Abstract:Purpose: While clinical practice is crucial for nursing students to acquire the skills needed to provide professional, high-quality nursing care, further studies on improving undergraduate nursing programs are needed to provide a supportive clinical learning environment for student nurses. This study aimed to understand nursing students' clinical experiences in newborn nurseries and neonatal intensive care units and to provide basic data for the establishment of strategies to promote effective clinical education.Methods: Interviews were held with 15 nursing students at J University who had clinical practice experience in the newborn nursery and neonatal intensive care unit. The collected data were analyzed using the phenomenological analysis method developed by Colaizzi (1978).Results: The nursing students' experiences were grouped into four categories: “expectations for and anxiety about clinical practice", "acquisition of a wide range of knowledge regarding neonatal nursing", "challenges faced in clinical practice", and "experiencing interpersonal changes".Conclusion: The current neonatal practice nursing education system provides students with positive learning experiences. However, the lack of practice opportunities, insufficient instruction, and the theory-practice gap were identified as major issues hindering students' learning needs. These study results are expected to provide basic data for curriculum development to improve undergraduate nursing education.

Abstract:Implementing person-centred care is often considered difficult in congested emergency rooms. The purpose of this study was to understand person-centred care experienced by emergency room nurses in depth and examine the essence of emergency room nurses' lived experience of the person- centred care. Eight nurses working in the emergency room of a large hospital in South Korea and who had over six months of experience were surveyed via semi-structured interviews in February 2019. The data were transcribed and analysed using Colaizzi's framework. The major findings related to person-centred care experiences among emergency room nurses were: (1) feeling distanced from patients; (2) guilt and frustration; (3) accepting patients' symptoms and emotions as they are; (4) person-centred care as a domain of nursing that cannot be replaced by machines; and (5) nursing as an art wherein the minutest details make a difference. Providing person-centred practice in the emergency room is difficult, but it will not only improve the quality of patient care but also increase the job satisfaction of nurses. Based on an in-depth understanding of person-centred care experienced by emergency nurses, it will contribute to enhancing the quality of nursing care in the emergency room.
The Evolution of Phenomenology in Korean Nursing Research: A Scoping Review

Abstract:Purpose Phenomenological methods are used to capture human experience, and nursing research has long attempted phenomenological approaches in many studies. This study explored the 22-year trends (2001 to 2022) in phenomenological research within Korean nursing science and identified the types of journals where research is published, common phenomenological data analysis methods, phenomena of interest, and standards of rigor applied to phenomenological studies. Methods This scoping review followed the six stages recommended by Arksey and O'Malley's (2005) and utilized the PRISMA Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) for reporting guidance. A total of 4,354 articles acquired through systematic searches across of seven search engines PubMed, CINAHL, Embase, Research Information Sharing Service (RISS), Korea Citation Index (KCI), Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI), and Koreanstudies Information Service System (KISS) were reviewed. Key search terms and inclusion and exclusion criteria were used as strategies to identify relevant articles. Results In the final review, 568 Korean phenomenological studies were included. Among the phenomenology research, 50.4% of the total work was performed between 2016 and 2020, and the Colaizzi method of study was the most common (62.9%). Most researchers were published in nursing journals (55.8%). Nurses constituted most participants (24.5%), followed by patients with illnesses (23.1%), and people of all ages. The primary focus included participants' experiences: the disease experience of the sick, job-related experience of the nurses, and learning-related experience of the nursing students. The median sample size of reviewed papers (i.e., 9) is relevant to phenomenological research saturation. The most rigorous studies applied Lincoln and Guba's criteria (54.0%). Conclusion Advancing phenomenological research in nursing entails giving priority to diverse perspectives, rigor and the foundational essence of phenomenology. Ensuring transparency and reliability requires reinforcing rigor through the integration of phenomenology, philosophy, and effective data methods.

Ethical Problems Experienced by Community Mental Health Nurses in Korea

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to explore ethical problems that cause moral distress in nurses and affects the quality of care provided by community mental health nurses working in community mental health settings. Three focus group interviews were held with 14 nurses working in 3 community mental health centers in Korea. Qualitative descriptive methods and qualitative content analysis were used. Data analysis found 5 domains (decision making, communication, resources, safety, advocacy), 9 categories (personal information sharing issues, ethical insensibility, collisions between principles and practice, institutions unprepared in ethical problems, ethical dilemma in interactions with clients, problems with the evaluation system, problems with the budget structure, problems with the lack of safety measure, and problems with role limitation as a professional) and 11 subcategories. Results of this study suggest a) a need for further research on identifying ethical conflicts arising in community mental health fields, and b) on what nurses actually do when they deal with ethical conflicts, c) efforts to develop ethics support programs such as ethics education, training and reflection meetings to enhance nurses' ethical sensitivity, d) consideration of a supportive environment and culture that prioritizes ethical concerns in practitioners as well as administrators.

Understanding Nurses’ Experiences and Perceptions of End-of-Life Care for Cancer Patients in Korea: A Scoping Review

Abstract:Background: Quality end-of-life care for cancer patients is a global health priority, and nurses are instrumental in providing this care. However, little is known about nurses’ experiences and perceptions in end-of-life care settings in Korea. Aims: This scoping review examined Korean nurses’ end-of-life care experiences and assessed the state of research in this area. Methods: Systematic searches were conducted using 7 electronic databases (PubMed, CINAHL, Scopus, Embase, WPRIM, KCI, and RISS), and 17 studies were selected for review. Findings: Most studies were limited to cross-sectional, descriptive designs. Outcomes regarding end-of-life care measured in the studies were categorized into cognitive variables, emotional variables, participation/performance, and educational needs. Study results suggested low nurse knowledge and self-efficacy with regard to provision of end-of-life care. Perceived barriers to quality end of life care included difficulties in meeting family members’ needs. In addition, emotional outcomes associated with end-of-life care included high levels of nurse stress and burnout. Predictors of elevated stress included inability to provide adequate pain control, inability to reconcile patient requests with physician orders, and heavy workload. Although most nurses had end-of-life care experience, fewer than half reported receiving related education. The lack of knowledge and skill related to end of life care was a primary contributor to stress. Conclusions: Korean nurses providing end-of-life care for cancer patients need additional education and support to help them manage high stress levels. Further study is needed to identify strategies for meeting nurses’ end-of-life care education needs and of improving their overall performance in such practice.

Abstract:Active migration and globalization have led to increased opportunities for critical care nurses to care for patients from diverse racial and cultural backgrounds. This study thus aimed to identify the individual, interpersonal, and organizational factors affecting cultural competence levels among neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) nurses based on an ecological model. This was a cross‐sectional descriptive study that included 135 NICU nurses in South Korea. A hierarchical multiple linear regression analysis was conducted using the proposed ecological model, and a regression model for each of the four subdomains of cultural competence was constructed and compared. NICU nurses' cultural competencies were influenced not only by the "necessity of multicultural education" and "ethnocultural empathy" at the individual level but by the "hospital's readiness and support for cultural competencies" at the organizational level. To promote the cultural competence of nurses in critical care settings, environmental and organizational support should be improved, along with developing strategies that focus on nurses' individual characteristics. It is also necessary to investigate the "intersectionality" of the effects of individual and environmental factors on cultural competence.

Abstract:Policy reforms implemented in Saudi Arabia in recent years aim to modernize the culture and infrastructure of healthcare delivery and are expected to integrate person‐ and patient‐centered care principles throughout the national healthcare system. However, in a complex multicultural environment where most nurses are international migrant workers, unique challenges emerge that frame the delivery of care. Better understanding is needed about what nurses perceive to be high‐quality, person‐centered care in Saudi Arabia and how they manage to enact it in practice. Semi‐structured interviews were conducted with 21 nurses working in two tertiary hospitals in Riyadh, the capital city. Participants included Saudi citizens (n = 9) and expatriates (n = 12) who were asked to describe their perceptions of quality nursing care and explain the obstacles that they encounter in providing such care. Nurses reported extensive efforts to achieve individualized, empathetic, developmentally appropriate care. Their descriptions of care aligned with principles of patient‐centeredness in care but were not separable from challenges at the patient, organizational, and regional levels, including staffing and supplies shortages, gaps in regional care coordination, inadequate language translation services, variability in cultural beliefs about healthcare communication, and overt discrimination against expatriate workers. Nurses reported creative strategies to achieve professional nursing values while navigating a dynamic landscape of constraints. The findings add to literature suggesting that person‐centeredness in care cannot be understood outside the social and organizational conditions that shape it.

A multilevel investigation of cultural competence among South Korean clinical nurses

Abstract:Background: There is lack of empirical evidence on whether organisational variables affect the cultural competence of nurses. Aim: This study aimed to investigate individual and organisational characteristics associated with South Korean clinical nurses' cultural competence. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional research design was used. A convenient sample of 401 clinical nurses from 21 hospitals in South Korea was recruited between November 2015 and February 2016. Multilevel modelling was used to estimate the effects of individual- and organisation-level predictors. Data were analysed using the nlme package in R. Results: Multilevel modelling indicated that professionalism (β = 0.02, p < 0.001) and foreign language fluency (β = 0.25, p = 0.012) were significant individual-level predictors. Education on foreign patient care was marginally significant at p = 0.069. At the organisational level, nurse-to-patient ratio (β = 0.37, p = 0.038) and organisational cultural competence (β = 0.02, p < 0.001) were significant predictors. In addition, hospital ownership and work environment were marginally significant at p = 0.054 and p = 0.050, respectively. Furthermore, there was a significant cross-level interaction between professionalism and hospital ownership (β = 0.03, p = 0.003). Conclusion: To provide culturally competent care, nurse leaders should recognise the importance of organisational-level factors, such as nurse staffing and organisational cultural competence, and create an environment that is inclusive of diverse patients, as well as promote professionalism among individual nurses.
Issues commonly faced by nurses caring for international patients: A qualitative study

Abstract:Aim: To identify common challenges nurses face when caring for international patients, irrespective of specialty, medical facility, or nursing experience. Background: Internationalization in medical facilities is progressing worldwide, and the number of international patients is increasing, as is evident in Japan. Introduction: Delivering high-quality nursing care to international patients can be challenging owing to language and socio-cultural barriers. Research examining the challenges faced by nurses in these situations is limited. It is necessary to clarify and analyze the current situation when interacting with international patients. Methods: This study employed a qualitative design. Semistructured interviews were conducted with 11 registered nurses experienced in caring for non-Japanese patients. Qualitative content analysis was performed following Mayring's approach. Results: We identified 56 subcategories, 23 categories, and 8 core categories for challenges faced by nurses interacting with international patients: language, religion or culture, medical culture, financial status, treatment continuity, care support, hospital protocols, and addressing requests or requirements for international patients. Discussion: This study analyzed the religious, lifestyle, and cultural differences (along with the various language and communication barriers) faced by nurses who treat international patients. It also discussed the need for accessible, cross-cultural information in hospitals that have limited accommodations for international patients. Conclusion: Nurses could be more accommodating of patients' religions, lifestyles, and cultures by familiarizing themselves with relevant background information beforehand. Implications for nursing policy: Differences in health care cultures across countries can lead to malpractice, as dealing with cultural differences is difficult for nurses who interact with international patients and they may not be fully informed about the challenges posed by such differences. It is important for nurses to share their experiences in dealing with international patients and prepare for the increasing number of international patients in the future.
Korean Hospital Nurses' Experiences with COVID-19: A Meta-Synthesis of Qualitative Findings

Abstract:During the COVID-19 pandemic, hospital nurses in South Korea cared for patients amid their own anxiety and fear of infection, armed with a sense of professional duty and overcoming all odds to end the country's infectious disease pandemic. This study aims to provide a meta-synthesis of qualitative studies examining the perceptions and experiences of nurses who cared for patients in dedicated COVID-19 hospitals in South Korea. Electronic databases, including RISS, KISS, KMbase, NDSL, KoreaMed, DBpia, PubMed, CINAHL, and Cochrane, were searched for research published until 2023. The study included research using qualitative approaches. These were reviewed and analyzed using a thematic synthesis approach. The quality of the studies was ascertained using the Critical Appraisal Skills Program checklist for qualitative research. Ultimately, 13 studies involving 219 nurses were included in the final review. Six major themes and thirteen subthemes emerged. The six topics are: "The crisis of a pandemic that suddenly appeared", "Challenges in nursing patients with infectious diseases", "A struggle in an unknown time due to a prolonged infectious disease", "Ethical dilemmas in the face of infectious diseases", "Duality of the social support system", and "Professional growth for nurses regarding infectious diseases". During the unexpected COVID-19 pandemic, nurses were able to overcome difficult situations through their interactions with patients, sense of professional mission, and commitment to nursing. Most importantly, they persevered through their collaboration and closeness with fellow nurses, despite confusion about their professional identity, the ethical dilemmas they faced in patient care, and dual attitudes regarding their social support system. To prepare for future infectious disease outbreaks, a multifaceted support system should be established to enable nurses to have positive interactions with their families, colleagues, and patients, which are central to their resilience.

Abstract:The uptake of carbon dioxide on N-(2-aminoethyl)-3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane 1 and N-(6-aminohexyl)-3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane 2 afforded a supramolecular network of bis-silylated ammonium carbamate salts, the hydrolytic polycondensation of which gave rise to structured hybrid materials. Subsequent loss of CO2 was readily achieved upon heating, thus generating materials in which the structure was maintained (well-defined lamellar structure from 2) and contains free amino groups. The accessibility of amine-functionalized groups was shown by their ability to complex transition metal or lanthanide salts.
South Korean Nurses’ Experiences with Patient Care at a COVID-19-Designated Hospital: Growth after the Frontline Battle against an Infectious Disease Pandemic

Abstract:COVID-19 is a respiratory disease caused by a novel coronavirus that quickly spread worldwide, resulting in a global pandemic. Healthcare professionals coming into close contact with COVID-19 patients experience mental health issues, including stress, depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, and burnout. This study aimed to explore the experiences of COVID-19-designated hospital nurses in South Korea who provided care for patients based on their lived experiences. Eighteen nurses working in a COVID-19-designated hospital completed in-depth individual telephone interviews between July and September 2020, and the data were analyzed using Giorgi’s phenomenological methodology. The essential structure of the phenomenon was growth after the frontline battle against an infectious disease pandemic. Nine themes were identified: Pushed onto the Battlefield Without Any Preparation, Struggling on the Frontline, Altered Daily Life, Low Morale, Unexpectedly Long War, Ambivalence Toward Patients, Forces that Keep Me Going, Giving Meaning to My Work, and Taking Another Step in One’s Growth. The nurses who cared for patients with COVID-19 had both negative and positive experiences, including post-traumatic growth. These findings could be used as basic data for establishing hospital systems and policies to support frontline nurses coping with infectious disease control to increase their adaption and positive experiences.

Abstract:PURPOSE: This study attempted to understand the core experiences of physicians related to communicating with nurses in Korea.METHODS: Ten physicians who worked at four tertiary university hospitals were interviewed. Data were analyzed using the phenomenological method developed by Colaizzi.RESULTS: The following six categories of participants' experience of communication with nurses were extracted from the analysis: (a) "Complex situations and heavy roles that cannot afford safety," (b) "Forcing a superior position in an authoritative environment," (c) "Different perspectives on patient care and difficulties in establishing relationships," (d) "Communicating key clues and receiving feedback from each other," (e) "Apathetic agreements rather than improvements," and (f) "Gradually developing mutually complementary communication."CONCLUSION: The present findings revealed that physicians lacked an understanding about the roles and tasks of nurses. The participants engaged in mutually complementary communication with experienced nurses, obtaining desirable patient outcomes and perceived order filtering by nurses as a safety mechanism. It is important for managers to act as proactive change agents to improve communication. Furthermore, the importance and different forms of complementary communication between physicians and nurses need to be described and taught in depth with practical cases.

New Graduate Nurses' Experiences by Generation in South Korea: A Qualitative Meta-Synthesis

Abstract:Background: As the nursing organization environment evolves into one in which several generations work together, there are concerns about generational differences leading to conflicts. Purpose: A synthesis of qualitative studies was used to gain insight into the experiences and perceptions of new nurses working in South Korean hospitals and identify generational differences between nurses of Generations X and Y. Methods: Eight databases were searched systematically for qualitative studies published up to June 2020. The Critical Appraisal Skills Programme Checklist for Qualitative Research was used to evaluate the quality of the retrieved studies, and the data were synthesized thematically using the Thomas and Harden method. Results: Of the 2,482 studies retrieved, 19 were included in this meta-synthesis. The experience of new nurses were presented in the three analytical themes of work experience, interpersonal relationships, and adaptation, from which eight descriptive themes were derived: (a) dissatisfied with own work performance, (b) negative feedback on work outcomes, (c) irregular daily life, (d) colleagues who help adapt to work life or make work life harder, (e) feelings of sympathy toward peers, (f) disrespectful patients or caregivers, (g) effective reactions, and (h) ineffective reactions. Although the new nurses from Generations X and Y reported similar experiences during their first year of nursing, differences were found in their values and tendencies regarding work and interpersonal relationships. Compared with new Generation X nurses, new Generation Y nurses placed more value on the meaning of individual work contributions, intimacy with colleagues, and appropriate feedback. Conclusions/implications for practice: The findings of this study support nursing administrators implementing strategies that both acknowledge and reduce the impact of generational category on nursing teams. Furthermore, emphasizing communication and acknowledging ongoing change as generations progress may strengthen bonds that lead nurses to value each other and their work.
Impact of South Korea’s Comprehensive Nursing Service Policy on Nurse and Patient Outcomes

Abstract:In some Asian and African countries, caregivers of patients are permitted to reside in hospital rooms and support the daily tasks of patient care. To solve the various problems that this system could cause, the Korean government has established a comprehensive nursing service, whereby caregivers are no longer permitted in the hospital and, instead, nurses provide all the patient care. This study aimed to identify and evaluate the effectiveness of the comprehensive nursing service, by surveying 1348 nurses to evaluate nursing outcomes—specifically, the Nurses’ Assessment of Quality Scale, job satisfaction, and turnover intention. A total of 396 patients were also surveyed to determine patient outcome, in particular patient satisfaction. In the comprehensive nursing service ward, the total score on the Nurses’ Assessment of Quality Scale, job satisfaction, and patient satisfaction scores were higher than in the non-comprehensive nursing service ward. Moreover, turnover intention was lower. All differences were statistically significant. The results of this study demonstrate that the decision to implement policy-based comprehensive nursing services has thus far been beneficial. In the future, the government should revise and supplement its policies through various socioeconomic assessments.

Opinions and Experiences of Foreign Student Nurses Regarding Patient Care Practices in Türkiye: A Qualitative Study

Abstract:Aims: We aimed to identify the unique challenges and opportunities faced by international student nurses in Türkiye when practicing patient care. This understanding is essential for educators, healthcare institutions, and policy makers to create more inclusive and supportive environments that enhance learning and professional development. Addressing these challenges can lead to better integration of foreign student nurses into the healthcare system, ultimately improving patient care quality. This research is important for all stakeholders in healthcare - educators, administrators, policymakers, and patients - because a diverse and well-supported nursing workforce is essential for the delivery of culturally competent and high-quality care. Methods: This study employed interpretative phenomenology. Data were collected from 12 foreign nursing students from Iraq, Egypt, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Iran, and the Netherlands. Data were collected between 01 and 20 May 2023 in the Nursing Department of the Faculty of Health Sciences of a state university in the province of Şanlıurfa, located in the southeastern region of Türkiye. Data were analyzed using Colaizzi's method. Results: We identified four themes: "Metaphors describing patient care practices," "Factors affecting care practices," "Needs for education and support," and "Opportunities during patient care practices." Positively influencing factors included better education and living standards and economic benefits, while negatively influencing factors were traumatic events before studying abroad, racial discrimination, language and cultural differences, negative emotions, peer victimization, and lack of use of standards. Interviewees reported a need for training and support and that patient care practices provided opportunities for greater awareness, responsibility, and professional integration. Discussion: Positive and negative experiences of foreign student nurses were evident in the delivery of patient care practice. Interventions are needed to alleviate negatively influencing factors, provide training and support for students, and improve opportunities for foreign nationals. Identification of these factors can help medical educators to develop culturally sensitive and inclusive approaches, as well as individual/organisational facilitators that enhance existing opportunities and remove barriers.
Challenges Experienced by Family Caregivers of the Adult Intensive Care Unit Patients in Korea: An Integrative Review

Abstract:Consistent with global trends, population aging in South Korea is necessitating increasing admissions to intensive care units (ICU). This integrative review describes the challenges experienced by family caregivers of ICU patients in South Korea and evaluates relevant intervention studies. Using Whittemore and Knafl’s methods, we identify and synthesize findings from 20 (14 descriptive and 6 experimental design) articles and evaluate study quality. South Korean ICU family caregivers reported challenges such as feelings of powerlessness and vulnerability, difficulty in maintaining their own health and well-being, and mixed feelings regarding patients’ transition to the general ward. Intervention studies, which were based on quasi-experimental design, examined modified visiting hours, information provision strategies, nurse-led transitional care programs, and educational support. Findings highlight the current state of the science in this topic area in South Korea. Future studies should use more robust methods, such as longitudinal cohort studies and randomized controlled trials.

Defining Caring Efficacy for Nursing Students in South Korea: A Mixed-Method Analysis

Abstract:Introduction: Caring efficacy is a core nursing concept, but its application in nursing practice remains unclear. Objective: This study analyzed the meaning and attributes of caring efficacy among nursing students, defined caring efficacy in this context, and identified the substantive constituents of the concept. Methods: This hybrid study analyzed and compared data from a literature review and in-depth interviews with students in the clinical practice stage of a nursing program, according to the model suggested by Schwartz-Barcott and Kim. Results: The results revealed five attributes of nursing caring efficacy and 17 indicators across two dimensions. Considering the attributes identified in theoretical work and fieldwork, this study defined nursing students' care efficiency based on their "qualifications and personality for caring" as "self-confidence in caring capabilities," rooted in their "growth through caring experience" and the conditions of their "educational environment for learning caring and social support." Conclusion: The findings could guide the development of nursing caring efficacy scales. Future studies should explore caring efficacy among professional and student nurses in various clinical fields.

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to explore American student perceptions of caring for Korean patients during a 2 week exchange program. Perceptions of Korea/Koreans focused on five areas: respect, hospitality and gift giving, ability to speak English, hierarchical relationships, and being protective. Their perceptions of personal change focused in four areas: valuing personal cultural experiences, increasing cultural awareness and compassion, seeing people from other ethnic groups as individuals and developing interest in oriental medicine. Four areas of importance identified when caring for Korean patients included showing respect, importance of family, food, and care for post-partum mothers. Differences were experienced between an individualistic, low-context society (United States) and a collectivist, high context society (Korea) where the influence of Confucianism is pervasive.
