Abstract:Aging and death need to be seen as a single reality, aging-and-death. Abstract:This paper considers the concept of successful ageing by means of a dialogue with the concept of frailty. This dialogue reveals the limits and blindspots of both concepts as well as their apparent dichotomy and the importance of understanding both the objective and subjective experience of ageing. In particular, the dialogue highlights that both frailty and successful ageing are social constructs that derive their meaning from what society values (autonomy, youthful capacities). They cannot by themselves account for the fact that flourishing and frailty are often found together whilst conversely successful ageing may not bring satisfaction. I argue that the arts and humanities supply us with conceptual and methodological tools with which to revisit what it is to age well offering a holistic approach that combines sensitivity both to older people's lived experience and to the underpinning material conditions and embodied realities. For this purpose, and building on previous scholarship in cultural gerontology, I suggest the unique value of concepts and frameworks associated by Simone de Beauvoir. When brought into alignment with the tenets of cultural and narrative gerontology, these concepts facilitate a rich understanding of the nuances and paradoxes of flourishing in deep old age which can also aid in restorying both old age and the life course more generally. I illustrate this through two examples: a feminist self-help guide to ageing, which accepts both limitations and growth and a film that imagines the possibilities of authentic ageing even despite a context of poverty, patriarchy and Alzheimer's Disease.

Abstract:Using a lifespan perspective, we investigated a neglected aspect of research on religion, namely, whether perceptions of growth from adversity might strengthen religious worldviews, thus accounting for feelings about one's own death in old age. A directed content analysis of in-depth interviews from 16 adults aged 65+ focused on life events, religious worldviews, and death. Findings suggested that participants’ religious worldview beliefs were associated with positive reinterpretation of lifespan adversities such that stressors functioned as opportunities for spiritual growth. Participants’ views of and beliefs about death were without fear, indicating the potential influence of highly individualized and deeply spiritual religious worldview beliefs on the abatement of death fear.

Abstract:We propose two interferometric schemes to experimentally detect in real space the onset of pair condensation in a two-spin-component Fermi gas. Two atomic wave packets are coherently extracted from the gas at different positions and are mixed by a matter-wave beam splitter: we show that the spatial long-range order of the atomic pairs in the gas reflects in the atom counting statistics in the beam splitter output channels. The same long-range order is also shown to create a matter-wave grating in the overlapping region of the two extracted wave packets, grating that can be revealed by a light-scattering experiment.

Abstract:This article addresses the many complex and traumatic losses wrought by the COVID‐19 pandemic. In contrast to individually‐based, symptom‐focused grief work, a resilience‐oriented, systemic approach with complex losses contextualizes the distress and mobilizes relational resources to support positive adaptation. Applying a family resilience framework to pandemic‐related losses, discussion focuses on the importance of shared belief systems in (1) meaning‐making processes; (2) a positive, hopeful outlook and active agency; and (3) transcendent values and spiritual moorings for inspiration, transformation, and positive growth. Practice guidelines are offered to facilitate adaptation and resilience.

Abstract:Aging is an inevitable part of life. It brings forth a plethora of changes, both physical and emotional, that can pose several challenges for individuals. In this article, we will delve into the issues associated with aging, explore their impact on daily life, and provide insights on how to navigate through them gracefully. We all know that Aging is nothing more than a natural stage of life. "Aging takes place in a cell, an organ, or the total organism with the passage of time. It is a process that goes on over the entire adult life span of any living thing." [1] Still, while speaking of it, it is mainly surrounded by positive narratives and pleasant thoughts - all of which were created not to highlight the quality and value of old age but to give all those who have not yet reached it a sugarcoated image. Things are entirely different for those approaching or already deep into this [final] stage of life. "Old age [is] heavy clothes" is one of the folk Romanian sayings accom-panying this stage – emphasizing the unwieldiness of this stage. The concept of positive Aging is constantly gaining attention in the literature as an approach to health and well-being that incorporates a range of factors in the lives of older adults. But, religion, through theological explanation, has a different approach to aging and approaching death. Let us see what the depths of religious thinking about aging and theological grounds embodied in religious faiths and practices, making specific behaviors conform to these beliefs. The possibility of controlling aging effects is so biased, as if you were trying to build a dam in the middle of the floods. That is why the conclusion of the study is not limited to the management of the effects of aging or to the recognition of the problems it faces and stipulates a method of approaching aging in advance as pre-vention.

Abstract:There was a day in March 2020 when I discovered I was old. There had, of course, been quite a few previous intimations of impending old age, but they had not “really” defined my being for me. Some years earlier, I had been surprised when people started to offer me their seat on a crowded bus or train. At first, I politely refused the seat; later, I decided that I would accept such invitations because declining seemed ungracious, and because accepting would encourage this thoughtful behavior from which “others” would benefit. Recently, as my feet have begun to ache more, I have sometimes been happy to accept a seat on my own account. There have been other intimations too: some physical indications, such as needing a brighter light in order to read and stiffness in my knees. There have also been signs that my cultural, intellectual, and professional world, a world in which I have been deeply embedded, is passing: Students now live in an online media world that is alien to me, and a few of my colleagues have made it known that they find my research interests on Simone de Beauvoir a bit old-fashioned (I don't agree with them, of course). But none of this actually defined me for myself as “old.” Surely, still an unremarkable, white, late-middle-aged woman, I did not think I “looked my age.” Surely, I had not yet become a member of that detested “foreign species” (as Beauvoir put it) whose presence lurks within us all and that I, like most of us, so vehemently sought to deny.

Abstract:In this chapter, we discuss how the aging process is intertwined with two important aspects of life experiences: work and retirement. We define work as paid employment activities. It is well-recognized that work provides many things and meanings to our life, including income, security and autonomy, identity and self-esteem, relationships outside of the family, opportunities to develop skills and creativity, and a structure for everyday life. Further, we define retirement as an individual’s exit from the workforce, which accompanies decreased psychological commitment to and behavioral withdrawal from work. This definition is consistent with the argument made by life stage developmental theories that retirement is a life stage that not only corresponds to decreased levels of physical activities and productivities, but also involves lowered stress and less responsibility to others in day-to-day life. As such, one’s aging process often coincides with the transition from work to retirement.

Abstract:Retirement. The word has traditionally represented a milestone for working individuals: after a lengthy phase of labor, one was rewarded with a new segment of life free from the responsibilities of one's vocation. As society has progressed, however, the concept of retirement has also changed, evolving to encompass much more than freedom from work. The elements of retirement that have been generally considered most important, financial security and leisure, have maintained their significance but are now accompanied by issues that reflect the population of today. Factors such as continued self-fulfillment, a sense of worth, social interactions, and intellectual stimulation have become equally as important. Life expectancies have increased, and the period of retirement has lengthened, presenting many retirees with unexpected challenges. Financial security and leisure have most likely been achieved, but what else is there? What can be found missing from the equation are components that have, for many years, shaped these individuals' existences. For physicians, an absence of the very valuable social, intellectual, and structural constants may be experienced. Lacking a definitive plan to address this possible void can lead one to feelings of insignificance and an uncertainty about what rewards retirement will afford one. Advanced planning can lessen the shock of the transition from the working phase to the retirement phase of one's life. Whether this is accomplished by choosing to continue one's career (albeit on a lesser scale), establishing a strong alternative social system, or developing self-satisfying and meaningful interests, a well thought-out plan can ensure that retirement serves its intended purpose of providing a rewarding chapter in the book of life.

Abstract:Transhumanists and their fellow travelers urge humanity to prioritize the development of biotechnologies that would eliminate aging, delivering 'an endless summer of literally perpetual youth.' Aspiring not to age instantiates what philosopher Martha Nussbaum calls the yearning for 'external transcendence,' or the fundamental surpassing of human bounds due to confidence that life without them would be better. Based on Immanuel Kant's account of the parameters of human understanding, I argue that engineering agelessness could not be a rational priority for humanity on the level of public policy. This stance is complemented by an argument focused on individual decision-making in liberal-democratic milieus, where no governing conception of the good is presumed and the first-personal level matters greatly. Here, drawing on philosopher and cognitive scientist Laurie Ann Paul's concept of 'transformative experience,' I maintain that individuals could not 'rationally,' meaning, here, 'prudentially,' say 'yes' to agelessness. Absorbing the irrationality of human zeal to eliminate aging, based on assurance that an ageless existence would be better, should spur a redoubled dedication to human flourishing.

Abstract:The aging process is associated with physical, cognitive, and social changes in one’s life that individuals have to cope with and with a redefinition of one’s priorities and objectives in life. Whereas these changes are mainly defined as difficulties to overcome, they may stand also as an opportunity to explore new possibilities of personal development and self-achievement. Entrepreneurship can illustrate this positive process. In this chapter, we focus on the experience of aging and the perception of time horizon and its role in the understanding of the entrepreneurial intention among the elderly. By presenting different theories, such as the socio-emotional selectivity theory, the SOC model (selection, optimization, compensation), the continuity theory, and the psychological development theory, we suggest individual variables related to subjective aging that may explain entrepreneurial intention among the elderly.
The Retirement process: Making the Person and Cultural Meanings malleable

Abstract:In research on life-course transitions, the dynamics of reorganizing meanings and lives were examined in interviews with 32 retiring workers in the United States. New retirees engaged in reorganization of self and social identity by work in special projects involving physical labor to demolish and rebuild backyards and household interiors. Findings indicate that the work in these projects conjoins the reshaping of subjective experience and social life. The projects express a behavioral narrative of the transition in that the spatial sequence of activities (moving from households to the community) parallels the temporal order of reorganization (from self to social identity). Individuals invent and recapitulate partially formed symbols (i.e., dirt, birth, and death) and prior life events to develop new self-images and social lives. These metaphors and processes of separation and death foster creativity and reintegration and must be viewed as integral to transition rather than interpreted as phenomena to be avoided as they are in gerontology and medical practice. Transitions need to be understood as situated within individual histories and cultural contexts.
Preparing for the Future While Living in the Present: Older Adults' Experiences Creating a Legacy of Values

Abstract:Background and objectives: A legacy of values (e.g., legacy letter) is a nonlegal way to intentionally communicate intangible assets (e.g., values, life lessons, and emotional and supportive instruction) with others. There is scant research on legacy creation outside of a palliative care context, and no studies have explored the experiences of community-dwelling older adults creating a legacy of values. Research design and methods: As part of an exploratory sequential mixed methods study, we conducted semistructured interviews with older adults (N = 16) who had previously created a legacy of values. We analyzed transcribed interviews using an interpretive descriptive approach. We iteratively coded interviews deductively with sensitizing concepts identified in the literature (existential well-being, end-of-life preparation and completion, generativity, and resilience), and inductively, based on participants' descriptions. Codes were categorized by patterns of motivations, content, outcomes, and meaning, and thematically summarized. Results: We conceptualized the overall experience of creating a legacy of values as Preparing for the Future While Living in the Present and identified 4 themes: Preserving the Intangible for You and for Me, Sharing What I Want You to Know, Obtaining Peace through Reflection and Preparation, and Living into a Continuing Legacy. Participants attained peace, realized their life was not complete, and were challenged to live intentionally through legacy creation. Discussion and implications: Creating a legacy of values may concurrently prepare older adults for the end of life and the remainder of life. These findings offer insight into a generative act that can promote intentional living among older adults.

Abstract:Older adults are today healthier, they live longer, and many are economically more fortunate than previous generations. Studies of the biological and emotional benefits of creativity interwoven with the advantages of contemporary longevity demonstrate that older adults' engagement in artistic activities encourages health‐promoting behaviors. This chapter explores how art pedagogies and contexts of learning have been adapted to engage older adults in creative practices in the visual arts. It examines theories of learning in adult education as well as art education for older adults, describing the variations in praxis that developed from observations and research. Art education approaches for older adults benefit from the potentials of andragogical models and transformative learning theory. Beyond the pedagogies employed in formal education and community‐based art projects, the social support found in communities of practice such as the University of the Third Age and the self‐determined autonomy characteristic of heutagogical approaches are also examined.
Balancing losses and growth: a relational perspective on identity formation in the second half of life

Abstract:Psychoanalysis has so far only to a limited extent examined specifically grown-up and mature organizations of the self. The Freudian contributions mainly examine the impact of losses on the second half of life. The Eriksonian approaches put greater emphasis of possible gains and adaptation, while less attention is paid to inner, subjective life. In contrast, the Jungian and transpersonal views emphasize possible increase in inner freedom and a more relativistic, holistic, and possibly spiritual or "worldcentric" view on existence. Within a relational psychoanalytic perspective on identity formation in the second half of life, these possible changes may be described as a mature widening of potential space, using Winnicott's terms. Relationships also may be more based on "being" than "doing." A perspective incorporating potentials for increased experiential depth and creativity must include attention to actual losses and suffering, conflicts involved in letting go of certain ambitions, and lifelong themes that may be actualized.

Abstract:Death awareness can serve as an awakening experience and act as a powerful spark for significant life changes. The central question is, "How could death awareness and its creative examination transform our fear of death, open a path to liberation and self-empowerment, expand our consciousness, and lead us toward more meaningful, creative, and service-oriented lives?" The premise is that, instead of avoiding the reality of death, there is an opportunity to look into it and examine our fixed ideas and preconceptions about it—focusing on the person's fear of their death and not on their other fears related to the death and dying of significant others. Furthermore, the article examines death as a catalyst for significant life changes and fear of death, further exploring how death anxiety shows up in our lives, why reducing death denial is essential, how to honor death and all the lessons it teaches us, and how to transform our relationship with our mortality. It examines cross-cultural wisdom and alternative epistemologies that support the transformation of our death, such as spirituality, creativity, consciousness, transpersonal psychology, and Tibetan and Zen Buddhism. Future research would expand on the idea that the transformation of the relationship with death could foster personal growth and intensify connections to Earth and all living beings.
Alienation and alterity: Age in the existentialist discourse on others

Abstract:Aging Studies and Postcolonial Studies belong together in a rather fundamental way, given that they share profound theoretical roots and far-reaching critical perspectives. These derive not only from the more recent poststructuralist discourse on others but also, further back, from the existentialist discourse on others - particularly in issues relating to "The Look" as elaborated by Jean-Paul Sartre in his major philosophical treatise Being and Nothingness and in his reflections on racism, colonialism and humanism. These texts have had a decisive influence on both Aging Studies and Postcolonial Studies. First, no less a figure than one of the main progenitors of Postcolonial Studies, Frantz Fanon, drawing on Sartre, analyses the gaze of the colonial masters and black responses. Second, two of the most significant theoretical works on aging and age to have appeared since 1945 were directly inspired by Sartre: Jean Améry's On Aging and Simone de Beauvoir's The Coming of Age. Additional sources of interest are the phenomenology of responsibility by Emmanuel Lévinas and works on absurdity and rebellion by Albert Camus. It is this early influence that is explored from two perspectives adopted by more recent postcolonialist discourse: debates around the concept of alienation involve analysing and critiquing the kind of epistemic violence which renders abject and invisible not only old people but also all those who are 'othered' by a dominant gaze (racism, ageism, othering); and the concept of alterity involves debating ways of acknowledging otherness responsibly on the one hand and being able to articulate and represent oneself on the other: Can the subaltern speak? We might similarly ask "Can the old speak?" Postcolonial discourse tells us that this is not quite as easy as some versions of so-called "Happy Gerontology" proclaim. The aim of the present article is to examine the foundational existentialist critique of racism and ageism and to render it useful for re-negotiating possibilities for aging differently - without othering.
