Abstract:This work involved the preparation of pristine and iron nanoparticle-loaded biochar from a water chestnut shell to remove diclofenac sodium (DCF) containing effluent of pharmaceutical origin. To create suitable forecasting equations for the modelling of the DCF adsorption onto the adsorbent, response surface methodology (RSM) was used. The parameters, e.g. pH, adsorbent mass, DCF concentration and contact time, were used for the modeling of adsorption. The RSM model predicts that for 98.0% DCF removal, the ideal conditions are pH 6, an adsorbent dose of 0.5 g L −1 , and a contact time of 60 min with an initial adsorbate concentration of 25 mg L −1 at 303 K. The maximum capacity deduced from the Langmuir model was 75.9 mg g −1 for pristine water chestnut shell biochar (pWCBC) and 122.3 mg g −1 for magnetically modified nano-Fe 2 O 3 biochar (mWCBC). Under equilibrium conditions, the Langmuir model was the best-suited model compared to the Temkin and Freundlich models. The adsorption data in this investigation efficiently fitted the pseudo-second-order model, emphasizing that chemisorption or ion exchange processes may be involved in the process. The WCBC demonstrated recyclability after 10 cycles of repeated adsorption and desorption of DCF. A combined coagulation adsorption process removed COD, NH 3 –N, NO 3 − , PO 4 3− , and DCF by 92.50%, 86.41%, 77.57%, 84.54%, and 97.25%, respectively. This study therefore shows that coagulation followed by adsorption onto biochar can be a cost-effective substitute for conventional pharmaceutical wastewater treatment.

Abstract:In this study, biochar was obtained from walnut shells (WS) using one- and two-stage pyrolysis processes at different temperatures (500, 600, 700, 700 + 700 °C). The biochar obtained was used as an adsorbent for the removal of naproxen, an organic pollutant, from aquatic systems. The highest removal efficiency was obtained with 700 + 700-WSB obtained by the two-stage pyrolysis method. The physicochemical properties of walnut shell biochar (WSB) were investigated using SEM–EDX, FTIR, XRD, BET, elemental analysis, and TGA. 700 + 700-WSB had a high surface area of 649 m 2 /g and a pronounced porous structure, according to the BET and SEM analysis results. Various experimental parameters (pH, contact time, amount of adsorbent, temperature, initial concentration, and pH pzc ) were investigated to study the adsorption of naproxen by 700 + 700-WSB in an aqueous solution. The point of zero charge of the 700 + 700-WSB adsorbent was calculated as 7.15. The 700 + 700-WSB obtained at optimum parameter levels, such as 25 °C and 4 h time has an adsorption capacity of 58.8 mg/g. To analyze the equilibrium results, the Langmuir, Sips, Freundlich, and Temkin adsorption isotherm models were utilized. The equilibrium data fit the Langmuir (R 2 = 0.984) and Sips (R 2 = 0.979) models among the isotherm models. Investigating the adsorption characteristics of naproxen on WSB involved the study of the kinetic models and thermodynamic components of the adsorption process. The psuedo-second order kinetic model (PSO) was shown to be consistent with the experimental data through kinetic investigations, and the thermodynamic results (ΔG° = − 21.87 kJ/mol, ΔH° = − 29.52 kJ/mol and ΔSo = − 25.73 J/mol K) indicated that the adsorption process was exothermic and spontaneous.

Abstract:Micro‐mesopore carbonaceous material (56.8% mesopores) was applied for effectively removing naproxen drug from water. Its maximum adsorption capacity was 252.7 at 25°C, 268.5 mg/g at 40°C, and 317.4 mg/g at 55°C. A decrease in its BET‐surface area from 585 to 71.6 m2/g after adsorption confirmed pore‐filing mechanism (physical adsorption). Commercial micro‐mesoporous carbonaceous material (MCM; 56.8% mesopores) was applied for investigating the removal phenomenon of naproxen drug in aqueous solutions through batch adsorption experiments. Results demonstrated that the adsorption capacity of MCM to naproxen was slightly affected by different pHeq (2.0–11) and ionic strength (0–1 M NaCl). Adsorption kinetics, isotherms, thermodynamics, and mechanisms were evaluated at pH 7.0. Adsorption kinetics indicated the rate constants for adsorption (0.2 × 10−3 L/(mg × min) and desorption (0.076/min) and the adsorption equilibrium constant (2.6 × 10−3 L/mg). Adsorption isotherm showed that MCM exhibited a high‐affinity adsorption capacity to naproxen (even at low concentrations) and its Langmuir maximum adsorption capacity (Qmax) was 252.7 mg/g at 25°C. Adsorption thermodynamics proved that the adsorption process was endothermic and physisorption (ΔH° = 9.66 kJ/mol). The analysis result of pore size distribution demonstrated that the internal pore structure of MCM was appropriate for adsorbing naproxen molecules. Pore‐filing mechanism (pore diffusion phenomenon) was confirmed by a considerable decrease in BET‐surface area (585 m2/g) and total pore volume (0.417 cm3/g) of MCM after adsorbing naproxen (~1000 mg/L and pH 7.0) at 5 min (341 and 0.256), 60 min (191 and 0.205), 120 min (183 and 0.193), 360 min (144 and 0.175), and 24 h (71.6 m2/g and 0.123 cm3/g, respectively). The pore diffusion occurred rapidly (even at the initial adsorption period of 5 min). The FTIR technique was applied to identify the existence of C–H···π and n–π interaction. π–π interaction (evaluated through ID/IG ratio and C=C band) played a minor contribution in adsorption mechanisms. The ID/IG ratio (determined by the Raman technique) of MCM before adsorption (1.195) was similar to that after adsorption (1.190), and the wavenumber (C=C band; its FTIR spectrum) slightly shifted from 1638 to 1634 cm−1 after adsorption. A decrease in the Qmax value of MCM from 249 to 217 (H2O2‐oxidized MCM) or to 224 mg/g (HNO3‐oxidized MCM) confirmed the presence of π–π interaction. Electrostatic attraction was a minor contribution. MCM can serve as a promising material for removing naproxen from water environment through a pore‐filling mechanism. Practitioner Points Pore‐filling mechanism was proposed by comparing textural properties of MCM before and after adsorbing naproxen. C–H···π and n–π interactions were identified via FTIR technique. π–π interaction was observed by FTIR and Raman techniques. Oxidation of MCM with HNO3 or H2O2 was a helpful method to explore π–π interaction. Electrostatic attraction was explained through studies: effects of pH and NaCl along with desorption.

Abstract:Diclofenac sodium is a pharmaceutical that is extensively prescribed and consumed worldwide. Consequently, its release into water bodies has become a global concern, as it poses ecotoxicity, leading to severe public health and environmental problems. A literature research was performed to find a low-cost adsorbent with cationic characteristics that could be used to remove anionic contaminants from water, such as diclofenac sodium. In view of the above, this work aimed to investigate diclofenac sodium (DFS) removal using eucalyptus wood biochar (EWB) through the adsorption process. EWB was characterized by various techniques to obtain information regarding its surface charge, morphology and functional groups. Scanning electron microscopy displayed a porous surface, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy showed a notable number of functional groups on the EWB surface. Brunauer–Emmett–Teller presented an ABET of 619.35 m2 g–1 and the point of zero charge was 7.98. The influence of pH, contact time, initial concentration, and temperature of DFS were studied in batch tests. Box–Behnken design was used in surface response methodology to optimize the process conditions and obtain the maximum adsorption capacity, which was found to be 42.08 mg g–1, reached in 6 h, showing a good performance. Kinetic data best fit the pseudo-second-order model and equilibrium data were in better agreement with the Sips model, indicating monolayer adsorption. The thermodynamic study demonstrated the adsorption process was spontaneous and endothermic. Considering the high efficiency evidenced in this study, low cost for production and the adsorbent being a renewable source, EWB is a promising material with the potential to remove DFS from water.

Abstract:The performance of a new method for synthesizing super activated carbon derived from sheep manure in the adsorption of naproxen micropollutant from an aqueous solution was investigated in this research. Chemical activation employing ZnCl 2 as an activator was used to produce activated carbon. The effects of several parameters such as the rate of impregnation, temperature of activation, and duration of activation on the synthesis of activated carbon were examined. FTIR, SEM, and BET measurements were used to characterize the produced activated carbons. The surface area of the manufactured activated carbon was determined to be 2170 m 2 g −1 . On naproxen adsorption, the effects of solution initial pH, solution initial concentration, and amount of activated carbon were examined. When the pH of the solution was 4, the adsorption capacity was found to be greater. The pseudo-second order kinetic model was found to fit the adsorption kinetics. The data on adsorption equilibrium was found to be consistent with the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm. According to Langmuir isotherm adsorbent capacity q m was found 7790 mg g −1 . ΔG 0 , ΔS 0 , and ΔH 0 , among other thermodynamic parameters, were estimated. The thermodynamics of the naproxen–Activated Carbon combination show that the reaction is endothermic and favourable. This high surface area and adsorption capacity showed that the material is innovatively important.

Lidocaine permeability in silicone tissue expanders: an in vitro analysis.

Abstract:Tissue expansion has achieved a prominent role in soft-tissue reconstruction. Expansion-induced pain is often a limiting factor in this process and can affect patients for as long as 24 to 48 hours following each expansion session. Although lidocaine is known to be an effective analgesic, only anecdotal reports of its usefulness when placed within a tissue expander currently exist. This two-part study was designed first to determine if in fact silicone is readily permeable to lidocaine, and second to determine if the potential diffusion dynamics can be defined. In part 1 of the study, the silicone polymer was indeed found to be readily permeable to lidocaine as measured with fluorescence immunoassay technique. In part 2, two groups of Surgitek and Dow Corning expanders were filled with saline and lidocaine and placed in saline baths. At several intervals over a 48-hour period, aliquots of the surrounding saline were sampled and the lidocaine levels subsequently determined. A rather predictable and consistent diffusion curve was demonstrated. The significant difference in diffusion characteristics between the two expander types was apparently due to wall thickness differences inherent in the manufacturing. In this in vitro study, filler-valve leakage did not significantly contribute to lidocaine migration from within these tissue expanders. This basic in vitro work will now set the stage for further in vivo and clinical investigations to more precisely define the role of lidocaine in the tissue-expansion process.
Sodium-alginate-laden MXene and MOF systems and their composite hydrogel beads for batch and fixed-bed adsorption of naproxen with electrochemical regeneration

Abstract:Sodium alginate (SA)-laden two-dimensional (2D) Ti3C2Tx MXene (MX) and MIL-101(Fe) (a type of metal-organic framework (MOF)) composites were prepared and used for the removal of naproxen (NPX), following the adsorption and electrochemical regeneration processes. The fixed-bed adsorption column studies were also conducted to study the process of removal of NPX by hydrogels. The number of interactions via which the MX-embedded SA (MX@SA) could adsorb NPX was higher than the number of pathways associated with NPX adsorption on the MIL-101(Fe)-embedded SA (MIL-101(Fe)@SA), and the MX and MIL-101(Fe) composite embedded SA (MX/MIL-101(Fe)@SA). The optimum parameters for the electrochemical regeneration process were determined: charge passed and current density values were 169.3 C g-1 and 10 mA cm-2, respectively, for MX@SA, and the charge passed and current density values were 16.7 C g-1 and 5 mA cm-2, respectively, for both MIL-101(Fe)@SA and MX/MIL-101(Fe)@SA. These parameters enabled excellent regeneration, consistent over multiple adsorption and electrochemical regeneration cycles. The mechanism for the regeneration of the materials was proposed that the regeneration of MX@SA and MIL-101(Fe)@SA involved the indirect electrooxidation process in the presence of OH radicals, and the regeneration of MX/MIL-101(Fe)@SA involved the indirect oxidation process in the presence of active chlorine species.
The Surface Functional Groups-Driven Fast and Catalytic Degradation of Naproxen on Sludge Biochar Enhanced by Citric Acid

Abstract:In this work, a sludge biochar (CA-SBC-300) with efficient activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) was prepared by citric acid modification. CA-SBC-300 achieved efficient degradation of naproxen (NPX) (95.5%) within 10 min by activating PMS. This system was highly resilient to common disruptive factors such as inorganic anions, humic acid (HA) and solution pH. The results of XPS and Raman showed that the content of oxygenated functional groups (OFGs) and the degree of defects on the sludge biochar increased after citric acid modification, which may be an important reason for the enhanced catalytic performance of SBC. In the CA-SBC-300/PMS system, 1O2 and O2•- made the main contributions to the degradation of NPX. XPS analysis and DFT calculations demonstrated that C=O/C-O and pyridine N on CA-SBC-300 were the crucial active sites for PMS activation. According to the results of UPLC-MS analysis, three possible pathways for NPX degradation were inferred. This study provided a feasible strategy for sludge resource utilization combined with efficient catalytic degradation of toxic organic contaminants in wastewater.
Utilizing Hydrothermally Carbonized Food Waste-Derived Activated Hydrochar for the Elimination of Carbamazepine and Naproxen

Abstract:Abstract Chemical products (CPs), such as carbamazepine and naproxen, present in aquatic environments pose a considerable risk to both aquatic life and human health. This study aimed to explore the potential of employing hydrothermally carbonized food waste-derived hydrochar (AC-HTC-250) as an adsorbent to eliminate these CPs from water. The research specifically examined the influence of hydrothermal carbonization temperature on hydrochar properties and the ramifications of chemical activation using phosphoric acid on the hydrochar's adsorption capacity for carbamazepine and naproxen. Additionally, the activated and non-activated hydrochars' physiochemical and surface characteristics were scrutinized in depth. The investigation demonstrated that the hydrothermal carbonization process contributed to an increase in hydrochar surface area from 1.47 to 7.52 m 2 /g, which was subsequently amplified to 32.81 m 2 /g through phosphoric acid activation. Batch adsorption experiments indicated that AC-HTC-250 hydrochar exhibited high efficiency in removing carbamazepine and naproxen, with adsorption capacities of 49.09 mg/kg and 14.34 mg/kg, respectively. The study also revealed that the adsorption data corresponded well with the Langmuir model and pseudo first-order models. The solution's pH exerted a strong influence on carbamazepine and naproxen adsorption, with the optimal pH for both compounds determined to be 4. These findings hold potential for applying hydrothermally carbonized and chemically activated food waste-derived hydrochar as an adsorbent in wastewater treatment processes.

Abstract:The synthesis and characterization of natural based polysaccharide (Chitosan/Agar/SiO2) nanocomposite has been investigated in order to remove the effluent of amoxicillin and naproxen as the pharmaceuticals from an aqueous solution. Effective factors in the removal of pharmaceutical pollutants, such as contact time, initial concentration, pH of solution and temperature have been investigated. The present study performed synthesis and characterization nanocomposite based polysaccharide Chitosan/Agar and Chitosan/Agar/SiO2 nanoparticles as adsorbents for remove amoxicillin and naproxen as the pharmaceuticals from an aqueous solution. The structure and morphology of nanocomposite were investigated using X‐ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy (EDX), Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopes (FE‐SEM) and Dynamic light scattering (DLS). The removal performance of the Chitosan/Agar and Chitosan/Agar/SiO2 nanoparticles nanocomposite as adsorbent for removing amoxicillin and naproxen as sample of pharmaceutical industry effluents in aqueous solutions was investigated under different influence factors, including contact time, initial concentration, pH conditions and temperature. The maximum adsorption removal for amoxicillin with Agar/Chitosan and Agar/Chitosan/SiO2 nanocomposite at initial concentrations of 20 mg/l was 97.85 % and 87.9 %, respectively. With increasing temperature from 10 to 30°C, the removal efficiency for naproxen for both adsorbents is 99 %. The prepared nanocomposites showed good performance in adsorbing naproxen and amoxicillin. The maximum adsorption efficiency of nanocomposite was 99 % and 91 % for naproxen and amoxicillin, respectively. The optimum condition for pharmaceuticals removal by the nanocomposite was initial concentration: 20 mg/l, adsorbent dose: 0.05 g, contact time: 10 min, and pH=6.

Abstract:The purpose of this work is to investigate the efficiency of orange peel (OP) in the removal of a pharmaceutical product (Naproxen) from aqueous solutions. Adsorption isotherms were determined experimentally. The results showed that orange peel has an appreciable affinity for Naproxen, with an elimination capacity of 45 mg/g and that the temperature has a very significant effect on the adsorption process. The obtained data were then tested by three models (Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin) and the Langmuir model provided a good fit with the experimental values. A thermodynamic study proved that the adsorption process is physical, spontaneous and endothermic. In the adsorption kinetics study, the influence of certain parameters, such as pH and the initial concentration of the naproxen solution, was investigated by three models (pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order and Elovich kinetics). The results show that the kinetics decrease with the initial naproxen concentration, and that the first-order model describes the adsorption kinetics well.

A comparative study on performance of the conventional and fixed-bed membrane bioreactors for treatment of Naproxen from pharmaceutical wastewater

Abstract:Here, a comparative study was designed to survey the treatment efficiency of pharmaceutical wastewater containing Naproxen by Membrane bioreactor (MBR) and MBR with fixed-bed packing media (FBMBR). To this end, the performance of MBR and FBMBR in different aeration conditions including average DO (1.9-3.8 mg/L), different organic loading (OLR) (0.86, 1.14 and 1.92 kg COD per cubic meter per day), and Naproxen removal efficiency. The BOD5 removal efficiency, effluent quality and membrane fouling were monitored within 140 days. The results obtained from the present study indicated that COD removal efficiency for FBMBR (96.46%) was higher than that for MBR (95.33%). In addition, a high COD removal efficiency was experienced in both MBR and FBMBR in operational conditions 3 and 4, even where OLR increased from 1.14 to 1.92 kgCOD/m3 d and DO decreased from 4 to < 1 mg/L. Furthermore, the higher Naproxen removal efficiency was observed in FBMBR (94.17%) compared to that for MBR (92.76%). Therefore, FBMBR is a feasible and promising method for efficient treatment of pharmaceuptical wastewater with high concentrations of emerging contaminant, especially, the Naproxen.

Abstract:Adsorption process has proven its efficiency in the abatement of pharmaceuticals in liquid media, even if large volumes of wastewater need to be treated. Nevertheless, exhausted adsorbent regeneration is economically and environmentally necessary. For this reason, recent studies are aimed at finding new methods of regeneration. In this study, an on-site adsorption-regeneration method was assessed. Initially, a model pharmaceutical, Antipyrine (Apy), has been adsorbed onto a low-cost biochar. Apy adsorption followed a pseudo-second order kinetic and a Langmuir isotherm. In a second step, spent biochar was regenerated by oxidation using SO4•− . To do this, SO4•− was generated by activation of persulfate by ultrasound and assisted by the iron inherently into the biochar. To facilitate the availability of this iron, the addition of an enhancing agent such as oxalic acid was evaluated. The regenerated biochar proved its stability and reusability achieving an uptake percentage of around 87% after the third adsorption-regeneration cycle. Therefore, this on-site regeneration method could be promising for treating other kinds of adsorbents and resolving the pollution problems caused by the non-controlled throw of the exhausted adsorbents.

Abstract:Due to the dual issues of antibiotic resistance and bioaccumulation toxicity, antibiotics are ubiquitously present in aquatic environments, and this is causing serious concern. Herein, novel nickel ferrite (NiFe2O4) nanoparticles were successfully loaded onto activated biochar (BC) derived from banana peel (BP) to obtain magnetic nanocomposite (BC-NiFe2O4) as an effective biosorbent for the ciprofloxacin antibiotic (CIP) elimination from pharmaceutical effluent. A facile co-precipitation approach was utilized to construct the heterogeneous BC-NiFe2O4. The synthesized materials were systematically characterized using techniques such as XRD, FE-SEM, EDX, HR-TEM, BET, FTIR, and XPS. In addition, the magnetic measurements indicated the ferromagnetic behavior of the BC-NiFe2O4 sample. The influencing factors (i.e., pH, contact time, initial concentration, dose of adsorbent, ions interference, and solution temperature) of the adsorption process were also well studied. The adsorption capacity of the BC-NiFe2O4 heterostructure was 68.79 mg g-1 compared to the BC sample (35.71 mg g-1), confirming that the loading of magnetically NiFe2O4 nanoparticles onto the surface of porous biochar enhanced its stability and adsorption performance for CIP removal, wherein the metal-antibiotic complex has a significant effect for the removal of CIP. Moreover, the Langmuir adsorption isotherm and the pseudo-second-order model displayed a good fit for the experimental data. The values of △H° and △G° revealed that the adsorption process was endothermic and spontaneous. The coordination affinities, π-π stacking, and H-bonding interactions play a more critical role in the adsorption mechanism that confirmed by FTIR and XPS analysis. To study the stability of BC-NiFe2O4 nanocomposites, desorption and recycling studies were investigated. The results revealed that after three cycles, no significant loss in removal efficiency was detected, reflecting the stability and reusability of the prepared BC-NiFe2O4 nanocomposite.

Abstract:This study explored the combined treatment approach to facilitate the treatment of tannery wastewater through Fenton's reagents and batch adsorption method, which involved the use of low-cost wood biochar. Low-cost adsorbent obtained from thermal conversion of wood biomass ( Callistemon citrinus ) modified with nano-MgO. Scanning Electron Microscopy, Energy Dispersive X-ray, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transfer-IR, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller–N 2, and Lazer Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy analysis were used to characterize the adsorbent material. Fenton's reagents, comprising 15 mM of FeSO 4 and 25 mM of H 2 O 2 , were employed under controlled conditions: pH 3.0, reaction duration of 30 min, a temperature of 30 °C, and agitation at 120 rpm. This process yielded substantial removal percentages for various contaminants, with 82, 79, 67, 72, and 25% removal of COD, NH 3 –N, NO 3 2− , PO 4 2− , and Cr(VI), respectively. Subsequently, a batch adsorption treatment was conducted within a range of parameters, including pH (1.5–8), contact times (10–240) min, biomass dosages (0.25–2.5) g L −1 , and temperature (28–34 °C) range. Significantly, the Fenton treatment substantially enhanced the biodegradability of the system, resulting in an improved efficiency of the subsequent batch adsorption process. This enhancement led to impressive removal percentages of COD, NH 3 –N, NO 3 2− , PO 4 2− , and Cr(VI),of 93, 88, 79, 8, and 98%, respectively. The equilibrium data exhibited a strong alignment with the Langmuir isotherm model, underscoring a remarkable adsorption capacity of 102.74 mg g −1 . Kinetic assessments further indicated conformity with the pseudo-second-order model. Significantly, the uninterrupted series of adsorption and desorption cycles throughout ten iterations highlighted the enduring reusability and robustness of the biochar adsorbent that was prepared.

Abstract:One-step carbonization was explored to prepare biochar using the residue of a traditional Chinese herbal medicine, Atropa belladonna L. (ABL), as the raw material. The resulting biochar, known as ABLB4, was evaluated for its potential as a sustainable material for norfloxacin (NOR) adsorption in water. Subsequently, a comprehensive analysis of adsorption isotherms, kinetics, and thermodynamics was conducted through batch adsorption experiments. The maximum calculated NOR adsorption capacity was 252.0 mg/g at 298 K, and the spontaneous and exothermic adsorption of NOR on ABLB4 could be better suited to a pseudo-first-order kinetic model and Langmuir model. The adsorption process observed is influenced by pore diffusion, π-π interaction, electrostatic interaction, and hydrogen bonding between ABLB4 and NOR molecules. Moreover, the utilization of response surface modeling (RSM) facilitated the optimization of the removal efficiency of NOR, yielding a maximum removal rate of 97.4% at a temperature of 304.8 K, an initial concentration of 67.1 mg/L, and a pH of 7.4. Furthermore, the biochar demonstrated favorable economic advantages, with a payback of 852.5 USD/t. More importantly, even after undergoing five cycles, ABLB4 exhibited a consistently high NOR removal rate, indicating its significant potential for application in NOR adsorption.

Abstract:Pharmaceuticals can escape conventional wastewater treatments, causing environmental risks. Magnetic, chemically functionalized carbon adsorption is a promising complementary technique to address this contamination. We synthesized sustainable Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles supported on CN-rich activated carbon (MAC CN ) derived from Prunus scoparia shells. These nanoparticles were characterized using FE-SEM, EDS, FTIR, VSM, BET/BJH, and XRD analyses to determine their morphological, textural, structural, and surface properties. The MAC CN exhibited nanosized particles with a desirable surface area and pore volume, along with reactive functional groups such as OH, COOH, and CN. This innovative material was applied for the simultaneous adsorption of metronidazole and acetaminophen, known toxic pharmaceuticals, achieving removal percentages of 79.5 % and 82.16 %, respectively. A central composite design combined with the desirability function approach was used to find optimal conditions. The results confirmed a desirability score of 0.896, achieved with a contact time of 275 seconds, 10 mg adsorbent mass, 17.5 mg/L initial concentration, and pH 8. This efficiency is attributed to the high surface area of MAC CN , which facilitates rapid diffusion and strong affinity for guest molecules within its porous structure. Adsorption kinetics were best described by the pseudo-second-order model (R2 = 0.986 and 0.991), while the Langmuir model (R2 = 0.990 and 0.972) provided the best fit for adsorption capacities. The plausible mechanism involved weak van der Waals forces, pore-filling, π-π interactions, hydrogen bonding, and complex formation. The synthesized MAC CN , quickly recoverable from water, shows promise in removing pharmaceuticals, presenting a viable alternative to traditional wastewater treatment on a commercial scale.

Abstract:Environmental pollution has worsened as a result of antibiotic overuse. Nitrogen doping of biochar increases its ability to adsorb antibiotics and has been widely applied as an adsorbent. In this study, we synthesized nitrogen-doped biochar (N-A) from cocoa shell wastes calcined with urea and sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) as nitrogen sources and green activators, respectively. An analysis of the biochar morphology, structure, specific surface area, and functional groups provided an understanding of its properties. As indicated by increased surface area, micropores, and surface functional groups, biochar was enhanced in its performance for norfloxacin adsorption when activated using NaHCO3 and nitrogen doped. Adsorption experiments revealed that N-A biochar at 700 and 400 °C had a high adsorption capacity for NOR of 134 mg/g (N-A-CSB700) and 112.31 mg/g (N-A-CSB400) when compared to pristine biochar at 59.27 mg/g (CSB700) and 56.34 mg/g (CSB400), indicating that N-A doped modification on biochar greatly improved adsorption capacity. The Langmuir model demonstrated better NOR adsorption isotherms. The pseudo-second order and Elovich models closely followed the adsorption kinetics. Further investigations were conducted to determine how environmental factors influence biochar interaction with NOR. The results indicated a stable NOR removal efficiency was kept at a wide pH range, whereas the ionic strength inhibited the NOR adsorption process. The investigation into the sorption mechanism revealed that pore filling, H-bonding, π-π EDA interactions, ion exchange, and electrostatic attraction may all be implicated in the NOR adsorption process. Specifically, pore filling played the dominant role for N-A-CSB700, while N-A-CSB400 sorption occurred mainly via H-bonding. Since N-A-CSB700 doped biochar combines high adsorption capacity with a low inhibition effect of environmental factors (Na+/Ca2+), it has a high potential for future practical applications as an environmentally sustainable alternative. It uses low-cost solid waste to produce an adsorbent to cope with emerging contaminants such as antibiotics.

Abstract:Pharmaceutical wastewater has the characteristics of high organic concentration and poor biodegradability, which will cause serious environmental pollution when discharged into water bodies. In this work, naproxen sodium was used to simulate pharmaceutical wastewater by dielectric barrier discharge technology. The effects of dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) and combined catalysis on the removal of naproxen sodium solution were studied. The removal effect of naproxen sodium was affected by discharge conditions, including discharge voltage, frequency, air flow rate and electrode materials. It was found that the highest removal rate of naproxen sodium solution was 98.5%, when the discharge voltage was 7000 V, the frequency was 3333 Hz, and the air flow rate was 0.3 m 3 /h. In addition, the effect of the initial conditions of naproxen sodium solution was studied. The removal of naproxen sodium was relatively effective at low initial concentrations as well as under the condition of weak acid or near-neutral solution. However, the initial conductivity of naproxen sodium solution had little effect on the removal rate. The removal effect of naproxen sodium solution was compared by using catalyst combined with DBD plasma and DBD plasma alone. x%La/Al 2 O 3 , Mn/Al 2 O 3 and Co/Al 2 O 3 catalysts were added. The removal rate of naproxen sodium solution reached the highest after adding 14%La/Al 2 O 3 catalyst, which played the best synergistic effect. The removal rate of naproxen sodium was 18.4% higher than that without catalyst. The results showed that the combination of DBD and La/Al 2 O 3 catalyst may be a promising method to remove naproxen sodium efficiently and quickly. And this method is a new attempt to treat naproxen sodium.
