Abstract:Plastic contamination in the Southern Ocean is a growing issue. This study provides the first comprehensive analysis of marine microplastics (MPs) (0.1–5 mm) in surface sediments in Potter Cove and nearby areas around Argentina's Carlini station (25 de Mayo/King George Island, South Shetlands). Sediment samples from 31 sites (2020−2022) were collected to examine whether MP pollution originates from station activities or ocean currents. All samples contained MPs, averaging 0.18 ± 0.12 MPs/g of sediment, mainly microfibers (MFs) and irregular microfragments (MFRs) (0.11–6.23 mm) and irregular microfragments (MFRs) (0.09–4.57 mm). Infrared spectroscopy identified 13 polymer types, including cellulosic materials, polyester, and polyamide, with most MPs < 1 mm, showing aging signs, similar to laundry wear. This widespread distribution suggests contamination may stem from both local activities and external sources. Findings underscore the urgent need for MP pollution management and further research to identify sources and develop effective mitigation strategies.

Abstract:Global microplastic pollution has garnered widespread attention from researchers both domestically and internationally. However, compared to other regions worldwide, little is known about microplastic pollution in the marine ecosystems of the Antarctic region. This study investigated the abundance and characteristics of microplastics (MPs) in the gills and intestines of 15 species of Antarctic fish and Antarctic krill ( Euphausia superba ). The results indicate that the abundance of MPs in Antarctic fish and E. superba ranged from 0.625 to 2.0 items/individual and 0.17 to 0.27 items/individual, with mean abundances of 0.93 ± 0.96 items/individual and 0.23 ± 0.44 items/individual, respectively. Antarctic fish ingested significantly more MPs than E. superba . There was no significant difference in the abundance of MPs between the gills and intestines of Antarctic fish. However, the quantity of pellet-shaped MPs in the gills was significantly higher than in the intestines. The depth of fish habitat influenced the quantity and size of MPs in their bodies, with benthic fish ingesting significantly fewer MPs than pelagic fish. Pelagic fish ingested significantly more MPs sized 1–5 mm than benthic fish. Additionally, analysis of the characteristics of MPs revealed that fiber-shaped MPs were predominant in shape, with sizes generally smaller than 0.25 mm and 0.25–0.5 mm. The predominant colors of MPs were transparent, red, and black, while the main materials were polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS), polyamide (PA), and polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Compared to organisms from other regions, the levels of MPs in Antarctic fish and E. superba were relatively low. This study contributes to a better understanding of the extent of MP pollution in Antarctic fish and E. superba , aiding human efforts to mitigate its impact on the environment.

Abstract:Plastic pollution in the Southern Ocean around Antarctica is a growing concern, but many areas in this vast region remain unexplored. This study provides the first comprehensive analysis of marine microplastic (MPs) concentrations in Potter Cove, located near the Argentinian Carlini research station on 25 de Mayo/King George Island, Antarctica. Water samples were collected at 14 sites within the cove, representing various influences from the station's activities. Two sampling methods were used: a 5 L Niskin bottle and an in-situ filtering device called Microfilter, allowing for large water volumes to be filtered. MPs were found in 100 % of the samples. Microfilter samples ranged from 0.02 to 2.14 MPs/L, with a mean concentration of 0.44 ± 0.44 MPs/L. Niskin bottle samples showed concentrations from 0.40 to 55.67 MPs/L, with a mean concentration of 19.03 ± 18.21 MPs/L. The dominant types of MPs were anthropogenic black, transparent, and pink microfibers (MFs) measuring between 0.11 and 3.6 mm (Microfilter) and 0.06 to 7.96 mm (Niskin bottle), with a median length of 0.01 mm for both methods. Transparent and black irregular microfragments (MFRs) with diameters from 0.10 to 5.08 mm and a median diameter of 0.49 mm were also prevalent. FTIR-spectroscopy revealed the presence of 14 types of polymers. Cellulose-based materials and polyethylene terephthalate were the most abundant in MFs, while polyurethanes and styrene-based copolymers dominated in MFRs. MPs were more abundant near the Carlini station. Compared to other coastal Antarctic areas, the MPs in the cove were relatively abundant and mostly smaller than 1 mm. Local activities on the island were identified as the primary source of MPs in the cove, and the cyclonic water circulation likely affects the distribution of small-sized particles. To protect the ecosystem, reducing plastic usage, improving waste management, regulating MPs debris, and enhancing wastewater practices are essential.

Abstract:The prevalence of microplastics (MPs, <5 mm) in natural environments presents a formidable global environmental threat MPs can be found from the Arctic to Antarctica, including glaciers. Despite their widespread distribution, studies on MP accumulation in apex predators inhabiting Polar Regions remain limited. The objective of this study was to conduct a comprehensive examination, for the first time, of MP bioaccumulation in various organs and tissue of Adélie penguins. This investigation comprehends the gastrointestinal tract (GIT), scat, internal organ (lung, trachea, spleen, and liver) and tissue (muscle) samples collected from Svenner Island, Antarctica during the 39th Indian expedition to Antarctica in 2019-2020. Our analyses revealed the presence of 34 MPs across the GIT, scat, lung, and trachea samples, with no MPs detected in muscle, spleen, or liver tissues. Blue-colored microfibers (>50 %) and MPs smaller than 1 mm (38 %) in size were prominently observed. Polymer characterization utilizing μ-FTIR spectroscopy identified low-density polyethylene (LDPE) (~63 %) as the predominant polymer type. The accumulation of MP fibers in the gastrointestinal tract and scat of Adélie penguins may originate from marine ambient media and prey organisms. Furthermore, the presence of LDPE fibers in the trachea and lungs likely occurred through inhalation and subsequent deposition of MPs originating from both local and long-range airborne sources. The identification of fibers ranging between 20 and 100 μm within the trachea suggests a plausible chance of cellular deposition of MPs. Overall our findings provide valuable insights into the organ-specific accumulation of MPs in apex predators. Adélie penguins emerge as promising environmental bio-monitoring species, offering insights into the potential trophic transfer of MPs within frigid environments.

Abstract:In the social network interoperability space, several organizations have made great strides in forging agreements on interaction protocols among applications and between applications and their host containers. Less attention has been paid to another critical aspect of application interoperability, i.e. the shared representations of social network data. The importance of a shared syntax and semantics can not be overestimated: in practice the mappings among (versions of) data formats and vocabularies are too difficult to infer automatically and result in a serious loss of information. Semantic technologies are likely to offer a way out, but do not provide an adequate solution at the current state of the art, largely because of a lack of coordination among related efforts. In this paper, we will illustrate some of the practical problems we have encountered when helping large publishers to annotate their content with microformats and existing RDF vocabularies (ontologies) in the context of SearchMonkey, Yahoo’s Semantic Web product. We will also discuss potential solutions. While some of these issues may seem trivial at first, a lack of agreement on their solution still means that often applications developed by our users cannot fully rely on the data they receive.
Microplastics in bulk atmospheric deposition along the coastal region of Victoria Land, Antarctica

Abstract:The increasing global concern over microplastic pollution has driven a surge in research efforts aimed at detecting microplastics across various ecosystems. Airborne microplastics (MPs) have been identified in remote environments worldwide, including Antarctica. However, data on bulk atmospheric deposition remain scarce. From January to December 2020, atmospheric deposition was directly collected using passive samplers placed in eight sites across Victoria Land. Using Raman Microspectroscopy, MPs were identified in six out of the seven samples collected (one sample was lost due to the extreme weather conditions). The average daily MP deposition for Victoria Land was 1.7 ± 1.1 MPs m-2 d-1, with values ranging from 0.76 to 3.44 MPs m-2 d-1. The majority (53 %) of MPs found in the atmospheric deposition were in the size class of 5-10 μm, and the main shape of MPs was fragments (95 %). The predominant plastic type was polypropylene (31 %), followed by polyethylene (19 %) and polycarbonate (12 %). Polystyrene, polyester, styrene and polyethylene terephthalate each accounted for ~6 %. Microplastics identified in the coastal sites may have local origins, potentially associated with scientific activities at research stations. Conversely, a backward trajectories analysis suggested a potential contribution of atmospheric transport to microplastic deposition at Larsen Glacier and Tourmaline Plateau, the two most remote sites of the study area, where the highest MP concentrations were detected. Our findings present the first evidence of microplastics in the Antarctic atmospheric deposition directly collected via passive samplers, highlighting the need for continued monitoring and research to assess the environmental impact of MPs, particularly in sensitive and remote ecosystems like Antarctica.

Abstract:Evidence of microplastic (MP) pollution in Antarctic terrestrial environments reinforces concerns about its potential impacts on soil, which plays a major role in ecological processes at ice-free areas. We investigated the effects of two common MP types on soil physicochemical properties and microbial responses of a marine terrace from Fildes Peninsula (King George Island, Antarctica). Soils were treated with polyethylene (PE) fragments and polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fibers at environmentally relevant doses (from 0.001% to 1% w w −1 ), in addition to a control treatment (0% w w −1 ), for 22 days in a pot incubation experiment under natural field conditions. The short-term impacts of MPs on soil physical, chemical and microbial attributes seem interrelated and were affected by both MP dose and type. The highest PAN fiber dose (0.1%) increased macro and total porosity, but decreased soil bulk density compared to control, whereas PE fragments treatments did not affect soil porosity. Soil respiration increased with increasing doses of PAN fibers reflecting impacts on physical properties. Both types of MPs increased microbial activity (fluorescein diacetate hydrolysis), decreased the cation exchange capacity but, especially PE fragments, increased Na + saturation. The highest dose of PAN fibers and PE fragments increased total nitrogen and total organic carbon, respectively, and both decreased the soil pH. We discussed potential causes for our findings in this initial assessment and addressed the need for further research considering the complexity of environmental factors to better understand the cumulative impacts of MP pollution in Antarctic soil environments.

Abstract:The Arctic and Antarctica represent two of the most inhospitable and poorly investigated biomes in the world. Although polar regions are still perceived as some of the most pristine places still in existence, these remote places are no longer immune to anthropogenic pollution, in particular, micro- and nanoplastics. Seabirds, avian species feeding mainly at sea, are indicators of change in the environment and represent an early study group of ecological indicators for plastic pollution. The goal of this bibliometric overview is to evaluate international research trends on the impacts of microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) on seabirds inhabiting polar regions. A total of at least 13 seabird species were reported to have ingested MPs from 1983–2023. Overall, 1130 samples were investigated, including stomach content, pouch content, guano, and pellets. Pellets were the most investigated substrate (699), followed by stomach contents (309), guano (101), and pouch contents (21). A median of 31.5 MPs per sample was found in the Arctic, with an average of 7.2 MPs per sample. A median of 35 MPs per sample was found in Antarctica, with an average of 1.1 MPs per sample. Overall, MPs were most frequently found in fragment form. A total of 3526 MPs were retrieved from stomachs (3013), pellets (398), guano (75), and pouch contents (40). Polyethylene was the dominant plastic polymer found, followed by polypropylene and polystyrene. The monitoring of MP ingestion is crucial to mitigating the impacts on marine and terrestrial organisms. Standardized protocols could boost the safeguarding of seabirds and reduce the impacts of MPs on polar regions.

Abstract:The seafloor is recognized as one of the major sinks for microplastics (MPs). However, to date there have been no studies reported the MP contamination in benthic organisms from the Arctic and sub-Arctic regions. Therefore, this study provided the first data on the abundances and characteristics of MPs in a total of 413 dominant benthic organisms representing 11 different species inhabiting in the shelf of Bering and Chukchi Seas. The mean abundances of MP uptake by the benthos from all sites ranged from 0.02 to 0.46 items g-1 wet weight (ww) or 0.04-1.67 items individual-1, which were lower values than those found in other regions worldwide. The highest value appeared at the northernmost site, implying that the sea ice and the cold current represent possible transport mediums. Interestingly, the predator A. rubens ingested the maximum quantities of MPs, suggesting that the trophic transfer of MPs through benthic food webs may play a critical role. Fibers constituted the major type (87%) in each species, followed by film (13%). The colors of fibers were classified as red (46%) and transparent (41%), and the film was all gray. The predominant composition was polyamide (PA) (46%), followed by polyethylene (PE) (23%), polyester (PET) (18%) and cellophane (CP) (13%). The most common sizes of MPs concentrated in the interval from 0.10 to 1.50 mm, and the mean size was 1.45 ± 0.13 mm. Further studies about the temporal trends and detrimental effects of MPs remain to be carried out in benthic organisms from the Arctic and sub-Arctic regions.

Abstract:Microplastics have been recognised as persistent marine contaminants and mounting evidence supports their designation as anthropogenic stressors to marine organisms. Despite the remoteness of Antarctica, microplastics contamination has been reported in every marine environment investigated in this area to date. Due to ocean currents and frontal systems, microplastics may become entrapped within polar regions and increase bioavailibilty to inhabiting fauna. Antarctic marine benthic invertebrates represent a research priority due to their sensitivity to change as well as contribution to ecological functioning and food webs. The current study investigated microplastics ingestion by the epifaunal, carnivorous polychaete Barrukia cristata and the infaunal, filter-feeding bivalve, Laternula elliptica. Animals were collected by SCUBA adjacent to Rothera research station, Adelaide Island. After digestion in 10 % potassium hydroxide (KOH) followed by filtration, microplastics ingested by individual animals were separated. Microplastics were then counted and characterised by shape, colour, size and polymer type by Micro-Fourier transform Infrared spectroscopy. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) was the most abundant polymer type, followed by polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA). Congruent to earlier reports, fibres were found to be the most abundant source of microplastics contamination. However, it must be highlighted that fragments were also recovered from the animals analysed. Results determined the current level of microplastics ingestion by two benthic marine invertebrates of different feeding strategies in coastal environments of the Antarctic Peninsula. These findings indicated the bioavailability of microplastics and highlighted the potential of trophic transfer throughout the Antarctic marine food web.
Microplastics in glaciers of Tibetan Plateau: Characteristics and potential sources

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) in glaciers of remote areas are a hot topic linking the global transport of atmospheric MPs. The Tibetan Plateau (TP) holds large volume of glaciers, providing an effective way to trace MPs transport. Moreover, MPs in glaciers may have adverse effects on the local ecosystem and human health. In this study, we investigate MPs in snowpits collected from six glaciers across the different domain of the TP. The average abundance of MPs in six snowpits is 339.22 ± 51.85 items L-1 (with size ≥10 μm) measured by Agilent 8700 Laser Direct Infrared Chemical Imaging System (LDIR), represented by relatively high MPs abundance in the southern TP and low in the northern TP. The polymers with lower density, namely polyethylene (PE), polyamide (PA), and rubber, are the main MPs types, which are predominated by fragments with sizes smaller than 100 μm in each snowpit. Sources of MPs on glaciers include local tourism and vehicle traffic emissions of MPs. Meanwhile, long-range atmospheric transport of MPs from surrounded regions cannot be ignored. Backward trajectory analysis indicates cross-boundary transport of atmospheric MPs from South Asia play an important role on MPs deposited onto TP glaciers. Analysis further reveals that MPs in glaciers are associated with atmospheric mineral dust deposition. This study provides new data for the investigation of MPs in glaciers of remote areas, and a reference for studying MPs in the ice cores of TP glaciers.
Identification of factors influencing the microplastic distribution in agricultural soil on Hainan Island

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are ubiquitous in agricultural soils, but to what extent and how environmental factors determine the source and fate of MPs in agricultural soils is not clear. In this study, Hainan Island, which has different climatic conditions, altitudes, and land uses across the island, was selected to investigate the MPs abundance and the shape, size, color, and polymer type of the MPs in agricultural soils. The main focus was on the role of land use type and the identification of environmental influencing factors. The results showed that MPs were detected in all the soil samples across the island, with an abundance range of 20 to 6790 items kg-1 and an average of 417 items kg-1. Fragments (46.8 %), MPs smaller than 0.5 mm (37.8 %), black MPs (48.3 %), and polypropylene MPs (56.8 %) were observed as the dominant MPs species. Significantly higher MPs abundance was found in mulched arable land, and higher contents of fibers and fragments were observed in woodland and paddy lands, respectively. With correlation and redundancy analyses, soil pH, soil organic matter content, and average annual temperature were found to be the main factors influencing the biotic/abiotic fragmentation of MPs. The regional population density, including tourism represented by the night light index, affects the input process of MPs. MPs transport and deposition were found to be affected by altitude, annual precipitation, and soil moisture content. This study represents the first large-scale study of MPs contamination in island agricultural soils and provides important data on the distribution, transport, and fate of MPs.

Abstract:Abstract. In recent years, airborne microplastics have been identified in a range of remote environments. However, data throughout the Southern Hemisphere, in particular Antarctica, are largely absent to date. We collected snow samples from 19 sites across the Ross Island region of Antarctica. Suspected microplastic particles were isolated and their composition confirmed using micro-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (μFTIR).We identified microplastics in all Antarctic snow samples at an average concentration of 29 particles L−1, with fibres the most common morphotype and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) the most common polymer. To investigate sources, backward air mass trajectories were run from the time of sampling. These indicate potential long-range transportation of up to 6000 kilometers, assuming a residence time of 6.5 days. Local sources were also identified as potential inputs into the environment, as the polymers identified were consistent with those used in clothing and equipment from nearby research stations. This study adds to the growing body of literature regarding microplastics as a ubiquitous airborne pollutant, and establishes their presence in Antarctica.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are 1–5 mm plastic particles that are serious global contaminants distributed throughout marine ecosystems. However, their impact on intertidal sediment microbial communities is poorly understood. In this study, we conducted a 30-day laboratory tidal microcosm experiment to investigate the effects of MPs on microbial communities. Specifically, we used the biodegradable polymers polylactic acid (PLA) and polybutylene succinate (PBS), as well as the conventional polymers polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polycarbonate (PC), and polyethylene (PE). Treatments with different concentrations (1–5%, w/w) of PLA- and PE-MPs were also included. We analyzed taxonomic variations in archaeal and bacterial communities using 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing. PLA-MPs at concentrations of 1% (w/w) rapidly altered microbiome composition. Total organic carbon and nitrite nitrogen were the key physicochemical factors and urease was the major enzyme shaping MP-exposed sediment microbial communities. Stochastic processes predominated in microbial assembly and the addition of biodegradable MPs enhanced the contribution of ecological selections. The major keystone taxa of archaea and bacteria were Nitrososphaeria and Alphaproteobacteria, respectively. MPs exposure had less effect on archaeal functions while nitrogen cycling decreased in PLA-MPs treatments. These findings expanded the current understanding of the mechanism and pattern that MPs affect sediment microbial communities.

Characterization and sources of indoor and outdoor microplastics and PM2.5: Possible relationships

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) were caused adverse impacts on the marine and terrestrial environments. MPs have been detected in atmospheric deposition, in both large cities and remote areas, raising concern for human health due to their potential intake. In this work, we report atmospheric deposition of MPs indoors and outdoors and explore the characteristics, and sources of atmospheric MPs. The characteristics of MPs in samples were detected via laser direct infrared (LDIR) spectroscopy and intelligent ultra-depth field microscopy. The potential sources of MPs were determined by backward trajectory analysis. All samples contained MPs, and the average concentrations were 241 ± 17 MPs/m 2 /d (outdoor) and 160 ± 7 MPs/m 2 /d (indoor). The observed MPs exhibited various colours, with black MPs accounting for the overwhelming majority (92%). The proportion of MPs with diameters smaller than 20 μm – 80 μm was 70%. Pellets were the most abundant shape of all MPs (60.4% ± 11%), followed by fragments (22.5% ± 3%) and fibres (17.1% ± 15%). In all samples, 7 polymers were detected, cellulose (average proportion: 66.1%) and polyamide (PA; average proportion: 12.5%) occupied the highest proportion. Follow by Fluorocarbon Rubber (FKM) 10.7%, Polyvinylchloride (PVC 8.4%), Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET 1.4%), Polyurethane (PU 0.5%), Polystyrene (PS 0.5%). Backward trajectory analysis revealed the influence of wind on MPs and PM 2.5 transport, and potential source contribution analysis demonstrated the potential sources of MPs. The results of this study indicated that PA accounted for the highest proportion of MPs (average proportion: 47.1%), followed by PVC 43.5%, PET 4.7%, PU 2.4%, PS 2.4%. Pellets were the most abundant of the three shapes. The influence of the airflow trajectory on MPs and PM 2.5 transport is remarkable, and the concentrations of these two pollutants were significantly correlated (r = 0.322, p < 0.01). Therefore, it is necessary to invest more effort in exploring the sources and transmission of MPs and developing routine MPs detection programs.

Abstract:Plastic pollution has emerged as a growing environmental concern, affecting even the most remote regions of the planet as the Antarctic continent, endangering its ecosystem and contributing to climate change. In this context, a continuous atmospheric microplastics monitoring study was conducted at Carlini Argentine Antarctic Station located in the southwest of 25 de Mayo (King George) Island (South Shetlands). Passive samplers were installed at three locations throughout the station, chosen based on the intensity of human activity and proved to be effective in collecting atmospheric particles over a one-year study period. Micro-FTIR and micro-Raman spectroscopies were used to characterize the suspected microplastic particles. These techniques revealed a wide variety of plastic polymers compositions and industrial dyes associated with textile and plastic materials. Microfibers were found to be the predominant particle form, constituting approximately 80% of the particles detected at each sampling point. Semi-synthetic cotton, polyester, and polyamide were widely detected, along with other plastic compositions. Micro-Raman spectroscopy confirmed the presence of indigo blue, reactive blue 238, and copper phthalocyanine on both synthetic and semi-synthetic fibers, representing the first report of these types of anthropogenic pigments in the Antarctic atmosphere. The results suggest a significant role of short-range transport from local human activities; however, the potential influence of large-scale atmospheric patterns should also be evaluated. Our findings highlight the need to expand the monitoring network to additional scientific stations and remote regions with minimal human activity. Increasing the number of observational sites and conducting complementary studies on airborne dispersion will strengthen assessments of potential long-range pollution sources.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are ubiquitously present in different environmental media that can lead to potential hazards to the global ecosystem and human health. As the largest producer and user of plastics in the world, the abundance and characteristics of MPs contamination in various environmental media in China deserve to be paid more attention. To assess the ecological and environmental risks of MPs, their abundance, sources and contamination characteristics in different environmental media in China were investigated. In this review, MPs data from 1862 sampling sites in six environmental media in China have been collected. The mean abundance of MPs in different environmental media was then summarized and analyzed, which was 160.35 ± 114.68 items m −3 in seawater, 413.91 ± 216.02 items kg −1 in seawater sediments, 3546.38 ± 382.61 items m −3 in inland water, 1297.71 ± 910.47 items kg −1 in inland water sediments, 1987.86 ± 1004.31 items kg −1 in soils, and 119.68 ± 85.40 items m −2 d −1 in atmospheric fallout, respectively. The sizes of MPs were mainly < 1 mm, and the types of MPs were mainly polypropylene, polyethylene and polyethylene terephthalate. In addition, we discussed the challenges posed by the inadequacy of MPs detection methods for the analysis of MPs contaminated areas and provided prospects on future research on MPs contamination. This review can improve our understanding of the pollution characteristics of MPs in China, illustrate the migration and transformation patterns of MPs in the overall environment, and provide reliable reference data for the development of MPs detection standards.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs), discovered in oceans, lakes, and rivers, can infiltrate the food chain through ingestion by organisms, potentially posing health risks. Our research is the first to study the composition and distribution of MPs in Bosten Lake's sediment. In May, the average abundance of MPs was 0.95±0.72 particles per 10 gs, and in October, it was 0.90±0.61 particles per 10 gs. Bohu Town had the highest MP abundance, with 1.75±0.35 particles per 10 gs in spring and 2 ± 0 particles per 10 gs in autumn. In May, 53 % of the MPs were transparent, while in October, black MPs constituted 58 %. The predominant morphology was fibrous, accounting for 61 % of the total. MPs in the size range of 0.2-1 mm made up 91 % and 66 % of the total in May and October, respectively. The most common types of MPs in May were polyethylene terephthalate (PET) at 40 % and polyethylene (PE) at 26 %. In October, PET was the most prevalent at 71 %, followed by poly(ether-ether-ketone)(PEEK) at 11 %. Certain microbial taxa, such as Actinobacteriota, Pseudomonas, and Vicinamibacteraceae, associated with MP degradation or complex carbon chain breakdown, were notably enriched in sediment areas with high MP concentrations. A significant positive correlation was observed between the abundance of MPs in sediments and Actinobacteriota. Additionally, the abundance of Thiobacillus, Ca.competibacter, and other bacteria involved in soil element cycling showed a significant positive correlation with the organic matter content in the sediments. Anaerobic bacteria like Thermoanaerobacterium displayed a significant positive correlation with water depth. Our study reveals the presence, composition, and distribution of MPs in Bosten Lake's sediments, shedding light on their potential ecological impact.
