Abstract:A nature-inspired water-cycling system, akin to trees, to perform effective water and solar energy management for photosynthesis and transpiration is considered to be a promising strategy to solve water scarcity issues globally. However, challenges remain in terms of the relatively low transport rate, short transport distance, and unsatisfactory extraction efficiency. Herein, enlightened by conifer tracheid construction, an efficient water transport and evaporation system composed of a hierarchical structured aerogel is reported. This architecture with radially aligned channels, micron pores, and molecular meshes is realized by applying a radial ice-template method and in situ cryopolymerization technique. This nature-inspired design benefits the aerogel excellent capillary rise performance, realizing a long-distance (>28 cm at 190 min) and quick (>1 cm at 1 s, >9 cm at 300 s) antigravity water transport on a macroscopic scale, regardless of clean water, seawater, sandy groundwater, or dye-including effluent. Furthermore, an efficient water transpiration and collection is performed by the bilayer-structured aerogel with a carbon heat collector on an aerogel top, demonstrating a solar steam generation rate of 2.0 kg m(-2) h(-1) with the energy conversion efficiency up to 85.7% under one solar illumination. This biomimetic design with the advantage of water transport and evaporation provides a potential approach to realize water purification, regeneration, and desalination.

Abstract:Design of hierarchical micromorphology represents an important strategy for developing functional surfaces but has yet to be achieved for promising long-term dropwise condensation. Herein, micropapillaes overlaid with nanograss were created to enhance dropwise condensation. By analyzing the nucleation and evolution of the condensate droplets, we elucidated that these hierarchical micro-nanostructures topologized tapered gaps, which produced upward pressure, to achieve spontaneous dislodging of condensate microdroplet out of gaps, and then to trigger microdroplet navigation before finally departing from the surface by coalescence-induced jumping. The high mobility of condensate delayed flooding and contributed to a very high heat transfer coefficient of 218 kW·m–2·K–1. Moreover, these micropapillaes served as forts that protected the nanograss from being destroyed, resulting in improved mechanical and chemical robustness. Our work proposed new examples of topology creation for long-term dropwise condensation heat transfer and shed light on application integration of such promising functional surfaces.. Abstract:Microgroove structure, as an efficient condensation structure, has good application prospects in many fields. However, the interconnection of surface droplets caused by the inability to remove droplets from the ridge of the microgroove in a timely manner affects the efficiency of droplet condensation on the surface of the microgroove. In this paper, we report the promotion of droplet migration by designing non-uniform wetting surfaces with hydrophilic microgrooves and hydrophobic waxy layer ridges. The results indicate that the generation of a liquid film at the bottom of the microgroove is critical to facilitate the adsorption of ridge liquid to the bottom of the microgroove. In addition, the difference in high wettability between the ridges and the bottom contributes to bottom liquid film generation, and ridge adhesion affects the state of the surface after the ridge droplets are detached. This work is of great significance as it provides a reference for the structural design of high-efficiency fog collection systems.

Abstract:Water collection by dew condensation emerges as a sustainable solution to water scarcity. However, the transient condensation process that involves droplet nucleation, growth, and transport imposes conflicting requirements on surface properties. It is challenging to satisfy all benefits for different condensation stages simultaneously. By mimicking the structures and functions of moss Rhacocarpus, here, we report the attainment of dropwise condensation for efficient water collection even on a hydrophilic surface gated by a liquid suction mechanism. The Rhacocarpus-inspired porous surface (RIPS), which possesses a three-level wettability gradient, facilitates a rapid, directional, and persistent droplet suction. Such suction condensation enables a low nucleation barrier, frequent surface refreshing, and well-defined maximum droplet shedding radius simultaneously. Thus, a maximum ∼160% enhancement in water collection performance compared to the hydrophobic surface is achieved. Our work provides new insights and a design route for developing engineered materials for a wide range of water-harvesting and phase-change heat-transfer applications.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Controlling droplet transport behaviors on micro/nanoscale-modified surfaces is a key challenge for condensation enhancement. Improving its efficiency can greatly benefit water harvesting, the organic Rankine cycle, and nuclear power plant safety systems. However, many proposed surface modification methods require intricate steps or costly devices that may hamper the scalability of practical applications. Also, the thermal performance of modified surfaces under non-condensable gas conditions requires further investigation. Here, we propose a two-step facile surface fabrication method. Polytetrafluoroethylene is deposited on chemically decorated silver-coated surfaces to create a multi-scale, multi-material hydrophobic surface. Surface flooding is avoided at high subcooling and under various non-condensable gas concentrations. A heat transfer coefficient increment of 177.3 % at the subcooling of 35 K is achieved by maintaining stable dropwise condensation. The enhancement mechanism is attributed to improving the surface porosity. The hybrid coating layer has a smaller pore width, leading to larger Laplace pressure. As a result, condensing droplets can maintain Cassie state with a decrease of critical sliding radius and an increase of sliding frequency. Furthermore, the optimization design of the macroscale groove array for efficient droplet sliding is achieved by theoretically analyzing droplets' suction and bridging dynamic behaviors. The proposed surface modification method can benefit a broad range of condensation heat transfer and water-harvesting applications.

Abstract:Durable dropwise condensation of saturated vapor is of significance for heat transfer and energy saving in extensive industrial applications. While numerous superhydrophobic surfaces can promote steam condensation, maintaining discrete microdroplets on surfaces without the formation of a flooded filmwise condensation at high subcooling remains challenging. Here, we report the development of carbon nanotube array-embedded hierarchical composite surfaces that enable ultra-durable dropwise condensation under a wide range of subcooling (ΔTsub=8 K–38 K), which outperforms existing nanowire surfaces. This performance stems from the combined strategies of the hydrophobic nanostructures that allow efficient surface renewal and the patterned hydrophilic micro frames that protect the nanostructures and also accelerate droplet nucleation. The synergistic effects of the composite design ensure sustained Cassie wetting mode and capillarity-governed droplet mobility (Bond number<0.055) as well as the large specific volume of condensed droplets, which contributes to the enhanced condensation heat transfer. Our design provides a feasible alternative for efficiently transferring heat in a vapor environment with relatively high temperatures through the tunable multiscale morphology.

Abstract:In arid deserts, water supply is supplemented by water from fog and condensation. Once the droplets are collected, they are transported to a location where they are consumed or stored before they evaporate. Conical geometries or triangular patterns are known to create Laplace pressure gradient inside droplets which facilitates droplet transport. Water collection by fog on conical and triangular patterns have been studied. The research on the water collection by condensation exist only on flat triangular patterns. These flat surfaces have limitations for practical purposes, such as the Laplace pressure gradient does not act of droplets unless they touch the border. That is not the case in cones, which makes them superior for practical water collection. In this study, for the first time, water collection from condensation on cones have been studied. Cones of different tip angle, cone length, and surface area were used. Effect of inclination angle and array was also characterized. The results are compared to water collection by fog.

Programmable Jumping-Droplet Condensation

Abstract:Self-propelled droplet jumping during condensation has attractive prospects for energy harvesting, water collection and thermal management, but its real-life applications are greatly limited to the challenge of enabling a sustainable control on the entire droplet lifecycle. Herein, we propose a programmable jumping-droplet condensation that evolves along an artificially designed pathway without external stimulations, where the droplets can uniformly form at specific sites, spontaneously migrate and coalesce with their neighboring droplets, and jump off effectively to continuously refresh surface, significantly enhancing the heat transfer performance and durability of condensation. The programmable jumping-droplet condensation is achieved using a wedge-walled rhombus lattice structure surface inspired from the structures and functions of Namib desert beetle skin, shorebird beak and setaria viridis leaf vein. This surface integrates wetting contrast patterns with dual-gradient hierarchical structures, providing persistent and multidimensional droplet rectifications and thus realizing a sustainable control on the entire droplet lifecycle. Furthermore, we systematically investigate the morphology and behavior evolutions of droplets throughout their entire lifecycle, and fully elucidate the programmable control mechanisms of the lattice structure determined by its topology and wettability features. This work not only serves as theoretical foundations and reference framework to realize a durable jumping-droplet condensation and achieve its performance ceiling in a controlled manner, but also promotes the design and fabrication of functional structured surfaces for droplet manipulation and delivery, self-cleaning and anti-fogging/icing.

Multibioinspired Slippery Surfaces with Wettable Bump Arrays for Droplets Pumping

Abstract:Droplet manipulation is playing an important role in various fields, including scientific research, industrial production, and daily life. Here, inspired by the microstructures and functions of Namib desert beetles, Nepenthes pitcher plants, and emergent aquatic plants, we present a multibioinspired slippery surface for droplet manipulation by employing combined strategies of bottom-up colloidal self-assembly, top-down photolithography, and microstructured mold replication. The resultant multilayered hierarchical wettability surface consists of hollow hydrogel bump arrays and a lubricant-infused inverse opal film as the substrate. Based on capillary force, together with slippery properties of the substrate and wettability of the bump arrays, water droplets from all directions can be attracted to the bumps and be collected through hollow channels to a reservoir. Independent of extra energy input, droplet condensation, or coalescence, these surfaces have shown ideal droplet pumping and water collection efficiency. In particular, these slippery surfaces also exhibit remarkable features including versatility, generalization, and recyclability in practical use such as small droplet collection, which make them promising candidates for a wide range of applications.

Abstract:With the recent advances in surface fabrication technologies, condensation heat transfer has seen a renaissance. Hydrophobic and superhydrophobic surfaces have all been employed as a means to enhance condensate shedding, enabling micrometric droplet departure length scales. One of the main bottlenecks for achieving higher condensation efficiencies is the difficulty of shedding sub-10 μm droplets due to the increasing role played by surface adhesion and viscous limitations at nanometric length scales. To enable ultraefficient droplet shedding, we demonstrate hierarchical condensation on rationally designed copper oxide microhill structures covered with nanoscale features that enable large (∼100 μm) condensate droplets on top of the microstructures to coexist with smaller (<1 μm) droplets beneath. We use high-speed optical microscopy and focal plane shift imaging to show that hierarchical condensation is capable of efficiently removing sub-10-μm condensate droplets via both coalescence and divergent-track-assisted droplet self-transport toward the large suspended Cassie-Baxter (CB) state droplets, which eventually shed via classical gravitational shedding and thereby avoid vapor side limitations encountered with droplet jumping. Interestingly, experimental growth rate analysis showed that the presence of large CB droplets accelerates individual underlying droplet growth by ∼21% when compared to identically sized droplets not residing beneath CB droplets. Furthermore, the steady droplet shedding mechanism shifted the droplet size distribution toward smaller sizes, with ∼70% of observable underlying droplets having radii of ≤5 μm compared to ∼30% for droplets growing without shading. To elucidate the overall heat transfer performance, an analytical model was developed to show hierarchical condensation has the potential to break the limits of minimum droplet departure size governed by finite surface adhesion and viscous effects through the tailoring of structure length scale, coalescence, and self-transport. More importantly, abrasive wear tests showed that hierarchical condensation has good durability against mechanical damage to the surface. Our study not only demonstrates the potential of hierarchical condensation as a means to break the limitations of droplet jumping, it develops rational design guidelines for micro/nanostructured surfaces to enable excellent heat transfer performance as well as extended durability.
Multi-bioinspired and Multistructural Integrated Patterned Nanofibrous Surface for Spontaneous and Efficient Fog Collection

Abstract:Harvesting water from untapped fog is a potential and sustainable solution to freshwater shortages. However, designing high-efficiency fog collectors is still a critical and challenging task. Herein, learning from the unique microstructures and functionalities of the Namib desert beetle, honeycomb, and pitcher plant, we present a multi-bioinspired patterned fog collector with hydrophilic nanofibrous bumps and a hydrophobic slippery substrate for spontaneous and efficient fog collection. Interestingly, hydrophilic nanofibrous bumps display a honeycomb-like cellular grid structure self-assembled from electrospun nanofibers. Notably, the patterned nanofibrous fog collector exhibits superior water-collecting efficiency of 1111 mg cm–2 h–1. The hydrophilic nanofibrous bumps increase the effective fog-collecting area, and the hydrophobic slippery substrate promotes quick transport of collected water in the desired direction reducing the secondary water evaporation, finally achieving rapid directional transport of tiny droplets and high-efficiency water collection. Radiative cooling layer boosting hydrophilic-hydrophobic patterned surface for efficient water harvesting

Abstract:Water harvesting from fog is of considerable interest as a nominated solution to freshwater shortage in arid and underdeveloped regions. The unique hydrophilic and hydrophobic patterns on the dorsal surface of the Namib Desert Beetle have been shown to be an evolving and effective strategy for harvesting water from air. Illuminated by the Namib desert beetle, different elaborate patterns based on aluminum plates were established and their water harvesting efficiency was investigated from a comparative perspective. The results showed that the vein-like patterned surfaces had the highest (786.15 mg∙cm -2 h -1 ) water collection efficiency. However, the heat released during the condensation process affected the water collection rate. In order to reduce the re-evaporation rate of water droplets, a radiant cooling layer was designed on the other side of the water collection plate to release the condensation heat. The radiation cooling layer employed MgHPO 4 ꞏ0.78H 2 O as the functional particle and P(VDF-HFP) as the adhesive. Benefitted from radiative cooling layer, the water collection efficiency could be increased by 198.51 mg∙cm -2 h -1 . The water collection material with double-sided function structure has low preparation costs and green raw materials. This work provides an effective way to develop key materials with freshwater harvesting capabilities.

Abstract:Former studies have found that water droplets on the rice leaves exhibit anisotropic sliding behavior, which is mainly caused by the anisotropic groove‐like surface microstructures. Similar groove‐like surface microstructures and anisotropic sliding behavior of water droplets can also be found on some other plants, such as the reed leaves. In this paper, biomimetic groove‐like surface microstructures are fabricated on copper surfaces by femtosecond laser micromachining. Thanks to the flexibility of this method, the period and height of the periodic micro‐grooves can be precisely controlled, and the nanoscale surface roughness can also be regulated. The influences of these surface morphologies on the wetting state and anisotropic sliding behavior of water droplets are studied systematically, and theoretic analyses are also conducted. Our results prove that the anisotropic sliding behavior is mainly decided by the wetting state of external water droplets. Besides, plenty of surface nanostructures have no benefits to the anisotropic sliding behavior of surface water droplets.

Abstract:Atmospheric water harvesting is an emerging strategy for decentralized and potable water supplies. However, water nucleation and microdroplet coalescence on condensing surfaces often result in surface flooding owing to the lack of a sufficient directional driving force for shedding. Herein, inspired by the fascinating properties of lizards and catfish, we present a condensing surface with engineered hydrogel patterns that enable rapid and sustainable water harvesting through the directional pumping and drag-reduced sliding of water droplets. The movement of microscale condensed droplets is synergistically driven by the surface energy gradient and difference in Laplace pressure induced by the arch hydrogel patterns. Meanwhile, the superhydrophilic hydrogel surface can strongly bond inner-layer water molecules to form a lubricant film that reduces drag and facilitates the sliding of droplets off the condensing surface. Enhanced Moisture Condensation on Hierarchical Structured Superhydrophobic–Hydrophilic Patterned Surfaces

Abstract:Patterned surfaces combining hydrophobic and hydrophilic properties show great promise in moisture condensation; however, a comprehensive understanding of the multiscale interfacial behavior and the further controlling method is still lacking. In this paper, we studied the moisture condensation on a hybrid superhydrophobic-hydrophilic surface with hierarchical structures from micro- to nanoscale. For the first time, we demonstrated the effects of wettability difference and microstructure size on the final condensation efficiency. By optimizing the wettability difference, sub-millimeter pattern width, and microstructure size, maximum 90% enhancement of the condensation rate was achieved as compared with the superhydrophobic surface at a subcooling of 13 K. We also demonstrated the enhanced condensation mechanism by a detailed analysis of the condensation process. Our work proposed effective and systematical methods for controlling and optimizing moisture condensation on the patterned surfaces and shed light on application integration of such promising functional surfaces.

Abstract:Hydrophobic (HPo) surfaces for atmospheric water harvesting applications require sophisticated wettability and microstructure patterns, which suffer from high cost and low durability against severe mechanical and environmental degradations. Inspired by the leaves of Welwitschia mirabilis, a long lifespan desert-living plant, we present a robust superhydrophilic (SHPi) surface design which is capable of enhancing both dew condensation and fog capture. The surface consists of a parallel-aligned millimetric wavy topography on top of which random nanostructures are grown. By studying the liquid dynamics, we have shown a unique mechanism of water transport on the SHPi wavy surface by droplet splitting and Laplace pressure gradient. It has been revealed that the efficient water transport on the SHPi wavy surface synergistically interacts with the enhanced diffusion flux of water vapor on the convex regions and significantly improves the efficiency of filmwise condensation. We have further demonstrated that wavy features enhance the probability of fog droplet collisions by disturbing the air flow and increasing the mean free path of fog droplets.
