Abstract:Superhydrophobicity has received significant attention over the past three decades owing to its significant potential in self-cleaning, anti-icing and drag reduction surfaces, energy-harvesting devices, antibacterial coatings, and enhanced heat transfer applications. Superhydrophobicity can be obtained via the roughening of an intrinsically hydrophobic surface, the creation of a re-entrant geometry, or by the roughening of a hydrophilic surface followed by a conformal coating of a hydrophobic material. Intrinsically hydrophobic surfaces have poor thermophysical properties, such as thermal conductivity, and thus are not suitable for heat transfer applications. Re-entrant geometries, although versatile in applications where droplets are deposited, break down during spatially random nucleation and flood the surface. Chemical functionalization of rough metallic substrates, although promising, is not utilized because of the poor durability of conformal hydrophobic coatings. Here we develop a radically different approach to achieve stable superhydrophobicity. By utilizing laser processing and thermal oxidation of copper (Cu) to create a high surface energy hierarchical copper oxide (CuO), followed by repeatable and passive atmospheric adsorption of hydrophobic volatile organic compounds (VOCs), we show that stable superhydrophobicity with apparent advancing contact angles ≈160° and contact angle hysteresis as low as ≈20° can be achieved. We exploit the structure length scale and structure geometry-dependent VOC adsorption dynamics to rationally design CuO nanowires with enhanced superhydrophobicity. To gain an understanding of the VOC adsorption physics, we utilized X-ray photoelectron and ion mass spectroscopy to identify the chemical species deposited on our surfaces in two distinct locations: Urbana, IL, United States and Beijing, China. To test the stability of the atmosphere-mediated superhydrophobic surfaces during heterogeneous nucleation, we used high-speed optical microscopy to demonstrate the occurrence of dropwise condensation and stable coalescence-induced droplet jumping. Our work not only provides rational design guidelines for developing passively durable superhydrophobic surfaces with excellent flooding-resistance and self-healing capability but also sheds light on the key role played by the atmosphere in governing wetting.
Impaired Lung Dendritic Cell Migration and T Cell Stimulation Induced by Immunostimulatory Oligonucleotides Contribute to Reduced Allergic Airway Inflammation1

Abstract:CpG-containing oligonucleotides (CpG) have been shown to reduce key features of allergic airway inflammation in mouse models. Given the inhibitory effects of CpG treatment on Ag presentation of subsequently encountered Ags via MHC class I and II molecules by dendritic cells (DC), we hypothesized that intranasal CpG treatment would lead to reduced Ag-specific T cell stimulation in the lung-draining lymph nodes, thereby reducing the inflammatory response in sensitized mice. Intranasal CpG administration led to phenotypic maturation of lung and mediastinal lymph node DC as determined by expression of MHC class II, CD80, and CD86. This was accompanied by a significant reduction in the proliferation of adoptively transferred Ag-specific CD4+ and CD8+ T cells in mediastinal lymph nodes, when CpG was given before inhalative OVA challenges. DC obtained from mediastinal lymph nodes of CpG-treated mice before OVA inhalation led to reduced T cell stimulation via MHC class I and II molecules. In addition, CpG diminished airway eosinophilia and pulmonary infiltration after sensitization or following adoptive transfer of Ag-specific Th2 cells. These results were explained by reduced CCL21 expression and inhibition of lung DC migration following CpG administration, which could be restored by transfer of bone marrow-derived DC, because CpG had no major impact on the constitutive MHC class II Ag presentation of protein-derived Ag by lung tissue-derived DC. We conclude that CpG treatment can effectively impair the DC-mediated Ag transport from the lungs to the lymph nodes, resulting in reduced T cell activation and blunted airway inflammation.
Achieving of Bionic Super-Hydrophobicity by Electrodepositing Nano-Ni-pyramids on the Picosecond Laser-Ablated Micro-Cu-cone Surface

Abstract:The fabrication of a bionic super-hydrophobic metallic surface without any low-surface-energy modification is investigated, in which picosecond laser ablation, electropolishing and electrodeposition are used sequentially. The micro-cone structure is formed via laser ablation, and then the nano-pyramid structure is electrodeposited on the micro-cone structure, resulting in a hierarchical structure that is important for achieving super-hydrophobicity on an intrinsically hydrophilic material surface. In this study, the surface morphology and material removal mechanism are discussed with respect to the laser-ablated surface and the subsequent electropolished/electrodeposited surfaces. The condensation experiments results show that both types of surfaces are associated with relatively high contact angles (CAs) at normal temperatures, and the CAs are 147 degrees and 160 degrees, respectively. However, the CA on the laser-ablated surfaces at low temperatures decreases to as less as 107 degrees, which may be owing to the easy transition from Cassie state to a metastable state or even the Wenzel state, leading to a degraded hydrophobic surface. By contrast, the CA on the sequentially processed surfaces still maintains at 150 degrees, which should be attributed to the densely distributed nano-scale structures. The sequentially processed surfaces also show excellent long-term durability. Furthermore, this technique has been employed for fabricating super-hydrophobic surfaces with CM > 151 degrees and the sliding angles (SAs) < 8 degrees on the inclined surfaces with the inclination angle alpha < 30 degrees. Overall, the technique presented in this study supply a practical and reliable method for realizing the stable Cassie state and hence super-hydrophobicity on metallic surfaces.
Micro/Nano Hierarchical Crater-Like Structure Surface With Mechanical Durability and Low-Adhesion for Anti-Icing/Deicing

Abstract:Superhydrophobic surfaces have attracted significant attention for their ability to prevent ice formation and facilitate deicing without requiring external energy. However, these surfaces are often vulnerable to damage from external forces, leading to functional failure due to poor mechanical stability, which limits their widespread use. Drawing inspiration from the hierarchical groove of rose petals and the micropapillae of lotus leaves, a simple laser-based method is proposed to create a superhydrophobic surface with a micro/nano hierarchical crater-like structure (HCLS). To enhance the surface, boiling water treatment is applied to induce dense nanostructures, resulting in an optimal contact angle (CA) of 162° and a desirable sliding angle (SA) of 2.0°. The initial ice adhesion strength of HCLS is as low as 1.4 kPa and remains below 10 kPa even after 300 cm sandpaper abrasion. Furthermore, the HCLS demonstrates excellent mechanical durability, maintaining its performance under conditions that simulate the continuous impact of water and sand in extreme weather. This approach offers an innovative design concept that has the potential to advance the development of anti-icing and deicing surfaces for future aircraft.

Robust Micro-Nanostructured Superhydrophobic Surfaces for Long-Term Dropwise Condensation

Abstract:Design of hierarchical micromorphology represents an important strategy for developing functional surfaces but has yet to be achieved for promising long-term dropwise condensation. Herein, micropapillaes overlaid with nanograss were created to enhance dropwise condensation. By analyzing the nucleation and evolution of the condensate droplets, we elucidated that these hierarchical micro-nanostructures topologized tapered gaps, which produced upward pressure, to achieve spontaneous dislodging of condensate microdroplet out of gaps, and then to trigger microdroplet navigation before finally departing from the surface by coalescence-induced jumping. The high mobility of condensate delayed flooding and contributed to a very high heat transfer coefficient of 218 kW·m–2·K–1. Moreover, these micropapillaes served as forts that protected the nanograss from being destroyed, resulting in improved mechanical and chemical robustness. Our work proposed new examples of topology creation for long-term dropwise condensation heat transfer and shed light on application integration of such promising functional surfaces.. Abstract:The potential applications of superamphiphobic surfaces are widespread and attractive. The design of re-entrant structures is crucial to superamphiphobic surfaces. However, both the existing two strategies to design re-entrant structures face problems. Here a creative strategy to design 3D re-entrant nanostructures on ordered micro-structures is proposed. A novel "Top-down" and "Bottom-up" hybrid method consisting of ultrafast laser ablation and chemical bath processing is used to fabricate hierarchical surfaces with 3D re-entrant CuO nanograss on Cu microcones. Thanks to the low surface energy from modification with perfluorodecyltrimethoxysilane and plenty of re-entrant geometries provided by the 3D distributed nanograss structures, the hierarchical surfaces show outstanding superamphiphobicity with water and low surface tension liquid like dodecane. The influence of the nanograss types and the microcone distribution on the superamphiphobicity are systematically studied. Besides, the microcones/nanograss hierarchical superamphiphobic surfaces show excellent long-term durability, high temperature durability and comprehensive mechanical durability, are promising for practically applications.

Abstract:<p>Nature gives us a large number of inspirations in designing functional materials. Many plant leaves with self-cleaning properties are ubiquitous in nature. These plants have hierarchical structures, which have extreme repellency to liquids and have considerable technical potential in various applications. Herein, we present a method for fabricating bionic taro leaf surfaces by direct laser interference lithography (DLIL) and hydrothermal treatment. The micro-pillar array structure (MPA) was fabricated by DLIL, and a layer of nano-grass structure (NG) was grown on it by hydrothermal treatment. Experiments indicate that the hierarchical composite structures not only have a satisfactory superhydrophobic function with the apparent contact angle (CA) of 172° and sliding angle (SA) of 4°, but also have a strong anti-icing ability with the delay time (DT) of 3723 s. The method is simple and high-efficient for fabricating bionic self-cleaning and anti-icing surfaces.</p>

Abstract:<p>The self-cleaning and de-icing phenomenon is magical in nature, and of practical importance in daily life and industrial activities. The paper studies the inclined impact behaviour of drop on the various surfaces, i.e., micronano hierarchy and multiscale artificial compound eye (ACE). The droplet experiences first spreading, then retract, and finally detach from the surface with different contact time, which results from the different solid fraction tuned by chemical time. Moreover, the anti-icing property of the hierarchical surfaces was further demonstrated and discussed. Results show that the hierarchical surfaces endow excellent anti-icing properties compared with the planar surface. For reaction time of 40 min, the hierarchy has delay time of 800 s, which almost three times the planar surface. Further, curved ACE was fabricated by laser swelling, gas-assisted deformation and chemical growth. The nanohairs was fully covered on the surface of ACE. The imaging property was tested in the experiment. The nanohairs greatly enhance the hydrophobicity compared with the regular ACE. The contact angles for regular ACE and ACE with nanohairs was 105°and 160°, respectively. Besides the static hydrophobic performance, the dynamic dewetting behavior is also tested. For regular ACE, the contact droplets stick to the surface; while for ACE with nanohairs, the droplets fully detach the curved surface with a contact time of ∼ 8.75 ms for Weber number (We) of 66. These findings are believed to provide guideline for preparation of surfaces for both self-cleaning and anti-icing purposes and paves the way for practical applications of the ACE.</p>

Abstract:The ice formed on aircraft as a result of the freezing of supercooled large droplets (SLD) presents a significant safety risk to flight safety. Mitigating or inhibiting SLD icing has attracted considerable attention from researchers. Although superhydrophobic surfaces have demonstrated potential in reducing contact time to achieve anti-icing, their effectiveness has been limited by the issue of droplets eventually staying and freezing on the horizontal surface after bouncing. To address this limitation, droplets breaking up and flying away from the surface is an effective method of preventing them from adhering to the surface, thereby enhancing the anti-icing performance of superhydrophobic surfaces. This study observed that droplets of high Weber numbers impacting barnyard grass break up into smaller droplets through liquid column disintegration and quickly fly away from the leaf. This behavior is attributed to the anisotropic spreading and retraction of the liquid film caused by the surface structure, resulting in the formation of a scattering liquid column that is more unstable than that of a droplet of the same volume. Additionally, SLD impacting a bionic surface inspired by barnyard grass also break up and fly away, leaving no ice on the bionic superhydrophobic surface, whereas those impacting a smooth superhydrophobic surface retract into spherical droplets that eventually freeze on the surface. This research contributes to the advancement of SLD anti-icing studies and provides a strategy and bionic structure to enhance anti-icing performance further.

Abstract:Superhydrophobic functional surfaces are widely used in medical treatment, pipeline transportation, and ship corrosion protection and have great potential in the field of anti-icing. Ultrafast laser-induced plasma micromachining (LIPMM) combined with a chemical modification of a fluoroalkyl low surface-energy substance (Novec) was used to fabricate superhydrophobic surfaces with periodic layered micro-nano arrays on Ti6Al4V. The wettability, droplet collision behavior and wear resistance of surfaces with different physical and chemical properties were analyzed. In terms of static anti-icing, based on the classical nucleation theory, the icing-delay performance of different surfaces was analyzed. Ice adhesion strength and frosting properties were also studied. It was found that the micro-nano structure surface fabricated by LIPMM had strong hydrophobicity (contact angle of 164°, roll-off angle of 1.0°), high icing delay time (3072 s, 4 μL of water droplet on the surface at −10 °C), low ice adhesion strength (38.2 kPa), and better durability. Additionally, the droplets bounced off this surface after colliding at different angles (0°, 5°, 10°, and 20°). This study provides a feasible solution for fabricating anti-icing surfaces on Ti6A14V.

Abstract:Anti-icing/de-icing surfaces are dispensable in reducing accidents and economic losses caused by accumulated ice and frost on outdoor facilities in cold and humid environments. In this work, a low-cost, reproducible process was presented to fabricate superhydrophobic anti-icing/de-icing surfaces. For this purpose, concave micro-structures were firstly created on the mold steel surface using femtosecond laser machining, and then the corresponding convex micro-structures were prepared on the surface of a silicone rubber (SR) composite mixed with multi-wall carbon nanotubes (CNTs) using hot embossing. Thanks to the presence of unique micro-scale peak-ridge structures, the as-prepared SR/CNTs surfaces possess superhydrophobic characteristic. Long icing delay time was endowed by the large volume of air pockets inside micro-structures, and the icing time was significantly extended from 67 to 416 s, which is ascribed to the greatly inhibited heat transfer between the droplet and the surface. Moreover, the SR/CNTs surface had excellent photothermal conversion capability with the presence of photothermal particles CNTs, and the temperature of the surface increased rapidly from 21.6 to 86.1 °C in 5 min under a standard sunlight irradiation. In addition, the SR/CNTs surface also possesses superior photothermal defrosting and de-icing performance as the ice and frost on the surface can be quickly melted under a standard sunlight intensity irradiation and the de-icing rate is up to 0.92 mg/s. Finally, the good reusability of the mold steel and the resistance to mechanical wear and chemical corrosion of superhydrophobic SR/CNTs surface found in this work make the proposed approach promising for industrial mass production and anti-icing/de-icing applications in harsh environments.

Trifolium repens L.-Like Periodic Micronano Structured Superhydrophobic Surface with Ultralow Ice Adhesion for Efficient Anti-Icing/Deicing

Abstract:Wind turbine blades are often covered with ice and snow, which inevitably reduces their power generation efficiency and lifetime. Recently, a superhydrophobic surface has attracted widespread attention due to its potential values in anti-icing/deicing. However, the superhydrophobic surface can easily transition from Cassie-Baxter to Wenzel at low temperature, limiting its wide applications. Herein, inspired by the excellent water resistance and cold tolerance of Trifolium repens L. endowed by its micronano structure and low surface energy, a fresh structure was prepared by combining femtosecond laser processing technology and a boiling water treatment method. The prepared icephobic surface aluminum alloy (ISAl) mainly consists of a periodic microcrater array, nonuniform microclusters, and irregular nanosheets. This three-scale structure greatly promotes the stability of the Cassie-Baxter state. The critical Laplace pressure of ISAl is up to 1437 Pa, and the apparent water contact angle (CA) is higher than 150° at 0 °C. Those two factors contribute to its excellent anti-icing and deicing performances. The results show that the static icing delay time reaches 2577 s, and the ice adhesion strength is only 1.60 kPa. Furthermore, the anti-icing and deicing abilities of the proposed ISAl were examined under the environment of low temperature and high relative humidity to demonstrate its effectiveness. The dynamic anti-icing time of ISAl in extreme environments is up to 5 h, and ice can quickly fall with a speed of 34 r/min when it is in a horizontal rotational motion. Finally, ISAl has excellent reusability and mechanical durability, with the ice adhesion strength still being less than 6 kPa and the CA greater than 150° after 15 cycles of icing-deicing tests. The proposed structure would offer a promising strategy for the efficient anti-icing and deicing of wind turbine blades.
Triple-Scale Superhydrophobic Surface with Excellent Anti-Icing and Icephobic Performance via Ultrafast Laser Hybrid Fabrication.

Abstract:Passive anti-icing or icephobic superhydrophobic surfaces have attracted great interest due to their potential multifaceted implications for the prevention and/or easy removal of undesired ice in many applications. However, a superhydrophobic surface with both excellent anti-icing and icephobic performances has rarely been reported due to difficulties in sustaining a good Cassie state stability. This is the case especially under high humidity and freezing environment conditions. In the present study, a new triple-scale micro/nanostructured superhydrophobic surface with both excellent anti-icing and icephobic properties has been designed via a hybrid method, combining ultrafast laser ablation and chemical oxidation. The novel surface structure is composed of periodical microcone arrays covered with densely grown nanograsses and dispersedly distributed microflowers. This surface exhibits an excellent Cassie state stability with its critical Laplace pressure reaching up to 1450 Pa, which is essential for good anti-icing and icephobic performances. The anti-icing feature of the prepared superhydrophobic surface is achieved by a rapid rolling-off of the impacting droplets. Moreover, an excellent resistance to the impact of high humidity has been achieved via hierarchical condensation, coalescence-induced jumping, and upward moving. A good delay of the heterogeneous nucleation at the solid-liquid interface under freezing condition has been registered as well, due to the presence of stable air pockets within the surface structures. In addition, the ice adhesion strength of the prepared superhydrophobic surface can be as low as 1.7 kPa, which is the lowest value when compared with the state-of-the-art superhydrophobic surfaces. Such a low ice adhesion strength allows the ice to be easily removed by its own weight and demonstrates an excellent icephobic performance. The repeated icing-deicing tests indicate a decent deicing robustness of the synthesized superhydrophobic surface. Thus, this triple-scale superhydrophobic surface exhibits a good anti-icing and icephobic performance with an excellent Cassie state stability, high humidity resistance, and good deicing durability. We hypothesize that the proposed fabrication strategy and associated basic findings will shed new light on the design of robust ice-resistant superhydrophobic surfaces and contribute to a better understanding of the relationship between superhydrophobicity and ice resistance.

Abstract:Precisely controlling the directional motion trajectories of droplets on anisotropic 3D functional surfaces has great application potential in self-cleaning, drug delivery, and droplet power generation, but it also faces huge challenges. Herein, inspired by the microcone structure in the heart of sunflowers, a nanoneedle-modified microcone array surface (NMAS) is reported. The surface is created using a combination of nanosecond laser direct engraving and electroforming and is subsequently fluorinated. Through programmable control of the laser spot, the geometric parameters and inclination angle of the microcone can be quickly and finely adjusted, thereby achieving precise control of the droplet bouncing trajectory. The results show that droplets can achieve programmable multiple bouncing behaviors on patterned functional surfaces, including gravity-defying hopping and directional water transport. It is worth noting that this functional surface has delayed freezing and anti-freezing effects. Furthermore, this functional surface has a wide range of potential applications, including surface self-cleaning, droplet capture, and droplet-based chemical microreactions, especially in the field of anti-icing operations. This opens up a new way for the directional transport of droplets on biomimetic functional surfaces.

Abstract:Micro/nanostructures have garnered significant attention and widespread applications in areas such as photocatalysis, coated fabrics, microchips, and sensors. However, high-resolution and multifunctional micro/nanostructures fabrication remains a great challenge. In this work, a novel self-assembly-femtosecond laser processing for the regular micro squares and nano bumps surface on steel substrates is proposed, and a great potential in the field of anti-icing/de-icing and self-cleaning is demonstrated. The surface tension gradient-driven liquid-air self-assembly provides a silica microsphere monolayer, while the post-femtosecond laser process can give precise micro/nano decoration. We systematically explore the impact of laser repetition frequency, scanning speed, and laser incident power on the size and shape of micro/nano decorations that have been studied. The different performances of self-cleaning effects, ice adhesion, and the photothermal de-icing capability due to the change in surface wettability have been demonstrated. This research shows a new pathway for the creation of smart micro/nanostructures surface which possess stable super hydrophilic and highly adhesive superhydrophobic properties, as well as high abrasion resistance. The discovery achieves a suitable blend of multiple functions on the surface of a single material, which can be applied to various surface engineering fields.
Microcones and Nanograss: Toward Mechanically Robust Superhydrophobic Surfaces

Abstract:We describe the generation of mechanically robust superhydrophobic surfaces, which carry a hierarchical roughness that is composed of silicon microcones and silicon nanograss. Both micro and nanostructures were fabricated using mask-free dry etching processes. The microcones were obtained utilizing a cryogenic deep reactive ion etching (DRIE) process run in the overpassivation regime. By varying process parameters, surfaces with different microcones geometries and densities were achieved. The nanograss was fabricated using a modified DRIE process with alternating etching and passivation cycles ('BOSCH process'). All surfaces were covered with a layer of a fluorinated film so that superhydrophobic structures resulted. Depending on microcone geometry and density, the advancing contact angle ranged between 170° and 180°, and roll-off angles of 10 μL drops between 30' (0.5°) and 6° were observed. The samples were exposed to varying shear loads, and the changes in the morphology were recorded by using electron microscopy. The wetting angles of the mechanically challenged surfaces were recorded and correlated with the mechanical properties of the samples.

Abstract:Superhydrophobic surfaces have been attracting considerable attention due to potential applications in self-cleaning, anti-icing, water/oil separation, drag reduction, water collection, etc. However, to date, except for a few textile surfaces and coating products, only a limited number of superhydrophobic applications have been commercialized. The main reasons for the limited number of applications are attributed to the poor Cassie state stability and inadequate mechanical durability of superhydrophobic surfaces. Although numerous efforts have been invested to improve the Cassie state stability or mechanical durability of such surfaces, the surfaces with both acceptable Cassie state stability and mechanical durability have been rarely reported. In the present study, a 3D hierarchical structure composed of nanorods on periodically structured microcones was fabricated on a copper surface by an ultrafast laser–chemical hybrid method. The effect of microcone heights of the proposed structures on the Cassie state stability and mechanical durability was investigated. It is demonstrated that Cassie state stability of the manufactured surfaces could be improved efficiently by increasing the microcone height. However, when the height of the microcone gets to a certain magnitude (e.g., 50 μm in present study), a further increase of microcone height has a little influence on the stability of the Cassie state. The mechanical durability study shows that the superhydrophobic surface with the optimal microcone height could withstand 500 tape peeling cycles in a tape peeling test, 4 abrasion cycles in a linear abrasion test, and 35 min of water flow impact, before the contact angle decreases to 150° and the sliding angles increase to 10°, indicating good mechanical durability. Our proposed structures with both great Cassie state stability and mechanical durability could be promising candidates for many potential applications such as for solar cells, infrared sensors, and some space-related equipment, among others.

Abstract:Tissue factor (TF) is a transmembrane glycoprotein that initiates the coagulation cascade. Because of the potential role of TF in mediating arterial thrombosis, we have examined its expression in human aortic and coronary artery smooth muscle cells (SMC). TF mRNA and protein were induced in SMC by a variety of growth agonists. Exposure to PDGF AA or BB for 30 min provided all of the necessary signals for induction of TF mRNA and protein. This result was consistent with nuclear runoff analyses, demonstrating that PDGF-induced TF transcription occurred within 30 min. A newly developed assay involving binding of digoxigenin-labeled FVIIa (DigVIIa) and digoxigenin-labeled Factor X (DigX) was used to localize cellular TF. By light and confocal microscopy, prominent TF staining was seen in the perinuclear cytoplasm beginning 2 h after agonist treatment and persisting for 10-12 h. Surface TF activity, measured on SMC monolayers under flow conditions, increased transiently, peaking 4-6 h after agonist stimulation and returning to baseline within 16 h. Peak surface TF activity was only approximately 20% of total TF activity measured in cell lysates. Surface TF-blocking experiments demonstrated that the remaining TF was found as encrypted surface TF, and also in an intracellular pool. The relatively short-lived surface expression of TF may be critical for limiting the thrombotic potential of intact SMC exposed to growth factor stimulation. In contrast, the encrypted surface and intracellular pools may provide a rich source of TF under conditions associated with SMC damage, such as during atherosclerotic plaque rupture or balloon arterial injury.

Abstract:Superhydrophobic surfaces have been intensively investigated in recent years. However, their durability remains a major challenge before superhydrophobic surfaces can be employed in practice. Although various works have focused on overcoming this bottleneck, no single surface has ever been able to achieve the comprehensive durability (including tangential abrasion durability, dynamic impact durability and adhesive durability) required by stringent industrial requirements. Within the hierarchical structures developed for superhydrophobicity in typical plants or animals by natural evolution, microstructures usually provide mechanical stability, strength and flexibility to protect functional nanostructures to enable high durability. However, this mechanism for achieving high durability is rarely studied or reported. We employed an ultrafast laser to fabricate micro/nanohierarchical structures on metal surfaces with tunable micro-cones and produced abundant nanostructures. We then systematically investigated their comprehensive mechanical durability by fully utilizing the protective effect of the microstructures on the functional nanostructures via the tunable design of micro-cones. We confirm that the height and spatial period of the microstructures were crucial for the tangential abrasion durability and dynamic impact durability, respectively. We finally fabricated optimized superhydrophobic tungsten hierarchical surfaces, which could withstand 70 abrasion cycles, 28 min of solid particle impact or 500 tape peeling cycles to retain contact angles of greater than 150° and sliding angles of less than 20°, which demonstrated exceptional comprehensive durability. The comprehensive durability, in particular the dynamic impact durability and adhesive durability, are among the best published results. This research clarifies the mechanism whereby the microstructures effectively protected the functional nanostructures to achieve high durability of the superhydrophobic surfaces and is promising for improving the durability of superhydrophobic surfaces and thus for practical applications.
