Abstract:A one-dimensional (computationally fast) model of a monoclinic-crystal ultrasonic transducer is presented. Based on elastic equations and piezoelectric constitutive relations relevant for a monoclinic crystal, a set of mathematical-modelling equations is derived. Special emphasis is given to the problem where a 6mm PZT-2 material is excited electrically along a general direction in the X-Z crystal-axis plane. We determine the electrical impedance as a function of frequency. Resonance conditions are discussed including dependencies with the PZT-2 layer thickness. Results are also presented for the angular dependence of the PZT-2/water interface pressure (where angle refers to the excitation direction in the X-Z plane) in the case where the PZT-2 layer is embedded into semi-infinite layers of air and water on either side. Finally, the PZT-2/water interface pressure signal for a transducer is computed subject to an eight-period sinusoidal current burst with driving frequency at 1 MHz. The present model is suitable for optimization of the dynamic transducer response as a function of excitation-direction angle and other physical parameters.

Abstract:In this study, a method to develop a resonance vibration model of a piezo-bar with slanted ceramics is presented by considering piezoelectric loss coefficients. The vibration model reported here predicts natural frequencies and mode shapes for longitudinal and torsional modes. Analytical results for the longitudinal and torsional vibration displacements were formulated as a function of material and geometric properties. Parametrical analysis of the resonance vibration modes and the explicit solution of the vibration displacement provide a tool for improving the design and developing control schemes for devices such as ultrasonic motors that utilize this structure. Model calculations were compared with ATILA™ finite element analysis simulations and good agreements were found. The model and the formulas to find the resonance frequencies and to calculate the vibration displacement were verified for different design parameters. Although the model was developed for a slanted ceramic stator of a multimode ultrasonic motor, the method to develop the model can be utilized for other single-degree-of-freedom piezoelectric ceramic applications.

Abstract:Electrical modeling and vibration control analysis of piezoelectric structronic systems are of great significance in design of new smart structures. However, studies of electrical modeling of piezoelectric structronic plate systems by using voltage signals to evaluate real-time dynamic displacements are scarce in open literatures. An equivalent circuit model is presented to simulate the piezoelectric structronic plate/sensor/actuator system with simply supported boundary conditions, so that the actual physical model could be replaced by a single circuit chip in the future. By means of the finite difference (FD) discretization method, the higher order dynamic partial differential equations (PDE) of plate’s structure/sensor signal/control system are transformed to finite difference equations and further represented by electronic components. Electrical simulation model of the piezoelectric structronic plate systems based on finite difference discretization is established. Meanwhile, an equivalent circuit design program is proposed. Control characteristics of the structronic plate model are analyzed and the control effects are compatible with the results of the numerical model in relevant references. Thus, numerical simulation result presented in this paper can provide a reference for the further research of electrical modeling of more complex piezoelectric structronic plate systems.
An Original 2-D Analytical Model for Investigating Coupled Vibrations of Finite Piezoelectric Resonators

Abstract:This article deals with 2-D modeling of coupled vibrations of finite piezoelectric resonators. A general solution for all the physical quantities in the Cartesian and cylindrical coordinate systems is deduced from the governing equations by expansion in series summation of trigonometric functions of thickness coordinate and trigonometric or Bessel functions of the lateral one. The essential difference between this model and the earlier ones is that instead of expressing mainly in the thickness coordinate and integration through the thickness, the solutions are expressed in the form of double Fourier series augmented by single Fourier or Fourier-Bessel series, which contributes to better satisfy the mechanical and electrical boundary conditions. The dynamic stiffness matrix of the system is developed. Electrical impedances of a typical piezoelectric parallelepiped under stress-free and symmetrical loading conditions and its frequency spectrum for different width-to-thickness ratios are calculated using our model as well as by the finite element method. A comparison shows an excellent agreement. Finally, theoretical and measured electrical impedances of a piezoelectric parallelepiped and a piezoelectric disk are compared and discussed. The 2-D theoretical model proposed here is shown to be accurate and efficient for coupled vibration analysis of piezoelectric resonators and is applicable for any set of finite dimensions and crystal symmetry.

Abstract:A practical piezoelectric vibration energy harvesting (PVEH) system is usually composed of two coupled parts: a harvesting structure and an interface circuit. Thus, it is much necessary to build system-level coupled models for analyzing PVEH systems, so that the whole PVEH system can be optimized to obtain a high overall efficiency. In this paper, two classes of coupled models are proposed by joint finite element and circuit analysis. The first one is to integrate the equivalent circuit model of the harvesting structure with the interface circuit and the second one is to integrate the equivalent electrical impedance of the interface circuit into the finite element model of the harvesting structure. Then equivalent circuit model parameters of the harvesting structure are estimated by finite element analysis and the equivalent electrical impedance of the interface circuit is derived by circuit analysis. In the end, simulations are done to validate and compare the proposed two classes of system-level coupled models. The results demonstrate that harvested powers from the two classes of coupled models approximate to theoretic values. Thus, the proposed coupled models can be used for system-level optimizations in engineering applications.

Abstract:Energy harvesting (EH) is a multidisciplinary research area, involving physics, materials science and engineering, with the objective of providing renewable sources of sufficient power to operate targeted low-power applications. Piezoelectric transducers are often used for vibrational, inertial and direct movement EH. One problem is that, due to the stiffness of the most common material (PZT) and typically useful sizes, intrinsic resonant frequencies are normally high, whereas the available power is often concentrated at low frequencies. The aim of the plucking technique of frequency up-conversion, also known as "pizzicato" excitation, is to bridge this frequency gap. In this paper, the technique is modelled analytically. The analytical model is developed starting from the Euler-Bernoulli beam equations modified for piezoelectric coupling. A system of differential equations and associated initial conditions are derived which describe the free vibration of a piezoelectric bimorph in the last part of the plucking excitation, i.e. after release. The system permits the calculation of the mechanical response and the time evolution of the power generated and represents a ready-to-use modelling tool which will be specially useful for optimisation work.

Abstract:Advanced structures with integrated self-monitoring and control capabilities are becoming very important due to the rapid development of “intelligent” mechanical systems and space structures. Since the structures are distributed and flexible in nature, distributed dynamic measurement and active vibration suppression are of importance to their performance. In this paper, a new structure (shell or plate) containing an integrated distributed piezoelectric sensor and actuator is proposed. The distributed piezoelectric sensing layer monitors the structural oscillation due to the direct piezoelectric effect and the distributed actuator layer suppresses the oscillation via the converse piezoelectric effect. For modeling flexibility and versatility, a new piezoelectric finite element with internal degrees of freedom is derived. The performance of a plate model with distributed piezoelectric sensor/actuator is evaluated. Applications to distributed dynamic measurement and control of the advanced structures are also demonstrated.

Abstract:In the process of activating non-conductive smart-structures using piezoelectric patches, one possible method is to add a conductive layer to ensure electrical contact of both electrodes of the ceramic. Therefore, depending on the stiffness and the thickness of this layer, changes in the overall piezoelectric properties lead to a loss in the electromechanical coupling that can be implemented. The purpose of this work is to study the impact of this added electrode layer depending on its thickness. A model of the effect of this layer on the piezoelectrical coefficients has been derived from the previous approach of Hashimoto and Yamagushi and successfully compared to experimental data. This global model computes the variation of all the piezoelectric coefficients, and more precisely of k31 or d31 for various brass electrode volumes relative to the ceramic volume. A decrease in the lateral electromechanical coupling factor k31 was observed and quantified. NAVY II PZT piezoelectric transducers were characterized using IEEE standard methods, with brass electrode thicknesses ranging from 50 to 400 microns. The model fits very well as shown by the results, leading to good expectations for the use of this design approach for actuators or sensors embedded in smart-structures.

Abstract:The idea of vibration-to-electric energy conversion for powering small electronic components by using the ambient vibration energy has been investigated by researchers from different disciplines in the last decade. Among the possible transduction mechanisms, piezoelectric transduction has received the most attention for converting ambient vibrations to useful electrical energy. In the last five years, there have been a considerable number of publications using various models for the electromechanical behavior of piezoelectric energy harvester beams. The models used in the literature range from elementary single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) models to approximate distributed parameter models as well as analytical distributed parameter solution attempts. Because of the diverse nature of researchers working in energy harvesting (including electrical, mechanical and materials engineers), several oversimplified and incorrect physical assumptions have been propagated in the literature. Issues of the correct formulation for piezoelectric coupling, correct physical modeling, use of low fidelity models, incorrect base motion modeling, and the use of static expressions in a fundamentally dynamic problem are discussed and clarified here. These common indiscretions, which have been repeated in the existing piezoelectric energy harvesting literature, are addressed and clarified with improved models, and examples are provided. This paper aims to provide corrections and necessary clarifications for researchers from different engineering disciplines interested in electromechanical modeling of piezoelectric energy harvesters.

Abstract:Piezoelectric stacks have proved to be effective for micro/nano motion actuators with large blocking forces. A critical problem is to build their electro-mechanical model for systematic design of statics and dynamics including piezoelectric hysteresis and elasto-kinematics of compliant mechanisms. To ease this issue, this paper proposes a new electro-mechanical dynamic stiffness matrix of piezoelectric stacks to enable a systematic analysis. Positive and inverse piezoelectric effects are included into the dynamic stiffness matrix of Timoshenko beams in the form of Taylor's series with a clear definition of physical parameters. Consequently, the Jacobian matrix, input/output stiffness, natural frequencies, frequency-domain spectrums of mechanical displacement and electrical impedance as well as the time-domain response of piezoelectric hysteresis can be fully obtained with a single modeling process. Particularly, the time-domain response in the presence of piezoelectric rate-dependent hysteresis and dynamic resonance behaviors of compliant mechanisms is captured in a parameter-insightful way but not the manner in Hammerstein hysteresis model with a black-box transfer function. Experiments on a proof-of-concept prototype of precision positioning stage verify the easy operation and satisfying prediction accuracy of the presented approach.

Analysis of High Power Behavior in Piezoelectric Ceramics from a Mechanical Energy Density Perspective

Abstract:In this work, a new methodology for comparing high power performance of different piezoelectric materials is presented. When comparing high power performance of piezoelectric materials of varying compositions and vibration modes, there exists an inherent problem in comparing the mechanical quality factor directly. Typically the behavior of the mechanical quality factor is reported as a function of tip vibration velocity of the sample. This paper shows why this approach can be inherently problematic and proposes an energy approach to characterize the mechanical quality factor as the solution. By utilizing mechanical energy density ($u_{e}$), the mass density of the material system ($\rho$), and the vibration mode shape (e.g. $k_{31}$ and $k_{p}$) of the sample are accounted for. Therefore, a better method to compare high power performance of varying piezoelectric compositions is introduced. Furthermore, the new method is applied to various compositions by using data available in the literature. As a result, the high power behavior of the materials appear to be significantly different when the new "energy density approach" is used to compare the mechanical quality factor rather than vibration velocity. Also, the technique's ability to be utilized to consolidate data from different resonators to determine anisotropic loss factors is demonstrated on hard and soft PZT samples of $k_{31}$ and $k_{p}$ geometries.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Inferences about linguistic competence in children are typically based on spontaneous speech. This poses a problem since we know that other factors are also involved in speech production. Children who may use complex object and adverbial NPs do not use complex subject NPs. Is this a competence deficit, a performance problem, or simply a reflection of pragmatic factors? Evidence presented here suggests that children probably do not need complex subjects. An extensive use of pronouns in subject but not object position indicates that pragmatics may account for the distribution of clauses in their speech. A similar pattern in adult speech indicates there is no warrant to conclude children's lack of subject clauses reflects anything more than the nature of spontaneous speech.

Abstract:As a compact and durable design concept, piezoelectric energy harvesting skin (PEH skin) has been recently proposed for self-powered electronic device applications. This study aims to develop an electromechanically-coupled analytical model of PEH skin considering the inertia and stiffness effects of a piezoelectric patch. Based on Kirchhoff plate theory, Hamilton's principle is used to derive the electromechanically-coupled differential equation of motion. Due to the geometric discontinuity of the piezoelectric patch, the Rayleigh–Ritz method is applied to calculate the natural frequency and corresponding mode shapes. The electrical circuit equation is derived from Gauss's law. Output voltage is estimated by solving the equation of motion and electrical circuit equation, simultaneously. For the purpose of evaluating the predictive capability, the results of the electromechanically-coupled analytical model are compared with those of the finite element method in a hierarchical manner. The outstanding merits of the electromechanically-coupled analytical model of PEH skin are three-fold: (1) consideration of the inertia and stiffness effects of the piezoelectric patches; (2) physical parameterization between the two-dimensional mechanical configuration and piezoelectric transduction; (3) manipulability of the twisting modes of a cantilever plate with a small aspect ratio.

Modeling the Piezoelectric Cantilever Resonator with Different Width Layers

Abstract:The piezoelectric cantilever resonator is used widely in many fields because of its perfect design, easy-to-control process, easy integration with the integrated circuit. The tip displacement and resonance frequency are two important characters of the piezoelectric cantilever resonator and many models are used to characterize them. However, these models are only suitable for the piezoelectric cantilever with the same width layers. To accurately characterize the piezoelectric cantilever resonators with different width layers, a novel model is proposed for predicting the tip displacement and resonance frequency. The results show that the model is in good agreement with the finite element method (FEM) simulation and experiment measurements, the tip displacement error is no more than 6%, the errors of the first, second, and third-order resonance frequency between theoretical values and measured results are 1.63%, 1.18%, and 0.51%, respectively. Finally, a discussion of the tip displacement of the piezoelectric cantilever resonator when the second layer is null, electrode, or silicon oxide (SiO2) is presented, and the utility of the model as a design tool for specifying the tip displacement and resonance frequency is demonstrated. Furthermore, this model can also be extended to characterize the piezoelectric cantilever with n-layer film or piezoelectric doubly clamped beam.

A finite element method for modelling electromechanical wave propagation in anisotropic piezoelectric media

Abstract:We describe and evaluate a numerical solution strategy for simulating surface acoustic waves through semiconductor devices with complex geometries. This multi-physics problem is of particular relevance to the design of quantum electronic devices. The mathematical model consists of two coupled partial differential equations for the elastic wave propagation and the electric field, respectively, in anisotropic piezoelectric media. These equations are discretized by the finite element method in space and by a finite difference method in time. The latter method yields a convenient numerical decoupling of the governing equations. We describe how a computer implementation can utilize the decoupling and via object-oriented programming techniques reuse independent codes for the Poisson equation and the linear time-dependent elasticity equation. First we apply the simulator to a simplified model problem for verifying the implementation, and thereafter we show that the methodology is capable of simulating a real-world case from nanotechnology, involving surface acoustic waves in a geometrically non-trivial device made of Gallium Arsenide.

Analytical Modelling and Free Vibration Analysis of Piezoelectric Bimorphs

Abstract:An efficient and accurate analytical model for piezoelectric bimorph based on the improved first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT) is developed in this work. The model combines the equivalent single-layer approach for mechanical displacements and a layerwise-type modelling of the electric potential. Particular attention is devoted to the boundary conditions on the outside faces and to the interface continuity conditions of the bimorphs for the electromechanical variables. Shear correction factor (k) is introduced to modify both the shear stress and the electric displacement of each layer. And the detailed mathematical derivations are presented. Free vibration problem of simply supported piezoelectric bimorphs with series or parallel arrangement is investigated for the closed circuit condition, and the results for different length-to-thickness ratios are compared with those obtained from the exact 2D solution. Excellent agreements between the present model prediction withk=8/9 and the exact solutions are observed for the resonant frequencies.

Abstract:Radially layered cylindrical piezoceramic/epoxy composite transducers have been designed by integrating the excellent performance of piezoelectric/polymer composites and the radial radiation ability of cylindrical configurations, which are promising in developing novel ultrasonic and underwater sound techniques. Our previous study has explored the effects of the external resistance on the electromechanical characteristics of the transducer, and obtained some valuable findings. To clearly understand the electromechanical characteristics of the transducer and to guide the device design, in this paper, parametric analysis was performed to reveal the effects of multiple key factors on the electromechanical characteristics. These factors include material parameters of epoxy layers, piezoceramic material types, and locations of piezoceramic rings. In order to better analyze the influence of these factors, a modified theoretical model, in which every layer has different geometric and material parameters, was developed based on the model given in the previous work. Furthermore, the reliability of the model was validated by the ANSYS simulation results and the experimental results. The present investigation provides some helpful guidelines to design and optimize the radially layered cylindrical piezoceramic/epoxy composite transducers.

Abstract:This article describes a mathematical model simplification, designed to automate the iterative process of non-circular drilling with a precise shape. This model has been optimized for systems that already have experimental data for processing and analysis. Additionally, using optimization steps, the model can be used for systems with insufficient experimental data with a self-learning opportunity. The high-end model can be used for drilling systems represented as a “black box” without knowing of any parameters of the system. The simplification and assumptions algorithm is based on controlling the input signal for non-circular drilling in the cylinders of internal combustion engines using a drilling machine controlled by 8 piezoelectric actuators. The total dynamics of this system is unknown and consists of the dynamics of electrical converters, piezo-kinematics, and mechanics. Simplification is carried out starting from the methods of diacoptics for a complex system with different process-flow rates, and ending with one or the sum of linear models valid for a given system of assumptions.

Abstract:Mechanically amplified piezoelectric actuators (APAs) can be found in many scenarios of precision engineering and instrumental devices. However, the electro-mechanical design of curvilinear APAs is difficult due to the existence of curved flexure beams and multi-domain electro-elasto dynamics. In this paper, the electro-mechanical behavior of elliptical APAs is studied by exploiting a novel electro-mechanical transfer matrix method. The motivation is to facilitate both the static and dynamic analyses of such a complex APA with curvilinear flexure beams by considering the multi-domain dynamics of piezoelectric stacks and compliant mechanisms from an electro-mechanical viewpoint. To this end, an analytical electro-elasto transfer matrix of piezoelectric stacks operating at the d33 mode is derived in the form of Taylor's series based on Timoshenko beam theory. The dynamic response spectrum of displacement and impedance for elliptical APAs are insightfully captured by such an electro-mechanical model. Different topologies of elliptical APAs are also compared and the optimal configuration is suggested. At last, a proof-of-concept prototype is fabricated and tested with a special focus on experimental evaluation of the electro-mechanical coupling model.
