Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) pollution is an emerging global environmental concern. Considering the high fraction of time people spend indoors, the human population can be directly exposed to this contamination through indoor dust. This preliminary study evaluates MPs' abundance and human health risk assessment in the deposited indoor dust. A total of forty dust samples (n = 20) were collected from homes in two different cities (Pakistan) in steel mesh pouches using the vacuum cleaner. The identification and quantification of MPs were conducted with a stereo microscope, whereas the qualitative assessment was performed with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The US EPA parameters to calculate the human health risk assessment were used to determine MPs' risk per-day/month/year. Overall, microfibers were the dominant category, followed by microfilms, micro-fragments, and nurdles. The chemical categorization of MPs was revealed as polyester, polyethylene, copolymers of polypropylene, and polyurethane. In Lahore, an average abundance of 241.45 (items/m2) MPs were observed compared to Sahiwal, with 162.1 (items/m2). More than 90% of the identified MPs were microfibers, with higher detection frequency and abundance in Lahore than Sahiwal. The human health risk assessment revealed high exposure risk because of indoor MPs. Moreover, toddlers were more vulnerable as compared to adults at both low and high exposure risk scenarios. There is an imminent need to conduct in-depth risk assessment focusing on the respirable fraction of MPs.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are a group of emerging contaminants that attracted increasing scientific and societal attention over the past decade. So far, most studies on MPs focus on characterizing their occurrence, fate, and impact in the aquatic environment. In contrast, very little is known about the magnitude, patterns, and associated risks of human exposure to MPs, particularly indoors, despite people spending most of their time indoors. This paper provides the first study hitherto of MPs in indoor air via both active and passive sampling from 30 homes and 30 workplaces in Birmingham, UK. The average concentration of MPs in the active air samples was 15.6 ± 5.4 MP/m3 in homes and 13.1 ± 6.5 MP/m3 in workplaces. For atmospheric deposition samples (passive sampling), the average MPs concentrations were 3735 ± 1343 MP/m2/day in homes and 3177 ± 1860 MP/m2/day in workplaces. Mean concentrations of MPs in UK homes were significantly higher (P<0.05) than those in workplaces for both active and passive air samples. This was mainly driven by carpeted floors in all the studied homes, while 13 of the sampled workplaces were uncarpeted. MPs concentrations in atmospheric deposition (passive) samples were significantly higher (P < 0.05) than airborne (active) MPs samples in the studied microenvironments. Nonetheless, a strong correlation (P < 0.01) was observed between the concentrations of MPs measured by active and passive sampling, indicating common sources of MPs to both active and passive samples collected from the same microenvironments. In terms of morphology, fibres were the dominant shape of MPs, followed by fragments, constituting together ≥90% of the identified MPs in all samples, with the remaining minor percent made up by foams. Airborne MPs were dominated by particles in the size range (10-25 μm), and the particles abundance decreased with increasing particle size. MPs in atmospheric fallout particles, were dominated by larger particles (50-100 μm) with lower contribution from smaller particles (10-25 μm) compared to airborne particles. Nonetheless, combined with the predominance of fibres, this raises concern over the risk from inhalation exposure because MPs fibres in the detected size ranges were observed to penetrate into human lung tissue. PET and PVC were the most abundant polymer types in the studied samples followed by PP and PE. The average daily inhalation exposure of UK adults and toddlers was estimated at 3.0 and 6.3 MP/kg body weight/day, respectively. The higher inhalation exposure of UK toddlers raises concern due to their incompletely developed immune and nervous systems.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are an emerging global concern due to severe toxicological risks for ecosystems and public health. Therefore, this is the first study in Bangladesh to assess MP pollution and its associated risks for ecosystems and human health in the outdoor urban environment using machine learning and multivariate approaches. The occurrences of MPs in the urban road dust were 52.76 ± 20.24 particles/g with high diversity, where fiber shape (77%), 0.1–0.5 mm size MPs (75%), blue color (26%), and low-density polyethylene (24%) polymer was the dominating MPs category. Pollution load index value (1.28–4.42), showed severe pollution by MPs. Additionally, the contamination factor (1.00–5.02), and Nemerow pollution index (1.38–5.02), indicate moderate to severe MP pollution. The identified polymers based on calculated potential ecological risk (2248.52 ± 1792.79) and polymer hazard index (814.04 ± 346.15) showed very high and high risks, respectively. The occurrences of MPs could effectively be predicted by random forest, and support random vector machine, where EC, salinity, pH, OC, and texture classes were the influencing parameters. Considering the human health aspect, children and adults could be acutely exposed to 19259.68 and 5777.90 MP particles/ year via oral ingestion. Monte-Carlo-based polymers associated cancer risk assessment results indicate moderate risk and high risk for adults and children, respectively, where children were more vulnerable than adults for MP pollution risks. Overall assessment mentioned that Dhaka was the most polluted division among the other divisions.

Abstract:Atmospheric microplastics (MPs) deposition in indoor and outdoor environments has yet to gain significant attention in Bangkok, Thailand. Outdoor MPs deposition is a potentially severe issue as it can contaminate agricultural land, water bodies, and water treatment plants. Similarly, indoor MPs can enter the human body during inhalation and ingestion as an individual spends most of the time indoors. This study employed a passive sampling method, followed by digestion, density separation, Nile red (NR) tagging, and micro-Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis to identify the abundance and characteristics of MPs in indoor and outdoor (urban, semi-urban, and industrial) air in Bangkok, Thailand. This study revealed an average indoor MPs deposition of 154 ± 62 particles/square meter/day (p/m 2 /d). Fragments (68%) were the most abundant shape indoors. Polypropylene (PP) was the most common polymer type. Indoor MPs likely come from plastic items, such as packaging, bags, and containers/bottles, during tearing and opening and polymer-based paints and coatings due to aging. Similarly, the average MPs deposition rate was 103 ± 52, 238 ± 109, and 263 ± 128 p/m 2 /d at Chulalongkorn (urban), SIIT (semi-urban), and Bangkadi (industrial) sites, respectively. Fragments dominated other shapes in all the outdoor sites. PP was the polymer most repeatedly observed at Chulalongkorn, while polyethylene (PE) was the most common polymer at SIIT and Bangkadi. It is speculated that environmental degradation of plastic wastes (packaging, containers, and bags) and polymer-based paints and coatings on infrastructures add MPs to the atmosphere.

Abstract:The global challenge of air pollution's adverse health effects, particularly highlighted in Dhaka, Bangladesh, underscores the significant impact of particulate matter (PM) exposure. This study aims to assess the current sources of PM2.5 emissions in different microenvironments around Dhaka and explore potential risk factors to assess individual 24 h exposure to PM2.5. A commercially available low-cost sensor was utilized for collecting data for 15 days under various environmental conditions. The average concentrations for PM1.0, PM2.5, and PM10 were 37.05 ± 24.36 μg/m3, 57.22 ± 40.75 μg/m3, and 69.22 ± 48.46 μg/m3, respectively. The highest PM2.5 concentrations were found (78.87 ± 53.69 μg/m3) in restaurants and residences (62.35 ± 41.70 μg/m3), while air-conditioned shopping malls exhibited the lowest concentrations (20.08 ± 15.57 μg/m3). Driving with windows closed and utilizing air conditioning resulted in a 33–52% reduction in PM2.5 concentrations inside the car. The Hazard Quotient (HQ) for PM2.5 varied by location, with a low level observed in the air-conditioned locations and a moderate level observed in restaurants and non-air-conditioned shopping malls. The significance of this study lies in its potential to inform public health strategies and urban planning initiatives aimed at reducing air pollution exposure in highly populated cities like Dhaka.

Abstract:The recent detection of microplastics (MPs) in a large number of commercially important food items and beverages, including tap water, has drawn significant attention because of direct exposure and negative health effects on humans. Nevertheless, there is insufficient information on microplastic contamination in the tap water of developing countries. In the present study, we primarily analyzed supplied tap water samples from four major cities in Bangladesh to determine and characterize MPs using a stereomicroscope and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Several indices were employed to calculate human health exposures to microplastics. MPs were found in all of the water samples tested, with an overall mean of 35.33 ± 19.55 particles/L. The results of this study diverge from those of comparable research conducted globally, revealing that tap water in Bangladesh exhibited higher levels of contamination compared to other nations. MPs were found in three different shapes (fibers, fragments, and films), with fibers dominating the samples (96.2%), and 98.1% of the microplastics were less than 0.5 mm in size. Six different colors of MPs were observed, and transparent particles were dominant (63.9% of all observed MPs). FTIR infrared spectrum analysis revealed two major types of polymers: low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE). The projected daily consumption of microplastics was determined to be 2.65 particles per person per day, raising potential concerns for human health. The findings show that the treatment process of the water supply system is inadequate. Additionally, the sources of microplastics in tap water may come from where the water was collected for treatment and may be linked to a variety of anthropogenic activities, such as urbanization, sewage discharge, industrial waste disposal, and runoff from catchment areas.
Microplastic Contamination of Non-Mulched Agricultural Soils in Bangladesh: Detection, Characterization, Source Apportionment and Probabilistic Health Risk Assessment

Abstract:Microplastic contamination in agricultural soil is an emerging problem worldwide as it contaminates the food chain. Therefore, this research investigated the distribution of microplastics (MPs) in agricultural soils without mulch at various depths (0-5, 5-10, and 10-15 cm) across different zones: rural, local market, industrial, coastal, and research areas. The detection of MP types and morphology was conducted using FTIR and fluorescence microscopy, respectively. Eight types of MPs were identified, including high-density polyethylene (HDPE), low-density polyethylene (LDPE), polypropylene (PP), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyvinyl fluoride (PVF), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), with concentrations ranging from 0.6 ± 0.21 to 3.71 ± 2.36 MPs/g of soil. The study found no significant trends in MP concentration, with ranges of 0-2.1 ± 0.38, 0-2.87 ± 0.55, and 0-2.0 ± 0.34 MPs/g of soil at depths of 0-5 cm, 5-10 cm, and 10-15 cm, respectively. The highest MP quantity was recorded at 8.67 in coastal area, while the lowest was 6.44 in the local market area. Various MP shapes, e.g., fiber, film, pellet, fragment, and irregular, were observed across all layers. PCA suggested irrigation and organic manure as potential sources of MPs. The estimated concentrations of MPs possessed low non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks to the farming community of Bangladesh.
A comprehensive characterization of indoor ambient microplastics in households during the COVID-19 pandemic

Abstract:Airborne microplastics (MPs) can be easily inhaled by humans, impacting their health as they spend more than 80% of their time indoors, especially during the pandemic. Only a few research studies have examined indoor MPs in the micrometer size range using active sampling, and studies have mainly concentrated on MPs that are millimeters in size. This study investigated the composition of indoor airborne MPs by active sampling in seven houses in the city center of northwestern Turkey (Eskişehir) during the COVID-19 pandemic. The visual identification showed the presence of different colored MPs, white, red, orange, green, and yellow, with different shapes (fibers, fragments, films, lines, foam, and pellets). The size of the identified MPs was between 2.5 and 327.36 μm. The polymeric composition analysis showed the presence of 123 MPs in all the samples with 22 different polymeric compositions. Residents in these houses are exposed to airborne MPs, with inhalation estimates ranging from 12.03 to 18.51 MPs/m 3 . However, it was also estimated that humans inhale 156–240 MPs daily in these houses. The dominant MPs were polyamide 6, polyvinyl chloride, polypropylene, ethylene propylene, polystyrene, and high-density polyethylene. Scanning electron microscopy energy dispersive x-ray elemental analysis revealed the presence of common structural elements, additives, or vectors that are added or adsorbed to MPs like carbon, oxygen, fluorine, magnesium, silicon, chlorine, nitrogen, and aluminum. These indoor environments are prone to MP pollution. Still, the MP level varies due to different characteristics of indoor environments, like activities and the number of occupants/people in the space, etc. The smaller MPs in all the samples highlight the necessity for standardized techniques of MP collection.

Abstract:Airborne microplastics (AMPs) have been reported in indoor and outdoor air in high-income countries and are expected to be a significant contributor to daily microplastic (MP) exposure for human beings. To date, there are only a handful of studies in lower-middle-income countries. In this study, AMPs from 5000 to 50 μm were sampled across selected areas of Sri Lanka using an active sampling technique. Suspected AMPs were further characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. MP concentrations were higher indoors compared to outdoor air (0.13-0.93, compared to 0.00-0.23 particles/m3, respectively). The types of indoor MPs were related to indoor-generating sources, and the occupant's lifestyles. The highest outdoor MP abundance was found near an industrial zone, followed by urban and inland locations in high-density areas. The dominant size range of MPs was 100-300 μm, and the only shapes observed indoors and outdoors were fibers (98%) and fragments. Polyethylene terephthalate was the most prominent MP type, followed by polyester, indicating that textile fibers could be the major source of these AMPs. This study provides the first report on AMPs in Sri Lanka. Considering population growth and industrialization, further research should evaluate possible trends and health risks upon inhalation.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) have become a growing concern in the context of environmental pollution, with an increasing focus on their presence in indoor environments, including university facilities. This study investigates the presence and characteristics of MPs in different university indoor environments. Initial examination of indoor ambient MPs involved physical characterization through optical microscopy, focusing on classifying MPs by shape and color. Various types of MPs, including fibers, fragments, pellets, foams, films, and lines, were identified, with the most common colors being black, red, blue, and brown. Fragments were the predominant type of MPs found, although accurately quantifying their numbers proved challenging due to the dense sample content. These MPs displayed rough and irregular margins suggestive of abrasion. Subsequent chemical and elemental characterization was conducted using micro-Raman and SEM-EDX, revealing the presence of 25 different types of MPs, including PA 66, PTFE, PP, HDPE, and PE. The study indicates that university inhabitants are exposed to airborne MPs (≥ 2.5–336.89 μm) at inhalation rates of 13.88–18.51 MPs/m 3 and 180–240 MPs daily. These MPs exhibited significant variations in size, and their distribution varied among the different indoor environments studied. SEM-EDX analysis revealed common elements in the identified MPs, with C, O, F, Na, Cl, Al, Si, and others consistently detected. This research is the first to comprehensively analyze MPs in nine different indoor university environments using active sampling. Identifying and reducing MP contamination in these facilities might stimulate more awareness, promote extensive scientific investigation, and facilitate the development of informed policies.

Characterizing Indoor-Outdoor PM2.5 Concentrations Using Low-Cost Sensor Measurements in Residential Homes in Dhaka, Bangladesh

Abstract:We collected paired measurements of indoor and outdoor PM2.5 concentrations at 17 homes in Dhaka, Bangladesh, to quantify indoor-outdoor levels, their spatio-temporal variations, and influencing factors. A pair of PurpleAir PM2.5 sensors were deployed at each home, one indoors and the other outdoors, during the wet (June to August 2021) and dry (December 2021 to February 2022) seasons, and the locally calibrated (against a beta attenuation monitor) and quality-assured data were used for analysis. Indoor and outdoor PM2.5 levels were three times higher during the dry season (indoor 146 ± 22 µg/m³, outdoor 153 ± 23 µg/m³) than during the wet season (indoor 52 ± 12 µg/m³, outdoor 50 ± 11 µg/m³). Indoor to outdoor (I/O) ratios were close to 1 in both seasons (dry: 0.97 ± 0.14, wet: 1.05 ± 0.19). This suggests that regional background pollution levels significantly influence indoor levels observed in different households. Higher infiltration factors (dry: 0.83 ± 0.12; wet: 0.87 ± 0.14), determined through mixed effect regression of parallel indoor and outdoor timeseries data, further highlight the substantial impact of outdoor pollution on indoor levels. Data from individual households exhibited strong temporal correlation between indoor and outdoor levels in both seasons (Pearson R: 0.82 ± 0.12 during the dry season and 0.83 ± 0.14 during the wet season), whereas indoor-outdoor spatial correlations across measured households were moderate (R: 0.49 and 0.62 during dry and wet seasons, respectively). These spatial correlations and empirical regression modeling suggest that while the spatial variation of outdoor PM2.5 levels significantly influences indoor levels' spatial variation, other factors such as indoor source activities and ventilation-related features play crucial roles in explaining variabilities in indoor PM2.5 across homes. Overall, our study suggests that indoor environments in Dhaka city are nearly as polluted as outdoor settings, and this locally derived scientific evidence can be valuable for enhancing public awareness and developing mitigation measures to reduce PM2.5 exposures in Bangladesh.

Abstract:This study investigated indoor exposure of particulate matter (PM) at six residential homes in Dhaka, Bangladesh, to assess the degradation of indoor air quality (IAQ) by PM 1.0 , PM 2.5 and PM 10 , as well as correlate indoor PM 2.5 with occupants' lung efficacy and blood oxygen saturation (SpO 2 ). Concentrations of indoor and outdoor PM were monitored individually at day and night using IGERESS Air Quality Monitoring Detector. Mean concentration of indoor PM 1.0 , PM 2.5 and PM 10 were 91.7 ± 47.2, 121 ± 62.4, and 140 ± 72.0 μgm − 3 , respectively. Indoor PM of all size ranges at night were found to be 1.69 times higher than their corresponding daytime concentration. Mean I/O ratio (I/O day = 0.95 and I/O night = 0.93) and strong positive correlation (R2 day = 0.90 and R 2 night = 0.80) between indoor and outdoor PM confirmed infiltration of polluted outdoor air inside the households. Indoor sources had 11% and 14% contribution to indoor PM during day and night, respectively. For Cantonment site, PM measurement was conducted during haze and non- haze weather. Haze- time PM concentration was 1.55 to 1.86 times greater than the non- haze period, which indicated that despite the same indoor environment, infiltrated outdoor PM during haze deteriorated IAQ. The average peak flow rate and SpO 2 of 30 inhabitants in six sampling households were 353 L min − 1 and 98.7%, respectively. Peak flow rate showed strong, negative correlation (R2 = 0.82) with indoor PM 2.5 concentration, which implied that inhalation of excess PM 2.5 was probably responsible for the reduced lung function of the residents. However, no association could be established between SpO 2 and indoor PM 2.5 concentration. These outcomes indicated severely compromised IAQ in urban Dhaka households, so necessary measures are required to reduce the extent of indoor air pollution.

The agricultural soils were categorized into 5–2 mm, 2–1 mm, and 1–0.5 mm size fractions, concentrating on MPs less than 5 mm in surface waters. The mean abundance of MPs in surface soils was 2800 ± 696.42, 2320 ± 622.09, and 2040 ± 313.05 particles/kg, while in subsurface soil they were 2680 ± 576.19, 2200 ± 570.09, and 1760 ± 443.72 particles/kg for respective size fractions, and 376 ± 57.29 particles/liter in surface water. MPs were significantly correlated with soil moisture, pH, electrical conductivity, organic matter, nitrogen, and phosphorus. The predominant polymers were polyethylene, polypropylene, and polystyrene, mainly in fiber and film forms. The ecological risk evaluation indicated a high risk for surface soil and a medium-to-high risk for subsurface soil of agricultural land and surface water. Plastic mulch, solid waste, surface water irrigation, and organic compost were probably the potential sources of MPs, and their entrance into farmland and adjacent environments should be strictly limited. This study would provide the baseline reference for the current situation on agricultural fields and surface water near waste dumping sites, as well as emphasize the need for strong environmental regulations and effective mitigation techniques to address microplastic pollution.

Abstract:Human exposure to microplastics (MPs), especially from indoor air, has aroused growing public concern, but very little is known about the assessment of individual MPs inhalation exposure. In this study, a total of 30 volunteers were recruited from Shanghai, China. Both human inhaled indoor aerosol (HIA) and human exhaled breath (HEB) samples were pairwise collected for each participant and analyzed through micro-Raman imaging spectroscopy. MPs were detected in all samples, averaging 43 +/- 16 (range of 11-92) items/m3 for HIA and 12 +/- 5 (range of 3-28) items/m3 for HEB. Moreover, the dominant components in all samples were small fragment-and fiber-shaped MPs. It is estimated that the daily intake of HIA was roughly 704 +/- 254 MPs items, most of which would deposited in the airway with 526 +/- 203 MPs items, whereas 178 +/- 75 MPs items could be daily discharged via HEB. The actual daily inhalation exposure of MPs could be overestimated by 1.33 times with the HIA-based approach and by 1.40 times for smaller MPs (<10 mu m). These results suggest that integration of HIA and HEB should be considered when evaluating individual MPs exposure via respiration.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) were caused adverse impacts on the marine and terrestrial environments. MPs have been detected in atmospheric deposition, in both large cities and remote areas, raising concern for human health due to their potential intake. In this work, we report atmospheric deposition of MPs indoors and outdoors and explore the characteristics, and sources of atmospheric MPs. The characteristics of MPs in samples were detected via laser direct infrared (LDIR) spectroscopy and intelligent ultra-depth field microscopy. The potential sources of MPs were determined by backward trajectory analysis. All samples contained MPs, and the average concentrations were 241 ± 17 MPs/m 2 /d (outdoor) and 160 ± 7 MPs/m 2 /d (indoor). The observed MPs exhibited various colours, with black MPs accounting for the overwhelming majority (92%). The proportion of MPs with diameters smaller than 20 μm – 80 μm was 70%. Pellets were the most abundant shape of all MPs (60.4% ± 11%), followed by fragments (22.5% ± 3%) and fibres (17.1% ± 15%). In all samples, 7 polymers were detected, cellulose (average proportion: 66.1%) and polyamide (PA; average proportion: 12.5%) occupied the highest proportion. Follow by Fluorocarbon Rubber (FKM) 10.7%, Polyvinylchloride (PVC 8.4%), Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET 1.4%), Polyurethane (PU 0.5%), Polystyrene (PS 0.5%). Backward trajectory analysis revealed the influence of wind on MPs and PM 2.5 transport, and potential source contribution analysis demonstrated the potential sources of MPs. The results of this study indicated that PA accounted for the highest proportion of MPs (average proportion: 47.1%), followed by PVC 43.5%, PET 4.7%, PU 2.4%, PS 2.4%. Pellets were the most abundant of the three shapes. The influence of the airflow trajectory on MPs and PM 2.5 transport is remarkable, and the concentrations of these two pollutants were significantly correlated (r = 0.322, p < 0.01). Therefore, it is necessary to invest more effort in exploring the sources and transmission of MPs and developing routine MPs detection programs.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) in marine and terrestrial environments have been intensively studied, but the dynamics of airborne MPs remains limited. Existing studies on atmospheric MPs are mostly derived from collection of atmospheric deposition, whereas direct measurements of airborne MPs are scarce. However, the abundance of airborne MPs is more relevant for evaluating human inhalation exposure risk. Herein, airborne MPs in indoor and outdoor environments from urban and rural areas of a coastal city in eastern China were investigated. MP concentrations (mean±SD) in indoor air (1583 ± 1180 n/m3) were an order of magnitude higher than outdoor air (189 ± 85 n/m3), and airborne MP concentrations in urban areas (224 ± 70 n/m3) were higher than rural areas (101 ± 47 n/m3). MPs smaller than 100 µm dominated airborne MPs, and the predominant shape of airborne MPs was fragments, as opposed to fibers. The larger MP size fractions contained a higher proportion of fibers, whereas the smaller size fractions were nearly exclusively composed of fragments. The health risk caused by ubiquitous airborne MPs should not be discounted as the maximum annual outdoor exposure of airborne MPs can reach 1 million/year, while indoor exposure may be even higher due to higher indoor airborne MP concentrations.
