Abstract:Methane emissions from the global oil and gas value chain are a major contributor to climate change, and their mitigation could avoid 0.1 °C of warming by 2050. Here, we synthesize nearly a decade of research encompassing thousands of multiscale methane measurements along the oil and gas value chain (production to end use) to better constrain estimates of methane emissions from Canada's energy sector and to identify research gaps contributing to uncertainty in current estimates. We find that total value chain methane emissions are 2,600 (2,100-3,700) kt, which broadly agrees with Canada's latest official inventory that now includes atmospheric measurement data in some of their oil and gas methane estimates. Accurate understanding of emission magnitudes is critical because Canada committed to a 75% reduction of oil and gas methane emissions by 2030. We also identify and discuss information gaps in both emissions and activity data, namely, from the midstream, downstream, and end-use sectors. While they make up a smaller portion of the total inventory, accurate quantification of these emissions is still important and could point to more cost-effective mitigation solutions. This work emphasizes the need for frequent, comprehensive measurements to better constrain the climate impacts of the oil and gas sector and to validate reductions and commitments pledged by industry and governments.
Direct measurements of methane emissions from key facilities in Alberta's oil and gas supply chain

Abstract:The Canadian government aims to achieve a 40-45 % reduction of oil and gas (O&G) methane (CH4) emissions by 2025, and 75 % by 2030, although recent studies consistently show that Canada's federal inventory underestimates emissions by a factor of 1.4 to 2.0. We conducted aerial mass balance measurements at sixteen upstream O&G facilities in Alberta between September 29 and November 6, 2021, and our measurements revealed that emissions were, on average, 1.7 (standard deviation (SD): 0.6) times higher than the reported emissions for the same year. On a subsequent campaign from August 12 to September 27, 2022, we focused on understudied O&G sectors covering 24 midstream and end-use facilities. These sites were found to be emitting, on average, 3.4 (SD: 1.1) times more CH4 than reported. By extrapolating our measurements to Alberta, we found that underground gas storage contributed to 1.6 % of provincial O&G emissions, followed by natural gas power stations/refineries less than 1.0 %. The widespread underreporting of CH4 emissions highlights the necessity for more empirical measurements of midstream and end-use facilities.

Abstract:Methane, a potent greenhouse gas, is a significant contributor to global warming, with future increases in its abundance potentially leading to an increase of more than 1◦C by 2050 beyond other greenhouse gases if left unaddressed. To remain within the crucial target of limiting global warming to 1.5◦C, it is imperative to evaluate the potential of methane removal techniques. This study presents a scoping analysis of different catalytic technologies (thermal, photochemical and electrochemical) and materials to evaluate potential limitations and energy requirements. An analysis of mass transport and reaction rates is conducted for atmospheric methane conversion system configurations. For the vast majority of catalytic technologies, the reaction rates limit the conversion which motivates future efforts for catalyst development. An analysis of energy requirements for atmospheric methane conversion shows minimum energy configurations for various catalytic technologies within classic tube or parallel plate architectures that have analogs to ventilation and industrial fins. Methane concentrations ranging from 2 ppm (ambient) to 1000 ppm (sources, such as wetlands, fossil-fuel extraction sites, landfills etc.) are examined. The study finds that electrocatalysis offers the most energy efficient approach (∼0.2 GJ/tonne CO2e) for new installations in turbulent ducts, with a total energy intensity 100 GJ/tonne), while combining photovoltaics with electrochemical catalysts (∼1 GJ/tonne CO2e) have comparable energy intensity to photocatalytic methane removal catalysts.

Satellite Quantification of Methane Emissions and Oil–gas Methane Intensities from Individual Countries in the Middle East and North Africa: Implications for Climate Action

Abstract:Abstract. We use 2019 TROPOMI satellite observations of atmospheric methane in an analytical inversion to quantify methane emissions from the Middle East and North Africa at up to ∼25 km × 25 km resolution, using spatially allocated national United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) reports as prior estimates for the fuel sector. Our resulting best estimate of anthropogenic emissions for the region is 35 % higher than the prior bottom-up inventories (+103 % for gas, +53 % for waste, +49 % for livestock, −14 % for oil) with large variability across countries. Oil and gas account for 38 % of total anthropogenic emissions in the region. TROPOMI observations can effectively optimize and separate national emissions by sector for most of the 23 countries in the region, with 6 countries accounting for most of total anthropogenic emissions including Iran (5.3 (5.0–5.5) Tg a−1; best estimate and uncertainty range), Turkmenistan (4.4 (2.8–5.1) Tg a−1), Saudi Arabia (4.3 (2.4–6.0) Tg a−1), Algeria (3.5 (2.4–4.4) Tg a−1), Egypt (3.4 (2.5–4.0) Tg a−1), and Turkey (3.0 (2.0–4.1) Tg a−1). Most oil–gas emissions are from the production (upstream) subsector, but Iran, Turkmenistan, and Saudi Arabia have large gas emissions from transmission and distribution subsectors. We identify a high number of annual oil–gas emission hotspots in Turkmenistan, Algeria, and Oman and offshore in the Persian Gulf. We show that oil–gas methane emissions for individual countries are not related to production, invalidating a basic premise in the construction of activity-based bottom-up inventories. Instead, local infrastructure and management practices appear to be key drivers of oil–gas emissions, emphasizing the need for including top-down information from atmospheric observations in the construction of oil–gas emission inventories. We examined the methane intensity, defined as the upstream oil–gas emission per unit of methane gas produced, as a measure of the potential for decreasing emissions from the oil–gas sector and using as reference the 0.2 % target set by the industry. We find that the methane intensity in most countries is considerably higher than this target, reflecting leaky infrastructure combined with deliberate venting or incomplete flaring of gas. However, we also find that Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar meet the industry target and thus show that the target is achievable through the capture of associated gas, modern infrastructure, and the concentration of operations. Decreasing methane intensities across the Middle East and North Africa to 0.2 % would achieve a 90 % decrease in oil–gas upstream emissions and a 26 % decrease in total anthropogenic methane emissions in the region, making a significant contribution toward the Global Methane Pledge.

Abstract:Abstract Mitigation actions and regulations to meet critical 2030 methane reduction targets under the Global Methane Pledge are hampered by uncertainty in true levels of emissions and source breakdowns. Here we present a measurement-based, source-resolved, hybrid top-down/bottom-up methane inventory for conventional upstream oil and gas operations in Canada’s largest oil and gas-producing province, Alberta. The derived 2021 inventory of 1337 kt/y is approximately 1.5× the official federal inventory and matches independent top-down aerial mass-balance and satellite estimates within uncertainties. Major sources are starkly different from official estimates, with venting (e.g., uncontrolled tanks, pneumatics, unlit flares) comprising almost two-thirds of emissions implying important mitigation opportunities. Derived methane intensities, while similar to U.S. basins, are approximately 4× those in neighbouring British Columbia and further reveal order-of-magnitude differences among individual anonymized companies at directly comparable facility types. This highlights the importance of independent monitoring, reporting, and verification to ensure collective success in reducing emissions.
Effects of systemic lidocaine versus magnesium administration on postoperative functional recovery and chronic pain in patients undergoing breast cancer surgery: A prospective, randomized, double-blind, comparative clinical trial

Abstract:Introduction We aimed to compare the effects of intraoperative lidocaine and magnesium on postoperative functional recovery and chronic pain after mastectomy due to breast cancer. Systemic lidocaine and magnesium reduce pain hypersensitivity to surgical stimuli; however, their effects after mastectomy have not been evaluated clearly. Methods In this prospective, double-blind, clinical trial, 126 female patients undergoing mastectomy were randomly assigned to lidocaine (L), magnesium (M), and control (C) groups. Lidocaine and magnesium were administered at 2 mg/kg and 20 mg/kg for 15 minutes immediately after induction, followed by infusions of 2 mg/kg/h and 20 mg/kg/h, respectively. The control group received the same volume of saline. Patient characteristics, perioperative parameters, and postoperative recovery profiles, including the Quality of Recovery 40 (QoR-40) survey, pain scales, length of hospital stay, and the short-form McGill pain questionnaire (SF-MPQ) at postoperative 1 month and 3 months were evaluated. Results The global QoR-40 scores on postoperative day 1 were significantly higher in group L than in group C (P = 0.003). Moreover, in sub-scores of the QoR-40 dimensions, emotional state and pain scores were significantly higher in group L than those in groups M and C (P = 0.027 and 0.023, respectively). At postoperative 3 months, SF-MPQ and SF-MPQ-sensitive scores were significantly lower in group L than in group C (P = 0.046 and 0.036, respectively). Conclusions Intraoperative infusion of lidocaine improved the quality of recovery and attenuated the intensity of chronic pain in patients undergoing breast cancer surgery.
Is hydrogen production through natural gas pyrolysis compatible with ambitious climate targets in the United States? A location-specific, time-resolved analysis

Abstract:Pyrolysis of natural gas to produce H2 and solid carbon through methane cracking can be characterized as a high-CH4, low-CO2 process. It results in low CO2 emissions because no direct CO2 is generated at the point of H2 generation if solid carbon is not combusted further. However, it results in high CH4 emissions because of its higher natural gas consumption compared to the direct use of natural gas and, thus, higher CH4 losses along the natural gas supply chain. Here, I analyzed whether this process can provide climate benefit in comparison to the direct, unabated utilization of natural gas and also in comparison with H2 produced from water electrolysis with grid electricity. To this end, Monte Carlo simulations of time-resolved and US state-specific emission profiles and their impact on mid-century global warming under different CH4 mitigation scenarios were conducted. It was found that the climate benefit of natural gas pyrolysis is highly dependent on plant location and the speed at which CH4 emissions can be abated. New York, Pennsylvania, and Ohio emerged as the most promising locations. This is because of their projected long reliance on natural gas for power generation, which renders electrolysis using grid electricity less attractive, as well as the relatively low estimate of current CH4 emissions from the natural gas supply chain. However, without fast action on CH4 emission mitigation, the climate benefit of natural gas pyrolysis is small or non-existent, irrespective of the plant location. Overall, the uncertainty in the relative climate benefit of natural gas pyrolysis was found to be large; however, this study developed an easy-to-adapt MS Excel/VBA tool that can be updated as soon as more accurate data on CH4 emissions becomes available. Policymakers, businesspeople, and scholars can use this tool to estimate the climate impact within their own scenarios and locations.

Abstract:Summary Methane management is a key greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction focus within the oil and gas industry. While there are a variety of techniques for methane detection and measurement, aircraft-mounted sensors have become popular for both academic studies and operators in onshore regions in North America due to their ability to screen many sites in a relatively short amount of time. Many traditional leak detection and repair (LDAR) techniques, like optical gas imaging (OGI), and emerging approaches, such as aircraft-based or satellite-based screenings, are periodic, which means that they can provide information about the presence of emissions and approximate rates during the observation period. Scaling periodic observations to annual emission estimates needed for regulatory and corporate reporting requires information on emission duration, which is not generally provided by the same screening techniques. In the literature to date, there have been several statistical approaches proposed for the annualization of basin-level methane observations, but these techniques may struggle to downscale to individual operators, across which methane emission intensities are expected to vary. In this paper, we propose a novel, conceptual framework for using other sources of data, such as records from operator inspections and parametric monitoring, to help define the duration of detected methane emissions. Such information may prove to be a useful input to measurement-informed methane emission protocols that are under development by multistakeholder groups, like GTI Energy Veritas and federal agencies in the United States.

Abstract:OBJECT Patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI) with low presenting Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) scores have very high morbidity and mortality rates. Neurosurgeons may be faced with difficult decisions in managing the most severely injured (GCS scores of 3 or 4) patients. The situation may be considered hopeless, with little chance of a functional recovery. Long-term data are limited regarding the clinical outcome of children with severe head injury. The authors evaluate predictor variables and the clinical outcomes at discharge, 1 year, and long term (median 10.5 years) in a cohort of children with TBI presenting with postresuscitation GCS scores of 3 and 4. METHODS A review of a prospectively collected trauma database was performed. Patients treated at Riley Hospital for Children (Indianapolis, Indiana) from 1988 to 2004 were reviewed. All children with initial GCS (modified for pediatric patients) scores of 3 or 4 were identified. Patients with a GCS score of 3 were compared with those with a GCS score of 4. The outcomes of all patients at the time of death or discharge and at 1-year and long-term follow-up were measured with a modified Glasgow Outcome Scale (GOS) that included a "normal" outcome. Long-term outcomes were evaluated by contacting surviving patients. Statistical "classification trees" were formed for survival and outcome, based on predictor variables. RESULTS Sixty-seven patients with a GCS score of 3 or 4 were identified in a database of 1636 patients (4.1%). Three of the presenting factors differed between the GCS 3 patients (n = 44) and the GCS 4 patients (n = 23): presence of hypoxia, single seizure, and open basilar cisterns on CT scan. The clinical outcomes were statistically similar between the 2 groups. In total, 48 (71.6%) of 67 patients died, remained vegetative, or were severely disabled by 1 year. Eight patients (11.9%) were normal at 1 year. Ten of the 22 patients with long-term follow-up were either normal or had a GOS score of 5. Multiple clinical, historical, and radiological factors were analyzed for correlation with survival and clinical outcome. Classification trees were formed to stratify predictive factors. The pupillary response was the factor most predictive of both survival and outcome. Other factors that either positively or negatively correlated with survival included hypothermia, mechanism of injury (abuse), hypotension, major concurrent symptoms, and midline shift on CT scan. Other factors that either positively or negatively predicted long-term outcome included hypothermia, mechanism of injury, and the assessment of the fontanelle. CONCLUSIONS In this cohort of 67 TBI patients with a presenting GCS score of 3 or 4, 56.6% died within 1 year. However, approximately 15% of patients had a good outcome at 10 or more years. Factors that correlated with survival and outcome included the pupillary response, hypothermia, and mechanism. The authors discuss factors that may help surgeons make critical decisions regarding their most serious pediatric trauma patients.
Satellite‐Based Surveys Reveal Substantial Methane Point‐Source Emissions in Major Oil & Gas Basins of North America During 2022–2023

Abstract:Abstract Utilizing imaging spectroscopy technology to identify methane super‐emitters plays a vital role in mitigating methane emissions in the Oil & Gas (O&G) sector. While earlier research has uncovered significant point‐source methane emissions from O&G production in the US and Canada, which are key regions with large methane emissions, a comprehensive post‐COVID‐19 survey has been notably absent. Here, we perform a detailed survey of methane super‐emitters across multiple basins of North America (Marcellus Shale, Haynesville/Bossier Shale, Permian Basin and Montney Shale) using the new Chinese Gaofen5‐01A/02 (GF5‐01A/02) satellite measurements during 2022–2023. We detect 139 individual methane plumes emanating from 122 point sources, with flux rates ranging from 519 to 16,071 kg hr −1 . These emissions exhibit a highly skewed and heavy‐tailed distribution, constituting approximately 23% of the flux inversion with TROPOMI in the sample region, with a range of 13%–40%. Moreover, we observe a 66.7% reduction in methane emissions in Permian Basin during COVID‐19, followed by fluctuations until spring 2023. By summer 2023, methane emissions rebound to twice their previous magnitude (1.68 ± 0.58 Tg a −1 ). Using these point‐source surveys, we further quantify a regional methane emission of 2.69 ± 0.86 Tg a −1 in Permian Basin. This estimation closely aligns with top‐down inversions (2.22 ± 0.40 Tg a −1 ) from TROPOMI. The upscale estimation underscores the effectiveness of high‐resolution remote sensing measurements in improving bottom‐up emissions inventories and refining regional methane emission assessments. Our results highlight the potential climate benefits derived from regular monitoring and specific remediation efforts focused on relatively few strong point‐source emissions.

Abstract:Residential natural gas meter set assemblies (MSAs) emit methane (CH 4 ), but reported emissions factors vary. To test existing emissions factors, we quantified CH 4 emissions from 37 residential MSAs in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. A notable difference with previous studies is the targeted measurement of regulator vents in this study, which were measured with a static chamber, while fugitives were measured with a modified hi-flow sampler. Emissions were dominated by pressure regulator vents (emissions factor = 1.18 g CH 4 /h/MSA), but 7 fugitives were found (emissions factor = 0.018 g CH 4 /h/MSA). Six regulator vents were emitting at notably higher rates (≥ 1.79 g CH 4 /h/MSA). The total empirical emissions factor was 1.20 g CH 4 /h/MSA (95 % CI, 1.03 to 1.37 g/h/MSA). This is ∼7 times higher than the emissions factor for residential MSAs used in the U.S. EPA's Greenhouse Gas Inventory, which may not include emissions from regulator vents. Upscaling to annual CH 4 emissions in Calgary indicates 3234.6 t CH 4 /yr (95 % CI, 2776.4 t to 3692.9 t CH 4 /yr) could be emitted from MSAs. This is equivalent to 4.1 % (95 % CI, 3.5 % to 4.7 %) of total city-level CH 4 emissions as estimated with satellite data. Results suggest residential MSA emissions may be under-estimated and further study isolating root causes of regulator vent emissions is required to guide mitigation and improve emissions modeling.

Practitioners typically assess GM by above-background methane gas concentrations in-soil or at-grade; however, factors influencing the potential variation in these measurements are not well represented in industry-recommended best practices. Inexpensive chemoresistive sensors were used to record a 1-minute frequency methane gas concentration time series over 19 days. Time series were recorded at three soil depths (0, 5, and 30 cm) at two locations <30 mcm radially from a petroleum well with known GM, in addition to two “control” locations. Observed concentration variations ranged over several orders of magnitude at all depths, with generally lower concentrations and more variation observed at shallower depths. Varying concentrations were correlated to meteorological factors, primarily including wind speed and shallow groundwater table elevation. The gas concentration patterns were affected by a 3.5-mm rainfall event, suggesting soil moisture changes affected preferential GM pathways. Results indicate potential variability in repeated snapshot GM test results. Although, currently recommended GM detection methods would have effectively identified the presence/absence of GM, they would not have quantified the order of magnitude changes in concentration. GM detection success at this site was increased with measurement at more than one location spatially within 30 cm of the well casing, lower concentration detection limits, and greater measurement depth. These findings indicate that meteorological factors should be considered when conducting GM surveys (particularly for improving at-grade test reliability). The low-cost approach for long-term concentration measurement facilitates insight into variable gas concentrations and may be advantageous in comparison to snapshot measurements in some circumstances.

Abstract:The increasing methane emissions from the upstream oil and gas sector deviates from the goals of the Paris Agreement on sustainable development and climate control. This paper reviews recent direct measurement results and technological advances in the upstream oil and gas sector, based on more than 100 sources published between 2018 and 2022. No consensus was found on the correlation between methane emissions and well data items such as production volume and well age. Aircraft surveys were the most frequently used technology during the study period. Developed countries lead in direct measurement, with only 12.5% of studies conducted in developing countries. The sensing method and the performance of sensor carriers lead to different characterisations of direct measurement techniques. Growing upstream methane emissions accelerate global warming and pose risks to groundwater. Mitigating super-emitters and reported venting and flares could reduce total methane emissions by 20% and 25%, respectively. China, the world's largest methane emitter, emitted approximately 2135 kt methane from its upstream oil and gas sector, mainly through venting (80%). Direct methane measurements and the strength of government management could assist China in prioritising carbon emission reduction and filling the legislative gap.

Abstract:An improved divergence method has been developed to estimate annual methane (CH4) emissions from TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) observations. It has been applied to the period of 2018 to 2021 over the Middle East, where the orography is complicated, and the mean mixing ratio of methane (XCH4) might be affected by albedos or aerosols over some locations. To adapt to extreme changes of terrain over mountains or coasts, winds are used with their divergent part removed. A temporal filter is introduced to identify highly variable emissions and to further exclude fake sources caused by retrieval artifacts. We compare our results to widely used bottom-up anthropogenic emission inventories: Emissions Database for Global Atmospheric Research (EDGAR), Community Emissions Data System (CEDS), and Global Fuel Exploitation Inventory (GFEI) over several regions representing various types of sources. The NOx emissions are from EDGAR and Daily Emissions Constrained by Satellite Observations (DECSO), and the industrial heat sources identified by Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) are further used to better understand our resulting methane emissions. Our results indicate possibly large underestimations of methane emissions in metropolises like Tehran (up to 50 %) and Isfahan (up to 70 %) in Iran. The derived annual methane emissions from oil/gas production near the Caspian Sea in Turkmenistan are comparable to GFEI but more than 2 times higher than EDGAR and CEDS in 2019. Large discrepancies in the distribution of methane sources in Riyadh and its surrounding areas are found between EDGAR, CEDS, GFEI, and our emissions. The methane emission from oil/gas production to the east of Riyadh seems to be largely overestimated by EDGAR and CEDS, while our estimates as well as GFEI and DECSO NOx indicate much lower emissions from industrial activities. On the other hand, regions like Iran, Iraq, and Oman are dominated by sources from oil and gas exploitation that probably include more irregular releases of methane, with the result that our estimates, which include only invariable sources, are lower than the bottom-up emission inventories.

Abstract:Methane emissions from the U.S. oil and natural gas supply chain were estimated by using ground-based, facility-scale measurements and validated with aircraft observations in areas accounting for ~30% of U.S. gas production. When scaled up nationally, our facility-based estimate of 2015 supply chain emissions is 13 ± 2 teragrams per year, equivalent to 2.3% of gross U.S. gas production. This value is ~60% higher than the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency inventory estimate, likely because existing inventory methods miss emissions released during abnormal operating conditions. Methane emissions of this magnitude, per unit of natural gas consumed, produce radiative forcing over a 20-year time horizon comparable to the CO<sub>2</sub> from natural gas combustion. Substantial emission reductions are feasible through rapid detection of the root causes of high emissions and deployment of less failure-prone systems.

Abstract:Bitumen extraction for the production of synthetic crude oil in Canada's Athabasca Oil Sands industry has recently come under spotlight for being a significant source of greenhouse gas emission. A major cause of concern is methane, a greenhouse gas produced by the anaerobic biodegradation of hydrocarbons in oil sands residues, or tailings, stored in settle basins commonly known as oil sands tailing ponds. In order to determine the methane emitting potential of these tailing ponds and have future methane projections, we use real-time weather data, mechanistic models developed from laboratory controlled experiments, and industrial reports to train a physics constrained machine learning model. Our trained model can successfully identify the directions of active ponds and estimate their emission levels, which are generally hard to obtain due to data sampling restrictions. We found that each active oil sands tailing pond could emit between 950 to 1500 tonnes of methane per year, whose environmental impact is equivalent to carbon dioxide emissions from at least 6000 gasoline powered vehicles. Although abandoned ponds are often presumed to have insignificant emissions, our findings indicate that these ponds could become active over time and potentially emit up to 1000 tonnes of methane each year. Taking an average over all datasets that was used in model training, we estimate that emissions around major oil sands regions would need to be reduced by approximately 12% over a year, to reduce the average methane concentrations to 2005 levels.

Abstract:Methane, a greenhouse gas, is the second largest contributor to global warming after carbon dioxide and is 25 times more effective at trapping heat in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide. In 2015, fugitive emissions of methane from Australian underground coal mines were reported at 25 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent. Ventilation air methane (VAM) is present in low concentrations (below 1.0 vol %), and its abatement and use as an energy source are a challenge for the coal mining industry. This paper examines the recovery of heat from a fluidized-bed VAM abatement unit and utilization in power generation via the Brayton cycle. The objective of the study was to determine the minimum methane concentration required to maintain autothermal operations and produce sufficient power to operate a fluidized-bed plant without supplementary power or fuel. Four configurations were studied and simulated using Aspen Plus software. For direct heat recovery, the minimum methane concentration increased with an increase in both the reactor outlet temperature and compressor outlet pressure. The minimum methane concentration for the indirect heat recovery configurations decreased when both the reactor outlet temperature and compressor outlet pressure increased. For all configurations, the minimum methane concentration was limited by the maximum reactor inlet temperature of 600 °C (to prevent autoignition of methane upstream of the reactor).

Atmospheric Measurement Techniques

Abstract:Methane emissions from natural gas systems are increasingly scrutinized, and accurate reporting requires quantification of site- and source-level measurement. We evaluate the performance of 10 available state-of-the-art CH 4 emission quantification approaches against a blind controlled-release experiment at an inerted natural gas compressor station in 2021. The experiment consisted of 17 blind 2 h releases at a single exhaust point or multiple simultaneous ones. The controlled releases covered a range of methane flow rates from 0.01 to 50 kg h −1 . Measurement platforms included aircraft, drones, trucks, vans, ground-based stations, and handheld systems. Herewith, we compare their respective strengths, weaknesses, and potential complementarity depending on the emission rates and atmospheric conditions. Most systems were able to quantify the releases within an order of magnitude. The level of errors from the different systems was not significantly influenced by release rates larger than 0.1 kg h −1 , with much poorer results for the 0.01 kg h −1 release. It was found that handheld optical gas imaging (OGI) cameras underestimated the emissions. In contrast, the "site-level" systems, relying on atmospheric dispersion, tended to overestimate the emission rates. We assess the dependence of emission quantification performance on key parameters such as wind speed, deployment constraints, and measurement duration. At the low wind speeds encountered (below 2 m s −1 ), the experiments did not reveal a significant dependence on wind speed. The ability to quantify individual sources degraded during multiple-source releases. Compliance with the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership's (OGMP 2.0) highest level of reporting may require a combination of the specific advantages of each measurement technique and will depend on reconciliation approaches. Self-reported uncertainties were either not available or were based on the standard deviation in a series of independent realizations or fixed values from expert judgment or theoretical considerations. For most systems, the overall relative errors estimated in this study are higher than self-reported uncertainties.
