Abstract:Trace metals are a group of toxic pollutants that can cause serious damage to ecosystems and humans. To determine the distribution characteristics of aqueous trace metal contamination and identify critical pollution sources, it is necessary to develop a detailed estimation of trace metal emissions. By considering emission-related factors in each industrial sector, we estimate that the emissions were approximately 2, 61 t, 2,684 t, 301 t and 309 t for mercury, cadmium, chromium, arsenic and lead, respectively, in 2010 in China. These values are much higher than those provided in annual statistical reports. Our research identified critical emissions sources, including Shandong, Henan, Jiangsu and Guangdong Provinces and Raw Chemical, Non-ferrous Smelting, Non-ferrous Mining and Metal Products industries. However, Shandong and Metal Products are ignored in ‘The Twelfth 5-Year Plan for Complete Control of Trace Metal Pollution’. This research generally found that the allowable discharge levels had a significant impact on specific sectors. Total emissions are much lower than the maximum allowable under current Chinese emissions regulations but exceed limits recommended by Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (European Union). Furthermore, our study found that many regions located along upstream reaches of the Yangtze River, like Sichuan Province, are sources of cross-boundary pollution.

Abstract:Textile wastewater is intractable industrial wastewater because of its big quantity and high concentration of complicated constituents. The research object was the wastewater from each unit of a sewage treatment plant in Zhejiang province, and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was used to determine the degradation process of organic pollutants in treatment processes. The results show that wastewater samples from the primary settling tank, the secondary sedimentation tank and the final settling tank respectively contained 50, 40 and 30 kinds of organic matters, including chloroform, 1, 2-dichloroethane, 1, 1, 2-trichloroethane and other eight kinds of organic matters which belong to environmental priority control contaminants.Acetophenone, chloroform, 2-chloro-2-methyl butane and other five kinds of organic matters are chosen as the characteristic pollutants in textile wastewater. The research has important significance on the treatment and reuse of textile wastewater.

Abstract:China has the largest textile production and export in the world, with a massive amount of wastewater and related pollutants releasing. With an increasing concern to improve water quality, dyeing and finishing wastewater (DFW) requires better disposal or reclamation. In this review, the characteristics of wastewater in different natural and synthetic fiber production processes as well as the origins of their specific pollutants such as aniline, absorbable organic halogens (AOX), sulfide, hexavalent chromium and antimony were summarized. The discharge standards for DFW in China, have undergone complex evolution processes, which were discussed including the current standard, the revision detail and the one to be implemented. Furthermore, the current status of pollutant reduction in the textile industry, covering cleaner production and wastewater treatment, was targeted, in particular the state of the art of specific pollutant removal technologies and their feasibility of application for DFW treatment. Also, reclamation systems based on wastewater discharge characteristics and reclaimed water quality requirements were reviewed. Overall, the systematic solution of source reduction of wastewater and contaminants, coupled with subsequent treatment and recycling, is crucial for the sustainable development of the textile industry.

Abstract:Nano-carrier systems have become an attractive alternative in the formulation of hydrophobic drugs, and the number of scientific and patent publications per year on nanoparticles has experienced exponential growth since 2000. As these drugs are carried by different nano-carriers, their pharmacokinetics (PK) and biodistribution will be greatly affected. Therefore, PK and biodistribution have become important parameters to evaluate the nano-systems, which are commonly performed by HPLC. This study looks at certain issues in extraction and HPLC analysis encountered in conducting biodistribution studies for paclitaxel (PTX) nanocrystals. We report here for the first time that the extraction efficiency of PTX depends on the nano-carriers, i.e., nanocrystals and nanomicelles. A selected solvent had to be added prior to extraction to totally destruct the nano-carrier structure to resolve this difference. It was also found that the extraction recovery of PTX carried by the nanocrystals was organ specific. Therefore, it will be critical to consider this difference when studying the distribution of drugs in nano-carriers. We hope that our findings would highlight certain issues to be aware of when conducting PK and biodistribution studies for nano-drug carriers.

Abstract:An analytical strategy for comprehensive screening of target and non-target volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in surface water was developed, and it was applied to the analysis of VOCs in water samples from Daliao River. The target VOCs were quantified using purge and trap-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (P&T-GC/MS). Among 20 water samples, 34 VOCs were detected at least once. For the screening of non-target VOCs, the double distillation apparatus was used for the pre-concentration of VOCs prior to P&T-GC/MS analysis. Subsequently, deconvolution software and NIST mass spectral library were applied for the identification of the non-target compounds. A total of 17 non-target VOCs were identified. The most frequently detected VOCs (detection frequencies >80 %) included toluene, benzene, naphthalene, 1,2-dichloroethane, 1,1,2-trichloroethane, and methyl tert -butyl ether. The distribution of VOCs obviously varied according to the sampling sites. The total concentrations of VOCs in water samples collected from the heavily industrialized cities (Anshan and Liaoyang) and the busy port city (Yingkou) were relatively high. The top ten priority VOCs, including naphthalene, 1,2-dichloroethane, o -xylene, 1,3-dichlorobenzene, tetrachloroethene, 1,2-dichlorobenzene, 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene, ethylbenzene, m -xylene, and p -xylene, were obtained by the ranking of the detected VOCs according to their occurrence and ecological effects. These compounds should be given more attention in monitoring and drainage control strategies.

Abstract:Organic compounds and calcium ion concentrations in regenerated papermaking wastewater were analyzed by HPLC,GC-MS,AAS and other methods.Based on the above results,some particular pollutants were chosen,and their migration and transformation characteristics in wastewater treatment process were investigated.Results showed that regenerated papermaking wastewater contained a considerable amount of pollutants,and DEP,DIBP,BHT,lignin and Ca~(2+) were chosen as particular pollutants for their refractory biodegradation and negative effect.Total COD_(Cr) percent of DEP,DIBP,BHT,and lignin in effluents increased gradually from 7.1% (primary clarifier) to 33.6% (secondary clarifier).A portion of DIBP,BHT and Ca~(2+) could be removed mainly through anaerobic IC process,and A/O unit played an important role in the removal of DEP and lignin.It was easy for Ca~(2+) to accumulate in the effluents because of the high reusing rate of wastewater,which could result in granular sludge escaping from the IC reactor and affecting the whole wastewater treatment system.

Abstract:<p>Owing to the production and use of chemicals in chemical industry parks (CIPs), these areas are considered to be highly polluted. However, the type of pollutants presents in the wastewater from CIPs and the risk posed to the environment due to the release of these pollutants remains unclear. In this study, suspect screening was combined with traceability analysis to determine the type of pollutants present in wastewaters at 9 chemical enterprises and wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in the CIPs. Additionally, the distribution of nine pollutants from the WWTPs' effluent stage and the risk they posed to the surrounding river was examined through target analysis. Upon conducting suspect analysis, the presence of 65 and 64 chemicals in the 9 chemical enterprises' wastewaters and WWTPs, respectively, was tentatively identified. Traceability analysis of the compounds screened in the effluent from the WWTPs determined that 41 substances were identified as characteristic pollutants of the chemical enterprises, indicating that the suspect screening strategy enabled relatively more efficient identification of the characteristic pollutants compared to traditional quantitative analysis. Targeting analysis combined with ecological risk assessment showed that metolachlor, carbendazim, atrazine, diuron, and chlorpyrifos posed relatively higher risks to aquatic organisms in the surrounding river. Therefore, the refined management of the wastewater treatment plant in the CIPs is necessary.</p>

Abstract:To evaluate impact of printing-dyeing wastewater on aquatic ecological systems,an experiment was carried out using Scenedesmus obliquus,Daphnia magna and Hemibarbus maculates as subjects for test of toxicity of printing-dyeing wastewater.In the experiment the wastewater was diluted with 7346-2 standard diluent into solutions different in concentration,i.e 100.00%,50.00%,25.00%,12.50%,and 6.25%.Results show that the wastewater was somewhat toxic to all the three kinds of aquatic organisms in the aquatic ecosystem regardless of its nutrient level.The 24 and 48 h-EC50(effective concentration for reduction of growth by 50%) of the wastewater was(51.55±4.12)% and(20.40±6.27)%,respectively,to S.obliquus,and(78.20±4.31)% and(53.10±1.88)%,respectively,to D.magna.The 96h-LC50 of the wastewater to cleavage stage,blastula stage,gastrula stage,lava,and 25-day fingerlings of H.maculates was(19.89±1.68)%,(25.95±2.14)%,(27.24±0.88)%,(19.61±2.21)%,and(49.27±3.27)%,respectively.The safe concentration of the wastewater to aquatic organisms was 1.96%.So,discharge of such wastewater should be strictly controlled in practice.

Effect driven prioritization of contaminants in wastewater treatment plants across China: A data mining-based toxicity screening approach

Abstract:A diversity of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) are present in wastewater effluent, posing potential threats to receiving waters. It is urgent for a holistic assessment of the occurrence and risk of CECs related to wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) on national and regional scales. A data mining-based risk prioritization method was developed to collect the reported contaminants and their respective concentrations in municipal and industrial WWTPs and their receiving waters across China over the past 20 years. A total of 10,781 chemicals were reported in 8336 publications, of which 1037 contaminants were reported with environmental concentrations. While contaminant categories varied across WWTP types (municipal vs. industrial) and regions, pharmaceuticals and cyclic hydrocarbons were the most studied CECs. Contaminant composition in receiving water was closer to that in municipal than industrial WWTPs. Publications on legacy pesticides and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in WWTP decreased recently compared to the past, while pharmaceuticals and perfluorochemicals have received increasing attention, showing a changing concern over time. Detection frequency, concentration, removal efficiency, and toxicity data were integrated for assessing potential risks and prioritizing CECs on national and regional scales using an environmental health prioritization index (EHPi) approach. Among 666 contaminants in municipal WWTP effluent, trichlorfon and perfluorooctanesulfonic acid were with the highest EHPi scores, while 17ɑ-ethinylestradiol and bisphenol A had the highest EHPi scores among 304 contaminants in industrial WWTPs. The prioritized contaminants varied across regions, suggesting a need for tailoring regional measures of wastewater treatment and control.

Abstract:Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are the main sources of emerging contaminants (ECs) in aquatic environment. However, the standards for limiting emerging pollutants in effluent are extremely lacking. We investigated the occurrence and removal of emerging pollutants in 16 WWTPs in China using non-target analysis. 568 substances screened out were divided into 9 kinds including 167 pharmaceuticals, 113 natural substances, 85 pesticides, 86 endogenous substances, 64 chemical raw materials, 14 personal care products, 17 food additives, 6 hormones and 16 others. And they were divided into 5 fates. Pesticides and pharmaceutical compounds seemed to be the most notable categories, the kinds detected in each sample is the largest compared with other compounds. Besides, the average removal rate of pesticides and pharmaceuticals in all WWTPs were the lowest, at 9.54% and 23.77%, respectively. Priority pollutants were screened by considering distribution of pollutants with different fates. Pollutants with the same fate especially "consistent" in different WWTPs had attracted attention. 4 potential priority pollutants including metoprolol, carbamazepine, 10, 11-dihydro-10, 11-dihydroxycarbamazepine and irbesartan were proposed. And it was found that the 4 compounds, "consistent suspects" and "consistent non-targets" had similar rankings of removal rate in 16 WWTPs, which can reflect the performance of different WWTPs.

Abstract:In recent years, increasing attention has been paid to the trace-level contamination of pharmaceuticals in the water environment all over the world. Considering a large number of pharmaceuticals used, it is crucial to establish a priority list of pharmaceuticals that should be monitored and/or treated first. In the present study, we developed a ranking system based on the pharmaceutical consumption, removal performance in the wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and potential ecological effects, and applied to the situation of China. 39 pharmaceuticals, which had available consumption data and also been reported previously in the WWTPs of China, were selected as candidate pharmaceuticals. Among them, seventeen pharmaceuticals were considered as priority pharmaceuticals, out of which, erythromycin, diclofenac acid and ibuprofen, had the high priority. Compared with other literatures, we found that some pharmaceuticals given concerns to globally should also be included in the priority list in China; while some pharmaceuticals, not mentioned in other literatures, such as cefalexin, ketoconazole, should be also given prior consideration in China. Among all the therapeutic classes, antibiotics, which were grossly abused in China, contributed the most to the priority pharmaceuticals. However, priority antibiotics accounted for only 32% of candidate antibiotics, while 71% and 100% of the candidate anti-inflammatory and antilipidemic respectively were identified as the priority pharmaceuticals, indicating that antibiotics might be overanxiously considered in the previous studies on their behaviors in the WWTPs of China.

Abstract:Concentrations,pollution sources and distribution characteristics of heavy metals(Cr,Zn,Cu,Ni,Pb,Cd,Fe,Mn) were investigated in the influent,effluent and activated sludge of a tannery and textile dyeing industrial park wastewater treatment plant in Zhejiang,based on which the influence of heavy metals on the pollutant removal performance was discussed.Results showed that the highest contents of heavy metals in the influent were Cr and Fe,respectively reaching 16.40 mg/L and 15.80 mg/L.These heavy metals accumulated in the activated sludge,with Cr and Fe as high as 12550 mg/kg-dried sludge and 13671 mg/kg-dried sludge.The enrichment of heavy metals in the activated sludge not only brought difficulties in the sludge disposal and resource utilization,but also gave negative impact on the solid-liquid separation of sludge and the pollutants removal performance.

The Science of The Total Environment

Abstract:Recently, numerous organic pollutants have been detected in water environment. The safety of our drinking water has attracted widespread attention. Effective methods to screen and identify high-concern substances are urgently needed. In this study, the combined workflow for the detection and identification of high-concern organic chemicals was established and applied to tap water samples from the Yangtze River Basin. The solid phase extraction (SPE) sorbents were compared and evaluated and finally the HLB cartridge was selected as the best one for most of the contaminants. Based on target, suspect and non-target analysis, 3023 chemicals/peaks were detected. Thirteen substances such as diundecyl phthalate (DUP), 2-hydroxyatrazine, dioxoaminopyrine and diethyl-2-phenylacetamide were detected in drinking water in the Yangtze River Basin for the very first time. Based on three kinds of prioritization principles, 49 ubiquitous, 103 characteristic chemicals and 13 inefficiently removed chemicals were selected as high-concern substances. Among them, 8, 31, 9, 3, 4 substances overlapped with the toxic, risky or high-concern chemicals lists in China, America, European Union, Japan, Korea, respectively. Specific management and removal strategies were further recommended. The workflow is efficient for identification of key pollutants.
