Abstract:The electrochemical reduction of oxidized nitrogen species enables a pathway for the carbon neutral synthesis of ammonia (NH3). The most oxidized form of nitrogen, nitrate (NO3-) can be reduced to NH3 via the nitrate reduction reaction (NO3RR), which has been demonstrated at high selectivity. However, to make NH3 synthesis cost-competitive with current technologies, high NH3 partial current densities (jNH3) must be achieved to reduce the levelized cost of NH3. Here, we leverage the high NO3RR activity of Fe-based materials to synthesize a novel active particle-active support system with Fe2O3 nanoparticles supported on atomically dispersed Fe-N-C. By synergizing the activity of both nanoparticles and single atom sites, the optimized 3xFe2O3/Fe-N-C catalyst demonstrates an ultrahigh NO3RR activity, reaching a maximum jNH3 of 1.95 A cm-2 at a Faradaic efficiency (FE) for NH3 of 100% and an NH3 yield rate over 9 mmol hr-1 cm-2. Operando XANES and post-mortem XPS reveal the importance of a pre-reduction activation step, reducing the surface Fe2O3 (Fe3+) to highly active Fe0 sites, which are maintained during electrolysis, to realize the ultrahigh NO3RR activity. Durability studies demonstrate the robustness of both the Fe2O3 particles and Fe-Nx sites at highly cathodic potentials, maintaining a current of -1.3 A cm-2 over 24 hours, a near unity FENH3. This work exhibits an effective and durable active particle-active support system enhancing the performance of the NO3RR, enabling industrially relevant current densities and near 100% selectivity.

Ultralow overpotential 465 mV: Ni and Fe synergistically promote the conversion of nitrate to ammonia

Abstract:The electrochemical nitrate reduction reaction (NO 3 RR) can effectively remove the nitrate from effluent and convert it to usable ammonium. However, the high reaction overpotential and the unclear mechanism hinder the development of NO 3 RR. In this study, a NiFe nanosheet electrocatalyst is developed and employed as a platform to elucidate the NO 3 RR reaction mechanism. The as-prepared NiFe electrocatalyst exhibits an ultralow overpotential of 465 mV, and reaches the yield of ammonia 1329.7 µmol cm − 2 h − 1 , the Faraday efficiency 96.9% at -0.2 V vs. RHE. In-situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and Raman spectrum reveal that Ni is the nitrate adsorption site, where the two-proton transfer step (*NO 3 - →*NO 2 - ) takes place. Meanwhile, the Fe is the water absorption and dissociation site, which can provide more proton to Ni, promoting the further transformation of *NO 2 - to NH 3 .
Boosting Electrochemical Nitrate Reduction to Ammonia by Fe Doped CuO/Co3O4 Nanosheet/Nanowire Heterostructures

Abstract:The electrochemical nitrate reduction reaction (NO3 -RR) is a novel green method for ammonia synthesis. The development of outstanding NO3 -RR performance is based on reasonable catalyst. Metal oxides have garnered significant attention due to their exceptional electrical conductivity and catalytic properties. Doping serves as an effective strategy for enhancing catalyst performance due to its ability to change the electron cloud distribution and energy levels. In this study, we develop a heterojunction catalyst Fe doped copper oxide nanosheet and cobalt tetroxide nanowire growing on carbon cloth simultaneously (Fe-CuO@Co3O4/CC) via hydrothermal method. The well-designed Fe-CuO@Co3O4/CC has excellent NH3 yield (470.9 μmol h-1 cm-2) and Faraday efficiency (FE: 84.4 %) at -1.2 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (vs. RHE). The heterostructure increases the specific surface area of the catalyst, and the possibility of contact between the catalyst and NO3 - ions, enhances the catalytic efficiency. In addition, the catalyst has excellent stability and can stably carry out the electrocatalytic nitrate reduction reaction (NO3 -RR), which provides a way for further research on the high-efficiency reduction of nitrate.
Dual Enhancement of Cu 2 S/CuO Nanocomposites in N-Doped Porous Carbon for Highly Efficient Electrochemical Nitrate Reduction to Ammonia

Abstract:Electrocatalytic NO 3 − reduction reaction (NO 3 RR) to NH 3 emerges as a compelling solution for addressing nitrate pollution while simultaneously producing valuable ammonia under ambient conditions. In this work, we present a strategic concept of dual enhancement for NO 3 RR electrocatalyst, which involves N-doped porous carbon that accelerates the mass transport of nitrate and concurrent Cu species (Cu 2 S/CuO) that fosters a preference for NH 3 generation. With this strategy, the Cu 2 S/CuO-NC catalyst exhibits augmented removal capacity for nitrate and improved ammonia production. It achieves an ammonia faradaic efficiency of 88.6% and a yield rate of 6.63 mg NH3-N cm −2 h −1 (ca. 1.18 mmol mg cat. −1 h −1 ) at −0.6 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode. At −1.0 V, it delivers an impressive yield rate of 12.65 mg NH3-N h −1 cm −2 , which is at the top level for Cu-based catalysts. The effect of critical parameter and reduction pathway of NO 3 RR over Cu 2 S/CuO-NC are revealed by the comprehensive electrochemical evaluations and in-depth analysis of critical parameters.

Enhanced Metal–Support Interfacial Interaction of Pd@FeNi-CoO Composites for Efficient Nitrate Reduction to Ammonia

Abstract:Electrochemical nitrate (NO3 –) production of ammonia (NH3) is not only a green and efficient NH3 production strategy but also can solve the environmental problem of NO3 – excess at the same time, however, there is still a lack of efficient and sensitive electrocatalysts for electrocatalytic NO3 – reduction reaction (NO3RR). Herein, for the first time, Pd nanoparticles on Fe- and Ni-doped CoO nanosheets (Pd@FeNi-CoO) composites with enhanced metal–support interfacial interaction were designed as efficient electrocatalysts for NO3RR. Pd@FeNi-CoO composites exhibit a high NH3 yield rate of 20.26 mg h–1 mg–1 cat. at −0.8 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), outperforming the Pd/FeNi-CoO composites (6.23 mg h–1 mg–1 cat.) and FeNi-CoO nanosheets (4.83 mg h–1 mg–1 cat.). Following 10 cyclic stability tests, the activity of Pd@FeNi-CoO composites shows almost no decline. Moreover, Pd@FeNi-CoO composites can maintain reactivity at different concentrations of NO3 – while also enabling the electrocatalytic reduction of nitrite (NO2 –) to NH3. Mechanism studies reveal that enhanced metal–support interfacial interaction and strong interaction between different elements of Pd@FeNi-CoO composites effectively modulate the electronic structure, promoting NO3 – adsorption and activation thus enhancing NH3 yield rate. This work opens an innovative pathway for the design and development of NO3RR electrocatalysts with high activity.

Abstract:Electrochemical nitrate reduction reaction (NO3RR) is a promising approach to achieve remediation of nitrate-polluted wastewater and sustainable production of ammonia. However, it is still restricted by the low activity, selectivity and Faraday efficiency for ammonia synthesis. Herein, we propose an effective strategy to modulate the electrolyte microenvironment in electrical double layer (EDL) by mediating alkali metal cations in the electrolyte to enhance the NO3RR performance. Taking bulk Cu as a model catalyst, the experimental study reveals that the NO3−-to-NH3 performance in different electrolytes follows the trend Li+ < Cs+ < Na+ < K+. Theoretical studies illustrate that the proton transport rate in NO3RR and the activity of the rate-determining step (NO3− to NO2−) increase in the order Li+ < Cs+ < Na+ < K+. The cation effects are also general for two typical nanostructured catalysts including copper/cuprous oxide and nickel phosphides, achieving near-100% Faradaic efficiency and over 99% conversion of NO3− to NH3. Furthermore, we demonstrate that NO3− can be converted to high-purity NH4Cl by copper/cuprous oxide catalyst in K+-containing electrolyte.

Abstract:The nitrite reduction reaction (NO 2 − RR) is an important process for eliminating toxic nitrites from water while simultaneously producing high-value ammonia under ambient conditions. For the aim to improve the NO 2 − RR efficiency, we designed a new synthetic strategy to prepare a phosphorus-doped three-dimensional NiFe 2 O 4 catalyst loaded onto a nickel foam in-situ and evaluated its performance for the reduction of NO 2 − to NH 3 . The catalyst achieved a high Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 95.39%, and an ammonia (NH 3 ) yield rate of 34788.51 μg h −1 cm −2 at − 0.45 V vs . RHE. A high NH 3 yield rate and FE were maintained after 16 cycles at − 0.35 V vs. RHE in an alkaline electrolyte . This study provides a new direction for the rational design of highly stable electrocatalysts for the conversion of NO 2 − to NH 3 .

Abstract:A tandem catalyst Cu@Fe1‐NC is prepared with co‐existed Cu nanoparticles and dispersed single Fe atoms on N‐doped carbon boosting the electroreduction of NO3− to NH3 in dilute NO3− solutions (≤100 ppm NO3−‐N, ≈7.1 mm). The optimized Cu@Fe1‐NC presents a FENH3 of 97.7% at −0.4 V versus RHE and a record‐high NH3 yield of 1953.9 mmol h−1 gCu−1, superior over the pristine Cu (FENH3 = 25.1%, 15.5 mmol h−1 gCu−1). Electrochemically converting nitrate (NO3−) into ammonia (NH3) has emerged as an alternative strategy for NH3 production and effluent treatment. Nevertheless, the electroreduction of dilute NO3− is still challenging due to the competitive adsorption between various aqueous species and NO3−, and unfavorable water dissociation providing *H. Herein, a new tandem strategy is proposed to boost the electrochemical nitrate reduction reaction (NO3RR) performance of Cu nanoparticles supported on single Fe atoms dispersed N‐doped carbon (Cu@Fe1‐NC) at dilute NO3− concentrations (≤100 ppm NO3−‐N). The optimized Cu@Fe1‐NC presents a FENH3 of 97.7% at −0.4 V versus RHE, and a significant NH3 yield of 1953.9 mmol h−1 gCu−1 at 100 ppm NO3−‐N, a record‐high activity for dilute NO3RR. The metal/carbon heterojunctions in Cu@Fe1‐NC enable a spontaneous electron transfer from Cu to carbon substrate, resulting in electron‐deficient Cu. As a result, the electron‐deficient Cu facilitates the adsorption of NO3− compared with the pristine Cu. The adjacent atomic Fe sites efficiently promote water dissociation, providing abundant *H for the hydrogenation of *NOx e at Cu sites. The synergistic effects between Cu and single Fe atom sites simultaneously decrease the energy barrier for NO3− adsorption and hydrogenation, thereby enhancing the overall activity of NO3− reduction.

Abstract:Electrochemical nitrate reduction reaction (ENO3RR) is a green ammonia synthesis method at ambient conditions relative to the traditional Harber-Bosch technology, which requires no high temperature and high-pressure conditions and can convert the nitrate pollutant in the environment into value-added NH3, thus achieving the goal of killing two birds with one stone. However, more electrocatalysts with remarkable performance towards high efficiency ENO3RR still need to be developed. In this work, a Cu/NiO-NF composite electrocatalyst with nanorod structure on nickel foam was successfully fabricated, which contains heterogeneous interfaces between Cu and NiO toward selective electrocatalytic nitrate reduction ammonia synthesis. The steric nanorod morphology of the catalyst can greatly increase the surface area, expose more active sites, and improve the reaction activity. Moreover, the construction of the composite and the interface effectively boosts the synergistic effect of the active species Cu and NiO, which can regulate the electronic structure of the catalyst, expose more active sites, enhance the conductivity of the material, and accelerate the interface electron transfer, thereby further promoting ENO3RR performance. Such Cu/NiO-NF composite exhibits a high NH3 yield of 0.6 mmol h-1 cm-2 and up to 97.81 % Faradaic efficiency at the optimal applied potential of -1.0 V (vs. RHE) in a concentration of 0.1 M NO3 ̄-containing 0.1 M PBS. Furthermore, it also demonstrates excellent electrochemical cycle stability. This work provides insight into the rational design and fabrication of ENO3RR electrocatalysts for potential electrocatalytic application.

Nickel-based dual single atom electrocatalysts for the nitrate reduction reaction

Abstract:Electrochemical nitrate (NO3-) reduction reaction (NO3-RR) to ammonium (NH4+) or nitrogen (N2) provides a green route for nitrate remediation. However, nitrite generation and hydrogen evolution reactions hinder the feasibility of the process. Herein, dual single atom catalysts were rationally designed by introducing Ag/Bi/Mo atoms to atomically dispersed NiNC moieties supported by nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheet (NCNS) for the NO3-RR. Ni single atoms loaded on NCNS (Ni/NCNS) tend to reduce NO3- to valuable NH4+ with a high selectivity of 77.8 %. In contrast, the main product of NO3-RR catalyzing by NiAg/NCNS, NiBi/NCNS, and NiMo/NCNS was changed to N2, giving rise to N2 selectivity of 48.4, 47.1 and 47.5 %, respectively. Encouragingly, Ni/NCNS, NiBi/NCNS, and NiAg/NCNS showed excellent durability in acidic electrolytes, leading to nitrate conversion rates of 70.3, 91.1, and 93.2 % after a 10-h reaction. Simulated wastewater experiments showed that NiAg/NCNS could remove NO3- up to 97.8 % at -0.62 V after 9-h electrolysis. This work afforded a new strategy to regulate the reaction pathway and improve the conversion efficiency of the NO3-RR via engineering the dual atomic sites of the catalysts.
Elaborately tuning the electronic structure of single-atom nickel sites using nickel nanoparticles to markedly enhance the electrochemical reduction of nitrate into ammonia

Abstract:The electrochemical reduction of nitrate to ammonia (NH 3 ) can be used to recycle nitrogen and offers a decarbonized route for sustainable NH 3 production, but requires efficient electrocatalysts. Herein, we have rationally designed and fabricated a novel self-supported electrocatalyst comprised of Ni nanoparticles (Ni NPs ) embedded in Ni single atoms (Ni SAs ) anchored to nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes grown on carbon cloth (Ni NPs @Ni SAs -NCNTs/CC) used for an efficient nitrate reduction reaction (NO 3 − RR) to produce NH 3 . The electrocatalyst can attain a maximum NH 3 yield rate of 27.67 ± 1.16 mg NH3 h −1 cm −2 at −1.4 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) and nearly 100% Faradic efficiency in the range of −1.2 – −1.4 V vs. RHE in a neutral medium, outperforming the previously reported Ni-based catalysts. Our experimental analysis and theoretical calculations have demonstrated that the moderate electron-deficient state of Ni SAs regulated by Ni NPs not only facilitates the enrichment of NO 3 − , but also benefits the formation of NO 3 * and decrease in the energy barrier of the rate-limiting step, thus resulting in the enhanced NO 3 − RR performance.

High-Performance Electrochemical Nitrate Reduction to Ammonia under Ambient Conditions Using a FeOOH Nanorod Catalyst

Abstract:Electrocatalytic nitrate reduction is promising as an environmentally friendly process to produce high value-added ammonia with simultaneous removal of nitrate, a widespread nitrogen pollutant, for water treatment; however, efficient electrocatalysts with high selectivity are required for ammonia formation. In this work, FeOOH nanorod with intrinsic oxygen vacancy supported on carbon paper (FeOOH/CP) is proposed as a high-performance electrocatalyst for converting nitrate to ammonia at room temperature. When operated in a 0.1 M phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) solution with 0.1 M NaNO3, FeOOH/CP is able to obtain a large NH3 yield of 2419 μg h–1 cm–2 and a surprisingly high Faradic efficiency of 92% with excellent stability. Porous Two-dimensional Iron-Cyano Nanosheets for High-rate Electrochemical Nitrate Reduction

Abstract:Ammonia (NH3) is an essential ingredient in agriculture and a promising source of clean energy as a hydrogen carrier. The current major method for ammonia production, however, is the Haber-Bosch process that leads to massive energy consumption and severe environmental issues. Compared with nitrogen (N2) reduction, electrochemical nitrate reduction reaction (NO3RR), with a higher NH3 yield rate and Faradaic efficiency, holds promise for efficient NH3 production under ambient conditions. To achieve efficient NO3RR, electrocatalysts should exhibit high selectivity and Faradaic efficiency with a high NH3 yield rate. In this work, we developed two-dimensional (2D) iron-based cyano-coordination polymer nanosheets (Fe-cyano NSs) following in situ electrochemical treatment for high-rate NO3RR. Owing to the strong adsorption of nitrate on Fe0 active sites generated via topotactic conversion and in situ electroreduction, 2D Fe-cyano electrocatalyst exhibits high catalytic activity with a yield rate of 42.1 mg h-1 mgcat-1 and a Faradaic efficiency of over 90% toward NH3 production at -0.5 V (vs reversible hydrogen electrode, RHE). Further electrochemical characterizations revealed that superhydrophilic surface and enhanced electrochemical surface area of the 2D porous nanostructures also contributed to the high-rate NO3RR activity. An electrolyzer toward NO3RR and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in a two-electrode configuration is constructed based on 2D Fe-cyano, achieving an energy efficiency of 26.2%. This work provides an alternative methodology toward topotactic conversion of transition metal nanosheets for NO3RR and reveals the often-overlooked contribution of hydrophilicity of the catalysts for high-rate electrocatalysis.

Abstract:Abstract The electrocatalytic conversion of nitrate (NO 3 ̅) to NH 3 (NO 3 RR) offers a promising alternative to the Haber–Bosch process. However, the overall kinetic rate of NO 3 RR is plagued by the complex proton‐assisted multiple‐electron transfer process. Herein, Ag/Co 3 O 4 /CoOOH nanowires (i‐Ag/Co 3 O 4 NWs) tandem catalyst is designed to optimize the kinetic rate of intermediate reaction for NO 3 RR simultaneously. The authors proved that NO 3 ̅ ions are reduced to NO 2 ̅ preferentially on Ag phases and then NO 2 ̅ to NO on Co 3 O 4 phases. The CoOOH phases catalyze NO reduction to NH 3 via NH 2 OH intermediate. This unique catalyst efficiently converts NO 3 ̅ to NH 3 through a triple reaction with a high Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 94.3% and a high NH 3 yield rate of 253.7 μmol h −1 cm −2 in 1 M KOH and 0.1 M KNO 3 solution at ‒0.25 V versus RHE. The kinetic studies demonstrate that converting NH 2 OH into NH 3 is the rate‐determining step (RDS) with an energy barrier of 0.151 eV over i‐Ag/Co 3 O 4 NWs. Further applying i‐Ag/Co 3 O 4 NWs as the cathode material, a novel Zn‐nitrate battery exhibits a power density of 2.56 mW cm −2 and an FE of 91.4% for NH 3 production.

Abstract:Electrochemical reduction of nitrate pollutants to ammonia is quite attractive in the context of the energy crisis and sustainable development, and developing efficient electrocatalysts with high NH 3 yield rate and FE is particularly important and imminent. Herein, an efficient catalyst, Ni 2 P@Cu 3 P, for electrochemical reduction of nitrate to ammonia (NRA) was successfully constructed in situ on a copper foam. The interface coupling in Ni 2 P@Cu 3 P significantly optimized its surface electronic structure and induced the exposure of more metal-P bonds on the catalyst surface, resulting in its brilliant NRA performance with NH 3 FE of 96.97 %, yield rate of 0.2784 mmol·h −1 ·cm −2 , selectivity rate of 98.07 % and NO 3 − conversion rate of 99.35 %. DFT theoretical calculations indicated that optimization of the catalyst surface electronic structure by interface electron coupling significantly regulated the adsorption intensities of NRA intermediates on the catalyst surface, improving the catalytic performance for the NRA. The present work has some reference significance for understanding the design principle of efficient electrocatalysts for the reduction of nitrate to ammonia.

Abstract:AbstractElectrochemical reduction of nitrite (NO2−) offers an energy‐efficient route for ammonia (NH3) synthesis and reduction of the level of nitrite, which is one of the major pollutants in water. However, the near 100 % Faradaic efficiency (FE) has yet to be achieved due to the complicated reduction route with several intermediates. Here, we report that carbon dioxide (CO2) can enhance the nitrite electroreduction to ammonia on copper nanowire (Cu NW) catalysts. In a broad potential range (−0.7∼−1.3 V vs. RHE), the FE of nitrite to ammonia is close to 100 % with a 3.5‐fold increase in activity compared to that obtained without CO2. In situ Raman spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that CO2 acts as a catalyst to facilitate the *NO to *N step, which is the rate determining step for ammonia synthesis. The promotion effect of CO2 can be expanded to electroreduction of other nitro‐compounds, such as nitrate to ammonia and nitrobenzene to aniline.

Abstract:Abstract Electrochemically converting nitrate, a widespread water pollutant, back to valuable ammonia is a green and delocalized route for ammonia synthesis, and can be an appealing and supplementary alternative to the Haber-Bosch process. However, as there are other nitrate reduction pathways present, selectively guiding the reaction pathway towards ammonia is currently challenged by the lack of efficient catalysts. Here we report a selective and active nitrate reduction to ammonia on Fe single atom catalyst, with a maximal ammonia Faradaic efficiency of ~ 75% and a yield rate of up to ~ 20,000 μg h −1 mg cat. −1 (0.46 mmol h −1 cm −2 ). Our Fe single atom catalyst can effectively prevent the N-N coupling step required for N 2 due to the lack of neighboring metal sites, promoting ammonia product selectivity. Density functional theory calculations reveal the reaction mechanisms and the potential limiting steps for nitrate reduction on atomically dispersed Fe sites.

Abstract:Electro-catalytic conversion of nitrate (NO 3 - ) to ammonia (NH 3 ) via the Nitrate Reduction to Ammonia (NORA) process represents a promising strategy for both ammonia synthesis and environmental remediation. Despite its potential, the efficiency of low-concentration NORA is often hindered by mass transfer limitations, competing byproducts (N 2 and NO 2 - ), and side reactions such as hydrogen evolution. This study introduces a novel pulsed electro-synthesis technique that alternates the potential to periodically accumulate and transform NO 2 - intermediates near a Cu2O@Pd electrode, enhancing the NORA process. Compared with that under potentiostatic conditions, the Cu 2 O@Pd electrodes exhibited a higher NORA activity under the optimized pulsed condition, where a NH 3 -N Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 81.2%, a yield rate of 1.08 mg h -1 cm -2 and a selectivity efficiency (SE) of 81.5%, were achieved. In-situ characterization revealed an enhancement mechanism characterized by optimized adsorption of the key *NO intermediate, followed by the hydrogenation path "*N → *NH → *NH 2 → *NH 3 ". Further investigations indicated the electro-catalytic synergies between Pd sites and Cu species, where the Pd atoms were the reaction sites for the H adsorption while the Cu species were responsible for the NO 3 - activation. This research offers a novel insight into a method of enhancing low-concentration NORA.

Abstract:The electrochemical reduction of nitrate (NO 3 − RR) represents a compelling approach for the treatment of wastewater, serving as both a sustainable substitute to the energy-intensive Haber-Bosch process and a viable alternative to direct electroreduction of N 2 . However, the process involves multiple electron and proton transfer steps and a complex reaction pathway, leading to low Faraday efficiency and selectivity. Herein, we demonstrated a directional surface reconstruction to generate CoP-Cu/Co(OH) 2 heterojunction for synergistic catalysis of NO 3 − RR. Impressively, a high ammonia generation rate of 9.91 mmol h −1 cm −2 and a Faraday efficiency of 99.2 % can be achieved at an industrial-relevant current density of 2 A cm −2 . Moreover, the catalyst exhibited exceptional durability, maintaining the activity for 110 h under industrial current density. Such outstanding NO 3 − RR performance can be ascribed to the synergistic catalytic effect among the active sites of Cu, CoP and Co(OH) 2 , as well as the excellent stability of self-supported catalyst. Specifically, Cu and CoP sites synergistically promote the conversion of NO 3 − to NO 2 − and NO 2 − to NH 3 . Meanwhile, the partial reconstructed Co(OH) 2 from CoP enhances water dissociation, thereby supplying active hydrogen (*H) essential for NO 3 − RR. When applied to a membrane electrode assembly (MEA) system, CoP-Cu/Co(OH) 2 can deliver satisfactory ammonia production rate with appreciable economic benefits at industrial-level current densities, highlighting its potential for industrial applications.

Abstract:Atomically ordered PdFe3 L12 intermetallic nanoparticles are incorporated into mesoporous carbon nanofibers for electrocatalytic nitrate reduction to produce ammonia. The catalyst demonstrates a high activity and stability, attributed to the cooperative effect of periodic adjacent Pd‐Fe pair sites at the ordered (110) facet via enhancing proton relay. Recently, bimetallic nanoparticles (NPs) are promising for driving nitrate (NO3 −) reduction reaction (NO3RR) to produce ammonia (NH3) due to their multiple active sites and electron redistribution via strong metal–metal interaction. However, the quantitatively determining the atomic configuration of the active sites and revealing their respective roles in NO3RR process are still challenged. Herein, the configuration of atomically ordered PdFe3 L12 intermetallic NPs into mesoporous carbon nanofibers (O‐PdFe3‐mCNFs) is reported as an efficient NO3RR catalyst for NH3 synthesis. Compared to the face‐centered cubic one, the O‐PdFe3‐mCNFs demonstrate a high NO3− removal of 98.3% within 270 min with a large NH3 yield rate of 1014.2 μmol h−1 cm−2. The detailed in situ and theoretical analysis reveals that the high performance of O‐PdFe3‐mCNFs is attributed to the synergetic effect from the periodic adjacent Pd‐Fe pair sites at the ordered (110) facet via accelerating proton relay, where the Fe sites show preferable stabilization of nitrogen−oxygen (*NO) intermediates while Pd sites serve as proton reservoir for *NO hydrogenation. Moreover, the strong d‐d orbital hybridization tunes d‐band center of the alloy NPs and effectively modulates the adsorption energy of *NO3− and *NO. This synergetic electrocatalyst design offers a new avenue for developing highly efficient multifunctional NO3RR catalysts.
