Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) pollution is an emerging global environmental concern. Considering the high fraction of time people spend indoors, the human population can be directly exposed to this contamination through indoor dust. This preliminary study evaluates MPs' abundance and human health risk assessment in the deposited indoor dust. A total of forty dust samples (n = 20) were collected from homes in two different cities (Pakistan) in steel mesh pouches using the vacuum cleaner. The identification and quantification of MPs were conducted with a stereo microscope, whereas the qualitative assessment was performed with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The US EPA parameters to calculate the human health risk assessment were used to determine MPs' risk per-day/month/year. Overall, microfibers were the dominant category, followed by microfilms, micro-fragments, and nurdles. The chemical categorization of MPs was revealed as polyester, polyethylene, copolymers of polypropylene, and polyurethane. In Lahore, an average abundance of 241.45 (items/m2) MPs were observed compared to Sahiwal, with 162.1 (items/m2). More than 90% of the identified MPs were microfibers, with higher detection frequency and abundance in Lahore than Sahiwal. The human health risk assessment revealed high exposure risk because of indoor MPs. Moreover, toddlers were more vulnerable as compared to adults at both low and high exposure risk scenarios. There is an imminent need to conduct in-depth risk assessment focusing on the respirable fraction of MPs.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are emerging pollutants found in all ecosystems. While extensive research has focused on MP pollution across ecosystems, investigating their effect on the human body is still in its early stages. This study, conducted for the first time in Iran, specifically investigates MPs in the respiratory system, including sputum, broncho-alveolar lavage fluid (BALF), and pleural fluid. In this study, 34 patients participated after signing the consent form. Professional physicians collected 13 sputum samples, 11 BALF samples, and 10 pleural fluid samples. Patients' demographic information, lifestyle, occupation, exposed environment, and type of disease were evaluated through a questionnaire. The combination of digestion techniques, density separation, observation, Micro-Raman, and SEM/EDS analysis was performed to recognize MPs.The study results confirmed the presence of MPs in the respiratory system of all participants. MPs abundance in sputum, BALF, and pleural fluid varied between 156-468, 28-133, and 21-210 particles/100 mL, respectively. Generally, 22 types of MPs were identified and polyester (62-72%) was predominant. Fiber-shaped MPs were dominant in sputum (77%) and BALF (70%), and fragment-shaped in pleural fluid (63%). Particles <100 μm were the most abundant in all samples [in sputum (75.9%), BALF (50%), and pleural fluid (94.4%)]. Sampling type, occupational exposure, smoking, exposure to cigarette smoke, and wearing masks have affected the abundance of MPs ( P < 0.05). Also, the shape and size of MPs affect their deposition in the respiratory system ( P < 0.05). Hence, minimizing exposure to MPs is essential for safeguarding the environment and human health.

Abstract:Environmental pollutants such as microplastics have become a major concern over the last few decades. We investigated the presence, characteristics, and potential health risks of microplastic dust ingestion. The plastic load of 88 to 605 microplastics per 30 g dry dust with a dominance of black and yellow granule microplastics ranging in size from 250 to 500 μm was determined in 10 street dust samples using a binocular microscope. Fluorescence microscopy was found to be ineffective for detecting and counting plastic debris. Scanning electron microscopy, however, was useful for accurate detection of microplastic particles of different sizes, colors, and shapes (e.g., fiber, spherule, hexagonal, irregular polyhedron). Trace amounts of Al, Na, Ca, Mg, and Si, detected using energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, revealed additives of plastic polymers or adsorbed debris on microplastic surfaces. As a first step to estimate the adverse health effects of microplastics in street dust, the frequency of microplastic ingestion per day/year via ingestion of street dust was calculated. Considering exposure during outdoor activities and workspaces with high abundant microplastics as acute exposure, a mean of 3223 and 1063 microplastic particles per year is ingested by children and adults, respectively. Consequently, street dust is a potentially important source of microplastic contamination in the urban environment and control measures are required.

Abstract:Dust is a main source of different indoor contaminants, such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) generally applied in buildings. This study is the first report on the levels of PCBs in the indoor dust of Bushehr port, Iran. PCBs were evaluated in 30 dust samples collected from homes, offices, and stores. A total of 10 PCB congeners were found in dust samples. The mean levels of PCBs in homes, offices, and stores were 3.46, 0.51, and 1.28 ng/g, respectively. PCB52 and 31 in homes with values of 0.78 and 0.31 ng/g had the highest levels of PCB congeners. Also, no significant difference was detected among the PCB contents of buildings with different applications in Bushehr. Furthermore, PCBs in indoor dust showed acceptable cancer risk (CR) for different age groups. Most CR was observed for infants and toddlers at homes and stores thorough dust ingestion as the main exposure route to PCBs in dust. Based on the results of this research, exposure to PCBs in indoor buildings may cause a high risk for people of different ages.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) pollution represents a nascent environmental contaminant that has recently infiltrated human life and the food chain. The primary objective of this study was to investigate the presence of MPs in different brands of Iranian sausages. Qualitative and quantitative analyses of MPs particles were conducted using stereo- and fluorescent microscopy, FT-IR (Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy), and SEM-EDS (Scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy) techniques. Samples were collected from the most commonly consumed sausage brands in Iranian markets. The findings showed that the various sausage brands contained an average abundance of 25.7 ± 21.68 (range 10-70) and 55.45 ± 45.5 (range 10-175) particles/kg based on optical and fluorescent microscopy analyses, respectively. Predominantly, MPs were identified in fiber form (77-89 %), with a smaller proportion present in fragmented form (11-23 %). Polymer analysis using FT-IR identified polyethylene (PE) and polystyrene (PS) as the primary constituents. Furthermore, the estimated annual intake (EAI) of MPs was calculated at 804 and 3517 particles/kg bw/year for adults and children, respectively, based on optical microscopy observations. In comparison, fluorescent microscopy indicated an intake of 1734 and 7589 particles/kg bw/year for the respective age groups. These results emphasize the potential of MPs contamination to penetrate into different food products including sausages through processing routes, which can threaten human health.
Microplastics in indoor air from Birmingham, UK: Implications for inhalation exposure

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are a group of emerging contaminants that attracted increasing scientific and societal attention over the past decade. So far, most studies on MPs focus on characterizing their occurrence, fate, and impact in the aquatic environment. In contrast, very little is known about the magnitude, patterns, and associated risks of human exposure to MPs, particularly indoors, despite people spending most of their time indoors. This paper provides the first study hitherto of MPs in indoor air via both active and passive sampling from 30 homes and 30 workplaces in Birmingham, UK. The average concentration of MPs in the active air samples was 15.6 ± 5.4 MP/m3 in homes and 13.1 ± 6.5 MP/m3 in workplaces. For atmospheric deposition samples (passive sampling), the average MPs concentrations were 3735 ± 1343 MP/m2/day in homes and 3177 ± 1860 MP/m2/day in workplaces. Mean concentrations of MPs in UK homes were significantly higher (P<0.05) than those in workplaces for both active and passive air samples. This was mainly driven by carpeted floors in all the studied homes, while 13 of the sampled workplaces were uncarpeted. MPs concentrations in atmospheric deposition (passive) samples were significantly higher (P < 0.05) than airborne (active) MPs samples in the studied microenvironments. Nonetheless, a strong correlation (P < 0.01) was observed between the concentrations of MPs measured by active and passive sampling, indicating common sources of MPs to both active and passive samples collected from the same microenvironments. In terms of morphology, fibres were the dominant shape of MPs, followed by fragments, constituting together ≥90% of the identified MPs in all samples, with the remaining minor percent made up by foams. Airborne MPs were dominated by particles in the size range (10-25 μm), and the particles abundance decreased with increasing particle size. MPs in atmospheric fallout particles, were dominated by larger particles (50-100 μm) with lower contribution from smaller particles (10-25 μm) compared to airborne particles. Nonetheless, combined with the predominance of fibres, this raises concern over the risk from inhalation exposure because MPs fibres in the detected size ranges were observed to penetrate into human lung tissue. PET and PVC were the most abundant polymer types in the studied samples followed by PP and PE. The average daily inhalation exposure of UK adults and toddlers was estimated at 3.0 and 6.3 MP/kg body weight/day, respectively. The higher inhalation exposure of UK toddlers raises concern due to their incompletely developed immune and nervous systems.

Abstract:This thesis concerns command and control (C2) work at the tactical level in emergency and crisis response operations. The presented research addresses two main research questions. The first question is whether it is feasible to simulate and study C2 work in the initial stages of response operations by means of role-playing simulations. If so, the second question is how to develop and execute role-playing simulations in order to explore this type of C2 work in a methodologically sound way. The presented research is based on simulations as methodological means for qualitative research. The utilized simulation approach is scenario-based real-time role-playing simulations grounded in models of C2 work and response operations. Three simulations have been conducted based on this methodology and are reported in this thesis. Simulation I focused on the work practice of cooperating commanders whose activities may be enhanced by the use of artifacts. Simulation II concerned the issues of operationalizing advanced technological artifacts in rapid response expert teams. Simulation III gave attention to the role improvisation in C2 teams designated for international operations. The results from the simulations and from the work conducted and presented in this thesis contribute with knowledge and experience from using role-playing simulations to study C2 work. This includes the methodological aspects of designing and conducting role-playing simulations such as scenarios, realism, evaluation and simulation format and control. It also includes the identification of the main application and problem areas for which the methodology is suitable, that is explorative qualitative inquiries and evaluation studies. The thesis provides new insights in C2 work with respect to adaptive behavior and improvisation. The thesis also identifies areas that need to be considered in order to further develop the role-playing simulation approach and its applicability.
Microplastics and mesoplastics as emerging contaminants in Tehran landfill soils: The distribution and induced-ecological risk

Abstract:Environmental pollution with microplastics (MPs) and mesoplastics (MEPs) and their potential risks to human health and ecosystem quality have aroused the concern of communities. Therefore, the pioneering study was conducted on Tehran landfill soil contamination with MPs and MEPs. 56 shallow and deep soil samples were collected from different landfill areas in the wet and dry seasons. The physical and chemical characteristics of MPs and MEPs were measured using a stereomicroscope and FTIR-ATR spectroscopy, respectively. The results showed that the average MP abundance in shallow and deep soil was 863 ± 681 and 225 ± 138 particles/kg soil, and for MEPs, it was 29.8 ± 6.4 and 18.1 ± 8.3 particles/kgsoil. The low-density plastic particles were separated completely by flotation with H2O, NaCl, and ZnCl2 solutions, but PVC was only separated by 90%. Over 90% of MPs and MEPs were LDPE, PP, and PS polymers, explained by their widespread applications in single-use products and their consumption in Iran. Films, white and black, and 0.1-0.5 mm were the dominant shapes, colors, and sizes of MPs, respectively. The prevailing MEPs were film-shaped and in white and yellow colors, with a size of 0.5-1.0 cm. Canonical correlation analysis indicated that total organic matter and moisture were highly correlated with MP shapes. The calculated polymer hazard index values have a wide range at different sampling points, and this index yielded hazard levels III-IV and II-IV for MPs and MEPs, respectively, while according to the pollution load index category, the hazard level of MPs and MEPs was I-II and I. The potential ecological risk index from combined polymers has been estimated to be of minor to extreme danger for MPs and of minor risk for MEPs. Our findings provided baseline data on MPs contamination in Tehran landfill soil and its associated ecological risk, which aids policymakers in implementing risk-reduction measures.

Abstract:Urban water systems are potential sources of secondary microplastics (MPs) as well as a distributor of MPs in the environment. In the present study, the presence of MPs in the urban water systems of the Tehran Metropolitan (Capital of Iran) was investigated. In addition, the probable relationship of MPs with different land uses (i.e., residential-commercial, forest, military, and highway) was assessed. The results showed that all parts of Tehran's urban water system in the study area were contaminated with MPs (107.1 ± 39, 37.8 ± 10.5, 48.3 ± 3.1, 46.9 ± 5.6, 59.4 ± 26.5, 1.7, 2.0 ± 0.6, 7.9 ± 1, 1.8 ± 0.2 particles/liter at the residential, integrated, military, forest, highway runoffs, drinking water, groundwater, seasonal river, and the effluent of the wastewater treatment plants; respectively). However, significant differences were found between different land uses. As expected, the residential runoff had the highest rate of MPs pollution, with 107.1 ± 39 particles/liter. According to the obtained results and our estimation, more than five million MPs/day can enter into the water bodies and soil of the study area through the wastewater treatment plants. While there are significant differences in MPs in the different land uses, our findings suggest that residential areas and highways need further attention in controlling the spread of MPs in urban areas.

Abstract:Individuals spend a lot of time indoors; thus, they can generally be exposed to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) such as teratogens, mutagens, and carcinogens with the potential of environmental and also human health risks. Therefore, the current study was conducted for the analysis, source identification, and health risk assessment of PAHs in household dust samples of the city of Khorramabad, Lorestan province, Iran in 2020. In so doing, 50 household dust samples were collected from 10 sampling sites. After extraction of the analytes, the gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC–MS) method was used to determine the PAHs contents in the samples. Sixteen priority PAHs were detected and quantified in the samples. The median values of ∑16PAHs were found to be 18.4 μg kg −1 . Although based on the results of molecular diagnostic ratios (MDRs), PAH compounds could be originated from both petrogenic and pyrogenic sources, the pyrogenic sources including smoking, natural gas combustion, and traffic prevailed. Total incremental lifetime cancer risks (ILCRs) of children and adults with average values of 2.07E-04 and 1.83E-04, were both classified in the 'high critical value' category. The cancer risk levels via dermal contact (1.15E-04) and direct ingestion (9.19E-05), indicated that both routes greatly contributed to the cancer risk for children. Similarly, the risk value of dermal contact (1.17E-04) and direct ingestion (6.58E-05) were found to be important pathways that adults could be exposed to contaminated dust. Accordingly, the mean values of ILCRs ranked in the following order: dermal contact > direct ingestion > inhalation for both cases (ie, children and adults). In conclusion, to maintain the health of both the man and the environment, it is recommended that regular and periodic analyses of these pollutants in different environmental samples including soil, sediment, dust, particulate matter, air, water, and tissues of living organisms in be performed to help prevent exposure risks of PAHs.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) have become a growing concern in the context of environmental pollution, with an increasing focus on their presence in indoor environments, including university facilities. This study investigates the presence and characteristics of MPs in different university indoor environments. Initial examination of indoor ambient MPs involved physical characterization through optical microscopy, focusing on classifying MPs by shape and color. Various types of MPs, including fibers, fragments, pellets, foams, films, and lines, were identified, with the most common colors being black, red, blue, and brown. Fragments were the predominant type of MPs found, although accurately quantifying their numbers proved challenging due to the dense sample content. These MPs displayed rough and irregular margins suggestive of abrasion. Subsequent chemical and elemental characterization was conducted using micro-Raman and SEM-EDX, revealing the presence of 25 different types of MPs, including PA 66, PTFE, PP, HDPE, and PE. The study indicates that university inhabitants are exposed to airborne MPs (≥ 2.5–336.89 μm) at inhalation rates of 13.88–18.51 MPs/m 3 and 180–240 MPs daily. These MPs exhibited significant variations in size, and their distribution varied among the different indoor environments studied. SEM-EDX analysis revealed common elements in the identified MPs, with C, O, F, Na, Cl, Al, Si, and others consistently detected. This research is the first to comprehensively analyze MPs in nine different indoor university environments using active sampling. Identifying and reducing MP contamination in these facilities might stimulate more awareness, promote extensive scientific investigation, and facilitate the development of informed policies.

Abstract:Exposure to metal(loid)s can cause adverse health effects. This study evaluated the concentrations of aluminum, arsenic, cadmium, chromium, mercury, nickel, and lead in particulate matter <10 μm (PM10) and in the urine of 100 participants from urban residential areas in Iran. A total of 100 residential buildings (one adult from each household) in six cities across Iran were recruited for this study. The levels of metal(loid)s in PM10 and the urine of participants were measured using acid digestion followed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The average (±SE) PM10 concentration in the buildings was 51.7 ± 3.46 μg/m3. Aluminum and cadmium had the highest and lowest concentrations among the metal(loid)s, averaging 3.74 ± 1.26 μg/m3 and 0.01 ± 0.001 μg/m3, respectively. In 85 % of the samples, the concentration of metal(loid)s in indoor air exceeded WHO air quality standards. Cadmium and lead had the highest and lowest numbers of indoor air samples exceeding the recommended standards, respectively. A significant correlation was found between the concentration of metal(loid)s in urine samples and indoor PM10 levels, as well as the wealth index of participants. There was also a significant direct relationship between the concentrations of nickel, arsenic, lead, and mercury in urine and the age of participants. Factors such as building location, type of cooling systems, use of printers at home, and natural ventilation influenced the concentration and types of metal(loid)s in the indoor air.
A comprehensive characterization of indoor ambient microplastics in households during the COVID-19 pandemic

Abstract:Airborne microplastics (MPs) can be easily inhaled by humans, impacting their health as they spend more than 80% of their time indoors, especially during the pandemic. Only a few research studies have examined indoor MPs in the micrometer size range using active sampling, and studies have mainly concentrated on MPs that are millimeters in size. This study investigated the composition of indoor airborne MPs by active sampling in seven houses in the city center of northwestern Turkey (Eskişehir) during the COVID-19 pandemic. The visual identification showed the presence of different colored MPs, white, red, orange, green, and yellow, with different shapes (fibers, fragments, films, lines, foam, and pellets). The size of the identified MPs was between 2.5 and 327.36 μm. The polymeric composition analysis showed the presence of 123 MPs in all the samples with 22 different polymeric compositions. Residents in these houses are exposed to airborne MPs, with inhalation estimates ranging from 12.03 to 18.51 MPs/m 3 . However, it was also estimated that humans inhale 156–240 MPs daily in these houses. The dominant MPs were polyamide 6, polyvinyl chloride, polypropylene, ethylene propylene, polystyrene, and high-density polyethylene. Scanning electron microscopy energy dispersive x-ray elemental analysis revealed the presence of common structural elements, additives, or vectors that are added or adsorbed to MPs like carbon, oxygen, fluorine, magnesium, silicon, chlorine, nitrogen, and aluminum. These indoor environments are prone to MP pollution. Still, the MP level varies due to different characteristics of indoor environments, like activities and the number of occupants/people in the space, etc. The smaller MPs in all the samples highlight the necessity for standardized techniques of MP collection.

Demographic characteristics (including age, gender, and body composition), equipment affecting air quality, and wealth index were also investigated. The mean ± standard error (SE) concentration of particulate matter 10 (PM 10 ) and ∑PAHs in the indoor environment was 43.2 ± 1.98 and 1.26 ± 0.15 μg/m 3 , respectively. The highest concentration of PAHs in the indoor environment in the gaseous and particulate phase related to Naphthalene was 1.1 ± 0.16 μg/m 3 and the lowest was 0.01 ± 0. 0.001 μg/m 3 Pyrene, while the most frequent compounds in the gas and particle phase were related to low molecular weight hydrocarbons. 30% of the samples in the indoor environment have BaP levels higher than the standards provided by WHO guidelines. 68% of low molecular weight hydrocarbons were in the gas phase and 73 and 75% of medium and high molecular weight hydrocarbons were in the particle phase. There was a significant relationship between the concentration of some PAH compounds with windows, evaporative coolers, printers, and copiers (p < 0.05). The concentration of PAHs in houses with low economic status was higher than in houses with higher economic status. The average concentration of 1-hydroxypyrene metabolite in the urine of people was 7.10 ± 0.76 μg/L, the concentration of this metabolite was higher in men than in women, and there was a direct relationship between the amount of this metabolite in urine and the amount of some hydrocarbon compounds in the air, PM 10 , visceral fat and body fat. This relationship was significant for age (p = 0.01). The concentration of hydrocarbons in the indoor environment has been above the standard in a significant number of non-smoking indoor environments, and the risk assessment of these compounds can be significant. Also, various factors have influenced the amount of these compounds in the indoor air, and paying attention to them can be effective in reducing these hydrocarbons in the air.

Abstract:The presence of microplastics (MPs), as an emerging pollutant is a growing concern in drinking water, yet most of the studies have been carried out in surface waters and wastewater treatment plants and there are few studies on MPs in drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs). This study investigates these particles in three different conventional DWTPs in the city of Tehran, Iran, and aims to analyze these particles down to the size of 1 µm. A scanning electron microscope was utilized in this study to quantitatively analyze MPs. Accordingly, the average abundance of MPs in raw and treated water samples varied from 1996 ± 268 to 2808 ± 80 MPs L−1 and 971 ± 103 to 1401 ± 86 MPs L−1, respectively. While particles smaller than 10 µm comprised 65–87% of MPs. Moreover, µ-Raman spectroscopy was used to characterize MPs. As the results, polypropylene, polyethylene terephthalate, and polyethylene were the most abundant identified polymers among MPs, comprising more than 53% of particles. Additionally, MPs were categorized as fibers, fragments, and spheres. This study fills the knowledge gap of MPs presence in Tehran conventional DWTPs which is of high importance since they supply drinking water for more than 8 million people and investigates the performance of conventional DWTPs in removing MPs.

Abstract:This paper focuses on abundance, distribution, and characteristics of microplastics (MPs) in freshwater sediments of Sarab Niloofar Lake, Kermanshah, Iran. After selecting an appropriate method for extraction of MPs, the characterization such as polymer types, surface morphology, and trace elements has been determined using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopic, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopic analysis, respectively. The results highlighted that all sampling locations were contaminated by MP abundance ranged from 1733.33 to 4400 items kg −1 d.w with an average of 2483.59 ± 805.30 items kg −1 d.w. MPs with a size range of 0.025 to 1 mm (25–1000 μm) were the most frequently detected MPs in size (62%). Furthermore, the MPs found in this area mainly contain fiber (61%), fragment (19%), film (9%), foam (6%), and pallet (5%). The main color for detected MPs in sampling stations was black (51%) and followed by white/transparent (27%), red (11%), blue (7%), and yellow (4%). The results of polymer identification revealed that the polyethylene, polystyrene, polyurethane, and polypropylene were the principal polymers. This research work emphasized that various types of MPs have been distributed in freshwater sediments of Sarab Niloofar Lake, which is a first useful data for MPs in one the most important Kermanshah's tourist area.

Abstract:Humans may be exposed to microplastics (MPs) through food, drink, and air. Although several studies have examined indoor environmental MPs, none have yet compared atmospheric MP and bacterial deposition characteristics among rooms in homes. We investigated indoor airborne MPs and bacteria in five room types (bedroom, dining room, living room, bathroom, and study) based on the duration of usage of each room. We identified synthetic polymers (23,889 MP particles of 21 types) and bacterial communities (383 genera belong to 24 phyla) collected through atmospheric deposition in various rooms of 20 homes. The abundance and composition of MPs are related to the duration of usage, human activities, goods, cleanliness, and the composition of occupants (family members) in households. In addition, the homes of elderly families (age 68–81 years) showed higher bacterial concentrations than those of young families (age 28–35 years), indicating that age markedly affects the structure of household microbiota. Furthermore, a significant correlation between MP concentration and bacterial community structure was observed. The abundances of polyamide (PA), polyurethane (PU), and polyethylene (PE) showed positive correlations with the relative abundances of major bacterial phyla. Taken together, our results suggest that various rooms in the home exhibit distinct MP abundances and bacterial structures that may be affected by age, cleanliness, and human activities.

Abstract:Tehran, the capital city of Iran, has been facing air pollution for several decades due to rapid urbanization, population growth, improper vehicle use, and the low quality of fuels. In this study, 31 indoor dust samples were collected passively from residential and commercial buildings located in the central and densely populated districts of the city. These samples were analyzed after preparation to measure the concentration of elements (As, Be, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Se, Sr, V, Zn). Statistical data analyses were employed to compare their relationship across various uses, variations, and for source identification. Geochemical indices of contamination factor (CF) and pollution load index (PLI) were utilized to evaluate the degree of contamination. The mean concentrations of Zn, Cu, and Pb (938, 206, and 176 μg g −1 , respectively) are 6, 5, and 3 times higher than their mean values in worldwide urban soils. Additionally, Cd, Mo, and Ni showed concentrations about 1.5 times higher, while As, Co, Cr, Mn, and Sr fell within the range of reference soils. Be, V, and Sb displayed remarkably lower mean values. Building use did not significantly influence element levels in indoor deposited dust except for Pb and Zn. A comparison of indoor concentrations with previously published data for outdoor dusts revealed higher enrichments of Mo, Cu, Pb, and Ni, while As, Cd, and Zn showed lower enrichments in street dust samples. The order of CF values indicated Hg > Zn > Cd > Pb > Cu > As > Ni > Cr > Co > V. For Hg, Zn, Pb, Cd, and Cu, all or almost all samples exhibited very high contamination. PLI values were consistently higher than 1, indicating contamination in all samples. Multivariate statistical analysis and Tehran's specific geological location suggested that mafic-intermediate volcanic rocks are primary sources for Cr, Cu, Fe, and Ni (PC1). As, Pb, and V (PC2) were attributed to fossil fuel combustion in vehicles and residential buildings. Pb is a legacy metal remaining from the use of leaded gasoline, which was phased out in the 1990s. Zn (PC3) is derived from vehicle tires.
