Abstract:Electrochemical water splitting, a crucial reaction for renewable energy storage, demands highly efficient and stable catalysts. Defect and interface engineering has been widely acknowledged to play a pivotal role in improving electrocatalytic performance. Herein, we demonstrate a facile strategy to construct sulfur vacancy (Sv)-engineered Co3S4/MoS2-interfaced nanosheet arrays to modulate the interface electronic structure in situ reduction with NaBH4. The abundant sulfur vacancies and well-arranged nanosheet arrays in Sv-Co3S4/MoS2 lead to pronounced electrocatalytic properties for hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions (HER/OER) in an alkaline medium, with observed overpotentials of 156 and 209 mV at 10 mA cm-2, respectively. Additionally, as a bifunctional electrocatalyst, Sv-Co3S4/MoS2 requires a cell voltage of 1.67 V at 10 mA cm-2 for overall water splitting and exhibits long-term stability with activity sustained for more than 20 h. This study provides a novel approach to producing transition metal compound-interfaced electrocatalysts with rich vacancies under mild conditions, showcasing their potential for efficient water splitting applications.

Abstract:The realization of water electrolysis on the basis of highly active, cost-effective electrocatalysts is significant yet challenging for achieving sustainable hydrogen production from water. Herein, N-doped Ni3 S2 /N-doped MoS2 1D hetero-nanowires supported by Ni foam (N-Ni3 S2 /N-MoS2 /NF) are readily synthesized through a chemical transformation strategy by using NiMoO4 nanowire array growth on Ni foam (NiMoO4 /NF) as the starting material. With the in situ generation of Ni3 S2 /MoS2 heterointerfaces within nanowires and the incorporation of N- anions, an extraordinary hydrophilic nature with abundant, well-exposed active sites and optimal reaction dynamics for both oxidation and reduction of water are obtained. Attributed to these properties, as-converted N-Ni3 S2 /N-MoS2 /NF exhibits highly efficient electrocatalytic activities for both hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions under alkaline conditions. The superior bifunctional properties of N-Ni3 S2 /N-MoS2 /NF enable it to effectively catalyze the overall water-splitting reaction.

Abstract:A stable, efficient, and economical bifunctional electrolytic catalyst would be incredibly beneficial for the development of hydrogen production by electrocatalytic water splitting. In this study, we synthesized a novel MnS–MnO heterogeneous nanocube@N, S-doped carbon (MnS–MnO@NSC). MnS–MnO nanocubes possess rich heterogeneous interfaces and plentiful catalytic active sites to promote electrochemical reactions, while the N, S-doped carbon shell possesses excellent conductivity and catalytic properties and protects the nanocubes. MnS–MnO@NSC exhibited excellent electrochemical properties as an effective bifunctional electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in KOH solution. In the HER, the overpotential was as low as 124 mV at a current density of 10 mA·cm−2, while in the OER, it was only 340 mV at 100 mA·cm−2 under the same conditions. In addition, a MnS–MnO@NSC||MnS–MnO@NSC electrolyzer exhibited almost comparable activity and higher steadiness than those exhibited by the state-of-the-art Pt/C||RuO2/C system for full water splitting in KOH solution.Graphical abstract

High efficiency in overall water-splitting via Co-doping heterointerface-rich NiS2/MoS2 nanosheets electrocatalysts

Abstract:Designing heterostructure in electrocatalysts can enhance the reaction kinetics of overall water splitting by exposing more active sites and promoting the electron transfer. Mo-based and Ni-based sulfides, which have respectively shown excellent catalytic activity in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), can remedy the shortcomings of single half-reaction by synergistic effect. Herein, we realized the in-situ growth of Co-doped NiS2/MoS2 nanosheet on CFP (Co-NiS2/MoS2) using a two-step hydrothermal method. The Co-NiS2/MoS2 nanosheets exhibit superior activity for durable HER and OER, obviously superior to those of the single-structure catalysts. Moreover, the cell voltage is only 1.63 V at 10 mA cm−2 for overall water splitting. The density functional theory simulation results show the hydrogen adsorption energy in Co-NiS2/MoS2 system is closer to zero than others, further suggesting heterostructure can reduce energy barrier of water splitting.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic water splitting is a crucial area in sustainable energy development, and the development of highly efficient bifunctional catalysts that exhibit activity toward both hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of paramount importance. Co3O4 is a promising candidate catalyst, owing to the variable valence of Co, which can be exploited to enhance the bifunctional catalytic activity of HER and OER through rational adjustments of the electronic structure of Co atoms. In this study, we employed a plasma-etching strategy in combination with an in situ filling of heteroatoms to etch the surface of Co3O4, creating abundant oxygen vacancies, while simultaneously filling them with nitrogen and sulfur heteroatoms. The resulting N/S-VO-Co3O4 exhibited favorable bifunctional activity for alkaline electrocatalytic water splitting, with significantly enhanced HER and OER catalytic activity compared to pristine Co3O4. In an alkaline overall water-splitting simulated electrolytic cell, N/S-VO-Co3O4 || N/S-VO-Co3O4 showed excellent overall water splitting catalytic activity, comparable to noble metal benchmark catalysts Pt/C || IrO2, and demonstrated superior long-term catalytic stability. Additionally, the combination of in situ Raman spectroscopy with other ex situ characterizations provided further insight into the reasons behind the enhanced catalyst performance achieved through the in situ incorporation of N and S heteroatoms. This study presents a facile strategy for fabricating highly efficient cobalt-based spinel electrocatalysts incorporated with double heteroatoms for alkaline electrocatalytic monolithic water splitting.

Abstract:Exploring robust and high-performance bifunctional electrocatalysts for overall water splitting is crucial for converting electric power to hydrogen energy, especially for the flexible utilization of intermittent green energy resources. Herein, pine-needle-like NiFe2O4 @Co3O4 heterostructure nanoarrays with abundant oxygen vacancies were deposited onto nickel foam via hydrothermal reaction, cathodic electrodeposition, and CaH2 reduction. The synergistic approach boosts the electrochemical activity of catalyst by improving conductivity, mass diffusion efficiency, and active site quantity. Accordingly, the optimal electrocatalyst exhibits outstanding catalytic activity with high electrochemical stability in an alkaline medium, providing low overpotentials of 251 mV and 77 mV respectively to achieve 10 mA·cm−2 for catalyzing OER and HER. Moreover, the as-fabricated bifunctional electrocatalyst only requires a cell voltage of 1.56 V to enable a current density of 10 mA·cm−2 for realizing water electrolysis, outperforming many other previously reported catalysts. This work provides an inspiration for developing open structure materials with synergistic effect, and demonstrates a feasible method to synthesis high-efficiency electrocatalysts for water splitting.

Abstract:The durability of electrocatalysts is comparably as important as the efficiency for practical applications. Transition metal sulfides usually undergo phase evolution during the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), making the resulting electrocatalysts unstable. Here we report the synthesis of Co-doped (Ni, Fe)1+xS (denoted as FeCoNiS), and that its derived electrocatalyst exhibited remarkably high OER activity and excellent stability with an overpotential of 164 mV for 10 mA cm−2 and a steady-state current density of 100 mA cm−2 for up to 2200 h. The impressive OER performance can be attributed to the electronic structure regulation of (Ni, Fe)1+xS via Co doping and the formation of polysulfides (Sn2−). Promisingly, a device assembled using FeCoNiS and MoNi4/MoO2 two-electrodes delivered a current density of 100 mA cm−2 at a low potential of 1.60 V for overall water splitting and worked stably for 1200 h at a current density of 200 mA cm−2. This work provides a new strategy to explore transition metal sulfides as efficient and stable catalysts for large-scale hydrogen production.

Abstract:Active bifunctional electrocatalysts that can catalyze both hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are highly desirable for overall water splitting. One such catalyst, NiCoP, demonstrates potential due to its unique electronic and structural properties that allow for efficient charge transfer between the catalyst and reactants. However, its OER performance is often unsatisfactory compared to its high HER performance. To address this problem, we prepared Mn-doped nickel cobalt phosphide (Mn-NiCoP) with nanopins arrays by in situ growth on nickel foam (NF), which only requires the overpotentials of 148 mV for HER and 266 mV for OER at a high current density of 100 mA cm −2 . Consequently, the achieved water splitting performance with Mn-NiCoP as both anode and cathode at a high current density of 100 mA cm −2 were as low as 1.69 V, and its maintenance was 94% after 240 hours. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the simultaneous improvement of both the OER and HER performances on Mn-NiCoP is due to the synergistic effect of the preferred moderate amount of Mn doping and Co alloying, through first-principles calculations of electronic structures, electrochemical stabilities, and reaction chemical potentials for different surface adsorption states. Overall, this work provides inspiration for optimizing the OER performance of traditional HER catalysts, thereby promoting overall water splitting using only one catalyst in the same solution.

Construction of Co2 P-Ni3 S2 /NF Heterogeneous Structural Hollow Nanowires as Bifunctional Electrocatalysts for Efficient Overall Water Splitting

Abstract:Designing efficient and stable transition metal-based catalysts for electrocatalytic water splitting is vital for the development of hydrogen production. Herein, a facile synthetic strategy is developed to fabricate transition metal-based heterogeneous structural Co2 P-Ni3 S2 hollow nanowires supported on nickel foam (Co2 P-Ni3 S2 /NF). Owing to the multiple active sites provided by transition metal compounds, large surface area of the unique hollow nanowire morphology, and the synergistic effect of Co2 P-Ni3 S2 heterostructure interfaces, Co2 P-Ni3 S2 /NF requires ultralow overpotentials of 110, 164 mV for HER and 331.7, 358.3 mV for OER at large current densities of 100, 500 mA cm-2 in alkaline medium, respectively. Importantly, the two-electrode electrolyzer assembled by Co2 P-Ni3 S2 /NF displays a cell voltage of 1.54 V at 10 mA cm-2 and operates stably over 24 h at 100 mA cm-2 , which performs better than reported transition metal-based bifunctional electrocatalysts. This work presents a successful fabrication of transition metal-based bifunctional HER/OER electrocatalysts at large-current density and brings new inspiration for developing applicable energy conversion materials.
Cobalt-based Co$_3$Mo3N/Co$_4$N/Co Metallic Heterostructure as a Highly Active Electrocatalyst for Alkaline Overall Water Splitting

Abstract:Alkaline water electrolysis is considered a commercially viable option for large-scale hydrogen production. However, this process still faces challenges due to the high voltage (>1.65 V at 10 mA cm$^{-2}$) and its limited stability at higher current densities due to the inefficient electron transport kinetics. Herein, a novel cobalt based metallic heterostructure (Co$_3$Mo3N/Co$_4$N/Co/Co) is designed for application for water electrolysis. Operando Raman experiments reveal that the formation of Co$_3$Mo3N/Co$_4$N/Co heterointerface boosts the free water adsorption and dissociation, resulting in a surplus of protons available for subsequent hydrogen production. Furthermore, the altered electronic structure of Co$_3$Mo3N/Co$_4$N/Co heterointerface optimizes the {\Delta}GH of nitrogen atoms at the interface. This synergistic effect between interfacial nitrogen atoms and metal phase cobalt creates highly efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) active sites, thereby enhancing the overall performance. Additionally, the heterostructure exhibits a rapid OH- adsorption rate, coupled with a strong adsorption strength, leading to improved oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance. Crucially, the metallic heterojunction facilitates fast electron transport, expediting the aforementioned reaction steps and ultimately improving the overall efficiency of water splitting. The water electrolyzer with Co$_3$Mo3N/Co$_4$N/Co/Co as a catalyst exhibits outstanding performance, requiring an impressively low cell voltage of 1.58 V at 10 mA cm$^{-2}$ and maintaining approximately 100% retention over a remarkable 100 h duration at 200 mA cm$^{-2}$. This performance significantly exceeds that of the commercial Pt/C || RuO2 electrolyzer.

Fluorine-doped Nickel Cobalt Oxide Spinel As Efficiently Bifunctional Catalyst for Overall Water Splitting

Abstract:Exploring highly active, low cost, and robust electrocatalysts for overall water splitting remains a great challenge. Herein, a fluorine-doped nickel cobaltate spinel (NiCo2O4) is derived from the bimetallic nickel/cobalt metal-organic framework (CoNi-MOF) by a facile solvothermal approach and followed by an annealing process. It displays that the proposed NiCo2O4 nanostructure is combined with electro-catalytic active NiO and CoF2 nanoparticles. All of these nanoparticles are embedded homogeneously within the mesoporous carbon matrix to form abundant catalytic sites, leading to a strong synergetic effect with ionic/semi-ionic F and N atoms (denoted as NiCo2O4/NiO/CoF2@mC). It shows that the NiCo2O4/NiO/CoF2@mC hybrid obtained under 700 degrees C (denoted as NiCo2O4/NiO/CoF2@mC(700)) can be employed as efficiently bifunctional catalysts for hydrogen evolution (HER) and oxygen evolution reactions (OER) in alkaline solution. The NiCo2O4/NiO/CoF2@mC(700) hybrid presents the faster and more efficient charge transfer, thus displaying an excellent electrocatalytic activity with low overpotentials of -45.3 mV and 1.47 V to reach a current density of 10 mAcm(-2) and Tafel slopes of 29 and 78 mV dec(-1) for the HER and OER, respectively. A two-electrode electrolyzer based on the NiCo2O4/NiO/CoF2@mC(700) catalyst as both the anode and cathode exhibits outstanding stability for sustained water splitting with a cell voltage of only 1.56 V at 10 mA cm(-2). This study not only opens a new avenue for designing efficient and flexible catalysts but also extends the application of metal organic frameworks in renewable energy resources. Synergistic Interfacial and Doping Engineering of Heterostructured NiCo(OH)x-CoyW as an Efficient Alkaline Hydrogen Evolution Electrocatalyst

Abstract:Abstract To achieve high efficiency of water electrolysis to produce hydrogen (H 2 ), developing non-noble metal-based catalysts with considerable performance have been considered as a crucial strategy, which is correlated with both the interphase properties and multi-metal synergistic effects. Herein, as a proof of concept, a delicate NiCo(OH) x -Co y W catalyst with a bush-like heterostructure was realized via gas-template-assisted electrodeposition, followed by an electrochemical etching-growth process, which ensured a high active area and fast gas release kinetics for a superior hydrogen evolution reaction, with an overpotential of 21 and 139 mV at 10 and 500 mA cm −2 , respectively. Physical and electrochemical analyses demonstrated that the synergistic effect of the NiCo(OH) x /Co y W heterogeneous interface resulted in favorable electron redistribution and faster electron transfer efficiency. The amorphous NiCo(OH) x strengthened the water dissociation step, and metal phase of CoW provided sufficient sites for moderate H immediate adsorption/H 2 desorption. In addition, NiCo(OH) x -Co y W exhibited desirable urea oxidation reaction activity for matching H 2 generation with a low voltage of 1.51 V at 50 mA cm −2 . More importantly, the synthesis and testing of the NiCo(OH) x -Co y W catalyst in this study were all solar-powered, suggesting a promising environmentally friendly process for practical applications.

Synergy of Interface Coupling and Sulfur Vacancies in Ni3S2/Fe2P for Water Splitting

Abstract:Integrated application of interface engineering and vacancy engineering is a promising and effective strategy for the design and fabrication of high-performance electrocatalysts. Herein, the heterointerface catalyst with rich sulfur vacancies, vs-Ni3S2/Fe2P, was successfully designed and constructed. The strong heterointerface coupling and rich sulfur vacancies in vs-Ni3S2/Fe2P significantly optimize the electronic structure of the catalyst and synergistically improve the inherent catalytic activity. Benefiting from the optimization of the electronic structure, vs-Ni3S2/Fe2P exhibits excellent bifunctional electrocatalytic performance in alkaline electrolytes. The overpotentials for hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions (HER and OER) are 99 and 169 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2, respectively. Particularly, it achieves an ultrahigh OER performance with an overpotential of 251 mV at 300 mA cm-2. Moreover, the catalyst also displays outstanding long-term durability. Density functional theory (DFT) computations reveal that the synergy of interface coupling and sulfur vacancies is crucial to optimizing the electronic structure. This study offers a hopeful pathway for the design and construction of durable and efficient electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Developing high-performance transition metal electrocatalysts is crucial for large-scale electrolysis of water to produce hydrogen. Ni3S2 is promising bifunctional water splitting electrocatalyst but has the problem of weak adsorption of water molecules and hydroxide ions. In order to develop it into a high-performance bifunctional electrocatalyst, in this work it was hybridized with MnFeOOH to optimize the chemical adsorption of oxygen- and hydrogen-containing intermediates. By altering the ratio of Mn and Fe, the electronic structure of the catalyst is adjusted. Through the implementation of these strategies, the water electrolysis performance of the composite catalyst has been effectively improved. It was revealed that when the Mn/Fe ratio was 2:1, its electrocatalytic oxygen evolution performance was optimal, and only overpotential of 268.4 or 339.4 mV was needed to realize a current density of 100 or 200 mA cm-2; When the Mn/Fe ratio was 1:3, the HER performance was the best, which only required 94.6 and 257.6 mV to afford current density of 10 and 50 mA cm-2, respectively; Chronoamperometric i-t testing shows that these electrocatalysts have excellent durability. Two-electrode overall water splitting device constructed with them can realize a current density of 10 mA cm-2 at only 1.6V. This work provides an insight for the development of high-performance bifunctional electrocatalysts.

Abstract:The highly effective and economical electrocatalysts hold great importance in the context of water electrolysis. In this work, a nanosheet catalyst (Ni3FeN/NF) composed of nanoparticles for comprehensive water splitting was synthesized through a facile hydrothermal technique followed by a subsequent nitridation process. This catalyst is endowed with an abundance of oxygen vacancies, thereby conferring a richer array of active sites. Therefore, the catalyst demonstrates a markedly low overpotential for the OER of 271 mV at 50 mA cm−2 and an equally low overpotential for the HER of 35 mV at 10 mA cm−2. Serving as a dual-function electrode, this electrocatalyst is employed in overall water splitting in alkaline environments, demonstrating impressive efficiency of 10 mA cm−2 at a cell voltage of 1.45 V. In-situ Raman spectroscopy was employed to elucidate the active phase and dynamic surface structure of the Ni3FeN/NF catalyst by conducting measurements at intervals of 0.1 V. At open circuit voltage (OCV), Ni3FeN/NF exhibited pronounced peaks at 532 and 702 cm−1. Notably, at potentials exceeding 1.40 V, distinct peaks were observed at 473 and 551 cm−1. The manifestation of these dual peaks indicates that γ-Ni(Fe)OOH serves as the predominant active species in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) mechanism for Ni3FeN/NF.

Abstract:Exploring efficient and low-cost multifunctional electrocatalysts is a prerequisite for the development of energy storage and converting technology. In this work, NiO/Co2P nanosheets (NiO/Co2P NSs) with heterogeneous structure were investigated through hydrothermal method, annealing, and phosphating processes. Considering the synergistic effect between NiO and Co2P, we demonstrated the excellent electrocatalytic properties of NiO/Co2P NSs for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). By optimizing the electronic structure of NiO and Co2P, as well as the high specific surface area of the nanosheet structure and the presence of a large number of mesopores, more active sites are exposed and the electrocatalytic efficiency is improved, thus providing excellent electrocatalytic performance. Specifically, NiO/Co2P NSs can reach 108 and 207 mV at the current density of 10 mA cm−2 in alkaline medium for HER and OER. And it requires a voltage of 1.57 V to reach a current density of 10 mA cm-2 for overall water splitting. In conclusion, this study demonstrates the critical contribution of heterogeneous structures to promote electrocatalytic properties and open new perspectives for designing multifunctional catalysts.

Abstract:Electrochemical water splitting provides a prominent route towards clean energy conversion and storage, while unsuitable catalysts restrict its application. Core–shell hierarchical heterostructure materials with strong synergistic effects based on non-noble metal elements have been developed to compensate for inadequacy. In this work, a core–shell hierarchical heterostructure Co9S8/Ni3S2@NiFe-LDH electrocatalyst was prepared via hydrothermal and electrodeposition methods. The resultant Co9S8/Ni3S2@NiFe-120 electrocatalyst consists of Co9S8 substrates as the core and NiFe-LDHs as the shell, and exhibits excellent overall water splitting electrocatalytic activity with a low overpotential of 229 mV for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and 151 mV for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and a full cell voltage of 1.62 V at 10 mA cm−2 current density. The core–shell heterostructure constructed by electrodeposition endows the catalyst with outstanding stability and low degradation in long-term catalytic processes as shown by continuous chronopotentiometry tests at current densities of 50, 100 and 200 mA cm−2 for 72 h. The as-prepared core–shell hierarchically heterostructural Co9S8/Ni3S2@NiFe-120 with high-efficiency and good-durability is a promising bifunctional electrocatalyst towards practical applications in overall water splitting.

Abstract:It remains challenging to develop economical and bifunctional electrocatalysts toward oxygen/hydrogen evolution reactions (OER/HER). Herein, we construct Co9S8 nanoflakes decorated Co3O4 nanoarrays with enriched heterogeneous interface zones on Ni foam (Co9S8@Co3O4/NF) via a novel step-wise approach. The Co9S8@Co3O4/NF hybrid manifests excellent performance with low overpotentials of 130 mV for HER (10 mA·cm−2) and 331 mV for OER (100 mA·cm−2), delivering a small voltage of 1.52 V for water splitting at 10 mA·cm−2 as well as outstanding catalytic durability, which surpasses precious metals and previously reported earth-abundant nanocatalysts. Further experimental and theoretical investigations demonstrate that the excellent performance is attributed to the followings: (i) Highly conductive Ni facilitates the efficient charge transfer; (ii) porous core-shell nanoarchitecture benefits the infiltration and transportation of gases/ions; (iii) heterogeneous interface zones synergistically lower the chemisorption energy of hydrogen/oxygen intermediates. This work will shed light on the controllable synthesis and engineering of heterostructure nanomaterials for clean energy storage and conversion technologies.
