Abstract:With the increasing global energy demand and environmental problems, the photoreduction of CO2 into valuable chemical materials is considered to be an ideal way to recycle carbon resources. Naturally, the design and synthesis of efficient photocatalysts for the photocatalytic reduction of CO2 still face great challenges. In this work, a series of stable hybrid photocatalysts TpPa@IEF have been born by integrating the two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks TpPa-1 with Ti-based metal-organic framework IEF-11. The photocatalytic performance of TpPa@IEF has been evaluated in a gas-solid reaction mode under visible light as well as no sacrificial agents and photosensitizers. The experimental results show that TpPa@IEF exhibit the excellent photocatalytic activity in pure and dilute CO2 (10%) environments. The introduction of IEF-11 has resulted in to a significant improvement in photocatalytic performance, TpPa@IEF achieve a great CO generation rate of 78.87 μmol·g-1·h-1 in pure CO2, notably, and obtain another excellent CO generation rate of 116.47 μmol·g-1·h-1 in dilute CO2 (10%), which is 3.63 and 8.46 times higher than that of TpPa-1, respectively. The excellent photocatalytic performance of TpPa@IEF hybrids stems from the high charge separation efficiency and CO2 capture ability, as well as the abundant catalytic active sites. The preparation of TpPa@IEF hybrid materials provides a novelty perspective for the design and synthesis of efficient photocatalysts.

Abstract:Halide perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) have shown great promise for the photochemical conversion of CO2. However, the fast carrier recombination rates and inadequate adsorption/activation for CO2 molecules have seriously restricted their practical application. Herein, an innovative step-scheme-based Cs2CuBr4/TiO2 (CCB/TiO2) photocatalyst was prepared by embedding Cs2CuBr4 PQDs in a mesoporous TiO2 matrix, which exhibits considerable potential as candidates for CO2 photoreduction under simulated sunlight. Remarkably, the optimised CCB/TiO2 photocatalyst delivered an impressive CO2 reduction activity, which was 3.1 and 16.0 times higher than those achieved by pure Cs2CuBr4 and TiO2, respectively. Furthermore, the S-scheme charge transfer mode was comprehensively corroborated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, photo-assisted Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM), in situ irradiated X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS), and electron spin resonance spectroscopy (ESR). On basis of theoretical calculations and in situ diffuse reflectance spectra (DRIFTS), the CCB/TiO2 exhibited a reduced energy barrier of the rate-determining step, which facilitated the CO2 photoreduction reaction.

Achieving simultaneous Cu particles anchoring in meso-porous TiO2 nanofabrication for enhancing photo-catalytic CO2 reduction through rapid charge separation

Abstract:A facile solvothermal approach was successfully employed to prepare titanium oxide (TiO2) nanoaggregates with simultaneous copper particles anchoring. The as-synthesized composite could convert CO2 into CH4 and CO products under simulated solar irradiation. The impact of copper loading amounts on the photoreduction capability was evaluated. It was found proper amount of Cu loading could enhance the activity of CO2 photoreduction. As a result, the optimal composite (TiO2-Cu-5%) consisting of TiO2 supported with 5% (mole ratio) Cu exhibits 2.2 times higher CH4 yield and 3 times higher CO yield compared with pure TiO2. Conduction band calculated from the band gap and valence X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) indicated TiO2 nanoaggregates have suitable band edge alignment with respect to the CO2/CH4 and CO2/CO redox potential. Furthermore, with involving of Cu particles, an efficient separation of photogenerated charges was achieved on the basis of photocurrent response and photoluminescence spectra results, which contributed to the improved photocatalytic performance. The present work suggested that the Cu-decorated TiO2 could serve as an efficient photocatalyst for solar-driven CO2 photoreduction.

Designed synthesis of Cu2O quantum dots/TiO2 nanotubes heterostructure as a photocatalyst for converting CO2 to CH4

Abstract:In this work, H+ in oxalic acid was used instead of Na+ to obtain titanate nanosheets through P200 hydrolysis, which further curled to form a multilayer TiO2 nanotubes (NTs) structure. Then, Cu2O quantum dots (QDs) were successfully loaded on TiO2 NTs by hydrothermal method using fructose as a reducing agent. The optical, impedance, and photocurrent tests indicated that the composite structure improved its optoelectronic performance. The photocatalytic H2 production and CO2 reduction efficiency of Cu2O QDs/TiO2 NTs were lower than those of TiO2 NTs. However, the molar ratio of CH4 to CO produced by CO2 reduction of Cu2O QDs/TiO2 NTs composite catalyst was greater than that of pure TiO2 NTs. The CH4 production accounted for 97%, indicating that the composite catalyst had a high CH4 selectivity. The experimental and DFT calculation results proved that the Z‐scheme heterojunction accelerated the separation and transfer of photo‐generated carriers, and broadened the absorption range of visible light. Improving CO2 Photoconversion with Ionic Liquid and Co Single Atoms

Abstract:Photocatalytic CO2 conversion promises an ideal route to store solar energy into chemical bonds. However, sluggish electron kinetics and unfavorable product selectivity remain unresolved challenges. Here, an ionic liquid, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate, and borate-anchored Co single atoms were separately loaded on ultrathin g-C3N4 nanosheets. The optimized nanocomposite photocatalyst produces CO and CH4 from CO2 and water under UV-vis light irradiation, exhibiting a 42-fold photoactivity enhancement compared with g-C3N4 and nearly 100% selectivity towards CO2 reduction. Experimental and theoretical results reveal that the ionic liquid extracts electrons and facilitates CO2 reduction, whereas Co single atoms trap holes and catalyze water oxidation. More importantly, the maximum electron transfer efficiency for CO2 photoreduction, as measured with in-situ μs-transient absorption spectroscopy, is found to be 35.3%, owing to the combined effect of the ionic liquid and Co single atoms. This work offers a feasible strategy for efficiently converting CO2 to valuable chemicals.

Abstract:Photocatalytic CO2 reduction into valuable fuel and chemical production has been regarded as a prospective strategy for tackling with the issues of the increasing of greenhouse gases and shortage of sustainable energy. A composite photocatalysis system employing a semiconductor enriched with oxygen vacancy and coupled with metallic cocatalyst can facilitate charge separation and transfer electrons. In this work, mesoporous TiO2 and titanium-based perovskite oxides (BaTiO3 and SrTiO3) nanoparticle assembly incorporated with abundant oxygen vacancy and copper particles have been successfully synthesized for CO2 photoreduction. As an example, the TiO2 decorated with different amounts of Cu particles has an impact on photocatalytic CO2 reduction into CH4 and CO. Particularly, the optimal TiO2/Cu-0.1 exhibits nearly 13.5 times higher CH4 yield (22.27 μmol g-1 h-1) than that of pristine TiO2 (1.65 μmol g-1 h-1). The as-obtained BaTiO3/Cu-0.1 and SrTiO3/Cu-0.1 also show enhanced CH4 yields towards photocatalytic CO2 reduction compared with pristine ones. Based on the temperature programmed desorption (TPD) and photo/electrochemical measurements, the co-embedding of Cu particles and abundant oxygen vacancy into the titanium-based oxides could promote CO2 adsorption capacity as well as separation and transfer of photoinduced electron-hole pairs, and finally result in efficient CO2 photoreduction upon the TiO2/Cu, SrTiO3/Cu, and BaTiO3/Cu composites.

Abstract:Photocatalytic CO2 reduction into carbonaceous feedstock chemicals is a promising renewable energy technology to convert solar energy and greenhouse gases into chemical fuels. Here, a covalent triazine-based framework (CTF) is demonstrated as an efficient cocatalyst to reduce CO2 under visible-light irradiation. The nitrogen-rich triazine moieties in CTF contribute to CO2 adsorption, while the periodical pore structure of CTF favors the accommodation of CO2 and electron mediator. Immobilization of cobalt species onto CTF promotes the photocatalytic activity with a 44-fold enhancement over pristine CTF and the optimal CO production rate of the obtained Co/CTFs was up to 50 μmol g-1 h-1 . The results of solid-state UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra (UV-vis DRS), CO2 adsorption and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) illustrated that the increased activity was ascribed to the enhanced CO2 capture capacity, improved absorption of visible-light and facilitated the transfer of charge from CTF to CO2 molecules. The CTF not only serves as a substrate for active Co species, but also bridges the photosensitizer with cobalt catalytic sites for the efficient transfer of photoexcited electrons. This work highlights the capability and ease of fabricating covalent organic framework-based photocatalytic systems that are potentially useful for energy-conversion applications.
Rational Design of Honeycomb-Like APTES-TiO2/COF Heterostructures: Promoted Intramolecular Charge Transfer for Visible-Light-driven Catalytic CO2 Reduction

Abstract:Utilizing organic structures to combine with TiO2 is regarded as a potent strategy for meliorating the photo-catalytic performance of TiO2. Nonetheless, exploration towards the impact of modulation at organic molecular level for the COF construction (e.g., the types, substituent group and the arrangement of the building blocks), upon the optical or/and electronic features of TiO2-COF heterostructures is relatively scarce. Herein, a nitrogen-rich covalent organic framework (COF) which is employed to covalently integrate with amino-propyltriethoxysilane modified TiO2 (APTES-TiO2) through Schiff-base reaction. Due to the significant charge density disparity between the two building units, 2, 4, 6-tris (4-aminophenyl)-1, 3, 5-triazine (TAPT) and melem in the hybridized TiO2@TMP-COF with honeycomb-like morphology, the promoted intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) brings about accelerated charge delivery efficiency within the heterostructure by contrast to the structure-similar COF established hybrid, TiO2@TM-COF, which is built by the identical approach except for the involvement of TAPT monomer. Accordingly, the photocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) dominated by TiO2@TMP-COF affords the CO production of 6.76 mu mol center dot g(-1)center dot h(-1), about 3 times that of TiO2@TM-COF; still, the enhanced catalytic efficiency than either the constituent TiO2 or TMP-COF owes much to the Z-scheme charge migration dynamics and augmented light-capturing capability within the hybrid. Our study opens a new landscape of heterostructure establishment for simultaneously ameliorating light absorption and accelerating charge delivery in photocatalysis.
Construction of TiO 2 -Covalent Organic Framework Z-Scheme Hybrid Through Coordination Bond for Photocatalytic CO 2 Conversion

Abstract:In this work, a covalent organic framework (COF), which is constructed by the building blocks of [5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-aminophenyl)porphinato]copper(II) (CuTAPP) and p-benzaldehyde, is employed to integrate with TiO2 for the purpose of establishing a Z-scheme hybrid. Within the system, isonicotinic acid performs the role of a bridge that connects the two components through a coordination bond. Further photocatalytic application reveals the hybrid framework is able to catalyze CO2 conversion under simulated solar light, resulting in CO production rate of 50.5 mu mol g (1) h (1), about 9.9 and 24.5 times that of COF and pristine TiO2, respectively. The ameliorated catalytic performance owes much to the porphyrin block acting as photosensitizer that augments the light absorbance, and the establishment of Z-scheme system between the inorganic and organic components that enhances the separation of the carriers. In addition, the chemical bridge also ensures a steady usage and stable charge delivery in the catalysis. Our study sheds light on the development of versatile approaches to covalently incorporate COFs with inorganic semiconductors. Abstract:Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs)1–3 are known for their specific interactions with gas molecules4,5; combined with their rich and ordered porosity, this makes them promising candidates for the photocatalytic conversion of gas molecules to useful products6. Attempts to use MOFs or MOF-based composites for CO2 photoreduction6–13, however, usually result in far lower CO2 conversion efficiency compared to state-of-the-art solid-state or molecular catalysts14–18, even when facilitated by sacrificial reagents. Here, we create 'molecular compartments' inside a MOF by growing TiO2 inside different pores of MIL-101 and its derivatives (Fig. 1). This compartmentalization allows for synergy between the light-absorbing/electron-generating TiO2 units and the catalytic metal clusters in the MOFs, and therefore facilitates photocatalytic CO2 reduction, concurrent with production of O2. An apparent quantum efficiency for CO2 photoreduction of 11.3% at 350 nm, is observed in a composite, 42%-TiO2-in-Cr-MIL-101-NO2. TiO2 units in one type of compartment in this construct are estimated to be 44 times more active than those in the other type, underlining the role of precise positioning of TiO2 in this system.

TiO2/MXene Ti3C2 Composite with Excellent Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction Activity

Abstract:Photocatalytic CO2 reduction for solar fuel production has received enormous attention due to its ability for solving both energy crisis and CO2 pollution. However, fabrication of cheap and efficient materials for photocatalytic CO2 reduction is still challenging. Herein, TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) in situ grew on highly conductive MXene Ti3C2 through calcination method. And a unique rice crust-like structure was achieved through the uniform distribution of TiO2 nanoparticles on Ti3C2. This optimized TiO2/Ti3C2 composite exhibited a 3.7 times higher photocatalytic CO2 reduction performance for CH4-production (0.22 mu mol h(-1)) than commercial TiO2 (P25). The detailed photocatalytic CO2 reduction mechanism using TiO2/Ti3C2 was confirmed through the (CO2)-C-13 isotopic test and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy. Experimental evidence along with preliminary calculation was also used to further elucidate the proposed photocatalytic enhancement mechanism. This extraordinary photocatalytic performance was due to the unique morphology and the features of individual components in the composite. Namely, fluffy rice crust-like structure of the prepared samples rendered the composite with large population of the surface-active sites. Ultrahigh conductivity of Ti3C2 facilitated the photogenerated electron transfer and suppressed its recombination with photogenerated holes. The Self‐sacrificial Templated Synthesis of Fe/N Co‐doping TiO2 for Enhanced CO2 Photocatalytic Reduction

Abstract:As a green photocatalyst, TiO2 has been widely used in adsorption, desorption and redox reaction, but the wide energy band and moderate visible light absorption have greatly inhibited its applications in photocatalysis. The effective method of enhancing the performance of catalysts is the development of heterojunction and metal‐nonmetal co‐doping. Herein, Fe‐N co‐doped TiO2 heterojunction photocatalysts (FexTi@C) were successfully synthesized by calcining a self‐sacrificial template (NH2‐MIL‐125(Ti)) injected with Fe3+ solution. X‐ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), N2 adsorption/desorption analysis, and photoelectrochemical tests were used to characterize FexTi@C, showing multiple rutile/anatase TiO2 heterojunction structure, low bandgap, and significant absorption in visible light. In addition, the Ti‐O‐Fe tetrahedra and more oxygen vacancies were provided since the doped N is from the pristine MOF and the radii of Fe3+ and Ti4+ are similar, which improved the photocatalytic efficiency of CO2 reduction to CH4, especially the Fe0.8Ti@C reached 7.8‐fold and 10.2‐fold CH4 yield increase compared with the original TiMOF template and the undoped Ti@C, respectively. This work presents a simple method for the fabrication of low bandgap semiconductors, and also makes a new attempt at the synergistic effect between the in‐situ elements and valence bonds of MOF‐derived catalysts.

Ultrathin TiO2 Flakes Optimizing Solar Light Driven CO2 Reduction

Abstract:Photoreduction of CO2 into fuels over TiO2 helps to relieve the increasing energy crisis and the worsening global climate, while the low energetic efficiency impedes its large-scale applications. Herein, ultrathin TiO2 flakes are first put forward to fully optimize their crucial CO2 photoreduction processes through affording abundant catalytically active sites and increased two-dimensional conductivity. 1.66nm thick TiO2 flakes are successfully fabricated by virtue of lamellar TiO−2 octylamine hybrid. The atomic thickness endows TiO2 with ultrahigh fraction of surface atoms, which ensures stronger UV light absorption compared with its bulk counterpart. Benefiting from the increased density of states near Fermi level and the vast majority of charge density concentrating on the surface, the ultrathin TiO2 flakes show increased conductivity confirmed by the temperature-dependent resistivities. The 3 times higher fluorescence lifetime, revealed by the time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy, accounts for the increased separate rate of photoexcited electron-hole pairs. As an outcome, the ultrathin TiO2 flakes achieve a formate formation rate of 1.9μmolg−1h−1, 450 times higher than that of bulk counterpart and also roughly 2 times higher than that of previously reported Ag-modified BaLa4Ti4O15. Briefly, our study will unlock many opportunities for designing efficient CO2 photoreduction performance.
Assembling Ultrafine TiO2 Nanoparticles on UiO-66 Octahedrons to Promote Selective Photocatalytic Conversion of CO2 to CH4 at a Low Concentration

Abstract:The improvement of CO2 conversion efficiency over semiconductor photocatalysts is usually restricted by their poor CO2 adsorption capacity. In this work, a zirconium-based organic framework (UiO-66) was introduced as an effective CO2 adsorbent to couple with TiO2 photocatalyst. The designed two-step strategy endowed the TiO2/UiO-66 composite with hierarchical porous structure, which ensured the sufficient exposed catalytic sites and a high CO2 uptake of 78.9 cm(3) g(-1). In consequence, a high CH4 production rate of 17.9 mu mol g(-1) h(-1) with 90.4 % selectivity was achieved in a mild gas-solid system using water as electron donors. Interestingly, the photocatalytic efficiency reached the similar level to that of pure CO2 atmosphere even under diluted CO2 condition (<= 2%). Further, the enhanced mechanism was discussed in detail to present the superiority of such designed composite structure from the aspects of CO2 enrichment and exposure of sufficient catalytic sites.
Construction of CuInS2/C/TiO2 hierarchical tandem heterostructures with optimized CO2 photoreduction under visible light

Abstract:The precise regulation of the nano-catalyst structure is a big challenge that limits the application of photocatalytic technology in CO2 reduction. Herein, to improve the utilization of sunlight, the separation and transfer efficiency of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, and the surface catalytic reaction process, CuInS2/C/TiO2 (CIS/C/T) hierarchical tandem heterostructure have been rationally designed. Multiple in-situ characterizations and DFT simulations show that CQDs not only act as a co-catalyst, but also act as a bridge between TiO2 (T) and CuInS2 (CIS), which further attribute to the efficient separation and enrichment of photogenerated electron-hole pairs while effectively avoiding the recombination. In consideration of the excellent broad-spectrum absorption, the CO2-to-CO photoreduction performance of the optimal CIS/C/T reaches up to 7.73 μmol g-1h−1, about 3.16 times enhancement of C/T. Combined with in-situ DRIFTs, the intrinsic structure–activity relationship is pointed out, and extended to other similar TiO2-based catalytic systems (In2S3/C/TiO2). This work will provide a new universal strategy for the design and synthesis of high-performance nano-photocatalysts.

Abstract:The huge consumption of fossil fuels in industrialization has caused increasingly aggravated greenhouse effect. To address this problem, converting CO 2 into liquid solar fuels by photoelectrochemical technology is highly expected. In order to enhance the photoelectrochemical performance of the photocathodes, the composite thin film photocathodes have been constructed by covering CuFeO 2 nanoparticles (CFO NPs) on CuInS 2 (CIS) thin film surface by the impregnation (I-CFO/CIS) and the template method (T-CFO/CIS). In addition, the p–p heterostructure is formed between CIS and CFO NPs. Furthermore, the adsorption behaviors of intermediates are altered because of the well dispersed and smaller size of CFO NPs on T-CFO/CIS thin films. As a result, enhanced photoelectrocatalytic CO 2 reduction is achieved. The yield of methanol on T-CFO/CIS thin film reaches up to 270 μ M, which is 3.5 and 11.2 times as high as that on I-CFO/CIS and CIS thin films, respectively. At the applied voltage of −0.65 V vs saturated calomel electrode (SCE), the maximal faradic efficiency of methanol on T-CFO/CIS photocathodes is as high as 87%.

Boosting CO2 Electroreduction Via the Synergistic Effect of Tuning Cationic Clusters and Visible-Light Irradiation

Abstract:Introducing an external light field can increase the intrinsic activity and energy efficiency for electrochemical CO2 reduction. Herein, a synergistic strategy that introduces photosensitive components and visible light into a stable system is reported to improve the performance for CO2 reduction. The catalytic kinetics studies indicate that the synergistic effect of implantation of cationic Ti and additional light driving is the primary responsibility for accelerating the first electron transfer to form a *COO- intermediate. This leads to a satisfactory CO2-to-CO conversion for Zr/Ti-NB-Co in terms of high selectivity (Faradaic efficiency of 93.6% at -0.7 V), remarkable catalytic activity (production rate up to 546 mmol g(-1) h(-1) at -1.1 V), excellent long-term stability (without performance decay over 11 h), and large turnover frequency of 1028 h(-1) at -1.1 V under visible light. These results imply that the photodriven Ti-based porphyrin catalyst not only can deliver more electrons, but also can act as a photoswitch to adjust the electron transfer pathway.
Ultrathin carbon-coated Fe-TiO 2-x nanostructures for enhanced photocatalysis under visible-light irradiation

Abstract:Extending solar-light harvesting and improving charge separation are contributing to high-performance semiconductor photocatalysis. In this work, ultrathin carbon-coated Fe-TiO 2-x nanostructures were prepared via one-pot calcination strategy for tetracycline degradation under visible light. The experimental results showed that the carbon-coated Fe-TiO 2-x composites displayed remarkably enhanced visible-light harvesting, and the forbidden band width drops to 2.60 eV. In addition, the transient photocurrent responses and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy indicated the highest charge separation and lowest interfacial migration resistance of carbon-coated Fe-TiO 2-x -3% composite, and the fluorescence emission spectroscopy and linear sweep voltammetry curves also supported these above findings. The carbon-coated Fe-TiO 2-x -3% sample showed the best photocatalytic performance with a rate constant of 0.02512 min −1 towards tetracycline degradation, approximately 3.02 times that of commercial TiO 2 , mainly attributed to the formation of Fe doping, oxygen vacancies, and relatively high surface areas.

Abstract:Flavin coenzymes play a variety of roles in biological systems. This Perspective highlights the chemical versatility of flavins by reviewing research on five flavoenzymes that have been studied in our laboratory. Each of the enzymes discussed in this review [the acyl-CoA dehydrogenases (ACDs), CDP-6-deoxy-l-threo-d-glycero-4-hexulose-3-dehydrase reductase (E3), CDP-4-aceto-3,6-dideoxygalactose synthase (YerE), UDP-galactopyranose mutase (UGM), and type II isopentenyl diphosphate:dimethylallyl diphosphate isomerase (IDI-2)] utilizes flavin in a distinct role. In particular, the catalytic mechanisms of two of these enzymes, UGM and IDI-2, may involve novel flavin chemistry.
