Abstract:Cosmetic surgery stands, for many theorists and social critics, as the ultimate symbol of invasion of the human body for the sake of physical beauty. Interpreted as somehow qualitatively different from other efforts at altering the body, plastic surgery is considered to be so extreme, so dangerous, that it leaves no space for interpretation as anything but subjugation. While such criticisms are compelling, they tend to operate at either the grand level of cultural discourse or the highly grounded level of physiological effect. As a result, they leave out almost altogether the experience of the women who themselves have plastic surgery. This article draws from qualitative interviews with 20 female clients of a Long Island, NY plastic surgeon to explore cosmetic surgery as an occasion for autobiographical accounting and a particular kind of account of the self. Interview data suggest that plastic surgery allows women who undergo these procedures to successfully reposition their bodies as “normal” bodies. At the same time, it also requires them to create accounts that reattach the self to the surgically-“corrected”—but potentially “inauthentic”—body by invoking both essentialist notions of the self and corresponding notions of the body as accidental, inessential, or degenerated from a younger body that better represented who they truly are.

Happy and Unhappy Patients: A Quantitative Analysis of Online Plastic Surgeon Reviews for Breast Augmentation

Abstract:Background: Online reviews have become modern versions of the word-of-mouth recommendation, and prospective patients are increasingly consulting them before making decisions about their surgical care. The authors’ objectives were to (1) identify trends in the use of online reviews, and (2) important reasons for patient satisfaction and dissatisfaction with aesthetic surgery. The authors selected breast augmentation as the primary procedure of interest. Methods: Reviews of the top 10 to 20 most reviewed plastic surgeons in each of six large metropolitan areas were obtained from Google, Yelp, and RealSelf. Reviews were assessed for predefined dimensions of satisfaction and dissatisfaction. Results: A total of 1077 breast augmentation reviews were obtained. Ratings were distributed bimodally, with peaks at five stars and one star. The majority of reviews were positive (87.5 percent). Relative popularity of Google versus Yelp varied across geographic regions, and average rating varied by platform. Between 2011 and 2016, the number of online reviews for breast augmentation grew at an average rate of 42.6 percent per year. Aesthetic outcome was the most commonly cited dimension (69.8 percent of reviews), whereas cost was mentioned in only 7.8 percent of reviews. A substantial minority of negative Yelp (37 percent) and Google (9.4 percent) reviews were written by patients who did not actually undergo surgery. Free-text analysis of heterogeneous reviews (containing positive and negative attributes) classified dimensions as critical, redeemable, or protective. Conclusion: As the influence of online review platforms continues to grow, understanding drivers of positive and negative reviews may help surgeons improve patient satisfaction.

Abstract:Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease is the most common disease affecting the upper gastrointestinal tract and affects all age groups, from infants to the aged. Approximately 8 % of adults meet the diagnostic criteria for GORD. In many cases the symptoms act as a constraint on everyday living and quality of life (1), and the indirect costs to society in terms of reduced productivity may be substantial (2). The disease is chronic in most cases, but often with varying need for treatment over time. The most effective medical treatment for acid reflux is proton pump inhibitors (PPI), which inhibit the acid secretion of the stomach more strongly and with a longer duration of action than other available drugs (3). The consumption of these medicines in Norway is lower than elsewhere in Europe, but has increased by up to 10 % annually in the period 2003 – 2008 (4). Both overuse and under-use are undesirable, and it is important that the drugs be used optimally. This article is intended to provide practice advice on the use of proton pump inhibitors for acid reflux disease and is based on searches in PubMed, the authors’ own clinical experience and research, and Norwegian reimbursement rules for prescription drugs.

Abstract:Background: Breast image plays an important role in a woman's identity. Breast aesthetics has strong social, emotional, and cultural connotations. Objectives: We aimed to understand one's breast satisfaction, what is seen as ideal, and the gap between these two facets. We also studied the influence of several factors on these conceptions, including clinical and demographic characteristics, self-esteem, social media use, and pornography. We also studied the motivational factors driving the recourse to surgery. Methods: An online questionnaire of 64 questions divided into 5 sections was shared on social media to all women over the age of 18. Three versions were available: French, Dutch, and English. The questionnaire was accessible for 45 days (from 12/18/2021 to 01/31/2022). Results: A total of 382 complete responses were analyzed. The average age was 30.6 years; the most frequent breast size was a B cup (29.06%), while the size considered ideal was a C cup (49.48%). Social media and pornography seem to influence the conception of ideal breast; the subgroup that uses them tends to choose a larger breast size as ideal. Smoking and the education level also seem to influence this conception. Furthermore, 26.96% of women would benefit from breast surgery if they did not have to consider the financial aspect. Conclusions: The ideal breast concept is highly dependent on regional, cultural, and religious factors. It is interesting to note the influence that other less studied factors, such as pornography, smoking habits, and social media, may have. The anxious production of beauty: Unruly bodies, surgical anxiety and invisible care

Abstract:This study is based on ethnographic fieldwork at a plastic surgery clinic in Seoul, South Korea. Examining the three phases of plastic--consultation, operation and recovery--I show how surgeons work to shape not only patients' bodies but also expectations and satisfaction. Surgeons do so in part to assuage their own anxieties, which arise from the possibility of misaligned beauty standards and unforeseen anatomies, as well as the possible dissatisfaction of the patient. I offer the concept of 'surgical anxiety', which occurs in relation to inherently unruly patient bodies in which worries, fear, frustration, self-pity, cynicism, anger and even loneliness are symptomatic. The unpredictability and uncontrollability of patients' bodies, which generates anxiety for both patients and surgeons, work to constrain the power of plastic surgery and making it inherently vulnerable. This study also pays attention to the invisible work of taking care of surgical anxiety, as practised by female staff members, and surgeons' dependence on these workers. My focus on anxiety is a kind of remedy for the predominant concern with 'ambivalence' in constructivist science and technology studies; rather than continue to highlight the power differentials between experts/practitioners and lay people/patients, this study illuminates surgical anxiety as their shared vulnerability. Thus, this study proposes a new politics of care in technoscience and medicine, which begins with anxiety.

Abstract:Consumer interest in cosmetic surgery has grown tremendously in recent years. However, despite the long‐lasting implications of cosmetic surgery decisions on consumer well‐being, existing insights on these decisions remain limited and scattered across various fields. Through an interdisciplinary bibliometric review, we identify that previous research has primarily focused on five aspects shaping consumers' decisions in cosmetic surgery: (1) differing perspectives, (2) social drivers, (3) individual drivers, (4) online media content, and (5) influences relevant to labiaplasty. These investigations stem from the fields of psychology, sociology, communication, and healthcare and aim to understand especially consumer intentions to undergo surgery at the pre‐consumption stage. In this research, we delineate how marketing researchers can advance insights along the entire consumer surgery journey (i.e., pre‐consumption, consumption, and post‐consumption stage) through a better understanding of (i) the phenomenon and its different treatments, (ii) the role of identity, (iii) stakeholder interactions, and (iv) how social media and technology shape cosmetic surgery decisions. Finally, we highlight how studying these topics can contribute to marketing theory through novel insights on the self and identity, the body's meaning in consumption, and self‐enhancement practices.

Abstract:Cultural sociology undertheorizes the emotional dimension of culture. In this study, I use the case of invasive cosmetic surgery to develop conceptual tools for filling this gap. Cosmetic surgery (i) brings a prominent and complex change in meanings of the self and the social image that goes far beyond mere appearance; and (ii) it involves intensive emotions of suffering, anxiety, and excitement. These two features reveal key similarities that cosmetic surgery shares with Victor Turner's model of the ritual of passage. I apply it to the case at hand and show that these emotions, which are usually either neglected or seen as mere 'side effects' of surgery, strongly affect meaning‐making related to cosmetic operations, meanings of the self, and broader aesthetic conventions. To zoom into these hidden processes, I introduce a sketch of a Durkheimian theory of cathexis that enables us to recognize cultural, cognitive, and emotional mechanisms of cosmetic surgery's 'extraphysical effects.' I illustrate my approach using open data from Internet forums of cosmetic surgery consumers and other evidence from existing literature.

Abstract:We live in a society where beauty and sensations are important. Advances in medical technologies have brought on waves of new notions of beauty where commercial interests both in the media and the health industry spurred by fashion, advertising and celebrity promotion have tended to popularise body modifications and enhancements. In recent times, through offerings on cable television channels and glossy consumer magazines, medical procedures hitherto only in the precincts of medical schools, gyneacological clinics and medical journals have now pervaded the population. More seriously, on the Internet particularly, medical experts now offer services and graphic details of labiaplasty, clitoral hood reduction or enhancement, vaginal rejuvenation, etc. Here, we examine the public communication of the phenomenon of aesthetic genital surgery and interrogate thus; is it decent, honest, balanced and ethical? Relying on textual analysis, personal observation and literature review for data gathering, we observe that besides tending to commercialise and medicalise the female genitalia, a coalescence of medical, advertising and fashion interests as played out in the media sensationalises the benign science of plastic surgery and robs it of its truthfulness, genuineness, and purposefulness. The conclusion is that in Africa, where the effect of the development crises is telling, the hype surrounding cosmetic or aesthetic genital surgery is a damaging distraction particularly when the continent is waging a battle against female genital mutilation. The recommendations are that media and medical regulatory bodies should impress it upon media and medical industry operators that glaring commercial promotions of cosmetic genital surgery in the public media be checked, and that such communication should bear equal weight of facts related to risks, short comings, complications, and threats; in physical, social, and psychological terms.

Abstract:IntroductionPatients interested in aesthetic plastic surgery procedures increasingly seek advice on social media and rely on easily accessible online information. The investigatory goal was to determine the impact of this phenomenon on the everyday aesthetic plastic surgery practice.Methods and PatientsFive hundred consecutive patients completed a questionnaire prior to their consultation with a plastic surgeon at our clinic. A questionnaire was also completed by 128 plastic surgeons practising in 19 different countries. A literature review was performed.ResultsAlmost all patients (95 %) used the internet to collect information prior to consultation, for 68 % of them it being their first search method. Social media were used by 46 % of patients and 40 % of these were strongly influenced when choosing a specific doctor. The majority of plastic surgeons (85 %) thought the information found on social media could lead to unrealistic expectations. However, 45 % of plastic surgeons believed that their consultations became easier after the advent of social media, 29 % found them more difficult. A literature review showed a high percentage of poor quality internet websites regarding plastic surgery and an increase in use of social media among plastic surgeons.ConclusionThe internet and social media play an important and growing role in plastic surgery. This results in more informed patients but may create unrealistic expectations. Even if the internet provides ample information, it cannot replace the face-to-face consultation, which always should remain a detailed process, covering both risks and limitations of alternative procedures. The Importance of Media on Decision to Undergo Cosmetic Surgery Operation

Abstract:Background: How media disseminates ideal beauty, and its effect on the decision-making process of cosmetic procedures are among the most discussed topics in the literature. This study aimed to investigate the effects of media on patients' decisions to undergo cosmetic surgery. Materials and methods: Between March and September 2021, 82 patients participated in this study and informed consent was obtained from all patients. A questionnaire containing three different parts was developed by a consultant plastic surgeon and a public relations and marketing specialist, according to the literature. All statistical analyses were performed using SPSS version 22.0. Results: The majority of patients underwent rhinoplasty (31.7%), breast reduction (25.6%), and breast augmentation (12.2%). Some of the patients underwent two different operations (6%). The correlation analysis results showed that, there was a medium, positive correlation between wanting to be attractive and thinking that media is an important tool in the decision to undergo cosmetic surgery (r=.307, p<.01). Want to look like people on the media and compare themselves with those showing a positive and strong correlation (r=.640, p<.01). The photographs on the magazines affected the patients aged between 40-49 and 50-59 more (χ2(4) = 11,378, p<.05); however, the published news on the Internet affected the younger sample (30-39 and 21-29) more than the other age groups (χ2(4)= 11,808, p<.05). The participants aged 30-39 and 21-29 tend to compare themselves with people on the Internet. Conclusion: The study concludes that media is not only important for disseminating beauty ideals but is also an important source during decision making. However, further studies with more participants and objective scales are needed to verify our results. Factors Associated with Likelihood to Undergo Cosmetic Surgical Procedures Among Young Adults in the United States: A Narrative Review

Abstract:Introduction/goals: Over the past decade, cosmetic surgical procedures have become increasingly popular. This trend has been driven by procedural innovations as well as access to Internet and social media. Consequently, patients have been seeking cosmetic surgical procedures at younger ages. In this narrative review, studies assessing attitudes towards cosmetic surgical procedures among college-aged young adults were evaluated. Methods: A search identified 20 studies published from 2002 to 2021 that focused on cosmetic surgical procedures among young adults. Each study used survey-based data to determine attitudes, acceptance, interests, perceptions, and beliefs about cosmetic surgical procedures among college-aged students in the United States. Results: The proportion of college-aged participants who had undergone cosmetic surgical procedures ranged from 1.3% to 6.4% with surveys reporting that between 21 and 43% were interested in procedures in the future. In general, young women were more likely to express interest in cosmetic surgical procedures than young men. Studies consistently demonstrated an inverse relationship between body satisfaction and use of aesthetic procedures among this patient population. Other factors associated with acceptance and approval of cosmetic surgical procedures included importance of appearance to self-worth, concern with social standing and attractiveness, investment in appearance, media influence on body image, and positive attitudes towards celebrities. Exposure to cosmetic surgery advertising was correlated with increased approval of cosmetic surgical procedures, especially the perception that advertising influences "others" more than survey respondents themselves. Conclusion: Interest in cosmetic surgical procedures continues to grow among young adults in the United States. In the future, this cohort is likely to become an increasingly important demographic to target for education, advertising, and research regarding cosmetic surgical procedures.
473 Viral Vanity: Unmasking Plastic Surgery Trends on Instagram and TikTok

Abstract:Abstract Aim Social media exerts substantial influence on contemporary life, shaping the collective narrative. A current rising trend known as “academic social media” involves healthcare professionals leveraging social platforms for networking, patient education and recruitment. This cross-sectional analysis of Instagram and TikTok short video content aims to identify the perceptions of plastic surgery on social media. Method A search of the term “plastic surgery” was performed on Instagram and TikTok, and the first 100 short videos on each platform (TikTok’s and Reels) were reviewed. Posts were categorised based on their country of origin, the poster’s profession, content’s nature, sub-specialty, the accuracy of information and impact. Results The assessed videos garnered 355,909,365 views (302,881,140 on TikTok). Predominantly, the content was informative (66 posts), closely followed by advertisements and before-and-after visuals (59 each). Only 13 videos featured educational material. Aesthetic surgery overwhelmingly dominated, with only 5 videos addressing a different subspecialty. Plastic surgeons generated most content (42% on TikTok and 75% on Instagram), followed by patient-documented material. Cross-platform overlap was minimal. Approximately 27% of TikTok and 12.5% of Instagram videos contained inaccuracies with documented unsafe practices, such as a patient recounting an additional cosmetic procedure performed without consent. Conclusions The widespread popularity of short-form plastic surgery videos is evident. While many come from reliable sources, there is a notable emphasis on cosmetic procedures, presenting a skewed view of the diverse practices within plastic surgery. The significant prevalence of inaccuracies on TikTok, especially given its growing popularity compared to Instagram, raises concerns about the public dissemination of misinformation.

Abstract:Qualitative Health Research, Ahead of Print. Cosmetic procedures are amongst the most popular procedures sought after by medical tourists. Cosmetic medical tourists utilise numerous sources of information when planning their trips including, where available, discussing their decision with previous medical tourists. Current research on online support communities has investigated the interactions of patients with various health conditions with online support; however, limited research exists on cosmetic medical tourists' participation in online support communities. Here we report findings from our qualitative interview study of Australian cosmetic medical tourists. We found that many of our participants experienced stigma regarding their intention to receive cosmetic procedures and to travel overseas from within their local social networks. Participating in online communities (Facebook groups) enabled them to access information and support from other cosmetic medical tourists. Through using public posting and messaging functionality of the communities, they performed two distinct roles in the groups that parallel the temporal transitions of their journeys: they were information and support seekers pre-surgery and information and support providers post-surgery. The reciprocity they practiced in the provider role occurred due to their desire to 'pay forward' the support they had received from others pre-surgery. This role was performed as a collective, community-based reciprocity rather than a direct mutual exchange. Some participants also transitioned their online relationships into enduing offline friendships demonstrating how online interactions may become enmeshed with broader social networks.

Abstract:Background: Female genital cosmetic surgery (FGCS) changes the structure and appearance of healthy external genitalia. We aimed to identify discourses that help explain and rationalise FGCS and to derive from them possibilities for informing clinical education. Methods: We interviewed 16 health professionals and 5 non-health professionals who deal with women's bodies using a study-specific semi-structured interview guide. We analysed transcripts using a three-step iterative process: identifying themes relevant to indications for FGCS, identifying the discourses within which they were positioned, and categorising and theorising discourses. Results: We identified discourses that we categorised within four themes: Diversity and the Normal Vulva (diversity was both acknowledged and rejected); Indications for FGCS (Functional, Psychological, Appearance); Ethical Perspectives; and Reasons Women Seek FGCS (Pubic Depilation, Media Representation, Pornography, Advertising Regulations, Social Pressure, Genital Unfamiliarity). Conclusions: Vulvar aesthetics constitute a social construct to which medical practice and opinion contribute and by which they are influenced; education and reform need to occur on all fronts. Resources that not only establish genital diversity but also challenge limited vulvar aesthetics could be developed in consultation with women, healthcare practitioners, mental health specialists, and others with knowledge of social constructs of women's bodies.

Abstract:Abstract: In order to determine highly immunogenic severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS‐CoV) epitope peptides capable of inducing long‐lasting immunity, we first screened immunoglobulin‐G (IgG) antibodies reactive to 197 different overlapping 15‐mers from the SARS‐CoV proteins in the sera of three infected patients. Forty‐two peptides among them were reactive to the sera from all three patients. Consequently, we tested for the reactivity of these 42 peptides to patients' sera (n = 45) at 6‐month post‐infection. The significantly higher levels of IgG antibodies specific to three (S791, M207 and N161) of 42 peptides were detectable in the post‐infection sera from 23 (51%), 27 (60%) and 19 (42%) of 45 patients, respectively. These three peptides, recognized by their long‐lasting immunity, may provide a better understanding of the immunogenicity of SARS‐CoV.

Abstract:Female genital cosmetic surgery (FGCS) is increasingly popular. Medical organisations report concern about adverse outcomes and inadequate clinical indications. Given the Internet's role in health decisions, we aimed to discover what was being communicated about FGCS on Australian provider websites. Thematic analysis of 31 prominent websites identified six themes: seeking aesthetic perfection; resisting natural diversity; gaining from FGCS; indications for surgery; a simple procedure; and ethical practice. Desirable vulvas were represented as 'neat' and 'youthful'. Sites promoted a discourse in which to be 'feminine' means having no visible sex organs, consistent with the historical repression of women's sexuality. FGCS was constructed as a simple and empowering solution, improving women's comfort, hygiene, self-esteem and sexual relationships. The apparent primary concern was commercial. Attention was rarely paid to ethics. Sites reinforced women's responsibility to strive for aesthetic perfection, implied that vulvar diversity is pathological, made unfounded claims for the benefits of FGCS and downplayed adverse consequences. Findings have implications for public health and medical authorities in countries where FGCS is practised and advertised. Enforcing the first do no harm principle would reduce websites' capacity to promote discourses and practices that damage women's bodies and wellbeing.

Abstract:Social media platforms like Instagram (Meta Platforms, Inc., Menlo Park, California, United States) and Snapchat (Snap Inc., California, United States) significantly influence motivations for aesthetic surgery by promoting idealized and digitally enhanced images. Understanding their impact on body image dissatisfaction and acceptance of cosmetic procedures is crucial. A systematic review following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines explored the link between social media, body image dissatisfaction, and cosmetic surgery. The review included 25 studies with 13,731 participants. Specific findings revealed that 70% of young adult women and 60% of young adult men report dissatisfaction with their bodies, leading to increased surgical considerations. The search process utilized databases such as PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar, employing keywords like "cosmetic surgery," "social media," and "body image dissatisfaction" for articles published between January 2013 and December 2023. Both men and women show increased dissatisfaction with body parts, leading to surgical considerations. Social media's emphasis on visual aesthetics fosters body dissatisfaction and social appearance anxiety, especially through selfies. Cultural norms and celebrity influence further shape beauty perceptions. While social media promotes cosmetic surgery acceptance, ethical concerns about misleading advertisements, unrealistic beauty standards, and patient privacy persist. This underscores the need for strategies to promote healthy body image and informed choices in the digital age.
