This essay presents the state‐of‐the‐art development of PEN for the unique properties of nanomaterials with unconventional phases and their applications in energy storage and conversion and catalytic reactions. Finally, personal perspectives on the challenges and future opportunities of PEN in various applications are also provided.</p>

Abstract:As a key structural parameter, phase depicts the arrangement of atoms in materials. Normally, a nanomaterial exists in its thermodynamically stable crystal phase. With the development of nanotechnology, nanomaterials with unconventional crystal phases, which rarely exist in their bulk counterparts, or amorphous phase have been prepared using carefully controlled reaction conditions. Together these methods are beginning to enable phase engineering of nanomaterials (PEN), i.e. , the synthesis of nanomaterials with unconventional phases and the transformation between different phases, to obtain desired properties and functions. This Review summarizes the research progress in the field of PEN. First, we present representative strategies for the direct synthesis of unconventional phases and modulation of phase transformation in diverse kinds of nanomaterials. We cover the synthesis of nanomaterials ranging from metal nanostructures such as Au, Ag, Cu, Pd, and Ru, and their alloys; metal oxides, borides, and carbides; to transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) and 2D layered materials. We review synthesis and growth methods ranging from wet-chemical reduction and seed-mediated epitaxial growth to chemical vapor deposition (CVD), high pressure phase transformation, and electron and ion-beam irradiation. After that, we summarize the significant influence of phase on the various properties of unconventional-phase nanomaterials. We also discuss the potential applications of the developed unconventional-phase nanomaterials in different areas including catalysis, electrochemical energy storage (batteries and supercapacitors), solar cells, optoelectronics, and sensing. Finally, we discuss existing challenges and future research directions in PEN.

Abstract:Crystal phase, a critical structural characteristic beyond the morphology, size, dimension, facet, etc., determines the physicochemical properties of nanomaterials. As a group of layered nanomaterials with polymorphs, transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have attracted intensive research attention due to their phase-dependent properties. Therefore, great efforts have been devoted to the phase engineering of TMDs to synthesize TMDs with controlled phases, especially unconventional/metastable phases, for various applications in electronics, optoelectronics, catalysis, biomedicine, energy storage and conversion, and ferroelectrics. Considering the significant progress in the synthesis and applications of TMDs, we believe that a comprehensive review on the phase engineering of TMDs is critical to promote their fundamental studies and practical applications. This Review aims to provide a comprehensive introduction and discussion on the crystal structures, synthetic strategies, and phase-dependent properties and applications of TMDs. Finally, our perspectives on the challenges and opportunities in phase engineering of TMDs will also be discussed.

Abstract:Phase transformation of two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials can lead to significant changes in electronic and optical properties, which enables the development of novel applications. Effective strategies for phase engineering of 2D nanomaterials have drawn considerable attention in recent years. This review focuses on the state-of-the-art progress in the phase transformation of 2D nanomaterials and their catalytic applications. First, the basic concepts of phase transformation and the outstanding electronic and optical properties induced by phase transformation are briefly introduced. Second, different strategies for achieving phase transformation are discussed in detail and classified into several types based on their characteristics, including (i) doping, (ii) external fields, (iii) optical irradiation, (iv) strain effect, (v) high-energy particle excitation, and (vi) thermal post-processing. The applications of 2D nanomaterials in catalysis based on phase transformation have also been discussed. Finally, a summary of the technical challenges to phase control in 2D nanomaterials and potential opportunities for developing novel applications is presented.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials have attracted increasing interest because of their compelling physicochemical properties and promising applications. Recent studies have demonstrated that phases of nanomaterials could significantly affect their properties and applications because of the distinct atomic arrangements. Besides crystalline phases, the amorphous nanomaterials, which lack long-range atomic ordering, and heterophase nanostructures consisting of more than one phase have also shown enhanced performances in some specific applications. Recently, with the rapid development in phase engineering of nanomaterials (PEN), the controlled synthesis of 2D nanomaterials with unconventional phases and the exploration of phase-dependent properties and applications have been witnessed. In this perspective, we briefly summarize the research progress on 2D nanomaterials with unconventional phases, including unconventional crystal phases, amorphous phase, and heterophase. On the basis of different material categories, we highlight their synthetic methodologies, unique structures, and intriguing properties. Finally, we provide personal insights on challenges and potential research opportunities in this emerging field.

Abstract:Phase nanoengineering is an emerging approach to nanofabrication based on the direct, localized, and tunable modification of the material electronic, magnetic, or optical properties. In this paper, the methodology is discussed, giving an overview of the specific applications in different fields of material science and technology. Furthermore, the challenges and future perspectives are highlighted. Nanomaterials derive their electronic, magnetic, and optical properties from their specific nanostructure. In most cases, nanostructured materials and their properties are defined during the materials growth, and nanofabrication techniques, such as lithography, are employed subsequently for device fabrication. Herein, a perspective is presented on a different approach for creating nanomaterials and devices where, after growth, advanced nanofabrication techniques are used to directly nanostructure condensed matter systems, by inducing highly controlled, localized, and stable changes in the electronic, magnetic, or optical properties. Then, advantages, limitations, applications in materials science and technology are highlighted, and future perspectives are discussed.

Abstract:Crystalline polymorphs have been considered a prevailing phenomenon in inorganic nanocrystals and provide approaches to modulate fundamental properties and innovative advanced applications. As a basic demand for phase engineering, accessible and controllable synthetic methodologies are indispensable for acquisition of high-quality products in expected phases. Phase stability is also a non-negligible issue that determines continuous gains of functionality and long-term sustainability of characteristic features. Maintaining structural stability of metastable phases provides challenges and opportunities for investigations on fascinating properties and intriguing applications of inorganic nanocrystals. Phase engineering is of great significance to acquire metallic (1T) and semiconducting (2H) Mo- and W-based dichalcogenides for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and CO, reduction reaction (CO2RR), respectively. The catalysts in IT phase have superior electron transfer kinetics and abundant active sites on both basal planes and edges for HER, while ones in 2H phase are preferentially deployed for CO2RR to utilize edge sites for catalysis and restrain competitive HER activity. In addition, the photocatalytic performance for HER has been enhanced by combining anatase and rutile phases because electron transfer between the two phases during photocatalysis facilitates the separation of charge carriers and thus impedes the recombination of electron hole pairs. Although ample effort has been devoted to developing phase engineering, principle understanding at an ultrathin scale remains obscure. In this Account, we provide comprehensive insight into work from our group regarding controllable synthesis of inorganic nanocrystals with phase engineering, critical effects on phase stability, and noteworthy studies on phase-related properties and applications. For bulk materials, phase control and transition have a large energy barrier, so they can only be achieved under rigorous conditions. However, at the initial stage of synthesis, especially for nucleation, there are a small quantity of chemical bonds that contribute to regulate phase and structure with ease. In our work, we mainly modulate nucleation and growth at an ultrathin scale to demonstrate facile approaches for phase engineering. This unique perspective makes for a distinct guidance of controllable synthesis and deliberate stabilization of inorganic nanomaterials with phase engineering. We have developed a series of synthetic strategies for phase engineering to fabricate inorganic nanocrystals in a specific phase with controlled size and composition and adjustable morphologies and surface features. Four sorts of models (MoS2, ZrO2, H2O3, and TiO2) are used for demonstrating finely tuned growth at an ultrathin scale. However, phase engineering has been regarded as immature because only one phase in polymorphs is thermodynamically stable generally. Phase stability of metastable nanocrystals has attracted much interest. Our substantial investigations illustrate several crucial factors on phase stability, leading to inspiration for facilitating persistent emergence of characteristics and functionalities. By full use of the features of a specific phase, we spotlight ligand-induced surface interactions on coverage-dependent electronic structures and chemisorption effects at one-unit thickness of TiO2(B) nanomaterials with phase engineering. Meanwhile, an energy conversion system for overall water splitting (OWS) drives forward steps in function-oriented synthesis of MoS2-based nanomaterials with phase engineering. In the last section, we summarize this theme and highlight several promising directions for future development.

Abstract:In situ tailoring of two-dimensional materials' phases under external stimulus facilitates the manipulation of their properties for electronic, quantum and energy applications. However, current methods are mainly limited to the transitions among phases with unchanged chemical stoichiometry. Here we propose on-device phase engineering that allows us to realize various lattice phases with distinct chemical stoichiometries. Using palladium and selenide as a model system, we show that a PdSe2 channel with prepatterned Pd electrodes can be transformed into Pd17Se15 and Pd4Se by thermally tailoring the chemical composition ratio of the channel. Different phase configurations can be obtained by precisely controlling the thickness and spacing of the electrodes. The device can be thus engineered to implement versatile functions in situ, such as exhibiting superconducting behaviour and achieving ultralow-contact resistance, as well as customizing the synthesis of electrocatalysts. The proposed on-device phase engineering approach exhibits a universal mechanism and can be expanded to 29 element combinations between a metal and chalcogen. Our work highlights on-device phase engineering as a promising research approach through which to exploit fundamental properties as well as their applications.

Abstract:Solid-state phase transformation is an intriguing phenomenon in crystalline or noncrystalline solids due to the distinct physical and chemical properties that can be obtained and modified by phase engineering. Compared to bulk solids, nanomaterials exhibit enhanced capability for phase engineering due to their small sizes and high surface-to-volume ratios, facilitating various emerging applications. To establish a comprehensive atomistic understanding of phase engineering, in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques have emerged as powerful tools, providing unprecedented atomic-resolution imaging, multiple characterization and stimulation mechanisms, and real-time integrations with various external fields. In this Review, we present a comprehensive overview of recent advances in in situ TEM studies to characterize and modulate nanomaterials for phase transformations under different stimuli, including mechanical, thermal, electrical, environmental, optical, and magnetic factors. We briefly introduce crystalline structures and polymorphism and then summarize phase stability and phase transformation models. The advanced experimental setups of in situ techniques are outlined and the advantages of in situ TEM phase engineering are highlighted, as demonstrated via several representative examples. Besides, the distinctive properties that can be obtained from in situ phase engineering are presented. Finally, current challenges and future research opportunities, along with their potential applications, are suggested.

Abstract:Discovery of novel phases and their associated transitions in low-dimensional nanoscale systems is of central interest as the origin of emergent phenomena and new device paradigms. Although typical ferroelectrics such as PbTiO3 exhibit diverse phase transition sequences, the conventional incompatible mechanisms of ferroelectricity and magnetism keep them as simply nonmagnetic phases, despite the immense practical prospective of multiferroics in novel functional devices. Here, we demonstrate using density function theory that PbTiO3 nanodots exhibit unconventional multiferroic phase transitions. The nanosize and nonstoichiometric effects intrinsic to nanodots bring about the coexistence of ferromagnetism with the host electric polarization, mediated by the termination and surface morphology. We also predict the key features of the size-dependent phase diagram of nanodots that involve a rich sequence of ferroelectric-multiferroic-ferromagnetic/nonmagnetic (FE-MF-FM/NM) multiferroic phase transitions. The present work thus provides an avenue to realizing multiferroics and multifunctional oxides in low-dimensional systems.

Abstract:Gold (Au), a transition metal with an atomic number of 79 in the periodic table of elements, was discovered in approximately 3000 B.C. Due to the ultrahigh chemical stability and brilliant golden color, Au had long been thought to be a most inert material and was widely utilized in art, jewelry, and finance. However, it has been found that Au becomes exceptionally active as a catalyst when its size shrinks to the nanometer scale. With continuous efforts toward the exploration of catalytic applications over the past decades, Au nanomaterials show critical importance in many catalytic processes. Besides catalysis, Au nanomaterials also possess other promising applications in plasmonics, sensing, biology and medicine, due to their unique localized surface plasmon resonance, intriguing biocompatibility, and superior stability. Unfortunately, the practical applications of Au nanomaterials could be limited because of the scarce reserves and high price of Au. Therefore, it is quite essential to further explore novel physicochemical properties and functions of Au nanomaterials so as to enhance their performance in different types of applications.Recently, phase engineering of nanomaterials (PEN), which involves the rearrangement of atoms in the unit cell, has emerged as a fantastic and effective strategy to adjust the intrinsic physicochemical properties of nanomaterials. In this Account, we give an overview of the recent progress on crystal phase control of Au nanomaterials using wet-chemical synthesis. Starting from a brief introduction of the research background, we first describe the development history of wet-chemical synthesis of Au nanomaterials and especially emphasize the key research findings. Subsequently, we introduce the typical Au nanomaterials with untraditional crystal phases and heterophases that have been observed, such as 2H, 4H, body-centered phases, and crystal-phase heterostructures. Importantly, crystal phase control of Au nanomaterials by wet-chemical synthesis is systematically described. After that, we highlight the importance of crystal phase control in Au nanomaterials by demonstrating the remarkable effect of crystal phases on their physicochemical properties (e.g., electronic and optical properties) and potential applications (e.g., catalysis). Finally, after a concise summary of recent advances in this emerging research field, some personal perspectives are provided on the challenges, opportunities, and research directions in the future.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Electrochemical phase transition is important in a range of processes, including gas generation in fuel cells and electrolyzers, as well as in electrodeposition in battery and metal production. Nucleation is the first step in these phase transition reactions. A deep understanding of the structure, kinetics, and mechanism of the nucleation and the structure of the nucleation sites is fundamentally important. In this perspective, the theories and methods of studying electrochemical nucleation are briefly reviewed, with an emphasis on nanoelectrochemistry and single-entity electrochemistry approaches. Perspectives on open questions and potential future approaches are also discussed.

Abstract:Phase engineering is an emerging strategy for tuning the electronic states and catalytic functions of nanomaterials. Great interest has recently been captured by phase-engineered photocatalysts, including the unconventional phase, amorphous phase, and heterophase. Phase engineering of photocatalytic materials (including semiconductors and cocatalysts) can effectively affect the light absorption range, charge separation efficiency, or surface redox reactivity, resulting in different catalytic behavior. The applications for phase-engineered photocatalysts are widely reported, for example, hydrogen evolution, oxygen evolution, CO2 reduction, and organic pollutant removal. This review will firstly provide a critical insight into the classification of phase engineering for photocatalysis. Then, the state-of-the-art development of phase engineering toward photocatalytic reactions will be presented, focusing on the synthesis and characterization methodologies for unique phase structure and the correlation between phase structure and photocatalytic performance. Finally, personal understanding of the current opportunities and challenges of phase engineering for photocatalysis will also be provided.

Abstract:Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) possess a large number of two‐dimensional (2D) materials with novel physical and chemical properties and hold great potential applications in electronic devices, optical devices as well as catalysts. TMDs usually have poly‐phases, such as 2H, 3R and 1T. Chemical and physical properties, including electrical conductivity, superconductivity, magnetism and catalytic activity, are different for different phases of TMDs. Therefore, great efforts have been made to obtain a specific pure phase of 2D TMD materials. Here, we review the recent phase engineering research for 2D TMDs, including ion insertion, alloying, temperature, defects, strain and electric field.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) materials with multiphase, multielement crystals such as transition metal chalcogenides (TMCs) (based on V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Cd, Pt and Pd) and transition metal phosphorous chalcogenides (TMPCs) offer a unique platform to explore novel physical phenomena. However, the synthesis of a single-phase/single-composition crystal of these 2D materials via chemical vapour deposition is still challenging. Here we unravel a competitive-chemical-reaction-based growth mechanism to manipulate the nucleation and growth rate. Based on the growth mechanism, 67 types of TMCs and TMPCs with a defined phase, controllable structure and tunable component can be realized. The ferromagnetism and superconductivity in FeX y can be tuned by the y value, such as superconductivity observed in FeX and ferromagnetism in FeS 2 monolayers, demonstrating the high quality of as-grown 2D materials. This work paves the way for the multidisciplinary exploration of 2D TMPCs and TMCs with unique properties.

Abstract:Crystal phase engineering on photocatalytic materials is a subfield of photocatalysis with intensive research, which has been proven as a versatile approach to maneuver their performance for applications in energy- and environment-related fields. In this article, the state-of-the-art progress on phase-engineered photocatalytic materials is reviewed. Firstly, we discuss the phase engineering on pristine semiconductor photocatalysts, in which the phase-dependent light absorption, charge transfer and separation, and surface reaction behaviors in photocatalytic processes are summarized, respectively. Based on the elucidated mechanisms, the implementation of phase junctions in photocatalytic reactions is then presented. As a focus, we highlight the rational design of phase junctions toward steering the charge kinetics for enhanced photocatalytic and photoelectrocatalytic performance. Moreover, the crystal phase engineering on semiconductor-based hybrid photocatalysts is also introduced, which underlines the importance of choosing a suitable phase for semiconductor components and co-catalysts as well as the synergism of different semiconductor phases for improved photocatalytic performance. Finally, the challenges and perspectives in this research field are proposed. In this review, particular emphasis is placed on establishing a linkage between crystal phase and photocatalytic activity to develop a structure-activity guide. Based on the guide, a framework is suggested for future research on the rational phase design of photocatalysts for improved performance in energy and environmental applications.
