Abstract:Electrochemical water splitting, a crucial reaction for renewable energy storage, demands highly efficient and stable catalysts. Defect and interface engineering has been widely acknowledged to play a pivotal role in improving electrocatalytic performance. Herein, we demonstrate a facile strategy to construct sulfur vacancy (Sv)-engineered Co3S4/MoS2-interfaced nanosheet arrays to modulate the interface electronic structure in situ reduction with NaBH4. The abundant sulfur vacancies and well-arranged nanosheet arrays in Sv-Co3S4/MoS2 lead to pronounced electrocatalytic properties for hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions (HER/OER) in an alkaline medium, with observed overpotentials of 156 and 209 mV at 10 mA cm-2, respectively. Additionally, as a bifunctional electrocatalyst, Sv-Co3S4/MoS2 requires a cell voltage of 1.67 V at 10 mA cm-2 for overall water splitting and exhibits long-term stability with activity sustained for more than 20 h. This study provides a novel approach to producing transition metal compound-interfaced electrocatalysts with rich vacancies under mild conditions, showcasing their potential for efficient water splitting applications.
Statistical evaluation of data from tractor guidance 1 systems 2

Abstract:5 Statistical tools are discussed for the analysis of data collected from tractor guid6 ance systems. The importance of both accuracy and precision is discussed, and sta7 tistical tools for analysis are considered which incorporate important features of the 8 data. In particular, accuracy is modelled using a generalized least squares model in9 corporating autocorrelation, and precision using a gamma generalized linear model. 10 The methods are applied to data collected during an experiment conducted with a 11 Trimble receiver used with a Beeline tractor guidance system. Three different sce12 narios are considered, then compared: a tractor simulating ploughing a field; the 13 tractor pulling a plough with the receivers on the tractor; the tractor pulling a plough 14 with the Trimble receiver on the plough. The change in the precision and accuracy 15 between the scenarios is discussed. Data was collected over repeated swaths for each 16 scenario. After discussing specific statistical techniques for analysis of this type of 17 data, the collected data are analysed; major conclusions are: the data collected from 18 the Trimble receiver showed evidence of autocorrelation in the offsets; the implement 19 recorded a variance about three times that recorded by the tractor. 20
Phosphorous Vacancy and Built-In Electric Field Effect of Co-Doped MoP@MXene Heterostructures to Tune Catalytic Activity for Efficient Overall Water Splitting

Abstract:Developing cost-effective, durable bifunctional electrocatalysts is crucial but remains challenging due to slow hydrogen/oxygen evolution reaction (HER/OER) kinetics in water electrolysis. Herein, a combined engineering strategy of phosphorous vacancy (Vp) and spontaneous built-in electric field (BIEF) is proposed to design novel highly-conductive Co-doped MoP@MXene heterostructures with phosphorous vacancy (Vp-Co-MoP@MXene). Wherein, Co doping regulates the surface electronic structure and charge re-distribution of MoP, Vp induces more defects and active sites, while BIEF accelerates the interfacial charge transfer rate between Vp-Co-MoP and MXene. Therefore, the synergistic integration of Vp-Co-MoP/MXene efficiently decreases activation energy and kinetic barrier, thus promoting its intrinsically catalytic activity and structural stability. Consequently, the Vp-Co-MoP@MXene catalyst displays low overpotentials of 102.3/196.5 and 265.0/320.0 mV at 10/50 mA cm-2 for HER and OER, respectively. Notably, two-electrode electrolyzers with the Vp-Co-MoP@MXene bifunctional catalysts to achieve 10/50 mA cm-2, only need low-cell voltages of 1.57/1.64 V in alkaline media. Besides, experimental and theoretical results confirm that the hetero-structure effectively reduces hydrogen adsorption free energy and rate-determining-step energy barrier of OER intermediates, thereby greatly boosting its intrinsically catalytic activity. This work verifies an effective strategy to fabricate efficient non-precious bifunctional electro-catalysts for water splitting via combination engineering of phosphorous vacancy, cation doping, and BIEF.
Metal-organic framework derived heterostructured phosphide bifunctional electrocatalyst for efficient overall water splitting

Abstract:Developing high active and stable cost-effective bifunctional electrocatalysts for overall water splitting to produce hydrogen is of vital significance in clean and sustainable energy development. This work has prepared a novel porous unreported MOF (Ni-DPT) as a precursor to successfully synthesize a non-noble bifunctional NiCoP/Ni12P5@NF electrocatalyst through doping strategy and interface engineering. This catalyst is constructed by layered self-supporting arrays with heterojunction interface and rich nitrogen-phosphorus doping. Structural characterizations and the density function theory (DFT) calculations confirm that the interface effect of NiCoP/Ni12P5 heterojunction can regulate the electronic structure of the catalyst to optimize the Gibbs free energy of hydrogen (ΔGH*); simultaneously, the defect-rich layered nanoarrays can expose more active sites, shorten mass transfer distance, and generate a self-supporting structure for in-situ reinforcing the structural stability. As a result, this NiCoP/Ni12P5@NF catalyst exhibits favorable electrocatalytic performance, which simply needs overpotentials of 100 mV for HER and 310 mV for OER, respectively, at a current density of 10 mA·cm-2. The anion exchange membrane electrolyzer assembled with this NiCoP/Ni12P5@NF as both anode and cathode catalysts can operate stably for 200 h at a current density of 100 mA·cm-2 with an insignificant voltage decrease. This work may provide some inspiration for the further rational design of inexpensive non-noble multifunctional electrocatalysts and electrode materials for water splitting to generate hydrogen.

Abstract:Designing high-efficiency catalysts for overall water splitting is critical to reduce the cost of hydrogen fuel as a clean and renewable energy source in future society. In this work, a Mo-, P-codoped NiFeSe was successfully synthesized on nickel foam (NF) by one-step electrodeposition . Through the doping strategy, the conductivity can be well promoted, and the production of nanosheets on the catalyst surface and active phases during hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) provided much more active sites, which leaded to efficient HER/OER performances of as-synthesized Mo-, P-codoped NiFeSe catalysts, i.e., a low overpotential of 100 mV/200 mV at current density of 10 mA cm −2 in 1.0 M KOH with stability of 95 h/60 h, respectively. It only required 1.53 V to deliver a current density of 10 mA cm −2 in overall water splitting and maintained outstanding durability for 100 h. This work is beneficial to future design of high efficient and low-cost bifunctional catalysts for overall water splitting.

Abstract:Transition metal phosphides (TMPs) exhibit excellent competitiveness for electrochemical splitting water due to their high electrical conductivity and remarkable physicochemical stability. However, pure single-phase TMPs still possess some disadvantages, such as the limited number of active sites and difficulty in greatly accelerating mass/charge transfer. Elemental doping is a practical way to manipulate the intrinsic electronic structures of TMPs and optimize the adsorption and desorption process of intermediates during the water splitting reaction. Rational construction of heterostructure electrocatalysts with high catalytic activity and excellent durability shows great potential for both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, we developed a nickel foam (NF)-supported NixCoyP/Co2P heterostructure anchoring on N-doped carbon (NixCoyP/Co2P@NF) via the phosphating of the organic frameworks (ZIF-67) with Mo species added. The as-synthesized NixCoyP/Co2P@NF catalyst shows a unique three-dimensional (3D) nano-network morphology with a large specific surface area and abundant channels for mass exchange. Mo doping alters the valence electronic states of the constituent elements in the initial phase (NixCoyP), thus optimizing the proton transfer from P sites to metal sites, while Co species in the secondary phase (Co2P) is conducive to the water decomposition. Moreover, the heterogeneous interface between initial and secondary phases accelerates electron conduction and further enhances the electrocatalytic efficiency. The NixCoyP/Co2P@NF catalyst shows overpotentials of 170 mV for HER and 352 mV for OER at a current density of 100 mA cm−2 in 1.0 M KOH. The current density can reach 100 mA cm−2 by applying a voltage of 1.75 V for overall water splitting in an alkaline water electrolyzer with NixCoyP/Co2P@NF acting as the anodic and cathodic electrodes. This work has achieved a heterostructure catalyst via the heteroatom-dopant induced phase transition and offered an interfacial engineering strategy for further improving the activity of bifunctional TMP catalysts.

Abstract:The achievement of outstanding catalytic activity in water electrolysis is contingent upon the presence of abundant active sites with enhanced kinetics in electrocatalysts. This study focuses on enhancing the catalytic activity of water electrolysis under alkaline conditions by designing P-doped NiMo oxide/Ni-Fe hydroxide composite on Ni foam through a straightforward hydrothermal process. The composite is further annealed with NaH 2 PO 4 and subjected to induced growth via in situ precipitation in an oxalic acid solution containing Fe precursors. The resulting bifunctional catalysts exhibit notable catalytic performance, manifesting overpotentials of 20.5 mV and 69.4 mV for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and 225.9 mV and 271.8 mV for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) to drive 10 and 100 mA cm -2 , respectively. The improved kinetics, attributed to P doping, play a pivotal role in reducing the overpotential of HER. Meanwhile, the homogeneous mixing of Ni and Fe, coupled with the large active surface area, enhances the catalytic performance of OER. The investigation of Mo precursors reveals their significant contribution to structurally shaping the catalysts, thereby influencing excellent OER performance. Collectively, these factors enable overall water electrolysis with low potentials of 1.82 V at 100 mA cm -2 , underscoring the efficacy of the developed bifunctional catalysts.

Phosphorus-doped MoS2 with sulfur vacancy defects for enhanced electrochemical water splitting

Abstract:MoS2 is a promising electrocatalyst because of its natural abundance and outstanding electrochemical stability. However, the poor conductivity and low activity limit its catalytic performance; furthermore, MoS2 is unable to satisfy the requirements of most industrial applications. In this study, to obtain a P-doped MoS2 catalyst with S vacancy defects, P is inserted into the MoS2 matrix via a solid phase ion exchange at room temperature. The optimal P-doping amount is 11.4 wt%, and the resultant catalyst delivers excellent electrocatalytic properties for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with the corresponding overpotentials of 93 and 316 mV at 10 mA cm−2 in an alkaline solution; these values surpass the overpotentials of most previously reported MoS2-based materials. Theoretical calculations and results demonstrate that the synergistic effect of the doped P, which forms active centers in the basal plane of MoS2, and S vacancy defects caused by P doping intensifies the intrinsic electronic conductivity and electrocatalytic activity of the catalyst. Density functional theory calculations demonstrate that P optimizes the free energy of the MoS2 matrix for hydrogen adsorption, thereby considerably increasing the intrinsic activity of the doped catalyst for the HER compared with that observed from pristine MoS2. The enhanced catalytic activity of P-doped MoS2 for the OER is attributed to the ability of the doped P which facilitates the adsorption of hydroxyl and hydroperoxy intermediates and reduces the reaction energy barrier. This study provides a new environmentally friendly and convenient solid-phase ion exchange method to improve the electrocatalytic capability of two-dimensional transition-metal dichalcogenides in large-scale applications.

Abstract:Developing cost-effective, efficient and bifunctional electrocatalysts is vital for both hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) application. The catalytic activity of electrocatalysts could be optimized by reasonable electronic structure regulation and increasing active sites. Herein, we report the design and fabrication of Mo-doped nickel sulfide/hydroxide heterostructures (Mo-NiS/Ni(OH)2) as a multisite water splitting catalyst via straightforward solvothermal and in-situ growth strategy. Based on foreign metal doping and interface interaction, the electronic conductivity of heterostructures is improved and the charge transfer kinetics across the interface is promoted, which are demonstrated by the theoretical calculations. Mo-NiS/Ni(OH)2 electrocatalyst is endowed with high electrocatalytic performance for water splitting and remarkable durability in alkaline electrolyte. It exhibits the low overpotential of 186 and 74 mV at 10 mA·cm−2 for OER and HER, respectively. Importantly, after continuously working for 50 h, the current densities of HER and OER both show negligible degeneration. Even, the resulting Mo-NiS/Ni(OH)2 better catalyzes water splitting, yielding a current density of 10 mA·cm−2 at a cell voltage of 1.5 V and outperforming Pt/C-IrO2 couple (1.53 V). This result demonstrates that transition metal doping and heterogeneous interface engineering are useful means for conventional catalyst design.

Fe-Doped Ni–Co Phosphide Nanoplates with Planar Defects as an Efficient Bifunctional Electrocatalyst for Overall Water Splitting

Abstract:Highly efficient and low-cost bifunctional electrocatalysts in the same medium are indispensable for overall water splitting. Herein, Fe-doped Ni–Co phosphide nanoplates with a hierarchical nanostructure were successfully fabricated on a carbon cloth (Fex-NiCoP) via a facile method with electrodesposition and PH3 plasma treatment. Benefiting from the hierarchical structure, two-dimensional nanoplates comprising fine nanocrystals and doping effects of Fe, the Fex-NiCoP demonstrates excellent electrocatalytic performance for both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), which is sensitive to the Fe content. By controlling the Fe content, Fe1-NiCoP achieves 10 mA cm–2 at a low overpotential of 60 mV for the HER, while Fe2-NiCoP with a higher Fe doping content drives 50 mA cm–2 at only 293 mV for the OER. Upon high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, some planar defects were observed in the Fe-doped NiCoP nanocrystals, which may account for the increased exposure of active sites. When the optimal Fex-NiCoP electrodes were employed as the anode and cathode for water electrolysis in the alkaline electrolyte, the electrolyzer achieves 10 mA cm–2 at a low cell voltage of 1.61 V. Our work might shed light on rational design of the efficient multimetallic phosphide bifunctional electrocatalysts for overall water splitting.

Synergistically enhancing electrocatalytic activity of Co2P by Cr doping and P vacancies for overall water splitting

Abstract:Designing high-performance and earth-abundant bifunctional catalysts for electrocatalytic water splitting remains a great challenge. Herein, a novel electrode composed of Cr-doped Co2P with P vacancies nanowire arrays (denoted as CrCo2P(Vp) NWs) grown on nickel foam was fabricated via a hydrothermal and successive calcination method. The Cr doping and vacancy engineering synergistically enable the exposure of more active sites, optimize electronic structure, and accelerate the charge transport capability, thus enhancing the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performances. As a result, the obtained Cr0.4Co2P(Vp) NWs catalyst exhibits superior catalytic activities in 1.0 M KOH solution with low overpotentials of 37 mV at −10 mA cm−2 for HER and 253 mV at 20 mA cm−2 for OER, respectively. Furthermore, using Cr0.4Co2P(Vp) NWs as a dual-function catalyst only requires 1.54 V voltage at 10 mA cm−2 for overall water splitting. Notably, the Cr0.4Co2P(Vp) NWs catalyst displays satisfactory stability with only a small attenuation of 3.2% after 50 h in a constant current testing. This study highlights the synergistic effect between doping and anion-vacancies in the enhancement of electrocatalytic activities and provides a feasible strategy to design effective, earth-abundant, and stable bifunctional electrocatalysts for water splitting.

Abstract:Bimetallic oxides have unique advantages in driving both oxygen and hydrogen evolution reactions (OER/HER). Surface engineering of bimetallic oxides is a promising way to boost the catalytic activity by the regulation of electronic structure and surface property. Herein, a dual P, S-anions modification strategy is developed to optimize the catalytic performance of CoMoO4 nanowire arrays. The formations of CoP and Co3S4 species on the CoMoO4 surface bring heterojunction interfaces for more catalytic active sites and strong electronic interaction for faster interfacial charge transfer. Benefiting from these advantages, the P, S-CoMoO4 catalyst on nickel foam (NF) delivers excellent catalytic activity and stability. The overpotentials at 10 mA cm−2 of P, S-CoMoO4/NF for HER are just 31 mV in acid media and 58 mV in alkaline media, respectively. In addition, by assembling the P, S-CoMoO4/NF as bifunctional electrodes for overall water splitting, the electrolyzer exhibits a voltage of as low as 1.66 V at a current density of 50 mA cm−2. This work put forward a new avenue for the development of advanced bifunctional electrocatalysts for water splitting.

Abstract:At present, it is still a critical challenge to simultaneously facilitate the overall water splitting reaction by an electrocatalyst with high activity, good durability, and low cost. Herein, ultrathin nanosheets Co-Mo-Ni heterostructured phosphide bifunctional electrocatalysts were constructed on Cu(OH)2 nanorod arrays toward an efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The electrocatalysts are rationally designed to be composed of heterostructure CoMoP, MoNiP, and Cu3P. The formation of M−P bonds can capture intermediates, avoid deactivation, and induce ligand effects to enhance catalytic performance. Therefore, the synergistic effect of heterogeneous structure and phosphorylation is the main contribution to promoting HER and OER. As a result, the bifunctional electrocatalysts exhibit highly efficient with HER overpotentials of 106 mV and 160 mV at current densities of 100 and 200 mA cm−2, and OER overpotentials of 243 mV and 280 mV, respectively. The constructed overall water-splitting cell realized a low potential of 1.65 V with a current density of 100 mA cm−2 and long-term stability, which is comparable to the reported bifunctional catalysts.

Abstract:Defect-rich metal-based nanomeshes have been regarded as potential effective catalysts for electrocatalytic water splitting, in which nanopores are beneficial to increase active sites and enhance the mass transfer. However, facile synthesis of metal-based nanomeshes still remains a great challenge. Herein, we report the cost-efficient ultrathin nickel molybdenum nanomeshes (NiMoO4) for overall water splitting. The NiMoO4 possesses outstanding oxygen evolution reaction property (239 mA cm−2), together with an exceptional cycling stability. Notably, phosphorus (P)-doping endows the NiMoO4 nanomeshes a superior hydrogen evolution reaction property (144 −10 mA cm−2). We also prepare a double electrode system with NiMoO4 and P-doped NiMoO4, and evaluate the performance of overall water splitting (1.68 V @10 mA cm−2). The key point of the processing route developed here is the synergistic effect between defect engineering and element doping, which provide a guiding insight for the development of novel catalysts for their practical applications.

Herein, we synthesized the nickel-molybdenum nanorod array catalyst supported on NF (NMO@NM/MO) by a two-step process of hydrothermal and reductive annealing. Partial reduction of the NiMoO4 induces the structural reconstruction and formation of the Ni4Mo/MoO2 heterostructure on oxygen vacancy enriched nanorod, which bring out sufficient active sites, large specific surface area and favorable interfacial charge transfer. Thanks to the unique core-shell structure with the heterostructured Ni4Mo/MoO2 surface and defect-rich NiMoO4 core, the obtained electrocatalyst shows greatly improved hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity with an ultralow overpotential of 63 mV at 100 mA cm-2 (vs. 314 mV for the NiMoO4). Density function theory calculations reveal that the construction of the Ni4Mo/MoO2 heterostructure effectively accelerates H2O dissociation kinetics, while the defective NiMoO4 facilitates H* adsorption/desorption. Moreover, the heterostructure catalyst also displays excellent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance with the low overpotential of 274 mV at 100 mA cm-2. When coupling HER and OER by using NMO@NM/MO as both the cathode and anode, the alkaline electrolyzer delivers a current density of 10 mA cm-2 at only 1.50 V as well as good robustness. The synergistic effect of the hetero-interface and the defect engineering endows the electrocatalyst with excellent bifunctional catalytic activity for HER and OER. This work may provide a route for rational design of heterostructure electrocatalysts with multiple active components.

Abstract:Transition metal phosphides (TMPs) are one of the most promising alternatives to noble metal electrocatalysts, but so far their activity and stability still fall short of expectations. Here, we prepare nitrogen-doped nickel-cobalt phosphide (N-NiCoP) and molybdenum phosphide (MoP) heterostructures engineered on nickel foam (NF) with nanosheet structure by high-temperature annealing and low-temperature phosphorylation. Notably, heteroatomic N doping and heterostructures construction are achieved together through a simple co-pyrolysis method. The distinctive composition can synergistically promote the electron transfer, lower the reaction barriers, thus improve the catalytic performance. Therefore, the modified requires low overpotentials of 43 mV and 232 mV to reach 10 mA cm -2 current density for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) accompanied by satisfactory stability in 1 M KOH. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the electron coupling and synergistic interfacial effects at the heterogeneous interface. This study provides a new strategy for heterogeneous electrocatalysts with elemental doping to promote hydrogen applications.

High-performance bifunctional Fe-doped molybdenum oxide-based electrocatalysts with in situ grown epitaxial heterojunctions for overall water splitting

Abstract:The design and development of low-cost, abundant reserves, high catalytic activity and durability bifunctional electrocatalysts for water splitting are of great significance. Here, simple hydrothermal and hydrogen reduction methods were used to fabricate a uniform distribution of Fe-doped MoO2/MoO3 sheets with abundant oxygen vacancies and heterojunctions on etched nickel foam (ENF). The Fe– MoO2/MoO3/ENF exhibited a small overpotential of 36 mV at 10 mA cm−2 for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), an excellent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) overpotential of 310 mV at 100 mA cm−2 and outstanding stabilities of 95 h and 120 h for the HER and OER, respectively. As both cathode and anode catalysts, the heterogeneously structured Fe– MoO2/MoO3/ENF required a low cell voltage of 1.57 V at 10 mA cm−2. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that Fe doping and MoO2/MoO3 heterojunctions can significantly reduce the band gap of the electrode, accelerate electron transport and reduce the potential barrier for water splitting. This work provides a new approach for designing metal ion doping and heterostructure formation that may be adapted to transition metal oxides for water splitting.

Abstract:Finding efficient, stable, and inexpensive electrocatalysts is the key for water-splitting for developing hydrogen energy technology. The abundant MoS2 has hydrogen evolution activity comparable to that of Pt and is regarded as an efficient alternative for noble-metal-based electrocatalysts; however, it cannot be widely used due to the limitation of less exposed active sites. Herein, we propose a metal–organic framework (MOF)-etching and vulcanization strategy to design CoS2@NiS-MoS2 ternary composite heterostructures on Ti foil. The MOF-derived open framework structure is conducive to electrolyte entry and bubble diffusion, and a large number of nanosheet edges are exposed to greatly increase the number of active sites. Moreover, the heterojunction heterogeneous interface formed by CoS2, NiS, and MoS2 adjusts the local charge distribution and reduces the kinetic barrier during water splitting. In 1 mol/L KOH, the electrocatalyst required only 91 mV overpotential to deliver a current density of 10 mA cm–2 and had a Tafel slope of 53 mV dec–1 and good electrochemical stability. This work highlights the importance of control strategies for surface engineering at multiple scales, which can be used for the exploration of efficient and robust electrocatalysts for large-scale alkaline electrolyzers.
