Abstract:To investigate the ballistic resistance and failure pattern of aeroengine casing following the impact of disk fragments, and to determine the optimum case structure, the phenomena of a 1/3rd disk fragment impact on single and double-layered thin plate targets were simulated using nonlinear dynamical analysis software MSC.Dytran. Strain rate effect was introduced in a Johnson-Cook (JC) material model for the disk fragment and the plate. Impact modeling was based on the Arbitrary Lagrange-Eulerian method, and simulated using explicit finite element method (FEM). Simulation results showed that the major failure pattern of the plate is shearing and tensile fracture with large plastic deformation. It was also concluded that the ballistic limit velocity increases with the standoff distance when it is beyond a certain value, and that greater resistance is obtained when the front plate has either a proportionately low or high thickness. The impact resistance of a double-layered plate may exceed that of a single plate if the thicknesses and standoff distance of the two plates are set appropriately.
A finite element model for predicting impact-induced damage to a skin simulant

Abstract:A finite element model was developed for assessing the efficacy of rugby body padding in reducing the risk of sustaining cuts and abrasions. The model was developed to predict the onset of damage to a soft tissue simulant from concentrated impact loading (i.e., stud impact) and compared against a corresponding experiment. The damage modelling techniques involved defining an element deletion criterion, whereby those on the surface of the surrogate were deleted if their maximum principal stress reached a predefined value. Candidate maximum principal stress values for element deletion criteria were identified independently from puncture test simulations on the soft tissue simulant. Experimental impacts with a stud were carried out at three energies (2, 4 and 6 J), at three angular orientations (0°, 15° and 30°) and compared to corresponding simulations. Suitable maximum principal stress values for element deletion criteria settings were first identified for the 4 J impact, selecting the candidates that best matched the experimental results. The same element deletion settings were then applied in simulations at 2 and 6 J and the validity of the model was further assessed (difference < 15% for the force at tear and < 30% for time to tear). The damage modelling techniques presented here could be applied to other skin simulants to assess the onset of skin injuries and the ability of padding to prevent them.

Based on Lagrange method, impaction was simulated using explicit finite element method. Simulation results show that the major failure patterns of the plate target include plastic deformation, shear and tensile fracture, and that the single-layer plate has greater resistance than any other double-layered plates. Conclusions are also made that the ballistic limit velocity increases with the distance when it is beyond a certain value, and that the greater resistance is obtained in low or high proportion of the first layer with a constant of the total thickness. So, the resistance of double-layered plate targets may exceed that of the single plate, by reasonably arranging the thickness and the standoff distance of two plates.
The biomechanical modelling of non-ballistic skin wounding: blunt-force injury

Abstract:Knowledge of the biomechanical dynamics of blunt force trauma is indispensable for forensic reconstruction of a wounding event. In this study, we describe and interpret wound features on a synthetic skin model under defined laboratory conditions. To simulate skin and the sub-dermal tissues we used open-celled polyurethane sponge (foam), covered by a silicone layer. A drop tube device with three tube lengths (300, 400, and 500 mm), each secured to a weighted steel scaffold and into which a round, 5-kg Federal dumbbell of length 180 mm and diameter 8 cm was placed delivered blows of known impact. To calculate energy and velocity at impact the experimental set-up was replicated using rigid-body dynamics and motion simulation software. We soaked each foam square in 500 mL water, until fully saturated, immediately before placing it beneath the drop tube. We then recorded and classified both external and internal lacerations. The association between external wounding rates and the explanatory variables sponge type, sponge thickness, and height were investigated using Poisson regression. Tears (lacerations) of the silicone skin layer resembled linear lacerations seen in the clinical literature and resulted from only 48.6% of impacts. Poisson regression showed there was no significant difference between the rate of external wounding for different sponge types (P = 0.294) or different drop heights (P = 0.276). Most impacts produced "internal wounds" or subsurface cavitation (96%). There were four internal "wound" types; Y-shape (53%), linear (25%), stellate (16%), and double crescent (6%). The two-way interaction height by sponge type was statistically significant in the analysis of variance model (P = 0.035). The other two-way interactions; height by thickness and sponge type by thickness, were also bordering on statistical significance (P = 0.061 and P = 0.071, respectively). The observation that external wounds were present for less than half of impacts only, but that nearly all impacts resulted in internal wounds, might explain the observed haematoma formation and contusions so often associated with blunt-force injuries. Our study also confirms the key role of hydrodynamic pressure changes in the actual tearing of subcutaneous tissue. At the moment and site of impact, transferred kinetic energy creates a region of high pressure on the fluid inside the tissue. As a result of the incompressibility of the fluid, this will be displaced away from the impact at a rate that depends on the velocity (or kinetic energy) of impact and the permeability and stiffness of the polymeric foam and skin layer.

Abstract:Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fiber composite has been extensively used to construct lightweight protective structures against ballistic impacts, yet little is known about its performance when subjected to combined blast and fragment impacts. Built upon a recently developed laboratory-scale experimental technique to generate simulated combined loading through the impact of a fragment-foam composite projectile launched from a light gas gun, the dynamic responses of fully-clamped UHMWPE plates subjected to combined loading were characterized experimentally, with corresponding deformation and failure modes compared with those measured with simulated blast loading alone. Subsequently, to explore the underlying physical mechanisms, three-dimensional (3D) numerical simulations with the method of finite elements (FE) were systematically carried out. Numerical predictions compared favorably well with experimental measurements, thus validating the feasibility of the established FE model. Relative to the case of blast loading alone, combined blast and fragment loading led to larger maximum deflections of clamped UHMWPE plates. The position of the FSP in the foam sabot affected significantly the performance of a UHMWPE target, either enhancing or decreasing its ballistic resistance. When the blast loading and fragment impact arrived simultaneously at the target, its ballistic resistance was superior to that achieved when subjected to fragment impact alone, and benefited from the accelerated movement of the target due to simultaneous blast loading.

Surface wave analysis of the skin for penetrating and non-penetrating projectile impact in porcine legs

Abstract:Secondary blast injuries may result from high-velocity projectile fragments which ultimately increase medical costs, reduce active work time, and decrease quality of life. The role of skin penetration requires more investigation in energy absorption and surface mechanics for implementation in computational ballistic models. High-speed ballistic penetration studies have not considered penetrating and non-penetrating biomechanical properties of the skin, including radial wave displacement, resultant surface wave speed, or projectile material influence. A helium-pressurized launcher was used to accelerate 3/8″ (9.525 mm) diameter spherical projectiles toward seventeen whole porcine legs from seven pigs (39.53 ± 7.28 kg) at projectile velocities below and above V50. Projectiles included a mix of materials: stainless steel (n = 26), Si3N4 (n = 24), and acetal plastic (n = 24). Tracker video analysis software was used to determine projectile velocity at impact from the perpendicular view and motion of the tissue displacement wave from the in-line view. Average radial wave displacement and surface wave speed were calculated for each projectile material and categorized by penetrating or non-penetrating impacts. Two-sample t-tests determined that non-penetrating projectiles resulted in significantly faster surface wave speeds in porcine skin for stainless steel (p = 0.002), plastic (p = 0.004), and Si3N4 ball bearings (p = 0.014), while ANOVA determined significant differences in radial wave displacement and surface wave speed between projectile materials. Surface wave speed was used to quantify mechanical properties of the skin including elastic modulus, shear modulus, and bulk modulus during ballistic impact, which may be implemented to simulate accurate deformation behavior in computational impact models.

Abstract:Understanding the mechanisms of hard-soft material interaction under impact loading is important not only in the defense industry but also in daily life. However, traditional mesh-based spatial discretization methods that are time consuming owing to the need for frequent re-meshing, such as the finite element method and finite difference method, can hardly handle large deformation involving failure evolution in a multi-phase interaction environment. The objective of this research is to develop a quasi-meshless particle method based on the material point method for the model-based simulation of the hard-soft material interaction response. To demonstrate the proposed procedure, scenarios of a hard-soft material impact test are considered, where a force is applied to layers of materials and a hard bar with an initial velocity impacts a target with layers of different materials. The stress wave propagation and resulting failure evolution are simulated and compared with available data. Future research tasks are then discussed on the basis of the preliminary results.

Abstract:Basalt and Kevlar materials are high-performance reinforcements used in armor systems. The present work presented that the combination of natural fiber (basalt) with synthetic fiber (Kevlar) and alumina tile composites improves ballistic performance. The partial replacement of basalt encourages the use of natural reinforcement for the development of eco-friendly armor. Continuum damage mechanics (CDM) based modeling is used with a high strain rate and implemented based on Yen's criteria. Cohesive elements are used at inter-layers for modeling the damage evolution. The damage initiation and propagation model is created and implemented as a user-defined subroutine in the ABAQUS finite element (FE) code (VUMAT). Parametric studies are performed by varying the stacking sequence of Kevlar 3D (K3D) and basalt 3D (B3D) layers and the best stacking is used with ceramic (alumina) material. The optimum stacking sequence of composite laminate thickness is investigated to design the light weight body armour and the better results are used to reduce the thickness of the panel, which is the key factor to design any armor panel. Results revealed the panels with basalt composite (B16) impacting with FSP impactor and alumina/Kevlar/basalt composite (C1K7B8) impacting with 9 mm FMJ impactor improved the ballistic performance as compared to H16, K8H8 and K8B8 stacking sequences.

Experimental and numerical investigations in ballistic applications have predominantly focused on determining the ballistic limit of target plates for various projectile shapes. However, limited attention has been given to the influence of projectile nose shapes at high impact velocities. To address this gap, 3D FE simulations were carried out on a 1 mm thin target plate using J-C material model, the Gruneisen equation of state (EOS), an erosion contact algorithm, and the explicit FE code LS-DYNA. The simulations involved impact of fragments of equal mass but different nose shapes. The results revealed a significant influence of fragment shape on both the ballistic limit and overall plastic deformation of the target plate. Particularly, the target plate impacted by a hexagonal pyramid fragment shape exhibited the highest ballistic limit and global plastic deformation. Further, it was also observed that at higher impact velocities, the former fragment shape caused the maximum damage to the target plate, while at lower impact velocities, the cubical fragment shape demonstrated the highest lethality. This difference in target damage is known to be governed by the energy required to erode the target and fragment material. The results from the current study offers valuable insights into how different fragment shapes influence the damage inflicted on target plates in ballistic scenarios. The findings presented in this study also offer guidance on selecting suitable fragment shapes for future use in Fragment Generator Warheads (FGW) in order to maximize the damage or lethality inflicted on targets.

Abstract:Data from matched birth and death records of infants born in Baltimore City were analyzed by a binary variable multiple regression analysis method to determine the effects of birthweight race socioeconomic status prenatal care maternal age and live birth order on neonatal and postneonatal mortality. Crude and net effects of each factor were compared to determine whether adjustments for the other factors modified its effects on neonatal and postneonatal mortality. Birthweight was found to be the most important factor in both neonatal and postneonatal mortality. Adjustments for the other factors did not modify the effect of birthweight. Prenatal care appeared to be an important factor in both neonatal and postnenonatal mortality. However interpretation of the effects of this factor was difficult and it was not clear if this variable represented the effects of medical care received. Race socioeconomic status and maternal age were important in the neonatal period only because of the their relation to birthweight. In the absence of birthweight effects these factors were found to have no effect on neonatal mortality. Both the crude and net effects of live birth order indicate that this factor was not important in the neonatal period. In the postneonatal period however all of these factors (except for race) were important. Next to birthweight maternal age and live birth order were most important in postneonatal mortality. Abstract:The challenges of today’s protective material developers' requirements for body armour target structure design, strength, stiffness, and light weight structures have historically come from composite structures having high cost, complex manufacturing, and time-consuming process. Hence, there is a need to identify suitable alternate materials with reliable composites and essential design requirements for high impact armour structures. At present, hybrid composite structures are increasingly utilized in armour structure developments because they offer quick adoption to produce low cost, high impact strength, and a methodology for easy and quick manufacturing process without compromising the performance of traditional composite structures. This experimental analysis reports that the prepared hybrid composite target structures are composed of woven polypropylene fabric impregnated with single, double, and triple layers with a prepared shear thickening fluid (STF) concentration (50 vol% silica dispersed in polyethylene glycol 600 g/mol) used as a core layer in this structure and a neat/silica gel coated aluminum face sheet is used as the skin material. The prepared STF is characterized through rheological analysis exhibits shear thickening behavior reveals that extensively depends on silica particle morphology, volume fraction, and particle size distribution. The prepared hybrid composite target structure test results demonstrate a significant enhancement in tensile strength, modulus, better peel resistance properties, and puncture resistance evaluated in different geometry of projectiles like flat, hemispherical, elliptical, and conical indentor penetration velocity at 500 mm/min have been performed to demonstrate the improvements in the target structure. It enhances the performance layer thickness increases with increasing puncture resistance for all indentors sequently identified and penetration damage of target structures varied with respect to indentor nose head surface area of contacts.

Abstract:Ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fiber composites are widely applied for bullet and explosion proofing. This study numerically investigated the dynamic response of a hollow cylindrical UHMWPE cross-ply laminate subjected to combined blast and fragment loading produced by an improvised explosive device (IED). A strain-rate-dependent, anisotropic, elastoplastic constitutive model with progressive failure was adopted for the laminates via a user subroutine and comprehensively verified against the experimental results from the literature. Three sets of simulations of fragment-only loading, blast-only loading and the combined loading were performed on different configurations of IEDs and laminates. It was found that the effects of the blast loading were much weaker than those of the fragment loading and caused very small deformation of the laminate’s middle, including somewhat pre-tension along the circumferential direction but almost no fiber fracture. Both with and without blast loading, the dense penetrations of the multiple fragments dominated the response of laminates, including perforated holes that were interconnected with each other and global ply splitting. As a result, the blast effects barely affected the anti-fragment performance of the laminates.

Abstract:Penetration models and calculating algorithms are presented, describing the dynamics and fracture of composite armor shields penetrated by high-speed small arms. A shield considered consists of hard (metal or ceramic) facing and multilayered fabric backing. A simple formula is proved for the projectile residual velocity after perforation of a thin facing. A new plastic-flow jet model is proposed for calculating penetration dynamics in the case of a thick facing of ceramic or metal-ceramic FGM materials. By bringing together the developed models into a calculating algorithm, a computer tool is designed enabling simulations of penetration processes in the above-mentioned shields and analysis of optimization problems. Some results of computer simulation are presented. It is revealed in particular that strength proof of pliable backing can be better as compared with more rigid backing. Comparison of calculations and test data shows sufficient applicability of the models and the tool.

Abstract:With increasing local conflicts worldwide, studying the impact response of body armor is crucial for enhancing soldier survival rates. However, there is still insufficient understanding of the back bulge expansion patterns, the impact waves transmission features, and blunt injury assessing method of body armor. To investigate these problems deeply, the three-dimensional digital image correlation method and numerical models were employed to reveal the ballistic response mechanism of ceramic/ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) composite body armor impacted by 7.62 mm rifle bullet. This study built theoretical function for the bulge expansion, revealed the wave transmission mechanism and fractures in both materials and their interaction. Firstly, the experiment revealed that the back-face bulge transverse expansion velocity exhibits a double exponential decrease. Secondly, the contour of back-face bulges consistently demonstrated excellent hyperbolic characteristics at various moments. Thirdly, the average Viscous Criterion (VC) and Blunt Criterion (BC) values were 5.37 and 0.95, corresponding to Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) values of 6 and 4. Fourthly, the simulation revealed that the ceramics transverse and radial cracks seems primarily induced by shear stress xy; ceramics conical cracks occurring at the boundaries of equivalent stress seems primarily induced by stress in x and y directions. Fifthly, numerical results revealed that the velocity of compression waves within the laminate increases over time in the impact direction and consistent with ceramic velocity impacted on the laminate. These findings lead to experimental and theoretical advances in the impact response mechanism of composite body armor and provide index for improving the protective performance.

Abstract:Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fiber reinforced composite laminates have been widely used to defend against projectiles and fragments. Although the ballistic performance of UHMWPE composites has been extensively characterized both experimentally and numerically, analytical modelling remains a challenge. This study develops a mechanism-based analytical model of UHMWPE cross-ply laminates, with the progressive process of projectile penetration divided into two sequential stages of local failure and bulging deformation: the former is characterized with the strain concentration model under local shock compaction, and the latter is described using a modified membrane stretching model. Compared with existing energy-based models, the current model enables revealing physical mechanisms underlying the deformation/failure processes of UHMWPE laminate subjected to projectile impact, with relevant parameters correlated with material properties. Further, without using any fitting parameter, the proposed analytical model can predict both the ballistic limit and residual projectile velocity. For validation, the model predictions are compared with existing test data, with good agreement achieved for varying projectile mass, projectile size, laminate type, and laminate thickness. It is demonstrated that the maximum strain under a penetrating projectile is controlled by the thickness of un-penetrated laminate and the growth of bulge, and that the longitudinal wave speed and maximum tensile strain in the UHMWPE laminate dictate its ballistic limit.

Abstract:In the military and chemical industry, modeling the fragmentation hazard field is of great significance in conducting the fatality risk assessment and calculating the safety distance for person. Although the ballistic methodology achieves the simulation of fragmentation flight trajectory, the acquisition of accurate initial projection data of fragmentation is a challenge. By coupling continuum-discontinuum element method and particle discrete element method, the fragmentation power algorithm is established, which achieves the integrated simulation of the initial projection data of fragmentation and the flight process of fragmentation. First, continuum-discontinuum element method is adopted to simulate the detonation products-driven fragmentation acceleration process by introducing the explosive detonation model, which achieves the acquisition of initial projection data of fragmentation. Then, the particle discrete element method is adopted to simulate the flight trajectory and power data of fragmentation. Based on the numerical and experimental result, the accuracy of fragmentation power algorithm is verified. In conjunction with the personal vulnerability model, a systematic numerical simulation framework is established to conduct the simulation-based personal fatality risk assessment when the metal-cased munition detonates accidentally, and the results indicate that the personal fatality risk due to the fragmentation becomes severer with the increase of munition curvature.

Abstract:Spallation occurs when materials exceed their tensile limits under extreme loading conditions, such as high-velocity impacts and shock loading. It is characterized by dynamic void nucleation and fracture growth as tensional waves propagate. Understanding and managing spallation are crucial for maintaining material integrity in extreme circumstances. This study employs numerical methods to investigate spallation and internal pressure in layered structures, which represent the most simplified version of composites. The focus is on understanding the underlying mechanisms and effects of spallation. As the number of layers increases to mimic realistic materials like laminates, the results exhibit behavior similar to that of homogeneous materials, which has significant implications. It is also noteworthy that some layer models of the shock profile, known as the pull-back signal, do not manifest despite the occurrence of internal fractures. This observation suggests that the existing spallation studies on multilayered structures, which rely solely on the shock profile's pull-back signal, may lead to errors in calculating spall strength for composite and layered materials.
