Abstract:Metal nanocrystals with concave surfaces are interesting for a wide variety of applications that are related to catalysis, plasmonics, and surface-enhanced spectroscopy. This interest arises from their high-index facets, surface cavities, and sharp corners/edges. Two major challenges are associated with this novel class of nanocrystals: 1) how to generate a concave surface with negative curvature, which is not favored by thermodynamics owing to its higher energy than the convex counterpart; and 2) how to stabilize the morphology of a nanocrystal with concave structures on the surface. Recently, a number of different procedures have been developed for the synthesis of noble-metal nanocrystals with concave surfaces. This Review provides a brief account of these developments, with the aim of offering new insights into the growth mechanisms. We focus on methods based on two general strategies: 1) site-specific dissolution through etching and galvanic replacement; and 2) directionally controlled overgrowth by facet-selective capping, kinetic control, and template-directed epitaxy. Their enhanced catalytic and electrocatalytic properties are also described.

Abstract:Noble-metal nanocrystals are essential to applications in a variety of areas, including catalysis, electronics, and photonics. Despite the large number of reports, there still exists a gap between academic studies and industrial applications due to the lack of ability to produce the nanocrystals in large quantities while still maintaining the good uniformity and precise controls. Because the nucleation and growth of colloidal nanocrystals are highly sensitive to experimental conditions, it is impractical to scale up their production by simply increasing the reaction volume. Here we report a new and practical approach based on milliliter-sized droplet reactors to the scalable production of nanocrystals. The droplets of 0.25 mL in volume were produced as a continuous flow in a fluidic device assembled from commercially available components. As a proof of concept, we have synthesized Pd, Au, and Pd-M (M = Au, Pt, and Ag) nanocrystals with controlled sizes, shapes, compositions, and structures on a scale of 1-10 g per hour (e.g., 3.6 g per hour for Pd cubes of 10 nm in edge length).
Robust Phase Control Through Hetero-Seeded Epitaxial Growth for Face-Centered Cubic Pt@Ru Nanotetrahedrons with Superior Hydrogen Electro-Oxidation Activity

Abstract:Controllable synthesis of metallic nanocrystals (NCs) with tunable phase, uniform shape, and size is of multidisciplinary interests but has still remained challenging. Herein, a robust phase control strategy is developed, in which seeds with a given phase are added to guide the epitaxial growth of the target metal to inherit the seeds phase. Through this strategy, M@Ru (M = Pt, Pd) NCs in the face-centered cubic (fcc) phase, a metastable phase for Ru under ambient conditions, were synthesized with the hydrothermal method. The Pt@Ru NCs showed not only the pure fcc phase but also high morphology selectivity to tetrahedrons surrounded by {111} facets. As revealed by density function theory (DFT) calculations, the preferentially epitaxial growth of Ru atom layers on the nonclosest-packed facets of hetero fcc metal seeds led to the formation of fcc Ru shells. Furthermore, the fcc Pt@Ru tetrahedrons/C showed electrocatalytic activity enhancement with more than an order of magnitude toward hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) in acidic electrolyte compared with hydrothermally synthesized Ru/C. Electrochemical measurement combined with DFT calculations revealed that the optimum HOR activity should be achieved on well-crystallized fcc Ru catalysts exposing maximum {111} facets.

Abstract:Crystal-phase engineering offers opportunities for the rational design and synthesis of noble metal nanomaterials with unusual crystal phases that normally do not exist in bulk materials. However, it remains a challenge to use these materials as seeds to construct heterometallic nanostructures with desired crystal phases and morphologies for promising applications such as catalysis. Here, we report a strategy for the synthesis of binary and ternary hybrid noble metal nanostructures. Our synthesized crystal-phase heterostructured 4H/fcc Au nanowires enable the epitaxial growth of Ru nanorods on the 4H phase and fcc-twin boundary in Au nanowires, resulting in hybrid Au–Ru nanowires. Moreover, the method can be extended to the epitaxial growth of Rh, Ru–Rh and Ru–Pt nanorods on the 4H/fcc Au nanowires to form unique hybrid nanowires. Importantly, the Au–Ru hybrid nanowires with tunable compositions exhibit excellent electrocatalytic performance towards the hydrogen evolution reaction in alkaline media.

Abstract:Abstract Noble metals have been extensively studied owing to their high chemical stability and outstanding catalytic properties in various important reactions. However, their large‐scale application of noble metals is still challenged by their high expense and scarcity on the earth, as well as the yet insufficient activity to give a satisfying performance. For decades, enormous research efforts have been devoted to the nanoengineering of noble metal nanocrystals, such as the size‐, composition‐, shape‐, and/or morphology‐controlled syntheses, and impressive advances have been achieved. Meanwhile, the discovery that the crystal structure of noble metal nanocrystals also has a significant impact on their properties opened a new pathway that modulates the crystal phases of noble metals to achieve better properties. Among the feasible methods for crystal phase transformation, the presence of strain is not negligible. Strain generally has two roles: the driving force of the phase transformation and/or the origin of the distinct properties of the new crystal structure. Strain effect on noble metals has also been extensively studied due to its capability of fine‐tuning the surface catalytic activity. Therefore, combining the two hot research trends together, a possible research pathway is emerging. That is, utilizing the potential synergistic effect between novel crystal phases and the subsequent lattice strain to boost the performance of noble metal nanocrystal even further. Herein, a brief summary of the currently discovered noble metal phases and strain effect and the introduction of strain related phase modulation techniques along with the catalytic applications will be presented. Abstract:Noble nanometals are of significance in both scientific interest and technological applications, which are usually obtained by conventional wet-chemical synthesis. Organic surfactants are always used in the synthesis to prevent unexpected overgrowth and aggregation of noble nanometals. However, the surfactants are hard to remove and may interfere with plasmonic and catalytic studies, remaining surfactant-free synthesis of noble nanometals a challenge. Herein, we report an approach to epitaxial growth of size-controlled noble nanometals on MXenes. As piloted by density functional theory calculations, along with work function experimental determination, kinetic and spectroscopic studies, epitaxial growth of noble nanometals is initiated via a mechanism that involves an in situ redox reaction. In the redox, MXenes as two-dimensional solid reductants whose work functions are compatible with the reduction potentials of noble metal cations, enable spontaneous donation of electrons from the MXenes to noble metal cations and reduce the cations into nanoscale metallic metals on the outmost surface of MXenes. Neither surfactants nor external reductants are used during the whole synthesis process, which addresses a long-standing interference issue of surfactant and external reductant in the conventional wet-chemical synthesis. Moreover, the MXenes induced noble nanometals are size-controlled. Impressively, noble nanometals firmly anchored on MXenes exhibit excellent performance towards surface enhanced Raman scattering. Our developed strategy will promote the nanostructure-controlled synthesis of noble nanometals, offering new opportunities to further improve advanced functional properties towards practical applications.

Abstract:At the forefront of nanochemistry, there exists a research endeavor centered around intermetallic nanocrystals, which are unique in terms of long-range atomic ordering, well-defined stoichiometry, and controlled crystal structure. In contrast to alloy nanocrystals with no elemental ordering, it is challenging to synthesize intermetallic nanocrystals with a tight control over their size and shape. Here, recent progress in the synthesis of intermetallic nanocrystals with controllable sizes and well-defined shapes is highlighted. A simple analysis and some insights key to the selection of experimental conditions for generating intermetallic nanocrystals are presented, followed by examples to highlight the viable use of intermetallic nanocrystals as electrocatalysts or catalysts for various reactions, with a focus on the enhanced performance relative to their alloy counterparts that lack elemental ordering. Within the conclusion, perspectives on future developments in the context of synthetic control, structure-property relationships, and applications are discussed.

Abstract:Gold (Au), a transition metal with an atomic number of 79 in the periodic table of elements, was discovered in approximately 3000 B.C. Due to the ultrahigh chemical stability and brilliant golden color, Au had long been thought to be a most inert material and was widely utilized in art, jewelry, and finance. However, it has been found that Au becomes exceptionally active as a catalyst when its size shrinks to the nanometer scale. With continuous efforts toward the exploration of catalytic applications over the past decades, Au nanomaterials show critical importance in many catalytic processes. Besides catalysis, Au nanomaterials also possess other promising applications in plasmonics, sensing, biology and medicine, due to their unique localized surface plasmon resonance, intriguing biocompatibility, and superior stability. Unfortunately, the practical applications of Au nanomaterials could be limited because of the scarce reserves and high price of Au. Therefore, it is quite essential to further explore novel physicochemical properties and functions of Au nanomaterials so as to enhance their performance in different types of applications.Recently, phase engineering of nanomaterials (PEN), which involves the rearrangement of atoms in the unit cell, has emerged as a fantastic and effective strategy to adjust the intrinsic physicochemical properties of nanomaterials. In this Account, we give an overview of the recent progress on crystal phase control of Au nanomaterials using wet-chemical synthesis. Starting from a brief introduction of the research background, we first describe the development history of wet-chemical synthesis of Au nanomaterials and especially emphasize the key research findings. Subsequently, we introduce the typical Au nanomaterials with untraditional crystal phases and heterophases that have been observed, such as 2H, 4H, body-centered phases, and crystal-phase heterostructures. Importantly, crystal phase control of Au nanomaterials by wet-chemical synthesis is systematically described. After that, we highlight the importance of crystal phase control in Au nanomaterials by demonstrating the remarkable effect of crystal phases on their physicochemical properties (e.g., electronic and optical properties) and potential applications (e.g., catalysis). Finally, after a concise summary of recent advances in this emerging research field, some personal perspectives are provided on the challenges, opportunities, and research directions in the future.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Epitaxial growth is one of the most commonly used strategies to precisely tailor heterostructures with well-defined compositions, morphologies, crystal phases, and interfaces for various applications. However, as epitaxial growth requires a small interfacial lattice mismatch between the components, it remains a challenge for the epitaxial synthesis of heterostructures constructed by materials with large lattice mismatch and/or different chemical bonding, especially the noble metal-semiconductor heterostructures. Here, we develop a noble metal-seeded epitaxial growth strategy to prepare highly symmetrical noble metal-semiconductor branched heterostructures with desired spatial configurations, i.e., twenty CdS (or CdSe) nanorods epitaxially grown on twenty exposed (111) facets of Ag icosahedral nanocrystal, albeit a large lattice mismatch (more than 40%). Importantly, a high quantum yield (QY) of plasmon-induced hot-electron transferred from Ag to CdS was observed in epitaxial Ag-CdS icosapods (18.1%). This work demonstrates that epitaxial growth can be achieved in heterostructures composed of materials with large lattice mismatches. The constructed epitaxial noble metal-semiconductor interfaces could be an ideal platform for investigating the role of interfaces in various physicochemical processes.
Scalable, Green Fabrication of Single-Crystal Noble Metal Films and Nanostructures for Low-Loss Nanotechnology Applications

Abstract:The confinement of spatially extended electromagnetic waves to nanometer-scale metal structures can be harnessed for application in information processing, energy harvesting, sensing, and catalysis. Metal nanostructures enable negative refractive index, subwavelength resolution imaging, and patterning through engineered metamaterials and promise technologies that will operate in the quantum plasmonics regime. However, the controlled fabrication of high-definition single-crystal subwavelength metal nanostructures has remained a significant hurdle due to the tendency for polycrystalline metal growth using conventional physical vapor deposition methods and the challenges associated with placing solution-grown nanocrystals in desired orientations and locations on a surface to manufacture functional devices. Here, we introduce a scalable and green wet chemical approach to monocrystalline noble metal thin films and nanostructures. The method enables the fabrication of ultrasmooth, epitaxial, single-crystal films of controllable thickness that are ideal for the subtractive manufacture of nanostructures through ion beam milling and additive crystalline nanostructure via lithographic patterning for large-area, single-crystal metasurfaces and high aspect ratio nanowires. Abstract:The crystal phase, alongside the composition, morphology, architecture, facet, size, and dimensionality, has been recognized as a critical factor influencing the properties of noble metal nanomaterials in various applications. In particular, unconventional crystal phases can potentially enable fascinating properties in noble metal nanomaterials. Recent years have witnessed notable advances in the phase engineering of nanomaterials (PEN). Within the accessible strategies for phase engineering, the effect of strain cannot be ignored because strain can act not only as the driving force of phase transition but also as the origin of the diverse physicochemical properties of the unconventional crystal phase. In this review, we highlight the development of unconventional crystal-phase noble metal nanomaterials within strain engineering. We begin with a short introduction of the unconventional crystal phase and strain effect in noble metal nanomaterials. Next, the correlations of the structure and performance of strain-engineered unconventional crystal-phase noble metal nanomaterials in electrocatalysis are highlighted, as well as the phase transitions of noble metal nanomaterials induced by the strain effect. Lastly, the challenges and opportunities within this rapidly developing field (i.e., the strain engineering of unconventional crystal-phase noble metal nanocatalysts) are discussed.

Heteroepitaxial Growth of Core-Shell and Core-Multishell Nanocrystals Composed of Palladium and Gold.

Abstract:The heteroepitaxial growth of the core-shell nanocrystals composed of Pd and Au is developed. Pd nanocubes or Au nano-octahedrons are utilized as the cores. The growths of the Au and Pd shells are realized under similar conditions, where the same reducing agent and stabilizing surfactant are employed. The preparation is highly controllable, and the epitaxial growth is repeated up to three times to yield Pd@Au@Pd@Au and Au@Pd@Au@Pd core-trishell nanocrystals. The thickness of each shell is readily varied by changing the amount of the metal salts used for growth. All of the nanocrystal products have narrow size distributions and are single crystalline. The plasmon resonance properties of these nanocrystals are mainly determined by the exterior shell. The plasmon of the Pd-shell-terminated nanocrystals is suppressed, while that of the Au-shell-terminated ones is recovered and is stronger when the Au shell becomes thicker. This growth method can potentially be extended to other metals for the synthetic design of more complex core-multishell metal nanostructures with desirable optical, catalytic, and magnetic properties.

Abstract:The formation of novel and complex structures with specific morphologies from nanocrystals via a direct assembly of atoms or ions remains challenging. In recent years, researchers have focused their attention on nanocrystals of noble metals and their controlled synthesis, characterization, and potential applications. Although the synthesis of various noble metal nanocrystals with different morphologies has been reported, most studies are limited to low-index facet-terminated nanocrystals. High-index facets, denoted by a set of Miller indices {hkl} with at least one index greater than unity, possess a high density of low-coordinated atoms, steps, edges, and kinks within these structures and serve as more active catalytic sites. With the potential for enhanced catalytic performance, researchers have used the insights from shape-controlled nanocrystal synthesis to construct noble metal nanocrystals bounded with high-index facets. Since the report of Pt tetrahexahedral nanocrystals, researchers have achieved significant progress and have prepared nanocrystals with various high-index facets. Because of the general order of surface energy for noble metals, high-index facets typically vanish faster in a crystal growth stage and are difficult to preserve on the surface of the final nanocrystals. Therefore researchers have had limited opportunities to examine high-indexed noble metal nanocrystals with a controlled morphology and investigate their resultant behaviors in depth. In this Account, we thoroughly discuss the basic concepts and state-of-the-art morphology control of some noble metal nanocrystals enclosed with high-index facets. We briefly introduce high-index facets from both crystallographic and geometrical points of view, both of which serve as methods to classify these high-index facets. Then, we summarize various typical noble metal nanocrystals terminated by different types of high-index facets, including {hk0} (h > k > 0), {hhl} (h > l > 0), {hkk} (h > k > 0), and {hkl} (h > k > l > 0). In each type, we describe several distinct morphologies including convex, concave, and other irregular shapes in detail. Based on these remarks, we discuss key factors that may induce the variations of Miller indices in each class, such as organic capping ligands and metallic cationic species. In a look at applications, we review several typical high-indexed noble metal nanocrystals showing enhanced electrocatalytic or chemical catalytic activities.
Controlled Synthesis of Rare Earth Nanostructures

Abstract:Rare earth compounds form a large family of functional materials with diverse applications in electric, magnetic, optical, and catalytic fields, originating from their unique 4f electrons. Rare earth nanocrystals stir significant interest with their special properties, such as reliable optical applications and enhanced catalytic performances, allowing them to serve as building blocks to construct functional assemblies. In this feature article, we highlight recent works on controlled synthesis of rare earth nanostructures through solution-based routes such as hydrothermal/solvothermal methods and precipitation in high-boiling solvents. Various rare earth nanostructures are obtained both by rationally utilizing intrinsic crystal structures and by fine tuning of experimental conditions, such as temperature, acidity, and capping agents. The controlled phase, crystal growth process, and post-treatment are briefly discussed with typical examples. Rare earth nanocrystals exhibit a variety of shapes and thus are of great benefit for the construction of nanocrystal superlattices. Through the simulation of coarse-grained molecular dynamics, the nanocrystals superstructures are also modelled.

Abstract:We present the study of the synthesis of (001) nickel oxide (NiO) epitaxial nanocrystals grown on (001) strontium titanate (SrTiO3) single crystal substrates. Pulsed laser deposition of the bismuth nickel oxide (BiNiO3, BNO) perovskite precursor followed by post-deposition processing is carried out to form the NiO nanocrystals. A detailed analysis of the dimensions of nanocrystals reveals that the morphology attained differs from the thermodynamically expected equilibrium shape. The deviations from the equilibrium shape are found to follow a systematic trend where the in-plane basal dimensions, that is, the length and width of the nanocrystals grown differ in discretized dimensions. This discretization suggests that for a given interfacial area of nanocrystals there are multiple stable basal rectangular geometries attainable.
Phase-Selective Epitaxial Growth of Heterophase Nanostructures on Unconventional 2H-Pd Nanoparticles

Abstract:Heterostructured, including heterophase, noble-metal nanomaterials have attracted much interest due to their promising applications in diverse fields. However, great challenges still remain in the rational synthesis of well-defined noble-metal heterophase nanostructures. Herein, we report the preparation of Pd nanoparticles with an unconventional hexagonal close-packed (2H type) phase, referred to as 2H-Pd nanoparticles, via a controlled phase transformation of amorphous Pd nanoparticles. Impressively, by using the 2H-Pd nanoparticles as seeds, Au nanomaterials with different crystal phases epitaxially grow on the specific exposed facets of the 2H-Pd, i.e., face-centered cubic (fcc) Au (fcc-Au) on the (002)h facets of 2H-Pd while 2H-Au on the other exposed facets, to achieve well-defined fcc-2H-fcc heterophase core–shell nanorods. Moreover, through such unique facet-directed crystal-phase-selective epitaxial growth, a series of unconventional fcc-2H-fcc heterophase core–shell nanostructures, including , , , and , have also been prepared. Impressively, the fcc-2H-fcc heterophase nanorods show excellent performance toward the electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR) for production of carbon monoxide with Faradaic efficiencies of over 90% in an exceptionally wide applied potential window from −0.9 to −0.4 V (versus the reversible hydrogen electrode), which is among the best reported CO2RR catalysts in H-type electrochemical cells.The Supporting Information is available free of charge at <a class="ext-link" href="/doi/10.1021/jacs.0c09461?goto=supporting-info">https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/jacs.0c09461</a>.Chemicals, detailed experimental methods, characterizations, and figures and tables as described in the text (<a class="ext-link" href="/doi/suppl/10.1021/jacs.0c09461/suppl_file/ja0c09461_si_001.pdf">PDF</a>)This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Hybrid nanostructures are a class of materials that are typically composed of two or more different components, in which each component has at least one dimension on the nanoscale. The rational design and controlled synthesis of hybrid nanostructures are of great importance in enabling the fine tuning of their properties and functions. Epitaxial growth is a promising approach to the controlled synthesis of hybrid nanostructures with desired structures, crystal phases, exposed facets and/or interfaces. This Review provides a critical summary of the state of the art in the field of epitaxial growth of hybrid nanostructures. We discuss the historical development, architectures and compositions, epitaxy methods, characterization techniques and advantages of epitaxial hybrid nanostructures. Finally, we provide insight into future research directions in this area, which include the epitaxial growth of hybrid nanostructures from a wider range of materials, the study of the underlying mechanism and determining the role of epitaxial growth in influencing the properties and application performance of hybrid nanostructures.

Abstract:The fundamental understanding of the relationship between crystal structure and the dynamic processes of anisotropic growth on the nanoscale, and exploration of the key factors governing the evolution of physical properties in functional nanomaterials, have become two of the most urgent and challenging issues in the fabrication and exploitation of functional nanomaterials with designed properties and the development of nanoscale devices. Herein, we show how structural and kinetic factors govern the tendency for anisotropic growth of such materials under hydrothermal conditions, and how the crystal structure and morphology influence the optical properties of Ln3+-doped nanocrystals. The synthesis of phase-pure and single-crystalline monoclinic, hexagonal, and tetragonal one-dimensional LnPO4 nanostructures of different aspect ratios by means of kinetically controlled hydrothermal growth processes is demonstrated. It is shown that the tendency for anisotropic growth under hydrothermal conditions can be enhanced simply by modifying the chemical potentials of species in the reaction solution through the use of carefully selected chelating ligands. A systematic study of the photoluminescence of various Eu3+-doped lanthanide phosphates has revealed that the optical properties of these nanophosphors are strongly dependent on their crystal structures and morphologies.

Abstract:Controlling the structure of noble-metal-based nanomaterials (NMNs) with precision at an atomic level has received considerable attention in recent years. However, the complexity of synthetic process poses great challenges in the delicate design and fine control of NMNs. In this review, we focus on recent progress made in the chemical synthesis of NMNs at an atomic level, which include surface engineering of NMNs, atomic layer coating of NMNs, metal doping or substitution, and intermetallic compounds. The catalytic properties of well-controlled NMNs are discussed. Finally, the major challenges and opportunities pertaining to the controllable synthesis of NMNs are presented. We believe this brief review provides up-to-date information on the fine tuning of NMNs structures, and offers some new perspectives of this rapidly developing field. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd.
