Abstract:Plastic pollution is one of the growing environmental problems in the world currently. The situation of microplastics (MPs) in the South China Sea (SCS) is not yet fully understood. This study investigated the spatial distribution, morphological characterization, and chemical composition of MPs in surface seawater in the southwestern SCS, based on cruise data in 2018. Our analysis shows that the average abundance of surface MPs in seawater was 0.072 ± 0.053 particles/m 3 and 88.4% of MPs were <2 mm. 97.3% of MPs were fibers and fragments. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and cellophane were predominant polymer components of surface MPs. Higher MPs abundance (0.083 ± 0.063 particles/m 3 ) and bigger MPs sizes were found at surface water in Nansha Islands than in Xisha Islands (0.032 ± 0.01 particles/m 3 ). In addition, more polymer types of MPs were found in Nansha Islands, while more MPs films were found in Xisha Islands. PET and cellophane dominated in Nansha Islands, while PVC dominated in Xisha Islands with no cellophane detected. The surface MPs were low in abundance and diverse in polymers in the southwestern SCS with apparent differences between islands and between onshore and offshore, owing to plastics wastes from vessel traffics and some inhabited islands.

Cross-oceanic distribution and origin of microplastics in the subsurface water of the South China Sea and Eastern Indian Ocean

Abstract:Marine microplastic (MP) pollution is a global environmental problem that has received attention from scientific researchers and the public for the past several decades. However, without a suitably large-volume sampling method, the presence of MPs in subsurface water (< 5 m) is poorly understood. Here, MP content in subsurface water was determined using a pump-underway ship intake system along the cross-oceanic transect from the Pearl River Estuary to the Indian Ocean. The study regions have always been considered as one of the major MPs hotspots in the global oceans and still lack of study. Generally, MP abundance ranged between 0 and 4.97 items m-3, with an overall mean value of 0.40 ± 0.62 items m-3. A total of 679 MP particles were identified using μ-FT-IR. These collections identified polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polyester (PET) as the major polymers represented (73.14–88.81%). The presence of MPs in coastal regions was significantly higher than that in the open ocean, revealing the contribution of land-based sources to marine MPs and the ocean dynamics. Therefore, an effective and feasible way to retard the penetration of MPs into the marine environment is to exhibit controls at the source. No significant correlation was found between the MP abundance and the physical and chemical properties of water. The results of the analysis of similarities (ANOSIM) and non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) also showed that MP communities in different environments were significantly greater than the differences in different sites within the same environment. These findings of this study provide reliable information on MP distribution and characterization in cross-oceanic region of South China Sea and Eastern Indian Ocean, which will help to improve our understanding about the fate of MPs in the ocean.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs), known to cause environmental pollution, is attracting a growing attention worldwide owing to their extensive existence and potential risks to biota. The marginal sea areas are suspected to be especially susceptible to MPs pollution. Unfortunately, data on MPs in the surface water and sediments ecosystems are still limited, particularly in the southern coastal areas of China. The study was successfully utilized to explore the distribution and characteristics of MPs below 5 mm collected from 14 sites in the seas around Shenzhen, a typical special economic zone of China. MPs were detected in both surface water and sediments with concentrations ranging from 3.8 to 7.8 items per liter and 2.6 × 10 3 to 10.0 × 10 3 items per kilogram, respectively. The highest abundance of MPs appeared in S5/S9 and S14 in surface water and sediments, respectively. Fiber and film with small particle size (<0.5 mm) were identified as typical and abundant MPs type among all samples. In addition, polyethylene (PE) was considered as dominant forms of MPs in surface water and sediment samples. Results from this study indicated a positive correlation with abundance of MPs and urbanization rate, which also showed an evident difference of MPs in different urban functional areas. Based on the types and quantity of detected MPs, we assessed the risk of MPs pollution in this study area, and the ecological risk category of MPs was at a high level. Importantly, our work might be employed as a potential information so as to better understand MPs pollution, source tracing and ecological risk assessment, which enhances the possibility of achieving effective control and supervision of MPs pollution in southern coastal aera of China.

Abstract:Microplastic (MP) pollution is a serious global environmental problem, particularly in marine ecosystems. However, the pollution patterns of MPs in the ocean and atmosphere, particularly the sea-air interrelationship, remain unclear. Therefore, the abundance, distribution patterns, and sources of MPs in the seawater and atmosphere of the South China Sea (SCS) were comparatively investigated. The results showed that MPs were prevalent in the SCS with an average abundance of 103.4 ± 98.3 items/m3 in the seawater and 4.62 ± 3.60 items/100 m3 in the atmosphere. The spatial analysis indicated that the pollution patterns of seawater MPs were mainly determined by land-based discharge and sea surface currents, whereas atmospheric MPs were predominantly determined by air parcel trajectory and wind conditions. The highest MP abundance of 490 items/m3 in seawater was found at a station near Vietnam with current vortices. However, the highest MP abundance of 14.6 items/100 m3 in the atmosphere was found in air parcels with low-speed southerly winds from Malaysia. Similar MP compositions (e.g., polyethylene terephthalate, polystyrene, and polyethylene) were observed in the two environmental compartments. Furthermore, similar MP characteristics (e.g., shape, color, and size) in the seawater and atmosphere of the same region suggested a close relationship between the MPs in the two compartments. For this purpose, cluster analysis and calculation of the MP diversity integrated index were performed. The results showed an obvious dispersion between the two compartment clusters and a higher diversity integrated index of MPs in seawater than in the atmosphere, thus implying higher compositional diversity and more complex sources of MPs in seawater relative to the atmosphere. These findings deepen our understanding of MP fate and patterns in the semi-enclosed marginal sea environment and highlight the potential interrelationship of MPs in the air-sea system.

Abstract:Because traditional decision tree (DT) induction methods cannot efficiently take advantage of geospatial knowledge in the classification of remotely sensed imagery, several researchers have presented a co-location decision tree (CL-DT) method that combines the co-location technique with the traditional DT method. However, the CL-DT method only considers the Euclidean distance of neighborhood events, which cannot truly reflect the co-location relationship between instances for which there is a nonlinear distribution in a high-dimensional space. For this reason, this paper develops the theory and method for a maximum variance unfolding (MVU)-based CL-DT method (known as MVU-based CL-DT), which includes unfolding input data, unfolded distance calculations, MVU-based co-location rule generation, and MVU-based CL-DT generation. The proposed method has been validated by classifying remotely sensed imagery and is compared with four other types of methods, i.e., CL-DT, classification and regression tree (CART), random forests (RFs), and stacked auto-encoders (SAE), whose classification results are taken as “true values.” The experimental results demonstrate that: (1) the relative classification accuracies of the proposed method in three test areas are higher than CL-DT and CART, and are at the same level compared to RFs; and (2) the total number of nodes, the number of leaf nodes, and the number of levels are significantly decreased by the proposed method. The time taken for the data processing, decision tree generation, drawing of the tree, and generation of the rules are also shortened by the proposed method compared to CL-DT, CART, and RFs.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) have become a great concern owing to their persistence and ecotoxicity in various environmental compartments. MPs can be transported from land to oceans via the aquatic system, and the oceans are believed to be the final sink for MPs. To resolve the lack of data concerning MP contamination in the northern South China Sea (NSCS), coastal seawater and sediments were investigated. The sample sites included the coastal area from Hong Kong to western Guangdong Province, which provided a representative coverage of variable distance to the shore. MP particles were observed in all samples, suggesting a widespread MP pollution in NSCS. The average MP abundance was relatively high in South China Sea, but it was lower than that in other Chinese coastal areas. In all samples, the dominant MP polymer was polyethylene terephthalate fibers. No statistically significant correlation was found between the abundances of MPs in seawater and sediment. The MP distribution in surface water affected by the monsoon exhibited high abundance in the east and low in the west, and MPs were more abundant near the shore than away from it. The tropical cyclone had no obvious effect on the overall MP abundance except in the Hong Kong west marine water (R4), which may attribute to proximity to Hong Kong and other islands.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are of great concern to coral health, particularly enhanced biotoxicity of small microplastics (< 100 μm) (SMPs). However, their fate and harm to remote coral reef ecosystems remain poorly elucidated. This work systematically investigated the distributions and features of MPs and SMPs in sediments from 13 islands/reefs of the Xisha Islands, the South China Sea for comprehensively deciphering their accumulation, sources and risk to coral reef ecosystems. The results show that both MPs (average, 682 items/kg) and SMPs (average, 375 items/kg) exhibit heterogeneous distributions, with accumulation within atolls and dispersion across fringing islands, which controlled by human activities and hydrodynamic conditions. Cluster analysis for the first time reveals a pronounced difference in their compositions between the southern and northern Xisha Islands and resultant distinct sources, i.e., MPs in the north part were leaked mainly from local domestic sewage and fishing waste, while in the south part were probably derived from industrial effluents from adjacent countries. Our ecological risk assessment suggests that the ecosystem within the Yongle Atoll is exposed to a high-risk of MPs pollution. The novel results and proposed framework facilitate to effectively manage and control MPs and accordingly preserve a fragile biosphere in remote coral reefs.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) in marine environments have raised increasing concerns worldwide in recent years. China is one of the largest plastic producers in the world. In this review, available information on MPs in China Sea was reviewed, including studies on seawater, sediment, and biota. The status and limits of sampling methods of MPs were summarized, such as sampling tools, sampling volume, and depth of sampling. The analytical methods of MPs were outlined, such as sieving, density separation, purification, filtration, and visual sorting. The characteristics of MPs, such as abundances, sizes, shapes, polymer types, sources, and fates were analyzed. The abundances of MPs in China Sea varied from 0.1 to 27,840.0 items m-3 in seawater, and from 13.0 to 14,712.0 items kg-1 d.w. in sediments. Furthermore, MPs were mainly featured with sizes ranging from 0.001 to 0.5 mm, with colors of transparent and black, and polymer types of polypropylene and polyethylene. To promote research on MPs in China Sea, the sampling and analytical methods were insufficiently standardized and should be improved. As for microplastic (MP) pollution in China Sea, laws and regulations have already been established to manage and control plastic waste. Furthermore, several suggestions to control plastic pollution were as follows: (1) control marine plastic pollution at the source; (2) strengthen technological innovations; (3) urge people to minimize disposable plastic products in their daily lives; (4) strengthen international cooperation in the treatment of marine plastic waste.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) contamination of marine environments poses a significant ecological risk, although impacts on species' realized niche spaces remain unclear. The current study investigates MPs distribution across pelagic habitats, benthic sediments, and key biota in the South Yellow Sea, China. Samples were collected via trawling across estuarine transects, and tissues were digested to extract MPs. Density gradient separations and vacuum-filtrations prepared particle extracts for ATR-FTIR and Micro-Raman spectroscopic characterization. Sampling along industrialized river transects reveals ubiquitous plastic particle presence, with concentrations ranging from 0 to 51.68 item/L seawater. Contamination levels reach their peak at station estuaries before dispersing offshore, indicating significant waste stream inputs. Importantly, MPs detected in demersal and pelagic fish species, as well as in bivalves, confirm exposure across trophic niches. Gastrointestinal tract and gill concentrations reached 0.6 items/g fresh tissue, reflecting significant biological uptake and in vivo retention. The greatest population of organisms occurred adjacent to polluted areas. Overall, distribution of MPs from polluted rivers to coastal food webs was evident, suggesting potential negative impacts on key ecological functions in this system. These findings underscore the need to develop upstream mitigation efforts so as to minimize MPs contamination in areas where nearshore and offshore niches intersect.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) have emerged as a pollutant of significant global concern. The sandy beach is a fragile environment that deserves our special attention with regard to MP contamination, as this area is a hotspot that accumulates large quantities of plastic waste. Notably, our current understanding of the MP distribution on beaches and the scale of contamination is far from sufficient. Hence, this study investigated the occurrence and characteristics of MPs on 14 beaches along the coast of South China. The MPs were ubiquitously distributed in the sand, most were small, less than 1 mm. A total of 18 types of polymers were identified in the sand, suggesting that diverse types of MPs are present on the beaches. Polyethylene, polypropylene, and polystyrene were the dominant types of MPs in most of our sampling sites. The MP abundance was higher in the upper layers (0–20 cm) of the beach than in the deeper layers (20–40 cm) of the sampling site when characterized by depth (Yangjiang beach). Our study demonstrates the extent and severity of MP pollution on the beaches of South China and provides implications for future remediation measures. More effort is needed to clarify the vertical distribution of MPs on beaches, especially for those MPs less than 1 μm.

Abstract:The ecological stress caused by microplastic (MP) pollution in marine environments has attracted global attention. However, few studies have investigated the relationship between MP pollution and the microbial community in natural sediments. This study was the first to systematically characterize MP pollution (i.e., its abundance, shape, size and color) and investigate its relationship with the bacterial community in coastal sediments from Guangdong, South China, by microscopic observation and Illumina sequencing. The results of this study indicated that the abundance of microplastics (MPs), which was 344 ± 24 items/kg in 33 coastal sediments from 11 sites from South China, represented a relatively high level of MP pollution. MPs with sizes of < 0.5 m, 0.5-1.0 mm and 1-2 mm accounted for the highest proportion (75%) in the sediments. Fiber/film (82%) and white/blue (91%) were the dominant shapes and colors, respectively, in all MP samples. Furthermore, the abundances, three shapes (fiber, film and fragment), three sizes (< 0.5 mm, 0.5-1.0 mm and 1-2 mm), and two colors (blue and white) of MPs displayed positive correlations with some potential pathogens, including Vibrio, Pseudomonas, Bacillus and Streptococcus, but exhibited negative correlations with an environmentally friendly bacterial genus, Sphingomonas (which degrades various hazardous organic compounds), indicating that MPs might increase the potential ecological risks of coastal sediments. Our results may help to elucidate the relationship between MP pollution and the microbial community in coastal sediments.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) pose significant concerns for marine ecological security due to their minuteness and ubiquity. However, comprehensive knowledge on their distribution and fate in seawater columns remains limited. This study investigated the abundances and characteristics of MPs across 3-6 water layers in the South Yellow Sea and East China Sea. Results indicate that high-abundance small MPs (< 100 µm) (average 6567 items/m3) were hidden beneath the sea-surface, predominantly fine-grained particles (< 20 µm) and high-density polymers (> 1.03 g/cm3). The total suspended MPs (5.0-834.2 µm) are estimated at 2.9-3.1 × 1017 particles, with most of them occurring in upper layers. In profiles, their distribution varied by physical properties with depth; fragment-shaped and high-density MPs increased in proportion at greater depths, contrasting with fibrous MPs. These MPs originated primarily from the Yangtze River and their winter transport was driven by the Yangtze River Dilution Water, East China Sea Coastal Current, and Yellow Sea Warm Current, resulting in their accumulation in coastal and estuarine regions. Consequently, the Yangtze River Estuary ecosystem faces substantial risks from MP pollution throughout the water column. This work unveils the prevalence of small MPs in coastal water columns and intricate interaction between their fate and hydrodynamic conditions.

Abstract:During the production, use and disposal of plastic products, microplastics (MPs) are dispersed into the surrounding environment and have inevitable impacts on mangrove ecosystems in estuaries and offshore areas. In the mangroves of Southern China, the systematic evaluation of the distribution, characteristics and ecological risks of MPs is lacking. In this study, surface sediments (0-5 cm depth) were collected from six representative mangroves in China to explore MP contamination and its associated ecological risk. Based on the results, MP concentrations of MPs in mangrove sediments were as follows: FT (2249 +/- 747 items/kg), ZJ (736 +/- 269 items/kg), DF (649 +/- 443 items/kg), DZG (431 +/- 170 items/kg), YX (424 +/- 127 items/kg), and FCG (227 +/- 173 items/kg). The higher MP concentration in the Futian mangrove was mainly related to inputs from the Pearl River, the third largest river in China. The predominant shape, colour, and size of MPs were fibrous, white-transparent, and 500-5000 mu m, respectively. The main MP polymer types were polypropylene, polyethylene, and polystyrene. Degradation artefacts were present on surface of MPs as well as metallic and non-metallic elements. MPs concentration in mangrove sediments increased with increasing social-economic development of surrounding districts, which indicated the clear influence of anthropogenic activity on MP pollution in these mangroves. Furthermore, total organic carbon (TOC) and silt content were positively associated with MPs (P < 0.01), indicating a facilitatory role in deposition of MPs in mangroves. Based on a comprehensive evaluation using the potential ecological risk factor (E-i), potential ecological risk (RI), polymer risk index (H) and pollution load index (PLI), MPs were found to present ecological risks in these mangroves, with the highest risk occurring in the Futian mangrove. Abstract:Microplastic (MP) pollution in oceans is an emerging environmental problem that poses ecological risks for marine ecosystems. Based on the abundance, distribution, and characteristics of microplastics (MPs) in surface water, sediment, and organisms, MP sources, pollution, trophic transfer, and ecological risk in Xiangshan Bay, an area of intensive mariculture in East China Sea, were assessed in this study. MPs were prevalent in the environment and organisms, with overall abundances at a low-medium level compared with the levels in the coastal areas. In water, MPs were more abundant in the inner bay (0.32 items m-3), which is a more significant source of MPs with intensive mariculture than the central (0.09 items m-3) and outer bays (0.07 items m-3). The narrow and land-enclosed inner bay, with weak hydrodynamics for water exchange, retained MPs, thus increasing their abundance. The ecological risk of MPs in water was at a low-moderate level. The MP abundance in sediment did not vary significantly among the three regions of the bay. The morphological characteristics and polymers of the MPs differed in sediment from those in water, which was related to their diverse environmental redistribution routes. MP abundance ingested by organisms were related to their biological features and foraging habits. Overall, fish ingested more MPs than crustaceans, bivalves, and cephalopods, while zooplankton ingested the minimal MPs. Filter feeders ingested less MPs, with a preference for smaller particles than predators. MPs did not show trophic transfer behavior in organisms. Additionally, MPs ingested by infauna showed similar morphological and chemical characteristics compared to sediment at the point of organism residence, whereas MPs ingested by pelagic species were dissimilar to those in surface water. Our findings provide information for understanding MP pollution, source tracing, trophic transfer, and ecological risk assessment in coastal ecosystems.

Abstract:This study investigated the distribution, abundance, and mass budget of microplastics (MPs) in the Beibu Gulf, Northern South China Sea, focusing on their ecological significance and anthropogenic influence. Microplastics were found in all water and sediment samples, with concentrations in surface water ranging from 0.10 to 0.89 items/m³, and in bottom water from 0 to 0.85 items/m³. Sediment samples exhibited higher levels, ranging from 13.12 to 155.59 items/kg. The spatial distribution revealed higher concentrations along the northern Gulf and Guangxi Province, suggesting significant human influence from coastal activities, such as mariculture and industrial discharges. The study utilized both field data and a mass balance box model to estimate the MPs mass budget, revealing that oceanic flow and riverine discharge are major contributors, accounting for 49% and 52% of MPs, while Atmospheric deposition and sedimentation represents 8% and 1%, respectively. The inventory estimation calculated that 0.24 tons of MPs exist in the water column, and 137 tons in the sediment, emphasizing the substantial environmental burden posed by these pollutants. The significance of this research lies in its comprehensive assessment of MPs in a semi-enclosed gulf, providing critical insight into the role of coastal and hydrodynamic processes in MP distribution. This study highlights the urgent need for better waste management practices in coastal regions to mitigate microplastic pollution and its detrimental effects on marine ecosystems.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are widely distributed in marine environments. The pollution characteristics and risk assessment of MPs in estuarine sediments are still insufficient. In this study, the MPs pollution characteristics in surface sediments of the Liao Estuary and Daliao Estuary were investigated. The characteristics of MPs in sediments were determined by stereo microscopy and micro-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The results showed that the average MPs abundance ranged from 32.33 to 49.91 items·kg −1 d.w. The MPs were mainly composed of 500–2000 μm black and blue fibers. Five polymer types were identified, including rayon (RA) (87.46 %), polyethylene terephthalate (PET) (6.81 %), polyamide (PA) (2.94 %), polypropylene (PP) (2.17 %) and polyethylene (PE) (0.62 %). The pollution load index (PLI) risk assessment showed that all sampling sites were at Hazard Level I. Our results can provide useful information for assessing the environmental risks of MPs in coastal areas of China.

Abstract:Research on microplastic (MP) pollution in the marine environment has received widespread attention in recent years. To assess the degree of MP contamination in the intertidal zone of China, the abundance, shape, particle size and composition of MPs in sediment were investigated in this study. Sediment samples were collected from 13 stations along the coast of China. The density separation method was employed to isolate MPs from sediment and the polymer types of the MPs were determined by Fourier transform infrared microspectroscopy. Our study demonstrated that MP pollution was widespread in the 13 intertidal stations. The average abundance of MPs was 309 ± 81 items/kg dry weight. Fiber accounted for 71.5% of the isolated MPs, and the particles of less than 500 μm accounted for the highest proportion (35.0%). A total of 12 polymers were identified; the main types were rayon (RY), polypropylene (PP), polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polyethylene (PE). The shape and chemical composition of the MPs from the intertidal sediments of South and North China were different. In South China, MP fragments were more extensive, and PP was a more important component. In contrast, the intertidal sediments of North China contained more MP fibers with the majority being RY, indicating that the major source of MPs in the intertidal zone of North China may be domestic sewage. Additionally, the abundance of MPs in the intertidal sediments of the Pearl River and Jiulong River estuaries was higher than at other sites. A Spearman's correlation analysis showed that there was no correlation between MP abundance and sediment grain size or organic matter content. Our study highlights the ubiquitous distribution of MPs in the sediment along the coast of China and provides valuable information for risk assessment and source control of MP pollution in China's intertidal zone.

Abstract:Microplastic pollution in the marine environment has attracted worldwide attention. The South China Sea is considered a hotspot for microplastic pollution due to the developed industries and high population density around the South China Sea. The accumulation of microplastics in ecosystems can adversely affect the health of the environment and organisms. This paper reviews the recent microplastic studies conducted in the South China Sea, which novelty summarizes the abundance, types, and potential hazards of microplastics in coral reef ecosystems, mangrove ecosystems, seagrass bed ecosystems, and macroalgal ecosystems. A summary of the microplastic pollution status of four ecosystems and a risk assessment provides a more comprehensive understanding of the impact of microplastic pollution on marine ecosystems in the South China Sea. Microplastic abundances of up to 45,200 items/m3 were reported in coral reef surface waters, 5738.3 items/kg in mangrove sediments, and 927.3 items/kg in seagrass bed sediments. There are few studies of microplastics in the South China Sea macroalgae ecosystems. However, studies from other areas indicate that macroalgae can accumulate microplastics and are more likely to enter the food chain or be consumed by humans. Finally, this paper compared the current risk levels of microplastics in the coral reef, mangrove, and seagrass bed ecosystems based on available studies. Pollution load index (PLI) ranges from 3 to 31 in mangrove ecosystems, 5.7 to 11.9 in seagrass bed ecosystems, and 6.1 to 10.2 in coral reef ecosystems, respectively. The PLI index varies considerably between mangroves depending on the intensity of anthropogenic activity around the mangrove. Further studies on seagrass beds and macroalgal ecosystems are required to extend our understanding of microplastic pollution in marine environments. Recent microplastic detection in fish muscle tissue in mangroves requires more research to further the biological impact of microplastic ingestion and the potential food safety risks.
Distribution and co-occurrence of microplastics and co-existing pollutants in bottom water and sediment of the East China Sea

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) contamination in marine environment has been an emerging issue worldwide, notably due to the potential ecological risks of MPs with co-existing environmental contaminants and released toxic plastic additives. To verify the co-occurrence characteristics of MPs and co-existing pollutants in the benthic boundary layer (BBL), the distribution characteristics of MPs, and selected heavy metals (HMs) and halogenated flame retardants (Polybrominated diphenyl ethers, PBDEs, and Dechlorane Plus) in the bottom water and sediment were comprehensively investigated in the East China Sea (ECS). The sampling sites were selected along the coast of ECS, where might be significantly affected by terrigenous inputs and anthropogenic sources. MPs were abundant in the bottom water (62.8-480.2 items/L) and sediment (80.1-1346.7 items/kg d.w.) with polyester, polyethylene, and polypropylene being as the most abundant types and characterized as fiber/line, particle size 200-500 μm, and transparent/white. The abundance and characteristics of MPs demonstrated strong correlations within the bottom water and sediment, which might be due to the frequent exchange of materials. In addition, the abundance of MPs was significantly positively correlated with HMs (Cd, Cr, Pb) in the bottom water and PBDEs in sediment, respectively. According to the scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry analysis, MPs might act as carriers to transport and co-sediment the co-existing pollutants in water, and physically adsorb or chemically bind with pollutants in sediment. These results could help to elucidate the sources, migration, and fate, and verify the occurrence and potential risks of MPs and their co-existing pollutants in BBL, thus realize the management and control of MPs contamination in marine.

Abstract:This study conducted an analysis of microplastics (MPs) pollution in a coastal region of the Pearl River Estuary (PRE) in the South China Sea. The results show that the abundance of MPs during the rainy season reached 545.5 particles m−3, which was 1.85-fold higher than during the dry season. The spatial distribution of MPs also varied offshore in the following order: the river > estuary > sea. The average abundance of MPs in the river was 1.17-fold higher than that of the estuary and 4.65-fold higher than that of the marine environment. There were large amounts of gray, white, and green MPs, and about 53.5–73.9% of the MPs were less than 0.5 mm. The main forms of MPs were fibers, granules, fragments, and films. MPs composed of polyethylene accounted for 35.7–38.8%. PCA analysis showed that MPs carried by the river were an important source of MP pollution in the coastal waters.
