Abstract:In order to solve the problem of sealing water and bearing capacity of a connected aisle in an underwater shield tunnel, a double-circle horizontal freezing method was adopted for ground reinforcement in the connected aisle of Maliuzhou Tunnel, which is China’s first shield tunnel with superlarge diameter built in a composite stratum. This paper proposed a new double-row-pipe freezing model for the calculation of frozen wall thickness based on analytical solution to steady-state temperature field. Besides, field measurement and transient numerical studies of the active freezing period were also carried out to study the freeze-sealing effect. The results show that frozen wall thickness obtained by analytical solutions agrees well with numerical simulation results, which verifies the applicability of the newly proposed calculation method. Field analysis indicates that soil temperature gradually approaches a stable value which is far below the freezing point, and a reliable water-sealing curtain can be formed around the designed connected aisle. Maximum impact of soil excavation on the frozen wall is about 10°C, and reducing exposure time of excavation surface can effectively alleviate the weakening of frozen wall. To obtain comprehensive analysis for freezing wall thickness, a more reasonable arrangement of temperature-measuring holes is expected in future freezing engineering.

Abstract:The freezing damage of rock tunnels in cold region involves ice-water phase change and complicated interaction of Thermo–Hydro–Mechanical (THM) field. Taking the fractured rock mass of cold region tunnels as research subject, the THM coupling model of cold region tunnels was established, which is based on the seepage mechanics, heat transfer theory, damage mechanics and equivalent continuum theory. This model could reflect the anisotropic properties of deformation, water migration and heat transfer caused by the initial fracture of rock mass. The construction and operation processes of a rock tunnel in cold region were simulated, and results were compared with the measured value and predecessor's achievements. It shows that proposed model could reflect the anisotropic property of surrounding rock and the simulated deformation and stress are not symmetrical. Compared with the literature, the calculated results in this paper are closer to the measured values. The insulating layer has a significant effect on the stress of the supporting structures. The maximum tension stress of the lining is 4.5 times as that without insulating layer, and the lining will be destroyed for the overlarge tension stress.

Abstract:<p>Recently, an increasing number of tunnels have been constructed in cold regions, leading to an urgent necessity to analyse the temperature fields in these tunnels and design reasonable thermal insulation layers under ventilation. This investigation aimed to numerically obtain the actual temperature field of a cold-region tunnel and optimise the design of the thermal insulation layer considering the airflow effect. A three-dimensional numerical model of convection heat transfer was established. Model test results and field data were used to validate the numerical model. Four formulas were developed to consider the effects of airflow velocity, initial temperature, volumetric specific heat capacity, and thermal conductivity on the temperature of the surrounding rock. The results indicated that the temperature variation at the preliminary surface becomes stable in the 5th year after tunnel excavation. Meanwhile, the thermal conductivity of the surrounding rock is the most influential factor affecting the temperature of the primary lining surface, followed by the volumetric specific heat capacity, initial temperature, and airflow velocity. The initial temperature has the most pronounced effect on the temperature of the surrounding rock with a buried depth of 4 m. The effects of thermal conductivity and airflow velocity are minimal. Furthermore, the thermal resistance, rather than the thickness of the insulation layer, is recommended for assessing the freeze-proof performance. The thermal resistance of the insulation layer of a highway tunnel should be larger than 0.048 ℃/W. The optimal ratio of the thermal conductivity to the thickness of the insulation layer was observed to be 1.49.</p>

Numerical Investigation of Heat-Insulating Layers in a Cold Region Tunnel, Taking into Account Airflow and Heat Transfer

Abstract:In cold regions, heat-insulating layers play a crucial role in frost prevention in tunnels. This paper presents a numerical study on the anti-freezing behavior of a cold region tunnel (the Dege tunnel) with heat-insulating layers. A numerical model based on the temperature field coupling theory is firstly proposed and validated using field test data of the Dege tunnel. Subsequently, a comprehensive parametric study is carried out to investigate the influences of heat-insulating layers on the temperature characteristics of airflows inside the tunnel, the surrounding rock, and the tunnel lining. Furthermore, a numerical investigation based on the proposed numerical model is carried out to propose reasonable design parameters of heat-insulating layers for different velocities of mechanical ventilation, and different heat-insulating materials for cold region tunnels. The numerical results show that using the heat-insulating layer can effectively reduce the heat transfer between the surrounding rock and the airflow inside the tunnel. It is also found that the design parameters for the heat-insulating layer are greatly affected by the tunnel ventilation conditions and heat-insulating materials.

Abstract:The design of tunnels in cold regions contributes greatly to the feasibility and sustainability of highways. Based on the heat transfer mechanism of the tunnel surrounding rock–lining–air, this paper uses FEPG software to carry out secondary excavation and development, then the air heat convection calculation model is established by using a three-dimensional extension of the characteristic-based operator-splitting (CBOS) finite-element method and the explicit characteristic–Galerkin method. By coupling with the heat conduction model of the tunnel lining and surrounding rock, the heat conduction-thermal convection fluid–structure interaction finite-element calculation model of tunnels in cold regions is established. Relying on the Qinghai Hekashan tunnel project, the temperature field of the tunnel portal section is calculated and studied by employing the fluid–structure interaction finite-element model and then compared with the field monitoring results. It is found that the calculated values are basically consistent with the measured values over time, which proves the reliability of the model. The calculation results are threefold: (1) The temperature of the air, lining, and surrounding rock in the tunnel changes sinusoidally with the ambient temperature. (2) The temperature of each layer gradually lags behind, and the temperature variation amplitude of the extreme value of the layer temperature gradually decreases with the increase in the radial distance of the lining. (3) In the vicinity of the tunnel entrance, the lining temperature of each layer remains unchanged, and the temperature gradually decreases or increases with the increase in the depth. The model can be used to study and analyze the temperature field distribution law of the lining and surrounding rock under different boundary conditions, and then provide a calculation model with both research and practical value for the study of the temperature distribution law of tunnels in cold regions in the future.

Abstract:Large-scale freezing projects, especially horizontal freezing projects, suffer from the problem of long exposure times, and weakening of the frozen curtain often occurs in the excavation stage. An analytical solution for the temperature between the freezing pipe and excavation surface was deduced in this study to evaluate the freezing effect at this stage. The solution is verified by in-situ measurements of a large-scale freezing project. The analytical solution shows that the temperature is related to the thermal conductivity of the frozen curtain, the shotcrete, the refrigerant temperature, the excavation surface temperature, and the design scheme of the frozen curtain. Moreover, the excavation surface temperature ( T s ) is the critical factor. Then, the equations for the thickness and average temperature of the frozen curtain on the side close to the excavation area are derived. Numerical calculations of the frozen curtain base on analytical solution were carried out to analytical frozen curtain. The results show that when the heat dissipation of the exposed excavation surface is considered, the tensile stresses of the vault and bottom plate increase by up to 135%, the compressive stress of the sidewall increases by 29%, and the shear stress of the shoulder increases by 144%. While three solutions were proposed, and their application scenarios and effects are discussed. This study can provide a reference for the design of large-scale freezing projects to protect the frozen curtain after excavation.

Abstract:Artificial ground freezing construction under hydrodynamic conditions generally requires a longer period for the formation of a freezing curtain, bringing unique challenges in the prediction of the temperature distribution. In this study, a simple analytical formula for the steady-state temperature field in the freezing of a linear three-pipe system was derived based on the effect of multiple pipes and the principle of potential function superposition. The "partition and subsection" method was adopted to assume the freezing front shape of any single frozen steady-state temperature field in this system under hydrodynamic conditions and to further determine the temperature influence range of a single freezing pipe. To account for the effect of multiple pipes, the "superposition length ratio" was proposed to quantify the mutual effect of adjacent freezing pipes. An empirical formula for the superposition length ratio varying with different freezing pipe spacings and groundwater flow velocities was also presented. Finally, combined with a hydrothermal coupling numerical model and a linear three-pipe freezing model test under different hydrodynamic conditions, the analytical results were compared with the numerical and experimental results. The comparison results showed that the analytical model can effectively predict the steady-state temperature field of the linear three-pipe system under different hydrodynamic conditions, thus providing a theoretical basis for artificial freezing design under hydrodynamic conditions.

Abstract:The phenomena of freezing damage in the cold regional tunnels have happened frequently. Therefore, in order to precisely calculate frost heaving force ( ), based on the displacement method, a new analytical solution was proposed. The analytical solution presented in this paper was verified by the results of the model test and field measurement of , the imperfect contact effect between frozen and unfrozen zones of surrounding rock was considered and the influence of the interaction between any two factors on frost heaving force was studied by means of orthogonal experiment and analysis of variance. The results show that: (1) the inner radius of lining ( ), excavation radius ( ) and freezing radius ( ) are highly significant for and the interaction between the inner and outer radiuses of lining (i.e., changes of the size in inner and outer radius of lining) is also highly significant for frost heaving force ( ); (2) the analytical solution presented in this paper can avoid the frost heaving force ( ) with tensional property under the condition of the circular tunnel under hydrostatic pressure; and (3) sensitivity function shows that the larger Young's modulus of lining ( ), inner radius of lining ( ), freezing radius ( ), linear frost heaving rate ( ) and Young's modulus of frozen surrounding rock ( ) are, the more sensitive the factors , , , and are to . It is expected that the results of this paper can give some novel insights for the anti-freezing design of tunnels.

Abstract:Abstract Improper layout of drainage structures and inadequate insulation measures in cold tunnels can result in varying degrees of frost formation during operation. This study focuses on the Hongtoushan highway tunnel as an example, where the distribution characteristics of the temperature field around the lower drainage structure under different arrangements are investigated through indoor model testing. The results indicate that there is a significant hysteresis phenomenon in temperature changes across the cross-section as the burial depth increases. With an increase in the burial depth of the surrounding rock, the hysteresis time of temperature changes gradually elongates. The temperature variation pattern can be approximated by a cubic polynomial. In the vertical section, as the tunnel depth increases, the temperature of the surrounding rock in the lower part of the tunnel gradually rises while the amplitude of temperature change diminishes. The temperature near the centerline is relatively lower compared to the sides, where the temperature gradually increases moving away from the centerline.

Abstract:This paper takes the freezing project of the North Arch Tunnel of the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge as an example. Based on Darcy’s law and the theory of heat transfer in porous media, using the coupled module of the temperature field and seepage field in the COMSOL Multiphysics software, numerical simulations of the freezing reinforcement of the new pipe curtain freezing method are conducted to study the influence of different factors on this method under seepage conditions. The research shows that an increase in the groundwater flow velocity will affect the development of frozen soil curtains, prolonging the formation time of frozen soil curtains. A rise in the initial ground temperature will increase the time required for the formation of frozen soil curtains during the freezing process, resulting in a slight increase in the temperature of the final frozen soil curtains. With an increase in the salinity of the groundwater, the temperature at the temperature measurement point upstream of the freezing pipe increases, while the temperature at the temperature measurement point downstream of the freezing pipe decreases. The average temperature of the frozen soil curtain also increases with an increase in the salinity of the groundwater. This study is expected to provide a valuable reference for similar projects in the future.

Abstract:Frost damage is a frequent occurrence in cold regions and can threaten the normal use and structural stability of tunnel engineering projects. To accurately determine the frost heaving force and effectively evaluate the frost damage in cold-region tunnels, an analytical solution for the frost heaving force considering the freeze-thaw (F-T) damage and transversely isotropic characteristics of surrounding rock is presented based on complex variable theory and the power series method. The calculation results indicate that the frost heaving force acts on the lining considering that the transversely isotropic characteristics of surrounding rock are significantly greater than those when assuming the surrounding rock is homogeneous isotropic media. This demonstrates that the transversely isotropic characteristics of surrounding rock have a considerable impact on the frost heaving force and should be considered. The frost heaving force continuously increases as the bedding angle increases from 0° to 90°, and the maximum frost heaving force in the Guanjiao tunnel (the rock mass bedding angle is 30°) of the Xining-Geermu Railway in China is approximately 1.04 MPa. In addition, the influence of F-T cycles on the frost heaving force in cold-region tunnels is investigated based on the analytical solution of the frost heaving force proposed in this paper. The frost heaving force acting on the lining decreases with an increasing number of F-T cycles due to the deterioration of the mechanical parameters of the surrounding rock.

Abstract:The damage caused by the frost heaving pressure on the surrounding rocks and lining structure of cold-region tunnels is always common, which can seriously threaten the safety and stability for cold-region tunnels. Although many achievements of frost heave pressure model have been obtained, two factors have been often ignored, which are in-situ stress and freeze-thaw cycles. Therefore, the calculation mechanical model of coldregion tunnels is established and the expression of frost heaving pressure considering frost heaving effect and in-situ stress is derived based on the elastic theory. The relationship between the elastic modulus of surrounding rocks and the number of freeze-thaw cycles was fitted by experimental data and the calculation formula of frost heaving rate of rocks considering their porosity change caused by freeze-thaw cycles is derived. Based on that, the calculation method of frost heaving pressure considering in-situ stress and freeze-thaw cycles is proposed. The example analysis results show that frost heaving ratio and frost heaving pressure gradually increase with freeze-thaw cycles, which are eventually subjected to a steady value. Simultaneously, the frost heaving pressure acting on lining increases with in-situ stress for tunnels in cold regions and some effective insulation measures should be applied to prevent frost damage. Abstract:The artificial ground freezing method has been widely used in shield tunneling breakthrough working shafts. The freezing effect was mainly considered in the previous research, and the heat generation of the shield machine was not considered, which has great influence in actual engineering. In this paper, a coupling calculation model, considering phase change latent heat, is establishes that by containing the freezing process and heat generation of the shield machine, the model is verified. A numerical simulation is carried out for several working conditions that may occur in actual projects, and the following conclusions are obtained. Although the heat dissipated by the normal tunneling of the shield machine will melt the frozen soil curtain that originally meets the design requirements, the thickness of the frozen soil curtain after melting cannot reach the initial design, though it is still within the safe range. In the process of a continuous rotation working condition, the bottom and sides of a cup-shaped frozen soil curtain are partially melted in the early 6 day stay of the shield machine, and the thickness is reduced to a relatively stable value of 0.8 m. In a temporary shutdown working condition, when the contact surface temperature between the shield machine shell and the frozen soil drops to −12 °C after almost 4 days of shutdown, the shield machine may not keep tunneling forward due to the freezing effect. The research results will benefit the freezing design and management of the shield tunneling breakthrough working shaft under extreme conditions.

Abstract:In frozen regions, especially metro tunnel portal sections, which are vulnerable to an externally low-temperature atmosphere, would lead to frozen damage affecting traffic safety. To clarify how the air temperature field at tunnel portal sections varies with periodically changing atmospheric temperature, a site test was conducted on Metro Line 1 in Hohhot in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, and the basic heat transfer equation and principle of energy conservation were introduced to establish a basic theoretical model, which was compared with the results from other regions. By comparison with testing results in other regions, the theoretical model was essentially consistent with the variation rules of the tested temperature. Therefore, the research could theoretically direct the heat preservation and freeze prevention of key facilities and equipment in metro tunnel portal sections in frozen regions.

Abstract:To fully understand the temperature distribution of cold regions and the variation law of temperature fields in cold-region tunnels, this paper presents a case-history study on a tunnel located on the eastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, China. The conclusion is as follows: the temperature outside the tunnel and the ambient temperature are affected by wind speed and light. The law of the temperature field in the tunnel is greatly affected by wind speed and wind direction. According to the field test, the wind speed in the tunnel is about 2.8 m/s in winter, and the daily average temperature at the exit of the tunnel is basically lower than that at the entrance. From the central to the entrance, the temperature in the tunnel decreases by 0.11°C every 10 meters along the longitudinal direction; from the central to the exit, the temperature in the tunnel increases by 0.07°C every 10 meters. In this regard, for the problems of lining frost damage and central drainage pipe freezing, it is suggested to adopt the way of heating and drainage, but heating the freezing area outside the drainage pipe should be avoided. The test results can provide references for the design, construction, and research of the temperature field of the tunnel antifreezing system in the cold region. It is hoped that the test results can be useful in the design and construction of frost damage prevention systems and the investigation of temperature fields in cold-region tunnels.

Abstract:In deep tunnels traversing fractured water-rich strata, surface water descend, heats up at depth, and then rises into the tunnel, resulting in a 'thermal water-bearing' tunnel. This paper investigates the transient temperature evolution of such tunnels through laboratory-scale model experiment and numerical simulation, considering the convective heat transfer of thermal water in the surrounding rock. The experimental model was designed using similarity criteria derived from the equation analysis method. The 3D numerical model simulates the interaction between thermal water-saturated surrounding rock and tunnel airflow. The thermal field of the surrounding rock accounts for the coupling effects of the flow field, which follows Darcy's law. The tunnel airflow is governed by the RANS (Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes) equations and the k−ω turbulence model, combined with the LRNM (Low-Reynolds Number Modeling) method for near-wall treatment. This approach is coupled with the energy balance equation to calculate the airflow temperature. The numerical model is validated using monitoring data from experimental measurements of grouted tunnel wall and airflow temperatures. Finally, parameter studies are conducted for both ungrouted and grouted tunnels, demonstrating the effectiveness of grouting in controlling airflow temperature by blocking thermal water.

Abstract:Artificial ground freezing is a widely used, reliable method for excavation in water-bearing ground. The questions posed in the thermal design of ground freezing projects require solving moving boundary (Stefan) problems. Approximate analytical solutions, such as the ones by Ständer 1 and Sanger and Sayles, 2 have been developed for thermal engineering design and are used by practitioners across the industry. For instance, Sanger & Sayles' solution is widely used for the single-freeze-pipe problem, but it has proven to be of limited accuracy. 3 In the present paper, an adjustment to this formula is proposed based on the re-evaluation of their empirical assumption that the ratio between the temperature penetration depth and the phase-change radius equals a constant value of 3 regardless the conditions. A sensitivity study is performed using a verified numerical model as a benchmark to study several problems with different initial and boundary conditions (initial, phase change and freeze pipe temperatures) and thermal properties of the ground (water content, thermal conductivity and heat capacity). This is done for the freezing times of 10 and 365 days, in order to consider the potential change of the ratio with the freezing time. In this way, a calibrated formula is proposed to find appropriate values of this ratio and a suitable adjustment to Sanger & Sayles' solution is determined. Adjusting Sanger & Sayles' solution in this manner, a significantly higher and more consistent accuracy is achieved for different boundary and initial conditions. This accuracy improvement was checked for real conditions from an engineering project, which shows that the adjustment can be useful for thermal problems in engineering design of ground freezing.
Analytical Solution of Frost Heaving Force and Stress Distribution in Cold Region Tunnels under Non-Axisymmetric Stress and Transversely Isotropic Frost Heave of Surrounding Rock

Abstract:Accurate evaluation of the frost heaving force and stress distribution plays an essential role in frost damage prevention design of cold region tunnels. To ensure the safe operation of tunnels in cold regions and develop new practical method for their design, an analytical solution of frost heaving force and stress distribution in cold region tunnels under non-axisymmetric stress and transversely isotropic frost heave of surrounding rock is established. The solution is of urgent demand because the tunnel sites with significant difference between horizontal and vertical initial ground stresses are frequently encountered. In analysis, the mechanical process is considered as two steps based on the linear superposition principle of elasticity theory. In step 1, the frozen zone freezes and expands without constraint first, and in step 2 the frost heaving displacement of the frozen zone is then inhibited by lining and unfrozen surrounding rock to reach a final balance state. The stress and displacement distributions of the above two steps are derived first, and then the solution of frost heaving force and stress is determined by boundary conditions. The analytical solution is verified with the existing solution under the axisymmetric stress condition. Furthermore, the stress distribution and the increment of stress in lining and surrounding rock induced by frost heave are analyzed. Finally, the influence of the related factors on stress distribution is analyzed. Results show that the increment of the stress in lining and surrounding rock significantly vary with the lateral pressure coefficient and the anisotropic frost heave coefficient, which demonstrates that the non-axisymmetric stress and the transversely isotropic frost heave of surrounding rock have considerable impact on the stress distribution and should be considered.

Abstract:The technology of artificial horizontal freezing method is increasingly being used in the soil reinforcement of urban underground projects such as shield-driven tunnelling. Compared with the freezing process, the thawing process is more complicated, and the thawing behavior of artificial frozen soil surrounding shield-driven tunnels has not been well investigated in both the academic and industrial domains. This study, therefore, aims to investigate the natural thawing heat transfer behavior of artificial horizontal frozen soil in shield-driven tunnelling using a three-dimensional finite element method. The finite element modelling is based on the horizontal freezing reinforcement project of Chating Station to Jiqingmen Station Tunnel in the Nanjing Metro Line 2. Validation between finite element results and site measured results is firstly conducted. The natural thawing temperature field contours as well as the radial and longitudinal distributions of natural thawing temperature in the frozen soil surrounding the tunnel are then explicitly examined. Furthermore, sensitivity analysis of influencing factors such as the thermal conductivity, latent heat of phase change, ambient temperature inside tunnel, freezing time, and original ground temperature is carried out. The results and findings of this study may enrich the current limited database and enable a better understanding of natural thawing heat transfer behavior of artificial frozen soil in shield-driven tunnelling.

Abstract:Because of difficulty in mathematic solution, analysis of surrounding rock stress of shallow buried tunnel considering seepage force has always been a difficult problem. Seepage body force is introduced into governing equations and boundary conditions of an elastic plane. Then traditional complex variable method is expanded for the analysis of plane strain problems in relation to an elastic plane considering seepage effect. Subsequently, explicit analytical solutions of seepage field and stress field of a shallow underwater tunnel excavated in an elastic rock mass with uniform distribution of pressure and total water head on tunnel boundary as well as stress free on ground surface are derived. The analytical solutions are validated by numerical simulations and can be used to analyse stress variations of surrounding rock mass under seepage effect. Based on an example, influence of buried depth and water head difference between ground surface and tunnel boundary on the circumferential effective stress around the tunnel are discussed. It is found that directions of major and minor principal stress will exchange with each other with increase of total water head difference between ground surface and tunnel boundary, and stress distribution around tunnel tend to be uniform with increase of buried depth.
