the Mn-O-Mn bond angle approached 180°. In addition, an increase in Mn-O-Mn bond angle supresses the spin-lattice interaction, which consequently reduces the change in maximum magnetic entropy at the magnetic transition temperature. This implies that variation of A-site average ionic radius influences the change in maximum magnetic entropy. The critical behavior of the manganite samples was addressed based on the data of magnetization measurements around the transition temperature TC. Various techniques such as modified Arrott plot, a Kouvel–Fisher method, and critical isotherm analysis were used to measure the values of the ferromagnetic transition temperature TC, as well as the critical exponents of β, γ, and δ. The magnetic order parameter is very well obeyed with scaling relation with change in magnetic entropy.

Abstract:Manganites of rare earth elements are currently promising materials for electronics, catalysis, current sources and other applications. Their widespread demand is caused by a variety of structural and magnetic effects connected with substitutions in the sublattices of rare earth element and manganese. Substitutions of rare earth element by Sr, Ca, or Ba in manganites are known to impact the Jahn-Teller (JT) transition temperature as well as the concentration of Mn 3+ and Mn 4+ ions, which influences the efficiency of double exchange in magnetic orderings. In this work, solid solution Sm 1- x Sr x MnO 3 with low concentrations of the substituting element x = 0; 0.15; 0.25 has been studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), thermal analysis, and magnetometry. Samarium manganites have a perovskite-like orthorhombic structure ( Pbnm space group). It has been shown that the Sm-by-Sr substitution leads to a gradual increase in the valence of manganese from 3 + to intermediate value 3.67+. This is accompanied by an increase Néel temperature in ( T N ) from 56 K at x = 0 to 90 K at x = 0.25, in the paramagnetic Curie temperature ( Θ ) from − 30.3 K at x = 0 to 119.9 K at x = 0.25, as well as in the value of the saturation magnetic moment (μ S ) from 0.27 μB at x = 0 to 3.49 μB at x = 0.25. In addition, such substitution leads to a decrease in the temperature of the JT structural transition from 996 oC at x = 0.0 to 252 oC at x = 0.25. The relationship between the magnetic properties and the crystal structure of samarium manganites is discussed.

Abstract:A systematic investigation of the effect of Strontium (Sr) doping on the structure, magnetic behavior, and magnetocaloric properties of the manganite perovskites ${\text{La}}_{{0.67}} {\text{Ca}}_{{0.33 - x}} {\text{Sr}}_{x} {\text{Mn}}_{{0.98}} {\text{Ni}}_{{0.02}} {\text{O}}_{3}$ (LCSMNO) has been performed. The Sr content x takes three values, namely 0.15, 0.2, and 0.3. The sol–gel technique has been employed in the preparation of our compounds. The structural analysis has revealed that our samples exhibit a rhombohedral structure with $R\bar{3}c$ space group symmetry, close to ambient temperature. A second-order paramagnetic (PM) to ferromagnetic (FM) transition has been validated over the Curie temperature range TC between 319 K (x = 0.15) to 353 K (x = 0.3), based on Arrott's analysis with the behavior of the master curve. According to the calculations made, the maximal values of the magnetic entropy change ${(-\Delta S}_{M}^{max})$ resulting through Landau's theory and the ones obtained by the classic Maxwell relationship are very close. We find the value of ${(-\Delta S}_{M}^{max})$ is equal to 4.386, 4.469, and 4.250 J Kg−1 K−1, respectively, for x = 0.15, 0.2, and 0.3, when an external magnetic field μ0H = 5 T is applied. Based on the results of the study in this work, we find that controlled Sr doping adapts perfectly to the magnetic as well as the magnetocaloric properties of the LCMNO, which plays an important role in the implementation of many potential applications of the material in the field of near-ambient temperature magnetic refrigeration technology.
Structural Studies of (La0.52Y0.15)(Ca0.17Sr0.16)MnO3/SrTiO3 Fhin Films

Abstract:Manganites are very interesting materials for their abundant physics and possible potential applications in industry. Well crystallized (La0.52Y0.15)(Ca0.17Sr0.16)MnO3/SrTiO3 (LYCSMO) thin films are fabricated on (001) SrTiO3 substrate with TiO2 end-surface by rf-magnetron sputtering. The cations of La,Y,Ca,Sr are disorderly interspersed occupying at A-site in ABO3 unit cell, which benefits for growing LYCSMO films. The averaged surface roughness for the film of 0.37 nm is obtained. A two-dimension growth mode is deduced. A tetragonal distortion, which may results from the distribution between the alternated a-axis unit cell and b-axis unit cell, occurs for the films grown on STO although the target of LYCSMO is confirmed to be orthorhombic with the lattice parameters of 5.4537(7) Å, 7.7063(11) Å, and 5.4601(8) Å for a, b, and c, respectively. Two set of phi scanning reflections with four-fold symmetry corresponding to (163) and (361) reflections are obtained using high resolution X-ray diffraction, which indicates the well four-fold symmetry along b-direction. Temperature dependence of resistance shows that a metal-to-insulator transition occurs at ~270K, which well higher than that of the bulk (T~220K). A relatively larger magnetoresistance is also observed in this material, which we believe that the physical properties may result from the distortion in MnO6 in the unit cell.

Abstract:Manganite thin films are promising candidates for studying the strongly correlated electron systems. Understanding the growth-and morphology-driven changes in the physical properties of manganite thin films is vital for their applications in oxitronics. This work reports the morphological, structural, and electrical transport properties of nanostructured Nd0.6Sr0.4MnO3 (NSMO) thin films fabricated using the pulsed laser deposition technique. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) imaging of the thin films revealed two prominent surface morphologies: a granular and a unique crossed-nano-rod-type morphology. From X-ray diffraction (XRD) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) analysis, we found that the observed nanostructures resulted from altered growth modes occurring on the terraced substrate surface. Furthermore, investigations on the electrical-transport properties of thin films revealed that the films with crossed-nano-rod type morphology showed a sharp resistive transition near the metal-to-insulator transition (MIT). An enhanced temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) of up to one order of magnitude was also observed compared to the films with granular morphology. Such enhancement in TCR % by tuning the morphology makes these thin films promising candidates for developing oxide-based temperature sensors and detectors.

Abstract:The double-layer perovskite manganite ceramics with a nominal chemistry La2−2xSr1+2xMn2O7 (LSMO(n=2)) at x=0.15 and 0.3 with minor La2O3 insulating phase are prepared using sol–gel method and their magneto-transport and low-field magnetoresistive (LFMR) properties are investigated and compared with those properties of ceramic La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 (LSMO) with minor La2O3 second phase. It is revealed that the ceramic LSMO(n=2) shows different conduction and magnetic behaviors from ceramic LSMO. It is suggested that the observed LFMR for ceramic LSMO(n=2) is attributed to the spin-polarized tunneling mechanism although its value is slightly lower than that for LSMO.
